GOD MARS: A dark tale of tragedy, love and redemption

"M-A-R-S. Mars." Ling said.

"Huo Xing (That's how Mars, the planet, is pronounced in Chinese.)" Ling said after he turned to face Qiluo, with his finger pointing backward to the plaster statue.

"Zhan Shen (How Mars, the Roman god of war" is pronounced in Chinese.)" Qiluo said.

"Was he the coward, who the Greek people say was bloodthirsty and belligerent, and yet was afraid of failure. Isn't he supposed to look mean and ferocious?"

"Indeed he is the god of war. But I heard that Romans described him differently." Qiluo said.

"Is that right?" Ling said.

"They said Mars wore shining armor, looked grand, and was non-stoppable.
He was a dark hero who led people to overcome tragedy." Qiluo said.

"A hero who overcame tragedy." Ling said as he came close the statue and examined it carefully.

Chen Ling is a motorcycle racer, a 21 year-old young man with god-like looks, a devil-may-care attitude and a violent streak. He is the campus playboy, preoccupied with scoring with every woman rather than studying. In fact, his best friend Daye describes him as a “walking sex organ”. He is the the classic delinquent. Yet, beneath this façade, lies a soul in pain.

Qi Luo is a reclusive, quiet artist, a woman who shuns human contact especially men. She sits quietly in her own world, painting her feelings on canvas. One look at her you notice an inner fear, a deep-seated pain etched in her soul. She is a woman with a past, a dark secret hidden under that calm exterior.

Two different people. Two troubled souls. By fate, their paths meet, in the simplest of circumstances, and discover true love that would heal and redeem them from the dark places they were hiding.

This is the general plot of Zhan Shen / God Mars, the latest drama (http://www.tsinoy.com/forum/editpost.php?do=editpost&p=198#) starring Vic Zhou as the devil-may-care playboy and Barbie Xu as the reclusive artist Qi Luo. Produced by Angie Cai of Comic Ritz and directed by award-winning director Cai Yue Xun , the same team up that made the hit teen drama, Meteor Garden 1, Mars dares to go beyond the parameters of the usual idol drama as it explores the darkness of the human soul, man’s penchant for violence and murder, obsession, and a love that conquers all. In Mars, both of the main characters wrestle with their own inner demons. For Chen Ling, witnessing the tragic suicide of his twin brother caused not only pain and anguish but psychological after-effects. As for Qi Luo, sexual abuse left her psyche severely scarred, making her fear human contact and veer away from intimacy. How these two people find true love and redemption is a fascinating journey that starts out on a dark plane but emerges as a heart-tugging, awe-inspiring story.


Based on the Manga (http://www.tsinoy.com/forum/editpost.php?do=editpost&p=198#) (Japanese comic book) by Fuyumi Soryo, Mars is set in a university in Taiwan where Chen Ling and Qi Luo are classmates. The first episode starts off with their chance meeting in a park with Chen Ling nonchalantly asking the quiet Qi Luo for directions to a nearby hospital. Without a word, she sketches the map to the hospital behind a mother-and-child sketch she drew. She hurriedly leaves Ling, making him flabbergasted at her strange behavior. At the hospital, during his visit with his friend Minggao, a motorcycle racer who met an unfortunate accident, he notices the mother and child drawing and is touched by it. In this scene, Minggao also gives him his treasured motorcycle which immediately reveals Ling’s passion for racing and speed. Ling arrives at the garage where the motorcycle was parked; he puts on the helmet, revs up and speeds down the streets with the powerful theme “Ling” sung by Alan Ke You Lun played as backdrop. The episode now opens with a montage of the series’ dramatic scenes that leaves the impression that this is a dark, passionate and heart-wrenching drama.

Mars revolves around the personal tragedies of both Ling and Qi Luo. Amidst a relationship that starts off as amusingly sweet, the audience will realize how their past tragedies affected their present lives and their relationship with one another. Audiences will encounter two screwed up individuals and will somehow wonder how they will ever succeed in life and love. More so, as each episode progresses, the secrets of each character are revealed that would intrigue and even shock audiences.

The story further delves into human intimacy. Ling is a passionate person, totally irresistible, who is used to having his own way with women with least effort. There is an air of sensuality about him in the way he talks, smiles and shamelessly flirts. Finding himself in love with an inhibited, almost frigid woman is totally new to him. And when he attempts to express that love in the most intimate way, he finds himself up against the wall Qi Luo built around herself. Scenes from the series show passionate moments between Ling and Qi Luo, from tender to utterly intense kisses, to scorching make-out scenes, that would turn abruptly cold, courtesy of Qi Luo. Viewers would find themselves totally enamored by Ling’s character as he struggles between his passion for Qi Luo and an overwhelming urge to protect her. Thus, it is fascinating to watch this aspect of their relationship which would culminate in one of the tender yet intense love scenes on television.


Mars is also a story of insanity and obsession, an aspect of the story provided by the intriguing character of Tongdao, played remarkably well by Anjun Cai. Tongdao develops an uncanny obsession for Ling. Ling’s encounters with Tongdao force him to examine his dark side and his predilection for violence. Eventually, this would lead to a dark battle of angst and wits and possible death.


But above all, Mars is a story of redemption. A tale of how two tortured souls find one another, become unlikely protectors and rescuers of each other. Ling’s love for Kira brings her out of her world of fear and distrust, and makes her discover the true meaning of love and intimacy. Kira’s love has redeemed Ling from the recesses of his own personal tragedy, from his own bleak view of life, making him accept his faults and later on forgive himself. Viewers will be touched at how Ling and Qi Luo draw from the strength of their love and conquer their own demons. But more so, as they journey towards their own personal redemption, the audience will laugh and cry with them, making them two of the most endearing characters, and Mars, one of the best Asian series of all time.

*Just a piece of trivia, the Mars thread in the old tsinoy.com forum reached a total of three volumes. The first volume was created at the time news broke out about Zai Zai's latest series. Zaizai's acting skills has improved by leaps and bounds

In the midst of Korean and Japanese dramas trend, Mars is a Taiwan-produced drama worth watching.

After you watch it, you have to admire the director's directing skills. He was able to present the complicated drama in a tight-pace and orderly manner. It's full of dramas and the shots are beautiful but not sensational. The right casting makes the series even more watchable.

Zaizai Vic Zhou of F4 has brought the leading character, Mars, to life! The director has changed the personality of the leading character to make him more human like - a little naughty, very lively, and very cute. He has made it. Compared to Meteor Garden, his acting skills have practically improved by leaps and bounds! DaS has good acting skills and is very articulate. She interprets the personality of the leading lady, weak but strong, shy but stubborn, very well. The actors and actresses of supporting cast are also capable, each respectively acting their parts.

What the leading man and lady experienced in the drama is depressing. After they meet each other, they face their issues bravely and hand in hand; and conquer their tragedies with strong love. This is the main theme the TV series wants to get across. The other parts such as always supportive friendship and the relationship between father and son, starting from being remote and then progressing to being understanding, are all very moving. In sum, this is a TV series with quality and standards.

Yep.. especially on Sheng's part. There are so many twists as to why he died. It's a weird drama that MAKES SENSE thats why.. this has got to be the coolest one.. Thanks for digging mars as well!

Zhou Yu Min and Da S are yet to conquer the inland movie fans since "Meteor Garden". These two people collaborated to be in an idol play once again in "MARS". This was play once more directed by "Meteor Garden" director Cai Yuexun, "MARS” narrates about Ling (played by Zai Zai Zhou Yu Min), a guy whose dreams for motorbike racing to be his lifelong occupation, but as a result of the family sentimental dispute, he gradually gave up the racing, until he met the fine Qi Luo (big S Xu Xiyuan to play), only then did he regain confidence.

ZZ plays two roles in this drama; the twin's younger brother Sheng, a 16 years old who dies of suicide. ZZ said that between the two roles he played, the "younger brother" (Sheng’s) role is most difficult to develop:

"Because he nearly does not speak, all his moods are kept inside his heart."

When asked his own disposition in real life, is he more the younger brother or elder brother? He said he is in between the two brothers.

Teaming up with Da S, Zhou Yu Min said once again the two of them have superb collaboration since they easily get along well. He also teased and said that once he requested the director to let him kiss Da S in the play. When asked what he thinks about Da S kisses, he is only shy laughing, finally confessed: "It’s good!"

Zhou Yu Min, in the play rides a heavy motorcycle; he revealed that during the racing scenes, there’s actually a licensed motorbike racer who doubled for him. He has a number of scenes where he fought but this went smoothly with only slight abrasions.

This drama that was broadcasted in Taiwan last, made a milestone breakthrough on Zhou Yumin’s performing skill, which earned high praises from critics (not sure on this.. not necessarily critics.. ) . Following the success of MARS, Zhou Yu Min together with Da S will go to Japan in March to promote this drama.

Its broadcast in the inland took quite a long time, it was only approved after going through layer upon layer of review and censorship. By the end of January 2005, Chinese fans will see the “elegant demeanor” version of MARS.

"MARS" covers 17 volumes, aside from the legal copy "MARS", the package also comes with a bonus of 12 stage photos. “VCD product Canada delivers bestows this play the playbill” DVD product shows Zai Zai exposed upper part of the body oil painting on its cover.

Legal copies of the product contains a card where fans will have the opportunity to get the YAMAHA locomotive, the YAMAHA hard helmet and "MARS" center used in the filming.
Moreover, in order to support the organization in the maintenance legal copy activity, the network which "MARS" belongs to will sell this drama according to market wholesale price of 65 Yuan. Since January 5, "MARS" has started to sell in advance in each national big retail shop and the network one's own dealer ding-dong net which already sold the legal copy of 20,000 units. Sales will rise after the national movie fan waits for 20 day, inland full page "MARS" to hit officially in audio and video shops and on network one's own dealer ding-dong net comprehensive line.

uhm yup, theres an MV on ling.. same as Rang WO ai ni, its compilation of scnes from MARS. though the theme here is more on CHEN LING himself unlike Rang Wo Ai Ni which is on LING-QILUO relationship.

i dont know if its still up. i got to download mine from Vicpower :)

though i recommend MVs made by FANS they are better compared to the official ones.. hahahah...

as promise to yo3bx, drop by ako dito :D, coz ive already finish watching Mars! wahoooo... about dun sa NGs, grabe 100 mins? wow! super sarap siguro panoorin nun, kasi almost lahat ng scene ni zaizai sa Mars kailangan nyang maging serious, hehe... hirap kaya nun, :D nweiz, at first the ONLY reason why i want to watch Mars is because of Zaizai http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_3_9.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZNxdm101XXUS) , but when i already watch it, hindi lang pala yun, yung magiging reason ko why i'll love this new series. Its the story who drew me near sa mga characters dito.
I specially wont forget yung scene when Ling ask Da Ye, what if somebody harms Qing Mei, what will Da Ye do. Da Ye said, revenge, and you'll see that Ling's worried face lightens up, because it only confirms that his reaction towards those situation is only a normal, parallel to what Tong Dao keeps on telling him. Thumbs up talaga sa mga artist na nasa series na to' na justify nila yung facial expression na kailangan sa scene and i do hope kasama yung NGs sa ipapalabas sa airing nito dito sa atin eheheh...

hmm...I liked a lot of scenes...the airport scene before Ling flew off to Japan to race, Qi Lou tied a pink ribbon around Lings wrist...that was a sweet sweet scene :)

The part when Qi Lou spent the night at Lings and while they were being intimate Qi Lou was having flash backs, then Ling asked her to open her eyes and he kept saying "it's me, it's me" I loved that scene

I liked the beach scene where they were building a sand castle with these 2 kids...they looked like a young family having fun...wala lang, ganda lang tignan.

another scene I liked is the part towards the end when Ling told his brother that he can't cross over to his side yet.

I can think of more pero paka sobrang spoilers na for those who have yet to watch it :P

thats how i felt after watching the series. di ko nga maarok lol! i call it the aftershock lol! after watching it then ull end up walking for no reason at all lol! same reaction when i watch infernal affairs. i think gma will be so confuse as to what timeslot mars would be aired. o kung papano nila edit out mga delicate scenes kasi masyadong sad and depressing yung buong plot ng story. kaya siguro inuna nalang yung stairway. kahit na ba masterpiece yan hehe!

This part is what makes MARS a little more interesting than it already is (I just love it!): SO HILARIOUS!

"What else? Make sure you don't ride into the river." Ling said, bending lower and pointing to the front.

"Are you ready?" Ling said as he pulled down the visor of Qiluo's helmet.

"Okay." Qiluo said.

"Okay. release the clutch slowly, slowly. release more, slowly, just release a little bit more." Ling said, one hand gripping the back seat of the bike.

Qiluo accelerated.

"Increase the gas flow gradually, gradually. gradually. That's right. Be careful." Ling said, standing and watching.

"Ling, the bike is moving forward." Qiluo shouted.

"You fool. Instead of moving forward, isn't it strange if it moves backward?" Ling said.

"How come the river is coming closer and closer to me?" Qiluo said.

"You're moving toward the river, aren't you?" Ling said loudly.

"Ling, the river is flowing in my direction." Qiluo yelled.

"Wei. Wei. Brake the bike. Brake the bike." Ling yelled and started running. But the bike kept on moving.

The fact that this series is loaded with emotions, the one that the director did a good job on was with humor. This portion sounds really ridiculous but when you put it a bigger perspective, it's a perfect mix of humor and sense--which makes me dig this series all the more. Such a great and sophisticated combo. Have fun with the series! Holla!

Nway I'm from the Philippines and I have checked record bars for the tape soundrack but they dont have any :( they only have cd copies. My cd player is broken so I have no choice but to buy the tape since the music is haunting me very much hehehe. I play the piano and drums and I want to play the said songs so I want to get a demo copy :) so I can start playing it.

Well it is indeed for a fact the BEST series next to MG as for my personal opinion. Once it is aired here in Phil I think it will be much of a hit compared to STH etc....

most of my favorites scenes where from but of course, Da S and Zaizai:D I really admired their tandem, it gives me emotional jitters, makes me feel in love, hurt and happy at the same time.

Da S have really improved in her acting skills and she had moved me in each crying scenes esp the part where Ling was pretending to rape her. I also ove their lovemaking scene, it was done in a very artistic and loving way also the dialogues are superb!!!

All the scenes are worth watching I surelly will not get tired of watching it over and over again like what I did with MG. Hope that Barbie and Vic will visit Phil soon. Last time I saw there physically was way back Happy 50 TV :(

hmmm sorry to hear.. the thing is.. ONLY TAIWAN version is available in the PHILIPPINES.. we dont even have our own version of it. As for me.. this has got to be the best asian series ive watched!;) As for the ratings of this when it will be aired here locally.. I dont know if it would hit it big here.. The story is just too different than the usual dramas we see. It's very complicated one that im not sure if it would click here. Especially the part that deal with psychology. But i guess if youre an anime fan then u can easily relate to the story! ;)

They do have chemistry huh! I admire their relationship REAL (ZZ and Da S) or REEL (LEI and SC, LING and QI LUO). Nah, dotn get me wrong i dont want them to be together in real life.. but i like their "sibling" relationship.. i sometimes refer to them as TWINS! ;)

The campus playboy…On the surface, cool, suave, extremely flirtatious… Ling is a young man who strikes you as easy-going, humorous, the usual delinquent with hardly a care in the world. At college, he is the headache of his teachers but adored by his schoolmates. He cares for nothing except his lifelong dream to be a top motorcycle rider on the racing circuit. He is a person with a quick temper and a violent streak. He can be a great friend, a tender lover but there is a certain coldness and danger about him once he is crossed.

Underneath the surface is a dark, tortured soul. Losing his identical twin Sheng in a tragic suicide which he himself witnessed, it was as if Ling lost his other half. After spending two years in a psychiatric hospital, he never looked into a mirror again and completely forgot important memories of his life. He severed his ties with his father and fended for himself, leading a carefree life without direction, without values and a darkness within him that is bound to resurface.

Ling’s twin brother who committed suicide at 16… the complete opposite of Ling, Sheng is reserved and oftentimes unfeeling. Like Qi Luo, Sheng lives in his own world of art.

Though the two brothers were different, their personalities complemented one another. Sheng realized that whenever he sees Ling's violent and bloody side, Sheng would feel secure and satisfied. Perhaps it was because of this complete darkness was what Sheng wanted to be able to do all along.

Because of his extremely effeminate appearance, Tong Dao has been the target of bullies ever since young. But after getting humiliated and tormented time after time, it provoked the darkness deep inside his heart. He could only take every unhappy and happy thing and crush them entirely in order to appease his fears...

When everyone was deceived by Tong Dao's good image, only Ling sensed Tong Dao's innermost soul, wallowing in obsession and hate.

Ling’s best friend. His responsible nature completely complemented Ling’s devil-may-care attitude. He looks out for Ling like an older brother. Once Ling showed an interest in Qi Luo and when Daye discovered from Qi Luo that she felt the same way for Ling, Daye gives way and prefers to hide his feelings. There is no one who wants Ling more that she does. This was what Qing Mei believed. Until one day when Qing Mei saw Qi Luo’s determination to fight for her feelings, "If you break my hand, does that mean you will let me like Ling?" She was then aware that her love for Ling couldn't compare to this meek petite girl in front of her.

Sha Zhi (Xiao Xiao)

Ling’s high school girlfriend. Before Ling, she was once involved with his twin brother, the quiet Sheng. But she was not contented with that. Then she finds Ling again but he was with Qi Luo now. Possessive as she was, she would stir conflict in order to get Ling back whom she believes is rightfully hers.

VIEWERS RAVE ABOUT MARS

Never miss it, Mars heads like a Titanic towards an iceberg of a climax with shocking revelations. It is an action-packed romance, full of drama, desire, fiery passion, taut suspense, danger, laughter, doubts, etc.

The characters are simply amazing and the chemistry of Ling and Qi luo sizzles. Totally unforgettable.

A date with Mars is like a roller coaster ride of emotions that would leave you breathless each time you've watch it.



What genre should Mars be categorized? It fits all categories:

3. Romance
4. Thriller

and the list goes on... MARS IS THE COMPLETE PACKAGE
The story showed no qualms on going into the dark side of a human being. Those things that you only get to see, hear, read in Psych books. It's all in here.

The word chinovela has been stereo-typed as those series having mediocre themes, where a chink boy struggles to get chink girl, with a lot of schmaltzy happenings thrown in the middle to keep the romance-hungry audience's eyes glued on the screen. And with the plethora of chinovelas available in the market today... it's an absolute rarity to come across a series that defies the norm -- the kind that requires a lil' brain activity going on.


Mars has the capability to disturb... suicide, violence, mentally deranged characters, sex, infidelity, molestation, murder... so bringing it to life on screen is a challenge. But I must say that the writers and the director did a wonderful job on being faithful to the story -- the casting, the lines, the cinematography... even the soundtrack... man.. blew me away.

Having Zhou Yu Min play the lead character Ling is phenomenal. Not only that he exhibits god-like qualities on the looks department -- but his acting utterly gave justice to the cool, bike-riding, hot-headed lady-killer with a murky past Chen Ling. Its as if he was born and molded for the role. Nobody could've made a better Chen Ling.


I also have to give props to Barbie Xu. Her portrayal of Han Qi Luo was exceptional. Cuz originally, the character of Kira on the manga annoyed the hell out of me -- i mean, all she did was to cry and to make out with Rei. But in the series, Barbie was able to draw pity and compassion from the audience for Han Qi Luo by her marvelous acting -- considering that half of the female audiences are dying of envy and are all itching to kill her. Lucky, lucky woamn!! Aaargh!!



And forgive me... but I just have to acknowledge Anjun Cai's character -- Fang Tong Dao. But I wouldn't be ranting about him here for fear of being stoned to death.. Har Har Har. But I just wanna say, Anjun Cai was perfect for the role. He defines Fang Tong Dao for chrissake.


Director Cai Yue Xun did a marvelous job on God Mars. Fans of the series are truly indebted of him. He did an excellent work in blending humor, and yeah, the kilig-kilig moments included, into this esoteric stint. The simplest and most subtle of scenes exudes a colossal force that moved the audience... well... the sharp and quick-witted ones at least.


All in all... MARS is great, great series. No amount of adjectives will satisfy my desire to describe it's effect on me.. and the things that it made me do (checking-in hotels just to watch a goddamn series -- peeps, my dad included, are like "Ok lang kayo?!"). And I think, the desire of the fans for Mars to be aired locally on a good timeslot is not merely for their own sake... it's too good a series for the Filipino audience to miss.

Just wanna say that MARS is the greatest series i've seen in a long time! it's not just some pacute, teeny bopper drama where everything is happy or villains are exaggerated. it's more real..more human...it taps the inner monsters within..everybody can relate to the characters. we may not have the same tragedies but we have all experienced sufferings or difficulties that we managed to overcome in the end.

I will definitely miss this series...no more to look forward to every saturday..but hey, we might still see it through our local channel so I guess all I have to do is wait...

Zhou Yu Min's Best Portrayal by far!~!!!

I've finally finished watching it....I’m speechless...to be honest...it was different from what i expected it to be....I’ve read the manga...but the air Director Cai has created in this series is so much different from the manga...it was like watching a thriller movie hehehehe...a lot of suspense in one episode...even in the first 2 minutes...and I like that...it's a fresh feeling...it's been said that MARS wouldn't be just like a regular usual catchy notchy mushy mushy love drama story...well...it's been proven...Director Cai has done a great job...he is the real master.

Zai Zai and Da s performances were again brilliant...their ability to deliver Ling and Qiluo’s characters to life, it was just amazing and brilliant.


I feel it was real...they make me feel ling and qiluo was real...that actually there are ling and qiluo live out there somewhere...and for zai zai and da s to create this effect...it was just outstanding...their acting was outstanding.

Director Cai really made Ling out of Zaizai, when he rides the motorcycle he looked like he rules the world...there's passion and freedom, an unseen link of the earth, the sky and Ling! I'm starting to be poetic! The mirror scene in the convenience store was awesome, I was so impressed, even without dialogues, just Ling, evil Ling, a mirror and the background*whew*, his acting was so intense!

Mars is just fascinating, out of this world, it's really like nothing I ever seen in a drama. It's so different and so intense, and it's such an attention grabber, it makes you wanna watch it and never stop. I only had this feeling for MG before.
The cast, Vic and Barbie are perfect for their roles, if they pick somebody to do Ling and Qi Luo, they're not gonna do it as well as Barbie and Vic, it's like Ling and Qi Luo were made for them. it's magical, its exhilarating, it's amazing, it's .... MARS!!!!!!!

Mars is another brilliant creation by the makers of MG1..This time....it's deeper..it tackled the different angst of life...it's experimental in a way that it tried to cover a number of genre...action..romance..suspense..drama...comedy..horror..Name it MARS has it!! It's also highly recommended for the psych students as it showed the common personality disorders e.g. paranoia; schizo; violent tendencies of a person; multiple personality; inferiority complex,etc..It's a great production...from cinematography; visual effects; musical score...etc...not to mention the tremendous improvement in the acting of the lead stars...It's a far cry from their MG days...You need to watch to believe!! You'll see a very different Vic & Barbie!! 2 thumbs up for both of them!! i hope They'd be recognized in this series...They deserve to get an award!!

When will this series be shown in Manila?? That's my question until now..I wanna know how the audience will react...The response they will have given that most of us would have MG as the benchmark..Well, i know for a fact that the filipino audience will not be disappointed.

Mars: A Zaizai Junkie’s Review

I must admit I am a Zaizai junkie. This means I am totally addicted to the most gorgeous man on planet earth: Taiwanese actor-singer, Zhou Yu Min, known among his fans as Zaizai, Vic Zhou to the rest of the world and more popularly as Hua Ze Lei in Philippine shores. Ever since I laid my eyes on him as the quiet, philosophical Lei in Meteor Garden, I was back in teeny bopper mode, going absolutely crazy over a celebrity. Only this time, I was a professional in my thirties.

Thus, it was not surprising when, in December last year, I got overly excited upon learning that Zaizai was to film a new series called Mars, opposite his Meteor Garden co-star Barbie Xu, better known among Asian entertainment aficionados as DaS. Also, the fact that the series will be directed by Cai Yue Xun and produced by Angie Cai, all of Meteor Garden fame, I knew it was a series to look out for.

Filming for the series started January of this year. And as the dedicated Zaizai junkie, I kept myself updated with news and pictures posted over different online forums. Upon learning that the series was based on the manga (Japanese comic book), Mars by Fuyumi Soryo, fellow junkies in the online world searched for summaries and scans of Mars. And as we learned more of the story, our hearts burst with anticipation for Zaizai in the role of Chen Ling (lead character Kashino Rei, in the original Mars), a motorcycle racer, college playboy who is flirtatious, passionate, violent and downright, piping HOT.

Zaizai plays this role opposite Barbie’s role as Han Qi Luo, ( Kira, in the original manga), who is the exact polar opposite: quiet, subdued and withdrawn. The entire story itself is dark, intriguing and passionately romantic with an overdose of saccharine moments, a share of violence, a tinge of suicide, obsession and insanity. In short, a Zaizai junkie cannot wait to watch the entire series.

Fast forward to July 31, 2004. Mars begins its initial telecast in Taiwan on CTS. First episode, first scene: Qi Luo (Barbie) sketches in the park, then a voice suddenly speaks. The camera then focuses on Zaizai’s first appearance. I swear, I have died and gone to Zaizai heaven at the sight of that breathtakingly shuai (Mandarin for “handsome”) Chen Ling, all sexy and totally enamoring in that red jacket. The show is indeed eye candy for any Zaizai fanatic.

Yet I never expected to fall in love with the series. Here are my reasons why:

Deeply Fascinating Story

Mars is basically a love story yet it goes beyond the usual formula of boy-meets-girl. The love of Ling and Qi Luo is deep and passionate that one can’t help but be drawn to how their story unfolds. As I watch each episode, I became intertwined in a moving story of true love. It is a COMPLETE love story: the chance meeting, amusing flirtations, a momentary love triangle, heavy conflicts and a touching angle of intimacy. What I admire about Mars is its poignant view of intimacy in a relationship, how the series succeeded in portraying the act of making love as an expression of love and commitment. Like a hopeless romantic, I swooned at the parts where Qi Luo battles with her inability to get intimate with Ling, how one time she responds to his passion but becomes cold the next. You would sympathize with her because of the abuse she went through and how this prevented her from giving in to her true feelings. When Ling discovers the truth behind this, Ling cried (and I cried with him). When Qi Luo revealed her secret, her pain became his pain. I became a witness of how love can overcome the odds. Ling’s love made Qi Luo whole again and when she finally gives herself to him, the way she looked into his eyes and whispered “I love you”, I was able to see what making love meant: a union of souls.

The story of Mars offers much, much more. It explores man’s inner battle between good and evil. It dares to propose the premise that each person has a dark side and how that dark side emerges especially in times of hate and revenge.

Mars is an intricate story. But unlike other dramas, it doesn’t lose its focus on Ling and Qi Luo. Oftentimes, I have watched dramas that have too many storylines which tend to lose its focus. Mars is not like that. Its story is like a web that moves in different, fascinating directions but still all aspects converge into one cohesive point. One is taken on a roller coaster ride of emotions from tears to laughter, from fear, hate, angst and passion.

Powerful Acting

Zaizai is a revelation in this series. In Mars, he plays a role that is totally farfetched from the quiet, selfless and philosophical Hua Ze Lei in Meteor Garden. Audiences will definitely be surprised at how Zaizai portrayed the role of the flirtatious, violent and passionate Chen Ling. He showed very impressive acting for a relative greenhorn. He gave the role depth and meaning with his powerful performance. Playing dual roles in Mars, he was also equally convincing as the quiet artist Sheng, Ling’s twin brother.
Chen ling is a very complex character to play which is a challenge for any actor. Yet Zaizai surpassed all these challenges with flying colors. He portrayed a myriad of emotions in each episode. I laughed at the way he flirted and those funny antics. I cried in his times of anguish and pain. I became engrossed during the times he showed his violent and threatening nature. I was totally enamored by the fierce and passionate way he showed his love for Qi Luo. Zaizai’s acting exuded all these with his exciting and riveting performance. HE BECAME CHEN LING.

Barbie Xu as Qi Luo is equally impressive. Just like Zaizai, Barbie plays a role totally opposite from the head strong and outspoken Shan Cai in Meteor Garden. She gave a stunning performance as Qi Luo, a character scarred by sexual abuse who built a protective wall of silence around her. I was impressed with the way Barbie portrayed Qi Luo’s trauma, especially with the way she reacts whenever she is reminded of that fateful event in her life. She convinced audiences with the way she essayed her role as a woman disturbed with nightmares and how her inner strength conquered all these demons in the end. Barbie became Qi luo with great competence and grace, a perfect complement to Zaizai’s passionate performance as Chen Ling.
One important factor for the success of Mars as a series is the perfect chemistry between its two lead stars. This chemistry is evident in al their scenes together, most especially in those intimate scenes. In Mars, Zaizai and Barbie share a number of love scenes and that chemistry between them coupled with their mature performance will make viewers totally moved by the love story of Ling and Qi Luo.

Another marked performance in the series is An Jun Cai as Tong Dao, the effeminate mental patient who becomes obsessed with Ling. It was a challenging role to play the dark and creepy Tong Dao and An Jun Cai’s performance is a definite scene-stealer.

Brilliant Direction and High Production Values


Cai Yue Xun has done it once again with his brilliant direction of Mars. His magic touch in Meteor Garden I is again evident in Mars. Moreover, he has become much more creative in Mars by giving the drama a surrealistic feel with its imaginative shots and fast paced treatment of the story.
This brilliance is also showcased in the impressive way he handles the cast of Mars. He was able to draw out the right mix of emotions from all the actors, most especially his lead stars.

With each episode, I admire the director’s creativity with the competent performance of the entire cast, to the wonderful cinematography and more than adequate special affects.

Coupled with brilliant direction are Mars’ high production values. From the series itself, one can easily see that Angie Cai spared no expense in its set and production design: from Ling’s rundown apartment to the Chen’s atrocious mansion, to the choice of Ling and Qi Luo’s university and the racetrack in Japan.

Captivating Soundtrack

Finally, Mars has wonderful soundtrack. Instead of using canned music or any pop song as part of its score, the drama has its own creative soundtrack which effectively heightened the power of each scene. The series’ theme “Ling”, brilliantly sung by Alan Ke You Lun, is a riveting song that sets the dark yet exciting tone of the series. It is a dramatic song and whenever I listen to it, I am transported to Ling’s complicated world. I feel his pain, his dreams and the inner angst his soul goes through. I love its rock undertones and emotional beat.

Rang Wo Ai Ni (Let Me Love You) is one of the series’ love themes. A heart-warming duet between Barbie Xu and Vic Zhou, the song speaks of the aspirations of Ling and Qi Luo’s love. The song starts off slow like a love that begins to grow then it bursts into an intoxicating rendition of love that is deep, committed and fervent.

Shuo Ai Wo (Say You Love Me) is another heart wrenching song. Sung by Liang Yi Zhen, it tells about the inner desire to be loved. In most of Ling and Qi Luo’s intimate moments, this song is played, which only heightens the power of their romance that may be turbulent at first but comes out triumphant in the end.

Bai Se Lian Qu (White Love Song), sung by Rara is a light song, very apt as backdrop to Ling and Qi Luo’s light moments. It is a perfect complement to the scenes when Qi Luo and Ling first met, when they first started gaining interest at one another. The song is also played in heart warming moments of Ling, Qi Luo , Daye and Qing Mei and their wonderful friendship. Personally, it is one of my favorite songs in the series.

Other songs of the series are just as beautiful. Lai Ya Yan’s The Hardest Note, Ming Tian (Tomorrow) and Wo Ke Yi (I Can), and the instrumental renditions of the series’ themes, complete an original soundtrack which is as captivating as Mars.


Mars’ Greatest Lesson

Recently, I was able to catch one of the teasers of Mars on GMA Television. The Kapuso station dubbed it as “the Biggest Asian Drama Event of 2004”. I could not help but agree. It is indeed a series that one cannot easily forget. Mars is the type of series that remains in your heart. Just thinking about all my favorite scenes makes me smile and warm inside.

Mars has taught me one important lesson on the power of love: Love can heal the deepest wounds of the soul. Love can indeed move mountains.

I would like to end this piece by quoting some of my favorite lines from Mars as translated by Laiou2002 of Vicpower.net from the original Mandarin dialogue:

"What I want to tell you is that no matter what you have done, no matter what has happened to you, you always remain the same in my heart. You've never changed." Ling said to Qiluo.

"We each started from our respective tragedies and then we met. We can feel each other with just one look. Unless we hold hand in hand, we will both lose the courage to walk out of our tragedies." Ling said to Qiluo.

“….It's just that when tomorrow comes, that sand castle will sure to despair and be destroyed. No matter how big or how beautiful it is, someday it will be destroyed." Qiluo said.

If Filipino fans abroad can’t wait for the coming of GMA International to their respective countries, local fans on the other hand is eagerly awaiting for the coming of the newest soap of F4’s Vic Zhou entitled “MARS”.



About a year ago, news about a part three of the phenomenal hit series “Meteor Garden” which starred F4 circulated in Taiwan and China. MeteorGarden was also a phenomenal hit here in the Philippines when it aired at ABS. The project did not materialize but in replacement is the return collaboration of the original producer, director and two of the stars of "Meteor Garden" Vic Zhou and Barbie Su, about a love story between a silent girl (Barbie) and a young man (Vic) with a dark past about his twin brother. This series was an instant hit when it premiered in Thailand and in other Asian countries like Singapore, Indonesia, and recently in Korea it was just as big. Mars is also set to air in Japan and Greater China next week. GMA was able to buy the broadcast rights to MARS (also known as “Mars God” or “God Mars”) here in the Philippines and as early as December of last year die-hard Vic Zhou fans held a Pep-rally in a swank restaurant along EDSA Ortigas followed by two separate big Christmas parties. But until now fans are still waiting for news as to when GMA will air the series because there is still no definite date of airing in the Philippines. Of course Filipino Vicpower fans are envious of their co-members from other countries -Vicpower.net International Fan Club has chapters all over the world, because they have already seen Mars broadcasted in their local TV Stations but is yet to be aired here. Last we heard, GMA is set to air Mars this month so the prayers of Vic’s fans is for him to visit the Philippines as part of the promotion.

Hi peeps I can't seem to take my eyes off these series!!! I have watched it twice and I still can't get enough!!!! to be honest I am still puzzled as to when Han Qi Luo and Chen Ling officially became a couple!!! I was so excited to post a message here and I hope someone can reply. Furthermore, the soundtrack really haunts me a lot. However, I also find some minor loopholes like in the continuity of the costumes of the main characters, it seems dragging second, in the lovemaking scene of Ling and Qi Luo, the red polo of Qi Luo was catched in the camera supposedly it shldn't be since it like their "climax stage" third, on the last epi where Vic woke up from the operation, he opened his eyes first before the near death experience where it shld be the other way around and lastly, I got confuse with the closing credits, did Qi Luo's stepdad portrayed two roles??? Hope some can clarify this.

But hence, in totality its still a one heck of a blast drama!!! I love MARS

If Filipino fans abroad can’t wait for the coming of GMA International to their respective countries, local fans on the other hand is eagerly awaiting for the coming of the newest soap of F4’s Vic Zhou entitled “MARS”.



About a year ago, news about a part three of the phenomenal hit series “Meteor Garden” which starred F4 circulated in Taiwan and China. MeteorGarden was also a phenomenal hit here in the Philippines when it aired at ABS. The project did not materialize but in replacement is the return collaboration of the original producer, director and two of the stars of "Meteor Garden" Vic Zhou and Barbie Su, about a love story between a silent girl (Barbie) and a young man (Vic) with a dark past about his twin brother. This series was an instant hit when it premiered in Thailand and in other Asian countries like Singapore, Indonesia, and recently in Korea it was just as big. Mars is also set to air in Japan and Greater China next week. GMA was able to buy the broadcast rights to MARS (also known as “Mars God” or “God Mars”) here in the Philippines and as early as December of last year die-hard Vic Zhou fans held a Pep-rally in a swank restaurant along EDSA Ortigas followed by two separate big Christmas parties. But until now fans are still waiting for news as to when GMA will air the series because there is still no definite date of airing in the Philippines. Of course Filipino Vicpower fans are envious of their co-members from other countries -Vicpower.net International Fan Club has chapters all over the world, because they have already seen Mars broadcasted in their local TV Stations but is yet to be aired here. Last we heard, GMA is set to air Mars this month so the prayers of Vic’s fans is for him to visit the Philippines as part of the promotion.

Since sabi niyo mas kakaiba yung story, not the typical love story with love triangle/quadri-angle and throw-in-some-twists-here-and-there-with-a-changed-setting-and-a-little-change-in-plot type of series, maybe GMA doesn't want to risk it (yet). There is a girl who is shy but cute. Her name is Kira. She paints very well. In her class, there is a dandy whose name is Rei. He is hansome and good in every sports. Being a GP racer is his dream. The first time when Kira met Rei is unusual, so she can't stop thinking of him.

That is the beginning part of the comic "MARS" written by Soryo Huyumi. If you read this comic at first, maybe you will regard it as a boy-meets-girl love story and you may say 'It will certain that Kira and Rei fall in love each other and nothing more.' and 'Does it need to have 15 books for that kind of banalities?'.

But Mars is quite different from other romantic stories. Kira was sexually assaulted from her stepfather. Rei had a brother who commited suicide. Their story is far from the other love stories. It depictes how two tortured souls take care of and heal their hurt each other. Mars produced in Taiwan as a drama described the progress.

After Meteor Garden, Poor prince, it is another Taiwan drama based on the popular Japanese comic. Absolutely, the name of characters and situation is set in Taiwan. The high school students in Japan changed into college students in Taiwan, Rei and Kira also changed into Chen Ling and Qiluo.

Zhou Yumin who is one of the member of F4, turned into a motorcycle racer and played Chen Ling. Barbie Hsu who was ShanCai in MG played the role of Qiluo at this time. As always there is almost nothing changed from the original except that it is set in Taiwan.

Ling bothers Qiluo during the class,borrows some money and fillet from her just same as Rei did in the comic. Zhou Yumin and Hsu played naturally.

The story of Ling and Qiluo will be shown through the television tube.

It is glad to see Zhou Yumin and Hsu again after quite a long time. Nowadays, a lot of Japanese daramas have been broadcasted on the TV in Korea, but we haven't seen Taiwan dramas for so long. During that time, Zhou Yumin who was a pretty and cute boy became a man. He fully took in the character of Ling who stands out his strong personality. And he showed his masculine appeal on Mars. Hsu still looks young but she acted the different character from her earlier works. Now she is not ShanCai who yelled at Dao Mingsi desperately but Qiluo who has a long and lugubrious face. Even if televiewers did not read the original comic, Mars will give them great pleasure of watching it, including the comic fans.

MARS should be aired in the Philippines. Sayang naman kung hindi. I dont know what's in the mind of those people who think that this is not a commercially viable series. I admit that this is a thinking series but it has everything, a complete package that can attract all ages and all kinds of viewers.

Zaizai arrived in JAPAN around 12:30 (Japanese time, 3/9) while ago and reportedly there are around 850 fans there waiting for himm.. quite a lot if you ask me! thank you nihonjins! this is quite impressive since zz is just new to japanese entertainment and considering mars is not shown there and well meteor garden aND poor prince were only aired on satellite tv.. the only thing that really booze ZAI up was PARCO (all thanks to this company for believing in ZAI).. and right now ZAi's dream book the one also included in the pic where he is half naked is now No 1 BEST SELLER in HMV japan


there will be a conference tomorrow round i think 7pm on MARS just after the conference for MEteor GArden. lol.. switching from HUA ZEL LEI to LING

what else Oh yeah on MARCH 11, there;s a MEET AND GREET for MARS...

Yo Freakzazoid! I'm diggin yo infos about ZZ's promotion on MARS in Japan....quite interesting. All I can say is that I think ZZ's gotta be the luckiest Asian dude around. I mean, the fact that he's sponsoring freakin PARCO (very popular department store in Japan!) is just one of a kind. Imagine how much dough he'd get out of this (not that he needs anymore of it...haha). It just surprised me coz I had NO IDEA that he'd be sponsorin PARCO. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised...he's amazing. All that talent and popularity--it would be insane to bypass such an awesome and blessed individual. MARS should be aired in the Philippines. Sayang naman kung hindi. I dont know what's in the mind of those people who think that this is not a commercially viable series. ZZ: When I first got up and still felt ok, when I first stood in the beginning and I held onto wires and then the stuntmen said, he did it before, you must not lift up your head, if you do you’ll get dizzy. That place, even though I really did get up there, really my legs were shaking.

WHAT WAS MOST DIFFICULT SCENE?

Da S: I think as of now the most difficult is shooting the abusive step-dad scene. Because this scene the director is shooting…because there are actually with many things the director took the idol drama road. There’s some romance and it’s more the kind that teenagers would like to see. But this violent scene, I don’t know why, was written very realistically. Tang Ge and I were both really into it. The night before this scene was shot I had a lot of pressure. I thought that the night before I already entered the feelings of the drama. And then when it was time to film it I was very solemn. When filming it it was very painful. Everyone at the scene was very quiet. People who’ve seen this were all very grim. It was like everyone witnessed the pain of a girl being abused. And everyone was really hurt. A day after its completion, (Everyone was a little weird when they saw me) I could sense something weird about everyone’s expressions. It was like they really saw me go through this. They felt sorry for me or something like that. But several days later everyone was getting better because after getting to know Tang Ge they gradually thought that this is an actor, it’s not real. After getting to know him longer we slowly broke away from the thought that this was all true. Besides these two days of filming being rather painful to me, later I returned back to real life quickly or else I would go crazy. I have to get into it quickly and get out quickly. I have to hostmy program everyday so there the pain didn’t last for a long time.

WHY IS MARS THE SUBJECT?

Angie: Actually strictly speaking, I think compared to the other idol dramas Mar can’t be said to be more realistic drama. Through this drama we wanted to convey the message that regardless of what problems or dejections you encounter you have to face it bravely and strongly. it's my first time to post dito sa Mars thread. I've finally watched it...grabe, marathon watching for 2 days (cds 1-9 sa first night; 10-21 sa 2nd night). hindi ko mabitawan eh...kahit na ngarag na ako sa puyat, tlgang tinapos ko.

hope ok lang mag-share ng comments/thoughts:

i've always liked zaizai sa meteor garden pa lang...sa kanilang lahat siya na ang pinakagusto ko. so, i was really looking forward to watching him in this series. plus the comments ng mga kaibigan ko na kakaibang Zaizai ang mapapanood dito. At hindi naman ako nadis-appoint. truth to tell, i was really surprised kasi ang layo-layo ng character niya sa nakilala nating Vic sa MG. It only proves na super laki ng improvement niya sa pag-arte...kung dati magaling siyang umarte, mas may depth ngayon ang acting niya. Grabe, tuwang-tuwa ako sa acting niya, very convincing! i cannot put it into words, basta he pulled it off. kung dati, super like ko siya..ngayon, love ko na siya!!!:D plus, gustong-gusto ko ngayon ang physique niya...yummy tlaga! hehehe....at ang daming kissing scenes ha...ang galing-galing na niyang humalik, hihihi!

anyway, i really liked the whole series. it was able to keep me glued to the screen because of its plot. this is a psychological drama with deep and disturbing themes from multiple personality, depression, insanity, repression and alteration of memories, violence, aggression at violence against women (Qi Luo's rape) and children (maltreatment of Tong dao) and a lot more of the psychological jargon.

Being someone who studies human behavior and different aspects of personality, i was able to keep track of what was happening and was able to understand the different issues that it presented. this series is very well crafted along with the brilliant performance of the cast, plus the daring and bold move to explore the themes above.

However, it is the exploration of the said themes that i have some reservations about MARS being aired on local TV. Don't get me wrong, I would love MARS to be shown on TV but definitely PRIMETIME, preferably the last slot on the telebabad schedule. I'm afraid that some scenes might be cut prematurely that in the end, the viewers might lose the essence of the story. anyway, these are apprehensions of my part....

Grabe, tuwang-tuwa ako sa acting niya, very convincing! i cannot put it into words, basta he pulled it off. kung dati, super like ko siya..ngayon, love ko na siya!!!:D plus, gustong-gusto ko ngayon ang physique niya...yummy tlaga! hehehe....at ang daming kissing scenes ha...ang galing-galing na niyang humalik, hihihi!

i echo every word that u said there even the yummy part :p
anyway, i really liked the whole series. it was able to keep me glued to the screen because of its plot. this is a psychological drama with deep and disturbing themes from multiple personality, depression, insanity, repression and alteration of memories, violence, aggression at violence against women (Qi Luo's rape) and children (maltreatment of Tong dao) and a lot more of the psychological jargon.

yeah, too bad if some scenes will be cut cos every scene in mars is very essential to the story. oh well, it's not even shown here yet :(

hehe, kc nung thursday ako nag-start manood... 1 nung hapon tapos 3 nung gabi... nung gabi, while i was watching mars, nag-aaral si ate... she's taking nursing for doctors pati ung review for board exams... kaya araw araw, may exam cya... tapos nakita nya ako na nanonood ng mars... sabi nya "ano yang pinapanood mo?" ... sabi ko, series... mars... then she didn't bother me again... so i thought baka di nya gusto panoorin... tapos kahapon, maaga cyang umuwi... e nanonood ako ng mars nun... chap6 na ata ako nun. tapos tinanong nya ulit kung anong pinapanood ko... sabi ko ulit na mars nga... tapos nkinood na din cya. e mejo gutom na kami pareho so gumawa ako ng merienda... sakto lang na kakatapos lang nung chap6... habang nanonood kc kami, ang dami nyang tinatanong sakin... cyempre, di nya kc nasimulan e... tapos sabi ko, panoorin na lang nya ung chap1 para ma-gets nya tapos balak ko later ko na lang itutuloy ung chaps7 onwards... natapos nya ung chap1, at aliw na aliw cya kay ling... pina-rewind nga nya sakin ung scene na kinukulit ni ling si qi luo... ung "ding dong ding dong..." (fave ko din yan, actually. :D) kaso di na nya natuloy ung chap2 kc umalis cya... nung umuwi cya, i was still watching full house kaya di pa ko maka-start ng marathon ulit... ang salubong nya agad sakin "oi, papanoorin ko na si ling!" :D so ayun, di na ko maka-singit. pero cyempre, nakinood pa rin ako. :D tapos, eto pa... sabi nya na hihiramin daw un ng pinsan namin... sabi ko, di pa ko nakakapag-burn, pinapanood ko pa lang. sabi nya na pag na-burn na daw hihiramin un ng pinsan ko. o diba, ang bilis ng balita! di ko pa nagagawa, may pumipila na agad! hehehe... sabi nga ni kenzai, mabentang mabenta si zz... reply ko sa kanya, worried lang ako kc baka maka-abot un sa office ng pinsan ko... ganun kc ung nangyari sa mg2 ko... though 1 lang ang humiram nun... but still, umabot sa office. :D may pupuntahan nga ako mamayang family reunion... sasabihan ko si ate na quiet muna cya about mars... baka humaba ung pila. :D tapos, hinabol talaga ni ate ung napanood ko... nalagpasan na nga ata ako e... nung nagising ako... around 2am, i think... nanonood pa cya ng mars... i think chap8 kc un na ung k sheng. sabi ko nga, last na nya un... maawa naman cya sa pc ko.. maghapon na un na naka-bukas. hehe, di na din cya naka-tigil! hooked na din cya sa mars. :D

To answer your question:
1. Yes it's from Taiwan
2. In the show its Chen Ling , the actor is Vic Zhou also known as Zaizai (his nickname) He is part of F4.
3. They have copies of God Mars in Chinatown in LA, but it is the China version. NO english subs. Not sure if its DVD though, most probably its VCD and I think it's about $40 and up. Not sure about the prices. ANd I think in some DVD players if you get the CHina version of the series it may not play on American type DVD players. Not unless you have the all region DVD player model. There is also copies from Thai town in LA if that is nearer to your area one bookstore had it. But I think that is dubbed in Thai.
4. Mars will end I think on March 22. So there won't be any new chapters on unless they make a part 2.

I hope that helps...you only started watching it last week? You missed a lot of the good parts. It's almost ending.

to answer your question and add a little more info...

1. Yes, it's a show from Taiwan, produced by Comic Ritz productions. It originally aired over CTS in Taiwan last July 31, 2004 up to October 23, 2004..it had a total of 13 episodes.

2. Chen Ling. Mars is based on the japanese Manga mars by Fuyumi Soryo. The original character of Ling in the manga is Kashino Rei. If you visit the last page of this thread you can read more info on Mars, its plot, cast and characters.

3. Yes there is a DVD version but sadly as what Zashibear said there are no english subs.

4. No. I doubt it if they would make a part two of Mars. Like what I said it is based on the Japanese manga, and the story ends with the last episode. I have read summaries and some scans of the Manga and Mars the drama was more or less true to the manga with only minor details changed.

I'm glad you can relate with us here. We are all crazy about Mars. Would you believe this is already Volume four of this thread. Lol. call us Mars junkies since we have watched the progress of Mars from the time it was just being filmed up to now!

To add more info:

1. Yes from Taiwan.. ZHAN SHEN (MARS) aired in two stations there.. CTS first aired it.. consist of 13 TV Episodes (1hour and half duration, every saturday), aired july to october 2004.. in GTV station. 21 episodes (1 hr duration, weeksdays) aired january-february 2005...

2. Ling or Sheng.. Chen Ling/Chen Sheng are portrayed by actor ZAIZAI VIC ZHOU YU MIN or VIC ZHOU or VIC CHOU or ZAI ZAI ZHOU... there.. you can refer him w/ those names. heheheheh.. Taiwan actor/singer, and is hailed top 1 idol drama actor in their country.

3. Yes you can. there are lots of versions of MARS. you can have the TAIWAN version (which is the most complete)... it includes 100 min Bloopers/Behind the scenes/interviews. The china version has cuts due to china censorship... As you well know, mars is a lil bit violent so some scenes their were deleted... there's also Thailand version, indonesia version.. pertains to SUBS... sadly there's none officially released that had english subs.. but if i were you, you order the Taiwan version. :) you can order online via yesasia.com

4. As mentioned by zashibear and mcbeal, no.. no more new shows on it. And since you just started to watch .. you missed a lot.. so its highly recommended you get the vcd/dvds... Taiwan VCD consist of 21 episodes, china version vcd had 17 vcds only due to cuts.. see how many you will miss if you buy the china version :(
