3rd Golden Screen Awards pushing through

As they say, better late than never. After so much delay due to production hitches, the 3rd Golden Screen Awards of the Entertainment Press Society is, at last, finally pushing through. The event will be held at the Pagcor Grand Theater at the Casino Filipino in Paranaque on October 26, Thursday at 7pm and will be hosted by Boy Abunda, Phoemela Barranda and Chynna Ortaleza and to be aired on Saturday, October 28 on IBC 13.

Guest performers are Ogie Alcasid, Lovi, Ara Mina, Sexbomb Girls, Aryana, Jenny Hernandez, Kristel Fulgar, Joey, Jeremie Antiporda, Kuh Ledesma and Zsa Zsa Padilla. Trivia hosts are Marvin Agustin, Mark Anthony Fernandez and Nadine Samonte. To introduce the best picture nominees is John Lloyd Cruz.

The 3rd Golden Screen Awards is presented by Tamayo's Catering, Aquasoft, Filgen (The Makers of Super Tibay), Racini Bags and Luggages, Sisters Sanitary Napkin, and KSA Magic Enterprises. The awards night is produced by X Zone Entertainment and PRO-ADS Concepts. It will be directed by Ding Bolanos.

Today, voting members of the Golden Screen Awards will deliberate and choose the winners on the various categories. To refresh your memory, we are running here again the list of nominees in various categories. As much as we would like to do a fearless forecast on who would win, being one of the voting members and vice-president of the Golden Screen Awards at that, prudence and delicadeza dictate that we refrain from giving any. Not A Usual Thing

Congratulations GMA Kapuso Network for winning the Star Best Station despite the fact that it garnered a lesser number of awards compared to its rival network, the ABS-CBN Kapamilya.

It was not indeed a usual thing to happen that a station bags the majority of awards and yet didn't end up winning the Best Station. What would be the explanation behind this event? Rumors are inevitable and persistent but the final words must come from the members of PMPC award giving body themselves.

So much for that, what really makes a station the "Best" one? Well, only the audience can answer that. Yet, basing from the result of the event, and due to the number of the awards garnered by a single station, it should automatically be considered as one.

What is "Best Station" title anyway if it contains underrated shows and second-rate programs? As for me, the "Best" that matters is the "Show", which really tells if the station is best or not.

For the Kapamilya Network, congratulations, for you truly deserve to have the "Best" shows in Philippine television. Very true: ABS-CBN means "All the Best Shows Come from the Brightest Network".

Keep up the good work, Kapamilya!

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. leads the nationwide television viewership share against rival GMA Network Inc., according to AGB Nielsen Media Research (Philippines) nationwide survey released Thursday.

The AGB Nielsen’s first nationwide urban television audience measurement (NUTAM) shows that ABS-CBN’s 43-percent viewership share put the company ahead of rival GMA Networks Inc., which garnered 35.2-percent rating, during the survey period October 8 to October 13.

NUTAM is an expansion of the current AGBNMR panel installation in Metro Manila homes. Using the on-line "peoplemeter," it provides a total picture of television viewership in the entire Philippines through 24-hour monitoring of the panel homes.

A total of 1,500 panel homes will represent a universe of 7.26 million national urban TV homes from the following areas: North and Central Luzon with 300 homes; Metro Manila, 400 homes; South Luzon, 300 homes; Visayas, 300, homes; and Mindanao, 200 homes.

The survey also disclosed that ABS-CBN led audience rating in North and Central Luzon with 40 percent; Visayas, 57.3 percent; Mindanao, 62.2 percent; Metro Cebu, 55.2 percent; Metro Davao, 57.7 percent; and Iloilo with 50.6 percent.

On the other hand, GMA led in areas in Metro Manila, with 40.6 percent compared to ABS 35.2 percent and in Southern Luzon of 38.3 percent versus rival’s 35.2 percent.

Maya Reforma, AGBNMR (Philippines) general manager, explained that the expansion provides comprehensive and relevant high-quality data for business and nation building and strengthens the Philippines’ development surge.

The AGB Nielsen said Luzon registered the highest TV ownership at 92 percent and cable ownership at 23 percent.

The survey also shows that the Visayas has the largest chunk of class E at 29 percent and the most number of homes with children at 64 percent, with Mindanao hugging has the largest chunk of class D at 60 percent and the most number of families.

In a related development, AC Nielsen said that for the first half of the year, TV advertising expenditures amounted to P22.6 billion; radio advertising, P4.93 billion; and print, P966 million.

The top TV advertisers are Unilever Philippines with P5.01 billion; Procter & Gamble, P4.9 billion; Nestlé, P3.3 billion; United Laboratories, P2.2 billion; Smart Communications Inc., P971 million; Fortune Tobacco, P855 million; Johnson & Johnson, P859 million; Wyeth, P827 million; and Globe, P783 million.

In radio, the top advertisers are Unilab, Unilver, Fortune, F&G, Tanduay, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes, Nestlé, San Miguel, Colgate and Petron.

Jay G. Bautista, AC Nielsen executive director, said the strong performance of the economy is the one factor of the rising media spending. "They are confident that consumers can buy a certain product," he explained.

Jerico Barrera, AC Nielsen associate director, however, noted that the gap in the advertising level between television and radio is a function of cost per spot.

Barrera added that 60 percent of the total advertising money invested by advertisers in radio campaigns is in Metro Manila. "If we look at each area, advertising expenditure in the Visayas are growing faster than the other areas," he pointed out.

The biggest number of ad spots of about 79 percent, he noted, was placed in Metro Manila and the rest in Cebu, 14 percent, and Davao, 7 percent. regarding the article "ABS-CBN leads GMA 7 in viewership share" hindi na yan kinukuwestiyon, alam naman nating lahat na mas pinanood ng marami ang ABS-CBN over the other network. my observation dito sa lugar namin, pinaguusapan talaga ang mga palabas ng ABS-CBN sa mga wet market, carinderia, bangko. shows especially PDA and KDOND. sa mga bata kahit saan maririnig talaga ang mga pangalan nina Budong, Jomar pati na rin si Pacita. my 2-yr old cousin habang nanonood ng KDOND, sisgaw siya ng DEAL or NO DEAL. these cite malakas ang ABS-CBN sa mga tao.

Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Prizes shortlist out

The finalists of the ABU Prizes 2006 programme categories have been selected from a total of 211 entries for its radio and TV categories this year, an all-time record for the awards since it was introduced in 1964.

There were 147 entries for the TV categories, and 64 for radio. The pre-selection of the awards, which was held last week, saw entries that were of high quality, creativity and innovation.

NHK-Japan, RTPRC-China, IRIB-Iran and RTHK-Hong Kong lead the nominations with five each. NAB-Japan has four programmes on the shortlist, while Korean broadcasters KBS and EBS have three finalists each.

The TV categories are Drama, Entertainment, Children, Youth, News, Documentary, and Sports. There is also a Special Jury Prize which is awarded to programmes targeting broadcasters from less developed countries which showed creativity despite the limited resources available.

NIKKI Gil turned to be a competent daily host of “Pinoy Dream Academy” at primetime. She has an engaging presence and is very articulate in delivering all her spiels, just like Toni Gonzaga in “Pinoy Big Brother”. Now, she tries acting in “Star Magic Presents” in the episode “Love and the City”, where she’s paired with Geoff Eigenmann. “I’m comfortable with Geoff as we go the same church,” she says. “But what really excited me is that the episode is directed by the award-winning Joel Lamangan. I knew I’d learn a lot from him about acting and I did.”

“Love in the City” is the story of Trina (Nikkie) and Sonny (Geoff.) Sonny is a rich guy from the province who tries living in the big city where he meets Trina, a street smart girl who teaches him on how to survive city life. He eventually falls for her, but Trina is not interested as her goal is to migrate to America and she’s willing to pay an American who’d be willing to marry her so she can live there. Sonny then sells his pet cow and gives the money to Trina so she can arrange her marriage of convenience. Somehow, he’s hoping she won’t accept the money, but she does, and he’s heartbroken and goes home to the province. Will love find a way to reunite the couple? Find out this Saturday at “Star Magic Presents”, 5 p.m. on ABS-CBN.

BOTH ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. and Korina Sanchez had very much wanted to rectify the Cocktales’ Monday report that the top news anchor had agreed to apologize to ABS-CBN news and current affairs chief Maria Ressa.

The intended message was supposed to have been something along this line: No apology is forthcoming or even contemplated because there is nothing to apologize for.

But the ABS-CBN statement was never issued, because the issuance would apparently violate the network’s own policy prohibiting staffers, officials and even board members from disclosing or even confirming details of such delicate items such as ongoing management-personnel discussion.

In short, ABS-CBN has adopted a gag rule, and has elected to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous leakers and mischievous columnists.

Except for that apology angle, we are happy to note that the two previous columns on Korina and the “Tres Marias” and, more important than the personalities involved, on how the network’s editorial parameters are being challenged and refreshed -- given the demands of the times -- have generally been on the ball.

Finally, ABS-CBN has chosen a young female lead for its upcoming teleserye, "Maria Flordeluna." The new version is a remake of the original radio serial by Loida Virinia and not the nightly drama on RPN 9, which catapulted Janice de Belen into fame.

We learned RPN 9 was charging too much royalty fees from ABS-CBN if the latter uses the title "Flordeluna" in the new teleserye. This is the reason ABS-CBN decided to change the title to "Maria Flordeluna," to avoid paying any exorbitant royalty fees.
Starring in the new TV version is Eliza Pineda of "Going Bulilit" fame, who was chosen from more than a thousand young female talents who auditioned for the lead role. Eliza will take on the challenge of stepping into Janice de Belen’s shoes. It will be remembered that when Janice was introduced in the title role of "Flordeluna" in the early ’80s, she readily became a household name and subsequently a big star of her generation.

In "Maria Flordeluna," Albert Martinez will play the role of Col. Leo Alicante, originated by the late Dindo Fernando, while Eula Valdez will be Jo Alicante, once played by Laurice Guillen. Vina Morales will essay the part of Emma Yuhico, the mother of Flordeluna. Kris Aquino was originally tapped to play the role, but had to beg off because of her pregnancy.

What’s this we heard that GMA 7’s late-night public affairs program, "Debate," will soon go off the air? In fact, a production staff of GMA 7 whispered to us "Debate" is set to tape or air its final episode this week.

Is it really true that "Debate" has been clobbered by competition? Ironically, the show that topples "Debate" in the ratings race is a late-night Mexican telenovela on ABS-CBN, "Miranda de Mujer," which, surprisingly, has been getting a lot of loyal following despite its after-midnight timeslot.

For years, ABS-CBN has tried to pit different programs against "Debate." But perhaps even the network executives are now smiling because of the fact that only a Mexican telenovela can edge out "Debate" in the ratings.

Finally, ABS-CBN has chosen a young female lead for its upcoming teleserye, "Maria Flordeluna." The new version is a remake of the original radio serial by Loida Virinia and not the nightly drama on RPN 9, which catapulted Janice de Belen into fame.

We learned RPN 9 was charging too much royalty fees from ABS-CBN if the latter uses the title "Flordeluna" in the new teleserye. This is the reason ABS-CBN decided to change the title to "Maria Flordeluna," to avoid paying any exorbitant royalty fees.
Starring in the new TV version is Eliza Pineda of "Going Bulilit" fame, who was chosen from more than a thousand young female talents who auditioned for the lead role. Eliza will take on the challenge of stepping into Janice de Belen’s shoes. It will be remembered that when Janice was introduced in the title role of "Flordeluna" in the early ’80s, she readily became a household name and subsequently a big star of her generation.

In "Maria Flordeluna," Albert Martinez will play the role of Col. Leo Alicante, originated by the late Dindo Fernando, while Eula Valdez will be Jo Alicante, once played by Laurice Guillen. Vina Morales will essay the part of Emma Yuhico, the mother of Flordeluna. Kris Aquino was originally tapped to play the role, but had to beg off because of her pregnancy.

Maganda yung birthday gift na nakukuha nya ngayon kasi we can say at this time that ABS-CBN is number 1 nationwide and Mega Manila is just within the reach. Parang 2 years lang ang nakakaraan when she had her low point when ABS-CBN was beaten in 2004. She admitted she cried at that time pero ngayon I am sure she is happy and contented. I just can't imagine ABS-CBN without Charo Santos.

About dun sa natalo sa primetime last Thursday, tama yung clue na swerte daw ang buntis. Mabagal na rin kasi ang labas ng ratings ngayon na maski yung mga sources ko ay wala ring maibigay.Ang masasabi ko lang unti-unti ng lumalabas ang kahinaan ng GMA ngayon. They are keep on doing the mistakes that ABS-CBN have done before. Una na yung panay na pagkuha nila ng mga talents from ABS-CBN. It is a big turn-off.

One good sign na gumaganda na ang laban natin is panay na ang pagtatapos ng mga programa nila kagaya ng Ang Pagbabago, korean novela sa hapon, Love To Love, SOP Gigsters. Pati na rin ang mga matatagal ng programa ay tinatapos na rin nila kagaya ng Debate.

Exciting yung darating na January para sa atin kasi the last quarter of 2006 will still be a neck-to-neck fight with GMA.

Well, mas importante naman talaga ang Mega Manila ratings kasi the bottom line is if you add up all those na may television sets sa buong Pilipinas, pinakamarami pa rin dito sa Manila. Kaya nga di importante yung nationwide ratings na yan sa mga advertisers.

The Population density (population per square meter) of Mega Manila is far greater than any other city or province in the Philippines. So to simplify things, pwede nating sabihing mas maraming viewers dito sa Mega Manila
than anywhere around the country.

Hence, GMA is correct to claim that they are the number one in the Philippines.

Una na ring naiulat na bahagyang mas mataas ang ratings ng mga shows
ng ABS sa Metro Manila kung ikukumpara sa kabuuang Mega Manila.

Base na rin sa mga impormasyon, masasabing panalo o bahagyang panalo
ang mga KAPAMILYA sa METRO MANILA lalo na sa mga MAS matataas na uri
na lipunan.(Class ABC), samantalang panalo ang GMA sa SUBURBS at sa

Masasabi na ring rason kung bakit mas mataas ang share ng GMA sa
class DE dahil na rin sa kawalan ng mga viewers ng Class DE ng CABLE
TV., at dahil dito, nawawalan na rin sila ng opsyon sa panonood kung
saan mas mahina ang signal ng ABS dito sa mega manila.

Bakit din mas kumikita ang mga pelikula ng Star Cinema kung
ikukumpara sa GMA Films? At kung bakit naman kahit ALAM ng GMA na
dominante nila ang MEGA MANILA ay hindi sila naglalakas ng loob na
gumawa ng pelikula?

Ang sagot ay dahil na rin alam nilang MATAAS lamang ang market nila
sa mga PINAKAMAHIHIRAP na tao sa Mega Manila, yung mga hindi kayang
MANOOD ng SINE, sa ganoong paraan, malulugi lamang ang mga
pelikulang ilalabas nila. Ganun na rin ang rason kung bakit
KADALASANG BLOCKBUSTER ang mga pelikula ng star cinema, dahil na rin
may kakayahan silang MAKUHA ang MARKET ng mga manonood na kayang
MANOOD ng SINE, ayon ang rason kung bakit nagagawang ipalabas ang
mga pelikulang tulad ng Sukob, Close to You, at Don't Give Up On Us

Sa paglabas ng ratings share accdg sa social status, mas naliwanagan
ang mga tao kung bakit maraming kapuso sa mega manila, dahil sa

Barbell, ang magic ni Sabina, at ang romansa sa New York. Sila yung

However, because they select their random samples depending on on the population density of the vicinity (which means that if they select 10,000 respondents from a population of 10,000,000 representing 1/1000 of the population, then in another area where there's a population of 20,000, then they'll select 20 respondents.)

So kunwari out of the the 20 respondents, 70% of the respondents are ABS-CBN watchers (and if I may extend our hypothesis kanina na the rest of the population nanonood na ng GMA, which is 30%). And let's say 60% out of the 10,000 respondents, naman GMA yung pinanonood nila, then of course mas marami pa rin yung nirerepresent nila kesa sa 70% sa ABS-CBN.

Mega Manila represents 1/4 to 1/3 of the population of the entire Philippines and therefore is representative of the entire Philippines itself. ABS-CBN leads GMA 7 in viewership share


ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. leads the nationwide television viewership share against rival GMA Network Inc., according to AGB Nielsen Media Research (Philippines) nationwide survey released Thursday.

The AGB Nielsen’s first nationwide urban television audience measurement (NUTAM) shows that ABS-CBN’s 43-percent viewership share put the company ahead of rival GMA Networks Inc., which garnered 35.2-percent rating, during the survey period October 8 to October 13.

NUTAM is an expansion of the current AGBNMR panel installation in Metro Manila homes. Using the on-line “peoplemeter,” it provides a total picture of television viewership in the entire Philippines through 24-hour monitoring of the panel homes.

A total of 1,500 panel homes will represent a universe of 7.26 million national urban TV homes from the following areas: North and Central Luzon with 300 homes; Metro Manila, 400 homes; South Luzon, 300 homes; Visayas, 300, homes; and Mindanao, 200 homes.

The survey also disclosed that ABS-CBN led audience rating in North and Central Luzon with 40 percent; Visayas, 57.3 percent; Mindanao, 62.2 percent; Metro Cebu, 55.2 percent; Metro Davao, 57.7 percent; and Iloilo with 50.6 percent.

On the other hand, GMA led in areas in Metro Manila, with 40.6 percent compared to ABS 35.2 percent and in Southern Luzon of 38.3 percent versus rival’s 35.2 percent.

Maya Reforma, AGBNMR (Philippines) general manager, explained that the expansion provides comprehensive and relevant high-quality data for business and nation building and strengthens the Philippines’ development surge.

The AGB Nielsen said Luzon registered the highest TV ownership at 92 percent and cable ownership at 23 percent.

The survey also shows that the Visayas has the largest chunk of class E at 29 percent and the most number of homes with children at 64 percent, with Mindanao hugging has the largest chunk of class D at 60 percent and the most number of families.

In a related development, AC Nielsen said that for the first half of the year, TV advertising expenditures amounted to P22.6 billion; radio advertising, P4.93 billion; and print, P966 million.

The top TV advertisers are Unilever Philippines with P5.01 billion; Procter & Gamble, P4.9 billion; Nestlé, P3.3 billion; United Laboratories, P2.2 billion; Smart Communications Inc., P971 million; Fortune Tobacco, P855 million; Johnson & Johnson, P859 million; Wyeth, P827 million; and Globe, P783 million.

In radio, the top advertisers are Unilab, Unilver, Fortune, F&G, Tanduay, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes, Nestlé, San Miguel, Colgate and Petron.

Jay G. Bautista, AC Nielsen executive director, said the strong performance of the economy is the one factor of the rising media spending. “They are confident that consumers can buy a certain product,” he explained.

Jerico Barrera, AC Nielsen associate director, however, noted that the gap in the advertising level between television and radio is a function of cost per spot.

Barrera added that 60 percent of the total advertising money invested by advertisers in radio campaigns is in Metro Manila. “If we look at each area, advertising expenditure in the Visayas are growing faster than the other areas,” he pointed out.

The biggest number of ad spots of about 79 percent, he noted, was placed in Metro Manila and the rest in Cebu, 14 percent, and Davao, 7 percent.

wow! panalo na pala abs-cbn sa iloilo. dati kasi close fight ang dalawang istasyon which was in favor for the other by a mere point. that was during the time wherein abs-cbn was at its lowest. i admit it panalo talaga ang kabila kasi mga palabas nila ang pinag-uusapan pero iba na ang kaso ngayon. nasa limelight na ngayon ang abs-cbn, kahit saan bukambibig mga palabas ng dos especially dond and pda. dapat talaga mamaintain nila ang status nila ngayon which i'm happy with the way things are in store for them. give us good shows like bituing walang ningning and maging sino ka man na talagang pampahatak ng mga viewers. even super inggo is doing good, huwag lang pahabaiin to the point na mawala ang takbo ng kwento. i like the way they implement a 6-month run for a certain show. kung maganda saka mag extend ng another 2 weeks like in the case of bwn. ang hindi ko talaga makalimutan is malaki ang pagtulong ng komiks and nagmamahal kapamilya sa saturday slot and special mention for your song and love spell naman sa sunday afternoon. maganda ang takbo nila. noon, hirap talaga talunin ang love2love ng kabila. kung anu-anong palabas ang ginawa ng dos na di talaga makuha ang tamang kasagutan. buti na lang patience paid off, nagawa din ng dos kaya ayun magpapaalam na sila sa ere. gusto ko rin na during weekdays, drama and news sa gabi, tapos sitcom and comedy on weekend. tamang tama lang ang timpla.

Anyway, the distribution of the panel in the survey fairly represents the country population. Now, as to Mega Manila's importance it has already 400 compared to North and Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, Visayas (each having 300) and Mindanao 200 panelists. Therefore, AGB Nielsen puts weight on the significance of the Manila market.

Hi stan! Actually, I never mentioned that the Mega Manila ratings is equivalent to the ratings of the entire country. Ang sabi ko that the heart of the viewing population is in Mega Manila and I supplemented that by saying that 1/4 to 1/3 of the entire population of the country is in Mega Manila. What I have been mentioning so far is that the ratings here in Mega Manila represent and if I may continue in my line of reasoning, approximate what viewers in the Philippines watch.

While it is true that the Mega Manila ratings are a powerful factor as to what advertisers will showcase on TV stations in Manila, and I also agree that not all ads will definitely be profitable and applicable to the viewing population outside the metropolis, most buyers are actually from the metro. In regional channels, if you watch their ads, you'll see more ads about starter feeds, insect and pest repellants, etc.

And my statement, "What Mega Manila viewers want represents what the viewers in the Philippines want too," becomes correct because yes, there still is like 2/3 to 3/4 of the population of the country outside Mega Manila but due to poverty, conflict and strife, about 30-50% of this number is unable to have access to television. Thus even if there are ads everywhere that in Mindanao for instance, ABS-CBN viewership reaches 60% while GMA is a far second at 20%, the number of viewers here is not that significant.

Di ako nakikipag-away. I just want others to be aware of my views that's all. I respect other people's opinions too.

MAY dalawang matinding dahilan kung bakit dapat mag-celebrate ang ABS-CBN. Base sa report ng AGB Nielsen Media Research (Philippines) in a nationwide survey it conducted, ABS-CBN earned a viewership share of 43 percent compared sa nakuha ng GMA-7 na 35.2.

Ito’y halaw sa AGB Nielsen nationwide urban television audience measurement (NUTAM). Ang period na covered ng survey ay October 8 to 13.

Sa katatapos na Star Awards for TV naman, ang ABS-CBN ang nakatanggap ng pinakamaraming awards, kabilang na ang quadruple victory ng ASAP bilang Best Musical Variety Show, Best Female TV Host (for Toni Gonzaga), Best Male TV host (for Luis Manzano) and Best New Male Personality for (Sam Milby).

ABS-CBN: Most awarded station at the Star Awards. ABS-CBN proved victorious during the recent 2006 Star Awards for Television held at the UP Theater as the kapamilya network bagged the most number of awards, 26 in all.
Leading the roster of winners from the Kapamilya network is the station’s Sunday noontime show "ASAP" which won four awards: Best Musical Variety Show, Best Female TV Host for Toni Gonzaga, Best Male TV Host for Luis Manzano, and Best New Male Personality for Sam Milby.

Named Best Drama Anthology was "Maalaala Mo Kaya." Also, Vilma Santos received the Best Single Performance by an Actress for her MMK episode "Regalo," while Carlo Aquino got his award for the "Scapular" episode of MMK.

Diamond Star Maricel Soriano got the Best Drama Actress plum for her role in "Vietnam Rose," while Diether Ocampo was Best Drama Actor for "Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin."

The Judy Ann Santos-Piolo Pascual starrer "Sa Piling Mo" won as Best Drama Series, while "Kumikitang Kabuhayan" was named Best Educational Program. "Komiks" won as Best Horror/Fantasy Program.

"TV Patrol World" and its male anchor, Julius Babao, received awards as Best News Program, and Best Male Newscaster, respectively.

Korina Sanchez won as Best Magazine Show Host for "Rated K," which was also named Best Magazine Show.

"Magandang Umaga Pilipinas" and its hosts snatched the Best Morning Show award with Julius Babao, Christine Bersola and Bernadette Sembrano named Best Morning Show Hosts. 1. Survey results are the main concern of advertisers. Currently there are only two main sources of TV survey reports: AC Nielsen and Audits of Great Britain (AGB). Overnight ratings are only done in the Manila (http://www.tsinoy.com/forum/showthread.php?t=102#) area where the bulk of consumers are situated. This includes the cities and municipalities of Metro Manila and the 1neighboring provinces of Laguna, Rizal, Cavite and Bulacan.

2. Of more than 80 million Filipinos, 10.2 million live in Metro Manila alone! Cavite has a population of 1.9 million, Rizal has 1.7 million, Laguna has 1.7 million and Bulacan has 2.2 million. Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces would account for almost 18 million or 22% of the total Philippine population. There are only three considered metropolis in the country. Of the other metropolitan areas, Metro Cebu has a population of 1.4 million and Metro Davao has a population of 1.2 million. Other key cities with population over 250,000 but are not considered metropolis are Iloilo, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Zamboanga, San Fernando and Baguio. Dagupan, a relatively small city, only has a population of 150,000. All in all, Luzon would constitute 56% of the total Philippine population. Mindanao would account 24% and Visayas 20%. 3. There are 13.8 million total households in the Philippines (http://www.tsinoy.com/forum/showthread.php?t=102#); 3.75 million are in Metro Manila, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite and Bulacan. 4. Of the 13.8 million total Philippine households, 9.8 million have TV sets. 1.83 million TV households are in Metro Manila alone. It would add up to 3.5 million TV households in Metro Manila, Laguna, Rizal, Cavite and Bulacan area or roughly 1/3 of the total TV households in the Philippines. Metro Cebu only has a total of 260,000 TV households. Metro Davao has around 230,000 TV households. Dagupan only has 25,000 TV households. Other key cities have an average TV household of 70,000. 5. Metro Manila has the highest television penetration rate (% of population with TV sets) at 96%. Cavite, Laguna, Rizal and Bulacan have a combined TV penetration rate of 93%. Luzon has an average TV penetration rate of 70%, Mindanao 63% and Visayas 60%. Metro Cebu and Metro Davao has a higher TV penetration rate than the national average of 71%. 6. Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces have the highest TV reach than any other region in the country. ABS-CBN has a 99% TV households reached in Metro Manila. GMA has 97%, RPN 95%, NBN 91%, IBC 92%, ABC 92% and Studio 23 74%. Outside Metro Manila, TV reach gradually decreases. (Source:Philippine Media Factbook)

7. Metro Manila, Cavite, Rizal, Laguna and Bulacan are in the top ten richest provinces of the Philippines with lower poverty incidences. Metro Manila consumers are the most important to advertisers because of its high standard of living. Nearly 100% of the upper class have TV sets, 94% of the middle class have TV sets and 46% of the lower class have TV sets.

8. Generally, Filipinos watch about 200 minutes of television daily. This high level of viewing is only second to Japanese viewers. Peak viewing times are between noon and 1 pm and in the prime time from 7 to 10 pm. Metro Manila has the highest ratio of TV exposure with 91.3% while other regions are more exposed to the radio. 9. There is a ‘culture of centralism’ where most of the TV programs are produced in Manila. National headquarters of the TV networks are located in Metro Manila.

10. Metro Cebu, Metro Davao and Dagupan does not represent the viewing habits of the rest of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Viewing habits vary considerably from city to city. Metro Cebu (where ABS-CBN leads) does not represent the viewing habit of the whole Visayas because it differs with the viewing habit of Iloilo (where GMA-7 leads), another large city in the Visayas. Dagupan does not represent the viewing habit of the rest of Luzon because it has a relatively high cable penetration of 50%; the national average cable penetration rate is only 11%. Metro Davao does not represent the viewing habit of the rest of Mindanao because of its small percentage of the total TV households in Mindanao.

11. As what history shows, the provinces follow the trend in Metro Manila. ABS-CBN became number 1 in Metro Manila in 1988. It took them quite a while to grab the lead in the provinces. The company became number 1 in the Visayas in the early 1990’s. It only became number 1 in Mindanao in the late 1990’s when they started to put up TV relay stations in the key cities of Mindanao.

12. Advertising is also centered in Metro Manila. It spends $347 million dollar in advertising spending. That is almost 20 billion pesos. So TV advertising is really important. Company profit and revenues reflect the company performance in the Manila area.

According to infomamedia.com, it is projected that by 2010, total number of Philippine TV households would increase to 10.689 million. Cable penetration would increase to almost 15%.

Observations:

1. Assuming the ratings are true:
If GMA controls 46% of the audience share in Mega Manila and ABS-CBN controls 34% of Mega Manila audience share, it would equate to 1.61 million households for GMA and 1.19 million for ABS-CBN. The difference is a significant 420,000 TV households or 2,100,000 million people. That is a number larger than any of the total TV households of Metro Cebu or Metro Davao. If we are to analyze the other ratings and take those as representative of the national scene, the battle for supremacy would be a close fight between GMA and ABS-CBN. It would be interesting to know who would be the number 1 station. Right now, GMA enjoys the status of being number 1 with all the ratings, revenues, and profits. But one thing is for sure, this has been the most intense and closest competition in the history of Philippine television.

2. If we are to add the total number of households of Metro Manila, Laguna, Rizal, Bulacan, Cavite, Metro Cebu, Metro Davao and Dagupan. Metro Cebu would only constitute 6.1%, Metro Davao 5.4%, Dagupan 0.7% and Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces would constitute 87.8%. This is quite similar to the weights given by AC Nielsen on its survey in Mega Manila 87%, Metro Cebu 6%, Metro Davao 6% and Dagupan 1%. So the combined ratings released by AC Nielsen are statistically acceptable.

3. Mega Manila ratings are essential for advertisers and TV stations. GMA significantly lead in the Manila area. Because of this, GMA performs better financially. For the past three years, GMA has been the most profitable broadcast company in the country. It outdone ABS-CBN in 2002 and 2003 when it was just beginning to eat the ratings gap of ABS-CBN. Then in 2004 the big switch happened in the ratings, and GMA inched its way further in the profit game. And for the early part of 2005, ABS-CBN suffered its first financial loss and GMA continued to increase its earnings. That is why ABS-CBN is eager to take back the lead in the Mega Manila area.

My argument still remains. Mega Manila is just a part of the WHOLE market, and will not represent nor will be considered the WHOLE Philippines.

Fiesta mode pala tayo ngayon kasi ang taas ng ratings natin. Nakakatuwa lang na yung Kapamilya Cinema na dati ay inaayawan ng marami kasi pampasira sa ratings sa hapon ay top-rater na ngayon.

The primetime line-up also looks promising kasi last Monday ay nag-tie na sa ratings ang Super Inggo at Atlantika considering na lumabas na si Dingdong Dantes sa show. Between the two shows, mas maganda talaga ang Super Inggo kasi Atlantika is a boring at hindi rin maganda ang effects nila plus the fact that the acting is so bad. Even Cherrie Pie Picache and Jean Garcia cannot act well.

Ang mas exciting pa is the fight between TVP and 24Oras.

Actually just wanted to give comment sa Wowowee... akala ng lahat na after the tragedy is un na ang magiging downfall ng show na to..at the start yes it was... pero barely 2 months ago...napapansin ko na marami talaga viewers ng show na to kasi naglalakad ako along streets sa manila habang papunta ako sa review center ko sa Espanya Blvd. e inoobserbahan ko ang mga tv sets na nadadaanan ko, and mostly tlga e wowowee ang pinapanood at mangilan ngilan lang ang nakikita ko na nanonood ng EB... i must admit na d ako nanonood ng noontime show but nitong mga nakaraang buwan pag uwi ko ng apartment ko, i can't help but laugh and get touched sa wowowee...sa mga natural bloopers sa bigatin portion ba un pati ung mga me talent portion pa den pati ung mga nagkkwen2 ng buhay nila and mga bumabati sa mga kamag anak nila. I saw it very "family oriented" ang opening ng show...as in tlagang ung opening ng show was devoted cya pra makabati sa mga kapamilya nila all over the world... very nice db and natural... mga astigin na mga lalaking contestant sa willie of fortune magsasabi ng i love you sa nanay and tatay nila on air..i must admit na ako d ako vocal sa pagsasabi ng gnon sa aking mga parents...den one tym naobserve ko din kasi me bisita ako sa apartment and nanood siya ng eat bulaga...bakit parang ung concept ng wowowee e ginagaya nila..ung mga Pinoy TV subscribers din nila pinababati din nila on air and me ngbibigay na din ng mga dollars...im not saying it is bad...but for a legendary show...make a brilliant idea na matagal na nila namang nagagawa, huwag gumaya sa baguhan pa lang... And isa pa..khit saan ako magpunta e kalat na ang fever ng Boom Tarat Tarat at ang mga bata sa na naglalaro e iyon ang kinakanta, ang nag iiwi ng mga baby hehe... and even sa txt messages i received 4 txt messages yata na iba iba pero ginagmit ung boom tarat tarat hehe...same with deal or no deal..madalas ako makarecv dn ng messages na gmit ung salita na ito and even sa conversation ng khit sino....
About sa pagiging number 1 sa buong Pilipinas... matagal na naman na number 1 ang ABS CBN sa buong Pilipinas kahit pa naging number 1 ang kabila sa MEGA MANILA! Hindi naman na kasi kelangan ipagyabang yun eh ..No need to fight over it...

About sa nageexplain sa statistics na kapuso na ang avatar niya e ung mga babae na bida sa asianovelas ng GMA...im sorry to be biased... hindi naman siguro kailangan ng mga kapamilya dito sa thread na ito ang explanation mo kahit pa nong tym na nangungulelat ang rating ng shows ng ABS sa mega manila, ang sentro pa rin naman ng usapan dito e ung shows ng ABS and it is also true na masaya kami pag nananalo sa rating game ang shows na pinapanood namin, but regardless of the ratings na yan..ke panalo o talo... we still watch it and enjoy it ...siguro sa GMA thread mo na lang sna ipi nost iyan... hindi ko nga lang alam kung me kapamilya kami na nagpopost sa Kapuso thread kasi di naman ako pumupunta o sumusilip don pero para sa akin...hahanap pa ba ako ng ibang thread kung dito sa thread na ito e at home na ako at enjoy pa sa conversations ng mga ka co kapamilya ko d2... kaso i can't help but bothered pag me umeextra d2 buti sna kung harmless pero bad worded pa ung iba...hehe wala lang ... peace! im not triggering a fight...

About awards ok lang... no comment but i was very anticipated sa magiging resulta ng Asian TV Awards kasi ngkatotoo ung kutob ko na manonominate ang TV Patrol World for best news program feat. ULTRA Stampede kasi i saw it tlaga na napaka balance ng ginawa nilang pagrereport don considering na ang liable sa case na un e ang company na nagpapalabas ng TV Patrol... even sa iba pang news fair ang pagdedeliver nila ... remember ung ininteview si Sec.Puno and si Makati Mayor Binay few weeks ago...ang galing halos may tensyong namumuo na between the two, pero nahandle and na end and usapan ng maayos and fair ang pagbibigay ni Ted Failon ng chance na makapagbigay ng opinion ang both sides... kaya im happy that they're winning over its competitor...Nice Job!!!

ABS-CBN leads GMA 7 in viewership share


ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. leads the nationwide television viewership share against rival GMA Network Inc., according to AGB Nielsen Media Research (Philippines) nationwide survey released Thursday.

The AGB Nielsen’s first nationwide urban television audience measurement (NUTAM) shows that ABS-CBN’s 43-percent viewership share put the company ahead of rival GMA Networks Inc., which garnered 35.2-percent rating, during the survey period October 8 to October 13.

NUTAM is an expansion of the current AGBNMR panel installation in Metro Manila homes. Using the on-line “peoplemeter,” it provides a total picture of television viewership in the entire Philippines through 24-hour monitoring of the panel homes.

A total of 1,500 panel homes will represent a universe of 7.26 million national urban TV homes from the following areas: North and Central Luzon with 300 homes; Metro Manila, 400 homes; South Luzon, 300 homes; Visayas, 300, homes; and Mindanao, 200 homes.

The survey also disclosed that ABS-CBN led audience rating in North and Central Luzon with 40 percent; Visayas, 57.3 percent; Mindanao, 62.2 percent; Metro Cebu, 55.2 percent; Metro Davao, 57.7 percent; and Iloilo with 50.6 percent.

On the other hand, GMA led in areas in Metro Manila, with 40.6 percent compared to ABS 35.2 percent and in Southern Luzon of 38.3 percent versus rival’s 35.2 percent.

Maya Reforma, AGBNMR (Philippines) general manager, explained that the expansion provides comprehensive and relevant high-quality data for business and nation building and strengthens the Philippines’ development surge.

The AGB Nielsen said Luzon registered the highest TV ownership at 92 percent and cable ownership at 23 percent.

The survey also shows that the Visayas has the largest chunk of class E at 29 percent and the most number of homes with children at 64 percent, with Mindanao hugging has the largest chunk of class D at 60 percent and the most number of families.

In a related development, AC Nielsen said that for the first half of the year, TV advertising expenditures amounted to P22.6 billion; radio advertising, P4.93 billion; and print, P966 million.

The top TV advertisers are Unilever Philippines with P5.01 billion; Procter & Gamble, P4.9 billion; Nestlé, P3.3 billion; United Laboratories, P2.2 billion; Smart Communications Inc., P971 million; Fortune Tobacco, P855 million; Johnson & Johnson, P859 million; Wyeth, P827 million; and Globe, P783 million.

In radio, the top advertisers are Unilab, Unilver, Fortune, F&G, Tanduay, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes, Nestlé, San Miguel, Colgate and Petron.

Jay G. Bautista, AC Nielsen executive director, said the strong performance of the economy is the one factor of the rising media spending. “They are confident that consumers can buy a certain product,” he explained.

Jerico Barrera, AC Nielsen associate director, however, noted that the gap in the advertising level between television and radio is a function of cost per spot.

Barrera added that 60 percent of the total advertising money invested by advertisers in radio campaigns is in Metro Manila. “If we look at each area, advertising expenditure in the Visayas are growing faster than the other areas,” he pointed out.

The biggest number of ad spots of about 79 percent, he noted, was placed in Metro Manila and the rest in Cebu, 14 percent, and Davao, 7 percent.

The alleged butcher of gays was reportedly caught on a bank’s surveillance camera while withdrawing cash using the ATM card of the latest object of his demonic pleasures.

Police are now coordinating with bank officials following reports that the unidentified suspect had withdrawn cash under the account of the victim a few hours after the gruesome murder Friday in Quezon City.


Supt. Procopio Lipana, QCPD-CID chief, said an official of the bank confirmed that the man who withdrew the money was believed to be the suspect behind the slaying of Sierbo, 38, of Unit E, 77 Abad Santos St., Bgy. Sta. Cruz, QC.


Lipana said bank officials promised to provide him footages from the surveillance camera. He added that ATM cards were among the things missing from the victim’s valuables.


Police theorized that Sierbo was forced to give the pin number of his ATM cards to the suspect, erroneously believing he would be spared by the move.


“Posibleng nakita nu’ng suspek na nag-iisa lang ’yung biktima sa bahay kaya naisipan niyang pagnakawan. Wala siguro siyang makitang cash kaya pinilit niya ’yung biktima na ibigay sa kanya iyung pin number,” a prober said.


A source from the QCPD disclosed that a male hooker could also have been behind the gruesome murder. Neighbors claimed that Sierbo frequently had “guests” in his apartment.


“Madalas daw siyang may isinasamang lalaki kapag umuuwi,” the source added.


Police said they found lotion, alcohol and an unused condom on top of the victim’s dresser inside the room where he was found dead.

Former ABS-CBN exec named NBN-4 president


Press Undersecretary and former ABS-CBN executive Rolly Reyes has been named the new president of the government-owned National Broadcasting Network-Channel 4, ABS-CBN learned Thursday.

President Arroyo earlier placed NBN-4 under the supervision of the Philippine Information Agency after the Government Mass Media Group was abolished.

Under Executive Order No. 576, PIA shall now exercise supervision and control over the Philippine News Agency, Bureau of Broadcast Services, Bureau of Communication Services, Radio Philippines Network Inc. and the International Broadcasting Corporation.
