The Korean Wave is ebbing, and the backlash is under way. Viewers in the Asian countries that could not get enough of Korean soaps at one stage are now complaining about their monotonous plots and off-the-rack characterization. Critics say the formula is becoming an obstacle to the further development of the Korean pop culture wave. Now, even a Japanese magazine for fans of the Korean Wave has laid out elements of the formula for its readers. "We can predict what will happen in any scene of Korean drama, like fortunetellers", it said. "Perhaps Korean drama has a mysterious power that enables us to make predictions". Here are its seven iron rules of Korean soaps.


1. Ordinary girl falls in love with business big shot

This is the standard storyline in Korean dramas. Hero owns conglomerate, heroine is a common office worker or an ordinary woman. How about this: Heroine is trying on clothes in a luxury boutique. Hero watches her, sitting on a chair with his hand on his chin. He smiles at her and slightly shakes his index finger, to indicate "no" for an item she's trying on

2. Angry guy

When a male character is angry, his face is always seen in a mirror or window. Without exception, he then proceeds to break the mirror or window.

3. Very young executive

In both Korea and Japan, most executives are over 50. But in Korean soaps, many business executives are young and hunky. Even staffers' girlfriends fall in love with them.

4. All doctors are surgeons

In Korean medical dramas, there are no doctors except surgeons. Internists and ear, nose and throat specialists may not like it, but it is so. If the lead is a doctor, he or she always becomes terminally ill but keeps quiet about it. And you thought early diagnosis and treatment were basic principles of medical service.

5. Fortuitous cabs

The heroes in Korean soaps have an uncanny ability to catch a cab in a timely manner. In any emergency, a cab just happens to pass. Or maybe it's the cab drivers who have the power of foresight?

6. Weather forecasts are always wrong

Heroine is soaked in unexpected shower due to wrong weather forecasts. Hero appears in front of her carrying -- an umbrella!

7. Mobile phones

No matter how poor they are, the protagonists have an expensive mobile phone. Most cost some W700,000 (US$1=W923).

The list could go on, but the point is made. One pleasure Korean soaps provide is predictability, invariably.

Medyo nga nakakasawa na yung mga plot...eto rin yung reason kung bakit medyo humihina na yung following ng Korean dramas. In fairness, ilang years na rin naman ang Korean Wave. At leats diba, graceful exit yung pag-die out ng phenomenon.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF K-DRAMAS:

1) Relationships -The Truth? A love triangle is a MUST. However, there are more sub-categories under love triangles.

--Two men- One woman= In this type of love triangles, all the guys are good-looking, professional, and wealthy. The girl is poor but EXTREMELY pretty and innocent. Under no circumstances can the drama lack the girl nor can the guy be sub-perfect.

--Two girls- One man= Once again, the man is a rich heir to a massive fortune and/or company. At the very least, he is the Vice President of his father's company; always dresses in crisp suits, knows business-smarts, and is of course- handsome. Likewise, the girl is just as beautiful but POOR and innocent. The Other Girl who is about the same level as the Guy is pretty but evil and/or psychotic. For the guy, the Girl is always sacrificing herself. In the long line of K-Drama history, the Evil GIrl has never gotten the Guy.

(+Nowadays, the 2 Guys-2 Girl Love Quadrangle is very popular, not to mention complex)

Conclusion- In the drama, the guy is always handsome, rich, AT LEAST the vice-president of a mega-conglomerate but ODDLY ENOUGH(?) he doesn't know how to be anything but KIND and LOVING toward his polar opposite: The Pretty-Innocent Girl. In one word? The Kight In Shining Armor.

On the other hand, the Girl is always poor, but spunky and inevitably GORGEOUS with a HIGH SENSE OF indepenence and PRIDE. Even though The Girl gets the Man (in the long history of k-dramas, this is EQUIVALENT TO THE BIG BANG THEORY), she always gets screwed by the Other-Pretty-But-Evil Girl in the middle.

2) Marriage -There CANNOT be a marriage WITHOUT the interference/fierce opposition of the family.

Whether it is class differences, family problems, the marriage cannot come without a big bang in between. NOTE: The parent's opposition never lasts forever. In the end (usually 1~2 episodes before the End), they are suddenly all loving and grandmotherly without the prior b!tchiness displayed through Episodes 1~6. A story that's been more stretched out than turkey meat.

The rich family is the one that protests the wedding, the parents threaten to cut off all ties with their child and/or remove them from the family register.

In the end, they say OK.

3) The Man's Profession -In popular dramas, there are no middle-level management employees, no salesman, no KFC manager, and Definitly no pizza delivery guy. Their fathers are always the CEO of a huge company, and the Male Character himself is AT THE VERY LEAST Managing Director / Market Director. He is UBER-talented in his field. I wonder how many % of the world's male population fit the aforementioned qualifications. In addition, MOST of these GUYS ARE ALSO Awesome FIGHTERS. Rich. Good-looking. Intelligent. Prestigious Family Background. Skilled. HAS COMPLETED COLLEGE AND/OR MBA ABROAD (99% IN AMERICA). Dresses like a Model. Kind. Warm. Pure-hearted. Perfect Gentleman. CLEAN. Plays at least ONE Musical Instrument. Good at SPORTS.

LASTLY, although the origins are unknown, they ARE HELLA GOOD FIGHTERS.

4) Girl's Profession/Job -In this situation, it's not absolute, but MOST OF THEM work at the Guy's company and/or closely affiliated fields. Of course, the Guy ignores his seniority over the Girl and helps her out like a guardian angel. And although most of the Girls have a high sense of independence AND do everything there is, they rarely get any recognition for their hard work. To put it more specifically, the Woman's CLIMBING/OVERCOME OF SOCIAL OBSTACLES are not very important- at least not enough to focus on.

5) The Republic of Korea FIts In Buddha's Palm?! -There are dozens of parks in Seoul (The 3rd most populated city in the WORLD). What is the likelihood of two people WITH DAY JOBS spotting each other like that? But against LOGIC and PROBABILITY, One of the Main Character always sees the other person WITH THE EVIL CHARACTER EVERYONE LOVES TO HATE. (In girl's case, they usually roll their huge-*** eyes with double-lids).

6) The extent of lovers' touching BEFORE & AFTER the conflict is resolved -While dating, it is ALWAYS a hug. After their conflict gets resolved, ALWAYS a KISS. There can be no IN-BETWEEN. In the earlier stages of their relationsihp, they are always hugging (no more, no less), but when the obstacle (whether its the EVIL 3rd Party and/or Evil-Crazy Parents), they start kissing EVEN THOUGH NO ONE TOLD THEM TO. Can't they kiss BEFORE and hug AFTER?

7) Cancer & Car Accidents - The main character ALWAYS dies of cancer. And they usually don't recover. When the character gets cancer diagnosis, they usally think "that's it, my life is over." Especially when its the Girl, it's 99% likely cancer. It can't be a freak accident- no sticking a finger into the toaster, no falling off the cliff, no struck by lightning- it's GOTTA BE CANCER. And in the final stages, they HAVE to go on a JOURNEY. They ignore little, unimportant details such as : CHEMOTHERAPY, MEDICATION, TRIAL THERAPIES, MODERN MEDICINAL CARE IN GENERAL. Without trying, they usually end up dead. Although the MAIN CHARACTERS usually die of Cancer, most of the RELATED characters die of car accidents. It's true that South Korea has many vehicular accidents, but almost all of the not-quite-the-main-characters die from car crashes.

8) THE RICH CHARACTER's HOUSE IS ALWAYS 2-STORY HIGH -The Wealthy person has to live in a 2-story house. They can either live at a HUMONGOUS apartment like Tower Pellis (The Formerly Most Expensive APT in Korea, now its Hyundai I-Park -_-) Although the character can live by themselves, their family always has two stories. IT CANNOT BE 3 STORIES HIGH, ONLY 2. And even though its a huge-*** house, they never have a A/C machine (The Korean type that's shaped like a refrigerator) in the middle of summer. From the viewer's perspective, the kitchen is always to our left and the master bedroom is always to the right. The stairways is at the middle and the front door is to the right, as well.

AND THE RICHER THEY ARE, THE LESS LIKELY ARE THEY TO HAVE TELEVISIONS.

Although home theatres are the rage nowadays, it seems that the rich people don't follow that trend. On the other hand, the Girl's family usually resides in the GHETTO with long, winding roads with doors that have chipped paint.

9) The Must-Have: Slapping - For as long as I have lived, I have never BEEN slapped nor have I slapped as I have seen in k-dramas. In fact, I've never seen other people do, either. When the main character's pissed: SLAP. Unsatisfied? Slap. Fighting? Slap. Seeking revenge? Slap. [insert random emotion]? Slap. As I watch k-dramas, I wonder if the roots of Korean culture lies within the Art of Slapping. Whatever the problem is, a good-ole slap can solve it. Currently, the REALISM of the slapping fascinates me. They hit hard.

10) The Chauffeur's NAME IS ALWAYS "KIM" - It's true that Kim is the most common Last Name in South Korea, but MOST, if not ALL drivers in the drama are named Kim. Can't there be a Driver Park? Driver Choi? Driver Cha? Driver Bang? Driver Lee? Driver Lim?! There are countless surnames, yet the driver must be "Driver Kim" or else. Do many Kims work in the transportation field?!

Mga sis... lam nyo ba, while I was watching The Filipino Channel (TFC), nagkaroon ng teaser ng Lovers in Paris... meaning ipapalabas nila ang isang Korean drama, sa TFC... hmmm.. this gave me an idea... na if ever, mag-click yun... syempre ang GMA Pinoy TV, maglalagay din ng koreanovela on air... and if ever... mukhang ang beloved Full House natin ang mailalagay... well baka Jewel in the Palace.. or Jumong.. pero malaki ang chance na full house SANA, ang gamitin nila... hahaha... ang wide ng imagination ko no.. hehehehehe... ala lang...

naku tlgang hirap pumasok sa tsinoy but thx at madami mga posts dito. thx for all the info, 4ever7. alam mo ewan ko if it's just me but i still am a koreanovela addict up this time. kc di na naman pare pareho ang plots. mabuti nga at nabawasan na yang mga car accidents that can cause amnesia, or mga characters na me cancer. tlgang di gaya ng dati paulit ulit na lang. so far, i still keep on buying dvd9s and still watching them. altho i would admit that na hook ako sa Prison Break seasons 1 and 2. after ng sobrang daming koreanovelas, ibang delight ang nakuha ko dito. at the edge of your seat ang feeling na parang jumpy and emotional. napapasigaw nga ako esp. sa ssn1 at 2 days each lang namin nilagare kc pag naumpisahan mo na, ayaw mong tigilan till it's over and done with. but since 2 dvds lang yun, bumalik uli ako sa koreanovelas. kc di din lahat ng usa series ay masarap panoorin.

05.21.07 Rain Nominated in 44th Daejong Awards
 

Rain who won "The Best New Actor" award in PaekSang award, is again nominated in another Korean film award, i.e. the 44th Daejong Sang for "The Best New Actor". MC Mong, Liu Dehuan (pinyin), Pu Guangzhen (pinyin) and Daniel Henry are his competitors for this award.

The judge committees of Daejong Sang announced 29 nominated movies. From the announcement, Jeong Jihun (Rain) was nominated due to his movie <I'm Cyborg but that's okay>.

Rain who recently revealed his casting in Hollywood movie <Speed Racer>, had been nominated in the 1st Asian Film Festival for the award "The Best Actor". Everyone is curious if he can win the award in Daejong again.

The 44th Daejong Film Festival begins on June 1 at HanRiver Park and the award presentation is held on June 8 in Sejong Centre.

During the 31st of May (local time) movie release press conference of Hollywood movie 'Speed Racer' in Germany's Berlin Babelsberg Film Studio, Rain replied to reporter's performance-related question by saying, "I want to start step-by-step from the very basic and develop gradually."

According to a reporter at the press conference, when asked why he turned down other invitations to act in leading roles and the reason why he chose this movie, Rain replied "Because I want to start step-by-step from the very basic and develop gradually, that's why I chose 'Speed Racer'. Moreover, I have great confidence in the Wachowski Brothers, and I believe that by acting in this movie it will be of great help to my experience of movie performances."

Rain said, "Since my childhood days I've always liked Susan Sarandon, John Goodman and other such great actors, and to now be able to collaborate and work with them in this movie, I feel extremely honored."

Producer Joel Silver, directors the Wachowski Brothers, actors Susan Sarandon, Emile Hirsch, Matthew Fox, Christina Ricci etc attended the 'Speed Racer' movie release press conference with the attendance of more than 100 media representatives from around the world.

During the one-hour long press conference, reporters inquiries concentrated mostly on producer Joel Silver, Rain was asked 3 questions. On the same day the announcement of the movie's race car(s) was released and publicized; attaining much focus from the global media.

Rain's Hollywood debut movie ' Speed Racer's producer Joel Silver discussed reasons why he invited Rain to act.

During the movie release press conference in Germany's Berlin Babelsberg Film Studio on the 31st, when asked by the media why Rain was asked to act, 'Speed Racer' producer Joel Silver said "I was very satisfied after looking up on all of Rain's material, and so I extended the invitation to him."

According to a reporter at press conference, regarding the question of "How did you know of Rain and why you thought of asking him to act?", Joel Silver said, "I heard that Rain is extremely famous in Asia, and so I decided to pay more attention to him. After watching his concert, [color=#598527! important][color=#598527! important]soap [color=#598527! important]operas[/color][/color][/color] and all other DVD materials of his I was very satisfied, and then I extended the invitation to Rain, to which he happily accepted."

In the beginning of this year, Joel Silver arrived in South Korea to obtain all of Rain's concert DVDs, and soap operas and movie material which Rain has been involved in. Shortly after the invitation to act in 'Speed Racer' was extended to Rain, and after going through several exchanges in opinoins everything was finally detemined.

In February during the Berlin Film Festival Rain met with 'Speed Racer' directors the Wachowski Brothers for the first time, and experienced before hand the simulated vehicle race scene.

Producer Joel Silver, directors the Wachowski Brothers, actors Susan Sarandon, Emile Hirsch, Matthew Fox, Christina Ricci etc attended the 'Speed Racer' movie release press conference with the attendance of more than 100 media representatives from around the world.

During the one-hour long press conference, reporters inquiries concentrated mostly on producer Joel Silver, Rain was asked 3 questions. On the same day the announcement of the movie's race car(s) was released and publicized; attaining much focus from the global media.

'Hwangjini' Song Hye-kyo, decorates cover of Vogue Korea



Song Hye-kyo will be on the cover of the June edition of 'Vogue Korea', being the first Korean actress to be featured on the magazine's cover.

Wearing a Hanbok (Korean traditional outfit) designed by the 'Hwangjiny' costume designer Jung Gu-Ho, Song Hye-kyo completed a photo shoot in Paris, France with Paulo Roversi, a fashion photographer from Italy.

According to Vogue Korea, the staff who took part in this photo shoot is all internationally top class. One of the three major fashion photographers Paulo Roversi was joined by hair stylist Julian Dy's and make-up artist Stephan Marais.

Lee Myung Hee, chief editor of Vogue Korea, commented, "We have used Korean models active abroad on the cover, but this is the first for a Korea actress. Wearing a Hanbok for the photo shoot has great meaning".

Song Hye-kyo's photos will be published across 18 pages in 'Vogue Korea' which will be released on the 20th. Behind the scene footage will be broadcasted through Olive Channel.
