TV specials made their impact in the nationwide rating contest for the month of March as the summer season officially unfolds. This is according to the latest Nationwide Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM) results forwarded today, April 9, by AGB Nielsen Media Research to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal).

Manny Pacquiao's anticipated rematch with Mexican foe Juan Manuel Marquez held last March 16 stood out with an impressive 48.6 percent rating to lead the Top Weekend Programs category. In a previous report, the media research firm had already stated that they were already anticipating a good turnout, which is always the case whenever Manny steps on the ring.

Marimar's two separate specials—Marimar Memories and Marimar: Isang Pasasalamat—also fared very well as proven by its 25.9 and 16.1 percent ratings, respectively. The tandem of Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes capped off their phenomenal run by garnering a 38.1 percent rating to lead the race in the Top Weekday Programs for primetime. Marimar aired its last episode on March 14 with an extravagant wedding involving its two protagonists.

Speaking of weekdays primetime, ABS-CBN's Kung Fu Kids, Lobo, and Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus occupied the second, third and fourth spot to prove their tight grip in the nationwide contest.

The Kapamilya network's long-running news program TV Patrol World was also a tough nut to crack. Marking its 20th year, TV Patrol's special presentation dubbed as 20 Taon TV Patrol World barged into the No.6 spot with a rating of 31.3 percent while its regular programming secured the eight spot.

Willie Revillame's Wowowee continues to dominate the weekday programs for the daytime category. For the month of March, Wowowee accumulated a strong 22.1 percent rating followed by Edu Manzano's game show Pilipinas, Game KNB? with a grade of 19.8 percent tucked under its belt.

Eat Bulaga's annual Holy Week special claimed third spot with 18.5 percent. Kristine Hermosa's Prinsesa ng Banyera may not be doing well in Mega Manila but the nationwide results project a different story. Garnering a strong 17.7 percent rating, Prinsesa ng Banyera edged out Mega Manila darlings such as Daisy Siete, Kaputol ng Isang Awit, and Maging Akin Ka Lamang.

For primetime weekend, KC Concepcion's I Am KC lorded over its more experienced foes by topping the category via its 28.8 percent rating. Mega Manila's consistent topnotcher Bitoy's Funniest Videos was locked in a two-way jam with Pinoy Big Brother's Teen Edition Plus: The Big Plus Revealed. Both shows bore identical ratings of 27.6 percent to settle for a bridesmaid finish.

Based on the data, it shows that ABS-CBN programs dominated the NUTAM primetime race while GMA-7 shows ruled the daytime race. Six Kapamilya shows made it in the Top primetime weekday programs while four came from the Kapuso network. In the Top 10 primetime weekend programs, seven are from ABS-CBN and only three from GMA-7.

Meanwhile, among the Top 10 daytime weekday programs, seven are from the Kapuso network and only three made the cut from the Kapamilya network. Six GMA-7 shows and four ABS-CBN programs barged in on the Top 10 daytime weekend programs.

Here are the Top 10 weekday and weekend programs for the month of March based on a survey conducted by AGB Nielsen Media Research among NUTAM households:

May rason ang excitement at tuwa ng aktres dahil dream movie niya ito and she waited eight years bago ito naisakatuparan.

Two weeks and a half siyang nag-stay sa Cuyo Island, Palawan, para tuluy-tuloy ang shooting ng pelikula. Kinailangan din niyang mag-aral ng salitang Cuyonon at sa husay niyang mag-deliver ng lines, hindi halatang nahirapan siyang mag-memorize at nabubulol pa.

Ang best friend ni Judy Ann na si Dante Nico Garcia ang director ng pelikula, kung saan isa rin ang actress sa co-producers. Umabot sa P20 million ang budget nito, hindi pa kasama ang talent fee ng mga artista. Sa ganda ng trailer pa lang, hindi ka magtatanong kung saan napunta ang milyones na nagasta ng mga producers.

Kaya kahit two big movies daw ang makakatapat nito, walang kaba si Juday. Sabi nito: “May kanya-kanyang audience ang mga pelikula namin, pero I’m confident na magugustuhan ang Ploning, dahil matagal ang paghahanda nito. Maganda ang panlaban namin.”

Birthday presentation ito ni Judy Ann na magbi-birthday sa May 11, at ipinagmamalaking 30 years old na siya. Sa April 26 ang premiere nito at sa Apr. 30 ang regular showing.

KBP reinforces 18-minute rule

MANILA, Philippines—The president of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) is a confessed teleserye fan.

Maloli Espinosa admits that, although she watches the news whenever she has time, there’s one TV program she just can’t miss. “That’s ‘Maging Sino Ka Man,’” she says. “Well, I also watch TeleRadyo … ”

Her preference is understandable, since Espinosa was an ABS-CBN executive for 17 years. “But I also listen to Mike Enriquez’s radio program when I’m on the road,” she counters. “He’s a friend and his program helps me on issues I want clarified.”

For the KBP, the big issue these days is its recent re-implementation of the 18-minute per hour TV advertising rule for its 150 member- networks. The KBP consists of owners and operators of radio and TV stations nationwide.

The rule applies to Metro Manila TV stations. For provincial stations, it’s 20 minutes per hour. On radio, ads are limited to 15 minutes per hour in Metro Manila and 17 minutes per hour in the provinces.

A KBP Standards Authority composed of 13 directors, including a priest representing the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, serves as a quasi-judicial body for violators.

Penalties are stiff. Erring TV stations will be sanctioned with the confiscation of the total amount of the commercial, plus 20 percent. For example, if the rate for a 30-seconder ad is P100,000 and the excess time is 1 minute, the guilty party pays P200,000 plus 20 percent.

But the rules are said to be easy on important sports events. The Pacquiao-Marquez boxing match couldn’t be penalized, anyway, because the network that aired it, GMA 7, severed its KBP membership in 2003. The reason given was alleged leniency with ABS-CBN, but the KBP refutes this.

Rules reviewed

Espinosa, who was also KBP president in 1995- ’96, says, “The rule has been in effect for the past decade, except for a one-year moratorium when it underwent review.”

She points out that the need to bring back it back was “revalidated” by the results of a study by the Philippine Association of National Advertisers. Its glaring conclusion: the more ads, the less effective they are.

The rule seeks to eliminate overloading of TV commercials of broadcast networks, which the public hates anyway. Most often, longer commercial breaks allow viewers to switch channels.

Espinosa confirms that consumers have formally expressed displeasure. A viewer lodged a complaint, she says, saying that advertising was cluttering the airwaves.

Espinosa says KBP is out to protect public interest, and notes that the 18-minute rule is proof of such a commitment.

Also, she says, KBP has imposed a lifetime ban on an AM radio commentator for using foul language. She recalls that KBP was responsible for petitioning the Supreme Court to allow media to broadcast live the promulgation of the Joseph Estrada plunder case.

As a service to its members, she points out, the organization even collects unpaid advertising accounts and does its best to protect broadcast commentators from harassment. “These are part of KBP’s responsibility to serve,” Espinosa says.

“Grabe! Masarap ang feeling. It’s going to be a challenge for me as an actor. It’s also going to train me, because I have to be physically fit and in shape. It’s a great learning experience for me, kasi naka-harness ako, may mga stunt, fight scenes. It’s going to test my ability, my patience,” wika ni Jon.

Ang TV host daw kasi mismo ang nag-supervise ng pagpapagawa ng studio ng kanyang noontime show. Siyempre iba pa rin ‘pag hands-on, di ba?

Maganda ang kabuuhan ng set design ngayon ng Wowowee at mas kumportable ang mga manono-od.

Mas malawak na nga-yon ang set nito to be able to accommodate more audience.

Tiniyak naman ni Willie na simula pa lang ito ng ilan sa pagbabagong gusto nilang mangyari sa Wowowee.

Mayroon ding bagong games at mga paku-lo, bukod sa minahal na nating Willie of Fortune. Nari-yan ang Ms. Fit-rum at ang bagong aabangan na HepHep Hurray.

Mas pinalaki rin ang pa-premyo sa Bigtime Pera o Bayong.

Mabuti nga at magaling na ang lalamunan ni Willie. Kulang din sa pahinga ang TV host kung kaya’t nasagad ang boses nito.

SPEAKING OF Toni Gonzaga, the singer-actress-TV host is busy preparing for a repeat of her first major performance, ‘Catch Me,’ on May 2 at the Aliw Theater at the CCP Complex.

The show debuted at the same venue last February 9, in time for Valentine with great success. A repeat is aimed at bolstering Toni’s image as another concert princess. Her producers have unabashedly proclaimed Toni as the new Concert Princess, a move that is so dangerous while it is deliciously seductive.

Branding Toni as the new CP is inviting trouble at this point. First, she has to prove herself before assuming such a title. Second, she can do this by creating a body of work in the live entertainment scene.

Toni’s work has been focused mainly on television and movies, where she admittedly shows strength and some following. But, the concert scene is entirely new to her and it seems preposterous to refer to her, after two concerts, as concert royalty this early.

In time, Toni can probably live up to being a Concert Queen, not just Princess, as befits her age at this point.

Kitang-kita ang lakas ng sexual chemistry nina Aga Muhlach at Anne Curtis sa pelikulang When Love Begins lalo na roon sa eksenang naghahalikan sila sa beach.

Kitang-kita ang laki ng biceps ni Aga habang hinahawakan niya ang mukha ni Anne na seksing-sexy naman sa kanyang suot na two-piece bikini. Sa naturang eksena, obvious din na bigay na bigay si Anne sa pakikipaghalikan kay Aga.

Sa totoo lang, kuhang-kuha ng cinematographer ng pelikula ang ganda ng Boracay, sa famous white sands nito at sa exotic scenery nito.

PANAY tawa ang isinagot ni Piolo Pascual sa pangangantiyaw sa kanya kay Ruffa Gutierrez ng press na bumisita sa set ng Lobo.

It was revealed recently na isa pala sa crushes ni Piolo si Ruffa at buhat noon, parati na silang tinutukso ng press sa isa’t isa.

Ang laging sagot ni Ruffa, si Piolo na lang daw ang tanungin dahil ni hindi naman daw nanliligaw sa kanya ang aktor.

“Hayaan n’yo munang manligaw ’yung tao,” ang say pa noon ni Ruffa.

Nang tanungin namin si Piolo kung kailan ba siya manliligaw, hindi agad nakasagot ang aktor at pangiti-ngiti lang.

“You know, she’s a lovely lady. Nakakatuwa because you know, she’s smart and parang…wow! Nakakatakot lang because you know, maraming factors,” say niya.

Wala na ngang factors, eh, biro namin sa kanya.

“Sino ba naman ako, ’di ba? Para maki…,” biting sabi ni Piolo, pero bago pa man lumawig ang tanungan, pabirong nagpahiwatig ang staff ng Lobo na ang serye na lang ang itanong namin.

Samantala, napag-usapan nga rin pala namin ni Piolo ang tungkol sa pagbabalik-showbiz ni Gabby Concepcion at ayon sa aktor, nasa States daw siya nang time na dumating ito sa Pilipinas.

“At first, hindi pa ako naniniwala because of his case, ’di ba? Pero nu’ng bumalik ako, wow, he’s all over the news, sabi ko. That’s nice, because you know, icon din naman ’yan and ang dami ring nagawang pelikula. Napanood ko ’yung movies nila ni Mega (Sharon Cuneta.)

“I’m happy for the industry and I hope that one day, I get the chance to work with him as well because magaling siya talagang artista. Napakaliit ng showbiz. Dati, I’ve never thought that I could work with Albert (Martinez), pero naka-love triangle ko siya sa Sa Piling Mo. Nakakatuwa ’coz these are the actors whom you grow up watching. Even to get the chance to work with them, magandang experience.”

Sa ngayon, wala pa raw nababanggit sa kanyang plano or line-up na makakasama niya si Gabby. Ang alam ni Piolo, may tatlo siyang pelikulang gagawin sa Star Cinema at nakatakda na siyang magsimula ng isa anytime soon.

Mayroon siyang isang movie with Anne Curtis and Sam Milby na kukunan sa Jerusalem and another one with Angel Locsin. ’Yung isa ay hindi pa raw niya alam, but he heard na ito ’yung with KC Concepcion.

Hindi pa raw niya alam kung alin ang mauuna, pero ang original plan daw talaga, uunahin muna ang movie nila ni Angel.

Sinagot ni Piolo Pascual ang bagong intriga sa leading lady niya na si Angel Locsin nang dalawin ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) ang set ng Lobo sa Boystown sa Parang, Marikina, kahapon, April 9.

Isa sa mga isyu kay Angel ay ang intriga na nagsisisi raw ang young actress sa paglipat niya sa ABS-CBN mula sa GMA-7. Ipinagtanggol naman ni Piolo ang kapareha.

"You just let the soap speak for itself," pauna niya. "A lot of people naman have seen how committed she is. So kung iisipin mo yun, parang these are people na parang walang maisip na maganda or we just don't want to look at the positive things that are happening in Angel's life and career. And we've seen naman, di ba?

"We've seen her grow and, at the same time, nakita naman na may galing si Angel. Yun naman ang hinihingi niya sa ABS-CBN, to give her something, a challenging role and that's what she got," pahayag ni Piolo over lunch kasama ang direktor nila sa Lobo na si F.M. Reyes o kilala rin sa tawag na Direk Erik.

Kuwento ng direktor, "The first confrontation nila [Piolo and Angel], that was one afternoon, they were about to leave for Dubai. We shot that scene, silang dalawa, and major confrontation nila. Palubog ang araw, so tinawid namin. ‘Tapos we found the three of us after the scene. Nalubugan na kami ng araw. We passed by each other after the taping and mabigat ang loob naming tatlo.

"Actually, ang bigat nagsisimula sa kanilang dalawa. Kasi ako, may iba akong iniisip that time. A friend of mine was sick. So, iba yung dala-dala ko. Maya-maya, hindi mapakali itong si Angel. Lumapit siya sa akin. ‘Can I have a heart-to-heart talk with you?' ‘Tapos sabi niya, ‘You know Direk the reason why I transferred?' Sabi niya sa akin, ‘The reason why I transferred is because gusto kong pagandahin lahat ng ginagawa ko. And I felt so bad, I want to cry now and I don't like. Parang nawalan na ako ng gana. Kasi nalubugan na tayo ng araw at alam ko kahit hindi ka magsalita o hindi ka magbuka ng bibig, deep inside my heart I know it wasn't perfect.'

"And the next morning, was it 3 AM. Supposed to be, pack-up sila dahil may flight sila earlier papuntang Dubai. ‘Tapos talagang down, down na down. ‘Tapos funny, kasi sabi ko sa kanya [Angel], 'Anak, I'll do my very best if you will help us find na maisingit natin oras na pumutok ang araw na makakuha tayo. Pakiusapan ko muna ang mga manager ninyo kung puwedeng maka-salvage tayo ng ilang oras before you leave for Manila.

"Hindi kami inabutan ng araw, kailangan na naming umalis. Ang sama ng loob. ‘Tapos nung ipinalabas naman sa ere, it all gained a lot of feedback na beautiful. Kaya pagbalik niya, sabi ko... One, she's the type of who doesn't like yung hindi nagpi-fake. And with such an attitude... Nung pinalabas at ganun kaganda ang remark, sabi ko sa kanya, ‘You see?'

"I think kasi, nung una iniisip ko, ano pa ang ililipat ng isang superstar gaya niya [Angel]? Kung pera't pera lang naman ang habol mo, e, kumikita ka naman. Hindi ka na naghahanap ng stardom, e, star ka na doon sa kabila. So, malaking tanong sa akin yun nung bago siya pumunta sa ABS-CBN.

"'Tapos each day, kaya sinasabi ko na natutunan ko siya, nakikilala ko siya each day na nakakatrabaho ko siya is because mahirap i-fake yun, e. Sasabihin mo pagod ka na, nagte-taping kayo every day, ‘tapos may ganung attitude. Kasi iba ang demeanor niya. Iba ang pakitungo niya sa inyo. Kaya siya lumipat, dahil gusto niyang ma-specialize yung craft ko," mahabang paliwanag ni Direk Erik.

ALL PRAISES FOR ANGEL. Sa ilang buwan na ring pagsasama nina Piolo at Angel sa Lobo, sa tingin ng aktor ay well-bonded na sila ng kanyang kapareha.

"Nakakatuwang kasama si Angel because nakikita mo talaga sa kanya ang dedication sa trabaho," sabi ni Piolo. "Pareho kami. That's what I noticed first when I started working with her. Nakita ko talaga sa kanya yung enthusiasm to learn, to perfect her craft. And you know, more than earning, more than working, her passion really is to become better. Makikita mo talaga na mahal niya yung craft niya.

"Doon kami magkapareho and, personally, because of that, nagkakaroon kami ng parang... Pareho kami ng gusto sa buhay, so we tend to enjoy more our relationship because ine-enjoy namin ang trabaho namin. Nae-enjoy namin ang ginagawa namin kaya nagkakaintindihan kami. I mean, kahit pagod, kahit the next day, sume-segue kami.

"There was one time before I left for the States for two weeks. I was so diyahe because we had to rush, we had to finish a lot of sequences para maipalabas habang wala ako for two weeks. Because hand-to-mouth nga kami, di ba?

"But you know, I was really impressed because never siyang gumive-up. Never siyang umangal. She didn't complain na from Monday to Saturday, we were taping. Kapag pumutok ang araw, uwi lang kami, baklas. Hindi pack-up, e, baklas kami to another location and she was very supportive. Never siyang nagbigay ng problema sa set para ma-delay. So, na-appreciate ko yun, e, because I know she was doing me a favor para sa pag-alis ko ng two weeks. Siya naman, hindi niya kailangang umalis. Pero dahil kailangan naming magbangko ng episode, she was supportive enough na gawin lahat.

"So with Angel, there's no compromises just like what Direk said. She doesn't fake. I mean, when you tell her, ganito na lang. No, she still goes through the process and nakakatuwa because para kang may katrabaho na always excited, always feeling refreshed, at nakikita mo talaga yung gusto niya sa trabaho," mahabang pahayag ng aktor.

PURELY PROFESSIONAL. Isa rin ito sa mga dahilan kaya hindi naisip ni Piolo na bigyan ng ibang kulay ang relasyon nila ni Angel.

Paliwanag ni Piolo, "I think we're friends, but not to the level na... Because we still want to keep that, not naman wall. But you keep that business between you because your scenes are so difficult, your scenes are so emotional, you're supposed to be lovers. I never entertain a single thought na baka puwede kayo, delikado, e."

Ganun din ba siya sa mga naging leading ladies niya?

"It's not that I never entertained it," paglilinaw niya. "I just want to be professional. I don't want things to happen again sa mga nangyari sa akin before because you can get too personal with your work, specially if you don't deal with techniques, e. We're so real with our emotions. We're playing lovers in the soap. When we have to do emotional scenes, yung mga iyakan, love scenes, we deal with real feelings, e.

"So, off-cam, we have to draw the line. We have to know when to stop. Kasi mahirap, baka mamaya madala mo yung scene. Madala mo yung character mo into real life, baka ma-confuse. So, I think I respect so much my artistry and my craft that I have to draw a line who is Noah and who is Piolo."

Inamin naman ni Piolo na minsan na rin siyang nadala noon ng kanyang emosyon at sinubukang makipagrelasyon sa naging kapareha niya. Nadala ba siya sa naging experience niya noon kaya ayaw na niyang ma-involve this time sa leading ladies niya?

"Nadala in the sense na I'm more careful," sabi ni Piolo. "Because I know kung hanggang saan puwedeng abutin yung paglalaro ng emotion. So now, I'm more careful. I'm just more guarded. I think even Angel, because babae ‘yan, e. Mas madaling...mas vulnerable dahil kailangan nilang umiyak, kailangan nilang mag-draw sa experience. So, mas open ang feelings.

"So, I want to protect that too. I want to give her that space because delikado. I mean, she's just starting out in our network. I want her to enjoy her life. I don't want her to be limited, di ba?" pagtatapos ng aktor.

MANILA, Philippines—Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition” winner Kim Chiu, who turns 18 this month, is quite sure she will be wearing gowns and high-heeled shoes at the grand debut party that ABS-CBN is preparing for her on April 26.

But in a chat with Living Stars last week, Kim said she really prefers jeans, T-shirts and flip-flops to dresses and stylish footwear. “I have a lot of these [formal] things only because I need them for work,” she said. “Pero simple lang po talaga ang mga gusto ko.”

A quick tour of Kim’s bedroom and walk-in closet confirms her bias for the plain and uncomplicated.

Kim owns pairs of expensive brands like Crocs, Aldo and Steve Madden but favors locally made footwear. The young actress also has a huge collection of bags, which she hardly uses.

Kim said she gets a lot of freebies—perfumes, watches, toys, footwear—from sponsors and fans. “I’m lucky because I don’t have to spend so much on these things.”

TOPS

This peach-colored silk blouse is memorable because Big Brother gave this to me and asked me to wear it during one of the eviction nights. I got to use this again for another show after my stint in PBB.

The blue sequined top is a gift from a fan. I first wore it during an ABS-CBN trade launch. I matched it with black pants.

JACKET

I bought this pink Mickey Mouse cotton jacket during my first trip to Hong Kong last March. This is the first item I bought with my Hong Kong dollars.

PANTS

I like wearing pants more than dresses. I’ve had this pair for a long time now. I like the (Swarovski) beadwork on the back pocket.

It’s OK to wear a pair of jeans at least three times before washing it so the color won’t fade easily. But never put it back inside the cabinet after using, just hang it on the wall.

DRESSES

This white Grecian dress (from Sari-Sari) is memorable to me. I bought this in a hurry because I needed something white for ABS-CBN’s Christmas Special. I ran to the nearest mall to buy it.

This old red Chinese dress is special. I wore this in school (Cebu Cherish School on Waling Waling Street, Cebu City) for two straight years during our Chinese New Year celebration. Parang uniform ng waitress sa mga Chinese restaurants.

HATS

Most of my hats are gifts from friends, like this pink-and-purple baseball cap that Ate Pokwang gave me when she came home from Australia. Dapat pasalubong n’ya sa anak n’ya ito.

I use hats when I go to public places where I don’t want to be recognized.

SCENTS

I don’t buy them. They’re mostly gifts from fans. I’m using Pleasures (by Estée Lauder) now. I’m not really into scents. When I finish a bottle I just pick from what I have. Paiba-iba ang amoy ko.

ACCESSORIES

I like watches with thick bracelets. Parang hindi kita sa TV ang manipis. Skechers provides most of my watches—two pieces each month.

I pick earrings and necklaces depending on the occasion. Colorful items are in fashion this summer. If you have a limited budget, you can buy a lot in bazaars for P20 or P10.

SHOES

I buy shoes in different colors so I can easily find a pair if I need to wear any of my dresses. It’s important that I feel comfortable wearing them. My favorite is this pair of gold pumps (by Steve Madden). Gamit na gamit yan. Isa lang po yan. Mahal kasi.

I’m a size 6. I have really thin toes. If I get a pair that’s a size bigger, lumalabas sa sapatos ang mga daliri ko.

I love flip-flops. They’re perfect this summer. I’m lucky I get many in different designs from my sponsor.

Kim’s birthday is on April 19. Her debut will be held at the Glass Garden on Santolan Road in Pasig City. She will have a birthday bash on the noontime variety show “ASAP” on Sunday.

There is no stopping 14-year-old Charice Pempengco from becoming a global singing sensation. From Korea to the U.S. to London, Charice has returned to the United States as guest in the highest-rating talk show Oprah, hosted by media superstar Oprah Winfrey.

Based on the show's teaser for May, this particular episode of Oprah will feature children with stunning talents, including Philippine's very own Charice.

Charice confirmed this in an interview with ABS-CBN News. "Mayroon po akong guesting sa Oprah. Tapos na po akong kumanta para sa isa pong episode ng Oprah," she said. Other than that, she refused to divulge any details about her guest appearance.

The young singer just came from London for her guest appearance in the British talk show titled Paul O'Grady Show last Tuesday, April 8. The format of the show is like that of David Letterman and Jay Leno. Charice once again belted her signature song "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" from the musical Dreamgirls, and once again, the 15-year-old singer mesmerized the audience with her powerful voice.

EXPLORING THE WORLD. Before she gained audience worldwide, Charice first became popular over the Internet through the video-sharing site YouTube. A registered user of the site uploaded videos of her performances in Little Big Star, a singing competition in ABS-CBN where she finished runner-up to winner Sam Concepcion. Shortly after that, Charice got her taste of fame abroad when South Korea's talent show Star King invited her to perform in their program. She wowed the audience even the televiewers when she performed high-pitch songs like "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going."

Ilang araw pagkalabas ng official statement ng GMA Network tungkol
sa pagre-release nila kay Cristine Reyes as GMA Artist Center
talent, pumirma naman ng one-year year contract ang kontrobersiyal
na young actress sa ABS-CBN kahapon, April 9, Executive Lounge ng
ABS-CBN Broadcasting, Inc. Kasama ang kanyang kapatid na si Ara
Mina, na siya ring tumatayong manager niya, tinuldukan na ni
Cristine Reyes ang relasyon sa dating mother network at pinili ang
pagiging isang Kapamilya.

Pero bago pa man nangyari ang pagpirma ng kontrata sa ABS-CBN,
binato na ng kabi-kabilang isyu si Cristine. Isa na rito ang
statement ng GMA-7 na nagsasaad na kaya raw nila binitawan bilang
talent ang young actress dahil sa "attitude and behavior" niya.

Sa panayam ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) kay Cristine
kahapon din pagkatapos ng contract signing niya, sinabi niya na
inaasahan na niya ang paglabas ng ganitong mga uri ng negatibong
intriga na tiyak na ibabato sa kanya.

"Actually, before pa, pinagbilinan na ako sa mga mangyayari na kapag
lumipat ako, for sure, may mga bagay na hindi magaganda na masasabi
about me. I'm prepared, that's why composed ako. Alam ko na may
lalabas na mga negative about me at pinaghandaan ko na talaga ang
mga `yan."

THE REASONS. Attitude problem. Hindi pagpapaalam sa guestings niya
sa ABS-CBN partikular na sa Wowowee. Nagmamadaling maging bida. Mas
mataas na talent fee... Ilan lamang ito sa mga sinasabing rason kung
bakit nagdesisyon daw si Cristine na payagan nang umalis sa kuwadra
ng Kapuso network.

Paliwanag ni Cristine, "Actually, hindi ko na kailangan ng approval
ng GMA kung lumabas man ako sa ABS dahil tapos na yung kontrata ko
sa kanila, effective last February 1 pa. Before pa mag-expire ang
contract ko sa kanila, nagpapaalam na ako sa GMA.

"Regarding diyan sa nagmamadali raw akong maging bida, hindi ko
matatawag na nagmamadali akong bida dahil kung yun lang ang gusto
ko, sa meeting ko with them, may offer sila sa akin na maging bida
ako. Bago pa mag-expire ang contract ko sa kanila, December pa lang,
hindi ko na tinanggap ang Joaquin Bordado at ibang shows na inu-
offer nila. Sabi ko, ayoko na, lilipat na ako, at may ibang projects
ako na gustong gawin.

"Regarding sa TF," patuloy niya, "lahat naman ng artista dumadaan sa
ganitong posisiyon at lahat nao-offer-an ng ganito. Business ito.
What do you expect, mas mababang rate? Siguro, mas ginagamit ko lang
ang utak ko.

"Sa akin, kung anuman ang sabihin nilang negative, thank you dahil
pinagtutuunan nila ako ng pansin. Kung sinasabi nilang Cristine
Reyes lang ako, sana hindi nila ako pinag-aaksayahan ng panahon,"
makahulugan niyang pahayag.

Ano ang totoong dahilan kung bakit siya lumipat sa ABS-CBN?

Ani Cristine, "Kasi siguro, lahat ng tao kailangan ng changes sa
buhay nila, na kailangan nating may gawin. Siguro ito na yung change
na sinasabi ko, na turning point ko sa life ko, na malaking-malaking
decision na ginawa ko.

"I think hindi naman nila ako masisisi sa decision kong ito dahil
pinag-isipan kong ito nang maigi. Maraming beses ko itong pinag-
isipan. Hindi lang ako yung tipo na, `Sige, lilipat ako.' Hindi lang
nila alam ang pinagdaanan ko at kung gaano kahirap ang pinagdaanan
ko, at kung gaano kahirap ang paglipat ko."

LETTERS FROM GMA-7. Ayon pa kay Cristine, hindi lang sa kanya
nagpadala ng sulat ang GMA-7 para pigilan siyang lumipat kundi
maging sa ABS-CBN din.

"Totoo yun. Marami akong natanggap na letters coming from GMA, di
lang ako pati ABS. Yung sa akin, ayaw nila ako payagang lumabas sa
ABS dahil gusto nila ako mag-stay pa sa kanila. Yung sa ABS naman,
letter yun para sabihan ang ABS na hindi ako puwedeng kunin dahil
hindi nila ako bibitawan. Ipinakita ko naman sa ABS na tapos na
talaga ang kontrata ko sa kanila [GMA-7] and legality speaking, wala
silang habol," paliwanag ng young actress.

Hindii maiwasang tanungin ang tungkol sa sinasabing espesyal na
relasyon nila ni Willie Revillame. Pero puro "no comment" lang ang
sagot sa amin ni Cristine.

Dalawang pelikula sa Star Cinema, ang remake ng Eva Fonda, 16 na
isasalin sa teleserye, at ang ginagawang teleserye ngayon ni Jericho
Rosales sa Malaysia ang ilan sa mga projects na nakalinyang gawin ni
Cristine sa ABS-CBN.

Sa isyu na idadagdag siya bilang co-host ng Wowowee, nilinaw ni
Cristine na wala sa kontrata niya ang naturang noontime show sa mga
palabas na gagawin niya sa Kapamilya network.

In the case of Jon Avila, who has just landed the plum role of ‘Kapitan Boom’ in an ABS-CBN series, he has had the pleasure (or the distinction) of having punched in the face the likes of Piolo Pascual and Sam Milby.

Avila laughs when told that he threw his punches in the right direction, which is stardom. He twice played villain to the two leading men in separate TV projects.
Meeting the media during a lunch hosted by Active White L-Gluatathione, a skin whitening product which he endorses, Avila said landing the ‘Kapitan Boom’ role is the fulfillment of a childhood dream. He came home to Manila three years ago from London, where he grew up, to train as an actor.

Avila gained notice when he entered ‘Pinoy Big Brother’ as a housemate in its last celebrity edition.

‘I’m working on my Filipino now,’ he said in that thick English accent of his. It looks like he will have to work harder on his acting, instead of his speaking, when the cameras start grinding for Kapitan Boom.

Avila plays the alter-ego of JR Siaboc, who plays the bumbling provinciano transformed into a super-hero (Kapitan Boom, played by a full-costumed Avila). Nothing could be a smarter arrangement.

Jon Avila and Nadine Samonte are the endorsers of ActiveWhite, which comes in the form of capsules, grapeseeed oil extract, even soap. In all candidness, Avila said he slowed down using the product, from every week to every other week na lang, as its use turned him even whiter than his old British white.

The former Miss Los Angeles was named the winner of the run-up to the Miss USA pageant on Nov. 25; three days later Miss California officials informed her of the "human error" that led to the screw-up and asked her to please call the real winner, Miss Barstow Raquel Beezley, to pass on the news.


Silva was told she could keep the actual crown and the $4,500 Miss California USA necklace she had been given—as well as recoup her $1,500 entry fee and compete again for free—but that apparently didn't cut it for the scorned Silva, who turned out to scorned second runner-up.

Alleging fraudulent concealment and misrepresentation, negligence, false advertising, intentional infliction of emotional distress, breach of contract and several other torts, she is seeking at least $500,000 in damages to compensate for the "public humiliation, mental anguish and distress, lost opportunities, lost prizes and lost monies paid to and expended on her behalf."

During the course of its phenomenal run, the local adaptation of the Mexican hit telenovela Marimar managed to shatter rating records. Aside from consistently dominating the primetime block, the show topbilled by Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes surpassed the longstanding record set by GMA-7's fantaserye, Darna.




Garnering an outstanding 52.6 percent rating in its finale episode last March 14, Marimar beat the 52.1 percent grade previously established by Darna on April 14, 2005 in the Mega Manila race.




But while achieving the 50 percent-plus mark for a finale is definitely exceptional, Marimar still failed to break the record set by ABS-CBN's Maria Flordeluna in its concluding episode back in June 22, 2007—well, at least in the nationwide survey.




According to the data obtained by PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) from AGB Nielsen Media Research, Maria Flordeluna still holds the No. 1 spot in the Nationwide Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM) Top Finale Episodes for 2007-2008.




Maria Flordeluna tells the story of an 11-year-old girl and all her efforts to keep her family intact despite difficult circumstances. Written by Marcos Navarro Sacol, the drama series was first heard on radio before TV station RPN-9 made a series in the '80s starring Janice de Belen.




ABS-CBN adapted Maria Flordeluna, casting child star Eliza Pineda for the lead role, and aired its first episode on February 12, 2007. The series bid farewell on June 22, 2007 with a rating of 49.3 percent nationwide. Marimar, on the other hand, scored an overall rating of 43 percent in its final episode to settle for second place.




Completing the Top 5 are three other Kapamilya programs.




Vhong Navarro's Lastikman, which had its last airing on January 25, 2008, notched a 41.4 percent rating, followed by Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson's Sana Maulit Muli with 40.6 percent rating. Completing the list is Sarah Geronimo's Pangarap na Bituin, which accumulated 40.3 percent.




HOLY WEEK DOMINANCE. AGB Nielsen Media Research also provided PEP with the results of the top performing programs during the Holy Week, with ABS-CBN occupying the Top 5 positions.




Leading the way is the TV screening of Vilma Santos's 2000 blockbuster film Anak, which aired on a Good Friday. Anak, which was inspired by folk artist Freddie Aguilar's popular hit song during the '70s, generated 32.4 percent in the nationwide contest.




Not far behind is Aga Muhlach and Claudine Barretto's 2002 romance-drama flick titled Kailangan Kita, which collected 32.2 percent grade when it was shown on Maundy Thursday. Rounding off the list are Maalaala Mo Kaya, Madrasta, and a dubbed version of Jesus.

Ruffa's husband asked her to come back with him to Turkey: Annabelle Rama

Actress Annabelle Rama said business tycoon Yilmaz Bektas has asked her daughter actress-host Ruffa Gutierrez to go back with him to Istanbul, Turkey.

Rama made this announcement during a press conference for her newest endorsement of a brand of food supplement.

"Actually si Ruffa kinonvince siya na sumama na, sabi ko sa kanya (kay Ruffa) huwag kang maging *****. Kasi alam mo bakit? Dito sa Pilipinas may freedom ka na, sikat ka pa. Ang dami mong trabaho, huwag mong sayangin ang swerte mo. Swerte ka ngayon sabi ko sa kanya. Ang swerte minsan lang papasok."

Rama said she is confident that her daughter will not go back to Turkey with her estranged husband.

"Hindi din. Parang nandoon pa din ang takot sa kanya," Rama told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

Rama also shared that her daughter is now more careful and has already distanced herself from Bektas.

Rama said her grandchildren longed to be with their father, which is the main reason they allowed the kids to meet Bektas.

Bektas arrived in the country last week.

Annabelle on the "transfer issue" of Richard Gutierrez

For the first time, Rama also cleared the issue regarding her son Richard Gutierrez's alleged plan to transfer to ABS-CBN.

"Mayroon kasing tsismoso sa GMA na narinig na hindi ako nag-renew ng contract. Ako kasi hindi sa pera kasi kung talent fee walang problema... Kaya hindi naman ako nag-renew kasi may ibang problema sa GMA, hindi sila Gozon kung hindi sa mga staff na hindi pa naso-solve.

"Kailangan kasi ma-solve muna ang lahat ng problema na yan bago ako pipirma. Kasi gusto ko din nakalatag lahat ang kanyang project for two years... Pero yon ay naayos na nag-meeting kami noong isang gabi," Rama explained.

Rama admitted that up to now she still hasn't signed a renewal contract with GMA-7, but added that she will be having dinner with a GMA network boss.

Rama is also busy shooting for her upcoming movie with her daughter Ruffa.

She believes that her movie under Regal Films, directed by well-acclaimed director Jose Javier Reyes, will be a sure hit for this year.

"Blockbuster. Ang feeling ko kasi alam mo kung bakit, maski saan kasi ako pumunta, talaga pinag-uusapan. Tinatanong kung kailan ang showing at manonood sila."

Rama added that she decided to wear hair extensions especially for the movie.

Sembrano hosts public service segment “Hulog ng Langit”

Television and radio anchor Bernadette Sembrano is now the new face of ABS-CBN News and Current Affair’s public service efforts, by hosting the newest segment called "Hulog ng Langit" on "TV Patrol World" and "Umagang Kay Ganda."

After her hit program "Nagmamahal Kapamilya," Sembrano returns to the public service realm with this segment that aims to serve the less fortunate.

"There are a lot of people out there in need of help and there are also a lot of people who are willing to help. That’s why "Hulog ng Langit" will serve as a vehicle that will connect donors and those in need, " Sembrano said.

The decision to make her host the public service segment was unanimous because of her image as a nurturing and compassionate journalist and TV host.

"Bernadette has always been sincere and charismatic to the public. She is known to be a woman with a very big heart and to help those in need which makes her a perfect fit," said ABS-CBN Head of Current Affairs and News Production Luchi Cruz-Valdez.

Hulog ng Langit started airing Monday. It featured the case of Baby Raiza who needs to undergo a very sensitive operation in order to remove what seems to be a an undeveloped twin brother connected to her lower back.

Due to the lack of facilities in Magsaysay District Hospital in Quezon province, "Hulog ng Langit" brought Baby Raiza to the Philippine Children’s Medical Center to undergo further tests.

Sembrano joins "TV Patrol World" anchors Karen Davila, Julius Babao and Ted Failon two to three times a week along with other segment hosts like Kim Atienza and Phoemela Barranda.

The segment will also air on "Umagang Kay Ganda" and will be carried across all platforms including ANC – in their newscasts and plugs – as well as online platform abs-cbnNEWS.com.

The U.S. audience will soon see how their favorite game show "Deal or No Deal" is played in the Philippines, with Kris Aquino as co-host of Howie Mandel. The U.S. program will visit the Philippines from April 22 to 25. Mandel will tape the special episode as part of the show's ongoing World Tour.

ABS-CBN Business Unit Head Alou Almaden said U.S. contestants will be playing the game according to the rules of the Philippine version, with the local Banker and the 26K girls.

"We are proud and excited that the Philippines has been chosen to be part of the show’s world tour," she said.

"It will be an opportunity for us to show our creativity in localizing a global hit program and at the same time, showcase the best of our country in the special two-hour episode."

Since its debut in the Netherlands in 2001, Endemol’s "Deal or No Deal" is now seen in more than 50 nations globally. In the U.S. version, contestants play and deal to win the top prize by opening 26 briefcases with prizes ranging from 1 cent to US$1M.

The Philippine version, which premiered in 2006, has been a big hit and a top-rater for ABS-CBN. Contestants likewise have to choose among 26 briefcases, held by the lovely 26K girls, with values ranging from P1 to P3M.

Aside from the Philippines, the U.S. version of "Deal or No Deal" will also be taping in Estonia and South Africa. As of press time, the people behind "Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal" at ABS-CBN are busy preparing for the special taping to ensure its success.

She believes that her movie under Regal Films, directed by well-acclaimed director Jose Javier Reyes, will be a sure hit for this year.

ABS-CBN, Solar bidding for PBA rights

ABS-CBN or Solar Sports will be the next TV coveror of the Philippine Basketball Association.

The PBA board of governors is now studying the two networks’ bid presentations, hoping to come up with a decision on which outfit to award its exclusive TV rights in its next meeting.

The PBA games will be televised over Studio 23 if ABS-CBN gains the rights. Solar Sports, on the other hand, will have RPN-9 as the PBA TV carrier if it ends up the winning bidder.

ABC-5, the PBA’s TV partner the last five years, has opted not to join the process, sending PBA board chairman Tony Chua a letter yesterday, informing the league that it’s not submitting a bid.

Network top official Bobby Barreiro met their key people in ABC-5 Sports Wednesday night also informing them of the decision not to seek extension of their contract with the PBA which expires at the end of the current season.

“Why make a bid when we know they’ve long been having meetings with ABS-CBN?” said another ABC-5 top official.

“ABC-5 talents were advised not to feel sorry because the network will launch new shows. Employes were also given reprieve that they can look for another job, and it will not be taken against them. Everyone was urged to work hard even more up to the end of the contract. That’s the kind of a partner the PBA is losing,” the same network official said.

Solar Sports, which has been covering practically all sports in the land, local or foreign, including the recent fights of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao, made its presentation only last week.

ABS-CBN, which also carries the UAAP and NCAA games on Studio 23, presented its bid earlier. IBC-13 and NBN-4 aren’t expected to make a bid since they had been the PBA’s TV partners before, leaving with huge debts to the league.

Meanwhile, Red Bull seeks to regain a share of the lead with Coca-Cola as prolific import Adam Parada and the Bulls battle the Talk n Text Phone Pals in the Smart PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum today.

Gie Abanilla returns to the Red Bull bench to assist head coach Yeng Guiao coming off a one-month coaching clinic in the United States.

Returning imports Randy Holcomb and Jameel Watkins face off again in Philippine soil as Alaska Milk and Magnolia clash in the day’s other game.

The Bulls are looking for their third straight win, while the Pals and the Aces shoot for their second win in three outings. The Beverage Masters, meanwhile, are out to check a two-game slump.

In another development, the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants import Darius Rice was spared a major injury after he was rushed to the Medical City Hospital Wednesday night.

“There’s no nasal fracture or dislocation. What was injured was only a soft tissue which has been his problem since high school,” said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio.

The ‘working man’ in Cesar Montano

Some people must have forgotten that Cesar Montano is a certified engineer. But it comes as no surprise to those who know when they learn that Cesar has agreed to be a partner of Holcim Philippines, Inc., one of the leading cement companies in the Philippines, in its Holcim ‘galing Mason Program.

The Holcim ‘galing Mason Program is a seven-day intensive training course which teaches masons the proper way to handle and make the most of the cement they use. They also learn the basics of cement properties, the correct use of masonry tools and equipment, bonds and joints, carpentry, trade mathematics and safety in the workplace.

“My father was a mason before he became a lawyer,” disclosed Cesar. “He was working his way to college and he worked in construction as a mason. I was a mason, too, working in that bridge near my school when it was being constructed. Labor is dignified when you do your best in it. Training will give the workers more self-confidence.”

One of Cesar’s major projects with Holcim is to build community facilities in Baclayon, his hometown in Bohol where he has a resthouse. Through the Holcim ‘galing Mason Program, residents of Cesar’s community will be trained to become skilled and certified masons to give them better work opportunities.

Aside from Bohol, there will be Holcim ‘galing Mason Program trainings in various provinces and regions in the country. The training curriculum was developed by Holcim in partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the Philippine Constructors Association and the National Union of Building and Construction Workers. At the end of the training course, the participants’ masonry skills will get a certificate from TESDA.

The Puga Preso group who tattooed the map of the prison facility on Ocs’s back has finally set the date of their escape. The inmates bully Ocs into joining them because she has the map, but thanks to the help of the Pogi Preso group of Larry (Ryan Eigenmann), Curly (Archie Alemania), and Mo (Eric Fructuoso), Ocs is saved from trouble.

Ocs then helps the three kind convicts to sneak out of prison and take them to Tabuneknek, but she decides not to tell anyone the truth about what really happened. Aga eventually finds out that his aunt is hiding fugitives in their house, but when he learns that Larry was a friend of Ocs's husband Pablo, he understands why his aunt did not report the incident. Meanwhile, Larry tells Ocs how Pablo loved her very much but an unfortunate accident happened that separated the convict from her husband and he has not heard from him since.

Despite having uncertainties about her husband, Ocs is relieved to know that Pablo loves her. But what will she do with the kind and handsome fugitives in her care? Find out in yet another hilarious episode of That's My Doc this Sunday night after Sharon.

"The fact that I get to travel and do all these fantastic activities I would normally pay money to do in my free time, it's like a dream of a lifetime to have to do a show like that. I really enjoyed watching shows like Sports Unlimited and I used to think that the hosts have such a dream job. I also think it's nice that we get to showcase all the different activities and places the country has to offer. The show has been on air for 11 years and we're still finding new stuff to do. It’s confirmed. Bea Alonzo and Mico Palanca are no longer a couple.

A few months back, Bea was more open to discuss her relationship with Mico. She related how Mico was special to her and was even introduced to his family.

But now, they’re no longer an item and we haven’t gotten the side of Bea to tell us what happened. Her love team John Lloyd spoke briefly about it and admitted that he is sad for Bea, whom he considers one of his closest friends in the business.

“I wish they can fix whatever is needed to be fixed,” he said.

While Bea is in Splitsville, John Lloyd is very happy in the company of his longtime girlfriend, Liz Uy. “I hope na patuloy lang ang magadang relasyon namin. Tipong wala kaming problema na ma-encounter.”

Uhm, I think you’re wishing for the impossible John Lloyd. All relationships do have problems and it’s up to you how to cope with them to make you and the relationship stronger.

Nagulat si Piolo Pascual noong marinig niya ang pangalan ni Gabby Concepcion na isa sa mga pinagpipilian bilang isa sa dalawang bagong characters na ipapasok sa second season ng teleserye nila ni Angel Locsin na Lobo. Pero huling balita, hindi na raw matutuloy si Gabby na ipasok sa Lobo dahil mayroon itong bagong proyekto sa ABS-CBN.



Tinanong ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) si Piolo kung nanghinayang ba siya sa balitang ito?

"I'm supposed to do a movie with Angel, but I'm not sure because I signed up with Star [Cinema] for three pictures. So, I'm supposed to start anytime soon. I'm not sure lang kung alin [mga stories], sa rami ng ino-offer nila."



Tuloy rin ba yung plano niya na mag-shoot ng isa niyang movie sa ibang bansa?



"Yeah, yung Jerusalem po. It's a pilgrimage, kino-conceptualize pa rin. It's more of a family drama kaya baka wala akong leading lady doon. But there's one [movie] with Angel."



After that, nakalaan ang natitira niyang pelikula sa pinirmahan niyang kontrata with KC Concepcion. Tatapusin muna ni Piolo ang Lobo bago magsimula sa first movie project nila ni Angel to be directed by Rory Quintos.

"Sabi ko dun sa common friend namin, hook us up for at least a dinner so we can get to know each other more. Hindi ko naman agad ipu-pursue na mag-court sa kanya right away. At least, get to know the person first, ‘di ba?"

"My doors are open. I know naman God is preparing someone best for me, and I believe in destiny. I believe that after so many years... I've waited, I deserve naman someone na talagang para sa akin.



"And I wouldn't wanna...parang, just try it out. Just for the sake of being with someone. Because, you know, I didn't wait this long just to fail. So, in few years time, I'll be able to settle down and have a different life," paliwanag ni Piolo na ang tinutukoy ay ang tuluyan nang paglagay sa tahimik o pag-aasawa.



Bago kami magtapos ng pag-uusap, nagbigay pa ng target age si Piolo kung kailan niya balak mag-asawa.

Sa simula ay ayaw sabihin ni Aga kung bakit ganun ang ginagawa niya?

Pero, dahil sa pangungulit ng press, nagsalita rin si Aga.


Sabi ni Aga, habang nasa Boracay sila ay pumapasok sa isip niya na gusto niya si Anne. Kunsabagay, sa tingin ng mga manunulat, parang nadala si Aga sa role niya, at dahil na rin sa ganda ng Boracay, at sa ganda rin ni Anne.

Kuwento nga ni Aga, bago kinukunan ang love scene niya, dinidetalye muna niya sa ka-partner niya kung ano ang dapat nilang gawin, at kung okey lang ba `yon.


At kapag natapos na raw ang eksena, at su&shy;migaw na ng cut ang director, agad silang naghihiwalay, pero agad din niyang tinatanong ang partner niya, kung okey lang ito.


‘Yun nga raw ang magandang paraan para magtiwala ang mga babae sa mga tulad niyang lalake sa isang love scene sa pelikula.


Anyway, dream come true para kay Anne ang makasama si Aga. At para kay Aga, magandang opportunity ito bilang aktor na makasama si Anne sa pelikula.

ABS-CBN, Solar Sports vie for pro league rights

ABS-CBN, which has for years carried the Philippine Basketball Association games to Filipino audiences abroad on The Filipino Channel, and Solar Sports, have been left to vie for the broadcast rights of the new season of the pro league after current franchise holders ABC-5 decided to end its partnership with the league when its contract expires at the end of the season.

This developed even as the PBA board of governors, after listening to presentations by ABS-CBN and Solar Sports, informed ABC-5 that the board, headed by chairman Tony Chua, said it was “ready to listen to ABC-5 in fairness to our present partners.”

Viva Sports/Standard Today learned that after Wednesday’s games TV director Dong Capinpuyan informed the production and technical staff that ABC-5 would end its coverage of the PBA games when its contract terminates at the end of the current Fiesta Conference.

It was gathered that the new Malaysian partners of ABC-5 were set to infuse new capital for equipment and programming, but did not include the PBA in its plans.

The PBA board has had meetings with ABS-CBN, headed by its vice president for sports Peter Musngi, but no commitments have been made.

But several board members including former chairman Ricky Vargas, who was tasked to lead the negotiations and serve as the board’s spokesman on the broadcast rights, indicated he was impressed by the track record of ABS-CBN in its coverage of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines games and more recently the Ateneo-La Salle game in aid of the PBA Players’ Trust Fund.

The integrated marketing and promotional capabilities of ABS-CBN and the pro league’s access to several of its top-rated and popular TV shows and the possibility of at least one game being telecast live on Channel 2 was considered a major breakthrough in an effort to restore the high double-digit ratings of the PBA during the time of the Vintage and Viva-Vintage coverage years ago.

More women journalists join ABS-CBN

It looks like the ABS-CBN News Group is going to be teeming with women. No, I am no misogynist. My best friends are women, but I am not sure if I like getting news managed by women. I’ve grown up with men making all the decisions in this world, whether right or wrong. Women have the nose for gossip and not the hard news.

Looking closely at the news market lately, I realize that the Filipinos don’t really like news. They like gossip.

That’s the reason tabloids are selling more copies than broadsheets. Showbiz talk shows rate higher than regular newscasts. A newscast with a gossip style in terms of writing and delivery is rating higher than the newscast that is desperately trying hard to look like a straight newscast.

They say that women have a different way of looking at news. C’mon guys. That’s a whole lot of s…t. News is news, no matter which gender looks at it.

Yet, if you’re among the millions of Filipinos who depend on the ABS-CBN News Group for your daily dose of news, here’s what.

Recently, ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. hired Marites Dañguilan Vitug and Glenda Gloria for its online and cable TV news groups.

Vitug is now the editor-in-chief of abs-cbnnews.com, She will manage its content as part of the partnership with the fledgling, but highly politicized magazine called Newsbreak,

Meanwhile, Glenda Gloria has been named chief operating officer of ABS-CBN News Channel or ANC, quite not like the CNN, and, more so, can’t even come close to the reporting of Fox News, and light years away from the quality of news I get from BBC World.

ABS-CBN’s News group head Maria Ressa said: “These two media platforms are our gateways to the world and to a new future. With great journalists—and friends—like Marites and Glenda now helping us chart that future, we can work more efficiently to marry traditional and new media in a way that will serve the public better.”

In addition, she announced ANC’s partnership with Al Jazeerah.

Veronica Pedrosa who was formerly with ABS-CBN but jumped ship after attending a training program at CNN’s Atlanta Center is back, not physically, though. She will be seen in Al Jazeerah’s English language 30-minute newscast from its broadcast center in Kuala Lumpur on ANC weekdays at 4 p.m.

ANC has inked a deal with the Arab news channel for content.

Another Filipino female journalist, Marga Ortigas, also formerly with ABS-CBN, and Probe Team and for some time was CNN reporter/producer, will be seen reporting live for Al Jazeerah.

Ortigas scored a scoop when she was granted an interview with the Abu Sayyaf last year while the group was undergoing a leadership change and the military was pursuing the outlawed group actively. She also did a story on the aftermath of typhoon “Reming,” centering the report on the widespread destruction in Albay.

So now, guys, your news is in the hands of women. Like it or not, they are now in charge.

Director Joey Reyesis known for romances that not only make money but also win awards, like the "Kasal" and "Sakal" movies of Juday and Ryan. He now megs the first team up of Aga Muhlach and Anne Curtis, "When Love Begins," a Star-Viva co-production. What’s the challenge of making another romantic film like this for him?

"It’s always a joy to work with Aga with whom I’m done many films before like ‘Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal,’ ‘May Minamahal,’ ‘Narinig Mo na Ba ang L8est,’ and ‘Kung Ako na Lang Sana,’" he says. "The challenge here is creating a vehicle for him and Anne, who is so unique from all the other young stars we have today in that there’s this fire in her. Siya lang ang may libog and that’s a great challenge for me. She’s definitely not pa-sweet here. Add to this the fact that we shot many scenes for nine days in Boracay. I love Boracay so much. It’s my personal sanctuary and I often go there by myself, so this is very personal for me. Actually, dusa kami kasi sobrang init when we were shooting there but, still, it’s so much fun and we all bonded well."

Is the age gap between Aga and Anne also a challenge for him? "Hindi naman sila mukhang magtiyuhin, ano? Aga’s advantage is he’s so good looking and boyish and Anne naman is playing a mature role and is also very mature in her thinking, so age was never an issue in this movie, even in the two love scenes that they do here."

He has written a beautiful love story for them with a touch of environmental significance. "Aga is Benedict, a lawyer who has become an environmentalist and wants to protect Boracay from the onslaught of business and progress, like the damage being done to its coral reefs. Anne is a rich girl who dances from one flitting relationship to another. She’s also the daughter of Christopher de Leon, a real estate magnate who is creating ecological imbalance in the island. So, doon pa lang, may conflict na sila. But they meet in Boracay, they fall in love there and also break up there, then they meet again in Manila."

Singer Richard Poon gained yuppie fans as a regular in the "Serenading" portion of "ASAP." Now, "ASAP Live" produces his first solo concert at Music Museum on May 1 and 2, "Richard Poon: I’ll Take Care of You." Richard has a Taiwanese mom (a singer there) and a dad who’s a chef from Hong Kong. He was born and raised here along with his elder sister who he says sings even better than him. His dad owns the Mr. Poon chain of restaurants and after his business management course in La Salle, he joined his dad’s kitchen and worked there for six years. But his heart is really into singing and he gained fame as a member of the acoustic group called U-Turn who sang regularly at Tapika Katipunan. It was there that Viva Records discovered them and gave them two albums. They disbanded in 2006 and he wanted to put up a new band but his manager told him to go solo. In a fund-raising affair last year, he was told to sing three old standards.

"I was against it as I’m used to singing pop songs," he says. "It was very hard for me. But the audience in the fund-raising affair liked my singing so much and Eastwood got me to sing with them every Tuesday night. It took sometime before I could sing old songs from the heart as I hated it when dad then would sing ‘Born Free’. But I realized that pop songs became stale after about six months, but old songs, the more you listen to them, the more you love them."

He was then given his own album. ABS got him in January to sing in "ASAP" and he quickly gained his own following. "I never thought I could go solo. I’m just thankful to all my co-singers in ‘ASAP’ who all welcomed me and are all so helpful. Some of them will be guesting in my concert."

No other Chinese singer has really gained wide public acceptance since Jose Mari Chan, who has given Richard (he also composes songs like Jomari) encouraging words. "I’m overwhelmed with all the support I’m getting and I promise to give my best in my Music Museum concert to please the audience."

The MAMS is tasked to aid ABS-CBN in its multimedia lifecycle management and workflow productivity enhancements. IBM will provide powerful hardware infrastructure support, including massive storage capacity that is expected to grow at about 36 percent over the coming years in support of this MAMS project.

Globally, IBM is continuously investing in the media and entertainment industries as proven by the various relationships that IBM has forged along the way with a number of media vendors including Dalet, Masstech and Exanet, who are all partners of ABS-CBN for MAMS.

IBM has the world's largest media and entertainment consulting and services practice with more than 2,500 consultants working on projects. Last year, IBM engaged with ABS-CBN for consultancy services to develop a comprehensive Media Asset Management business requirements and roadmap.
