Nakitang magkasama sa HongKong noong Holy Tuesday sina Mariel Rodriguez at Zanjoe Marudo. Super sweet ang dalawa habang pababa sa escalator ng Gigasport sa may Ocean Terminal, nakayakap ang dalaga sa syota at ‘di alintana kung may mga Pinoy na makakita sa kanila na nangyari nga, kaya nakarating sa amin ang balitang ito.

Nakita rin silang kumakain sa isang Pizza Hut at ganundin ang drama ng dalawa, sweet at si Mariel pa rin ang naka*yakap.

Pati suot ng dalawa’y na-i-text para siguro hindi makapag-deny. Si Zanjoe ay naka-gray and black stripes sweater, jeans at white shoes at naka-shades. Si Mariel naka-sleeveless blue tops at orange na palda raw. Nasa edad na ang dalawa, kaya ‘di maintindihan kung bakit nagdi-deny pa sila sa kanilang relasyon.

Ipinalabas nung Huwebes Santo ang pelikulang Kailangan Kita na pinagbibidahan nina Aga Muhlach at Claudine Barretto. Ilang beses na naming napanood ang pelikula, pero tinutukan pa rin namin uli, yun ang klase ng proyektong hindi mo pagsasawaang panoorin at tutukan.

Naglalabanan sa pagalingan sina Aga at Claudine, perpekto ang pagkakaatake nila sa kani-kanilang papel, nung gawin nila ang pelikula ay alam naman nating malapit nang ikasal si Claudine kay Raymart Santiago at meron nang mga anak sina Aga at Charlene Gonzales pero nagawa pa rin nilang kapani-paniwala ang kanilang relasyon sa Kailangan Kita.

Mas maganda talaga si Claudine kapag dampi lang ang make-up niya, wala pa ring anggulo si Aga, pero sana’y makita uli namin sa kanya ngayon ang katawang napanood namin sa Kailangan Kita.

Medyo lumaki ang katawan ni Aga, meron dapat itong gagawing proyekto uli sa Star Cinema, pero mukhang hindi yun masimulan agad dahil kailangan pang magbawas ng timbang ng guwapo at magaling na aktor.

Hindi kalimut-limot sa Kailangan Kita ang eksena nina Aga at Dante Rivero habang nagluluto ng ginataang laing ang beteranong aktor, tuwing pinanonood namin ang pelikula ay yun ang lagi naming inaabangan, may suntok sa puso ang eksenang yun.

Humigit-kumulang ay ganito ang dialogue ni Dante, “Pare-pareho lang naman ang lasa ng ginataang laing, magkakapareho lang ang sangkap. Iba lang siguro ang timpla ko dahil tuwing ibinubuhos ko na ang gata, kasama nun ang pagmamahal ko sa aking anak at ang mga bagay na hindi ko nagawa sa kanya.”

Hinawakan ni Aga ang palad ng kanyang ama, nagpakilala ito bilang si Caloy, ang anak ni Dante na nagsakripisyo nung iwan nito ang kanyang mag-iina. Yun ang mga titig ni Aga na gustung-gusto namin sa kanyang pelikula, buhay na buhay ang mga mata ni Aga Muhlach sa madadramang eksena, literal na may mata ang lahat ng artista pero isa si Aga sa mga aktor na nakapagtatawid ng dayalog sa pamamagitan lang ng kanyang mga mata.

Ang Kailangan Kita ang isa sa pinakamahusay na pelikula ni Rory Quintos, nabasa rin namin sa credits ang pangalan ni Direk Mae Cruz, isa na ring pambatong direktor ngayon ng Star Cinema.

Kung may Mae Cruz si Direk Rory ay meron namang Direk Cathy Garcia-Molina si Direk Olive Lamasan, sila ang mga guro-estudyante ng Star Cinema, na pare-pareho nang lumilipad nang mataas ngayon sa larangan ng pamamahala ng pelikula.

Katrina serious with moving to ABS?

AFTER a very remarkable performance as contravida in the highly acclaimed telenovela, Marimar which catapulted Marian Riverâ to fame, Katrina Halili is said to be seriously thinking about transferring to ABS-CBN.

She reportedly got peeved with the way her character in Marimar was killed. She was literally fed to crocodiles, or in local parlance “ipinakain sa buwaya.”

The latest we heard is that GMA has laid out a plan for Katrina. Still, some quarters are still instigating her to make a historic jump.

Well, she should follow Regine Velasquez’s lead. Look at Angel Locsin. She had been given a chance to do an interesting teleseries in the other channel but it didn’t rate well as her former shows with GMA.

Maybe, Katrina should think twice.

It's back to normal after ng ilang araw na bakasyon, soul-searching, praying at kung anu-ano pa.

Pero siguradong masiglang muli ang showbiz dahil magsisimula na ang shooting ng Dolphy-Vic Sotto movie. Isang malaking showbiz event ang pagsasama ng dalawang bigating komedyante matapos ang ilang taong pagbusisi sa kuwentong babagay sa project nila.

Wala pa kaming go signal na isulat ang leading ladies nina Dolphy at Vic. But definitely, out na sa project si Marian Rivera. Kung ano ang dahilan, huwag na lang. Bahala na ang mga producers sa parteng ‘yan!

Pero fresh din ang magiging leading lady ni Vic. Seksi, matangkad at mabait!

(UPDATE) Japanese hubby kills Pinay wife and child

Philippine consul general to Tokyo Sulpicio Confiado reported on Saturday that a Japanese bus driver in western Tokyo has admitted to killing his 33-year-old Filipina wife and seven-month-old son Monday last week.

Several Japanese newspapers confirmed the reports saying that Masayoshi Nagano, a 43-year-old driver of Seibu Bus Co, showed up Thursday (March 20) morning at a police station in Higashikurume and said he had killed his wife and son at his apartment two days earlier.

Confiado on Sunday identified the victims as Crisanta Mahusay and her son Naomasa Nagano.

Autopsy results showed that Mahusay died from severe bleeding due to multiple stab wounds. The baby, meanwhile, was killed by strangulation.

Confiado said the suspect surrendered to police and admitted to killing his wife and child because he was worried about an outstanding loan and that he also meant to kill himself but could not do so.

Japanese newspapers said the police quoted Nagano as saying: "My baby cried at night, and I was depressed about my job and the future. I tried to kill myself, too, but I couldn't do it."

A report on the Web site of Japan Today quoted Nagano as saying that he tried in vain to kill himself after killing his family. The news article said police have found evidence that he attempted to hang himself at the apartment, the officials said.

A report on the Web site of Yomiuri Shimbun reported that Lopez had cuts on her head caused by a blade, while the boy was apparently strangled, the police said.

Nagano has been absent from work since Saturday, the police said.

"The embassy is closely coordinating with the police and after consultations with the next of kin the embassy is ready to provide whatever assistance that would be necessary based on the decision of the next of kin," Confiado told ABS-CBN News Channel Saturday evening.

He said the embassy would assist in the repatriation of the remains should their next of kin decide on it.

He said police was still conducting the investigation and expects the speedy resolution of the case considering the "urgency and gravity of the crime".

Pilgrims brave rain as pope celebrates open-air Easter mass

Easter Sunday celebrates the Resurrection of Christ after his crucifixion on Good Friday.

Religious freedom has been a theme of this year's Easter celebrations. At Saturday's Easter vigil, the pope baptized a former Muslim and a critic of Islamic extremism, journalist Magdi Allam.

Good Friday's Way of the Cross procession was marked by meditations penned by outspoken Hong Kong Cardinal Joseph Zen, who referred to the "martyrs" among China's tiny Catholic minority.

Zen is a key figure for Asian Catholics including those in China who are split between the official and clandestine Catholic churches.

After the mass, the pope was to deliver the traditional "urbi et orbi" (to the city and the world) blessing, an occasion to speak out about conflicts and ills besetting the planet.

"To me, these (defectors) have no integrity and I hope the government can formulate a special law," de facto law minister Zaid Ibrahim told state news agency Bernama late Saturday.

"It's high time that we have the Anti-Hopping Law to stop such acts," Zaid, who is a minister in the Prime Minister's Office tasked with judicial oversight, told Bernama.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's race-based Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition faced its worst ever election results on March 8, losing five states and its two-thirds majority in parliament to the opposition.

Emboldened by the results, opposition figurehead Anwar Ibrahim said that ruling coalition lawmakers from the eastern states of Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo island had contacted him to discuss switching sides.

The power bloc there could unseat the government if it changed hands.

But Sarawak parliamentarian Richard Riot has denied speculation amid media reports he would be the first lawmaker to defect to the opposition, Bernama said.

"Out of the blue I became a star but let me announce that it has never crossed my mind to move away from the BN. I am a BN man, voted in under the BN ticket and I will stay put with the BN," he told the news agency.

The chief minister of opposition-controlled Kelantan state, Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, has come out in support of Zaid proposal.

Clinton was apparently referring to his wife and McCain, leaving Obama out in the cold.

Obama advisor McPeak, a retired air force general, responded on Saturday saying: "As one who for 37 years proudly wore the uniform of our country, I'm saddened to see a president employ these kind of tactics."

"He of all people should know better because he was the target of exactly the same kind of tactic when he first ran 16 years ago," he told Obama supporters in Medford, Oregon, with the Illinois senator at his side.

McPeak apparently referred to attacks Bill Clinton sustained in the 1992 campaign from then-president George H.W. Bush, who had raised questions about a trip Clinton took to Moscow in 1970 during the Vietnam war.

McPeak's criticism was even blunter on Friday, when he said, according to television reports, that Bill Clinton's comments "sounds more like McCarthy."

"I grew up, I was going to college when Joe McCarthy was accusing good Americans of being traitors, so I've had enough of it," he said.

Hillary Clinton's campaign swiftly denounced McPeak's comments as "a pathetic misreading" of the president's remarks.

"Comparing Bill Clinton to Joseph McCarthy is an outrage and ought to be retracted," Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson said.

The New York senator's campaign further railed on the Obama camp for an "unremitting assault on her credibility and character," accusing him of attacking her to detract from incendiary statements made by his pastor.

"They are throwing as many bombs as possible because they are intent on deflecting attention from their political problems" of recent weeks, Clinton spokesman Phil Singer told reporters.

An Obama spokesman, Bill Burton, dismissed the rival accusations as "reiterating tired lines of attack with no basis in reality."

The recognition is clearly belated as the craze peaked here last year. Edu Manzano even got the well-loved US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney to dance it with him after an interview in “Umagang Kay Ganda” last year. The dance hit “Papaya” was first introduced in the country in the ‘70s which Edu revived by releasing a dance album last year. When used by the host as a gimmick in “Pilipinas, Game KNB?,” it turned into a national craze with frequent exposure and promo pitches.

Pinagkalooban siya ng network ng sarili niyang drama anthology, ang I Am KC na magsisimulang mapanood sa Marso 29. At huwag nong hamakin, malalakas ang suporta niya na binubuo nina AiAi delas Alas at Albert Martinez sa isang episode tungkol sa babaeng palengkera.

Si KC rin ang dahilan para muling makita ang pagbabalik ni Mr. M (Johnny Manahan, ang namumuno ng Star Magic) sa pagiging direktor, isang episode ng I Am KC ang ididirek niya.

Tuesday, March 25, 2008 Kaaliw ang coverage ng Unang Hirit at Umagang Kay Ganda sa arrival ni Manny Pacquiao kahapon ng umaga.

Kaaliw dahil naisahan ng ABS-CBN (Kim Atienza) ang reporter ng GMA 7 (Unang Hirit) na si Tina Panganiban-Perez. Since ang nasa likod ni Manny ay si DENR Sec. Lito Atienza pagbaba sa escalator sa NAIA, madaling nakausap si Manny ni Kim. Kaya instead na exclusive coverage ng GMA dahil Kapuso si Manny, ayun si Kim ang nag-solo sa pagtatanong kay Manny. In fairness, naka-ready si Kim sa mga tanong niya. So ang nangyari, pasingit-singit na lang ng tanong ang GMA reporter na sinasabi pa ni Arnold Clavio kung anong puwedeng itanong.

Family-oriented ang Ikaw Pa Rin, Bongga Ka Boy pero sobrang nakakatawa raw. Mismong si Robin ang nagkukuwento na everytime na nagso-shooting sila, parang ang gaan ng pakiramdam niya dahil walang mabibigat na stunts at very light ang mga eksena nila ni AiAi na noon pa pala ay impressed na siya sa natural nitong pagpapatawa.

i think gusto nila ilagay sa primetime ang TH pero madami daw kasing mga scenes na hindi pambata. may mga scenes daw talaga na baka hindi makalusot sa mtrcb. baka hindi pa tapos chop-chopin... saka mahaba-haba yata itong series na ito baka hindi pa rin natatapos ang paggawa ng script for dubbing... basta ang daming problema kaya hindi pa naipapalabas.

Making the right move

WHEN the Philippine Basketball Association board of governors, headed by its chairman Tony Chua, meets today to hopefully decide on what course it would chart in terms of its television coverage for the years ahead, we sincerely hope that the board won’t be blinded by money and instead be guided primarily by what’s best for the league overall.

This simply means realizing that the original concept of the PBA was to enhance the sport of basketball and to help increase public awareness of and support for the pro league as an entertainment spectacle. This would in turn strengthen the consciousness of the public of the products and brand names the teams carry and thereby increase sales in the marketplace which is what the endgame is all about.

We gather that the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN has shown interest in acquiring the broadcast rights for a five-year period, which is intrinsically sound since there is a need to effectively reshape the product in terms of its presentation to the public and to break away from the old, stale, stereotyped format that has unfortunately dragged on for years. To innovate and think out of the box takes time and if indeed ABS-CBN, or any other entity for that matter, seeks to provide viewers with a brand new package in many ways, then they would need time to fine-tune the presentation and build on it.

Regaining lost ratings in television is a monumental task and one that can never be achieved overnight. It needs a well-crafted program, a sound promotional effort, improvements in the basic product and above all else, a close working relationship between the league, its individual teams and the franchise holder. It would do the PBA board well to remember that a teamup with ABS-CBN means removing perhaps the biggest competitor in its ratings battle and turning that competitor into a partner.

Besides, it seems less than worthwhile for a giant network like ABS-CBN to invest in the PBA on a short-term basis because it defeats the purpose of entering into the venture at both ends—that of the network and the PBA itself. We must all realize that short-term relationships do not build loyalty and the kind of total commitment and forward planning that the PBA badly needs at this time.

Carlos “Bobong” Velez held the PBA franchise for some 19 years, the last few years in partnership with Vic del Rosario’s Viva Entertainment Group, but circumstances and the pro league’s demands for a huge and unrealistic franchise fee in the end ruined an excellent partnership and effectively began the erosion of the pro-league’s pre-eminent place in Philippine television.

To regain lost ground in television is no easy task, but if there is an obvious path to achieving that goal, it would be to tie-up with an established network that is in the forefront of the quest for viewers in numbers far greater than the present franchise holder. It’s a simple but painful reality that must set aside any relationships built in recent years. The PBA board needs to make the right decision, difficult though it may be, to once and for all break away from a mindset that only sees the money up front, not what can be achieved in overall terms that far exceed the peso value and in the end translates into much more in real terms.

Mediocrity must never be the acceptable yardstick of the PBA. To accept mediocrity even in return for more money, is to sacrifice the values and virtues that the league’s founding fathers established and lived by. It would be a monumental disservice to the public. Our friends in the PBA board must come to terms with the reality that while the PBA is a private association, it is one imbued with public interest and therefore everything it does, every step it takes, should consider the valued standard of public interest.

While we may have had our own personal differences in ideological perception with ABS-CBN in a few instances, we would be the first to concede that the network has class and within that class a whole lot of substance. In other words, behind the frills and the fancy, there is an inherent quality that sets the network apart.

These two attributes are essential if the PBA is to break out of the rut into which it has fallen and become the product it once was during the glory days. This, of course, depends to a large extent on what the PBA as an institution does to enhance its basic product and to remove the slightest taint of sullied integrity.

Being what it is—an entertainment vehicle—the PBA surely cannot find a partner more adept at transforming the product into the total entertainment package it needs to be. The PBA needs a broadcast partner with a vast, fully integrated marketing and promotions arm that would once again fire the imagination of fans and attract a broad new and young audience which must surely be the target of any rational thrust to grow the PBA.

We have many friends at ABS-CBN because in truth, many of them in the sports department originally grew out of Viva Vintage into a higher level of excellence in the network. But far beyond our friendship with vice president for sports, Peter Musngi, whom we have gotten to know pretty well and like very much, is our longtime loyalty and affection for the PBA with our ties going all the way back to its inauguration in 1975.

As in any longtime relationship, there have been ups and downs, disappointments and differences, but in the ultimate our concern for the PBA and our consuming desire to see it move to another level and grow, overrides any other consideration. If the PBA board is able to work in partnership with ABS-CBN, we are confident the dreams we dream for the pro league will become a reality and that is something devoutly to be wished in the twilight of our years.

The poor salon staff knew better than to bring her to pride-of-place part of the salon, and thus discreetly asked if she wouldn't mind getting her beautification project going at an isolated area. Ilang linggo ring nanatili sa bansa si Libay Knoch, ang masugid na fan at kaibigan ng pamilya ni Judy Ann Santos.

Primary purpose ng visit ni Libay from San Diego, California is to be with his only son Jason on his birthday. Jason is on his last year of his nursing course. His dad is a nurse in the government service.

Habang naghihintay si Libay ng birthday ng binata niya, naglimayon muna siya sa China na pag-uwi ay mga rebulto ng Great Wall of China ang pasalubong sa amin.

Saka siya sumabak sa three-day holiday sa Subic kaugnay pa rin ng class reunion nila sa Olongapo.

Mabigat ang puso ni Libay na lumisan ng Pilipinas nu’ng malaman niya ang maling desisyon na naman, hindi lang ng awarding group kundi maging ng Star Cinema.

Q. When did you learn about it?

Noynoy: Two weeks ago, the confirmation was last week.

Kris: The actual confirmation came Holy Wednesday.

Kris: After Christmas, 10 pounds in a span of two months.

Q. Your mother hasn't lost her appetite?

Kris: She's a healthy eater, she eats a lot of fruits, vegetables. She has taken good care of herself for our entire lives. She's never been sick.

I have no recollection whatsoever of her being in the hospital. It never entered our minds that she would get this illness (showthread.php?p=814184#), although our maternal grandmother had this.

Noynoy: She knew she had a problem but it wasn't clear then. When she found out, being a person of faith, said: "Is that so? Well, then God will take care of me."

Kris: Our mother is the one suffering but she never asked, never wavered in her faith in God. She's gone to mass twice with Fr. Arevalo. Perhaps, it's us, her children, who will have to be strong.

Q. Are you at liberty to say at what stage is her cancer (showthread.php?p=814184#)?

Kris: We prefer not to. Is that ok? People might think of other things. We called you to announce this because she said, 'Kris, you be the one to say it.' This is with her approval. We hope people will let us keep the other details private.

Q. Is she in the hospital?

Noynoy: She went to the clinic earlier, she will go to the hospital later.

Q. Will there be an operation

Noynoy: Perhaps, eventually.

Q. If it's cancer, then there's chemotherapy (showthread.php?p=814184#) involved?

Noynoy: Yes, it will start tomorrow, a mild, continuous dose.

Q. What's the prognosis?

Kris: We don't want to speak for the doctor. We leave it to our mother what treatment she will choose. We will be content with what she chooses.

Q. Who decides the medical management?

Noynoy: She (Cory) decides.

Kris: Whatever our mother wants, whatever will bring her peace of mind.

Q. Did she give you any instructions?

Kris: Not to cry, control your emotions. Everyone else will gauge their emotions based on what they see from us. I'm trying my best to keep my end of the bargain. That's her instruction. She emphasized that I should be prepared, you take it one day at a time. There's gotta be a purpose there from God. We see how strong she is. In going through this, we hope it will not be painful for her.

Q. Have you seen her cry?

Kris: No, I dont know in the privacy (showthread.php?p=814184#) of her room. But, in front of us? Never.

Q. Does she want to beat it?

Kris: She said everything is according to His will.

Q. But will she go through everything that science and medicine can offer?

Kris: Yes

Q. Will she face the press?

Fast facts on colon cancer

What is colon cancer?

Colon cancer is cancer that starts in the large intestine (colon) or the rectum (end of the colon). Such cancer is sometimes referred to as "colorectal cancer."

What are its causes?

According to Dr. Armand Crisostomo, a colorectal surgeon and president of the Philippine College of Surgeons, colon and rectal cancer are the 3rd or 4th leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the country. (Lung and breast cancer are the first two causes of cancer deaths.)

However, in almost all cases, early diagnosis can lead to a complete cure.

There is no single cause for colon cancer. Nearly all colon cancers begin as benign polyps, which slowly develop into cancer.

What are the stages?

If your doctor learns that you do have colorectal cancer, additional tests will be done to see if the cancer has spread. This is called staging.

• Stage 0: Very early cancer on the innermost layer of the intestine

• Stage I: Cancer is in the inner layers of the colon

• Stage II: Cancer has spread through the muscle wall of the colon

• Stage III: Cancer has spread to the lymph nodes

• Stage IV: Cancer that has spread to other organs

What’s the outlook?

How well a patient does depends on many things, including the stage of the cancer. In general, when treated at an early stage, more than 90% of patients survive at least 5 years after their diagnosis. (This is called the 5-year survival rate.) However, only about 39% of colorectal cancer is found at an early stage. The 5-year survival rate drops considerably once the cancer has spread.

If the patient's colon cancer does not recur within 5 years, it is considered cured. Stage I, II, and III cancers are considered potentially curable. In most cases, stage IV cancer is not curable.

What is the treatment?

Treatment depends partly on the stage of the cancer. In general, treatments may include:

• Chemotherapy medicines to kill cancer cells

• Surgery to remove cancer cells

• Radiation therapy to destroy cancerous tissue

Stage 0 colon cancer may be treated by removing the cancer cells, often during a colonoscopy. For stages I, II, and III cancer, more extensive surgery is needed to remove the part of the colon that is cancerous.

There is some debate as to whether patients with stage II colon cancer should receive chemotherapy after surgery. This should be discussed with an oncologist.

Almost all patients with stage III colon cancer should receive chemotherapy after surgery for approximately 6 - 8 months.

Chemotherapy is also used to treat patients with stage IV colon cancer.

For patients with stage IV disease that has spread to the liver, various treatments directed specifically at the liver can be used. This may include cutting out the cancer, burning it (ablation), or freezing it (cryotherapy). Chemotherapy or radiation can sometimes be delivered directly into the liver.

While radiation therapy is occasionally used in patients with colon cancer, it is usually used in combination with chemotherapy for patients with stage III rectal cancer.

What are possible complications?

• Cancer spreading to other organs or tissues

• Recurrence of carcinoma within the colon

• Development of a second primary colorectal cancer

Who are likely to have colon cancer?

You have a higher risk for colon cancer if you have:

• Colorectal polyps

• Cancer elsewhere in the body

• A family history of colon cancer

• Ulcerative colitis

• Crohn's disease

• Personal history of breast cancer

Certain genetic syndromes also increase the risk of developing colon cancer.

What you eat may play a role in your risk of colon cancer. Colon cancer may be associated with a high-fat, low-fiber diet and red meat. However, some studies found that the risk does not drop if you switch to a high-fiber diet, so the cause of the link is not yet clear.

What are the symptoms?

Many cases of colon cancer have no symptoms. The following symptoms, however, may indicate colon cancer:

• Diarrhea, constipation, or other change in bowel habits

• Blood in the stool

• Unexplained anemia

• Abdominal pain and tenderness in the lower abdomen

• Intestinal obstruction

• Weight loss with no known reason

• Narrow stools

With proper screening, colon cancer can be detected BEFORE the development of symptoms, when it is most curable.

What tests should one take?

Your doctor will perform a physical exam and press on your belly area. The physical exam rarely shows any problems, although an abdominal mass may be felt. A rectal exam may reveal a mass in patients with rectal cancer, but not colon cancer.

Imaging tests to diagnose colorectal cancer include:

• Colonoscopy

• Sigmoidoscopy

Note: Only colonoscopy can see the entire colon.

A fecal occult blood test (FOBT) may detect small amounts of blood in the stool, which could suggest colon cancer. However, this test is often negative in patients with colon cancer. For this reason, FOBT must be done along with colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. It is also important to note that a positive FOBT doesn't necessarily mean you have cancer.

A complete blood count may reveal show signs of anemia with low iron levels.

How does one prevent colon cancer?

The death rate for colon cancer has dropped in the last 15 years. This may be due to increased awareness and screening by colonoscopy. Colon cancer can almost always be caught in its earliest and most curable stages by colonoscopy. Almost all men and women age 50 and older should have a colonoscopy.

Dietary and lifestyle modifications are important. Some evidence suggests that low-fat and high-fiber diets may reduce your risk of colon cancer.

Jun Lozada started it all. In the porcelain dawn of a February morning, he held a press conference at De La Salle Greenhills, telling the whole world he had been abducted by men sent by the government.

Deriving courage from the army of nuns around him, he said that the country is not only one family, driving a spike straight into the heart of the ruling family. And in words echoing that of his hero, Jose Rizal, he said that sometimes, it’s worth taking risks for one’s country. His voice broke, and then he wept copiously, for all the world to see.

He would do that again during the first Senate hearing that he attended. I was sitting a few feet away from him. Before he started, he embraced a nun, one of around 20 sitting behind him. Then he drank from a bottle of mineral water, wrung his hands, and put his head in those clammy hands. And then he spoke, haltingly at first, then later, the words flowing like water.

Tears also flowed three weeks later. This time, they came from Lozada’s assistant at Philforest. Claiming that he went to the government TV station because it was near his office, he also cried buckets. He said that Lozada was a scoundrel and a thief. And then he wept. You could call that lachrymus crocodilius, the tears of a crocodile.

In between his crying jags, the OIC would dab the corner of his handkerchief to his eyes. I am sure, I told my friends later, that the handkerchief was daubed with Vick’s vapor rub, and touching it to this eyes stimulated the flow of tears. It’s an age-old technique found in the movies, and his crying was a parody of what Lozada did.

If this were a Lino Brocka movie, the great Cherie Gil would already be in a catfight mode, screeching the words: “You’re nothing but a second-rate, trying-hard copycat.”I cannot even remember the guy’s full name, Edwin something or other, but nobody seemed to believe his crying game.

Drilon and Lim

And yesterday, on national television, Senator Noynoy Aquino and Queen of Philippine Game Shows Kris Aquino announced in the show of Korina Sanchez that their mother, President Cory, is ill with cancer. Kris tried to control her tears. But on late-night TV, the close, male friends of Tita Cory buckled under.

The first was Mayor Fred Lim – the nemesis of drug pushers and criminals of Manila, the terminator of corruption and graft. Why, this crusading mayor even lauded the police officers who caught his son allegedly using and selling shabu two weeks ago! He congratulated the cops for “doing their duty,” and vowed a hands-off policy towards the case.

But when told that President Cory, who endorsed him for president in the 1998 elections, has colon cancer, Mayor Lim muttered: “She is a great lady . . . a great President.” And then, a film of tears covered his eyes. The film broke, and the brave and fearless Alfredo Lim wept for all the world to see.

The next was former Executive Secretary, Senate President, and Department of Labor Secretary Frank Drilon. Used to the backroom battles of politics and to endless meetings with hardened, striking laborers, Drilon also wished the former president well. She has my prayers, he added, and then he bowed down, because slivers of tears began to glisten in his face.

Vulnerable and human

The phenomenon of men crying is not a new thing, of course. But it’s a new thing when done by men who are in politics, or governance. The mold of the political warrior is that of the stern taskmaster, the great helmsman. The eyes are fierce, the lips shut tight, the jaws set. The focus is on the next battle to be won, the next vision to be enfleshed, the coming elections to be won.

But I welcome the sight of men in power crying. It gives them a halo of humanity, an aura of vulnerability. It’s not a chink in the armor, but the glisten in the armor. But, of course, the tears should be real -- the emotions starting from the gut, running riot in the heart, water free-falling from the eyes.

Because the Filipinos, bless them, are not stupid. We can sniff the real from the fake. We have a name for the fake ones – SBM, or style mo bulok. We will see more of these fake emotions, in what Pete Lacaba has memorably phrased as “our days of disquiet, our nights of rage.”

In fact, kaya nga sinasabing sumikat ang Marimar ngayon ay dahil lamang sa goodwill na naiwan ng orihinal na Marimar na inilabas noon ng Channel 9.

Ang orihinal na Marimar noon ay inedit pa at isinalin sa film para mailabas sa mga sinehan. Kumita pa rin iyon sa sine. Inilabas din naman sa video.

Kaya nga kung ang batayan ngayon ay aang sinasabi lamang nilang ratings sa Metro Manila, hindi mo masasabing naka-break na nga ng record si Marimar.

Hindi mo nga lang masabing documented iyan, dahil noong araw ang resulta ng mga tv survey ay confidential. Hindi iyan inilalabas sa publiko.

Kung ang pagbabata-yan ay recall at ang impact ng Marimar noong araw, aba, eh, kung natatandaan ninyo ilang ulit pang nag-concert dito sa bansa si Thalia at hit ang mga ito.

March being Women’s Month all over the world, Funfare lists down some of the powerful women of showbiz, starting with Charo Santos-Concio and Wilma Galvante. Charo is the newly appointed president of ABS-CBN, while Wilma is the vice president of GMA 7, whose soaps rule the primetime slot. Both Charo and Wilma started from the ranks, inching their way to the top through dint of determination, hard work and, of course, creative and management ability.

Charo also excels on cam, the host of the long-running and toprating drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya, the best on the small screen. She used to appear in movies, winning Asia’s Best Actress award in the Mike de Leon classic Itim. Charo also produced movies for Bancom, Regal, ECP and her very own production, Vision, which she started with Simon Ongpin. A graduate of St. Paul’s College (now University), Charo was a beauty queen: Baron Travel Girl, Miss Green Revolution, Manila’s Five Prettiest — not to mention Miss Mindoro.

Her “territory” as ABS-CBN president includes sister company Star Cinema, where she’s ably assisted by younger sister Malou Santos.

Star Cinema resident directors include Olive Lamasan, Rory Quintos, Cathy Garcia-Molina, Joyce Bernal, Marilou Diaz Abaya (recovering from cancer) and Laurice Guillen.

Over at GMA, the company’s film division is headed by UP and Harvard-educated lawyer Annette Gozon-Abrogar, daughter of big boss lawyer Felipe Gozon.

Wednesday, March 26, 2008 Magkasama noong Holy Week ang mag-syotang actor at actress na inakala nating nag-break na after dumaan sa malaking gulo ang kanilang relasyon. Sa Agirangan Island na nasa Caramoan Group of Islands sa may Naga sa Bicol sila nagpunta to spend time together, hindi ito pinupuntahan ng mga taga-showbiz at pu*wede sana silang rumampa.

Malas lang ang dalawa’t kasalukuyang may shoot ng Survivor Star-Studded Edition noong Maundy Thursday at Good Friday, kaya hindi sila pinapasok sa Gota beach, kung saan ginagawa ang shoot.

Nagkulong na lang sa hotel na kanilang tinuluyan ang dalawa, pero ganu’n pa man, nala*man din ang kanilang presence sa nabang*git na lugar. Ilang araw din silang magkasama at hindi na kami maniniwalang friendly outing lang ang kanilang ginawa, gaya nang laging ina-alibi ng actress ‘pag natatanong everytime nagdi-date sila ng actor.

Kaya pala kahit sabi’y break na sila, puro positive pa rin ang sinasabi ng actress patungkol sa actor. Mabait daw ito, kind, nice at mahal ang pamilya na isa sa mga katangiang kanyang na*gus*tuhan. Kung nag-break man sila, obviously, nagkabalikan din.

Wednesday, March 26, 2008 Kalat ang lungkot ng buong bayan nang maglabas ng opisyal na medical bulletin ng dating Pangulong Cory Aquino ang kanyang pamilya. Kumpirmadong may colon cancer ang dating pangulo, panalangin ang hinihingi ng kanyang pamilya na sana’y mapaglabanan niya nang maayos ang kanyang sakit, at hindi naman nagdamot ang bayan sa kanilang hinihingi.

Colon cancer din ang dahilan ng pagkamatay ni Rio Diaz, lahat na ng paraan para maligtasan nito ang kanyang sakit ay ginawa ng kanyang asawa, pero totoo nga na kapag panahon na para tayo mamaalam ay wala na tayong magagawa pa.

Walang nagawa ang milyones ng asawa ni Rio Diaz, walang nagawa ang mga ospital na sikat sa buong mundo para madugtungan pa ang kanyang buhay, pero namaalam si Rio Diaz nang maluwalhati dahil nagawa nitong kapaki-pakinabang ang mga huling araw nito sa mundo.

Mahal ng bayan si Tita Cory. Maraming nagmamahal sa kanilang pamilya. Kung isang taon na lang ang natitira sa kanyang buhay ay magiging maraming taon pa yun dahil sa sama-samang sinserong panalangin ng buong bayan para sa kanya.

Nitong mga huling buwan ay kapansin-pansin ang parang biglang pagkakaedad ni Tita Cory, bumagsak din ang kanyang katawan, nung mga panahong yun pala ay meron na siyang dinaram*dam.

Pero malapit sa Diyos si Tita Cory. Madasalin siya at matindi ang kanyang pananampalataya. Kalat ang milagro kahit saan, kahit mga pasyenteng tinatanggihan na ng mga doktor kapag pinag*milagruhan ay parang nagdahilan lang, harinawang ganun ang maganap kay dating Pangulong Cory Aquino.

Ngayon pa lang ay meron nang minamanok ang mga kasama namin sa bahay, ang pinagkaitan ng pandinig na si Priscilla ang nangunguna sa kanilang listahan, sympathy vote ang tawag dun.

Minamanok din nila ang Atenistang si Robi Domingo, guwapo raw ang bagets at mukhang natural kumilos, pero personal naman naming gusto si Beauty na mukhang komedyana ang atake.

Gusto rin siyempre namin si Priscilla, makaaasa ng boto mula sa amin ang dalagang ito na tanging pinagpapakitaan ng bibig ni Big Brother, dahil kung hindi ay magiging blangko ang kanyang mundo.

Kapag tinititigan namin si Priscilla ay naiiyak kami. Inosente kasi ang kanyang mga tingin, parang lagi siyang naghahanap ng sagot, parang nanghihingi siya ng saklay sa atin sa kanyang pakikipaglaban.

Naaliw lang kami nung tinawag ni Big Brother si Beauty para maging interpreter ni Priscilla, kikay na kikay ang dating sa amin ng dalaga mula sa Dumaguete, nakita naming napapangiti si Priscilla sa kanyang kakikayan kaya nakitawa na rin kami.

Sina Toni Gonzaga, Mariel Rodriguez, Bianca Gonzalez at Luis Manzano ang hosts ng PBB Teen Edition Plus. In fairness kay Bianca, maganda ang suot niya nung gabing yun, hindi siya nagpahuli ng itsura kina Toni at Mariel.

Napanood din yun ng isang kaibigan naming designer at ang sabi nito’y maganda ang disenyo ng damit ni Bianca, “If you have something to show, flaunt it. Kung wala naman, keep it. Ang kailangan ni Bianca, long dresses, yung hindi nakikita ang legs niya.

“If you notice, hindi siya magandang magdala ng maiig*sing damit dahil hindi magandang tingnan ang hita at legs niya, masyadong malaki, yun ang kaila*ngang itago niya,” sabi ng aming kaibigan.

Pero hindi baduy si Bianca nung Linggo nang gabi, nakipagsabayan siya kina Mariel at Toni, yun nga lang, kailangan daw itago ang malalaki niyang legs, sabi ng kaibigan naming designer na tumutok din sa kanya.

WE have a feeling na nagkaayos na rin talaga sina Maja Salvador at ang itinuturing pa rin niyang manager na si Chit Ramos. Kahit very open si Manay Chit na ang Banana Peel sandals and merchandising na ini-endorse ni Maja ay commitment lang niya noon pa kaya ‘di niya puwedeng talikdan, kaya idinidiin niyang hindi pa talaga sila nagkakasundo ng kanyang talent na si Maja.

Sabi kasi ni Maja, hindi siya bibitaw kay Manay Chit at ang gusto niya, ito pa rin ang mag-manage sa kanya. But, when the time comes na talagang ayaw na ni Manay Chit sa kanya at wala na siyang choice, doon na lang siya magde-decide na humanap ng ibang manager.

WALANG dudang sikat na si Maja Salvador dahil pinagkaguluhan siya nang dumating sa Trinoma kamakailan para sa launching bilang endorser ng Banana Peel.

Nagpaunlak din ang bagets star na magpakuha ng litrato sa fans habang nasa loob ng Banana Peel store at nagkaroon din ng autograph signing.

Sabi ni Maja, gusto niyang makasama sa pelikula ang mas matatandang aktor tulad nina Piolo Pascual, Dennis Trillo at John Lloyd Cruz kesa sa bagets stars na ipinapareha sa kanya ng Star Cinema.

“Mas maganda kasi ’pag mas matanda sa akin ang kapareha ko sa pelikula. Matuturuan at maaalalayan nila ako sa mga eksena. Mahahasa pa ang acting ko unlike ’pag kasing-edad ko lang. Feeling ko, ako ang nagdadala sa kanila,” pahayag ni Maja.

“Hindi naman sa ayaw kong makasama ang mga kapuwa ko bagets, hindi ko rin naman crush sina Piolo, Dennis at John Lloyd. Gusto ko lang talagang mahasa pa ang acting ko at makakuha ng pointers ’pag nasa harap ng camera. Iba kasi ’pag bihasa na sa acting ang kaharap mo, eh, kahit paano’y madadala ka,” paliwanag pa ng young actress.

Masaya si Maja dahil sa pangangalaga na muling ibinibigay sa kanya ng manager na si Chit Ramos.

Thankful din siya sa mga may-ari ng Banana Peel na sina Paul at Nikki Ng.

Pinayuhan siya ng mga ito na huwag munang makikipag-boyfriend at sa halip ay mag-concentrate sa projects na ipinagkakatiwala sa kanya.

March being Women’s Month all over the world, Funfare lists down some of the powerful women of showbiz, starting with Charo Santos-Concio and Wilma Galvante. Charo is the newly appointed president of ABS-CBN, while Wilma is the vice president of GMA 7, whose soaps rule the primetime slot. Both Charo and Wilma started from the ranks, inching their way to the top through dint of determination, hard work and, of course, creative and management ability.

Charo also excels on cam, the host of the long-running and toprating drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya, the best on the small screen. She used to appear in movies, winning Asia’s Best Actress award in the Mike de Leon classic Itim. Charo also produced movies for Bancom, Regal, ECP and her very own production, Vision, which she started with Simon Ongpin. A graduate of St. Paul’s College (now University), Charo was a beauty queen: Baron Travel Girl, Miss Green Revolution, Manila’s Five Prettiest — not to mention Miss Mindoro.

Her “territory” as ABS-CBN president includes sister company Star Cinema, where she’s ably assisted by younger sister Malou Santos.

Star Cinema resident directors include Olive Lamasan, Rory Quintos, Cathy Garcia-Molina, Joyce Bernal, Marilou Diaz Abaya (recovering from cancer) and Laurice Guillen.

Over at GMA, the company’s film division is headed by UP and Harvard-educated lawyer Annette Gozon-Abrogar, daughter of big boss lawyer Felipe Gozon.

Sa unang Sabado, mapapanood ang Binibini, comedy ito at kasama niya rito sina Ai-Ai de las Alas at Jake Cuenca, sa direksyon ni Wenn Deramas.

Susundan ito ng light romance episode na Boss with Luis Manzano and Albert Martinez sa direksyon ni Andoy Ranay.

Wala pang title ang episode nila ni Makisig Morales to be directed by Jerry Sineneng, pati ang last episode na isang musical at pagtatambalan nila ni Vhong Navarro sa direksyon ni Johnny Manahan.

Richard getting more serious with KC

LOOKS like Richard Gutierrez is getting more and more serious in getting closer to KC Concepcion’s heart. No less than his Ate Ruffa Gutierrez revealed that he sends Sharon Cuneta’s daughter flowers (and sometimes, chocolates) everyday, even during the time he was in the States to get an award at Kodak Theatre.

It could be that some beautiful music is already being played by the two without our knowing it, as it’s obvious from their actuations that they light up whenever they’re asked about each other.

Both of them blush unabashedly when the other one is mentioned and, as they say, action speaks louder than words.

As of now, KC is busy taping episodes for her own drama anthology. This is tentatively titled “I am KC”. No less than its director, Wenn Deramas, revealed to us at the presscon of “Ikaw Pa Rin, Bongga Ka Boy”, that this will be like ABS-CBN’s old program, “Star Drama Presents”. KC will star in different stories each week and with different leading men.

The question now is: Will her movie with Richard Gutierrez push through? No doubt that theirs will be a perfect combination, but your guess is as good as ours. All we can say is that Richard is one of the nicest and most well bred guys we met in showbiz and KC will have the ideal leading man in him.
