On the occasion of the press conference for Silk, presented out of competition, the entire crew fielded questions from journalists. Among those present: director Chao Pin Su, actors Karena Lam, Barbie Hsu and Cheng Chang, as well as producer Ming Tu. Highlights.

On the belief in ghosts:
Chao Pin Su: "Even if I live in Asia, where everybody believes in ghosts, where the living 'live' with them, I in no way believe in them."
Barbie Hsu: "I've believed in ghosts ever since I was a kid. At the outset, I was even afraid of reading the script. Then, I confided it to my sister who assured me that it was a good story with certain limits. Sometimes, it was difficult on the shoot, notably for the scene where I wear a lot of make-up. I had stomach cramps and a little fever. My mother told me it was just fatigue and not the resentment of a ghost."

Barbie Hsu on her role: "It was a true challenge to take on this character, I had a lot of fun playing her. Furthermore, there are terrible deaths in the film, which I greatly enjoyed from this point of view. Not to mention the end which really touched me."

Cheng Chang on his collaboration with Chao Pin Su: "I worked in the past with Wong Kar Wai. It was a highly different experience to be directed by Chao Pin Su, because I was able to try out new things with comedy. It is a very interesting film."

Chao Pin Su on the meaning of Silk: "The silk thread represents the ties which unite human beings on the sentimental level. If Karena is very nice, very funny, Barbie, on the other hand, is extremely sensual. These two characters symbolise duality, like love and hate. This film focuses on human relationships."

Karena Lam on the difficulties of her role: "As most of my scenes take place over the telephone, it isn't easy to act alone, without an actor opposite you to respond."

Silk (Chinese literal title: "Eerie Silk"), the latest from Taiwan, is premiered today in Cannes Grand Théìtre Lumi.

In the horror drama, a scientist, who attempts to achieve immortality through the research of the dead, finds the spirit of a 13 year old boy. His new discovery soon draws the attention of many people, including a police officer, the police officer's girlfriend, and the scientist's three assistants. After the police officer discovers a thread of silk, things begin to get out of control. Claimed to be the most expensive film ever made in Taiwan, Silk cost about US$6.2 millions to make. ????

Filmmakers show off their works at Cannes

Though international film festivals have proliferated over the years, the Cannes Film Festival, established in 1939 and this year running a dozen days from May 17 to May 28, remains the world's most prestigious. The festival also continues to be a lightening rod for global controversy over what is and is not socially acceptable artistic expression.

At last year's Cannes, it was images of males doing more than holding hands that fired controversy, in the form of Taiwanese director Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain." This year, most notably, it is the question of how much liberty is allowable in interpreting, or openly fictionalizing, the life of Jesus Christ.

The May 17 opening-ceremony film was "The Da Vinci Code," based on Dan Brown's best-selling novel by that name, which reportedly has sold more than 40 million copies in different languages worldwide. The film stars U.S. actor Tom Hanks and French actress Audrey Tautou and is directed by Ron Howard. Contrary to Christian dogma, which holds that Jesus was a virgin from birth to death, the basic presumption of "The Da Vinci Code" is that he had a wife, Mary Magdalene, and that their progeny continue in an unbroken line up to the present day.

Two press conferences were held on opening night, one featuring the "The Da Vinci Code" director and actors, the other featuring members of this year's awards jury. Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-wai, who is president of the jury, and Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, the youngest judge, fielded most of the questions at the latter press conference. Most of the questions centered on the development of Asian countries' film industries and their prospects for winning wider global audiences.

Wong, wearing his trademark sunglasses, said at the press conference that films are an art "without nationality," judged "without nationality." His sole constant concern, he said, has been "fighting for film." Wong is the Cannes festival's second Asian to head its awards jury. The first non-Frenchman to hold the post, in 1962, was Japanese author Tetsuro Furukaki. Wong is a household name in Taiwan, appreciated for his delicate yet very strong portrayals of love and other emotions.

Previously, several Taiwanese and Chinese have served on Cannes festival juries in several film categories. Among them is Taiwanese director Edward Yang, born in 1947, several of whose films have been selected for participation in the festival. Another is Chinese actress Gong Li, who recently played the leading female role in Wong's short film "The Hand," part of an "Eros" anthology of shorts screened as a single collaborative work. The other two segments, "Il filo pericoloso delle cose" and "Equilibrium," were directed by Michelangelo Antonioni and Steven Soderbergh, respectively.

Wong, born in 1958, won the Best Director award for his 1997 work "Happy Together." The love story about two Hong Kong men was shot in Argentina, Hong Kong and Taiwan. His films "In the Mood For Love" and "2046" were selected as finalists in the festival's Feature Film In Competition category in 2000 and 2005, respectively.

Earlier this year, when it was announced that Wong would be president of the jury, he said that every city has its unique language, and the language of Cannes for him, as well as for other filmmakers, is the language of dreams. Cannes, of course, is a place where Taiwanese seek to fulfill their dreams. Every year, Taiwanese film industry professionals and students of film visit and learn from the festival.

One of this year's Taiwanese attendees is director Chang Tso-chi, who had hoped to enter his new 100-minute film "Hu Dieh," which means butterfly, in the in-competition category, but had to pass up the chance due to a delay in post-production work. It begins with a pair of Taiwanese lovers hunting butterflies and goes on to examine human conflicts.

Taiwanese director Su Chao-pin's "Silk," was selected for screening in the Feature Films Out of Competition category May 24, which marked its market premiere. Produced by Su's CMC Entertainment at a cost of US$6.3 million, it is a horror thriller about how a team led by a Japanese scientist captures the ghost of a boy and learns about its previous embodied life and bodiless life on the other side, with important consequences for the present.

It is Su's second feature-length work. Previously, he has been a scriptwriter for several movies, including "Double Vision," "Three: Going Home" and "Better than Sex," which he also directed.

The principal actors in "Silk" are Japan's Eguchi Yousuke and Taiwan's Chang Chen. Chang's debut as a film actor was in the Edward Yang film "A Brighter Summer Day." Since then, he has acted in Wong Kar-wai's "Happy Together," "Eros" and "2046," but is best known for his role as the desert bandit Lo in Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." Two other Taiwanese films, "Catch" and "The Heirloom," also premiered in the out-of-competition category May 20 and 23, respectively. "Catch," directed by Chen Yin-jung, is an action comedy about police and gangsters. "The Heirloom," directed by Leste Chen, is a horror film about the unusual deaths of a family and discovery of the mystery behind the tragedy decades later.

According to Chen, he wanted to explore the concept of sacrificing one thing for another, especially in the context of family life, based partly on his personal experience. He said he was motivated to make a horror film because Taiwan's film industry has been relatively weak in this genre, and he wanted to make a memorable contribution to it. Despite his tender age--he was born in 1981 and is still studying--he has won recognition as an up-and-coming director in film and video.

The aforementioned films, along with some 80 other Taiwanese films--drama, animation, animation shorts and drama shorts--are being promoted and are available for screening at the Taiwan booth organized by the Government Information Office (GIO). The GIO said it expects international sales of Taiwanese movies to set a record this year.

Over 3,400 film companies from some 70 countries are on hand to market their productions to more than 1,600 buyers. Located beside the Cafe de Palais, the Taiwan booth has attracted film buyers from European countries as well as from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Representatives from U.S. magazines have also visited the booth to gain a better understanding of Taiwan's filmmaking environment.

The GIO also hosted a Taiwan Night reception May 25 from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. It was attended by film industry figures, journalists and government officials from all over the world.

Who are channel CCTV 3’s “Ten Biggest Stars” and “Ten Biggest Female Stars”? I’m not that brave in exposure

Dai S: Kissing and hugging I can accept, it’s actually exposing myself I’m unable to do, because I have absolutely no~~~~~(noooooooo) confidence. In my normal lifestyle I don’t wear revealing clothes…….

R: Our mainland audiences also like you, everyone has watched 《美容大王》, we think that you are someone that has confidence in their figure, right?
Dai S: I have confidence in maintaining myself (looking young) (everyone laughs), but from my point of view I’m not the kind of person who just exposes whenever they want, if I was like my younger sister anything would look good on her, but on me………..
R: In the book it says it is not allowed to ruin Dai S’s hair…….
Dai S: There is no such thing. The first time in Cannes Film Festival, Barbie Xu displayed colorfully, boyfriend Vic Chou reads her news everyday, and also calls her the "giant international star". The film's executive director Khan Lee said Barbie Xu left a deep impression at the video audition, but the leading role has not yet been given the nod from general director Ang Lee, Khan Lee's brother.

Chinese star Zhang Ziyi, who was previously reported to be taking the female lead, is off the cast member list. The report says she is too old for the college student role.

Chinese veteran actor Ge You has been confirmed to play the male leading role, a puppet government official and the target of an assassination plot.

Latest news is that Ang Lee has left Taipei & is now in Beijing, he's at the acting school, auditioning students there. So far, all he said is everyone stands a chance for the role, which is the same as saying nothing, so no definite clue as to who he has in mind.

Remember Mama Xu saying earlier that she is not keen for Barbie to get married this couple of years??? Seems that she has sorta have a change of heart, saying that anything is possible, as long as Barbie is happy. Think she change her mind seeing how happy Barbie is since she started dating ZZ. Who will play Wang Jiazhi, the female lead character, in Ang Lee's upcoming Lust, Caution, has become one of the most speculated subject of the Chinese language press.

Among so many names being mentioned in the news, Zhang Ziyi and Barbie Hsu are the most popular.

Reportedly, Ang Lee's brother Lee Gang said the ideal candidate should be between 19 and 23, should be between 164 and 168 cm, should have a great figure, should be very intelligent and should look elegant.

Barbie Hsu (Hsu Hsi-Yuan), more commonly known as The Big S, is a popular singer and TV hostess. Her acting credit is limited to several TV soap series and two horror flicks.

Other runners-up and rumored runners-up include Zhou Xun, Shu Qi, Jimmy Liao and Zhang Jingchu.

Ang Lee, just auditioned dozens of young women in Taiwan, will travel to the mainland China to meet more candidates in Beijing and Shanghai.
