Talk of the town this week is Angel Locsin's dramatic transformation as a werewolf in the primetime thriller "Lobo".

Holy Monday night, Angel went through convulsions inside a church, levitated, her hair turning white as she turned into a white wolf. It was an unforgettable scene for the actress who has effectively combined beauty, sensuality and physical strength for the role of Lyka, the designer who is still unaware of her werewolf lineage. The drama that will ensue after this revelation will further test Angel 's dramatic mettle. But the past few episodes of 'Lobo" have already vindicated her as an actress who can go beyond portraying one dimensional komiks characters like "Darna".

In a previous interview, the 22-year-old star said she is continually learning new things on the set. "Dapat hindi complacent. Dapat andun pa rin yung hunger to improve your craft, pag nawala na yon, kasiraan mo na." She is also thrilled that her world has expanded. She felt that especially in the recent Philippine fiesta in Dubai where she and Piolo Pascual were welcomed like royalty by OFWs and their families.

Angel also appears to blend well the demands of her TV series, commercial endorsements and overall career with her lovelife.

What drives her too these days is current boyfriend Luis Manzano. It's supposedly a hush hush relationship, given the peculiarities of the biz where loveteam imaging is more important, in this case Angel's partnership with Piolo. But even Batangas Governor Vilma Santos, Luis' mom, acknowledges the couple's romance. " I just want my son to be happy," she said. Ate Vi also confirmed that she gave Angel a handkerchief as a new year present. It's a peculiar gift since the star for all seasons is known for her distinct use of hankies in all her showbiz and political events to keep her poise and bearing. Must be Vi's way of telling Angel to be like her?

Also holding her own in "Lobo" is the werewolf matriarch Pilar Pilapil. Her acting is so strong; in fact, she seems to be performing in the wide silver screen, not in the boob tube. That's pretty consistent for the multi best actress awardee who is best remembered for her performances in "Napakasakit Kuya Eddie ", "Ang Uliran", among others.

It was only a few years ago when Pilar made big news with the publication of her autobiography, detailing her colorful career and love life, including her affairs with Dolphy and an eminent politician. That book was punctuated by the confessional details of her conversion as a renewed Christian and her marriage to a younger pastor. Not much was heard from Pilar until "Lobo". To say the least, this is a worthy comeback for a seasoned actress.

The internet posted TV Patrol World news report also drew thousands of split reactions and comments on Ruffa's call on Janina to redeem herself and prove her detractors wrong. Ruffa spoke as a 1993 representative to the pageant where she was proclaimed Miss World Second Princess... And while still on youtube, check out the buzz created by a Spanish ad featuring the new metro in Madrid, Spain's renewed mode of transportation. The disparity between the ratings of ABS-CBN in cable and non-cable households is a "non-issue" according to an ABS-CBN Broadcasting Network official.

Vivian Tin, ABS-CBN Research and Business Analysis chief, disputed claims by network rival GMA Network, Inc. that ABS-CBN is using its cable TV resources to manipulate ratings in cable TV households to its advantage.

GMA Network earlier issued an official statement noting the disparity between its ratings in households with cable TV and those with free TV, saying that:

"There is absolutely no truth to ABS-CBN’s claim that it was the first one who initiated the move to clean up the TV ratings system. For about five (5) years now, GMA Network has been complaining to AGB Nielsen [Editor: AGB Nielsen is a media research firm that tracks TV ratings] why the ratings of GMA Network’s programs are so low in cable TV households but so high in non-cable TV homes, a situation that does not obtain in ABS-CBN’s programs."

The statement also said that since ABS-CBN either owns or has a controlling stake in the dominant cable companies in the country, it would be able to access information as to which homes are fitted with AGB Nielsen ratings meters.

Technical issue

Tin however said that there's a simple explanation for why GMA Network shows do better ratings-wise in households with free TV, while ABS-CBN has higher ratings in homes with cable TV: signal reception and bandwidth.

Tin explained that ABS-CBN airs over Channel 2, which “is the lowest of the low band channels", making its free TV signal vulnerable to "noise", meaning, electronic and physical interference.

“Kapag low band ang channel, it’s vulnerable to noise... noise that we couldn’t hear as humans but electronically the TV picks up… (the noise) will cause the TV (picture to be) blurry.”

“In the fringes where the signal is not as strong, the noise - the noise of electricity, telecommunication activities, even rain and wind - interfere with the low band frequency. There are areas where homes would have snowy reception of ABS-CBN. In these areas we will lose in terms of ratings," she said.

Tin said that since the free TV reception of Channel 2 is bad in certain areas, it's not surprising that those households would tend to switch to programs on GMA Network, since they would get clearer picture and sound quality.

She said that homes fitted with cable TV would have clear reception of ABS-CBN shows “because cable takes away the noise.”

"In an environment when the receptions of all channels are clear, our ratings tend to be higher," Tin said, adding that "in an environment that is patas (fair), because (all channels are) clear, we always win,” she said.

Tin said certain measures have been taken by ABS-CBN to improve the reception of the network in non-cable homes. For a long-term solution, Tin said ABS-CBN plans to introduce digital television.

“We have a cable company because it makes good business strategy. That’s another part of the market... hindi naman namin ginawa ang cable para gumawa ng iba (we didn’t engage in this business just to do something illegal),” she said.

Bribery and corruption

ABS-CBN has filed a P63-million civil suit against AGB Nielsen for its alleged failure to probe reports of an organized, systematic and well-funded attempt to cheat in the ratings.

ABS-CBN filed the case after an informant approached the network and confessed that he was hired to find and bribe households equipped with AGB Nielsen meters in Bacolod, in order to influence their viewing habits.

A court has dismissed the civil suit based on technicality but ABS-CBN has filed a motion for reconsideration.

“Bribery of homes to change viewing habit, that one is the real corruption issue,” said Tin.

Tin assured that once enough evidence has been gathered ABS-CBN will conduct its own investigation.

Hana Kimi Japan(GMA 7) vs Hana Kimi Taiwan (ABS-CBN)
ABS-CBN and GMA Network is at it again. This time and for the first time, both networks will be airing two shows with the same title on March 24 but two different adaptations.


GMA Network is showing the Japanese adaption whereas ABS-CBN is showing the Taiwanese adaptation. Both series has its similarities: 3 main characters, a dog, a gay doctor, a photo journalist, the effeminate classmate, 3 dorms, and the crazy adventures. So which series is better? Some say that the Japanese version is way better, funny and heartwarming than the Taiwanese version. Some say the Taiwanese version is better because the lead male actor is more good-looking than the Japanese version. Then there’s some who say that ABS-CBN is better at dubbing compared to GMA. The viewers will ultimately be the judge to that.

For many celebrities, Holy Week offers a much-needed break from the stress and chaos that come with fame.

They consider it the best time to relax and enjoy, be with friends, loved ones and family.

OFF TO BEACHES
The most-desired local holiday destination of local stars is Boracay in Aklan province, considered as one of the best beaches in the world.

Actress and television host Mariel Rodriguez said she will spend a lot of time on Boracay's unique white sand beach to relax and also do some work.

"I will be in Boracay… but there’s a church in the island so there’s no excuse for you not to hear mass or pray," Rodriguez told abs-cbnNEWS.com.



"Wowowee’s" co-host RR will also take her time to enjoy Boracay.

Young, morena beauty Bianca Gonzales will also spend Holy Week in a beach where she will enjoy the sun with friends.

"My friends and I are looking for a beach to go to," Gonzales added.

Gonzales explained stars really need a break since many of them are stressed from work.

"For a lot of people in the industry, there’s really no holiday except Holy Week, so it's really a time to relax and reflect and take time for yourself," she said.

Sexy actress and comedienne Kitkat said she will also go to the beach with her family.

"Thursday, I’m going to the beach with my family. They say that during Holy Week, you should not be going out but it’s just one day with my whole family, a perfect time to bond with them," she said.

However, Kitkat said she also believes that the message of Holy Week is to reflect and confess.

"Try to recall if you committed a sin, and if you do, pray and ask for forgiveness," she said.

BEING WITH FAMILY
Stars like Valerie Concepcion use the break to recharge spiritually and be with her family.

"I will be in Tarlac with my family since that is our tradition every Holy Week, to stay together," Concepcion told abs-cbnNews.com.

Her family also follows the common way of commemorating Lent.

"Very traditional. We do hear mass, but we don’t attend procession," she said.

"Holy Week is the time to reflect and then take the right direction," Concepcion said. "It’s also a time to actually go back to God’s embrace. I always believe that he is there for me."

Comedian actor Empoy will stay in Baliuag, Bulacan with his family to reflect and take time to praise the Lord.

"I will be in Baliuag, Bulacan. It’s good a place, especially during Holy Week because of the processions, contrition march and the images of saints," he said.

Animal lover and television host Kim Atienza is off to Boracay with his family.

"I have a little hotel in Boracay. It's a family business. So I’m bringing my kids there to the hotel," he said.

Atienza said Lent is an opportunity to recharge the spirit. "We thank God for all the blessings that he has given us. It's also time for healing of relationships and bonding with the people we love."

PRAY AND DON'T SIN

For child star Makisig Morales, who plays a character in ABS-CBN's "Super Inggo, Holy Week means a vacation with his family, plus a time to remember the suffering of the Lord through masses and prayers.

"Kailangan po inaalala ang paghihirap ni Lord. Tapos po, lagi pong magpi-pray, tapos lagi din pong magsisimba," he said.

Makisig encouraged other children to always pray and not to commit sins.

"Mag-pray po sila na sana ay mawala na ang mga kasalanan nila. Ako din po ay magpi-pray din po ako na sana ay mawala na ang kasalanan ko saka po sana ay sundin na nila ang mga magulang nila."

WORK FOR VHONG

But not all stars will be on vacation.

Actor-comedian Vhong Navarro will be in Manila to promote his latest film, "Supahpapalicious," produced by Star Cinema.

" Ipapalabas ang pelikula so magpo-promote. Baka dito muna ako," he told abs-cbnNEWS.com

He agreed that Holy week is also a good time to be with one's family.

"Siyempre, ito iyong time para siguro magdasal tayo, magpasalamat tayo sa Panginoon dahil alam natin na ito ang time na naghi-hirap siya," he said. "And then, siguro, ito iyong time din para makasama ang buong pamilya mo dahil ito iyong panahon na lahat e walang trabaho."

Claudine, Aide Trade Charges

AFTER filing charges of theft against her former aide, Claudine Barretto now finds herself on the receiving end.

Nancy Jiji Cruz, Claudine’s former personal assistant, charged the actress with libel and perjury. She said Claudine was lying in her complaint-affidavit for qualified theft, which Claudine filed against her last January.

In a separate complaint-affidavit, Cruz also charged Claudine with violation of the Social Security Act of 1997, claiming that the actress allegedly failed to report her employment and services for coverage with Social Security System (SSS) after she was hired as a personal assistant and domestic helper in March 2001.

On Dec. 30 Claudine filed theft charges against Cruz, claiming that the latter stole P27,000 in cash, three sacks of Folded & Hung apparel, including shirts; a boxful of Secosana bags and wallets, Randy Ortiz gowns, south sea pearl earrings, which allegedly cost P500,000, and insurance papers.

Cruz denied the allegations, saying it was highly improbable and physically impossible for her to carry and bring out three sacks of clothes and shirts by herself, even with the assistance of her three-year-old kid.

She maintained that Claudine knew that there were no stolen or missing items in her house at Loyola Grand Villas in Quezon City, and that no witness to the alleged theft was positively declared.

Cruz said she sought permission from Claudine to leave on the morning of Dec. 26, bringing only paper bags containing Christmas gifts. She added that the security guards of the village inspected her things before she was allowed to leave the compound.

ITINANGGI na ni Sam Milby ang tsismis na may anak siya sa pagka-binata. Ayon sa Fil-Am actor, maging siya’y walang kaide-ideya kung saan nanggaling ang balitang ’yun.


Pero dahil sanay na nga siya sa showbiz, tinatawanan na lang niya ito’t alam daw niyang parte lang ng pagiging artista niya ang mga ganitong intriga.

After all, mas grabe pa nga ’yung tsismis sa kanila ni Piolo Pascual, pero nalampasan niya.

Inamin din ng aktor na tinanong siya ng lady love na si Anne Curtis tungkol sa tsismis.

“If ever there came a time na I do have a kid, I’ll definitely let her know. I do love her,” sabi pa ni Sam, na very open na talaga sa panliligaw niya kay Anne.

May tsismis ding nagkaroon ng relasyon si Sam kay Marianna del Rio, ang Brazilian model na na-link kay Cesar Montano, at ayon sa actor, wala itong katotohanan.

Pero inamin naman ni Sam na last year pa niya nakilala si Marianna sa ASAP, pero hindi sila nagkaroon ng romantic involvement kung ’di friendship lang.

Kasalukuyang napapanood si Sam sa Maging Sino Ka Man at ipinipetisyon ng kanyang mga tagahanga na maging leading man sa Betty La Fea remake, dahil bagay daw sa aktor ang role na Armando, ang love interest ni Betty.

Holy Week not just about Christ's death: Pinoy Musicians

For many Filpino musicians, Holy Week has a deeper meaning other than honoring the death of Jesus Christ.

For veteran singer Claire de la Fuente, it's also the best time to remember Christ's sacrifices for mankind.

"The message is how the Lord loves so much that he was able to give up his son just to show to everybody how much he loves mankind," she said. "So we need to appreciate that the Lord was crucified and died on the cross, we have to see his sacrifices just for us.



"I think the message here is to love the blessings the Lord gave us, and that we should learn to sacrifice ourselves also," de la Fuente told abs-cbnNews.com.

De la Fuente is currently involved with her recording project with America’s pop music icon, Richard Carpenter of The Carpenters.

FAMILY BONDING
For Arnel Pineda, the newest vocalist of the American rock band "Journey", Holy Week offers an opportunity to love one's family and thus show one's love of the Lord.

"I will be with my family, definitely. I will go out of town with them," Pineda told abs-cbnNews.com.

The other message of Holy Week other than loving one's family, he said, is to venerate God’s sufferings.

"I hope we remember the meaning of the suffering of the good Lord for mankind and the importance of this to all persons we love and also to our enemies," Pineda explained.

"You see I’m not a very religious person; I’m just spiritual. I don’t go to church and yes, I’m a Christian," he said. "But I'm very spiritual and I believe in God."

THE COMPANY

For one of the country’s premiere ensembles, "The Company", exalting Holy Week comes in various ways.

The group leader and founder, Moy Ortiz, told abs-cbnNews.com that aside from praying, he may also be doing Visita Iglesia (Visit of Churches), a tradition Catholics observe during Lent.

Other members like Annie Quintos and Cecile Bautista will also do Visita Iglesia. They will also again watch the classic film for the Holy Week, "The 10 Commandments".

Another "The Company" member, Jay Marquez, will join a clan reunion in the province of Anilao, while Sweet Plantado will perform Cantata.



"Basically Holy Week is the time when you reflect on the sacrifices of God," Plantado replied when asked what Lent meant for her.

Serbian tennis star invests in dream house

INDIAN WELLS, California (AFP) - Shopping sprees are a perk of tennis stardom for Jelena Jankovic, but the 23-year-old Serbian isn't confining her spending to trinkets.

"I think it's worth it to buy, for example, houses or some type of properties where you're always going to have that money. When you buy shoes or bags, who you going to sell that to?" said Jankovic, who booked a semi-final spot in the 5.7 million-dollar WTA and ATP Pacific Life Open on Thursday.

The world number four owns a house in Miami, and is building a house in the same upscale neighborhood north of San Diego that golfer Phil Mickelson calls home.

"It's beautiful. It's on a hill and just amazing," she said of the property. "It will take maybe a year and a half or two years to build a whole house because it will be big."

Jankovic admitted that her description was based only on what she had been told, because she hadn't yet been to the site.

"I haven't even seen the lot, but I hear all these stories," she said. "It's amazing. It's all this, and it's like a fairytale to me to listen to it. So when I have time I will go and check it out."

She has seen the architect's plans for the house, which she calls "amazing."
While she's waiting for her dream home to be completed, Jankovic whiled away some time shopping for more frivolous items.

"I'm a big spender," she said. "I like to swipe my card. I just like doing it, you know, that motion."

Her latest big-ticket item was actually a gift from her father - a limited edition Louis Vuitton bag with a 4,000-dollar price tag.

"My dad is better for that," she said. "He wouldn't think twice. He thinks 'Oh, it's for my daughter.' He just tries to make us happy."

Jankovic said she would leave the shopping for home furnishings to her mother.

"My mom, she loves going to those shops, and she drives me nuts. I hate that.
"She's really the expert, and she'll do all the job. She has a really good time because she was a designer before when she was younger, so she has good taste for that."

Balik-teleserye ang aktres na si Claudine Barretto pagkatapos niyang isilang ang anak nila ni Raymart Santiago na si Santino. Si Claudine ang bida sa horror series na Maligno, kung saan gagampanan niya ang papel na una nang ginawa ng Queen of Philippine Movies na si Ms. Susan Roces. Makakatambal dito ni Claudine si Diether Ocampo.

Happy si Claudine na muli siyang umaarte sa harap ng kamera.



"Feeling ko, ang tagal-tagal kong nawala. This is my work. This is my life. Masaya ako na mayroon ulit akong show na alam kong susubaybayan ng mga tao. Iba talaga ang horror sa drama. I really say that I live up to expectations of Ms. Susan Roces," sabi ni Claudine sa panayam sa kanya ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal).



Sa pagbabalik-telebisyon ni Claudine ay suportado naman siya ng kanyang mister na si Raymart. Bilang suporta ay laging dinadala ng aktor ang dalawang anak nila ni Claudine kapag binibisita niya ito sa taping ng Maligno.



"He brought the kids along para hindi ako ma-homesick at hindi ko sila masyadong ma-miss," sambit ng nagbabalik na aktres.



Maliban sa kanyang bagong project, masaya rin si Claudine dahil sa ilan pang blessings na natanggap niya.



"On the second week of December, we got the papers, the decision from the court na Sabina [her adopted daughter] is no longer a Barretto but a Santiago already. It's the first Christmas that she is with us. And my sister [Gretchen] came home," masayang pahayag ni Claudine.



Ibinalita rin ni Claudine na tuloy-tuloy na ang lagi nilang pagkikita at pagsasama ng dating nakaalitang nakatatandang kapatid na si Gretchen.



"Kami—Gretch, Marj, ako at Gia—we had the chance to spend time together having late lunch, late meryenda, ganyan, kuwentuhan," sambit niya.



Ano naman ang naging reaction niya sa mga matitinding kontrobersiyang kinasangkutan ni Gretchen?



"Funny, kasi kung kailan lumalabas yung mga ganyang intriga, namamatay agad kasi wala namang katotohanan," sagot ni Claudine.



Ang huling proyekto ni Claudine bago siya nanganak ay Walang Kapalit, kung saan nakatambal niya si Piolo Pascual.

Tuloy na ang next movie ng Star for All Seasons na si Vilma Santos for Star Cinema.



Nakapag-usap na rin sa wakas si Vilma Santos at ang film arm ng ABS-CBN for the much-delayed Star Cinema movie na dapat ay noong 2005 pa ginawa. During the presscon of A Love Story nina Maricel Soriano, Aga Muhlach, at Angelica Panganiban kahapon, July 18, napag-alaman ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) kay Roxy Liquigan ng Star Cinema na sa November na ang start ng shooting ng movie ni Vi.



"Aayusin lang ni Governor ang trabaho niya tapos magli-leave siya. Sa position niya ngayon, puwede ang leave unlike noong mayor siya," paliwanag ni Roxy sa PEP kung paano masisimulan ang pelikula, lalo na't kakaupo nga lang ni Governor Vi.



Napag-alaman din naming close to the original concept of Flores de Mara pa rin ang pelikula na gagawin ni Vilma at ididirek ni Olivia Lamasan. Ang Flores de Mara ang dapat na comeback movie ni Vilma for Star Cinema noong 2005 and would be her follow-up naman for her last movie na Mano Po 3 ng Regal Entertainment.



Ang Flores de Mara ay kuwento ng isang ina na may mga anak na bakla. Originally, it would have starred Diether Ocampo, John Lloyd Cruz, and Joross Gamboa as her gay children.



Dahil sa dami ng revisions na ginagawa sa script, naunahan na ito ng isang pelikula ng Regal Films, ang Manay Po, na almost the same ang kuwento—about a mother (Cherry Pie Picache) with three gay children (Polo Ravales, John Prats, and Jiro Manio). Ang Manay Po naman ay isang original concept ng director of the movie na si Joel Lamangan noong 2003 pa and its original title was Oring, Orang, Oroses.



Dahil na rin sa kaabalahan ni Vilma, who was then on her last term as mayor of Lipa City at pati na rin sa pagkakapareho ng concept ng Flores de Mara at Manay Po, na-shelve ang Flores.



Kuwento ni Roxy sa PEP, parang ganito pa rin ang magiging tema ng comeback movie ni Vilma Santos. Tungkol pa rin ito sa isang ina na may anak na bakla. This time, isa na lang daw sa tatlo ang magiging bakla at pasok pa rin si John Lloyd bilang isa sa mga anak niya. Iba na ang magiging casting for the roles na para kina Diether at Joross sana.

Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos is clear about the issue: she has not signed a deal to do an indie movie to be directed by Raya Martin, and she has a commitment to do a movie under Star Cinema. A broadsheet (not The Daily Tribune) announced that Gov. Vi will shoot Independencia sometime in September this year, having received a 120,000-euro (P7 million) subsidy from the French government. Line producer Arleen Cuevas told the broadsheet that Gov. Vi liked the project about a mother and son who flee to the mountains during the American occupation. She enticed her by promising 10 shooting days in a studio. She said that Gov. Vi promised to fix her schedule. There must have been a sincere desire on the part of Gov. Vi to want to do the movie, but her priority now is her work as Batangas governor. Her priority as far as making a movie is concerned is with Star Cinema. To date, she has committed to do the movie with John Lloyd Cruz in the role as her gay son’s lover. The movie’s shoot in New York City, however, has been postponed as she still has to get the go-ahead from her constituents.

NETWORK EDGE – It goes without saying that Star Cinema and GMA Films have big edge over other producers because of their radio-television network clout. TV rules the entertainment world and for a movie to make it big TV exposure, which is very expensive, is a must.

Star Cinema (ABS-CBN is a sister company) and GMA Films can have all the movie trailers they want without cast outlay. The rest have to dig deep into their pockets for TV exposure, as much as R300,000 per 30-second spot on primetime.

No wonder then that Regal Films has tie-up with GMA. The Valentine offering "My Bestfriend’s Girlfriend" is a joint Regal-GMA venture. Ditto the upcoming "My Monster Mom," which marks the "acting comeback" of Annabelle Rama in the title role, with daughter Ruffa Gutierrez as co-star.

Viva also partnered with Star Cinema and GMA Films in a several movies.

DREAM PROJECT – Highspeed’s item on the pairing of Nora Aunor and Vilma Santos in ‘Larawan’ (as suggested by Bro. Nes Cuartero) elicited feedback from readers in and out of showbiz. The consensus is it’s a dream project, a casting coup, especially if Piolo Pascual is cast as Tony Javier, the heel in ‘Larawan’ who seduced Paula, the younger sister of Candida. Yes. Piolo’s the perfect Tony and Nora and Vilma are the ideal Candida and Paula, respectively.

Nora and Vilma have co-starred in four films, one each for Sampaguita, TIIP, one for Danny Zialcita (‘T-Bird at Ako’), and one for Ismael Bernal’s ‘Ikaw ay Akin’ (also produced by TIIP).

As earlier noted by Highspeed, Star Cinema may well produce ‘Larawan,’ a fitting finale to the illustrious careers of Superstar Nora Aunor and Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos.

SHARON AND MARICEL? – After Nora and Vilma, who else can topbill ‘Larawan,’ adapted from Nick Joaquin’s ‘Portrait of an Artist as Filipino’?

Sharon Cuneta and Maricel Soriano come to mind. But then they might be too young to play spinster sisters Candida and Paula, respectively. They are only in their early 40s.

Puede pa rin, with some changes in script here and there. The role of Tony Javier would have to be played by a younger man. Highspeed can only think of John Lloyd Cruz.

And who can produce the first team-up of the Megastar and the Diamond Star? Again, Star Cinema comes to mind. Sharon and Maricel are Star Cinema artists. And ABS-CBN, too.

Come to think of it, Sharon and Maricel will make a blockbuster combination in any movie, not necessarily ‘Larawan.’
