The Miss Earth Coronation Night, directed by Johnny “Mr. M” Manahan last Nov. 26, will air tonight at 9 p.m. on Star World. For three years now, the Mr. M-directed beauty pageant has been broadcast in 30 countries by Star World, the entertainment channel of Star Group Ltd., which is the biggest cable television network in Asia and the Middle East. This makes Mr. M the only Filipino television director with an active global television career. And this is not a recent development. He also directed the Miss Universe contest held here in 1994, which was beamed around the world!

Mr. M directs almost all the special shows of ABS-CBN. Saglit na nakisaya ang big bosses ng ABS-CBN 2 na sina Gabby Lopez at Charo Santos Concio sa maagang Christmas party na inihandog ng network sa entertainment press kamakailan.

Personal nilang binati ang mga writers at editors na nakatulong sa kanila nitong 2006 at bukod pa ‘yon sa mensaheng binasa ng PR ng Dos na si Maloli na hindi naiwasang banggitin ang salitang "galing sa aming puso" bago niya ito basahin.

Anyway, bukod sa masarap na pagkaing inihanda sa mesa with lechon baboy at baka, sandamukal din ang raffle gifts na ipinamahagi sa mga writers.

Nagbigay rin ng kasiyahan ang cast ng Super Inggo na sina Sam Concepcion at Makisig Morales, ang dalawang finalists ng Pinoy Dream Academy, mga dancers at naging hosts ang maiingay na sina Pokwang at Terry.

Sa papremyong ipinamigay sa raffle, hamon at keso de bola ang iniwasang mapanalunan ng mga writers dahil almost 50 yata ‘yung boxes ng premyong ‘yon.

Madalang makahalubilo ng press sina Gabby at Charo, kaya talagang sinamantala ng editors ang pagkakataong uriratin sila tungkol sa ilang burning issues, gaya ng karera sa ratings, mga bagong programa at kung anu-ano pa.

Ani Gabby, nagkasundo na sila ng mga taga-GMA-7 na sadyang nakalalamang ang Dos pagdating sa cable ratings.

Napailing nga lang siya at kumunot ang noo nang madako ang usapan sa diumano’y pandaraya o pagmamanipula ng istasyon sa cable at non-cable ratings dahil pag-aari rin nila ang SkyCable.

Ito kasi ang itinuturong dahilan ng mga maka-GMA-7 kung bakit dumidikit o lumiliit ang kalamangan sa ratings ng mga programa ng Siyete sa Dos.

The public has witnessed how ABS-CBN suffered big blows this year, but the Kapamilya network in its Christmas Special Tuloy na Tuloy Pa Rin Ang Pasko, held at Meralco Theater to be aired tomorrow night, focuses more on the milestones and victories ABS-CBN has shared with Filipinos through production numbers.

"There are more than a hundred reasons why ABS-CBN says Angat ang Ligaya ng Pasko," declares ABS-CBN chairman, president and CEO Gabby Lopez. "And, this is exactly what will overflow – a showcase of more than a hundred of our brightest stars, a display of more than a hundred warm, beaming smiles, a kaleidoscope of more than a hundred emotions, a stage for ABS-CBN to say thank you to all our Kapamilya."

The Christmas special, directed by Johnny Manahan, travels through the best times of 2006 – from the highly-successful One Water Campaign of the ABS-CBN Foundation to the launch of the ground-breaking Kapitan book to the triumphs of People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao.

The annual TV special also takes a glimpse on the trials the network has surpassed. ABS-CBN EVP Charo Santos-Concio says that "meaningful growth comes from pain."

Charo also paid tribute to the leadership of Gabby Lopez for standing by the network and its Kapamilya during the hardest of times. Charo adds that Gabby served as an instrument of hope to all members of the ABS-CBN family.

This was affirmed by the attendance of all ABS-CBN executives led by Santos-Concio and SVP for Television Cory Vidanes.

The two-hour musical extravaganza consists of 14 impressive production numbers with performances from Sharon Cuneta, Kuh Ledesma, Gary Valenciano, Toni Gonzaga, Sam Milby, Willie Revillame, Sarah Geronimo, Zsa Zsa Padilla and Piolo Pascual.

oo nga exactly 10pm siya nag start and 10:45pm siya natapos...well i got the schedule from abs-cbn website, pero hindi naman tamang tama talaga kasi nakadepend sa tv patrol ang schedule ng primetime. kung maraming news, OT ang tvpw so mamomove rin ang kdond and teleseryes/asianovela. tamang tama OT nga tvpw kagabi kasi nga sa news regarding sa pagpatay sa isang kongresista and may live news report pa from abra. observe na lang natin what time kaya start ang PH for tonite. :)

Hindi na namin pupurihin ang ginanap na finals ng 1st Grand Star Dreamer na pinanalunan ni Yeng Constantino dahil napanood na naman ito sa national television at halos iisa ang comment ng nakapanood, "World-class ang production numbers at talagang pinagkagastusan, hindi tinipid."

Actually, ang nakasira lang sa nasabing palabas ay ang isa sa host na si Nikki Gil dahil paos ang boses, nakaka-distract siya sa mga manonood everytime na siya na ang nagsasalita.

Anyway, yung mga wala sa loob ng Araneta Coliseum ay hindi tiyak na naramdaman ang tensyon at tuwa sa loob ng Big Dome at hindi rin niya tiyak na naramdaman na habang kinakanta ang National Anthem ay nag-goose bump kami sa sobrang ganda, tumagos sa kalamnan namin dahil napakaganda ng pagkaka-awit ng "Lupang Hinirang" ng lahat ng artista, news anchor at bossing ng ABS-CBN na kinunan pa sa Intramuros.

Ito pala ‘yung binabanggit sa amin ng kaibigan namin two weeks ago na nadaanan niyang maraming nakaparadang sasakyan ng Dos sa nasabing venue sa ganap na alas sais ng umaga.

Bumilib kami dahil napagsama-sama nila ang lahat ng malalaki at maliliit nilang talents sa ganung kaagang call time? Panalo si Makisig Morales bilang si Super Inggo dahil siya ang unang ipinakita para sa first two lines ng "Lupang Hinirang."

Congratulations to Onat Diaz (director din ng The Buzz) na siyang nagdirek at produced naman ng Star Cinema na galing naman sa ABS-CBN ang budget.

Kapamilya talents, may kakaibang version ng 'Lupang Hinirang'

HERE’S congratulating ABS-CBN also for staging a very great show last Saturday.

In terms of attendance, talo ang grandfinals ng Philippine Idol. Nearly full-packed crowd ang PDA kumpara sa half-filled Araneta coliseum ng PI. Sabi ko nga, incomparable dahil iba ang liga ng PDA. Typical singing contest ang PI and they did achieve their goal of putting up a good show last time.

Hindi lang talaga maiiwasang maikumpara lalo pa’t pareho naming napuntahan at na-enjoy ang parehong shows.

Kung hindi namin kinaya ang San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra ng PI, hindi na-man namin kinaya ang well-sang and performed numbers ng mga grumadweyt sa PDA. Kahit full band lang ang nag-accompany sa kani-la, nayanig nito ang Araneta coliseum.

In fact sa opening pa lang kung saan inawit ang Lupang Hinirang, napanganga na agad kami sa video ng ABS-CBN. They did an awesome job in coming up with their own version of Lupang Hinirang showing their ‘kapamilya talents’ singing the national anthem. Sina Dolphy, Mayor Vilma Santos, Charo Santos, Sharon Cuneta,Maricel Soriano, Kris Aquino, Boy Abunda, Willie Revillame, Claudine Barretto ang ilan sa mga natandaan namin sa video. Lahat sila nakaputi at kikilabutan ka ta-laga sa nasabing video. Bigla nga naming na-feel na masarap talagang maging Pinoy.

Guys don`t bother sa ratings na lalabas just enjoy the series kasi talagang maganda wag na din kayo pa-bother sa maninira sa makukuha nitong ratings.... ( i remember kasi di din kasi kataasan ang ratings ng My Girl 20-25 cguro pero ang daming tao ang nakakaalam and ngkkwentuhan about it...same with PH di pa nga nagsisimula dami na ang nagkkwentuhan bout it so ratings don`t totally reflects the number of its viewers )

The ‘most likely’ Metrofest winner

The annual Metro Manila Film Festival kicked off yesterday and the great news is that it is one of those good years where there are lots of entries that are worth watching.

Half of the entries are must-sees, while the rest are puede pasar and only one is intolerable.

Like what I do year after year, I make a forecast of the winners days ahead and match it with the choices of the judges come awards night (on Dec. 29 at the Aliw Theater).

Below is my list of the "most likely" winners in this year’s Metro Filmfest:

Best Child Actor

• Nash Aguas (Shake, Rattle & Roll 8, Yaya episode) — Although he gets great support from Sheryl Cruz, Debraliz Valasote, TJ Trinidad, Boom Antonio and, of course, Iza Calzado (who plays his mother yaya), the boy carries the episode by himself and, in fact, should be put in the lead category, except that MMFF rules dictate that kid performers should compete under the Best Child Actor race. But he is a runaway winner in this category — and deservingly so if only for all that energy he pours into his role.

Best Supporting Actor

• Johnny Delgado (Ligalig) — It’s a very short role (as the father of Cesar Montano), but like any Johnny Delgado performance, it is memorable and this makes him a strong candidate for best supporting actor.

• John Regala (Ligalig) — As the shell shock victim brother of Sunshine Cruz, this 1994 Urian Best Supporting Actor (for Fatima Buen) gives a very intense performance and he is my actual bet for Best Supporting Actor.

• Ariel Ureta (Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo) — This former TV superstar only made two movies in the past (Zoom, Zoom Superman and Si Popeye Atbp.), but he played the title roles in these films that were both blockbuster hits. Thirty-three years later, he resumes his film acting career and we finally see what a sensitive performer he really is. Unfortunately, his role is a bit too short and less marked compared to the other people in his category. But I wouldn’t mind if he won Best Supporting Actor.

• Chokoleit (Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah) — If the judges want to have fun, this standup comic may just win Best Supporting Actor. He is actually in the entire film — with a bigger screen exposure than Rustom Padilla and Zsa Zsa Padilla. The trouble is, since he plays support, the director’s attention isn’t focused on him totally and he has lapses in some of his performances. And since he is on the screen all the time, the chance for him to err is bigger — unlike Johnny Delgado, John Regala and Ariel Ureta whose roles are shorter but are able to stay more focused on their respective characters.

Best Supporting Actress

• Gina Pareño (Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo) — During the awards season next year, she will be in the running for both lead and supporting actress — for Kubrador and this movie. Pareño is a delight to watch as the mother of Judy Ann Santos. She is so hilarious that you beg to see her even in scenes where she is not included. Her best moment is that part where she moves to a hotel because she feels unwelcome in the house of Judy Ann’s in-laws. Here, you see what a terrific actress she is — either in drama or in comedy.

• Celia Rodriguez (Ligalig) – It’s a Ma Barker-inspired role, but she is careful not to make a caricature out of it – a clear indication that she is, indeed, a very disciplined actress. As the gun-toting mother of Sunshine Cruz, you see her tough side most of the time, but in one scene where she mourns the death of a child, you see another facet of her and she is brilliant.

• Lorna Tolentino (Mano Po 5: Gua Ay Di) – It’s one of those borderline roles. This Mano Po edition is a love story that revolves around Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin, but it is the Yolanda Co character of Lorna (as Angel’s traditional Chinese mother) that holds everything together. Lorna is actually all over the film – to the delight of the viewers because she lights up every scene with her remarkable performance. Local moviegoers will be thrilled – and surprised – to see a different Lorna Tolentino here. In Mano Po 5, the drama queen goes comedy and succeeds tenfold. (I swear you will relish each one of her one-liners). The mark of a true versatile actress.

Best Actress

• Judy Ann Santos (Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo) – I’m betting all the material possessions I have in this life (that’s not really much) that Judy Ann will leave Aliw Theater on Friday with the best actress trophy – practically without contest. It’s not that she doesn’t have competition (because there’s a lot). But she is so good in her role as a young bride that it is impossible for anyone to beat her in this race.

Best Actor

• Ryan Agoncillo (Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo) – It would be a good photo-op to see Judy Ann and Ryan clutching acting trophies together – and that is a possibility, depending on the taste of the judges. If this happens, I wouldn’t mind it because this relatively new screen actor delivers a very decent performance in this movie. Of course, the field is tough. But if I have a Top 3, he is one of them.

• Cesar Montano (Ligalig) – He puts a lot of sensitivity into the role as a taxi driver who has a rather mysterious life. Cesar winning Best Actor (again) is very acceptable and much deserved – if ever. In Ligalig, he proves to all that he is our local version of Al Pacino – because that is how the Hollywood legend would have attacked the role if the Ligalig lead character were given to him.

• Rustom Padilla (Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah) – While Cesar Montano is deserving of the Best Actor prize, the judges may find it refreshing to give the award to Rustom Padilla, who has not won any acting prize in this career. If this happens, Rustom would be just as deserving. As the gay beauty parlor owner, he is excellent in all his scenes – whether it is comedy, drama or musical. Yes, I think he uses his own voice. But even if it is not a Gary Valenciano or Martin Nievera singing voice, you still appreciate it because he puts so much heart into it. I only wish people would not wisecrack about which category he should be put under (Best Actor, but of course!) because the way he tackles his gay part is politically correct and we should admire and respect him for that.
