DON'T be fooled by his dreamboat looks. Taiwanese singer Wallace Huo may croon tender love songs but in real life he is more pragmatic than romantic.
''I'm a typical Scorpio. I'm a very practical person,'' he told The New Paper recently.

In town to promote his debut album, Start, he said in Mandarin: ''I've never given girls flowers except once. It was Mother's Day and I gave my mum carnations, back when I was in primary school.

''After that, I just gave her money that I saved from my daily allowance. I figured the money would come back to me eventually!''

That's Wallace for you.

Hundreds of girls may swoon over his chiselled good looks, but if you are lucky enough to date him, expect nothing more than a movie and dinner.

''I'm very down-to-earth and I'm quiet. I don't like to attract too much attention.''

Ironic, considering his choice of a flamboyant, glitzy showbiz career.

Well, to be a singer was his dream.

''Holding the microphone gives me confidence and the desire to perform.''

As early as 1995, the go-getter was signed on by a talent agency. But his plans were derailed as he had to do national service.

His big break came in 2002 when he won a supporting role in the TV drama, Star.

Another three hit TV dramas - Dolphin Bay Lovers, West Side Story and 100% Senorita - and two pictorial books later, his singing dream has finally come true.

Wallace released Start last month. The album comprises mostly love ballads.

So is his sensitive lover image deliberate? He said: ''It's not. It's just that my vocals are more suited to mid-range love ballads.''

Actually, he does not even consider himself a good lover.

''My career is not even stable yet and I have no time to devote to a girlfriend,'' said the bachelor.

But he did manage to romance - on screen anyway - the very lovely Rosamund Kwan in the music video for his single Ni De Di Yi (Mandarin for Your Number One).

He plays a bodyguard who protects her, which is also the story line of their upcoming movie, Hairdressing.

''We had spent two to three months filming in China previously, so there was already a natural chemistry between us.''

On being labelled an ''ou xiang'' (Mandarin for idol), he shrugged and said: ''Call me anything you like. It doesn't matter. Dog or pig, idol or singer, anything goes.''

Just don't call him Prince Charming, though. ''I've never thought of myself as a Prince Charming and I'd rather not be one because of the baggage that comes with it.''

I unfortunately dropped "Tien Xia Ti Yi" altogether. The episodes tend to drag, and it appears Wallace is in it only for publicity of his current album, nothing more. It wasn't his series. He is only a supporting player of sorts there.

I only watch when Tammy's role comes around. She plays the daughter of the emperor there. She may be mischievous, but she is what is described as a "total woman" at that time, with some childish mannerisms though.

Wallace Huo Jian Hua, the hearttrob lead actor of many a Taiwanese idol drama (like Westside Story and 100% Senorita) thinks he's in wonderland, when the truth is that he's just in little ole' Singapore.

But who can blame the fella? Yes, he's been squealed over for his good looks and performances on idol dramas, but this is his first foray into the competitive world of Mandopop. He's just launced his singing career with Start, and you could say this is a dream come true for the heart-throb. In between amazement about Singapore's courtesy campaign and cracks about the manay "fines" he's heard we have, Wallace took some time to speak to Teens about his new Starts.

Teens: So, Wallace, what do you think of your first trip to Singapore?

WH: It's been an eye-opener! (Laughs) Singapore is like a wonderland to me! All i knew about Singapore before this trip was from what i watched on travelogues on television, and what my friends and colleagues told me about the place. I've been dying to get here to check the place out myself!

Teens: So, is Singapore what you had imagined it to be?

WH: Not exactly! The first thing that greeted my eyes at the airport was the lush greenery. I didn't know it could be this green, way greener than the streets of Taiwan. All i was was rows and rows of trees, all neatly lined up. The overall impression I got was that the whole cityscape is very systematic, and the city has been very well planned out. It was only later that I realised that almost everything in Singapore is so extraordinarily orderly!

Teens: Does this include the behavior of your fans?

WH: Definitely! My Singaporean fans are extremely well-mannered and organised. I've come across fans from other countries who have a habit of grabbing me out of the blue. But i haven't encountered any kind of rude behaviour here in Singapore. Here, the fans tell me that they like my acting or singing, and they're happy enough just to get to shake my hands. How can you refuse them when they are so courteous about it?

Teens: That must be due to our Courtesy Campaign, which started in the early 1980s.

WH: (Incredulously) Really? You actually have a Courtesy Campaign, and it's been running for such a long time? So you're always reminded to be courteous? And you have to remember to say 'thanks you' and 'You're welcome' all the time? (Cheekily) And if you aren't courteous to others, will you get caned? (Grins)

Teens: No, Wallace! Nobody get caned for being rude! You won't get caned even if you're caught chewing gum, not unless you manufacture and smuggle the bubble gum in.

WH: Now you tell me! (Laughs) I've been so terrified of being caught chewing gum that I didn't dare to move my mouth, even on the plane! (Guffaws) I had scary visions of being dragged away to be punished! So... are there more laws and regulations that a clueless newcomer like me should know about?

Teens: Well, there's the possibility of being fined S$150 for not flushing the toilets...

WH: (Cheekily) Will there be an officer stationed outside the loo to check that you've flushed after you leave the cubicle? Heh Heh.

Teens: So are there any myths that you've cleared up on your trip here?

WH: There's the one about the weather being extremely hot. That's so not truth. I think the weather is just right for me! Oh, and I heard stores about the Hainanese Chicken Rice here being superb, and that's definitely true! I kept telling myself that I had to try it after all the stories I'd heard. And all I can say is... wow! I'm not a very big eater, but i managed to down the whole plate of chicken rice!

Teens: And did you try the chilli that came with the rice?

WH: I didn't try it! I love spicy stuff and would loved to try the much-talked-about chilli sauce. Unfortunately, that'll have to wait till next time. I'm supposed to perform when I'm here, so I can't risk losing my voice by eating anything spicy!

Teens: What a professional! So, here's a chance to plug your debut album Start.

WH: (Earnestly) This album really is a new beginning for me. All most people know of me is from the roles they've seen me in television serials and movies. Start allows them to get to know me afreash. They'll see a different side to me, one that perhaps they've never imagined that I had. If they give me a chance and take the time to listen to my album, I hope the audience will be able to accept me as a singer, to see me as "Wallace Huo, the singer", and not "Wallance Huo, the actor".

Teens: We hear that you've always wanted to sing, even before you were bitten by the acting bug?

WH: That's absolutely right! I've always been interested in singing, even though acting acme my way first. Don't get me wrong - I'm not turning my back on acting, I'm just returning to my first love. This album will help people to come to terms with the fact that Walllace likes to sing. All I can say is that you can see a little bit of my heart and soul on every song in Start. There's so much more of me to be discovered from my album. If you want to know me better, get a copy of Start and listen to it very carefully. And if you don't already know me, now is the best time to start. (Laughs)

Teens: Just like you've started to like our Singaporen fans, yes?

WH: Yes, just like I love my Singaporean fans. Put that into the article, please! Thank you very much.

When Michelle first came out many people said she looked very much like Jessica Hsuan which Michelle did not deny and even praised as a "lucky friend." Not only did Jessica teach Michelle some acting skills early on when they worked together, Jessica also recommended Wong Jing (the producer/director of "The World's Finest") Michelle when she declined the role of Hoi Tong in "The World's Finest." It is also in the making of this series that Michelle met the two most important men in her life so far, namely Wong Jing and Wallace Huo.

"Director Wong Jing is one who taught me on how to better market and establish myself... whereas Wallace..." as she spoke his name, Michalle's face turned red before saying bravely... "he's become my best friend for life."

It's rare that a female star would proclaim so directly her feelings for another male star, but Michelle is the type to cutely declare… "Even though it was during the making of 'The World's Finest' that we first met, it's very rare for me to meet someone in a series that I feel so connected and understand so easily. Michelle recollected sweetly that while they were on location at "Mok Sek" there was one time when the two of them got into an argument over a small thing and were not on speaking terms. At the time Wallace got sick and was refusing to see a doctor against everyone's advice. Finally, Michelle couldn't help stand it any longer and proactively suggested that she'll accompany him to the hospital personally which Wallace agreed. "That day while the two of us were waiting in the corridors of the hospital, it felt like we were making a movie. The setting sun casted long shadows over us creating such an atmosphere. Even though neither of us spoke, in our hearts, we both knew that our little argument was over."

Does that mean such good friends could turn into romance then? Michelle thought a while and then said, "I don't think that can happen. In any romantic relationship, sacrifices must be made. And currently both of us are still 'new' in the business where our work remains our number one priority. This is a not good time to develop feelings further, better to put it in our hearts and become best of friends instead."

Shu Qi, Kong Wah and Wallace Huo (Fok Kin Wa) yesterday attended a press conference for the China Central Television series HUNG FAI NUI (RED SLEEVE GIRL).

Playing the title character, Shu Qi said that she was not in a good condition. "After taking this role I realized that the temperature has been very hot and I have action scenes. I feel like crying! I am not in good shape right now. The shoot will be especially hard."
Shu Qi said, "My costume is more modern. I feel pretty good about the chance to work in costume. The director, co-stars and crew are all great. After a few days of work I feel very satisfied. Because it is a costume series, the dialogue is more literary so remembering the lines are more troublesome. To me it's a huge challenge. Luckily the director has been very accommodating to me."
Kong Wa said that he would have to say for three months this time. His wife Mak Kit Man would be by his side. Kong Wa said that this was his second television series after leaving TVB. He felt that TVB series had a family feeling and now working outside felt very fresh.

It is by no means an easy job to shoot seven TV dramas in a year, unless you are handsome and popular, and on top of that, with extraordinary perseverance and dedication. Equipped with everything mentioned above, Wallace Huo, the hottest young actor this year, proved himself to be much more than simply being lucky.

This interview was conducted in a Latin-style Mexican restaurant. Wallace was very stylish with his leather jacket and sunglasses. Besides, he was punctual and arrived just after me. I was impressed by the working ethics of this most sought-after young man on screen.



Before the stylist did the make-up for him, Wallace put lotion on his face in an efficient and professional way. He said that cosmetics were something he never imagined before he joined the entertainment business. “Men should be plain. I often see young men with a lot of make-up, and it is so unnatural. I never put things on my face unless it is for work. I am rather conservative in this respect.”

“For men, being natural and simple is better than pretty.”

I praised him for his long and beautiful eyelashes, which made me so jealous. “Come and take them! Men don’t need this stuff at all.” He joked. He didn’t think his beautiful eyelashes were something to be proud of, even if most girls like me don’t have them. “Which part of you do you like best?” I asked. “I never think that I am handsome or there is anything special about my body parts. My nose looks not bad, if you insist me saying something.”

Wallace didn’t like men to be too stylish, but it was OK for girls. “But it also depends on the occasion. It is good to dress sexy or shining in formal parties. Other than that, I like girls to be casual.” He said that he himself was casual and would like his girlfriend to be natural too. Otherwise he would feel stressed in public.

Wallace was honest about his egocentricity in love. He found recently that he always loved himself best, and his beloved car came the second. He never celebrated his birthday or other festivals, because for him, what really mattered was being happy everyday. “It will be tough to date with me, because most time I am focused on myself. I like to keep myself busy and that makes me feel fulfilled.” Wallace revealed his typical Capricorn philosophy.

He followed by saying that he was a bit pessimistic and always felt uncertain about the future when he was 17 or 18. “For example, I felt OK for what I had accomplished last year, but when I look forward, I am not so sure and a bit worried. I had just finished several dramas, and I don’t know why I have to be so worried. It is the same for love. In the midst of happiness, I am always afraid that it will be gone pretty soon…”

“Drama is what makes me who I am today, for good or bad.”

Looking back upon the past year, it was fair to say that the year of 2003 belonged to Wallace. With an astonishing productivity of seven TV dramas in a year, Wallace became the most sought-after young actor and he became more and more “pricy”. Among all his roles, he liked Hsiao-Gang Chung best (At the Dolphin Bay). “He has taste, charm, wisdom, and good looks, while I have nothing except for being younger than him. I was reluctant to leave this role when the drama was just finished, because I liked to have everything Hsiao-Gang had: money, power, and women…. Anyway I adjusted myself and feel better now. If I have one more chance, I would like to put more nuances and materials into this character.”

Although he felt secured when working, he admitted that he almost collapsed under the unusually heavy load: shooting three dramas at the same time and working 21 hours a day. Fortunately he was a Capricorn and he survived with his perseverance. “Capricorn people always stick to their rules. They could be picky and not so gregarious, but they are also very determined and persevered, which is the only good thing about me.”

“An ordinary character with a soul is better than a hero in the dream”

Wallace said that he will cut down the number of dramas this year, and dreamy idol dramas were something he would avoid. “I like to challenge something more real, something that has soul in it, no matter whether it is a delivery person for lunchbox or mails. I don’t want to be dreamy prince any more.”

Making so many dramas and having so many fans, Wallace still doesn’t think himself as someone special. As for his recent news in the tabloids, he interpreted it as “being profitable for the media”. Other than being a bit more careful, he will still be faithful to himself.

I'm not a fan of this kind nga, just bec. I like wallace and ruby, so I tried this one,, luckily it's not like what I expected na heavy drama and heartbreaking, balance ung drama and sweet sya all the time, just the ending that will make you cry so hard.. just note this:: I was really surprised when I found out that Wallace's chatacter was super different in here.. as described by other fans "outgoing and super loving "

I was supposed to be excited, but I am not, because each year I feel there is still much to be done. So the new year is a moment for me to review my last year…..weird, isn't it? I remember on New Year's Eve when people were partying to crazy, I ate beef noodle soup at some small restaurant downstairs of my apartment building. I ordered an extra appetizer and root beer to celebrate the New Year, alone by myself. Me eating the noodle soup at a small restaurant and them screamed and shouted outside for the firework shows…. What an uncoordinated scene! What I am trying to say is, I didn't try to create that solitude on purpose; I am always like that…… So I don't really like the idea of celebrating the New Year and other festivals, and even my birthday… My colleagues and the staff members of the drama team bought me birthday cake; I never want to make it a big event. In fact, I kind of like myself this way….. This self-effacing personality keeps me sober and I never lose myself to this business. I hope I become better in a serious sense, a true growth of mind….



When I don't have to work, I do a lot of sports…. Basketball, jogging, or just walk, sometimes weight training. As I grow older, I become more careful about my health. Basketball is my best love and my mentor. When I play it, I could totally forget the outer world if the feeling goes right…everything around me seems to be slowed down…anyway, it is beyond my words. Besides acting, basketball is another way I gain self-confidence. Those great NBA stars are my role models. In addition to the skills, their determination and personality are also something I would like to learn. I have a habit of putting on the basketball shoes of my favorite player when I walk to the drama studio; by doing so I believe I can turn in the best stuff of me in the acting. Isn't that childish? But I do believe it!



I will keep making dramas this year. I have some new ideas about playing different roles, and I hope I can do better and better in acting, creating characters that are real and soulful. I believe you guys are also looking forward to that.

Modern Beauty has two essential features: modernism and beauty. This is a fashion show, and that tenders down the macho and chauvinistic filming studio a little bit. In addition to the anxiety on the faces of the staff members, who need to speed up the filming, there is this little enjoyment. But having seen a lot of beauties can crank up your desire to see some handsome guys too, especially hunkies surrounded by beautiful girls. Wallace Huo: This series meets all my fantasy about a marriage

How difficult it is to be an actor? To catch up with the filming schedule, the whole team is racing with the limited time. This morning it was chilly and rainy. But the crew arrived on time at 7:30 AM, dressed up, tuned in, all the way till midnight.

This is a scene in Modern Beauty about semi-final in some beauty competition show. Wallace Huo, suited in white, is sitting in the middle of the judges. Well, being an actor is not always as sound and flashy as it seems. For example, in this scene the focus is on girls who stand on the stage for a live-or-death competition. Most actors in the audience seats are nothing more than a background setting, boringly necessary for the show: you have to be there, but not much about the camera. Wallace sits right next to Kristy Yeung; he seems to be perfectly equipped with a respectable, serious look. However, from our several encounters with him, Wallace is absolutely a man with many adorable features and a mind of enrichment. If he is ready to tell you a lie, there must be millions of people falling in front of his sincere face.

Let's first listen to what other people said about Wallace. All the comments had been extremely positive: He is very dedicated to work, never late for filming even when he got a flu. This is not an easy thing for such a famous star. Wallace is also very considerate of his colleagues. He doesn't flatter people, but he will quietly attend to your most trivial needs. From his last show Wu Shi Lan to the current Modern Beauty, the female staff like to call him Brother Hua – doesn't sound so elegant for such a handsome guy, but he takes it with a smile.

People say Wallace is “difficult”. He is Capricorn, and Capricorn is difficult on things you hardly imagine to be any problems. But his considerateness is also beyond your imagination. We interviewed him several months ago. When I gave him the magazine this time, he responded immediately, “We have met before, in SungChiang, right?” He pondered for a few seconds, and mumbled again. “Yes, SungChiang, thank you.” Grabbing the magazine in hand, he took me, the photographer and other staff members to a bright roomy place for this interview.

M: Let's talk about your role in this drama.

W: I am the chief editor of a fashion magazine in this TV. I played this kind of artistic director in the past, but this is my first time being a married man (laughs). Kristy and I get married when we are really young (in the show), and this drama is about the life and the problems we face after getting married. We are colleagues, and how a couple should deal with each other when they are also working in the same office? I think this is particularly interesting.

M: How do you portray the role of a married man?

W: (laughs proudly) With my fantasy and imagination! I never get married before, and I try to act in a more casual way. A married couple should be unassuming; they must put things straight, and confront each other on trivia in daily life. Forget about the sweet love letters. Marriage is all about life, what to but, which is more important, this and that. I had been fantasizing about my own life after marriage, and my conclusion is, it is going to be as ordinary as anyone else. Shopping for dinner together, watching TV, or straddling on the street, thing like that. I experience that kind of dream in this show, and I also instill my fantasy into it. Being natural and unassuming is what I ask of myself in Modern Beauty, except for my job. Since I am a chief editor, I should have some authority in office, but it is another story at home. I match perfectly with Kristy, which really surprises me, because neither of us is married, but we did a pretty good job in the show.

M: You are both Capricorn.W: Yes, and also the director Jeffrey Chiang. So we share a lot of concepts and understanding in common. My next drama is likely to be with Jeff again. We have a nice collaboration and there is no need to switch partners, as long as there is a good role for me to do some breakthrough. It is absolutely great to work with a director with whom you have trust and appreciation.
