i don't think GMA 7 has this series, MARS! why??? because until now, it hasn't been shown YET. the rumors that channel 7 has acquired this show started since last year but this is all BLUFF!!! - billydkid

unfortunately, gma 7 did get the rights to air Mars. in fact, the tagalog dubbing of the whole series was done months ago and teasers have been shown by gma a couple of times. can't blame you for thinking that it's all hoax though considering that they haven't aired it until now.

just got news yesterday from the QTV Housewarming Party. MARS will be aired in QTV, a local channel (sister company of GMA), para syang studio23 ng ABS naman. they will launch QTV this November 2005 pa and they've got new shows lined up and one of them is MARS. it's not a hoax, though can't blame some people on thinking that this is one talaga.

no wonder GMA is saving this for their new channel kaya siguro ang tagal bago mapalabas. our company was one of those invited by QTV channel as one of the advertisers that is why i knew about it.

i guess, all we have to do is still wait. but at least we know that it will be aired real soon. yun nga lang, as freakZZ said, konti lang viewers ng QTV since it is really new. but i am sure, magiging hit pa din yan, no matter what.

Akala ko ba sinigurado ni Mr. Joey Abacan na sa channel 7 ito ipalalabas bakit nagbago ihip ng hangin? Pero kung ibuburo lang nila mabuti na nga na sa channel 11 na nila ipalabas. Kailangan lang ng sobrang publicity. Pero sayang yung sa mga provinces. Mas malakas talaga kung sa channel 7.

yup. i suggest u do that since gma is taking forever to air it plus, i'm sure there'll be lots of cuts when they finally air it anyway.. and it's such a great series that you'd want to watch it over and over again so it's better to have your own copy.

OK lang bumili ng VCD at DVD nito. Maikli lang series at super ganda. Hindi ka magkakasiya sa isang panood lang. It's worth it.

as what zashikibuta said, you're better off watching it on vcds mellizze. The subs are very good so there will be no problems for you to fully comprehend the story.

naku don't count on gma showing it soon. you'll just be disappointed. :rolleyes:

i can never express my disappointment and frustration with the way gma handled Mars...it's just way too much. now they're planning to show it on some uhf channel? tsk tsk. they're wasting a perfectly good series.

at least the only thing i'm thankful off is at least I got to enjoy Mars. If I waited for GMA to air it, namuti na mata ko, then I'd just be disappointed with all the cuts they'll do.

oh well. only in the philippines.

well, i think this will be put to primetime. channel 11 sya, katabi ng GMA. i just don't know if meron sya sa destiny ha? sa November pa kasi ang launch ng QTV.

QTV is the former ZOE TV 11. If you already have this channel before sa Destiny, malamang it will still be there come the time when it will finally take off.

It is free to air like GMA 7, so those who don't have cable can also watch it as well. It you felt that its signal strength will just be the same as the old Zoe TV 11, don't fret. Right now, the station is off the air to upgrade its facilities. So very likely, we will find its signals as strong as GMA 7's, bagamat just half of the latter's strength, dahil 100KW ngayon ang GMA 7. For QTV 11, the most power it could generate would be just 50KW. Then again, a 50 KW station is already considered strong enough to be picked up by even the most generic of television sets.

Basically, it is a right move for a show with a theme like "Zhan Shen" to be on QTV, since its storyline is not shallow or "mababaw". I haven't watched the first run of this series though, but judging by the trailers being aired at the time, it was really a thought provoking story.

BTW, the show's theme song "Ling (Zero)", is enjoying a revival right now, as part of Alan Kua Yo-lun's debut album. He wrote the song especially for this drama.

im so glad, coz i really love the song, i saw this one news clip of You Lun singing this song in one of his promotions and they also showed a a clip of Jay chou and zaizai greeting you lun! cool

Mars is a complete package. It's an intelligent series alright but it has also it's light moments.

Pero tama ka kasi ibang-iba ang MARS sa mga Asianovelas na ipinalalabas ng GMA 7 ngayon. Walang pipintas dito na nakakabobo although yung mga pintasero puwedeng sabihing nakakaloko :p

Some useful tips when voting

(I don't know if this'll work for everyone, but these worked for me)
1. Taiwan phone numbers start with 9 and then eight more digits (any). eg. 921624851 or 984621746

2. In the address box, I've had several successful tries typing (http://www.tsinoy.com/forum/showthread.php?p=245666#) in "Taipei Taiwan". Answering with only "Taipei" doesn't seem to work.

3. For the verification code, please make sure that you do not confuse the number "0" with the letter "O".

4. When generating ID card numbers, you can try generating ID numbers from other cities other than Taipei. (there's a drop down menu (http://www.tsinoy.com/forum/showthread.php?p=245666#) if you click the small arrow)

yup i believe that MARS is an intelligent drama. galing ng plot, ang daming twist, great love story of ling and qi luo. friendship was also tackled in the story. minsan mabagal yung story pero hindi ka maiinip.BEAUTIFUL STORY.

sa lahat ng barbie and vic fans..... nakaktuwa kasi sa wakas they fell in love with each other for real.....:)

On the Golden Bell Awards nominee list, to everyone's surprise Alan Luo (Xiao Zhu) was nominated as the Best Male Lead for his role in "The Outsiders II," but Vic Chou (Zai Zai) and Lan Zheng Leng, who everyone had high expectations for, didn't make the list. Yesterday a judge revealed that Xiao Zhu's undercover cop role was very rich and his character was deep. Lan Zheng Leng's overall performance fell short, his role was at a disadvantage. As for ZZ, "Was never discussed," and his "speech didn't express enough!"

Idol war
The drama categories for the Golden Bell Awards have been put on hold but list that had been announced has caused people in the circle to pay close attention. The majority of idol dramas, which usually receives high ratings, were not considered, except in the "Drama Program" category, "Say Yes Enterprise," directed by Niu Cheng Ze and in the "Male Lead" category Xiao Zhu represents young idols.

Lan lacked layers
Xiao Zhu plays an undercover cop in "The Outsiders II." His character was quiet but he many emotions inside. Although it's his first time playing a leading role, but the judges believe that a "performance that is able grasp two personalities is more mature." The originally favored Lan Zheng Long was counting on his role in "Say Yes Enterprise" and "Blazing Courage" but both were taken away by Xiao Zhu.

The judges think that Lan Zheng Leng's role in "Say Yes Enterprise" was better than "Blazing Courage." In "Say Yes Enterprise" he and his ex-girlfriend Barbie Hsu (Da S) portrayed a couple. Later Da S dies from a car accident and he's devastated and also vented out by shaving his head. Many spectators were touched by this scene.

But judges say, "Lan Zheng Long was indeed discussed but perhaps the way his role was presented was a bit different from Xiao Zhu. He didn't have enough layers."

Chou's didn't have enough fire
ZZ has received many praises for "Mars," saying that his acting skills improved greatly. The producer of the drama Angie Cai also praised that he "interpreted really well." However, the judges didn't recognize his role in the drama, where he plays two characters who have mental disorders, and perished it with "wasn't brought out to be discussed at all."

Judges say that ZZ didn't have enough fire. He has always struggled with Mandarin pronunciations and was said that hi "speech didn't express enough."

For the drama nomination list for the Golden Bell Awards the committee of judges had all reached a consensus and insisted to have at least one idol drama to encourage the development of idol dramas in Taiwan and walk away from Taiwan's representation. The candidates in the end were Lee Wei, Li Kang Yi, Niu Cheng Ze, and others that acted in "Say Yes Enterprise" and Vic Chou (Zai Zai) and Barbie Hsu (Da S) who acted in "Mars." "Mars" became the biggest lost pearl, losing by one vote.

Judges reveal
"Mars" was adapted from a Japanese manga and was directed by Golden Bell Award winning director Cai Yue Xun. Producer Angie Cai also spent lots of money to send the drama crew over to Japan to film racing scenes. Although after its broadcast the ratings weren't high, it was praised by the world. There's still anti-Japanese sentiments there. Too bad that MARS was adapted from a Japanese manga. They did not even considered the merit of the drama itself.

What's the use of the online voting? It's difficult to vote in that one but MARS is well ahead of the other dramas.

You don't need cable subscription naman daw. It's on free TV. Come November, channel 11 will have a formal launching daw at pareho na ng transmitter ng channel 7 ang gagamitin so lalakas na signal. Mas problema yung sa mga provinces.

During year 94 Jin Zhong award's website for the most popular drama, as Mars, acted by Da S and Zaizai have been leading the votes. However, when the nominations were announced, they didn't get nominated before. Director Cai Yue Xuan and his wife were shouting wasted for him, unbelievable that Zaizai wasn't nominated.

Mars was edited from a Japanese manga and directed by Cai Yue Xuan. Producer, Cai Zhi Ping even invested millions to flim at Japan's Xian Tai's outdoor scenes. Mars was actually being thought as the most popular thing including the lead actor and actress , Zaizai and Da S. Drama variety shows, Director and the outside world all saw that Zaizai and Da S would walk down the red carpet together.

However, when the nomination list was announced, Mars was empty, they was not even nominated for one award. The thing that Director Cai and his wife couldn't stand was that Zaizai wasn't even nominated.

In Mars, Zaizai plays 2 roles, one who loves drawing and the other who loves racing. This, to Zaizai, who is already closed to himself and lagging is a big challenge to him. In the show, Zaizai is labelled as a walking shen zhi qi. In order to hide the soft side of him, it became hard for him to show his "wanderer" side. However, he still managed to hit the Director's request and he managed to stop the joke that everyone have been talking about these years for his wrong pronounciation of words.

Cai Yue Xuan finds that Zaizai has rather high level of acting skills in Mars, the high life spirits that he shows in the show leaves an impression. They find that everyone can don't be nominated but not Zaizai.

I think a big bulk of the votes still came from Taiwan. Don't be misled by the frequent posting of the polls. Again, Golden Bell judges are not being fair! A judge from a TV station divulged a few days ago that 'Mars', adapted from a Japan manga, failed to make the nomination list by losing one vote to 'Say Yes Enterprise' because the latter is based on locally created original script. But Azio TV's 'Leng Zhi Shi Hong Pa,' a show boasted of buying Japanese copyrighted stuff, is nominated for best variety show! 'Leng Zhi Shi' host Hei Ren admitted that it indeed looked controversial.

This year, Hei Ren has the momentum with him. He is nominated for best supporting actor for his role in Public TV's 'Zai Jian Zhong Zhen Er Cun'. 'Leng Zhi Shi' which he hosted also makes the list of best variety shows. Although the show has been terminated, he said excitingly last night that he planned to use the Golden Bell to reverse the fortune and resurrect the show.

When asked about that 'Mars' fails to be nominated because it's not based on a locally created script whereas 'Leng Zhi Shi' is nominated even though it is not an originally created show, he laughed awkwardly, "It looks controversy if using the same criterion. But the show has already been nominated, it's not appropriate for me to say anything." Rumor has it that he is not paid for hosting the show. But he strongly denied it.

'Mars' producer Angie Chai is disheartened by the unfairness. She said, "Anyway I immediately knew that the judges didn't like it because of its genre when I saw it was not nominated. But initially the public TV also wanted to air the series. That means the contents of the series are refined and exquisite. Fortunately I didn't produce the series with the intention to win awards."

Da Zai Lian is hot right now and online fans sees good in it, hoping that after Mars, both of them would have the drama fate again. They even expressed, "I really don't want them to break up, not just like Lan Zhenglong, once they breakup , they won't work together." Yesterday was the end of voting for this year's Jin Zhong award "Year's best drama". Online votes were that Mars was first.

Yesterday, many fans of Mars and Zaizai Jia Zu all posted and said hoping that everyone would support Da Zai Pei and to quickly cast their votes. Compared to Da Lan Lian which wasn't seen good, Da Zai Lian was getting lots of support. Online fan, Mayo said, "If they continue to go steady, there'll be chances that they will work together, hopefully it is like that!" Although there was someone who finds that Da S isn't the kind who won't work with the person if she breaks up with him, "clever kid" replied, "You think she would work with Lan Zhenlong again ?"

Mars is not re-broadcasted in Ba Da. Although Mars has no fate with Jin Zhong awards, ratings went up one level when it was re-broadcasted. It went up to 0.5 from 0.2 . Mars and Dou Yu 2 were from Ba Da, Huo Xian Ren Wu were all under the favourites list. These 3 were fighting up and down. Ba Da expressed that they would not specially start up their people to vote, they hope it would really bring out the audience's voices.

Up till yesterday, not in line, Mars, Dou Yu 2. Huo Xian Ren Wu, Ge Dou Tian Wang & Ai Qing He Yue were among the year's most popular drama.

The results from the online voting will be tallied with the “Da Cheng Bao” postcards sent in by readers, and the number of total votes and the top 5 vote getters will then be announced on the 20th. So if the actor's performance is exceptionally good, the judges will not nominate that actor if the series does not reflect Taiwanese values & national identity so that's why Zaizai was not even nominated. That's too bad. They could have created another category for that.

Every year, the Golden Bell Awards has always had regrets of a “lost pearl”. This year is no exception. Especially “Mars”, which possesses a very moving plotline as well as depth and substance. But to conform to the judges’ tastes and obtain their favour really needs a little luck.

Watching “Mars” for the nth time, (I) still feel that Da S and ZaiZai’s performance in the drama was very praiseworthy. Zaizai made a breakthrough from his performance in the past, and Da S’s acting is exquisite. Both of them becoming the “lost pearl” in the Golden Bell Awards, making people feel much regret.

Yet, to borrow director Hou’s words: “(It’s better if) Young people don’t get an award too early.” We also feel the same, so they would avoid getting the curse of the Golden Bell. I don't think so. It will be a great boost to ZZ's career had he been nominated in the Golden Bell. I have to admit that there are still non-believers out there who are saying that he only got looks & not the talent. An award will prove them wrong. Of course, Vic Zhou fans knew all along that he got both the looks & the enormous talent.

The more young artist will be encouraged to better their craft if they get nominated.

Don't know about the curse.

Sa QTV din mapapanood ang Asian novelas na All In, God Mars, Golden Bowl at Cabecita ni Thalia (remember her sa Marimar at Rosalinda?).

All In? I thought this was shown on GMA 7 na. Haven't seen any trailers or promos for all the asian novelas on QTV. Oh well....:(

The awarding ceremonies for the Golden Bell Awards and the Golden Horse Awards are sepearated by only a day. Besides the fierce competition between the casting of the show's respective hosts, the invited guests also intentionally chose to attend only one and not the other. The list of artists invited by organizers ETTV (for Golden Bell) and Azio (for Golden Horse) had a very clear demarcation line. The artists also "choosing a side". For example, Lan Zheng Long's TV drama "Huo Xian Ren Wu" is nominated this year for Best Selling Drama as well as the audiences' poll awards (in the Golden Bell Awards), but he chose to attend the Golden Horse Awards ceremony with his leading lady in his movie "The Lovers", Li Kang Yi.

All the nominees in the Golden Bell Awards' "People's Choice Most Popular Drama" (by poll) are popular idol dramas. But what a coincidence, Da S and her former and present boyfriends Lan Zheng Long and "ZaiZai" Zhou Yu Min will all not attend, using work as their reason, ingeniously avoiding the awkwardness that might come from the possibility of them on the red carpet at the same time.

The call for the Da S-ZaiZai starrer "Mars" to win the award is very high. The people are also anticipating the sight of the two, who are currently in the midst of a passionate romantic relationship, walking the red carpet together hand in hand. But Da S expressed through her manager Chen Yi Ling that Da S didn't receive an invite, she also has work that night and cannot attend. ZaiZai, meanwhile, is filming "Shen Qing Mi Ma". His manager said, ZaiZai still has to rush the filming, he wouldn't have the chance to attend the Golden Bell Awards.

Lan Zheng Long, presently in Shanghai filming "Yong Yuan De Ming Ji", is going to fly back to Taiwan specially to attend the Golden Horse Awards for his movie "The Lovers", but he also starred in "Huo Xian Ren Wu" which was also nominated for the "Most Popular Drama" in the Golden Bell Awards. His manager Billy said, his schedule is too tight, he won't be attending the Golden Bell Awards. Zhang Xiao Chuan, the other lead actor in "Huo Xian Ren Wu" is currently serving his military service, leaving only Ah-Pang and An Yi Xuan to hold the fort.

The other nominees in the "Most Popular Drama" are "Ge Dou Tian Wang", "The Outsiders 2", and "The Love Contract". But the three dramas put together only has three stars attending - Luo Zhi Xiang, Guo Pin Chao and He Jun Xiang. Although "Ge Dou Tian Wang" got high ratings, Sweety and 5566's Sun Xie Zhi and Wang Ren Fu have no plans of attending the Golden Bell Awards. Sweety will go to China for an activity.

The racing scenes in the TV drama series Mars were shot with an intensity which makes you tense up and feel like you were present on the scene. The climax of the first half occurring in the 6th and 7th episodes, the all Japan road race for qualification, and the World Grand Prix scenes in the last episode were shot last year from March 3 to March 10 at the Sugo Sportsland in Sendai.

On the appointed day, unexpectedly the place was hit by a big snowstorm; Vic was also astonished by it. There were 300 fans from around the country to participate in the shooting, acting as extras, but the shooting was most likely to be delayed because of the snowstorm. To show his appreciation to the waiting fans, he went near them and said in Japanese, "It is very cold, isn't it?" When he moved, he deliberately walked through the fans. By nature, he is a person considering of others. Instantly, the staff had a good impression of him.

According to the staffs of Yamaha and Tetsu Tec who did the support work for the racing scenes, Vic was tremendously popular but he didn't act like a star. At the beginning, because of the language barriers, he gave people the impression of being quiet. He looked very cute when he laughed. He was not only like a mischievous kid, but was also very playful.

For instance, he rode heavy bikes used for racing in actual shooting, but he favored a scooter, Yamaha Vino, which was used specifically for moving around the huge circuits. When he was not filmed, he would rode the scooter cruising around There were two such scooters, he liked to ride the bright green Vino, which in no time was reserved for Vic's personal use.

During shooting the beginning of the race, when he was not filmed, he appeared calmly riding the Vino following those riders on racing bikes. Even though he wasn't being filmed by the cameras, he was definitely one of the riders.

As for involvement with motorcycles, Vic had already obtained his heavy-weight bike license before the shooting started. From the experts' eyes, his riding postures were standard. He knew how to bend his knees appropriately and roll his g wrists, etc. He also caught up really fast and was praised, "He has got very good motor skills!"

While shooting for the TV series, they also taped for a variety show on some of the days. The person representing Japan and taping the show together with him was the Japanese bike racer, Norick Abe.

"Vic looked to have already practiced in Taiwan, he could ride a bike. To ride a bike, the first thing is to have a feel for balancing. After that, you must conquer the fear from exposing your body directly against the wind. He easily passed those areas and didn't need any special instructions."

He's got certified by a pro.

Looking at him making merry in an innocent way, he was different than Lei in Meteor Garden and Ling and Sheng in Mars. You felt he was just like a modern-day candid 22-year-old (at the time of filming) boy whom you can normally spot anywhere.

Megan: I borrowed the comic series from the office when it was decided that I would act the role of Qingmei. I felt it was a little bit serious. While I read on, I felt the story itself had good intentions and was also humorous. By acting in Mars, I hoped to have positive impacts on various people.

Q3. Mr. Liu Liang Zuo who acted the role of Mr. Li Chuan is a veteran actor, isn't he?

Megan: Yes. Before the filming was started, the four of us - Zaizai, DaS, Xiaoxiu, and I - received one month of acting instructions under his supervision.

Xiaoxiu: In order to have the four of us knowing each other better and getting along, we started taking lessons under Mr. Liu's supervision. First, we started on improving the relationship among the four of us. Director Cai had instructed that the filming wouldn't start until we got to know one another more closely. We did some games. They were acting games, such as how to act like rich people (Laugh). After that, we worked on how to act out our roles.

Megan: As a matter of fact, there wasn't much time left before the filming started. In order to get into our roles quickly, Mr. Liu had us write autobiographies for our respective roles. I wrote Qingmei's; Zaizai wrote Ling's and Sheng's. We then presented our autobiographies in front of others. We would discuss and say, "Here, isn't it like this?

And for those judges who are all a bunch of morons – they may fool themselves but never, as in NEVER, the viewing public especially Zai Zai’s fans. A huge thanks to these people who had cast in their votes, whom I believe, some of them may not be even Zai’s devoted fans. But since they know in their hearts “the fact” that Mars is a great series & it should be awarded the recognition it deserves, had given their support too w/out any qualms. Even if, let say for instance, am not a Zai’s fan but have encountered this series, these voter’s rationale, I should say, is indeed an excellent judgment.

Cheers! You could never really put a great series down! One way or another it will find its very own place…yes, right in the mid of the hearts and minds of good people who had put Mars on top of their choices!!!

DaS said to me, "It's okay! This is just a drama, don't need to be concerned. Do it with all your strength!" Even she had said so, I still felt miserable.

Xiaoxiu: Nevertheless, your image looked strong!

Megan: Thank you very much. It was a drama, I had to portray like that.

Megan: Since before the scene was shot, I had got myself into Qingmei's mood. Even now I still feel like crying. First, it was a close up of Zaizai's face, I almost cried at the time. Inside scoop1 1: Zaizai in e-mail

After the drama was finished, Mars cast still keeps in touch with one another using MSN messenger. (It looks that people in Taiwan often chat on MSN.) They talk about their jobs, or touch base, or just enjoy silly little talks. By the way, Zaizai's cold jokes are still stored intact on MSN messenger.

Inside scoop 3: "Very exciting about the heavy snow" at the Sendai location

Because it hardly ever snow in Taiwan, it was the first time that Xiaoxiu saw snow, so he was really excited about it! Although Zaizai had seen snow in New York, it was still a rare experience for him. The first two days after they arrived in Sendai, they built a small snowman and played snow fight. They were having a great time. But on the 3rd day the snow continued falling. They looked at each other's face and whispered, "hope it wasn't snowing like this...” Wasn't it nice to get to experience both the fun side and the harshness of snow?

Inside scoop 4: The penalty for the game at the party was to act a geisha!?

The cast gathered together and held a party at the Sendai hotel. In the party, they played a game called ‘Chou Gui Pai’ (The game is similar to the Japanese card game ‘Babanuki’, ‘Gui Pai’ means the joker card.) The penalty for the loser is to mimic a geisha. At the end, poor Zaizai was the one with the joker. He begged mercy, "I can't do it. Please spare me." Instead of imitating a geisha, he was allowed to drink 3 cups of beer. After that, Zaizai, who was already pretty drunk, got so dead drunk that people had to drag him and throw him into his bed.

Inside scoop 5: "Toilet competition", they were serious about it.

On the set, Zaizai said to Xiaoxiu, "I'm going to the rest room, how about Xiaoxiu?" "Yeah, me too." answered Xiaoxiu. "Good. We will compete up to the rest room! The loser will wait outside!" Zaizai quickly made an arbitrary rule as he started to run. For some reason, Xiaoxiu always earnestly participated in such kind of contests! When they were together, they always behaved like two elementary students who were close to each other. It seemed that other staffers constantly commented coldly (?), "really, very energetic..."

Inside scoop 6: On the beach, some had fun, some took a rest

The location for the double-dates beach scene in episode 14 is the Kending beach located in the southern part of Taiwan. To shoot the scene, they drove from Taipei early in the morning; the cast had only about 3 hours of sleep. Even so, Megan felt instantly revitalized when she saw the beautiful ocean and beach. She played around and had a great time on the beach. On the other hand, Zaizai and Xiaoxiu rested whenever they could. They slept deeply in air condition, like two tunas unloaded.

Director Cai Yuexun rocketed to fame because of his work in 'Meteor Garden.' Xiaoxiu is the only actor with a contract with him. When Xiaoxiu was 19 year old, he was discovered by director Cai's sister on a commuter train. At first, he thought she was lying. Later, after Xiaoxiu talked to director Cai in person, he made his decision! Officially he started toward becoming an actor. Inside scoop 8: Zaizai woke up the set!

Zaizai always came to the set in sports wear. Then, the first thing he did was to crack jokes to wake up people. One day Megan asked him, "We have stayed up late last night for shooting, how come you could start telling jokes from the morning?" "You guys wouldn't have woken up if I hadn't done it. Then, how are we supposed to continue the shooting?" answered Zaizai. He told jokes just for the sake of filming! But, it seems that they weren't very interesting jokes (Laugh).

grabeh i can't wait any longer to watch it on tv so i've bought a vcd. well i can say it was really worth watching, i was so kilig and nakakaiyak, itong series lang to na naiyak ako, i was surprised to zai zai's acting grabe ang galing niya sympre c da s din ang galing ng pagkakagawa galing ng director. Sana maiplabas na ito sa phils para mapanood na ngmga Filipinos and sana maganda ung dubbing.

Vic and Barbie revived the “Meteor Couple” in this drama; the storyline is a beautiful yet sad love story, very different from Meteor Garden. The hero and heroine, both traumatized at hearts, pursue their pure love at all costs. Turning the Complex Original Story into Reality via Vic’s Growth as an Actor

The main character Rei Kashino (a.k.a. Chen Ling) is a genius in motor biking races on the surface, and the deeply traumatized older brother of two beautiful twins. The storyline is about how two persons eventually found true love from one another – along the way, they were met with dramatic and saddening events which led to revealment of deep psychological issues and tremendous love/hatred relationships. Although there had been strong desire to turn the original popular comics, “Mars” (by Fuyumi Souryu) into a drama, it was not done so because of the difficulties in making the comic book story realistic enough for viewers. One of the obstacles is – who will be fitting enough to play the role of Rei? It would be difficult enough to find someone who fits the character (who needs to be a super-handsome genius), much less twins. Ordinary actors will not be accepted by the audience.

Knowing that these issues are difficult to overcome, we were very surprised when we watched Vic Chou’s “Mars” – we were stunned by his visual beauty, and more so by how he realized the role of Rei so vividly and convincingly.

Rei, who was thought to exist only in shoujou (Girls) comics, is breathing and is tortured by loneliness; he would want to be spoiled by the girl he loves or want to look tough in front of her; and, he would be troubled by love, all so vividly right before our eyes.

Come to think about it, Vic’s debut drama, mega-hit “Meteor Garden”, is also originated from shoujou comics. MG’s producer Angie Chai had told reporters that her impression of Vic when she first laid eyes on him was “just like Rui Hanazawa jumping right out of comic books”. But many people thought that was because Vic himself has the sophisticated looks and a lovable personality, which were perfect match to Rui.

That said, how did Vic match with Rei, who blamed himself for his twin brother’s death and lives on the edge as a result of this traumatic experience? There was little in common between Vic’s personality and Rei, and it was even more difficult as Vic has to double as Sei, the twin brother who appeared to be reserved but at the same time burned internally with violent flames? It must have been extremely challening to play these roles, yet Vic completely (120% in fact) synchronized with both characters. Angie had once commented on his acting as follows:

“Vic didn’t have much of an interest in acting when I asked him to go to the audition for Meteor Garden. But, as he began his acting career, he has made tremendous progress over a very short period of time, surprising even his acting instructors. I am very impressed with his handling of the difficult roles for the twin brothers in Mars, considering the fact that he has only been an actor for three years.”

What was the reason behind Angie’s admiration? We believe it is Vic’s gifted talents as well as his extraordinary dedication to acting. He wrapped up promotional work for his second album “Remember…I Love You” (overlapped with the schedule of Mars shooting) and went hiatus for large-scale motorbike lessons and exams.

Then came the request of the director, who asked Vic to “deeply express various emotions as they surface on top of each other, just like the character depicted in the original story.” Moreover, the director wanted Vic to “delicately show how the character evolves from suffering in deep pain to opening his heart to his true love.” In order to meet the director’s standards, Vic took more acting lessons to help him analyze the role and he became very focus in “creating the roles”. Eventually, Vic was able to completely absorb the unique personalities of Rei and Sei in his own.

When asked to describe Rei, Vic replied “Rei has a violent side and is quite different from my temperament since I am actually a pacifist. However, one thing in common between Rei and I is that we can both sacrifice ourselves for the ones we love. (grin)”

Aren’t his instincts good in measuring the differences between the character and himself? Maybe because of that, only Vic can play the role of Rei so vividly in a drama.

Pairing with Vic for the second time since Meteor Garden, Barbie Xu played the role Aso Kira – the heroine of Mars who was traumatized from being raped by her stepfather. The role “Kira” is so different from the cheerful Tsukushi (aka Shan Chai) in MG. Barbie showcased her great acting skills in playing Kira. On the oppressive character, Barbie commented:

“Kira is kind and shy but her core personality is brave; and I like that about her. After playing Kira, I feel that I have more encourage now and that I can overcome any obstacles. I wonder if the audience will have a place in their hearts for her as well after seeing how brave she was.”

Other actors included veterans like Dai Li Ren (Akitaka, a.k.a. Min Gao) and Cheng Guo Chu (Takayuki, Rei’s father). Young actors include Megan Lai, Shu Ge Kai, Steven Lin, and Shawn (or Sean) An. Among them, Shawn and Steven especially attracted some attention.

The role Kirishima Masao (a.k.a. Tung Dao) was played by Shawn An, who debuted as a member of “Comiz Boys” – considered F4’s juniors. When he was announced for casting Kirishima, some writers of the Taiwanese media criticized: “He doesn’t fit this character; there’s no way he can ripe off that cheerful, bright image he has.” After much consultation with the director on the character’s psychological profile, Shawn was able to play the twisted character splendidly and brought out the dark feel surrounding Kirishima.

A member of the Taiwan hip-hop group “Matchi”, Steven played Rei’s senpai (senior in college) Hamazaki. Steven portrayed a slightly different Hama-chan from the original character. In a drama weighed with many serious/deeply emotional scenes, audience may find his character refreshing and enjoyable to watch.

Feeling the Details from the Racing Scene and Ending

Thanks to the director’s attention to details, settings and even costumes are as close to the original story as they can be. For example, in episode 1 the angles and shots of the scene when Rei asked Kira for directions was exactly the same as from the comics. The scene when Rei and Kira were building a sand castle – again a perfect match! Speaking of perfection, audience can feel the amazing pressure from the racing scene. Yamaha and DentsuTech provided maintenance support for the motorbikes, as well as technical supervision and filming support for the crew. The realistic racing scene is over-flown with vividness and is one of the most attractive scenes of the drama.

Introduction

The ending of Mars (http://www.tsinoy.com/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=310669#) is highly enjoyable both from visual and acoustic viewpoints. The ending theme is a duet by Vic and Barbie. “Let Me Love You” is a beautiful yet sad song. In the live ceremony for release of Mars Japanese version soundtrack, Vic and Barbie made the following comments:

Vic: “We were able to portray the characters when we were recording for the duet, because we are good friends (chuckle). Actually, it is because this song was specifically written for the drama. Besides, we were still shooting for the drama when we recorded the song so we were able to present the same feel. But, if we had a bit more time, we would have been able to sing better.”

Barbie: “In a duet, the key must be matched to one singer or the other. I asked the sensai (song producer) to match the song with Vic’s natural singing key because I am not confident in my singing skills. As a result, the song was very difficult for me because the key is too high. After the recording I called Vic and told him that when he listened to the song (when it’s done), he’d definitely think he was singing a duet with a ghost. The key was really high for me so I had to sing with this high-pitched voice from start till end and I thought I sounded like a ghost (grin). Because of that, although the song was supposed to be romantic, every time I listen to it I’ll crack up”

If we recall Barbie’s comments when we listen to the song we might laugh as well, but this song is soaked with the atmosphere of Mars and is a perfectly fitting song for the drama. And, asking the main characters to sing a duet for the ending theme is an indication of how serious the producers are in preserving the essence of the drama. Indeed, we were mesmerized till the very last minute of the series.

Whether you know of the original story or not, you will be drawn into the unique atmosphere right at episode one. Gradually, you would feel that you are moving along with the drama as it unveils and you will likely be more and more absorbed into the world of Mars. Vic fully demonstrated how he evolved from being an idol to an actor; his acting skills deserve much attention from the audience.

When the forgotten seal was opened, the truth they see is…? Rei and Kira – blessed with courage and friendship; show their sincerity in their quest for true love. This unpredictable, storming story will surely rock many viewers’ hearts.

im excited na ma-air na ito sa tv basta kahit anong channel mapalabas lang nila tong series, hope na maganda ang dubbing. i've watched it many times na d me nagsasawa, jayed wen was da last tym na nakita u pinalabas ung trailer, me mga two times last year pa yun ang tagal nilang ipalabas. hope na pumunta cla d2 sa phils. to promote. ipinalabs sa myx ung video na rang wo ai ni, bumoto nga ko pero hindi nkasama sa countdown. ang mahal ng mars ost dito 700 pesos, ang mahal. lagi me tumitingin sa qtv 11 at gma baka magannounce na papalabas na nila ito.

lapit na nga i-show yung MARS...

as what i know from GMA peepz...medyo kc down pa ang F4, i mean since 2004 medyo li-low sila, kya medyo alanganin daw if they were to push thru with the series last year, bka bumagasak daw ang rating and since medyo ngayon bumabalik na ang F4 lalo na yung lumabas yung issue bout sa engagement ni Vic and barbie kya they thought this would probably the best time to revive the F4 fever....(F4 fever??? sa abscbn pala yun noh)

same case din with the other F4 members, 1st off... Ken's City of Sky has not been aired pa, balak ata nila ito isabay sa isa pa nyang project...

lapit na rin yung Silence ni Vic, plus white tower ni Jerry...si vannes na lang ata la series ah..... but at least kaka-release lang ng movie nya entitled Dragon Squad.

I've been waiting for GMA 7 to air this series for more than a year and now they are going to air it on their new sister station without much fanfare. Hopefully many people will get to watch MARS inspite of everything ..including me :) .

I strongly believe that our local networks have been so out of touch with the developments of Taiwan's "Fab Four". They just wait and see that "Mars" will shatter all existing viewership records on QTV 11 to realize their tactical "blunder".

Anyways, let's not talk about ratings anymore here. Let's just enjoy the show once it starts!

So after a long wait they'll be showing it on QTV 11. This is still for me, one of the best Asian series. I hope a lot of people will get to watch this..it's a beautiful, beautiful story.

Hopefully, even with the lack of promotions, Pinoys will still watch. It must not be missed!

The key here is hopefully QTV would do its best to promote the series. this would attract viewers to watch the series and hopefully the series itself would increase the viewership of QTV.

aubrey, from what I heard and as posted AiKenzhu here, Mars will begin to air on February 6, replacing All In. The teasers in QTV 11 haven't announced the actual timeslot though. Based on the QTV 11 website, All In airs from 9-9:30 pm.

In connection with the premiere of MARS on Philippine TV this February 6, wouldn’t it be nice if it will be promoted in SOP or Gigsters with us, Zai Zai fans, as audience? Just like what ABS-CBN did during the MeteorGarden rewind promo.

So lets all unite and send email to GMA 7 and QTV 11 to do that promotion strategy to boost MARS ratings!

Anyways, this Monday na ipapalabas ang soap ni Vic Zhou na Mars (foreign title Mars God) kasama ang kanyang real life girlfriend na si Barbie Xu sa QTV at 7:30 ng gabi. Mas gusto sana ng fans ni Vic na sa GMA ito ipalabas, pero happy na rin sila at sa wakas, mapapanood na rin ang soap na pina-ngaralan ng Most Popular Soap of 2005 ng Taiwan TV Award Golden Bell. Ang tagal nga naman nilang hinintay na maipa-labas ang Mars sa Pilipinas.

prolly because the theme is not apt for young viewers. personally, i think it should be aired at a later time than 7:30 pm.

Hope many Filipinos will get to watch & appreciate this beautiful series.

Wonder why they are not promoting it as the 2005 Golden Bell's Most Popular Drama?or the Biggest Asian Drama like before?

Me..I still prefer to watch the original series because I always want to hear ZaiZai's voice :D ...with English subs of course :)

obviously, si Jerry ang favorite ng ABS....have you seen White Tower at ABS' teaser of its line-up of Asianovelas? if ABS prioritizes F4 as a whole, dapat di nila pinabayaang makuha ng GMA ang MARS....iba talaga pag Daomingsi, iba pag bida...:(

this is OT. anyway, if i remember correctly, gma used zaizai's song, "hotline for help" as the opening theme but the actual opening theme is "i wanna hold your hand" by dragon 5 (?)

Ang pinakaaabangang Asianovela na nagtatampok sa isa sa mga tinitilian at pinagpapantasyahang F4 heartthrobs ay mag-uumpisa na - ang Mars - sa QTV Channel 11.

Si Vic Zhou na gumanap na rin bilang pobreng prinsipe sa isa sa mga Asianovela ng GMA -7, ay nagbabalik bilang si Ling sa pinakahihintay na Mars, na mag-uumpisa ngayong Lunes, ika-7:30 ng gabi, sa QTV 11.

Makakasama ni Vic si Barbie Hsu bilang Quilo.

nagbabad ako sa QTV kahapon para mapanood ang lahat ng promo trailers ng MARS...hahahahaha...actually, ung mga kasama ko sa bahay, imbes na ako ang tumili, sila ata ang tumitili...hahahaha..nabuhayan ng sari-sarili nilang pagmamahal sa F4...:p

im really excited about its showing.... let the fever begin...;)

surprisingly, im kinda looking forward in watching this later... y know, check out the editing and the dubbing and $hit. :D but of course... my hopes and expectations are at an all-time low... lessens the impact of the disappointment ne ;) :D in other words... im watching it to bash it... if ever. LOOOOOL!!! jodan. :p

so yeah... watch it later in QTV [some of my rural-dwelling relatives dont even know that there's a Channel 11.. good luck. :rolleyes: ]. doesn't change the fact that it's still one of the best series out there.

hmmm... wonder when would the episodes w/ Tong Dao start? Nyihi! :D :p

Finally Mars premiered on QTV 11. The dubbing was okay. The voice used for Ling was good! The voice actor was able to show Ling's charm and naughtiness. The translation to tagalog was okay too. I like the taglish touch. very pinoy.

but here's the catch-----TOO MANY CUTS!!!

to those who havent watched this on its regular run on cts, and their subbed vcds here are the cut scenes:

1. the scene where Mingao and Ling were talking, the one about the wine and cheese--though a minor scene, it establishes the close friendship between the two characters.

2. the extended opening credits. right after Mingdao gave the keys to Ling, there was a scene when Ling opened the garage door slowly, he enters the garage and then feasts his eyes on Mingdao's bike. Then Ling is shown speeding down the highway while the song "Ling" is played in the background. This is followed by a wonderful montage of the future scenes of Mars and the opening credits.

3. The scene of Daye running down the steps of the school and announcing the basketball game at 3pm.

4. Ling walking towards the bulletine boards, he then meets a young college girl, he does a turnabout and checks her out with his eyes. Ling then makes this, "Not bad! Nice butt!" expression on his face. This shows his flirtatious and playboy side.

5. The next scene where Ling stands before the bulletine board with other students looking for his schedule and then Daye approaches him, tells him not to bother looking because they have the same classes as usual.
6. When they were classroom, Ling was looking around the classroom and checking out the ladies. He turned to Daye and said that the bodies of the women in the classroom are not bad. daye replied that he should have taken up medicine because he loves to examine bodies.

7. The part in the bathroom where Ling was watching Daye wash his face and then Daye warned him that Qi Luo is wary of guys like Ling. Daye calls Ling "A walking sex organ" to which Ling grins mischievously and said "ping ping!!"

8. The scene where Daye and Ling were walking down the corridor. Daye playfully tried to kick Ling's butt to which the other pushes his hips to avoid. Ling stops Daye to check out a pretty girl from a classroom.

9. In the English class scene, before Ling throws the paper at Qi Luo, Qi Luo is first asked to read a passage from a book by the teacher. Shyly, she stands up and read in a very soft, inaudible voice. Qing Mei then sarcastically tells the teacher in a loud voice that they cant hear Qi Luo and she kids with her seatmates that Qi Luo's "Ms. Ant" to which her seatmates snicker. The teacher asks the class to be quiet and he approaches Qi Luo and, this is a key scene, he grips Qi Luo's shoulder with his hand as he let her seat down. Qi Luo slightly flinches at this touch. This scene establishes that the teacher was indeed targetting Qi Luo as a potential victim of his harassment.

10. In the cafeteria, the part where Daye was ordering lunch was cut. As he does so, he watches Ling and Qi Luo.

11. After Ling borrowed money from Qi Luo, the part where she was sketching in class. That scene was longer.

12. The harassment scene was longer, the teacher was able to crawl his hand inside Qi Luo's blouse through her neckline and Qi Luo was just sitting there frozen and silently crying. Some flashback scenes of Qi Luo as a younger girl were cut.

13. The part when Ling was threatening the teacher with a cutter is longer. Ling was slowly walking towards the teacher, while rolling the blade of the cutter up and down. It was the only sound in the quiet room. The teacher's face was frozen with horror.

13 scenes were cut in just 1-30 minute episode!!

Though in the view of those who did the editing these scenes are not necessary, I believe because of the cuts, the over all effect and drama of the scenes was marred.

I was expecting this, this butchering of the scenes. They did it with Love Storm and now they're doing it again with Mars. This is despite Filipino fans of the series were pleading with GMA not to cut scenes. The hand inside the blouse thing is understandable. It may have been an MTRCB move. But Mars is a short series. More or less 13 hours only. So why the cuts? :mad:

Judging from the first epsiode this is NOT GOOD! not good at all.:(

pero pgkatapos kong mpanood ung pilot episode knina..

e prang nkkwalang gana panoorin...

no offense po pero gusto ko lng sbihin ung tingin ko...

kasi parang hindi ako msyado nadala sa mga scenes...

sobrang gusto ko tlga ng series na to kaya cnsabi ko lng ung mga napansin ko...

sana po walang magalit....

I understand your feeling, she_pao. Paano ka madadala sa scenes e ang daming putol. Yung pinalabas kanina mga first forty minutes yung ng episode one sa taiwan e ang dami na nilang pinutol. but even if this happened, give the series a chance, maganda ito.

hiramin mo na lang kaya vcds ko? di nga lang tagalized pero at least kumpleto. :p

got to watch this earlier though the last 15 minutes na nga lang. at first, i was kinda disappointed with the dubbing. (well, i didnt have high expectations to begin with) but after a while, mejo nasanay na ko sa boses ni Ling. hehe.. kinda reminds me of the voice they used for Tai Lang. and he's kinda conyo too huh? :D but still, the dubbing was not that great. good that they used the original songs and names (kahit mispronounced at times) though.

but nwei, i noticed there were cuts. didnt realize that there were so many if not for mcbeal's list here. *tnx mcbeal! :D * gusto ko pa naman yung "Ping Ping" scene and the cutter scene. i can understand cutting the "harrassment scene" and maybe the "cutter scene" (pero hello?! naimply na nga ni Ling na he can cut the teacher's face with it...sheesh..) but the others?! i just dont get it. they always do these kinds of cuts.

bec of these cuts, nabawasan yung 'essence' or something nung scene/story. oh well.

still, i encourage everyone to see this or grab a copy or whatever. one of the best series i've seen. great acting too! jia you zz! ;)

hello po! I feel a little down because after waiting for this for such a long time, I would learn na marami pala siyang cuts. Why do they have to do that? Gusto ko sana mapanood siya in it's entirety and for me to do that I would have to buy or borrow VCD's. Is someone willing to lend their copy para mapanood ko siya? Thanks.

I wasnt able to watch the premiere episode of MARS..but based on Mcbeal's observation, i'm kinda disappointed with the deletions they made..i really like this series..sayang naman..but i still hope they will give justice to the series..i hope to catch this everyday eventhough i have finished this long time ago and hear the dubbed voices of Ling and qi luo..

Hello Marzzians / Zaichos,

I am quite aware that much has already been said about the uniqueness & greatness of Mars not just by Zai’s fans.

But still, nothing has prepared me from the impact of Mars from some of the below non-zai’s fan during & after watching the series. Honestly, I am more enthused with their feedbacks and I really couldn’t help but smile whenever I ponder about the effects of Mars to them. Pls. read on, I am certain you’ll be amused.

Lady # 1 was so engrossed with the characters and story, can you believe it?! She forgot to call her boyfriend on the day of his birthday! Accndg to her and her group of friends, Mars goes beyond their expectations & it has more sense than other chinese series they’d seen. They will never forget Mars.

Lady #2 who usually calls her friends if she misses her flight so as to chat with them and burst out her anger, didn’t do so. When the check-in agent told her, she couldn’t be on that flight, didn’t make any fuss, just shrugged & she simply walked back home and was eager to watch Mars. Didn’t really bother to call any of her friends at all! She intentionally shut herself from the outside world for one day and concentrates on watching Mars. She even proudly said “I had Ling all by myself during that day!” She doesn’t want to be the only one crazy about it, so she plans to let her sisters watch it too.

Lady#3 said the story is beautiful & Vic is quite handsome. At that moment she had a change of heart, from DMS to Ling. There was a time when after watching the first couple of episodes, she couldn’t help but smile in their office while mixing her coffee. In her opinion, the difference between MG and Mars is this; MG will tickle your senses but with Mars you will fall in love.

Lady#4 couldn’t thank me enough for letting her watch Mars. When they’re over with the last cd, her friend couldn’t believe that the series ended (all of us actually)! Even insisted on calling me to ensure if there are no more additional cds in case I forgot to give them & if there is Mars 2? Lady #4 said it is the best so far, will definitely let her kins watch it too.

Lady# 5 who was supposed to have a date the day she watched Mars, couldn’t pull herself off the TV screen anymore. Their date was cancelled & was followed by an LQ. Nevertheless, they were able to settle their issue. But mind you, one of Lady#5’s major conditions was to let her watch Mars!

I have a friend of mine whom I had planned to stood up because of my laziness, but my friend knows me so well thus she later texted me saying she’ll edit me in her life if I didn’t show up and spend the night at her place. I brought the cds with me so we’ll have something to watch. When we started watching the first episode, she immediately exclaimed, “ang gwapo” when she saw Ling. She even accused me of punishing her a great deal when she got hooked on watching Mars. I told this story to my dentist who I encouraged too to watch the series, had remarked, “Wow this series must really be something”.

Never did these peeps regret watching Mars. It is so overwhelming when they appreciate the series so well, I felt I had done them a massive favor!

By the way, there were really some peeps who were not stirred after watching the first episodes ( and this was even w/out cuts and all), but later on, they could not even budge out of their seats anymore like in the case of Lady nos. 4 & 5. Mcbeal is right, please do not give up only because the pilot episode did not meet up with all your expectations, just hang in there, and you’ll soon discover the magic of Mars…

Lastly, couldn’t help but add this;

There’s one foreign director who, while filming his series stated that he would prefer having only hundreds of persons viewing his series for they need to see it, rather than having thousands of peeps watching the series because they just happen to like it. Yet, the response was great. His series became popular. Hopefully it is the same with Mars. How I would love for this station to affect the lives of these people (youngsters in particular) who are still disturb by their ghosts from the past, when they watch Mars. That by airing Mars, the station will let them realize thru each episodes that even after their tragic moments in life, they could still uphold themselves & have all the rights & courage to love and be loved. That these physically and emotionally scarred individuals could even have the most beautiful human being anyone could hope for or be a great person to a “normal” one…

Guys, esp. non-Zai & Barbie fans, do yourself a favor by watching Mars! Even if it is just to placate your curiosity based on what you read and heard, we can assure you that it is really worth the time and effort.

Again thank you so much for taking time to read a lengthy post of mine.
