gusto ko lang mag-comment about Richard Gomez. I think this past few years mas naging mayabang siya. Nung kalilipat pa lang niya sa GMA, marami na agad siyang ipinagsasabing masama against ABS-CBN na malaki ang nagawa ang nagawa sa career niya. Let us say that 50% of the success sa career niya ay utang na loob niya sa ABS-CBN. He won't be Richard Gomez kung wala yung ABS-CBN na nagbuild-up sa kanya. Kung ako yung nasa pwesto niya, I will just be thankful of the 15 years ko sa istasyong bumuo sa career ko pero ano yung ginawa niya? Para siyang hindi nanggaling ng ABS-CBN. Kaya look at what happened to his career, wala na siya ngayong product endorsements samantalang dati ay magkasingrami sila ng endorsement ng kanyang career rival na si Aga Muhlach. Matagal-tagal na rin syang walang pelikula.

About sa issue kila Rufa Mae at Erik, bakit naman niya pakikialaman ang buhay nila? At bakit pati si Piolo ay idinamay niya? Kung tatakbo siya sa Bulacan for a public office next year, I think he will not make it kasi ngayon pa lang ay marami na siyang tinatakpan lalo pa siguro pag nanalo sya.

Ano ba ang kasalanan ni Piolo sa kanya at idinamay pa niya sa isyu na to? Kung magsalita kasi siya kay Piolo ay parang hindi niya ito nakasama sa ASAP dati. Kung bakla man si Piolo o hindi ay wala siyang pakialam dahil ang mahalaga ay ang contribution ng isang artista sa industriya nila. Sa akin, wala akong pakialam kung bakla si Piolo dahil ang alam ko lang ay isang magaling na artista si Piolo na angat ang talento sa mga kasabayan niya.

Malaking tulong na rin yung Pangako Sa Yo sa TV Patrol World kasi nakakuha yung TV Patrol last night ng 28.8 which is the highest since April. Yung KDOND, ilang beses na ring nakakakuha ng more than 30%. Matutuwa talaga nito si Gabby Lopez kasi maganda na nga yung kalagayan ng ABS-CBN ngayon as compared to last year.

Makisig Morales: Becoming ‘Super Inggo’

You ask for Makisig and expect a tall, dark and handsome gentleman to appear. Instead, out comes a skinny little boy about 4-feet high, skipping into the room to plant a sweet, soundless kiss on your cheek.

The name may seem inappropriate for this spirited tyke. After all, Makisig Morales is only 9 years old. But when you consider it, it may not be entirely inappropriate after this boy bested about 1,000 others to win the role of ABS-CBN 2’s newest super hero, Super Inggo, the same title of the television fantasy series that will premiere on August 28.

"I was very happy to get the part," said Makisig between bites of fried chicken. "I never dreamed of becoming a super hero.

"I think they chose me because I already know martial arts," explains this tae kwon do blue belter. Certainly, this super hero needs such lethal skills.

What first kicked Makisig’s door to stardom wide open was winning the monthly finals on ABS-CBN’s kiddie singing contest Little Big Star. This was followed by a slew of small roles on Nginig, Once Upon a Time and Maalaala Mo Kaya. Not to say he is accepted at every screening he goes to. In fact, when a family friend urged us to take him to the auditions of Super Inggo, Makisig expressed a disheartenment at having to go to yet another audition—again.

But life’s funny that way. When you hit the bottom, there’s nowhere to go but up.

Who’s your daddy?

Super Inggo is the story of a 10-year-old boy who is slowly, inexplicably discovering that he has superpowers. Not understanding them, he first hides his new abilities until he meets a man who brings him to a superhero academy and mentors him. When evil creatures abduct the woman he has always known to be his mother, he goes on adventures in an attempt to save her. Along the way he meets many creatures—both good and bad, natural and super natural.

Over the next 13 weeks, viewers will see the resurrection of comic and comics-based superheroes and characters popularized in the eighties—Petrang Kabayo, Super Islaw, Machete, Jessa Blusa, Super Inday and more—as well as characters from the Philippine folklore such as the tikbalang, manananggal and white lady. New characters will also be introduced such as Boy Bawang.

"We made them more mystical so that children watching the show won’t be scared," said production manager Raymond Dizon. The production team also injected Hollywood touches into the show, adapting a few ideas from Harry Potter, Sky High and X-Men.

Therein lies the twist of the story. Who do you think are Super Inggo’s real parents? You bet it’s Boy Bawang, don’t you?

Asked what his favorite part about playing superhero is, Makisig says: "I like being in the harness. It really feels as if I were flying. I’m not scared because they [the crew] never ask me to do anything if they know it will hurt me. I really enjoy it."

Korean star Eugene Kim thanks 'kapamilyas'




Korean actress Eugene Kim took time out Friday to thank her Filipino kapamilya with a visit to ABS-CBN, which aired two of her hit television drama series.

The actress, who gained popularity in the Philippines through Koreanovelas "Save the Last Dance for Me" and "Wonderful Life", delighted fans when she appeared on top-rated noontime show "Wowowee."

Waving and smiling to everyone upon her arrival in Manila Thursday morning, Eugene said: "I think [the] people are very gentle and kind... that makes me happy."

The Department of Tourism (DOT) tapped Eugene as publicity envoy during a travel trade mission in Seoul, South Korea last June.

"Kim was picked because she fits the demographics of our target market: the honeymooners and young single people or those with families who are all looking for holiday destinations," Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said during the event.

The DOT said Eugene's scheduled visits to tourist spots in the country will be covered by a Korean TV network and print media to further promote the Philippines in her country.

15 talented young men and women were chosen from various provinces to be a part of PDA.


Here are the 15 Regional Star Dreamers:



Regional Star Dreamer#1 Geoff Taylor is a 20 yr. old model from Cagayan Valley. He performed his original composition titled “True To You”.



Regional Star Dreamer#2 Gianna Marie “Iya” Ginez is a 21 yr. old college student from Pangasinan. Will she be able to put her deep voice to good use?



Regional Star Dreamer#3 Carla Marie “Inkay” Macera is a registered nurse from Naga City. In spite of her good singing voice she still needs to work on it as she has the tendency to sound “mahina”.



Regional Star Dreamer#4 Rutchell “Chell” Barbejo is a 24 yr. old lounge singer from Cebu City. She also sidelines as a reseller of beauty products and hopes of finally being able to find her own singing style through the Academy.



Regional Star Dreamer#5 Davey Ryan Langit is 19 yr. old soloist who hopes to finally be able to prove himself to his mother. He and Yvan are good friends from Baguio.



Regional Star Dreamer#6 Yvan Lambatan is a 24 yr. old vocalist for the band, Blaze of Harmonics. This young dad hopes to make something of himself with the help of the Academy.



Regional Star Dreamer#7 Emigdio “Migs” Del Socorro is a 23 yr. old Customer Service Representative from Cebu City. He’s not ashamed of admitting that he’s a “mama’s boy” and hopes to improve on his skills through the Academy.



Regional Star Dreamer#8 Handrew Sincero is a 27 yr. old single dad from Cebu. While his wife works in the U.S., he takes care of their daughter while doing hosting gigs on the side. He hopes to become a better performer.




Regional Star Dreamer#9 Mariaangela Solei “Panky” Trinidad is a 20 yr. old rock band vocalist from Cebu. In spite of her good voice, she tends to get absorbed in the moment and loses control of her voice. She performed “Impromptu” a song that she made herself.



Regional Star Dreamer#10 Eduardo “Jay-R” Siaboc, Jr. is the 19 yr. old vocalist for the band Scrambled Eggs. This Viz-rocker’s tenor vocal range may help him get in the Academy. He performed one of his band’s original songs titled, “Hilot”.



Regional Star Dreamer#11 Mae Lorraine “Minggay” Feliciano is a 20 yr. old nursing grad from Bacolod City. After receiving so many letdowns in her life, passing the PDA auditions is a fresh start for her. She hopes to improve on her “old-fashioned” voice.



Regional Star Dreamer#12 Allegria Ruth “Rhea” Abello is a 21 yr. old assistant secretary at the Mayor’s office in Bacolod. This former band member needs to work on her tendency “na mawala sa tyempo”.



Regional Star Dreamer#13 Charisse Mari “Chai” Fonacier is a 20 yr. old vocalist for an ethnic band. This Cagayan De Oro native needs to explore some more when it comes to her music.



Regional Star Dreamer#14 Emmanuel “Eman” Abatayo is a 21 yr. old vocalist for the band Quatro Qantos. A native of Iloilo, he’s not ashamed of being adopted and is proud that his family has always treated him well. He performed on of his original compositions titled “Waiting List”.



Regional Star Dreamer#15 Honorah Mary Ruth “Oona” Baretto is a 23 yr. old preschool teacher from Bukidnon. She comes from a family of artists but she’s having difficulty showing off her soprano voice due to being “lagging kabado”.



Meanwhile, four more talented individuals were given the chance to pursue their dream by being part of the 11 Global Star Dreamers who are hoping to become one of the 16 PDA scholars.

In the second part of U Can Dance’s season ender, 6 pairs of Celebrity Showdancers battled it out to earn the coveted title. Celebrity Showdancers Nene Tamayo & Anthony Plamio; Jenny Miller & Ely Damasin; Hazel Ann Mendoza & Bhong Tan; AJ Dee & Gelai Aguzar; Arron Villaflor & Nesh Janiola; and Maoui David & Celso Andres tried to impress not only the celebrity judges but the 2 special guest celebrity judges as well. Two of the Philippines’ original dancing queens, the Diamond Star Maricel Soriano and the Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos lend a helping hand to Maribeth Bichara, Alma Moreno and Jhong Hilario in picking out last Sunday’s winning pair.

After the contestants showed off their dancing moves in 6 intense dance numbers the celebrity judges all had a hard time trying to pick out the winner.


PBB Season 1 Grand Champion Nene Tamayo and her partner Anthony Plamio were given the texters’ choice award but unfortunately were sent home together with Wildcard pair Maoui David and Celso Andres.

A "Jack of All Trades" but definitely NOT a Master of None, Ketchup is the comedian, host and actor to contend with.



ABS-CBN Star Magic artist Michael "Ketchup" Eusebio is now reaping the fruits of his patience and hard work. He recently bagged the Best Supporting Actor Award from the Gawad Urian for his exceptional performance as Pogi in digital movie, Sa Aking Pagkakagising Mula Sa Kamulatan. He personally accepted the award and considers that night the most memorable in his entire life. He admitted that a nomination from a reputable award-giving body such as the Gawad Urian was enough reason to celebrate. He is very thankful for everyone who have been very supportive of his career especially ABS-CBN Star Magic.



Unknown to many, Ketchup is one of the busiest Star Magic artists. After the movie White Lady, he is now shooting a movie under Regal Films entitled Binibini which will also star Alfred Vargas, Katrina Halili, Gabb Drilon and Say Alonzo. He is also slated to be part of Joel Lamangan’s movie (also under Regal Films), a movie with Star Cinema and an independent film under the helm of Ms. Cathy Camarillo. In October, Ketchup is scheduled to do a play entitled Sabado sa Sam’s where he’ll be working with his Berks friends namely Cholo Barretto and Glaiza de Castro. A Star Cinema favorite, he was part of the cast of Can This Be Love and Mr. Suave. He is also busy with his weekly schedules taping for It’s A Guy Thing where he is one of the hosts along with Bubbles Paraiso, Borgy Manotoc, John Joe Joseph and Bernard Palanca.

Jim Paredes not giving up on RP



Singer-songwriter Jim Paredes on Monday scored a Philippine Daily Inquirer article that said he had given up on the Philippines after immigrating to Australia.

He said he told a PDI reporter that he felt frustrated with Philippine politics "but to say I have given up on the Philippines is to put it mildly, a naked lie."

Paredes, one third of the popular Apo Hiking Society, was one of the most vocal critics of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos. In 1989 he returned his green card to the American embassy, saying that he wanted to help preserve the gains of the 1986 EDSA Revolution while staying in the Philippines.

Last March he immigrated with his wife, three kids and two-year-old granddaughter to Sydney.

The first two paragraphs in the August 20 PDI report "Finally, Apo’s Jim Paredes gives up on RP" reads:

"The singer-composer who helped topple the Marcos dictatorship but years later gave up all hope for a better Philippines is doing just fine in his new-found home in Sydney, Australia. Five months into his new life as an immigrant, Jim Paredes is slowly becoming the face of a new set of overseas Filipinos, one of the many disillusioned millions who left the country in search of kinder, greener pastures."

In the latest entry in his blog Writing on Air (haringliwanag.pansitan.net), Paredes said he immigrated to Sydney for his personal growth and because of his growing frustration with the Philippine political situation.

"I said that I was tired. But not once did I ever say that I had given up on the Philippines. More correctly, I have always said I would fight another day," he said in the entry.

"Everyday in Sydney, I wake up to discover the things that work well and wonder how we can do it back home," he added.

Paredes said he was very disappointed with PDI, adding that he did not know how the newspaper came to that conclusion based on the interview. He added that he was not "one to trash the Philippines just to feel good about migrating."

He also refuted two items in the PDI article -- that he was a member of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board and that Apo sang "Handog Ng Pilipino sa Mundo" during a concert in Melbourne.

Paredes said PDI has scheduled a follow-up interview to clarify the article.

TFC receives 2nd Promax World Awards

ABS-CBN Global’s The Filipino Channel (TFC) recently won its second silver trophy in the Promax World Gold Award at the 2006 Promax and BDA International Conference held in Marrriott Marquis, New York.

Often referred as the “Oscars of the Broadcast Industry,” Promax World Gold Awards signifies world-class achievement for excellence in television promotion. TFC received the honor for the concept and music of its current station ID (SID). The two-minute music video is TFC’s tribute to today’s modern-day heroes - the overseas Filipino workers.

The TFC station ID will be added to the permanent collection of media at the United States Library of Congress. Serving as a “snapshot of our culture in time,” TFC station ID will become part of a permanent record of living history - available to scholars, media professionals and the public as a resource for generations to come.


Ned Legaspi, creative on-air head of ABS-CBN Global, spearheaded the TFC Station ID project. A collaborative project between Star Records and ABS-CBN Global, the song “Lipad Ng Pangarap” is composed by Arnel de Pano, arranged by Gerard Salonga and performed by Gary Valenciano.

PEOPLEMETER SERVICE

Singing champ with Bell’s Palsy



For singing star Frenchy Dy, nothing can put down a champion, not even illness!
In a couple of weeks, Frenchy is on the road to recovery.
She is very thankful of the people who have given her help, from the doctors to the fans and friends who have and are still praying for her recuperation. Exciting na yung labanan sa ratings ngayon. One wrong move could bring to a failure. 3 shows na pala natin sa primetime yung nakakakuha ng more than 30% kagaya nung last Thursday. Deserve naman talaga ng ABS-CBN itong ratings na ito because pinagtrabahuhan nilang mabuti ito. For the past two years na hindi sila ang number 1, they are continuously finding for the right formula sa primetime nila. Well as we all know, most of their strategies failed since the last quarter of 2004 up to last year 2005. But 2006 has been a different year for ABS-CBN, although nandun pa rin yung pain because of the stampede tragedy, masasabi rin naman natin that this year is the turning point because finally nakuha rin nila ang tamang strategy to bring back the audience. The time na malaki ang lamang ng GMA against sa ABS-CBN sa Mega Manila ay di nagawang mabawi ang lead sa mga key provinces like Cebu, Davao, etc at ngayon ay bumabalik na yung audiences from Metro Manila. We just hope that audiences from the suburbs will finally go back to ABS-CBN again. Well, goodluck to ABS-CBN!!!

MISS na miss nina Uma Khouny, Jason Gainza at Franzen Fajardo ang mga dating housemates na sina Bob, teacher Raquel, JB at Jenny na hindi naging ka-sing-suwerte nila sa showbiz.

Bagama’t okey naman ang buhay ng mga ito, tulad ni JB na mula sa mahusay na pamilyang Magsaysay, si Raquel na may balak ng magturo sa ibang bansa at Jenny na may konting negosyo na rin, mas gugustuhin pa rin nilang kabungguan ang mga ito sa ABS-CBN o kaya’y sa mga proyektong ginagawa nila.

Nang mag-location ang Trip Na Trip sa La Union, tinawagan agad ni Uma si JB na dali-daling nag-join sa kanila. It was not only an emotional reunion for the four of of them, but a pledge of loyalty na magkikita pa sila lagi. Pati tuloy si Kat de Castro na “ate” nila sa travel show na mapapanood tuwing Linggo ng hatinggabi sa Chan. 2 ay nag-enjoy sa company nila.

Ipinagtapat din ni Uma na sumulat si Kumander Nene (grand winner ng orig PBB) ng isang mini-series na gagampanan nilang lahat (kasama din sina Cass, Say (minus Sam Milby na hindi na maabot ang kasikatan ngayon). Isinabmit na ito ni Kumander Nene at umaasa siyempre silang maa-approve ito. Ganun katindi ang bonding ng orig PBB former housemates.

Sa reaction ng tatlong kolokoy, mukhang totoo nga ang balitang break na sina Kumander Nene at Bob. Bakit kaya?

ADD the name of Joross Gamboa to the short list of hot copies (read: much-talked-about) this week.

Even if change is constant, the recent changes in the young star’s career have a touch of mystery and controversy.

First, the formal announcement that he and Roxanne Guinoo aren’t a constant coosome twosome anymore.

It seems that right after their team-up in Gulong ng Palad, the Kristine Hermosa-TJ Trinidad soap, had ended on ABS-CBN, the cooling off began.

It was sudden which caught everyone close to both unaware. But Joross and Roxanne won’t talk about it anymore. Last season’s cabbage is stale and stale news is not news at all. So?

Second, Joross is Star Magic’s entire protégé. He is not being managed by Jun Reyes, his discoverer. For almost three years, since the end of Star Circle Quest, he was co-managed by Jun Reyes and Star Magic.

This fact carries with it some excitement and mystery.

As Joross tells us: "Okey pa rin kami ni Kuya Jun, pati ang family ko sa kanya. Iyon lang nagdesisyon ang parents ko na hindi na siya mag-manage sa akin. Sa Star Magic na lang ako."

According to the actor who works everyday in three shows at ABS-CBN, the "separation" was okey. His parents talked to Jun. No ill-feelings. In fact, they all agree that for commitments Jun would get for Joross, he gets the commensurate commission.

I gathered that Joross and Jun signed a management contract for three years, during the SCQ days. But it wasn’t notarized and now the parents presumably are questioning it. Joross is now 21.

The 21-year-old actor who’ll be 22 on Nov. 28 denies that this happened because of his "insecurity" over Gerald Anderson, another Jun Reyes’ talent. Not true, he insists.

Joross finds this issue funny: "Dahil sa akin nakilala ni Kuya Jun si Gerald. Nasa General Santos City kami noon. May lumapit sa akin na gustong mag-picture.

"Si Gerald pala iyon at ang grupo niya. Napansin ko ang mukha niya at ang tangkad niya kaya sinabi ko kay Kuya Jun. In fact, ang ibang kakilala kong gusto pumasok sa showbiz nire-refer ko kay Kuya Jun."

Now, life and his career goes on for Joross: "In constant contact pa rin kami ni Kuya Jun dahil may mga commitments ako ngayon na tanggap pa niya noon. Sana close pa rin kami from now on."

Joross – who belongs to the batch of Hero Angeles, Sandara Park and Roxanne Guinoo in the Star Circle Quest of 2004 – works almost everyday.

He is taping for the new action series Rounin of the ABS-CBN network, which is being line-produced by Dondon Monteverde and directed by Erik Matti. Joross is with Shaina Magdayao, Rayver Cruz and Diether Ocampo. His taping days are pegged on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

In At Home Ka Dito, with Charlene Gonzales, he tapes every Tuesday for the Sunday morning show. He keeps his Sunday open for ASAP 2006.

He has Thursday and Saturday for other commitments. Last time, he did the Cleopawak episode for Komiks.

In his tree-year showbiz career, he has done two films, D’Anothers with Joyce Bernal and Can This Be Love with Joey Reyes. The eldest of three children, Joross has bought a new residence at BF Homes, Parañaque recently.

"It’s a big house with eight rooms," he confides.

FPJ, Sharon top survey on favorite stars

In a recent survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations, the King of Philippine movies and former Presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr. topped the list of Filipinos' favorite actors.

Sixteen percent of the respondents chose the late actor who was recently named the National Artist for Film.

In the nationwide survey commissioned by the Film Development Council of the Philippines, SWS interviewed 1,200 household heads from June 22-28.

Megastar Sharon Cuneta was in second place with 9.1%
followed by Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. at 8%,
and drama actress Judy Ann Santos at 6.2%.

Robin Padilla landed in fifth place with 5%
while Star for All Season Vilma Santos
and Angel Locsin were tied in sixth place with 3.2%.

Comedy king Dolphy and actor Cesar Montano landed in seventh and eight place with 3.1% and 2.5% respectively. Superstar Nora Aunor made it to the ninth place with 2.1%.

Nilinaw ni Ed Instrella, manager ni Cherry Pie Picache, na hindi lumipat sa GMA-7 ang actress from ABS-CBN. One project lang ang kontrata nila sa network at para lang sa Atlantika. Nagkataong libre ito nang dumating ang offer ng Siyete, kaya tinanggap nila.

May mga offer ding soap sa Channel 2 si Cherry Pie, kaya lang, nasasabay lagi sa pelikula at ’di nito magawa. Dagdag pa ni Ed, in-offer din si Cherry Pie sa I Luv NY at Captain Barbell (secret kung ano’ng role), pero hindi natanggap dahil may ginagawang pelikula.

Sa ngayon, ayaw munang magpelikula ni Cherry Pie, kaya makapagku-concentrate sa Atlantika, na magpa-pilot sa September 25, kapalit ng Majika.

Gagampanan ni Cherry Pie ang role ni Remedios, ina ni Amaya, na ’di pa alam kung sino kina Iza Calzado, Isabel Oli, Valerie Concepcion at Katrina Halili ang magpu-portray.

Pero ang alam namin, Cielo ang pangalan ni Iza, kaya sa tatlo na lang kayo manghula kung sino ang magiging Amaya.

Nagulat kami sa sobrang closeness ng 38 finalists para sa bagong reality show ng ABS CBN, ang Pinoy Dream Academy dahil parang matatagal na silang magkakakilala ganung sa Cebu lamang sila nagkita-kita. Dito gaganapin ang pagpili sa 16 scholars na papasok sa loob ng akademya sa Linggo, August 27.

Kasabay naming pumunta ng Cebu thru Super Ferry ang 27 finalists from the National Capital Region, Global at ‘Regional para sa kick-off na gaganapin dito sa Sabado. Sobrang pinaghahandaan ang bawa’t production numbers ng mga dreamer.

Alas otso na ng gabi nu’ng Martes nang dumaong ang barko sa pier ng Cebu at nakakagulat dahil nakaabang doon ang 11 finalists na talagang may kanya-kanyang pasalubong sa kapwa nila PDA finalists at nang tanungin namin kung magkakakilala sila ay sinagot kaming hindi raw, first time nilang magkikita-kita.

"Natanim na sa utak namin na hindi competition ang ipinunta namin kundi ang masayang camaraderie, lahat kami hindi na kalaban ang tingin sa isa’t isa kundi pamilya na.

"Nasa utak namin na pagandahin ang production number namin, ke sino ang matalo o pumasok sa loob ng academy, masaya na kami for each other, the fact na napasama kami sa 38 finalists from all over the world ay isa nang accomplishment," pahayag ng isang finalist na nakitaan namin ng galing, si Slyde, isang freelance talent na naging DJ pa ng isang radio station at rumaraket as host sa mga shows.

Hindi na iniisip ni Slyde, ang pinaka-kuya ng mga dreamers, na manalo siya dahil deretsahan niyang sinabing, "Handa na akong umuwi, hinihintay na ako ng pamilya ko."

Halos lahat nang nakausap naming finalist ay iisa ang sinasabi, "Hindi kami sure kung papasa, pero sana kasi nandito na kami... or, we’re hoping to get in to the finals." Maliban sa isang finalist, si Ronnie Liang, ang kontrobersyal na grand finalist ng Pinoy Pop Superstar na na-disqualify dahil nalamang may manager na.

Nagulat kami sa sinabi ni Ronnie sa amin, "I have a strong feeling na makakapasok ako sa academy. Isa ako sa magiging 16 scholars, kasi base sa nakikita ko, hindi naman ako nahuhuli kasi I have naman a talent to show, ang mahigpit ko lang nakikitang makakalaban ay si Slyde, kasi buo ang boses niya, maganda ang timbre."

Bilib naman kami sa guts ni Ronnie para sabihing makakasama siya sa 16 scholars at sabi nga niya, "Hindi naman po ako siguro makakarating sa kinalalagyan ko ngayon kung wala akong chance."

Pero ang maganda kay Ronnie, very apologetic siya sa GMA7 dahil aminado siyang nagkamali siya sa hindi niya pagsasabing may manager siya at malaking pasalamat din niya sa naturang istasyon dahil nagkaroon siya ng exposure at maski paano ay nakilala na siya.

Na-challenge kami kay Ronnie kaya aabangan namin sa Sabado ng gabi kung ka-join nga siya sa 16 scholars at pag nakapasa siya, puwede naming sabihing, malaki nga ang tsansa niya as the grand winner for PDA. * * *Mukhang nangangarag na rin ang GMA 7 dahil sa Linggo ay ia-announce sa programang SOP ang auditions para sa Starstruck 4 at say nga mismo ng GMA staff na kausap namin, "Masyadong maingay kasi ang PDA," kaya hayan, sasabayan nila para by February next year, halos magkakasabay sila ng Pinoy Big Brother season 2.

Dagdag pa, "May pa-auditions para sa Love to Love last Monday, pinakakanta at pinasasayaw at the same time, hinihikayat na rin para sa Starstruck auditions."

Oo nga, kailangan na talagang mag-ingay ng Siete dahil last Sunday ay taob lahat ang shows nila sa ratings, maliban sa All Star K, The 1,000,000 Videoke Challenge. Number one ang ABS-CBN last Sunday in terms of ratings.

SA telebisyon lang namin napanood ang grand finals ng U Can Dance ng ABS-CBN last Sunday. Isa si Jenny Miller kasama ang kanyang dancing partner sa pumasok sa grand finals.

Nagkaroon ng mara-ming pasa sa tuhod at nag-kabali-bali ang kamay ni Jenny habang naghahanda para sa grand finals. Mas-yadong naging matindi ang expectations sa kanya ng tao dahil kilala na siya bilang isang showgirl .

“Siyempre, people will expect something new from me kasi alam nila na nagsasayaw na rin ako kahit papaano. Kaya lang, tao lang ako, may mga limitasyon din ako at mga hindi kayang gawin,” pahayag nito sa interbyu.

Sa kasamaang palad, kahit sobrang pinaghandaan ni Jennylyn at ng partner niya ang kanilang dance number ay hindi pa rin sila nagwagi. Ang pinakama-tinding kalaban nila na sina Arron Villaflor at ang partner nito ang naging grand champion.

“Salamat sa inyong lahat na naniniwala sa aking talent. Siguro, I will keep it to myself na lang muna, but I will never forget this experience,” text sa amin ni Jenny.

Without being bias, para sa amin ay si Jenny at ang partner niya ang karapat-dapat manalo. Mas matindi kasi yung degree of difficulty ng lifting na pinakita nila sa stage kumpara kina Arron at sa partner nito.

Para rin sa ilan pang mga nakapanood ng grand finals sa TV, mas gusto rin nila na si Jenny ang manalo.

Ang naging advantage lang marahil nina Arron at ng partner nito na ikinonsider ng judges ay yung fact na kahit mga bata pa sila ay nakakasayaw na sila ng ballroom. Pero kung a pahirapan din lang ng ginawa mas lamang si Jenny at ang partner nito.

Samantala, masaya namang tinanggap ni Jenny ang kanyang pagkatalo kay Arron.

I am happy for Sa Piling Mo for getting a high ratings sa last week nila. We can say that the drama series will end with a high ratings which is actually higher from the ratings that it got from its pilot episode. If I remember it right, the pilot episode got 28.9%. The series have its own ups and downs in tems of ratings. It peaked to a high of 32.6% pero bumaba sa 22% by last week of May or by June ata yun. Ang nakakatuwa lang dito ay bumawi sila at last Tuesday nga ay umabot siya sa 31.7% ratings unlike yung Gulong ng Palad nun na kung kailan pa last week ay dun pa bumaba sa 28-29% at naka-32% lang nung last day nila. Sana naman by Friday ay umabot na rin siya sa 34% at wala palang commercial break yung last episode ng Sa Piling Mo.

The best thing about ASAP last Sunday is that they were able to treat their main guests, APO, very well at talagang tribute sa success ng group nila ang binigay ng show. Limited na rin yung mga song numbers ng mga star magic talents kaya kahit may segments sa show na maiinis ka sa production numbers ng mga talents nilang di magaling kumanta ay hindi naman naging masama ang dating dahil mas na-focus yung numbers na talagang na-enjoy ng audiences. Hopefully nga ay tuloy-tuloy na yung ganitong ratings kasi ngayon lang ulit tayo nakaabot ng higher than 30% sa primetime since 2005 excluding yung finale ng PBB season 1 last year which got 41% kasi Saturday night naman yun at considered ito as special presentation. What is important ngayon ay napapakinggan yung mga suggestions natin at marami dun ay effective.

It is nice to see Judy Ann and Piolo portraying mature roles. At least we can say na kung makabawi na totally ang ABS-CBN sa Mega Manila ratings, SPM will be one of those shows that contributed to that and of course Bituing Walang Ningning will always be in my heart as one of the best teleseryes in ABS-CBN.

About sa koreanovela, baka lie-low lang muna ulit sila. Di ba last year ay wala rin munang ipinapalabas na Korean series between the months of September to November. December of last year lang ulit nagpalabas ng Only You. So I guess magpapahinga muna sila pag-ere ng mga asianovelas.

Ang ipapalit daw sa BWN ay isang drama series starring Claudine and Piolo na may working title na Walang Kapalit. Some scenes will be shot in Australia. Kakaalis lang ni Claudine last week para mag-shoot kasabay na rin ng promo ng Sukob dun.

KUDOS: Adrian Ayalin of ABS-CBN’s The Correpondents bagged the top 2006 Lasallian Scholarium Award for his feature story on youth and education.

His Tugdaan was chosen by the judges headed by Bienvenido Lumbera as the best coverage of youth and education this year.

ABS-CBN’s Gigi Grande was also a finalist for her Kayod Eskwela and Text on Air. Tugdaan is on a high school run by Mangyans in Oriental Mindoro.

According to Ethel Ramos of Malaya and a report from TV Patrol World, Kaye Abad will indeed be on the cover of Maxim Philippines this September.

Kaye, who has a slimmer figure now, admitted she has agreed to go sexy on the cover of Maxim Magazine, the same magazine which featured fellow Star Magic talent Angelica Panganiban in her first daring pictorial.

Kaye said she felt that if Angelica, who is 19, can do it why can’t she. The 24-year-old admitted that she’s on a diet. She only eats tuna with a small slice of bread. She has also been doing workouts for at least two weeks.

The long wait is finally over. ABS-CBN's Pinoy Dream Academy (PDA), the Kapamilya network's biggest reality cum talent search, opens its doors to everyone on its grand launch, which will be held in Cebu Capitol Grounds this Saturday, August 26, 9:30pm and aired live on Channel 2.

This mega-exciting musical kick-off party will finally reveal who among the 38 hopefuls would make it to the final list of 16 scholars who will live, train and dream together inside the Pinoy Dream Academy and have a shot at becoming the country's next singing superstar.

These scholars will be training together to become total artists-excelling in singing, dancing and performing. Can they handle the pressure of competing with one another, proving themselves worthy to their instructors, co-students, the judges and the public?

To help the scholars become the total performer that they ought to be, Pinoy Dream Academy has gathered only the most respected and credible instructors - Maribeth Bichara (Dance), Moy Ortiz (Voice), Gretchen Malalad (Fitness), among others. There will also be language teachers and acting coaches. APO Hiking Society's Jim Paredes, who's a respected songwriter and artist, serves as the Academy's headmaster and Artistic Director.

"I believe in the person (referring to PDA Business Unit Head Lauren Dyogi, who worked with him in Tatak Pilipino, a show he is very proud of), who offered me this project," says Jim, who is now based in Australia, when asked why he decided to take on the job. "I also believe in the show's vision. And, through this, as a senior artist, |I would be able to impart good values to these scholars."

While there may be certain guidelines to help Jim in carrying out his job, he says he would also be guided by his own judgment. "There are 16 scholars but we also have to be specific. Kailangan din naman tutukan kung sino ang dapat tutukan para mag-improve pa ang scholar. This is a reality show aside from being a talent show so we have to be ready for changes," says the headmaster of Pinoy Dream Academy.

Every Saturday, the PDA scholars will have a concert in the PDA Concert Hall where they will be judged by respected names from the entertainment industry. These judges will choose five students who will be up for expulsion. Out of five, one will be saved by the teachers; while one by the students. The fate of the remaining three would be based on the public's support for them.

Pinoy Dream Academy will be hosted by Toni Gonzaga, Sam Milby, Nikki Gil and Bianca Gonzales. Toni, Nikki and Sam host the Saturday gala shows, while Nikki and Bianca anchor the nightly primetime and uplate versions of the program, respectively.

Lauren says they hope to discover the newest and most talented singers from the contest that auditioned hopefuls all over the Philippines, plus Japan, United Arab Emirates, USA, and Sydney, among other places.

The 38 hopefuls will be presented in Cebu, whom we already had the chance to see last Wednesday after the press launch, but only 16 will continue to try their luck inside the Pinoy Dream Academy house.

Movie-TV board suspends ABS-CBN’s ‘Correspondents’

THE MOVIE AND Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has suspended the ABS-CBN documentary show “The Correspondents” for three consecutive weeks or three episodes.

The suspension was announced in a memorandum dated Aug. 15 and signed by lawyer Paulino Cases Jr., chair of the MTRCB Hearing and Adjudication Committee, and members Katherine Vilar and Ricardo de Leon.

The offending episode was “Ang Pinoy Rasta,” aired June 26, which showed a father and son smoking marijuana.

The memo noted that the father even said smoking marijuana had no ill effects on his health.

Through their counsel, the show’s representatives asserted that the docu was not about drug use, but about Rastafari, “a Jamaican religious practice adopted by some Filipinos as a way of life.”

In a phone interview, Luchi Cruz-Valdez, network head of Current Affairs, earlier told Inquirer Entertainment that smoking marijuana was an “intrinsic” part of the Rasta religion.

The network’s representatives, according to the memo, said the offending portion had not been done in a manner that showed marijuana smoking as enjoyable.

The board pointed out that Presidential Decree No. 1986 “clearly provides that the board … has the power to approve or disapprove, delete objectionable portions … which in [its] judgment … are objectionable for being immoral, indecent and contrary to law …”

Valdez told Inquirer on Tuesday that the network received a copy of the decision on Aug. 17. “That’s why we’re not airing the show tonight.”

In an official statement, the network reiterated: “ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs protests the suspension … [and] stands by its editorial judgment.”

Valdez added that the network had filed a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the suspension in the Court of Appeals on Friday (Aug. 18).

“We hope to get the TRO soon so we can air next Tuesday,” she said.

Unfocused plotting is ‘John En Shirley’s’ weakest link

WEEKS AFTER IT MADE ITS DEBUT ON Channel 2, how’s the “John En Shirley” sitcom doing? We caught the Dolphy-Susan Roces-Maricel Soriano starrer again last Saturday, Aug. 19, and came up with this update view:

Maricel comes off better now, because she’s warmer and more natural, and doesn’t resort to the ack-ack comic delivery that used to be her signature shtick. Good, now she can concentrate on being believable as a wife, mother and office manager.

Dolphy does more energetic work than the phlegmatic performance he turned in during the premiere episode. That’s all for the good, too, because he’s now in less danger of being upstaged by Susan’s feisty portrayal.

Susan was dependable, bubbly and spirited last Aug. 19, but her character didn’t figure in the plot as prominently as she should have, so we were disappointed.

The people behind the show should remind themselves that getting Susan Roces to agree to appear in “John En Shirley” was a major casting coup, so viewers expect the veteran actress’ talent to be more productively used in the show.

At this point, it’s the sitcom’s unfocused plotting that appears to be its weakest link. Last week, the “story,” such as it was, was a combination of little gambits like John trying to find work, Shirley covering up for her brother’s (Vandolph) scam at the office and fending off an amorous boss’ advances, and En(carnacion)’s fetish for talking to her plants. Not very interesting, right?

Instead of these minor inputs, the show should focus on a major problem or issue that many of its lead characters can get involved in and exercised over.

More specifically, we’re wondering when the simmering conflict between John and En will finally manifest itself more overtly.

At the moment, they’re being relatively polite about their differences of opinion. That’s nice and civilized, but it also isn’t very funny or telling, so a more vital and visceral disagreement would spice up the show’s relatively sedate proceedings.

It would also be great to see Dolphy standing up to Susan, and giving as well as he takes from her. In sitcoms, spice is to be preferred to nice.

Final note: The running gag that is the matakaw and matapobre characterization of Susan’s daughter in the show has run out of steam and comic possibilities. Either give her fresher things to do, or—give her fresher things to do.

FOR several Sundays now, "The Buzz" has beaten "The
S Files" in the ratings. We asked some viewers why they avoid watching "S Files" and many of them say it is because they do not like many of its segments like "Chona Chikadora," "Chismis Meter" and "Chikamate Princess." "Hindi credible," observes one viewer. "Mas mabuti pa kung diretso na ‘yung hosts like Paolo Bediones or Pia Guanio ang nagbabalita."

"Also, madalas, ‘yung balita sa kanila, ulit na lang ng napalabas na sa ibang shows," adds another viewer. "Like ‘yung Iwa Moto-Jackie Rice suspension, nabalita na sa ‘Startalk’ at buong episode ng ‘Showbiz Stripped’ on Saturday, the following day, inulit pa sa ‘S Files.’ Luma na."

Naikwento ito sa amin ng mga taga-Super Ferry habang naghihintay kaming umalis ang barko patungong Cebu last Monday night.

Fresh from suspending GMA Network’s I-Witness, ABS-CBN’s The Correspondents and UNTV 37’s Ang Dating Daan and Itanong Mo Kay Soriano, the Movie and Television Review and Cl######ification Board strikes anew with the banning of the Joseph Estrada video Ang Mabuhay Para sa Masa.

The documentary is a chronological depiction of Estrada’s life, from his early years as an actor and his initial entry into politics as mayor of San Juan, all the way to post-Malacañang. It was “X-ed” by First Review Committee members Gregorio Cendaña, Lucia S. Orense and Herminio “Butch” Bautista, aka “Scarf” to movie industry folks, aka the father of Quezon City Vice-Mayor Herbert Bautista. Like his son, “Scarf” used to be pro-Erap, until … oh, well.

Anyway: In a badly written letter dated Aug. 23, 2006, to Mr. Rey David, producer, MTRCB Chairman Ma. Consoliza P. Laguardia said, “We have previewed the film material and it is our view that the presentation of the biography of the former President up to his ouster is commendable.

“The scenes from his ouster is in our opinion ‘may undermine the faith and confidence of the people in their government and/or duly constituted authority’ as the law provides, it is our humble recommendation that a second review is highly recommended as soon as possible.”

If material “which tend to undermine the faith and confidence of the people in their government and/or the duly constituted authorities,” may indeed be disapproved, ba’t di na rin ipasara ng MTRCB ang iba pang mga political talk shows where guests openly state that the one in Palace is a cheater and a thief?

After all, according to the narrow and rigid interpretation of the law, everything that’s uttered in Debate, Probe Team, etc., likewise tend to undermine the faith and confidence of the people in their government, hindi ba?

A second review of the material was set last Wednesday afternoon, where the Second Review Committee could have either overruled or sustained the First Review Committee’s decision. For reasons known only to heaven, the second review was mysteriously cancelled, with Laguardia deciding to simply wait for the producers’ formal written request for such.

Bakit kaya?

PD 1986 clearly states, in Sec. 4: “The second decision of the Board shall be final, with the exception of a decision disapproving or prohibiting a motion picture or television program in its entirety which shall be appealable to the President of the Philippines, who may himself decide the appeal, or be ######isted either by an ad hoc committee he may create or by the Appeals Committee herein created.

“An Appeals Committee in the Office of the President of the Philippines is hereby created composed of a Chairman and four (4) members to be appointed by the President of the Philippines, which shall submit its recommendation to the President. The Office of the Presidential ######istant for Legal Affairs shall serve as the Secretariat of the Appeals committee.

“The decision of the President of the Philippines on any appealed matter shall be final.”

Iwas-pusoy ang laro ng MTRCB.

The body could not approve the Erap video because it feared the Usurper. At the same time, it could not come up with a Second Review Committee “X” for that would elevate the matter up to the Usurper herself, and boy, oh, boy, that would make her look bad, if she sustained the “X” so soon after her henchmen in Congress threw out the impeachment complaint, hindi ba?

The second “X” would also have pushed the Usurper to appoint an Appeals Committee under the Office of the President, and naku, ayaw rin nila nito. If the MTRCB favored an Appeals Committee, its chair would have reminded Malacañang that setting it up was in order, as I did, in the short term that I headed the bureau.

The MTRCB earlier deemed the I-Witness episode “Lukayo: Hindi ito Bastos” “offensive” because it featured the Lukayo women of Kalayaan, Laguna, performing a 200-year-old ritual parading and displaying wooden phalluses during weddings. The award-winning show was meted a two-week suspension despite the program producers’ defense that the ritual celebrated marriage, where women were equal partners and male power was mocked by the symbolic use of the phalluses.

The Correspondents’ June 26 airing of “Ang Pinoy Rasta” showed a young man smoking marijuana before his father. It earned MTRCB ire because it seemed “to project that smoking marijuana is an enjoyable activity” when PD 1986 and MTRCB Implementing Rules and Regulations “prohibit the airing/public showing of scenes that tend to abet the use of prohibited drugs.”

The MTRCB ignored ABS-CBN executive Luchi Cruz-Valdez’s explanation that the docu was a study of the “growing subculture” of Rastafarianism, a religion from the 1930s where smoking the “sacred herb” marijuana is like being “filled with the Holy Spirit.” That it was aired at 1:20 a.m., and carried the “Parental Guidance” warning, was likewise of no import to the regulatory body.

Ang Dating Daan and Itanong Mo Kay Soriano were suspended for 20 days, after the Iglesia ni Cristo complained about host/producer Eli Soriano’s branding the INC the “Iglesia ni Manalo.” The Commission on Human Rights-National Capital Region holds the MTRCB suspension of the two religious programs as a gross violation of Soriano’s human rights: Did the MTRCB care? Not at all.

Neither will the MTRCB give a ###### about public reaction to its “X” rating of the Erap CD. Like the Usurper it serves, this MTRCB believes it can bend and twist the law.

For whatever it’s worth, here’s something from my computer files, a piece I wrote when I was still MTRCB chairman, for another newspaper.

“Dec. 21, 2000: Several of what I presume to be press releases issued out by ABS-CBN have recently come out with regards to the alleged ‘X’ given to their musical special ‘A Christmas Prayer.’ I say alleged because material submitted to us for review is deemed final only after the second review kahit ma-‘X’ pa siya sa first review, which was what happened to the said musical special.

“It is true that the first set of reviewers gave it an “X” because they felt that ‘contents contradict the title ‘A Christmas Prayer’; a political rally against the government disguised as a musical presentation.’

Defining the Best Television Station

ABS-CBN deserves the Best Television Station award for its social consciousness, like the Bayaning Pilipino Awards. Gabby Lopez, Charo Santos-Concio, Cory Vidanes of ABS-CBN and Fr. Nilo Tanalega of Ugat Foundation gave out this year’s Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Pilipino awards to Soledad Katy, Eutequia Caber, Armando Edrozo, Sr., Ma. Corazon Tensuan, Juanita Arguel, the Doroteo Family in the family category, Aisah Minukon and Allan Sarte in the youth category, and Felipe Tolentino as Bayaning Pilipino sa Amerika. They are ordinary Filipinos who has done extraordinary deeds for fellow Filipinos. This is just a sampler. Other reasons are balanced and future-looking programming, the fast and accurate news delivery (the only broadcast station that regularly uses helicopters for news coverage) and a pro-Filipino news program like Bandila.


Pinoy Dream Academy is sure winner

GMA-7 is pole-vaulting another Starstruck 4 to compete with ABS-CBN’s Pinoy Dream Academy and ABC’s Philippine Idol! As pointed out in this column, GMA-7 was not doing anything to compete, which is a killer in marketing terms. But this early, it’s Pinoy Dream Academy will lead. Why? Pinoy Dream Academy is offering something new, while Philippine Idol and Starstruck are not. Although Philippine Idol has the novelty edge, it will be perceived as a seen-that-done-that talent search. Starstruck will be the big loser. Can’t GMA-7 come up with something more original? Pinoy Dream Academy will be the big winner as it is a new talent search show with a tested competition system from Endemol, daily frequency, a to-die-for host crew headed by Toni Gonzaga, Sam Milby, Nikki Gil and Bianca Gonzales, and the tested team of Linggit Tan and Lauren Dyogi to orchestrate the whole event!

Hindi na pala talaga maibabalik ang reality show ng ABS-CBN na Star Circle Quest dahil sa mga nangyari sa winners nito.

Ito ang inamin sa amin ng Business Unit Head at VP ng ABS-CBN na si Deo Endrinal na dahil kay Hero Angeles ay nasira ang franchise ng nasabing programa.

"Nanghihinayang nga ako kasi hindi ko tuloy maibalik ang franchise ng Star Circle Quest because of him, kasi nga sa mga nangyari. Syempre hindi na magandang record ‘yun for the show," bungad paliwanag sa amin ni Deo.

In fairness to Deo ay wala raw siyang naging problema kay Hero (first grand questor) kundi yung ibang kasamahan niyang executives at staff.

Naitanong kasi namin sa nasabing executive ng network na kung sakaling babalik si Hero sa Dos ay tatanggapin pa ba niya ito?

"Honestly, kung bibigyan ng chance, gusto ko siyang bumalik, kaso hindi lang naman ako ang magde-desisyon, marami at yung maraming yun, lahat nakasamaan niya ng loob, kung baga, matagal na usapin yun. At kung willing si Hero na dumaan sa tinatawag na healing power, baka pa.

Hindi na pala talaga maibabalik ang reality show ng ABS-CBN na Star Circle Quest dahil sa mga nangyari sa winners nito.

Ito ang inamin sa amin ng Business Unit Head at VP ng ABS-CBN na si Deo Endrinal na dahil kay Hero Angeles ay nasira ang franchise ng nasabing programa.

"Nanghihinayang nga ako kasi hindi ko tuloy maibalik ang franchise ng Star Circle Quest because of him, kasi nga sa mga nangyari. Syempre hindi na magandang record ‘yun for the show," bungad paliwanag sa amin ni Deo.

In fairness to Deo ay wala raw siyang naging problema kay Hero (first grand questor) kundi yung ibang kasamahan niyang executives at staff.

Naitanong kasi namin sa nasabing executive ng network na kung sakaling babalik si Hero sa Dos ay tatanggapin pa ba niya ito?

"Honestly, kung bibigyan ng chance, gusto ko siyang bumalik, kaso hindi lang naman ako ang magde-desisyon, marami at yung maraming yun, lahat nakasamaan niya ng loob, kung baga, matagal na usapin yun. At kung willing si Hero na dumaan sa tinatawag na healing power, baka pa.
