now ... or for the past 3 years, 750 metered tv sets na lang ang basis ... and for these same years, gma is lording over these 750 metered households in megamanila.

i think major advertisers now are smart enough not to give much weight on the overnight ratings as evidenced by their continued patronage of abscbn shows despite what the megamla overnight ratings show.

it will be followed by their comedy shows ... then bandila.

I check the abs cbn thread regularly as i am a kapamilya. but it doesnt limit me from checking out other threads and reading things totally against the network i am extremely fond of. i kept my silence and respected that i was at a different territory. that is why i check this thead more often and read it with more detail. I knod if i agree with someone. But i dont go into a war if others have different opinions from me. these are friendly differences and these are helpful and constructive. afterall, we are all kapamilyas.

it is disappointing, that lately, this thread has been entered by some who deliberately insult our network right infront of our faces. people who try to pick on us as if we are not in our own territory. they repeated insulted the family that we love and support. i wonder why they cannot just reign at their own place and brag at their own territory.

i just wish they will stay where they belong and keep their number one spot. just leave my family alone.

Same sentiments here. I was really wondering why these people kept on visiting our thread when they have their own to tackle anything under the sun, on their beloved network. They don't just visit to read posts, they also negate posts.

Surprisingly, they're here to share their disappointments on ABS-CBN and admiration on GMA. I don't understand why. They have their own thread to tackle all these things.

I do check their thread, I've read a lot of anti-ABS-CBN posts, and guess what, mostly from familiar nicks/posters of other forums. I don't post on their thread because I have high respect on the forumers.

They can say everything against ABS-CBN, still, nothing will make a difference of what my preference is.

Let's be humble.

yup i am involved in theater acting and i am also a coach in a talent workshop but not in ABS-CBN. One thing I noticed kasi sa mga karamihan ng young stars ngayon is that hindi talent ang nagiging dahilan ng pagsikat nila but good looks. Kaya ko nacriticize yung acting nila Angel at Richard kasi pangatlo na nilang series yung pinapalabas ngayon pero ganun pa rin yung performance nila sa pag-arte, walang pinagbago, too lame. Judy Ann and Claudine had their flaws in acting ten years ago in their drama series but they have developed their acting skills as the series goes on and look where are they now, receiving acting awards. Di ba last year sila Judy Ann at Claudine yung magkalaban lagi sa Best Actress Award at pinaghatian pa nila yung mga award-giving bodies because both of them got 2 awards last year. Anyway, GMA has Dennis Trillo whom I think is very good.
wow! u must have the so-called talent and skills that's why u know a lot of things abt the elements of acting and probably directing too. pls inform me what award-winning body did baretto and santos win? are u referring to the much sought controversial tv star award org? so u thought trillo is good :) ... meron pala sa gma7? akala ko naman kasi wala ni isa. sorry, more often than not ... at night time, usually, i just like channel surfing until the time my fave shows on cable starts to air. to be honest, i don't religiously watch pinoy series ever since as what i've stated here a couple of years ago. kung baga lahat ng napupuna ko sa free channel bunga lang yon ng surfing at privilege ko sa industriya. :D

if it's not too much trouble for u, just a question since u are in the industry. i happened to see the sequence last night where pratts professed his love for geronimo in front of the audience. i would like to get ur analysis on how geronimo reacted. and what abt the blocking and the camera movements on the scene where palanca offered a contract to geronimo. i just hope u don't mind.

Sa issue ng ratings, talagang nagre-rely dyan ang mga advertisers pero depende pa rin sa audiencesng show kung saan sila maglalagay ng ads. Kagaya nga ng sabi ng isa rito na ang mga audiences ng BWN ay mga mature audience at babae, duon maglalagay ng ads yung mga sabong panlaba, shampoo, toyo, suka, canned goods at iba pang produkto binibili ng audience sa show na yun kaya kung mapapansin mo maraming ganung mga produkto ang nag-aadvertise kung drama series yung palabas. Sa mga fantaserye naman, mostly mga kabataan audience so duon mostly advertise yung mga hotdogs, canned goods, sodas, mga damit, produktong pampaganda at mga basic necessities ng mga kabataan.

I will just give an analysis duon sa scene na nagtapat lang si John Prats kay Sarh becaused I missed the other scene na sinasabi mo. In tems of acting, medyo malikot nga yung mata ni Sarah Geronimo kagabi although the facial expression is quite good at very natural lang ang reaction nya na kung sasabihin nga ng mga ibang critics ay di naman sya umaarte. The scene may be so cheesy that it actually worked na kahit nababaduyan ako sa eksena kasi ilang beses ko ng napanood yung ganun pero nakuha pa rin nya yung atensyon ko. One more thing na gusto sa drama series ng ABS-CBN is that it is simple. Maganda ang cinematography and they do not rely so much on extravagant locations at mga musical scores na di naman necessary to make such a scene na highlight o para lagyan lang ng kilig ang eksena. Definitely, the casting is very good and they do not rely on big casts kasi depende pa rin sa takbo ng istorya kung paano bubuuin yung casts. I take Mga Anghel na Walang Langit as an example, duon walang superstars na kasama sa casts but still it became a big success and became the highest rating program in ABS-CBN primetime even beating Sugo nung pinagtapat sila ng timeslot. The key to that success is yung chemistry ng casts nila because it can be seen na walang sapawan sa kanila at bawat characters dun ay makaka-relate ka.

In terms of advertisers, I may not really know it but sabi ng isang kakilala ko sa ABS-CBN, they have a regular meeting with the advertising companies wherein they will present as to why they should place an advertisement to their shows by presenting the audiences of a particular show and they were able to convince the advertisers to sponsor their shows. In terms naman sa talent fees at kita ng mga empleyado nila, di pa talaga mareresolve yan ngayon kasi marami pa silang projects na ginagawa ngayon like their transmitters at yung iba sa pagkalugi nila last year although nababawi na nila ngayon yung revenues nila ngayong taon.

Yeah. Hana Yori Dango is with GMA 7. This was first offered to ABS-CBN 2, but they didn't get it.

When ABS-CBN 2 contacted the supplier pretty last month, they were told it's already with GMA 7.

NAG-START na pala ang taping ng Crazy for You, bagong teleserye ng Dos, na pinagbibidahan nina Toni Gonzaga at Luis Manzano.


Last week of July hanggang August naman ang taping ng dalawa sa Barcelona.

Ang role ni Toni rito’y isang all around caregiver, at si Luis nama’y isang estudyante sa Barcelona. Makakasama nila sa cast sina Kim Chui at Gerald Anderson ng PBB Teen Edition, Joseph Bitangcol, Sandara Park, Pokwang, John Prats, Jason Abalos at Michelle Magdrigal.

Ngayon pa lang, masayang-masaya na ang grupo, dahil muling nagkaroon ng programa sa Dos.

In reference to the item which was printed in your column recently, please find below ABS-CBN’s official statement: ABS-CBN did commission the TV diary surveys conducted by Nielsen Media Research (NMR) in Cebu and Davao and subscribed to the Day After Recall surveys of Philippine Survey and Research Center (PSRC) in Iloilo. These are among the many surveys we commission from them regularly which also include TV viewing measurements in different areas like Dagupan, Legazpi, Naga, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos and Zamboanga.

Commissioned surveys done by independent and credible Research Agencies are an accepted and common business practice in the Philippines and the world.

NMR is a global leader in Media Research while PSRC is one of the largest Research Agencies in the Philippines. These agencies are recognized for their expertise and independence. Like other big corporations in the country, ABS-CBN respects the integrity of NMR and PSRC and hopes that our rivals can, as well.

ABS-CBN regrets, however, that some sectors cannot accept the results of properly conducted commissioned surveys.

We await the reaction of GMA- 7 on this reaction from ABS-CBN.

Excited na ako sa Barcelona......kasi mukhang maganda siya pero....mukhang matindi ang makakalaban nito sa Kabila kasi may pinaghahandaan na naman silang bagong epic na show........don't worry ganyang talaga ...since forte ng Kapamilya ang romance ek ek at drama na soap stick nalang sila doon huwag nalang silang mag fantaserye kasi ito yung nagpabagsak sa kanila sa primetime....

Pero I heard na ipapalabas na raw ang Super Inggo and I think....sana pinagtapat nalang nila ito sa Captain Barbell para maganda ang laban..pero since na shleved na ito for so long..eh yung curiosity ng tao malilipat na sa iba....

Of course may mukha na sila, may talent pa! Di kumukuha ang ABS-CBN ng wala na ngang talent, wala pang itsura. Dalawa pa lang yang si Kim and Gerald sa PBB Teen Edition, marami pang iba na may mga itsura at talent din. We also have Sam Concepcion and Makisig Morales who can sing and dance and also act. May mga itsura pa.

Oo nga pala, Congrats kay Sam Concepcion for winning being part of Miko na nanalong First Place sa Boogen Imaging International Competition. He is the lead actor of that short film together with his dad. He also won together with the other Playshop Kids as Best Folklore Performance sa Korea in a world tourism event there. Galing talaga ng Kapamilya!!!

Kung parehong formula yung gagamitin nila sa gagawin nilang series na kukunan pa sa Barcelona, it will definitely be a hit. I'm sure marami yung tutulong sa kanila diyan kasi andyan yung mga Pilipino sa Barcelona na handa silang tulungan during the shoot kagaya nung time na kinukunan yung Milan nila Piolo at Claudine noon. Malaki yung naitulong ng mga Filipinos sa Italy during their shoot.

Charo Santos: I choose my battles

CHARO SANTOS, ABS-CBN executive vice president and channel head, was discussing a favorite book, Bill Carter's “Desperate Networks,” when talks turned to "originality" in television.
Santos said: “The genres are [still] the same: drama, sitcom, talk show, variety, talent search. How you tweak it [makes the difference]. In the end, [success lies] in the way your show's characters connect with the viewers. It's in the writing, in the storytelling.”

Controversial

Inquirer Entertainment was reminded of a controversial statement from Wilma Galvante, GMA 7 senior vice president for entertainment, who insisted in a June 15 story that the Kapuso channel "doesn't need to buy [a foreign franchise and] to get other people's ideas."
The question begged to be asked: Can anyone still claim originality in the world of television.
Maloli K. Espinosa, vice president for Government, Corporate Affairs and PR, picked it up: "No one has a monopoly on originality."

Santos demurred: "Here come the intrigues … I read that story and all I can say is, more power! Kudos to those who can come up with original ideas. There is room for everyone. It's best to focus our energies on improving the quality of our [existing] programs. Kanya-kanya 'yan (We each have our own styles). Let's think of the best strategies for our respective networks."

Pressed to comment on Galvante's opinions, Santos said, shrugging: "She's my kumare (friend). The next time I see her, I'll tease her about that."

She said she was not easily provoked.

"I've been through a lot. It’s been a very painful journey these past two years," Santos said. "ABS-CBN went through a crisis, followed by the Ultra tragedy… At this point, I've realized that one has to choose one’s battles. You cannot just quarrel with everyone. I still believe that rivalry can be healthy; it doesn't have to be destructive."

But what is her stand on franchising?

"I'm all for it. If there's a good concept from abroad that could be a hit among our viewers, I don't see anything wrong … in tweaking it to suit our culture and the needs of our viewers."

She offered "Pinoy Big Brother" as example. "Abroad, 'Big Brother' is kinda soft-porn, but we've given it a different [personality]."

Since ABS-CBN couldn't possibly focus on sex, Santos said, "We centered on the housemates' personalities. You may nave noticed that the big winners of 'PBB' have all shown strength of character and courage. They stand for something."

And they're all women.

More resilient

"What can say? Women are more resilient, patient and nurturing," she said, laughing.

She volunteered that majority of Kapamilya loyalists is, in fact, composed of women. "We have a large segment of A-B-C females … those with purchasing power. Mothers decide what to buy for the home."

She insisted that "Pinoy Dream Academy," the latest incarnation of "PBB," was not cooked up as a direct competitor of another foreign franchise, "Philippine Idol" on ABC 5.

"'PDA' is based on Endemol's 'Star Academy' and TV Azteca's 'La Academia.’ We're getting the best ingredients from the two concepts, but we're improvising and whipping up our own version. We first looked into 'Academy' three to four years ago," she said.

The "Idol" franchise was initially offered to ABS-CBN, Santos confirmed.

"It was during the time of [former network president] Freddie Garcia, but we had some problems ... we couldn't make expensive calls then," she said, chuckling.

Kapamilya's game plan is to go global, she pointed out.

"When it comes to programming, we are addressing not only our viewers in the Philippines, but also Filipinos all over the world. And we're not limiting ourselves to TFC (The Filipino Channel) subscribers. Ten countries in Africa have bought our soaps. 'Pangako sa 'Yo' and 'Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas' are popular in Kenya. Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa are big stars in Malaysia."

Balancing act

She also observed that Kapamilya viewers in "North America prefer drama to fantaseryes."

"I need to constantly strike a balance between local and foreign audiences. Our prime time programming is a balancing act," she said.

Speaking of which, she reiterated that the network's initiative to move "Bandila" (the late-night newscast) to 10:30 p.m. was an attempt to "respond to viewer feedback" and attain balance—that word again—in programming.

"I believe that one hour of news (when viewers are still awake) within 20 hours of programming is not enough. Now, we'll have Current Affairs shows three nights a week. Entertainment took only two nights: Monday (for "OK Fine … Oh Yes") and Friday (for "Aalog-Alog"). This shouldn't be seen as a rivalry between News and Entertainment."

As overall channel manager, she said she was expected to see the big picture. "I value the same things as the News people: information and analysis of issues."

There are also trials on her career especially nung 2004 when ABS-CBN lost their glory in Mega Manila. She admitted that she really cried at those times wherein all of her efforts are not being recognized and almost came to the point of giving-up by leaving television for good. Then, sinabi ng anak nya sa kanya that winning is not important and his son added that what is the use of being at the top when you have not done it in a fair fight. I'm not sure kung yun yung exact words na galing sa anak niya that is his message to her. From then on, nakita na ulit yung Charo Santos na minahal ng mga audience and a very strong woman. Marami pa ring problems na hinaharap nya ngayon like the Ultra Tradegy and yung naghihingalong MMK sa TV but she still fighting. She is really the woman to look-up to at ABS-CBN.

As “CloseUp to Fame 2” swings closer to its inevitable conclusion, our CloseUp to Fame Seekers were pitted against the best and the brightest from local entertainment. Our southern belle Rina, who hails from Legazpi City, was all sizzle as she tangled against beauteous Jenny Hernandez of gag show Quizon Avenue; while Reb went ab-to-ab versus sensational poster-boy Luke Jickain. At evening end, however, it was another moment of sighs and goodbyes as Micah of Bacolod and Rina were voted out. Remaining teams are the Green Squad, Code Red, and Batch Blue.

After whittling away two finalists a week, the country’s hottest reality model search show on the air today was set to welcome back two deserving fame-seekers. Facing a series of daunting challenges, one pair rejoins the CloseUp flock to complete what will be known as the “Famous 8.” Making up the judges panel were certified hunk Paulo Paraiso, tv personality Amy Perez and discerning director Joey Reyes. At episode’s end, both Micah and Aimee sang their way back onto the judges’ radar – and another shot at fame and fortune as the much-coveted CloseUp Couple of 2006.

The title role is played by Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition’s Keanna Reeves, whose hefty bosom is obviously “aalog-alog.” She’s with her batchmates John Prats and Zanjoe Marudo.

From PBB 1, they have Jayson Gainza; and, from PBB Teen Edition, the new adorable loveteam of Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson.

Also in the cast are Pokwang and Korean comedian Ya Chang.

This is under the direction of Randy Santiago, with Edgar Mortiz as creative consultant. This is Randy’s first directorial job.

Is he capable enough?

“He is,” says Edgar. “He’s a good comedian himself and he is very good with shows with naughty themes, kaya bagay ito sa kanya.”

'Bench Fever' bawal sa menor de edad

Sobrang happy ang PBB teens na sina Gerald Anderson at Kim Chiu na kinuha silang celebrity endorsers ng Bench at kasali sila sa celeb models na rarampa sa Bench Fever: The Underwear and Denim Show na gaganapin sa Biyernes nang gabi sa Araneta Coliseum.

"Masaya po ako and I’m proud sa sarili ko dahil Bench ito. Kasi, di ba, ang Bench ang number one brand sa Pilipinas at sikat na sikat siya?

"Dati pa po akong nagsusuot ng Bench, kahit nu’ng nandu’n pa ako sa GenSan. That’s why I’m so happy na magiging Bench model na ako," nakangiting bulalas ng Amboy cutie na si Gerald nang matsika namin sa Bench costume fitting last weekend.

Paborito raw niya sa Bench models sina Richard Gomez, Richard Gutierrez at Sam Milby. Natawa lang ang bagets nang sabihin naming siya ang tinatawag na teenage version ni Sam.

Dolphy fans won’t miss him for long after Quizon Avenue ends in a month or so. Already in the works is a reunion sitcom for Dolphy and Maricel Soriano. Dolphy (as we all know) was one half of the popular TV tandem John en Marsha. And Maricel was Shirley, John and Marsha’s daughter. Since Nida Blanca who played Marsha has passed on, the new sitcom will now star Dolphy and Maricel. Predictably, it will be entitled John and Shirley. For Dolphy and Maricel’s sake, I hope ABS-CBN will give them a good set of writers and supporting actors. Para maging magandang-maganda ang will last as long as or long than John en Marsha and Home Along the Riles. Bert de Leon is reported to be the director of this show.

Have you ever sat down and seriously watched ABS-CBN’s noontime show entitled "Wowwowwee"? I always watch it whenever I have time. I am not only amused by the game show and its host Willie Revillame but moreso, the snippets of stories the contestants have to share with its audience. The contestants are people from the streets. They are vendors, helpers, drivers, street children, waiters, cooks, singers, dancers, beauticians, etc. Each of them has a story to tell and their stories touch the hearts of the televiewers especially the ones watching from abroad through The Filipino Channel. I know I may sound corny, but the stories of these folks really make us cry and sympathize with them.

This show actually exposes how Filipinos are suffering. This show exposes the truth about people. How difficult it is for a person to get a job, how a father tries his best to support his family of 5. How a child has to sacrifice going to school in order to sell sampaguita because his mother is the only one alive. How a child has to go to the show to try her luck in order to help her sister get an operation. How one longs to go back to the province with the money he gets from the show.

Mendicancy? Many people have attacked the show saying it only encourages people to beg. But right now it is the only hope they have. Where else will they turn to? Who else can they turn to? This show brings that ray of sunshine into the lives of the people. It is a sad fact but it’s true. If you carefully look at the behavior of the balikbayans watching the show in the studio, they are all ready to help and give. You can see how good they feel when they are able to share that hard earned money they brought from the US with our poor Pinoy brothers and sisters. When one professes his problems, like having to improve his roof because his home often gets flooded when it rains, a line of balikbayans were all ready to donate money for this person so he can fix his home. When a child narrated the story of her blind sister, the audience cried along and again a line of balikbayans were all ready to help. This show has become a venue for giving and sharing. It has shown to the world how our OFWs and balikbayans truly care about the Filipinos… That they sympathize with their poor brothers and sisters… the long lost culture of bayanihan in this modern day and age still exists and lingers in the hearts of every Filipino.

If you are against such a show that gives us happiness, joy and laughter even for a moment, then, you are such a "grinch". We wouldn’t have this much beggars in the streets if our government system works. Unfortunately, there has been something wrong with the system for almost 50 years now and no hero has been able to change it. What a shame. All have been building their empires with the people’s money and no one has had the courage to come to the rescue.

The participants going to the show would not be acting like beggars if our public facilities such as hospitals, schools, department of social welfare, public housing, senior citizen care, etc. were all working. The problem is that no one dares to dip their feet into the system to straighten it up. Once elected into office, it becomes a show. No serious work in done except for a few exceptional cases. * * *The Opposition Party has filed another bill to impeach the President. Enough of that, why not improve your own districts and work? Do you know you are working for the people and you are spending our tax money as well? Why not work on your own districts and build them? Show the nation how good you are and how you can lead. Stop yakking on TV, Congressman Francis Escudero. Show the nation how good you are as a leader. Show us how you can build Sorsogon. By doing this, we gain more respect toward you as a public servant instead of a spokesperson.

Where is Mr. Palengke? Have you checked the markets lately? According to my daga you just go to the markets during campaign season. Aren’t you suppose to be our hero to clean and put the markets in order? Have you visited Chatuchak Market in Bangkok, Thailand? Well, if you can get our markets to be as clean, organized and free from flies, then you are truly the people’s champ!

I ask the wives of the Senators, Congressmen, Mayors and other government officials to go to their local markets. Remember, the food you eat on your dining table come from these markets which are not kept clean. Make it your project to help improve it. It is fun to go to the marketplace and meet the simple folks out there especially when it is kept clean. This is the least you can do for the people who have voted for you. Leaving the work to the local barangay is not enough. They will not get the work done.

When your maids or drivers are sick, have you taken them yourselves to the public hospital to check on the conditions of the environment? I challenge you to check these hospitals out. Surely, you will not even take your children out there. So, just because you can afford the expensive private hospitals, no one will look into the improvement of the hospitals for the people? The Secretary of Health will not be able to do this alone – he needs your help!

A public servant who is sincere to his or her calling has a natural glow that shows accomplishment in his or her face. There is this inner satisfaction of a fulfilled dream not overtaken by pride or power but of humility and wisdom. Just like Willie Revillame and the balikbayans in the show, they have an aura of contentment as they feel good from knowing they have done something good to help others!

Last Two Minutes ang pinakasikat na pelikula ni Alvin dahil topgrosser ito sa Metro Manila Film Festival. Bida sina Jerry at Alvin sa pelikula at isang bit role ang ginampanan ni Paras bilang pari na nagkasal sa mga bida.

Ngayon, susubukan na rin ni Angelo ang showbiz. He didn’t make it noon sa PBB Teen Edition pero nakita siya ni Mr. M (Johnny Manahan) at pinapirma siya sa Star Magic ng one year contract.

Kailangan pagbutihan ng ABS-CBN yung paggawa dito sa series na to kasi nakikita ko na magaling sila sa ganito katulad ng ginawa nila dati sa mga pelikula na ginawa sa ibang bansa like Milan, Dubai at All My Life. Yes! It's confirmed! The hottest new love team will be having 3 new shows in ABS-CBN. They've only been out of big brother's house for less than one month and they already have 3 shows under their belt. I just hope that they will not be over exposed kasi in show business, over-exposure isn't really good. Probably, tama na muna yung 3 for now. One teleserye, one comedy, and a pilot episode of a monthly anthology.

Tsaka don't worry marami pa naman nakaline-up na movies ang Star Cinema di tulad ng iba na nagsara na yata ulit after a series of super flop movies na puro pa naman love ang tema. :D

One more thing, di lang solo ng Star Cinema yung pag-produce sa Pacquaio the movie kasi kasama nila FLT films. so kung may mali mali man dun, it is not only Star Cinema's fault. There must be also a mistake with the partnership with FLT films.

Sa movies nga pala ng kabila, di man lang nga matandaan ng tao na may ganun palang pelikulang lumalabas kagaya last year nung may pinalabas na pelikula na bida yung mga Starstruck talents. LANGAW lang ata yung nakapanood nun kaya lang patay na yung langaw sa bahay namin na nakanood nun. LOL!!! Kailangan pa yata na may kasamang big stars o di kaya Kapamilya young stars yung mga talents nila sa pelikula para lang kumita movies nila. Kasi sa movies walang ratings. Finally, halfway through 2006, a group is giving out awards. Better late than never, ‘no? Will the other groups (FAP Awards, Urian Awards, FAMAS, etc.) follow, hopefully not toward the end of the year?

I must congratulate the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) and the group behind it (the ARG Entertainment) for upholding this long-held "tradition" even if times are admittedly hard.

The 22nd PMPC Star Awards for Movies will be held this coming Friday, June 30 (telecast on Studio 23 starting at 10:30 p.m.), at the grand ballroom of Philippine Plaza Hotel, hosted by Ruffa Gutierrez and Boy Abunda with Anne Curtis as anchor lady.

As is the "tradition," Funfare is making its usual "fearful" forecast, to wit (only in selected categories):

Just a comment....

I enjoyed watching Cha-cha (Urong-Sulong) last week hosted by Dong Puno. It was an eye opener for me. I encourage ABS-CBN to provide more of these shows to its viewers despite the rating it got (or so I gathered).

Also, I was able to catch an episode of ALTK last week where a tagalized song was infused as background music. It sounded and appeared inappropriately funny and "corny". My younger brother commented: "parang responsorial psalm sa simbahan yung kanta." I've commented about this already in another site but I want to mention it here too since Jerry Yan's White Tower has an approx playdate of mid August (at least in Taiwan). Jerry fans (I am one) will freak out if they do that in Jerry's drama. I hope ABS-CBN will use the drama's OST or chose an appropriate song for certain scenes.

More competitive than ever

HAVE you noticed? New TV shows are currently being launched practically on a weekly basis—the better to capture viewers’ constantly evolving viewing preferences.

This shows how fiercely competitive TV programming has become, especially after GMA 7 caught up and then surpassed ABS-CBN in the ratings race.

Time was when the local TV program schedule had “strong” and “weak” time slots. For instance, would you believe there was a time when morning shows weren’t popular, and the early viewing hours made-do with “filler” programs that were replayed endlessly?

These days, of course, the TV schedule starts perking up at 5:30 a.m., with popular morning shows that field many hosts and features.

They are followed by local or imported soaps, then by women’s programs, noontime variety or game shows, afternoon dramas or old movies, early evening newscasts, game shows, telenovela galore, and late-evening newscasts and public affairs program—all the way past midnight! And, after only a few hours’ rest, the daily grind goes full circle again.

What has made television the liveliest and most popular medium of entertainment and information in the country today? The fact that it’s “free” is a major factor, of course.

Then, there’s the fact that it’s co-opted the major stars of the movie world into top-billing TV programs—ironically, thus hastening the decline of Filipino films.

The variety of shows viewers get to see on TV is another attractive feature of the electronic medium. And its fast way of covering and getting the news to people’s homes is yet another come-on.

This dominance of television has happened despite the fact that rates for commercials to be aired on TV have increased by leaps and bounds. Despite the high cost, TV advertisers still feel that they get value for money, because the medium attracts millions of viewers to their commercial messages.

But the shallow nature of many TV programs has restricted their long-range ability to excite viewers. Thus, the fast turnover of shows we currently see on the tube.

In the past, TV drama series took years to run their course. These days, if a telenovela is not a big hit, it can be rudely terminated after only one season or two.

This is because, in order to rate big, TV shows have to pull in many viewers. So, the cut-off point has been raised, even for programs that would have been regarded as hits some seasons ago.

As a result, the new shows we see making their debut on the tube from week to week are required to make a major impact fast, without the lead time that was allowed in the past.

This makes TV production even more nerve-wracking than it used to be, and has forced producers to resort to facile and shallow formats, and to steer clear of risky, “experimental” programs for niche audiences—to the dismay of viewers who want greater variety, depth and sectoral representation in the programming they get on TV.
