The lawyer of Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao on Wednesday said Pacquiao's fight against Mexican Jorge Solis will push through next month despite a petition from Golden Boy Promotions to stop the fight.

"There are no fears of the fight being cancelled. We are expecting the case to be solved before [the April fight]," lawyer Franklin Gacal told ABS-CBN News Channel.

Gacal said that a Los Angeles court is expected to issue next week an injunction on the pleading filed by Golden Boy Promotions against Top Rank, the official promoter of Pacquiao's fights.

Golden Boy Promotions, which is owned by Mexican legend Oscar de la Hoya, asked the court for unspecified damages and a court order preventing Bob Arum's Top Rank from promoting Pacquiao's fights.

Pacquiao earlier sued Golden Boy Promotions and claimed that he signed a seven-fight contract with de la Hoya in mid-September “under duress.”

Gacal said if the court fails to rule on the petition, then the fight's proceeds would be frozen.

"The worst scenario is that the proceeds of the fight will be set aside and will be given to Golden Boy, if ever Top Rank loses the case. But definitely the fight will go on as scheduled," he said.

Pacquiao and the undefeated Mexican slugger will lock horns on April 14 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

On May 5 ay airing na ng bagong yugto ng Komiks na may titulong Si Pedro Penduko at ang mga Engkanto at hindi lang si Matt ang may powers dahil ka-join na niya ang limang super heroes na sina Oyo Boy Sotto na may power na telekinesis at multiplicity, si Maja Salvador ay invisibility at ability to shrink, si Makisig Morales naman ay fire starter at kontrolado rin niya ito, si Denise Laurel ay nakakalipad at gumagapang sa matataas na gusali tulad nina Spiderman at Batman, at si Aaron Villaflor ay kontrolado naman niya ang tubig.

Now a regular of the ABS-CBN singing-star search show Little Big Superstar, katatapos lang din ni Angelika ng kaniyang workshop. Papasok din kasi siya sa Pedro Penduko now on its third season.



Hindi na matutuloy ang dapat sana'y sarili niyang Komiks episode with Vhong Navarro, ang Lastikman. Consequently, hindi na rin natuloy ang isa pa sanang Komiks episode ni Vhong, ang Buhawi Jack. Successful kasi ang Da Adventures of Pedro Penduko ni Matt Evans kung kaya't dagdag nang dagdag ang season nito with new big stars added for every adventure.

Hindi na rin matutuloy ang dapat na primetime soap opera ni Angelika dahil malamang daw na ang next project niya ay sa Sine Serye. Sinimulan ng ABS-CBN ang pre-primetime umbrella project na Sine Serye with Palimos ng Pag-ibig na pinagbibidahan nina Diether Ocampo, Kristine Hermosa, at Rica Peralejo. Susundan ito ng Hiram Na Mukha starring Heart Evangelista and Geoff Eigenmann. Ang magiging ikatlong project ay ang kay Angelika na.

Hindi pa lang alam if it will be a Vilma Santos movie or a Maricel Soriano one—coincidentally, parehong may "langit" ang title. Kung ang Vilma movie ang gagawin niya, it would be the remake of Kapag Langit ang Humatol. Kung ang kay Marya naman, it would be the remake of Kaya Kong Abutin ang Langit.

Angelika's Sine Serye project is also the reason kung bakit hindi na niya natanggap ang Lastikman episode ng Komiks dahil magsasapawan ang dalawa. Ang ending, ipinasok na lang din siya sa currently being aired Pedro Penduko.

'ABS-CBN not linked to party-list groups'


ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation on Monday said that it is not connected in any way with certain party-list groups participating in the May 14 midterm elections.

Bong Osorio, ABS-CBN head for corporate communications, said that the network is not involved or associated with advocacies and or causes of the patry-list groups that bear the same acronym as the company, its platforms and programs.

The company statement came in the wake of reports that party-list groups Bagong Bayan na Nagtataguyod ng Demokrationg Ideolohiya at Layunin (BANDILA), Alliance of Neo-Conservatives (ANC) and Alyansa ng mga Batayang Sektor (ABS) are using acronyms that bear similarity to the network.

ANC is the networks' 24-hour cable news channel. "Bandila," meanwhile, is its late night newscast.

According to the "Bagong Botante" Web site of the Commission on Elections, as of Feb. 26, 2007, the party-list group ANC and another group using the ABS acronym, the Arts, Business and Science Professionals, are registered with COMELEC.

Osorio said that regular, project-based and contractual employees of the network and its platforms should resign if they intende to pursue a political career.

He, however, did not say if the party-list groups' use of the acronyms ANC, ABS and BANDILA is illegal. Instead, he said that it is a form of flattery for the network.

"A week ago, GMA 7 published the 20 highest rating TV shows for 2006. It showed Pinoy Pop Superstar as the top-rater of all local talent searches. That means Philippine Idol and Pinoy Dream Academy are non-raters.

"What about record sales? Who’s the big winner among the CDs of Pinoy Pop Superstar (Gerald Santos and company), Philippine Idol and Pinoy Dream Academy?"

Thanks for writing Raymund about topics that I’m sure a lot of people are also wondering about. How reliable are the ratings? I do not think anybody really knows. A lot of factors are taken into consideration during surveys and lay people like us are not informed of those. Maybe Pinoy Pop Superstar was indeed the top-rater.

From my point of view, I can say that it was. This is because Philippine Idol turned out to be a big dud because the interesting entries were booted out early in the competition and Pinoy Dream Academy started picking up big late in 2006.

As for record sales, nobody also really knows for sure which one among those albums are the top sellers. This is true not only among the talent shows’ albums but for all music releases. We will only get the truth when we get Soundscan out here.

But if I were to consider airplay and market feedback, I would say Pinoy Dream Academy has the edge because of Yeng Constantino’s Hawak Kamay and we have not heard anything about what hits were produced by the others.

I honestly believe that viewers have started to lose interest in talent shows. Maybe this is not really the fault of the networks. Trends change and the band explosion certainly affected the rise of aspiring solo talents. Besides, the talent searches have not really discovered anybody of true star material these past few years.

Relatively speaking Yeng Constantino seems to be the most successful, but should we now consider her a star? I will answer that after she comes up with a second or better yet a third hit song.

Will At Home Ka Dito Reformat Now that JoRox left the show?


Nag-last taping day na bilang hosts ng At Home Ka Dito sina Joross Gamboa at Roxanne Guinoo noong nakaraang Tuesday, March 20. Ito ang inamin ni Joross mismo during the press con of Rounin.

Ayon kay Joross, two years din daw sila ni Roxanne sa At Home Ka Dito. Para sa young actor, walang dahilan para malungkot pa siya ngayong kailangan na niyang mag-goodbye sa nasabing ABS-CBN Sunday morning show ni Charlene Gonzalez.

"Ang sa akin kasi, lahat naman dito sa showbiz, may ending. Kumbaga, noong ginawa namin yung At Home, dapat for six months lang kami, pero tumagal ng two years. So, sobra-sobrang extension na nga," sabi ni Joross.

GMA 7’s 28-year-old noontime show Eat, Bulaga! will undergo a major reformatting anytime now. Good for its followers both here and abroad (reached by Pinoy TV) who have stuck to the show through almost three decades, through its changes in hosts, through its ups and downs, through its constant "reinventions."

Now, the bad news: Heads will inevitably roll in the process of reformatting, but the Funfare DPA didn’t reveal who the "casualties" will be. "There are just too many hosts," said the DPA.

The DPA added that the reformatting has nothing to do with the fact that the rival noontime show, ABS-CBN’s Wowowee, sometimes overtakes Bulaga! in the ratings game.

Charo threatens to resign anew


Word got to us that ABS-CBN executive vice president Charo Santos-Concio threatened to resign again from the network early this week after a reported feud with upper management. It will be remembered that Charo also threatened to leave ABS-CBN two years ago when she had a misunderstanding with former president Cito Alejandro and chairman Gabby Lopez.

Charo’s production subordinates – including her loyalists Deo Endrinal and Enrico Santos, along with five other TV executives – vowed to go with her and resign, too, if ever she decides to leave the network.

This time around, we still do not know the actual reason that made Charo threaten to resign anew.

We heard Charo is eyeing the coveted position to become president of ABS-CBN. Up to this day, however, big boss Gabby Lopez has not appointed her to the said post.

"Things have never been better for ABS-CBN. I'd like to say that the official national ratings came out yesterday, and the results show that ABS-CBN is the leading station nationwide," announces Charo Santos-Concio, the network's executive vice-president for entertainment, earlier today.

She adds, "Things are really looking up for ABS-CBN. The programs have never been better and the revenues also are looking better."

Vivian Tin, vice-president for research and business analysis, details, "I released the ratings data to management yesterday—its data covering March 4-17, two weeks. It's now going to be a continuing source of information; so weekly we're going to have national ratings already.

"Based on March 4-17, we have a national share of 47 versus competitor's 35, so it's a very comfortable lead. The most watched show in the Philippines is Sana Maulit Muli, followed by Maging Sino Ka Man, and TV Patrol World. Those are the top three programs nationally, very comfortably ahead," Vivian adds.

The source of the nationwide ratings, Vivian says, is AGB Nielsen.

Charo ends with a message to the viewers: "Maraming maraming salamat po sa inyong suporta. Siyempre po sa kasiyahan namin, parati kayong kasama."

ABS-CBN claims victory over GMA Network in TV ratings war

Propelled by popular evening soaps, game shows, and reality TV, ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. is claiming victory in the raging ratings war, trumpeting the results of a recent national survey which saw the Lopez-led television network ahead of chief rival GMA Network, Inc.

Citing a report by AGB-Nielsen Media Research covering the period March 4 to 17, ABS-CBN said it was "comfortably ahead" of GMA in nationwide urban TV viewership, with a share of 47% against GMA’s 35%.

ABS-CBN’s total daytime rating for the period was 19%, compared with GMA’s 14%. Fifteen of the top 20 programs came from ABS-CBN, the AGB-Nielsen report showed.

Primetime drama shows Sana Maulit Muli and Maging Sino Ka Man topped the list, along with the early evening newscast TV Patrol World. The top 20 also included reality show Pinoy Big Brother and noontime game show Wowowee.

GMA programs in the top 20 were Asian Treasures (7th), Super Twins (8th), Bakekang (12th), Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho (16th), and news program 24 Oras (20th).

In a statement, Charo Santos-Concio, ABS-CBN executive vice-president, said the network was "happy to hear the great news, but will remain vigilant in nurturing the leadership."

"We will be constantly aware of the differences in the needs of Filipinos in different parts of the country and even the world to make sure that we meet all their viewing needs," Ms. Concio said.

Sought for comment, Butch S. Racquel, GMA vice-president for corporate communications, said the network never claimed leadership in all areas covered by surveys.

Citing the same AGB-Nielsen survey, Mr. Racquel said GMA continues to lead in "Mega Manila," which includes Metro Manila and neighboring provinces. From March 4 to 17, GMA posted an average total day rating of 17.3% against ABS-CBN’s 14.7%, he said.

"It is interesting to note that Mega Manila, where GMA Network leads in TV ratings, comprises 51% of the total number of TV households in urban areas in the country, based on [survey data]," Mr. Racquel said.

The whole of Luzon — including Mega Manila — accounts for 74% of the country’s total urban TV households, with the remaining 26% distributed to other areas.

For Miguel Jose T. Navarette, ABS-CBN vice-president for finance, the company is on a "financial turnaround" as a result of improved programming.

Mr. Navarette said the company’s financial results for 2006 were way better than the previous year. ABS-CBN will release its 2006 financial report in two weeks. In 2005, its net income fell by 62% to P288 million from P758 million the year earlier.

For the first time in three years, ABS-CBN said last week that it would issue a cash dividend of P0.45 per share.

ABS-CBN will also refinance an $85-million loan, through an agreement with ABN Amro Bank, N.V., BPI Capital Corp., and ING Bank N.V.

It’s not Bakekang, folks, or Asian Treasures, and neither it is Super Twins that the majority of Filipinos watch every night on television. All three shows are on GMA-7 and have been topping the charts, at least in Mega Manila.

It is the tandem of Gerald Anderson and Kim Chiu that has been keeping soap opera addicts from Aparri to Jolo glued to their sets, Monday to Friday, with 34.9 rating versus GMA’s highest rater Asian Treasures with 28.5 and landing on the seventh spot.

This surprised many movie scribes when Charo Santos Concio, head of ABS-CBN 2, announced the recent findings of a survey conducted in urban Philippines (meaning the major cities across the archipelago) by AGB-Nielsen Media Research Philippines for the period of March 4 to 17 before the start of the press conference for the network’s new soap opera Walang Kapalit with Piolo Pascual and Claudine Barretto.

The data put ABS-CBN as the leading TV station nationwide, registering an overall share of 47 percent, while its closest competitor managed to pull 35 percent. This should be cause for concern among the top guns of the broadcast network on Edsa corner Timog who vowed to dislodge ABS-CBN from being the industry leader almost five years ago.

Ironically, while Gabby Lopez has humbly conceded Mega Manila to its competitor, his foot soldiers across the archipelago have steadfastly protected the network from being totally decimated by its competitor. And they have done quite a remarkable job as evidenced by the performance of the network in the recent survey.

It is not easy to put 15 of ABS-CBN’s shows of the top 20 programs watched in the country, but with dedication of the network officers in the region who remain unfazed despite the unabated campaign of ABS-CBN’s overeager competitors to mislead the public in believing that they have overtaken the lead in the provinces, the network pulled it off to remain the country’s no. 1 television network.

As I have said before, the dynamics of the television audience has become unpredictable. What might be working in one urban setting will not necessarily work in another. And there is also the paradigm shift that seems to be getting more frequent than in previous years.

Drama versus fantasy

The figures are very telling of a trend in viewing tastes nationwide. While Metro Manila viewers are partial to shows that are heavy on special visual effects, conventional drama with characters they can empathize with is still the top choices of Filipinos in other parts of the country.

This is short of saying that ABS-CBN has defined the taste of the country for TV soap where Sana Maulit Muli leads the pack. With Maging Sino Ka Man closely following at 33. 5 percent and Maria Flor de Luna in third place at 28.9, the network has cornered the audience for soap opera.

Patrolling news nationwide

Survey says it’s time for celebration at ABS-CBN’s News and Current Affairs. TV Patrol World remains to be the country’s leading news program, while XXX and Rated K lead in current affairs programs. (Refer to table on this page.)

GMA’s 24 Oras lodged a 22.8-percent rating to take the 20th spot. TV Patrol World, on the other hand, is the third highest rating program with 31.6 percent and XXX the fifth with 29.4, slightly behind another ABS-CBN show Komiks with 30.4 percent.

Other revelations

Wowowee is now the top noontime show across the country at no. 10 with 27.7 percent. John and Shirley and Goin’ Bulilit are ahead of all other comedy programs, Sharon leads the pack in the TV talk show genre, and Pinoy Big Brother proves to be the undisputed leader in reality shows.

“We are happy to hear the great news, but even as we celebrate leadership, we will remain vigilant in nurturing that leadership,” Charo Santos Concio, says.

Concio adds, “We will continue to sustain our audience focus—never forgetting that leadership is a result of the importance we place in our audience rather than ourselves. We will be constantly aware of the differences in the needs of Filipinos in different parts of the country and even the world to make sure that we meet all their viewing needs.”

“In ABS-CBN there will be no room for complacency as we seek continuous improvement. We will persist to be innovation leaders, and remain true to our core purpose—that of being in the service of the Filipino, wherever he may be,” Concio underscores.

Araw-araw, napapansin natin ang overnight ratings ng shows at networks ng telebisyon. Ratings sa Metro Manila o Mega-Manila, ito ang nababasa natin.

Kung magbabasa tayo ng ratings sa Visayas at Mindanao, mga ratings iyon ng Visayas at Mindanao. Hindi nangangahulugan na may ratings na tayo sa buong bansa.

GMA-7 allots P170M for regional expansion

Broadcasting firm GMA Network Inc. is spending P170 million for a regional expansion program aimed at dominating TV and radio ratings in all parts of the country.

In a statement, GMA said it is now focusing on its regional expansion program to improve its signal and program distribution capabilities in key cities across the country. Funding will come from internally-generated cash.

New transmitter facilities are now being installed in Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Gen. Santos City, Naga City, Batangas and Legaspi City.

The relay system in Cagayan de Oro is set to open on April 10 in time for the telecast of the Pacquiao-Solis boxing match scheduled on April 15.

GMA also said its transmitter facility in Sto. Tomas, Benguet, which services La Union, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija and Pampanga, was completed last January. The new transmitter facility in Naga is set to be completed by July.

Aside from this, the network is upgrading its tower and antenna system in Legaspi, which is seen to improve GMA’s coverage and reach in the viewer -rich Bicol Region.

GMA is also building a studio complex in Davao and Dagupan which are expected to be completed in October. "With these regional expansion projects already in progress, every household in the country, including those in remote areas can now look forward to a more enjoyable viewing experience of their favorite Kapuso programs. With our programs now more accessible, we expect the regional ratings to increase significantly," said GMA executive vice-president and chief operating officer Gilberto R. Duavit Jr.

Aside from this, GMA is building two state-of-the-art studios within its compound in Quezon City. The new studio complex, which will house the most modern studio equipment and facilities, costs around P1 billion.

"Weather-weather" lang yan, as they say. One comment though on "TV Patrol World"-- they were able to charge back mainly because "24 Oras" and other GMA news programs are showing signs of bias in favor of the Arroyo government lately. Plus, they are also beginning to put more "useless" news stories just to fill up their timeslot. No offense meant sa mga Kapuso diyan.

yeah, i think rounin ang ipapalit sa princess hours, sabi kasi sa homeboy ng WK cast sa 4.23 pa airing nila eh, sa 4.10 na matatapos ung PH followed by the royal special upto 4.12 so most likely rounin will premiere 4.16.07 :)
