When you buy a refrigerator or a gas stove, what brands do you usually buy and why? How reliable and durable are they base on your experience?

I had the chance to buy some appliances lately for my house and I can't help but allow the influence of some sort of tradition established in terms of choosing the brand.
My dad's a little brand conscious and whenever we would buy some stuffs, he sticks to a certain brand. I don't blame him in most of the stuffs he buys for the house coz so far they did last for a long time.
Like for example, our refrigerator (since 1979) has been Whirlpool. And since they've lasted for more than 20 years without any repairs (except for rust developed over time) it has served us well. So right now, pretty much I got in the kitchen are all Whirlpool appliances: the range, the fridge, the microwave and the dishwasher.
On other stuffs like entertainment systems, we've been buying Sony brands for decades. From the days when tv's come in wooden boxes, it has been Sony. And I still prefer Sony right now than anything else.
I don't know - I guess in the end, we all prefer what we've trusted and tested over the years. Yours may be different.

I agree with you, buying an appliance is pretty much influenced by what we have seen before. An appliance is a long term purchase. Some would last more than 20 years. Buying the right brand is better than buying the cheapest. Unless of course you expect to replace an appliance within 5 years.

for tv sony is good but i prefer samsung coz sony medyo mabagal response nya especially in changing channels. tsaka base on my experience with samsung sobrang easy to use. jvc is good also. for walkman and discman tlgang maganda ang sony. as for dvd player the best ang pioneer. sa washing machine the best whirlpool. sa oven the best viking but impractical kc sobrang mahal. maganda din tlga viking sa fridge. GE and white westinghouseare really good also as well as whirlpool.

As I can remember, from 1981 to 1991, I had TV set of Hitachi, Pansonic and Samsung, they all gone. the shortest life was Samsung, last just about 3 years. Panasonic last about 6 years, and Hitachi tv had been used for few years before transfered to my new house and it got sick after settled at our new home for the next two years. A Sony tv has been used until to-day, it came with my wife and kids (the over-weight may buy another new one here, she doesn't realize that!) 15 years has passed and it still working fine just there was a little problem with the transformer inside, three times repair and still got the some problem. One day the Sony service center called me to pick up the TV set and told me surely fine for that time, they gave me the TV set with a additional 110-220 transformer, they old me my tv was suppose 90-260 volts automatic but since there is not stock of the spare part so they replace a single voltage transformer for 110 volt, then my tv was downgrade to single voltage tv but it still working fine until to-day just I really don't like the ugly transformer always sit by the side of the unit. Finally I am going to buy another TV set, Sony is my only choice i think.
I also using a micro oven from Whirlpool since 1988. ( my wife brought it here also !) :D
