Lets turn her over for a reward and lets go over for a drink. hehe. He didnt even are for mei.
You know I love flirting with girls. naughty mood. Look at his eyes. Theyre flashing with mischief.
If I die under a skirt I can still flirt as a ghost. LOL.
If you impress me, I take you to a place where real flowers grow. I love this one. Perfect. Takeshi why dont you take me instead? LOL
I undressed you yesterday, have you forgotten already? sexy eh!
Just call me wind.
You prefer to start at the bottom thats fine with me. LOL. Tang dynasty china did naughty men like him already exist really?
You can read me like a book. there was sarcasm I liked it. He was oh, so lovable jus by saying that. No guilt whatsoever shes blind takeshi have a heart!
Im never shy around women. I bet you are.. but in real life, I hear otherwise.
Im sorry I was late. oh gosh! Playboys seldom do gentlemanly things. Its not in their nature but sometimes when they get to love youd simply appreciate it more.
Im not gonna take advantage of you. yeah right you wouldnt. but I see your eyes boiling with lust. LOL. Is this your way of seducing women youre good at it.
I though youre hot as fire. In fact, youre cool as water. but you takeshi are always hot as fire even if you display the image of being cool as water. LOL. I often wonder why God created some men like takeshi, who just stand there and do nothing, and still manage to look as handsome as ever.
I really care for you what if I am (for real) this time? see guys.. youd really appreciate it when playboys say these things and I mean sincerely huh. I hope this is true too in real life. LOL.
Dont worry. I never fail in seducing a woman. you bet! We were all made here on earth for a purpose. And I guess takeshi was built for this purpose.
What do you mean fall? Fall in bed? Hehehe those naughty eyes, that naughty smile is to die for. Kind of lusty but it works.
Weve come this far. I cant leave you behind.
Im a free spirit like the wind always moving.
Now you know why I am called wind. but then, I can see in your eyes that you love the girl jin. You just dont want to admit it.
I came back for you
Lets roam the world, you and me, just like the wind. ok. Takeshi. What else do we need. Do I have to pack your bags for you?
You and me. gosh! Catch my fall takeshi. That look is ust heart-melting. How the hell did mei get to refuse that. Thats the kind of look that would give you reason enough to go with him to hell, if worst comes to worst. LOL. Well, lets blame zhan yimou for now.
youre right. If I won, I would never let you go. Double meaning I might say. Yes. He wouldnt let you go.. no not to kill you mei. But to keep you, so you could roam the world together.

SPOILER ALERT!
1. The pull harder scene! I like his laugh he really is a ladies man with all those girls around him. Who would think in the slightest that he is gay? Or was it just acting?
I wonder what those girls are thinking of just being near takeshi kaneshiro?
2. The scene where jin is talking to the madam (and also the one when talking to mei) all of it. he had full close ups would you believe I viewed the scene almost 20 times already and still I cant get enough of that god-like face. hey, admit it guys that face of his is a deadly weapon. Honestly, im viewing it again while im writing this. LOL.
3. when he tore meis clothes with a sword. Look closely AT HIS EYES as if hes gonna eat mei.
TO SUM UP I liked the who Peony Pavillion scenes gosh theres something about this guy hes a drunken-maniac-ladies man-arrogant-jerk but what makes him so forgiveable and oh so loveable?
NOTE: he has the best close ups in this segment dont you dare buy popcorn or pee. Youll miss a fraction of happiness in life. LOL. Or was I exaggerating? Oh well, I talk too much.
4. what with takeshi always eating and eating those nuts? But hes cute anyway just like that eating nuts. (oh gosh! Im nuts!)
5. The face-touching scene! Hey mei are you blind!? Oh gosh! What did mei think exactly when he first saw jin. I think she was already attracted to jin way before.
For crying out loud.. why on earth would she ask jin about how he looks like if she wasnt blind in the first place! Maybe that was the topic that was playing through her mind all night long inside that prison. LOL.
I mean, who can blame her?
6. he walking around on those Chinese clothes turned me off he wasnt in character at all he looked more like a PRADA model than a carefree swordsman and prada wasnt around at that time huh talk about bad acting LOL
7. Gosh the physics-defying arrow scene where he saved meis life from those four soldiers. I remembered legolas o wait better than legolas much much better so sexy his face is virile manly perfect I could go on and on
Did I mention about that article someone wrote about his virile sideburns and very handsome face that damn journalist hated every bit of takeshi but still managed to describe him in that manner takeshi must really be an eye-candy
8. take not about how he pat her back he was a gentleman as if saying, dont cry, everythings gonna be alright if I was mei.. all my fears would definitely go away im gonna melt!...
9. The squirrel or koala thingy he was naughty huh!? So that he could watch a free movie of a lady bathing. That scene made me smile. I mean grin
Then he tip-toed like a thief in the night. Alas! Mei knew that he was there The offender wasnt even a bit guilty of his offense. LOL.
Is it just me or all of us drool over naughty takeshi. One of my favorite scenes actually.
10. that look that he gave mei when he saw her in mens clothes. Oh.. and the way he whispered in her ears and just the way he seduced mei with his voice, his fingers Oh gosh! TAKESHI ISNT GAY! HE MUST BE! HE COULDNT BE!
11. the flower picking scene how sweet was it really him who picked all those flowers while riding a horse? I hope not that was sweet but rather dangerous
Oh and notice his face and dimples when he gave mei the flowers just like a teenage boy giving flowers to the cheerleader. Cute and adorable too.
12. when mei asked him if he felt something for her. His eyes said a lot takeshi is a good actor.
13. outside the cave Cute face he got there. his eyes were rolling as if already losing patience. This is the part where a playboy say, ok, do whatever you want coz I aint going to run after you. There are many girls in china., this is a large continent. WITH THIS FACE, I can seduce half of the female population here. Go! LOL.
14. that look on his face when he is leaving mei and then ends up coming back for her. This happened twice. LOL. Nice. You can really see the conflict. The playboy who was reluctant enough to love but then what can he do and he cant just leave her alone and unprotected. Ironic but true.
15. oh that scene where they are caged in bamboo sticks. That was a good close up too takeshi.
16. the scene where he was forced in to marriage with mei. Hehehe. Look at the conflict on that pretty face. he seems almost reluctant, but gives in anyway. Deep in his heart, though a playboy, he is willing to give up his freedom for mei.
I think he agreed to marry mei not merely for the mission he already quit remember. Maybe the thought of settling down with mei made a lot of sense given his carefree existence.
17. the moment that he knew mei wasnt blind. Oh his eyes spoke volumes. Almost any woman would feel guilty if given that painful look by takeshi upon knowing that everything is a lie. Poor playboy getting a doze of his own medicine.
18. the goodbye scene. Watch eagerly as you see takehi flash his BOYISH SMILE. He looked like a two year old adorable boy in this scene. And the way his eyes begged mei to come with him is just just.
Iceberg right ahead. Good close-ups.
19. jins fight scene with leo. Blood and guts everywhere. I dont usually watch war movies coz im afraid of seeing blood But oh, never has a nosebleed become so cute and ever so adorable in my eyes.
This guy really knows how to still look cute when angry well I guess I find in his sexiest when he is in an angry mood.
20. the way he went closer to leo so as to save mei and sacrifice himself. Hes a real good lover. Only after seeing it for the 5rd time and reading the reviews that I understood that its was supposed to be heart-wrenching. I was busy looking at takeshis face to even think about the tragedy.
And take a look at his face-covered snow. GOOD CLOSE-UPS. He is absurdly handsome.
21. when he kissed mei. I think that kiss, though brief, was the sweetest kiss I have ever seen.. or was it just coz of takeshi whatever!
Im just here to tell you tat that kiss gave me goosbumps so gentle it tickles me. LOL

Sana nag voice lessons siya kung talagang katakot takot ang singing voice ni Takeshi. DI ba malaki ang budget. Bakit naman yong iba natuturuan mag improve ang voice. Musical parang di ko ata siya ma picture sa isang musical. BUt heck , I will watch anything with Takeshi in it. Face na face na lang sold na sakin.

Manga fans finally would be able to meet their idol writer ː^ in Taiwan. On Aug 13, he would attend the Comics Expo and would hold an autograph session. ː^ was interviewed and he said that his manga Black Jack would be made into a TV series and Takeshi Kaneshiro would be in the series.
As everyone know, ː^ is like a treasure in Japan. He is the son of Tezuma Osamu. ː^ was born in 1961 in Tokyo and his most famous work was to take his father's Black Jack onto the small screen. It became a family program and is very popular in both Japan and Taiwan. ː^ said that it has to be attributed to his father's superior medical background in order that the surgical techniques were perfectly described.
ː^ will be the producer and will be released in December this year at Xin Taiwan. And for the role of Black Jack, ː^ has for now Takeshi Kaneshiro in mind. He said that because the Japanese people are familiar with him but he is not bounded by nationality and so would be the most suitable person to play the role.
Actually, looking at Takeshi, he does look a bit like Black Jack!

Some takeshi news:
(9/9/2005) Peter Chan Ho Sun's new film PERHAPS LOVE gathers four great
Asian superstars: Takeshi Kaneshiro (Gum Sing Mo), Jacky Cheung Hok Yau,
Zhou Xun and Ji Jin-Hee and has always been the focus of the international
press. It even becomes this year's Venice film festival closing film.
Yesterday on the streets of Venice, the 18 foot by 9 foot film festival
version billboards of the four leads was hung high for international
jury members, viewers and locals to enjoy.
The billboard in comparison with the already unveiled posters in
color and character emotions. Chan Ho Sun explained that the last posters
stressed mystery more, thus the use of color was darker for audience's
imagination; now the posters are to make the characters stand out and thus
the use of brighter scolors stresses the modern element. As for the
enraged impression that Zhou Xun gave off on the billboard, Chan Ho Sun
said, "I felt it was very pretty! Zhou Xun in the film had several dozen
costumes, each was very pretty; as for why was this emotion chose, that's
simple. I feel that this is the most prettiest." The film is slated for
an all Asia release in Christmas

To kick off the movie Perhaps Love on December 8 in Hong Kong and to coincide with the Christmas promotions, the three actors, Jacky Cheung, Zhou Xun and Ji Jin Hee would be at the Harbor View City to officiate the Christmas lighting ceremony.
Zhou Xun who is very busy would take one day out and so would Jacky. And Takeshi who is extremely busy now working in the US, will not be able to attend. But he has made a duet with Jacky Cheung for this movie and the OST would be released in November.
Zhou Xun is excited about the lighting ceremony because she said, "All along I have wanted to experience the Christmas spirit in Hong Kong. I often heard how pretty Hong Kong is under Christmas lights. To have this chance this time, I'm really looking forward to it." In the meantime, to be able to see Jacky and Ji Jin Hee again, it feels like they are very close to her and she would like to sightsee with them.
And Jacky said that he looks forward to having Zhou Xun and Ji Jin Hee and he already have planned where to take them to for dinner.

Here is a bit about what Takeshi said.
Article: Ocotber 28, 2005

In House of Flying Daggers, many Chinese mainland audience already accepted Takeshi as a man of strength. Even though in Turn Left Turn Right, he is quiet sorrow did not bear tears. But in Perhaps Love, he has many scenes where he shed tears. The longest was one minute long. He was crying so sadly that even a lot of the crew members were touched. Takeshi said, "Lin Wei is a person who couldn't let go. I am also the type who couldn't express my feelings. This has the shadow of my past. And in the movie, the crying scenes were very important and all along I have been very afraid. I was afraid that when the day of shooting comes, I couldn't find the feeling. But when that day came, I couldn't even believe that I really cried."
Peter Chan said that this role was perfect for Takeshi. A bit cool and a bit angry.

For the Golden Horse Film Festival which will be held on November 13, the committee is still trying to invite Takeshi to the awards. Accordingly, it was learnt that Takeshi would be at a very far off place working and to fly to Taiwan would not be cheap. Plus Takeshi requires his own Japanese make up artist, hair stylist. The costs might be a headache for the Committee.
Fulong Management clarified that Takeshi is taking his vacations at the moment and during the Golden Horse film awards, he would be working but he won't be so far as to not attend. At the moment, they are contacting the party that he is going to work for to borrow him for the event. The Japanese image consultant and hairstylist is the same person for Takeshi. They don't have other requests and it would not create too much problems for the Golden Horse awards. It is really dependent on scheduling. Takeshi would also like to help Golden Horse and Taiwan.

Golden Bowl is the Japanese TV drama of 11 episodes launched in Japan in 2002. Takeshi played a stockbroker but in his free time after work, he hangs out at the bowling alley and there he met Hitomi, a housewife. The story went on to tell their developing friendship.
Watch how handsome Takeshi is in suit. And how sexy his exclamations are after every strike he scored at the bowling alley.

The magazine article says the following:
If, love has a form, so that we could see its ugliness, depression, its agonizing face, everyone may not want to jump into the sea of fire. However, without love, without hate, then what is it about being human? Takeshi Kaneshiro, even though possessing the qualities of an ideal lover, does not choose the 'want wind get wind' type of love, he would rather be the most foolish lover, doing whatever silliness the other wants. If, knowing he will lose to love...
In the fan's gossip files, no one knows the reality love story of Takeshi. But it's this feel of mystery, that adds to his allure. To be in a romance with Takeshi, how would that be? " I feel, everything we do for our lover is foolish, but so what, that is just a way of loving the other. Whatever it is, as long as the other person can understand and cherish, no matter how foolish it actually is, it is worth it."

Takeshi has always been low profile. Apart from making movies, commercials and promotions, he rarely appears in public. But in the virtual world he often appears. Earlier he was interviewed by Bazaar and he said that he often uses the name Takeshi Kaneshiro to meet with other net users but the net users wouldn't believe him and often said, "How could you be Takeshi Kaneshiro? Don't misuse the idol's name." He doesn't know whether he should laugh or cry.
Takeshi is a computer expert. Not only does he make his own websites, writes journals, he even answers questions from net users. Meantime, he also plays video games and he would treat net users as his friends. Once, director Peter Chen invited him to dinner but he has to decline because he has already set up a time to meet with his net friends online. It could be seen he views the net friendships seriously. Worried that others might think he is too engrossed in video games, he stated in the magazine interview clearly, "I have self control. If I play too long, I would tell myself that I should not keep myself awake during sleep hours and so, I should go sleep now."
These few years, he has made movies over Asiea and appears at international film festivals. The Japanese press said that House of Flying Dagger was his stepping stone to Hollywood and believe that he would be able to expand his horizon internationally. To this, Takeshi said humbly, "I don't dare say I'm an actor. After all, I started off in singing and then I entered the movie industry later. I believe I am still in the learning stage."

Takeshi arrived from Los Angeles Airport to Taiwan in the morning to attend the Golden Horse Award. Even though he is a big star, his character is still very youthful and he talked about Ang Lee. "Last time I got to shake his hand and I was very happy already." He liked to praise and Ang Lee was happy to hear it. Ang Lee said, "I am very happy too. He's quite a big star!" He also praised that Takeshi has grown a lot.
Takeshi, who is known for being elusive and loves to play video games, did not come into Taiwan in secrecy this time. Yesterday, wearing dark shades, wearing torn jeans and showing even leg hair, he sauntered out of the immigration control. When he saw the press, he even greeted them first, "Hello!" Asked if he brought along his PSP, he pretended to be shocked by the question. "What kind of a question is that?" Then he said, "Of course I did!" His expression was rather loveable.
Takeshi is an idol but he himself has idols too. When talking about Ang Lee, he was very respectful, "I bumped into him at the Venice Film Festival and mentioned about possibility of making a movie together but at that time I didn't think much about it. I was just happy to be able to shake his hand." In his dialog you could tell the respect he has towards Ang Lee. Ang Lee heard about this later on and said, "What he said made me happy. He's after all a big star." He said if he has a good script, he would be happy to work with him.
Not having been back to Taiwan, he was not aware of the happenings in Taiwan. When he heard that 陶晶瑩 Tao Ching Ying, Matilda was going to get married, he raised his eyebrows and was surprised. "What? She's getting married? If I have time, I would definitely attend." But he added, "But if I don't have time, it couldn't be helped. But I would definitely send her a gift. She probably minds more about the gift and doesn't mind if I'm not there. It doesn't matter."
From rumors, Takeshi was said to be studying in Los Angeles. Yesterday he denied it. "I just went there to visit a friend. I didn't go to a language school. I only went there to relax. Otherwise fans would be following me around." Was he practicing English to prepare to go to Hollywood? He said cooly, "Hollywood wouldn't mind the English of foreigners. It focuses more on the story and the choice of cast."

Perhaps Love? Perhaps Not
Director Peter Chan is no longer in love with making romantic movies, that is. The 43-year-old filmmaker behind acclaimed films like Comrades: Almost a Love Story and He's a Woman, She's a Man now says he wants to do something unfamiliar.
http://en.chinabroadcast.cn/mmsource/images/2005/10/17/perhaps-love2.jpg
(The film's leading actor, Taiwan star Takeshi Kaneshiro)
I've done all the love stories I can identify with, he says.
But for the moment, fans can still enjoy his take on romance in Perhaps Love (http://en.chinabroadcast.cn/349/2005/09/22/Zt60@21128.htm)http://en.chinabroadcast.cn/mmsource/images/2005/08/05/icon-link.gif for which he was in Singapore recently to promote. The musical set in present-day Shanghai is about a love triangle among three characters played by Jacky Cheung, Takeshi Kaneshiro and up-and-coming Chinese actress Zhou Xun.
Chan says the cast members of the $10 million U.S. (RM37.5 million) film were picked, not for their singing abilities but for their aura and physical resemblance to the characters he had in mind. Takeshi was apprehensive and told me he didn't like to sing but I told him that if he can speak his lines, he can sing. And his songs in the film were brilliant, perhaps not comparable in vocal quality to Jacky's, but there was a lot of emotion, Chan says.
South Korean actor Ji Jin Hee, of Jewel in the Palace (2003) fame, who replaced Andy Lau after he turned down the role of a singing angel, faced a different problem. Ji did not know a word of Chinese before the shoot but he worked very hard and learned the language during our shoot, says Chan. He even flew to Hong Kong three or four times to redo his songs and lines in the dubbing studio because he wanted them to be perfect.
Chan has also had to surmount his own career mountains, given the winds of change buffeting the Hong Kong film industry. It has been in disarray for some time so I took a few years off directing and set up my own studio in April 2000 to do Asian co-productions like The Eye, he says.
Chan is a big-name producer in Hong Kong, having produced films like The Eye horror film trilogy by the Pang brothers and Golden Chicken (2002), starring Sandra Ng, which won three awards at the 40th Annual Golden Horse Awards, including Best Actress.
He is also executive producer for the Hollywood adaptation of The Eye which will be directed by Hideo Nakata and star Renee Zellweger. If I didn't produce my own work, I would be subjecting my career to others' hands. And in this line, it's three strikes and you're out.
For his next film, he plans to make a period action drama, tentatively titled Assassination of Ma, which is about China in a period of strife and war in the late 1800s.
Perhaps Love was a new way of expression for me after doing so many love movies. I see it as the last film of the first stage of my filmmaking career. I want to move into a second stage, he says.
Perhaps Love opens in China on December 2nd and in Hong Kong and Singapore on December 8th. (Source: the star)

Perhaps Love script and production stills
From monkeypeaches.com
August 27, 2005
A short making-of featurette was released on the net yesterday. In this musical by Hong Kong director Peter Chan, mainland Chinese actress Zhou Xun plays a movie star who is cast as the lead in a musical set in the old Shanghai and unexpectedly, the male lead (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and the director (Jacky Cheung) are two men from her past. The film is on the "Out of Competition" list of the upcoming Venice Film Festival and is expected to be shown as the closing film. Peter Chan said because there was very little time left, he would not be able to finish all special effects on time and the one to be screened in Venice would be a work-in-progress. To make a theatrical cut, he would definitely do some modification, at least some technical modification, on the Venice version.

Pan-Asian Sensation
Takeshi Kaneshiro became a superstar playing oddball characters. Is this typecasting?
BY KATE DRAKE | TOKYO (mail@web.timeasia.com)
http://img.timeinc.net/time/asia/magazine/2003/1006/takeshi.jpg
NANA SAKAI-K OFFICE FOR TIME. STYLING: TOSHIO TAKEDA
Outcast? Don't let the lost-puppy look fool you. Kaneshiro is an A-list Asian actor
http://img.timeinc.net/time/images/blank.gifMonday, Sep. 29, 2003
When Johnny To signed on to direct the wistfully romantic Turn Left Turn Right, the Hong Kong filmmaker knew exactly whom he wanted to play the male lead. In the illustrated novel by Jimmy Liao, from which the new movie is adapted, the protagonist is so estranged from society that he's depicted floating above the city, like a melancholy blimp. When you want someone who practically oozes that kind of ethereal alienation, whom are you going to call?
Answer: Takeshi Kaneshiro, the half-Taiwanese, half-Japanese movie star who, thanks to his protean good looks and versatile acting skills, has become the Asian film industry's Johnny Deppa quirky, unpredictable leading man capable of seducing audiences no matter how dark or oddball the role. Kaneshiro is "mysterious," says To. "He doesn't belong to Hong Kong, Taiwan or anywhere." Indeed, in his eclectic 10-year career, Kaneshirowho speaks five languages and has made films in four countrieshas trained his chameleon-like talents on a remarkable array of characters. In Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai's Fallen Angels, he played a mute who rode the carcass of a pig like a cowboy. He made love to an HIV-infected teen in the blockbuster Japanese TV miniseries God Please Give Me More Time. In Returner, he played an orphaned assassin-for-hire, and he was a bowling-addicted stockbroker in another Japanese TV series, Golden Bowl. "I don't let myself follow in anyone else's footsteps," says Kaneshiro, 29. "Let other people do what has been done before. All I want is to do something special."
In life and on film, Kaneshiro has proven impossible to typecast. The son of a Japanese businessman and a Taiwanese homemaker, he grew up in Taipei straddling two cultures. "When I went to Japanese school, everybody told me I was Taiwanese," says Kaneshiro. "But when I hung out in the neighborhood, people told me I was Japanese." School-yard taunts about his parentage were a part of his education, but Kaneshiro soon learned that being an outsider offers certain advantages. Pulled over for speeding in Taipei while still a teenager, he produced his Japanese-school ID card instead of a driver's license (he was too young to drive) and babbled at the cop in Japanese. Taking him for a befuddled foreigner, "the cop just got frustrated and waved me off," Kaneshiro says.

Peter Ho Was In Town!
By Sharon Chu
16 Nov - The director of Perhaps Love, Peter Ho-Sun Chan, was at GSC Mid Valley today, attending a press conference to promote his latest movie, Perhaps Love. A jovial Ho said he was happy to be in KL and that his last visit here was three years ago.
Perhaps Love is an intense musical drama about a bitter love triangle. It is pure extravaganza starring some of the biggest names in the Asian entertainment circle - Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhou Xun, Ji Jin Hee and Jacky Cheung.
Before the press conference started, members of the media watched a 30-minute promo plus the making of the movie.

During the press conference, Ho was poised, direct and confident as he answered the medias questions calmly and articulately. Ho worked with renowned Bollywood choreographer Farah Khan in Perhaps Love. Farah is very different from most of people Ive met. Shes not only the most talented (of all the choreographers he has met), shes also articulate. Shes also the nicest person in the world, the director said.
We have a lot of choreographers for concerts but not many film choreographers, and I really didnt want the film to look like an MTV concert, the director joked lightly.
The only places that make movies with people dancing and singing is Bollywood or Hollywood, and I was quite adamant that I was not going to Hollywood. I knew I was coming up with something more out-of-the-box, so I went to Bollywood, explained the director.
Initially, the toughest things (about making the movie) were the songs and dances. I had to switch from a simple mode of working to a more intense mode. Theres really a lot of things that can distract you, so youve got to really keep your head straight and not let pressures around you get in the way, said the director.
A star-tour comprising of the stars of Perhaps Love - Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhou Xun, Ji Jin Hee as well as Peter Ho - will be organised by Golden Screen Cinemas on 3 and 4 December. A meet-the-fans session and live event will be held at the Esplanade, KLCC Park at 5.00pm on 3 December.
Perhaps Love will open in local cinemas on 8 December.

Portion that mentions Takeshi:
Respondents to an online poll voted Taiwan teen idol He Jun-xiang (賀軍翔) the person they would most like to have a one-night-stand with and the preferred object of their sexual fantasies. The usual winners, Hong Kong star Daniel Wu (吳祖) and Takeshi Kaneshiro (金城武), lost out in the sex object stakes to He. With his trademark sunshine smiles and bad-boy looks he has won a lot of votes from the gay community, who adore him as the ideal lover.

Takeshi to Star in USA/Japan version of 'Tekken' (video game)
There has been talk about Takeshi getting a role in the 'Tekken' movie being made by both American and Japanese companies. Namco is the developer of the game. There is no official news about this role but I'm sure we will find out soon, since the movie is supposedly beginning production at the end of the year.

It's not all song and dance
WHEN Takeshi Kaneshiro watched the playback of one of his scenes in Perhaps Love, he told director Peter Chan: "I have so much feeling for this film. How can I make another film when I don't think I could feel the same way again?"
That kind of intensity characterises the much-hyped musical, which closed this year's Venice Film Festival and has been nominated as Hong Kong's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.
In Perhaps Love, which is set in Shanghai's show business world in the 1930s, Kaneshiro and China actress Zhou Xun play actors who were once lovers. Their paths cross again when the pair is cast opposite each other in a musical directed by Zhou's new lover, who is played by Jacky Cheung.
"The film is about memories, about forgetting and remembering. Takeshi's character is obsessive in the way he tries to preserve memories of an event he should forget, while Zhou Xun is obsessive in trying to forget an event that she should remember," Chan told Today yesterday.
"What I wanted for the film is for the audience to go back and think about their pasts. If you're old enough and have been through enough relationships, I'm sure you've had someone you've had to let go along the way."
Chan was in town to launch a series of events leading up to the release of the film here on Dec 8. His visit precedes the arrival of Kaneshiro and Zhou here on Dec 3.
While the US$10 million ($16.9 million) Perhaps Love has been marketed as a musical, only a third of the film involves singing and dancing.
Chan admitted that he was not a fan of musicals and he did not want his actors to break into song suddenly, as is the way in conventional musicals. As a result, he spent two years perfecting a script. "When people sing and dance, they do it legitimately because of the musical within a musical structure," he said.
The exploration of the many layers of love, which has been a consistent theme in Chan's films, is once again seen in Perhaps Love.
"Chinese people are introverted and subtle when it comes to relationships. Most of the time, there are misunderstandings in a relationship because people don't talk about their feelings.
"Likewise, in the film, the characters can't express their feelings and they rely on the script and the songs in the musical to express their frustrations."

From this article, it appears that Peter Chan will be taking Takeshi, Ji Jin Hee to Malaysia for promotion on December 3.
Asked if he would make a sequel, Peter Chan said he would not because it was too worrisome. The script was never finalized and everyday was like a gamble. He fears that he would not be able to sustain the pressure. Perhaps some other directors could make the movie and he would be more than willing to be the producer.

Chan said that, at present the movie overseas release situation "extremely ideal", but he regards as important the inland market. "The story occurs in Beijing, is possibly easier to cause the inland audience's sympathetic chord, therefore I am more confident for the inland box office."
In 1997 Chan directed the movie "Was sweet" and it scocped 9 big awards Hong Kong movie golden statue award. This is a movie of a love story which acted the leading role by Maggie cheung and Leon Lai, which had opened the gateway for Chan to the China market.

Striking a sure note
SHARON WONG
Nov 25:
With four heart-throbs, Broadway-style songs and dances, exciting circus performances and spectacular sets, Perhaps Love has a lot going for it, writes SHARON WONG.
THERES a buzz in town and its all about the latest Chinese blockbuster, Perhaps Love. Not only is it touted as an intense romance musical (there hasnt been a musical in the Chinese film industry for 35 years), it also has such big names as producer Andre Morgan, Oscar-winning cinematographer Peter Pau, Bollywoods hottest choreographer Farah Khan and multiple award-winning Hong Kong director Peter Chan at the helm.
And thats not all. Perhaps Love was the closing film in this years Venice Film Festival and is Hong Kongs official entry for the 78th Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film.
It also has a stellar cast from four regions, comprising Hong Kongs God of Songs, Jacky Cheung, Japanese-Taiwanese heart-throb Takeshi Kaneshiro, Chinas Zhou Xun and South Koreas Ji Hin-hee.
Throw in the fact that it is a kaleidoscope of spectacular set designs, breathtaking circus performances and mesmerising Broadway-style song and dance numbers, do you wonder why people are sitting up and taking notice?
As the advance guard of the films promotional activities, director Chan was in town last week to satisfy some of the curiosity the film has generated. I wouldnt say that Perhaps Love is a 100 per cent musical, he said.
According to Chan, only 30 per cent of the movie is musical while the rest is still a love story. The musical part has been played up to draw people back to the cinemas. Chan said that it is indeed sad that most people these days prefer to watch movies through VCDs or DVDs at home, over the Internet or even on the handphone. It is only when there is a mega blockbuster, usually an action or wushu film, that people will flock to the cinemas, he said.
However, I feel that a mega blockbuster is not restricted to just those genres. An emotional or love story is just as good on the big screen and I hope to draw the crowd back into the cinemas with Perhaps Love.
The making of Perhaps Love was simply awesome. The difficult thing about filming this movie was that the musical part was exceptionally loud and flamboyant while the love story part was exceptionally quiet and realistic. The question was how to balance the two.
Although Chans forte lies in filming love stories he gave the audience such blockbusters as Comrades, Almost a Love Story, which garnered nine awards including Best Film and Best Director (Hong Kong Film Festival in 1997) and Hes a Woman, Shes a Man (Directors Guild of Hong Kong in 1994), which also won Best Film and Best Director he admitted that he knew nothing about musicals and was initially intimidated by the idea of directing one. But he rose to the challenge. I was very insecure but it was interesting as we did not know whats going to happen and our excitement and energy exploded on the screen.
Every day was a gamble. It was very stressful. I probably aged five years in those 10 months of filming. But now, looking back, there was also lots of fun.
Shot in Beijing and Shanghai, the film is a US$10 million (RM38 million) production told in a movie-within-a-movie, featuring a love triangle. Jealousy, hatred and passion ignited by memories of the past collide and culminate through the intervention of a seasoned muse, a modern-day Cupid, who shares their joy and sorrow.
Besides the powerful talking point of Perhaps Love being a musical, another major attraction is definitely the cast and where Cheung, Kaneshiro and Zhou are concerned, Chan said that they were his first choice from the start. I wanted Zhou Xun for the female lead because she is a very likeable person and the character is not, Chan said. Zhou is very affecting and Im sure she will be able to make people cry.
Takeshi is the only actor who is the right age and who looks naive enough to be addicted to one woman for 10 years. His eyes are very painful and hes perfect for the role.
As for Jacky, no one can sing and act like he does. Hes also old enough his character must be at least in his 40s and although not good-looking, he has a certain charm and sensitivity to him.
Chan revealed that initially, Andy Lau was his choice for the role of the muse but he was unable to make it due to contract problems. Chan finally settled on South Koreas fast rising heart-throb Ji Hin-hee and fine-tuned the script to fit him in.
Obviously, the movie would have gone another way if Andy had been able to make it but Ji worked out great too, said Chan. He looks like the kind of man who would lend you his shoulder in times of trouble. Hes trustworthy and has an innocence about him ... to me, he just looks like an angel!
With a great cast and crew, anticipation is high for the release of Perhaps Love. And now, heres a chance for fans to rub shoulders with some of the stars when they come here in conjunction with the movies release.
Chan will return together with Kaneshiro, Zhou Xun and Ji to meet fans at the Esplanade, KLCC Park, on Dec 3 at 5pm. A series of related contests will be held via Astro and www.gsc.com.my and winners can expect an exclusive lunch date with the stars, attend the premiere of the movie on Dec 7, as well as get other movie passes and exclusive movie merchandise.
Perhaps Love, which is funded by Astro Shaw, with worldwide distribution by Celestial Pictures, opens on Dec 8 at Golden Screen cinemas.

Looks and more
By LI EE KEE
Just like his character Min Jong-ho in last years South Korean hit drama Jewel in the Palace, Ji Jin-hee is a man of few words. During a recent 15-minute phone interview with the good-looking actor, every question was met with a concise (and almost trite) answer.
The only time during the humdrum interview where he surprised us with his sense of humour was when he was asked who between co-star Takeshi Kaneshiro and he was better looking.
I am, answered the father-to-be (his wife is expecting their first child soon). I am manlier than he is. Everyone burst out laughing.
Ji was calling from Hong Kong where he was promoting Perhaps Love. Ji, who is also the storys narrator, portrays a modern day Cupid, descended on Earth to explore the meaning of love, and in the process mends the estranged relationship between two long-separated lovers.
Asked if he believes in angels (seeing that he plays one), Ji admitted that he is a believer although I dont think their power is great because the world has many sick and unhappy people.
Is he happy then? Yes, I am. There are moments when I am sad but I try to keep an optimistic outlook on things, Ji said, adding that one of the things that makes him happy is when his work as an actor receives good comments.
Well, this 34-year-old mechanical engineering major will be delighted to know that he has been getting glowing feedback from director Peter Chan and co-star Jacky Cheung.
Chan commended on his professionalism while Cheung praised his singing skills. Ji, who learned Mandarin from scratch, delivers several Chinese numbers in the movie.
Well, he (Cheung) couldnt possibly have said otherwise, can he? quipped Ji.
I had the opportunity to hear him sing and he is fantastic.
Jis role was initially offered to Andy Lau, who turned it down due to his busy schedule. Chan then contacted Ji, who flew to Hong Kong three days later for auditions.
It was an interesting character and I got to work with a good director and cast, explained Ji on his reasons for accepting the part.
I had a happy experience working with everyone and learned a lot, especially how the other actors analysed and prepared for their roles.

A mature role
By MICHAEL CHEANG
When director Peter Chan was looking for an actress from China who could sing, dance and act to star in his new musical Perhaps Love, one name stood out at the top of his list Zhou Xun.
With a background in folk dance training at the Hangzhou arts school, award-winning performances in various Chinese TV series, a best newcomer award by the Brand Ingrid Millet Paris for her role in The Little Chinese Seamstress, and a hit music record under her belt, Zhou would appear to be over-qualified for the role, and her enthusiasm for the role as the icy Sun Na was evident during a phone interview from China.
I was very excited when I found out that Perhaps Love had a lot of singing and dancing. When I arrived on location and saw the beautiful set, I was even happier! she enthused.
The character she plays is a drastic departure for the 27-year-old, who is better known for playing docile young women in her previous TV roles.
http://www.star-ecentral.com/archives/2005/11/25/movies/f_07zhou.jpg
Chinese actress Zhou Xun is Sun Na in Perhaps Love.
Its true that Sun Na is very different from all my previous roles, and a lot more mature too. She is a very pragmatic person who is willing to give up that which she loves most. She doesnt want love, she just wants to be famous, said Zhou. After this, I dont think I can go back to doing the innocent girl type of role, because my perception of life and my feelings have changed now.
Zhou is no stranger to Peter Chans work, having watched and loved his award-winning film Comrades: Almost a Love Story.
I loved the way he handles emotions with such detail, she said. On set, he is very open, and would always take suggestions from the cast and add them to the movie. It was also the first time Id worked with a director who was so serious about the post-production that he did it all himself.
I remember one time when we were filming a scene by the swimming pool. I was feeling very nervous and scared, so I told Peter. He advised me to take it easy and dont be too anxious because its just a movie. I was no longer nervous after that, she recalled.
She also had nothing but praise for her fellow male leads. Jacky (Cheung) is a very humble and down-to-earth person, who is very experienced and serious about his work. I used to think I was already professionally very mature and experienced, but when I saw him in action, I realised that I had a long way to go and that there was so much more I could learn from him.
As for Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhou described the Taiwanese heartthrob as a very quiet person. He has a very low-profile and quiet personality, which is very rare among actors these days, she said. I also admire (Korean actor) Ji Jin-hee, because he was willing to take a risk to do a movie that is not in his mother tongue.

Layers of love in Perhaps Love
By MICHAEL CHEANG
When he was in Kuala Lumpur recently to promote Perhaps Love, the first Chinese musical film in 30 years; director Peter Chan Ho-sun took every opportunity to remind everyone of one very important thing that the movie is NOT a musical.
Perhaps Love is a love story, not a musical. Its not even being promoted as a musical, the long-haired, bespectacled director kept stressing over and over again. It is not a musical in the conventional sense. My characters dont break out into song.
Initially, it was a challenge to balance the over-the-top element in musicals and the subtleties of a movie. In the end, the method I used to overcome that was to make a movie-within-a-movie.
In the movie, Takeshi Kaneshiro plays actor Lin Jian Dong, the star in a new musical helmed by renowned director, Nie Wen (Jacky Cheung). Coincidentally, Lins co-star, Sun Na (Zhou Xun), is a former lover who left him a decade earlier for Nie who made her a star.
http://www.star-ecentral.com/archives/2005/11/25/movies/f_07takeshi.jpg
Taiwanese heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro plays actor Lin Jian Dong in Peter Chan Ho-suns (pic below) new flick, Perhaps Love.
Ironically, the musical they are starring in centres on a love triangle which features Lin and Sun in leading roles, with director Nie (playing the role of the circus owner) as the third part of the triangle. In it, an amnesiac woman who has forgotten everything (even her lover) is saved from the streets by a generous circus owner, whom she later falls in love with. However, when she recovers her memory, she finds herself torn between her past and present.
At the same time, an angel called Montage (played by Korean actor Ji Jin-hee) appears in Shanghai yearning for a taste of genuine human emotions, and is drawn towards the jealousy, hatred and passion that ensue within the love triangle.
According to Chan, the movie musical that Perhaps Love resembles the most would be 1972s Cabaret, starring Liza Minnelli and Michael York.
Cabaret is not a classic musical-type musical. It is very realistic. That was what I was trying to achieve with this movie, he explained during an interview at GSC Midvalley Golden Lounge in Kuala Lumpur recently.
As he stresses over and over again, Perhaps Love is all about love, a subject that he is very familiar with, having made his name with critically acclaimed love stories such as 1994s Hes A Woman, Shes A Man (which was awarded the Best Film of the Year by the Directors Guild of Hong Kong), and 1997s Comrades: Almost a Love Story, which won an unprecedented nine awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards that year, including Best Film and Best Director.
Perhaps Love is a film that defines every single aspect of love in a single film, said Chan. Everything I could think of in terms of love and relationships is in that movie. It depicts different levels of maturity in love, and everyone who watches it will have a different view of it, depending on how old you are.
To pull off a multi-layered love story movie-cum-musical like this, choosing the proper cast was immensely important. Fortunately, Chan managed to get all three of his first choice actors for the three main roles Taiwanese heartthrob actor Takeshi Kaneshiro, Hong Kongs veteran actor/singer Jacky Cheung and established actress-singer Zhou Xun from China. Rounding up the multi-national cast is Korean star Ji Jin-hee (Jewel in the Palace).
Chan described Zhou Xun as a very likeable and emotionally effecting girl who can make you cry. The character of Sun Na is that of a girl who has to give up something very precious to her. For that, I needed a real actress, and Zhou Xun was my first choice for the role, said Chan.
In Takeshis case, he was the only actor I knew who looks naive enough to love someone for 10 years, Chan laughed. It was also important that he was not young enough to look too naive, and at the same time, he also didnt look so old that he just looks stupid.
As for Jacky, there is really no one else in the region who can sing and act as well as he can. We also needed someone who was old and mature enough for the role, and yet still exude a different type of charm that can compete with someone like Takeshi for the girls heart.
Another leading cast member who was Chans first choice was Korean actor Ji Jin-hee, who was roped in after Andy Lau was forced to pull out due to contractual problems. Initially, we had planned for Lau to be a talk-show-host-like narrator who introduces the film and the characters, but when he pulled out, we changed the intro into a slower one and cast Ji Jin-hee as an angel who rekindles memories in the lead characters instead.
Chan said that Perhaps Love was one of the most stressful movies hed ever made.
I think I aged five years in last 10 weeks I was making the film! It was a very scary process, and it was the most stressful (movie) set Ive ever been on. Every day was a gamble to see if we could finish filming what wed set out to film, and I felt very uneasy at the end of each day, he recalled. Furthermore, the fact that I had not shot a single full-length Chinese film in the last 10 years gave me even more pressure.
As for the future, Chan doubts he would be attempting something as elaborate and complex as Perhaps Love. In fact, he admits to be a little bit sick of filming love stories for now.
One thing is for sure though, we wont be seeing any action movies from this director. I have no interest at all in action movies. Even when I am watching them on a VCD, I tend to fast-forward all the action bits where there is no one talking.
One of his dream projects would be to make a realistic Chinese period film.
Many period films today do not have an element of realism. There is always the feeling that what you see on-screen is all made-up and fake, he lamented.
I want to make a film that will give you the realism of that particular age, and show the real way of life back then, and make you feel as though youve gone back in time.
Perhaps Love was funded by Astro Shaw, with worldwide distribution by Celestial Pictures. The movie will open on Dec 7.

A TALE OF PASSION AND FAME
BILLED as the first Chinese musical feature film in 35 years, Perhaps Love boasts a stellar cast of stars from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and Korea, and acclaimed behind-the-scenes film makers.
Veteran director Peter Chan is joined by Oscar-winning cinematographer Peter Pau (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Asian heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro (House Of Flying Daggers), Heavenly King Jacky Cheung, up and coming Chinese actress Zhou Xun (The Little Chinese Seamstress and Suzhou River), and popular Korean actor Ji Jin-Hee (famed series Jewel In The Palace).
Renowned Bollywood dance choreographer Farah Khan helmed the musical scenes while the films original music is by Hong Kongs Peter Kam and Leon Ko.
The US$10 million (RM35 million) production, shot in Beijing and Shanghai, is a touching love story. It is also filled with spectacular set designs, breath-taking circus performances, mesmerizing Broadway-style musical numbers and punctuated by beautiful songs and dances.
Perhaps Love has been selected to be screened at the Venice Film Festival and is chosen as Hong Kongs entry to the 78th Annual Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
Set in modern day Shanghai, this movie-within-a-movie features a love triangle plot between Zhou Xun, Kaneshiro and Cheung that parallels the actors' lives. Their jealousy, hatred and passion ignited by memories of the past collide and culminate through the intervention of a seasoned muse or a modern-day Cupid, who shares their joy and sorrow.
It begins when a muse, Montage (Ji Jin-Hee), appears in Shanghai yearning to taste genuine human emotions and puts himself out as a beacon for lost souls.
Famed actor Lin Jian Dong (Takeshi Kaneshiro), the star in a new musical helmed by renowned director, Nie Wen (Jacky Cheung) meets co-star Sun Na (Zhou Xun), who is an old flame from a decade ago. Sun is now in a relationship with Nie, who made her a star.
The production is about an amnesiac woman who forgets everything, even her lover, but saved from the streets by a generous circus owner. They fall in love. But when she recovers her memory, she finds herself torn between her past and present..
While Lin and Sun play the lead role, Nie also co-stars and plays the circus owner, unaware of his two stars' previous relationships. The memories of Lin and Sun come back to overwhelm them and the romance of their past is rekindled as the production of the musical progresses...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE CAST
DIRECTOR Peter Chan on his cast members, whom he picked not for their singing abilities but for their aura and physical resemblance to the characters he had in mind.
Takeshi Kaneshiro
"Takeshi plays an extreme character, a tormented soul, hurt in love 10 years ago. His character cannot close his eyes at night and gets hyper and does strange things. His life is an irony.
"I think Takeshi played the role to perfection. He brought a lot to the screen and he brought the character to life. Such a character, if not handled carefully could be ridiculous. But he really lived the role.
I didnt even give him direction for some of the most emotional twists and turns in the movie. He developed the scenes himself.
Jacky Cheung
"He can sing and act and I cant think of anyone else that could play that character, who together with Takeshi, make a triangular relationship with Zhou Xun.
"The fact that he is not that good looking but has a persona of a mature, good husband makes a girl difficult to leave him.
"Jacky is one of the best and is probably the most under-rated actor in Hong Kong."
Zhou Xun
"Zhou Xun makes you cry. She was not chosen because of her popularity because to be honest, I think no actress in China is really that popular to command the box office.
"The investors first choice was in fact to cast someone totally unknown but I couldnt find anyone from about 1,000 I saw, besides Zhou Xun.
Ji Jin-Hee
"Although he only came on board later to replace the original person I had in mind (Andy Lau), I feel I could not find someone else to play the role of the muse better than Ji Jin Hee.
"With his mellow and reliable disposition, he balances the extreme characters of Takeshi and Zhou Xun and he fits this remote character perfectly."
Perhaps Love, funded by Astro Shaw (a subsidiary of Astro), with worldwide distribution by Celestial Pictures, will open in Malaysian cinemas on Dec 8, 2005.

On the opening page it has a link that would suggest that the site can be read in english, but it doesn't seem to do anything (the only one i can work is the one labelled 'simplify chinese' - any luck with the 'english' button, anyone else? if not, could someone enlighten me as to any interesting bits of infomation written here? thanks!)..
Anyhow, it has some pretty cool photos and images etc. i'm so excited - i can't wait till this comes out! enjoy!

Edited To Add:
If you haven't visited the official site lately, it's undergone a huge update. Included are two trailers and a "making of" video (which would be ever so much more interesting if I spoke Chinese!)

Perhaps Love" Launches Soundtrack
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2005-09/13/content_3483756.htm (http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2005-09/13/content_3483756.htm)
13 September 2005
BEIJING, Sept. 13 -- The Chinese movie "Perhaps Love", directed by veteran Hong Kong film maker Peter Ho-Sun Chan, and choreographed by the Vanity Fair choreographer Farah Khan, is scheduled for release at Christmas. But the movie's soundtrack will be available much sooner.
The ten-million US dollar movie stars Chinese mainland actress Zhou Xun, Taiwan-based idol Takeshi Kaneshiro, Veteran Hong Kong performer Jacky Cheung and South Korean star Ji Jin-hee. The director escorted the cast as they signed a publishing contract of the movie's original soundtrack with EMI. The event was accompanied by the music video of the movie's theme song "Crossroads", sung by Kaneshiro and Zhou Xun. It's the first time Kaneshiro has sang in ten years.
"Perhaps Love" has already been branded as China's "Chicago" and a copy of Hollywood. But the director has his own opinion.
Director of "Perhaps Love" Peter Hosun Chan said, 'Perhaps Love' should actually not be categorized as a musical. I just wanted to push the love affairs to a more extreme point and I found singing and dancing is a necessary way. So I would rather call it a variation of a love story."
The movie tells the story of a young star's experience as she grows up and the two men in love with her. The South Korean actor Ji Jin-hee, starring the role of Monty, also contributes his Chinese singing to the movie's soundtrack.

Cpop Hk Music News: PERHAPS LOVE (YU GOR OI)'s Jacky Cheung
Posted on Tuesday, September 20 @ 00:51:10 PDT by compbuyuk
PERHAPS LOVE (YU GOR OI)'s Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Ji Jin-Hee and Zhou Xun yesterday arrived in Beijing for the film's original soundtrack press conference. Another lead Takeshi Kaneshiro due to visa issue could not appear. PERHAPS LOVE is a Peter Chan Ho Sun directed, 80 million yuan romantic musical. At the press conference highlights were shown and the Gum Sing Mo and Zhou Xun music video INTERSECTION (SUP JI GAI TAU) was premiered. In it they had an underwater kiss scene, which made the viewers screamed.
The event hosts were Chan Ho Sun and Tao Jing Ying. They asked each actors questions. Chan Ho Sun first introduced Hok Yau with "God Song has arrived"; Hok Yau pointed out that Chan Ho Sun ordinarily had no temper except on the set, thus he was influenced to never direct. Chan Ho Sun argued that Hok Yau was like that too, which had nothing to do with directing.
PERHAPS LOVE took 80 million yuan and a year of casting to produce. Finally Chan Ho Sun was very satisfied with everyone's performance. The film was honored to be selected as the Venice Film Festival's closing film. Chan Ho Sun pointed out no matter what he had to try to finish post production as soon as possible for this rare chance. Unfortunately Hok Yau would have to stay in Hong Kong for the Disneyland opening and could only complain that he was not meant to be at the festival. Ji Jin-Hee looked forward to the Venice trip and revealed that he has already prepared two suits for it.
Under the motivation of Hok Yau, everyone performed the film's songs well. Ji Jin-Hee was unwilling to praise his personal singing but had nothing but praise for Hok Yau's personality. He would like to make Chinese films as well. Chinese directors who he admired included Zhang Yimou. Hok Yau and Ji Jin-Hee relied on translators to communicate. Hok Yau praised his singing, and the soon to be father Ji Jin-Hee could not be more excited. Only his Korean doctor would not tell him the baby's sex in advance.
Zhou Xun and Gum Sing Mo had more scenes and many intimate scenes together. Zhou Xun pointed out that Gum Sing Mo warmed up slowly and needed more time to become familiar. Later they had a lot of fun on the shoot. Chan Ho Sun praised Zhou Xun as the second Maggie Cheung Man Yuk. Zhou un was very happy because she liked Cheung Man Yuk. As for former boyfriend Li Apeng's marriage to Faye Wong, Zhou Xun said, "I am very happy. I really like Faye Wong. Their marriage is great. I wish them well." She revealed that her own love life was decent as well.
Last Sunday due to too many people were admitted to Disneyland many complained. Hok Yau objectively expressed that when he went to the Tokyo Disneyland he waited three hours for Winnie the Pooh. Other Disney locations around the world require waiting as well. Japan has already opened for 20 years. Hong Kong's is still an infant. Of course it still had many places to improve upon.

Perhaps Love (Ruguo Ai)
Lee Marshall in Venice 15 September 2005
Dir: Peter Ho-sun Chan. HK-Ch-Malay. 2005. 108mins.
The seeming Chinese answer to Moulin Rouge, Perhaps Love is a lavish but insubstantial musical love story with pan-Asian cinema and music stars Zhou Xun (Suzhou River, The Little Chinese Seamstress) and Takeshi Kaneshiro (Chungking Express, House Of Flying Daggers) in the Nicole and Ewan roles.
It’s an odd mix: arthouse in its three-strand film-within-a-film plot and open ending, much more traditional in its choreography (by Bollywood supremo Farah Khan) and music, which eschews oriental models for the full-on Andrew Lloyd-Webber experience.
It is neither as innovative nor as outrageous as Luhrmann’s neo-musical: then again, high camp never plays well with Chinese audiences and would also likely run into problems with authorities.
Perhaps Love should perform strongly in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and the burgeoning mainland Chinese market – one of its key targets - while the presence of Kaneshiro will stir interest in Japan.
But outside of these territories, the obvious stumbling block of Chinese-language songs – whose lyrics were only poorly rendered in the subtitles of the version that previewed at Venice – will confine the film’s audience to specialist and niche slots.
A noirish opening sequence, narrated by a melancholy observer called Montage (Korean star Ji Jin-Hee) plunges us straight into the musical-within-a-musical that gives the temporally fragmented plot a veneer of present-day cohesion. Hot new heartthrob Lin Jiang Dong (Kaneshiro) and established diva Sun Na (Zhou Xun) have been paired in a new musical with a 1930s Shanghai circus setting, directed by legendary film-maker Nie Wen (Jacky Cheung).
Lin and Sun knew each other 10 years before, in Beijing, when he was a hard-up film student and she was a bar singer with a waif-like insouciance that seems modelled on the Giulietta Masina of Fellini’s La Strada. But their platonic love affair is spiked when the ambitious Sun leaves Lin for director Nie, who she knows can make her famous.
The present-day action switches back and forth with some elegance between the musical – in which the love triangle is reproduced, with Nie Wen playing a circusmaster, Sun his trapeze artist lover, and Lin the man from her past – and the behind-the-scenes drama, in which a still infatuated Lin tries to remind Sun of their affair, and her bar-singer past, which she has cancelled from her official biography and mental hard disk.
The third timeline – a flashback to that earlier affair – kicks in when Lin persuades Sun to travel to Beijing with him to refresh her memory (these scenes, set mostly in a disused warehouse, are shot by Chris Doyle, while the rest of the lush cinematography is the work of Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger cinematographee Peter Pau).
The song-and-dance numbers are a grab-bag of references and borrowings, from Busby Berkeley to the Umbrellas Of Cherbourg to Cultural Revolution chic (distilled in the donkey jacket and comrade cap worn by Lin in his embedded musical role); while the final trapeze sequence takes us back to 1950s circus movies like The Greatest Show On Earth.
But though there is undoubted chemistry in the Zhou Xun-Kaneshiro pairing, Perhaps Love suffers from problems with its plotting and the post-modern nature of its receding mirrors structure. In coming on all Wong Kar-wai, it pulls the Rodgers and Hammerstein punch of the true, no-holds-barred romantic musical.

Takeshi's kiss scenes

The main attraction of Perhaps Love are tremendous singing, dancng and the romantic love story. Especially, the passionate kiss scenes of Takeshi kaneshiro and Zhou Xun were so emotionally romantic. Peter Chan was very impressed with their performances after the 3 kiss scenes. Chan said," There were only 2 kiss scenes in the original script but we had added an extra one, after I have explained the need for this scene, both of the actors agreed and practiced the scene infront of me, thats how professional they were."
The first kiss scene took place when they were still unknown actors and it happened in their run-down home, this kiss scene lasted for a whole one minute, they kiss scene was so passionate and the actors were really into the roles. The second happened when they met after 10 years in a movie that they were making. The last kiss scene was when they were watching the playback of the movie they reminisced their past passion.
Also, Takeshi's water scenes, in the movie he often have insomnia caused by the heartache of love, he would numb the pain by jumping into the swimming pool. It was so emtional when he shed an underwater tear, expressing the pain he had in his unhealed heart. An addition to the scene by Takeshi himself.

The writer was a student for film school in Taiwan and she purposely took a course in managing film festivals. She had a feeling that this year he would be there. Throughout the course, they had to swore to secrecy and so even though she knew Takeshi would attend, she couldn't share the secret with anyone.
Her sole purpose to join this course was to see Takeshi and she among all students was chosen to guide the guests from the front to the backstage to present the awards.
On rehearsal day, she sat in the assigned seat for Takeshi thinking that this would be her only chance to feel the seat that he would sit in.
On the day, her first job was to meet with the guests at the hotel and escort them to their car. But because there were too many Takeshi fans, they have arranged him to get into a car in another location by a secret passage. That was the first time she missed out on him.
Her second job was to escort the stars to the backstage. When Takeshi was at the red carpet, her heart was pounding. But she was disheartened because the moment he arrived, he went to the backstage and never took the seat in the front. So she never had the chance to meet him. The closest she got to was 5 feet away from him as he entered the backstage and for the next 3 hours, he stayed in the backstage in his own assigned room. When he presented the award, he was up there and she was down there, their distance forever growing farther apart.
At the reception, she thought perhaps he would show up but she learnt that the company has already whisked him away to Taipei immediately after the presentation of his segment.

Low profile Takeshi have found his real life reflections in the PL movie.
Takeshi said "I am a guy who would get crazy over love and I can not express my love easily".
People think for a guy like him he would not get jilted but he said " How do you know I havent been unlucky in love? but I see it like fate if it comes it comes and if it goes it goes, it just take time for me to heal my wounds, no hatred or vengence.
He lives his life each day it comes, for instance his career, he said he tried to take everything easy, is all down to fate and destiny. He will not let the character affect his emotions, its just acting, not all actors are crazy, everyone is different.
For all those false accusations he opted for "automatic delete", he had learned to ignore and forget and stay happy.
But one incident he cannot forget was when he was accused of being homosexual, yes "GAY", the hotel incident, when they took photos of his room and said he used two towels. Takeshi said " Whats wrong of using two towels?? from what grounds this is a sign of homosexuality? They have fabricated this report which had made me very angry, not happy at all".

In one scene it's about Zhou Xun hiding outside the noodle shop looking hungry and she saw Takeshi has left almost a half bowl of noodles there. So she hurriedly slurped it down while he was not looking but in the end Takeshi found out. Seeing her in such a state, he invited her home and from then on their relationship started.
To film this scene, Zhou Xun was required to look timid and yet polite. For Zhou Xun, it was most memorable because in a short time she had to finish the bowl of noodles and soup. For the first take she almost choked. In the second take, the soup was so hot that she burned her tongue. For the rest of the week, she didn't dare eat noodles again.
In another scene was about her picking up her bicycle but because she focused on her acting, she was often out of balance. Luckily Takeshi was beside her and she felt a sense of security. Because it was very cold, Takeshi and Zhou Xun stayed inside the wooden shed and kept warm by the fire pot. That day the crew brought a lot of food on site and in the end, after the two finished their roles, Peter Chen and the other staff couldn't stand it and went ahead with a hot pot meal.

Peter Chan, Director of "Perhaps love", said, "The film features a form of 'drama in drama'. The cast presents a triangle of love in a film set in a period seventy years ago, actually getting involved into a two triangle love story -- which is different."
Three leading actors sing for real in the musical, which is another selling point.

The veteran singer and actor said that the music and dance scenes in the film by director Peter Chan would be easy to translate for stage.
Cheung, who starred in Perhaps Love as one of the leading actors, believes that the film should be adapted with respect to the development of the story.
Though this will be his first time as a director, Cheung is confident, saying that he has gained a lot of experience from his sold-out musical "Snow, Wolf, Lake".
Perhaps Love is bidding for a nomination of the 78th Academy Awards and will premiere in China on December 2nd.

HK musical "Perhaps Love" debutes in Beijing
www.chinaview.cn (http://www.chinaview.cn/) 2005-11-30 17:12:07
BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- The first Chinese musical in four decades opened in theaters in Beijing on Wednesday.
"Perhaps Love" is a passionate work by renowned Hong Kong director Peter Chan Ho-sun. The film is framed within a romantic triangle, switching between 1930s and modern China.
"It's a traditional Chinese love story, but I try to find a new way to tell it instead of just a straight narrative," said Chan.
Chan said he had never expected to stage a come back with a musical after his last project "Comrades, Almost a Love Story" in 1996.
"But I thought music is a more powerful way to convey emotions -- happiness, hatred, jealousy and regrets, all of which can be found in 'Perhaps Love'," said Chan.
With a budget of 10 million US dollars, this is Chan's first work shot on the Chinese mainland. It brings together some of renowned stars: Hong Kong singer and actor Jacky Cheung, Chinese actress Zhou Xun, Taiwan-born Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Ji Jin-Hee, an actor from the Republic of Korea.
"I think the mainland market is very important and such a cast will attract an audience here," said the director.
Chosen to close the prestigious Venice Film Festival in September this year, "Perhaps Love" was also designated to represent Hong Kong in the hope of receiving an Oscar nomination for best foreign film.
Chan made his name familiar to mainland movie goers with his breakout film "Comrades, Almost a Love Story", also a romance. It won nine awards at the 1996 Hong Kong Film Awards, including best picture and best director. Enditem

"Perhaps Love" Draws Crowds
NO doubt about it. "Perhaps Love (http://en.chinabroadcast.cn/349/2005/09/22/Zt60@21128.htm),"http://en.chinabroadcast.cn/mmsource/images/2005/08/05/icon-link.gif said to be Chinas first musical film in 30 years, is definitely a crowd pleaser. The musical romance, directed by Peter Chan, brought in 300,000 yuan (US$37,000) in box-office receipts during its first weekend at Shenzhens Golden Harvest cinema.
The love triangles international cast stars Hong Kong song god Jacky Cheung, South Korean actor Ji Jin-hee, Taiwanese-Japanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro and Chinese actress Zhou Xun.
The US$10-million films handsome photography and lavish costuming for 1930s Shanghai create the atmosphere for the love triangle played by Cheung, Kaneshiro and Zhou.
While the characters break into song and dance at dramatic moments, moviegoers leary of musicals neednt worry. One fortysomething moviegoer said: The film gave me a bit of Broadway-style musical, but it has a clear structure and well-narrated story.
Although all the stars are successful pop singers, Chan said in an earlier interview that the cast was selected for their resemblance to the characters rather than their singing abilities. Chan told Hong Kong newspapers that the film is all about a love story, not just a plotless musical.
In September, Perhaps Love edged out Jackie Chans The Myth and Stanley Kwans Everlasting Love as Hong Kongs Academy Award entry for best foreign film Oscar. Earlier this year, Perhaps Love was the closing film at the Venice Film Festival.

Actor Takeshi Kaneshiro not interested in spotlight anymore
By Jeanine Tan, TODAY
So young and so handsome, yet he cooped himself up in his hotel room like a recluse when he wasnt needed for the days filming.
That was how director Peter Chan described Takeshi Kaneshiro, the star of his new film Perhaps Love, during a press conference yesterday.
Chan, Kaneshiro and Chinese actress Zhou Xun were in town to promote the film, which opens here on Thursday. The way Chan talked about his leading man made Kaneshiro, 31, seem like a bit of a curious character.
While he took his directors comments with good humour, his retort was half-hearted.
Its because I make fewer appearances so people say Im reclusive. I do go out when all of you are filming, only its a little less often than everyone else, he said.
When Im in my room, I fill the bathtub with water and submerge myself to practise for the underwater scene in the film, he said with a laugh.
But the ribbing about the actors supposed eccentricities did not stop there. Chan praised Kaneshiro, saying he was impressed with the actors emotive portrayal of a heartbroken lover, but added with a laugh that he didnt think someone so handsome could have had his heart broken.
And it was here that Kaneshiro made this surprising proclamation: Its no use being handsome.
For someone blessed with such flawless features to say something like that smacks of irony. But in the evolution of his decade-long career, which has included making movies in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan, Kaneshiro has steered clear of typecasting, even if he hasnt gone so far as to downplay his looks.
As a 15-year-old studying at the Taipei American School, Kaneshiro the son of a Japanese businessman father and Taiwanese homemaker mother launched his career as a slickly packaged teen idol.
He wasnt much of a singer, yet he released his fair share of albums. He wasnt a polished actor either, but he still managed to make a name for himself in Hong Kong films.
The toothy grin that characterised those early days of stardom is flashed less often now. He has since remade himself into a serious actor who seems to have eccentric taste in movie projects. These days, his image is more brooding than cute and if media reports are to be believed, the man is occasionally more temperamental than congenial.
But in an interview after the press conference, Kaneshiro was, thankfully, in a good mood. While famously defensive about his personal life, he was fairly candid in his responses. When his overly protective publicists leapt into action whenever a personal question cropped up, he would wave them off.
Appearances arent important to me. Looks are a factor if youre a model, an actor or a singer, because you are presenting yourself to an audience. But in real life, the way you interact with people has little to do with how you look, he said.
When it comes to work, your looks get you noticed but its the other things that determine whether you progress beyond that stage.
Kaneshiro has certainly progressed far beyond the stage when he was known primarily as a pretty face, but he does not deny how he got his start.
In the beginning, it was easy to be typecast as a pretty face. But even pretty faces have their role in a film and you do learn a lot even if youre only in a film as a pretty face.
My looks came from my parents and I can only say Im blessed. A lot of people look good and everyone has different tastes so theres no saying who is the most handsome.
He also spoke about his so-called mysterious nature. His singing career ended long ago and, in recent years, he has made an average of just one film a year.
As his official public appearances have become increasingly rare, one would think the paparazzi would try harder to dig up details about his personal life. But if they have tried, they havent been too successful.
Ive stopped being in the limelight so much that people think Im mysterious. I dont see the point in attending events. Ive always been an introvert and I dont like to be in crowded places.
Whenever Im out in Taiwan or Hong Kong, people tend to be very friendly when they see me. This makes it awkward for my friends and family, so they would rather not go out with me.
Nonetheless, there were reports recently that Kaneshiro was spotted with another man on a hotel balcony at this years Cannes Film Festival.
While he did not refer explicitly to that incident, he said: People can say whatever they want, Ill only be unhappy for awhile. Then Ill think: Theyre really clever to be able to write something like that. Its not something that you can do anything about.
Not being in the public eye actually helps my films a lot. The less news about your personal life there is out there, the more people are able to take you seriously in the roles you play.
Its hard to imagine a pretty face saying that. Those seem like the words of a serious actor.
Of course, Ive changed. No matter whether I work with a famous director or a little-known director, everything is an experience.
Even if you have the best director, cast and script, that doesnt mean the film will be the best film ever. Working with so many people over the years, Ive l e a r n e d quite a lot.

Perhaps Love Team In KL
By Sharon Chu, Veronica Khoo and Natasha Nair
7starsperhaps00.jpg 5 Dec - The stars of Perhaps Love, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Zhou Xun, were at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in KL on 4 December (Sunday), accompanied by director Peter Ho-Sun Chan and producer Andre Morgan. A day before the press conference, Takeshi, Zhou and Peter attended the movies premiere at KLCC where they met with excited fans. At the press conference, Takeshi Kaneshiro stole the spotlight from his bosses and co-worker. The popular Asian star said that he had not been to Malaysia for a very long time because he was tied down by other projects. It has been 12 years since his last visit to Malaysia.

Takeshis director, the remarkable Peter Chan, spoke to the press about his lead actors role in the movie. Said Peter Chan, His (Takeshi Kaneshiro) character is basically a man whos obsessed with the woman that he loves. Emotionally, his character is frozen and damaged.
Takeshis character in the movie is unable to sleep because of his emotional problems, so he resorts to taking pills, and when he cant have the pills, he goes crazy! Swimming becomes a sort of sanctuary for Takeshis character in the movie, Chan continued.
Initially, we didnt realise that hed (Takeshi) be so good in the water. He actually looks better underwater! joked the director.

Meanwhile, the pixy-ish Zhou Xun looked as splendid as ever. I looked out at KL from my hotel room this (Sunday) morning, and I thought it was beautiful, gushed the lead actress of Perhaps Love.
The movie, which also stars renowned Hong Kong singer Jacky Cheung and Korean actor Ji Jin Hee, is a movie within a movie, as it is about the making of a stage musical, starring Lin Jian Tung (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and Sun Na (Zhou Xun). Sun Nas lover, Nip Man (Jacky Cheung) directs the musical. A love triangle involving the actor, actress and director of the musical brims over with drama, jealousy, hatred and passion in the movie Perhaps Love.
Zhou Xun said that if she was caught in a real-life situation that is similar to her character in the movie, she would not choose either one of the men who were vying for her affection.
The press conference ended with the stars, director and producer posing for the cameras. Seeing the stars of the musical drama reminiscent of Hollywoods Moulin Rouge and Chicago with their director and producer was indeed a rare moment of glamour.
The day before, Malaysian girls turned up in full force at KLCC park to catch a glimpse of Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhou Xun and Peter Chan, who all attended the Grand Premiere of Perhaps Love at KLCC. The event was brought to the fans by Astro Shaw.
Perhaps Love was funded by Astro Shaw and TVB, and it is distributed worldwide by Celestial Pictures, which is a subsidiary of ASTRO All Asia Networks (ASTRO). Mr. Ananda Krishnan was also at the event last Saturday as ASTRO is one of his many companies in his media conglomerate.
The meet-and-greet session saw hundreds of fans gather in KLCC park from as early as 6pm onwards in anticipation of seeing Takeshi Kaneshiro. Ardent fans let nothing stand in their way, climbing walls and lining the perimeter as they waited anxiously. Lucky winners from Astro, MyFM and VMag were given specially allocated seating to view their idol up close.
Fans hoping to make contact with the elusive Takeshi Kaneshiro went away disappointed though. True to his reputation, this elusive superstar managed to dodge the cameras and despite the best efforts of screaming fans, he only gave a quick smile and wave before being whisked away.

The moody prince
By Mak Mun San

Looks aren't everything, of course, but when that person is the almost perfectly formed actor Takeshi Kaneshiro, then looks are definitely worth every precious inch of editorial space.
Sadly, though, looks are the only reason newspapers would want to feature the Japan-based actor.
For no other celebrity could possibly grant a more painful, boring, tedious interview, and yet get away with a cover story devoted solely to His Gorgeous Highness.
Despite -- or maybe because of -- his revulsion to interviews and the media in general, Kaneshiro remains one of Asia's biggest superstars, albeit a very reluctant one.
The last time he gave press interviews here was in 2003 to plug his movie Turn Left, Turn Right. Then, he was cold, elusive and irritable when he met Life! in an interview.
His uncooperative manner prompted correspondent Teo Pau Lin to liken the chat to a "painful leopard-crawl through a minefield".
It was deja vu all over again when Kaneshiro, 32, came to town on Monday to promote the new Peter Chan Mandarin musical movie, Perhaps Love.
This is the 34th movie in a career that has seen the son of a Japanese businessman and a Taiwanese housewife go from being a singer called Aniki Jin to acting mostly romantic roles. Besides his brooding good looks, his low, rumbling voice sends teenage girls into raptures.
When he was 15, he was recruited by a Taipei artiste management company to be a pop idol. But it was two years later before he appeared in his first soft drinks TV commercial.
Eva Yao, his long-time manager, told Time Asia magazine in 2003: "It took us two years to make him realise what he needed to do to be a pop star. I would have to explain a lot of things to make him understand why he couldn't smoke or why he had to cooperate."
He has clearly forgotten his early training.
Like in the last interview, the first thing you see at the interview is his back.
He stands gazing out of the window of an Oriental Hotel suite, MTV-style, seemingly deep in thought. He is tall and broad shouldered. It is a sight to set any fan's heart a-flutter.
But then, he suddenly raises his right hand and bangs repeatedly on the full-length glass panel.
This unexpected action is eerily reminiscent of a trapped animal yearning to escape from its cage.
It takes him a few seconds before he realises he is not alone in the room.
He tears himself away from the window, draws the curtain and sits down at the swivel chair at one end of the conference table.
He offers no handshake, just a faint smile and an almost indiscernible tilt of the head to acknowledge your presence.
His thick mop of hair is snipped fashionably with a neat fringe hovering nicely just above his bushy eyebrows. And then there are those trademark sideburns.
In his V-neck white T-shirt, black leather jacket and a pair of torn jeans, he looks every bit as beautiful as his movie self.
He would have scored 10 out of 10 if this publicity call to Singapore was based just on that, looks.
After all, his performance during an earlier press conference, held together with Chan, actress Zhou Xun and producer Andre Morgan, was close to perfect.
In front of more than 100 reporters from Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan, he oozed charm and fielded questions in Mandarin obligingly.
But our interview got off on the wrong footing when the Lianhe Zaobao reporter ignored repeated warnings from his minders earlier and asks him a personal question on the first try.
During the press conference, Kaneshiro had said that he could play the lead character Lin Jiandong, who is tortured by lost love for 10 years, because he has also been jilted before.
How many times has he been jilted in his life, asks the Zaobao reporter. There is no reply, just a non-commital "Oh".
The reporter does not give up. "This is very important," she says in a pleading voice.
"It's not important," he retorts with a chortle, "why would this be important?"
Then, he leans forward and challenges in a displeased tone: "What is the point of this question?"
It is the cue for his minder to jump in and remind us that only questions related to the movie will be entertained.
End of discussion.
The rest of the 12-minute conversation is largely painful, with him dishing out half-hearted, colourless quotes and us trying to pry into his jealously guarded inner sanctum by pretending to discuss his languid thoughts about the movie.
For example, when you ask if he thinks he can sing, he pauses, then says: "I don't think I sing very well."
You know you have failed in your nightmare assignment when the only snippets with an ounce of news value are that he also goes to karaoke lounges to sing sometimes, and that Hong Kong singer-actor Jacky Cheung, who is his co-star in Perhaps Love, is his idol.
He has an annoying habit of responding to your questions by repeating certain keywords in a disdainful voice, or smiling in a sneering way, or both.
Like when you ask if he thinks there is anything worth indulging 10 years of one's life, he pauses for a full five seconds before repeating "zhide?", which is Mandarin for worth.
"Everything is worth it, isn't it?" he mutters.
Then, he launches into a lengthy yet boring reply about why people indulge in things, before concluding: "So I guess for me, the only thing I've been indulging in this past 10 years is making movies. That's all."
Ironically, the most fascinating insight to the real Kaneshiro comes courtesy of someone else - Chan, who drew laughter at the press conference when he says he finds the dreamboat "very weird".
"He is so young and handsome. Why would he want to hole himself up in the room all the time? I really don't know what he is doing in there," says the director.
He goes on to reveal that there was once when Kaneshiro hid in his hotel room for a week when he was not needed at the movie set.
To this, the actor explains: "I was preparing for my role by submerging my face in the bathtub." There is a scene in the movie where he cries while floating in a swimming pool.
"I disliked crowds even before I became a star. Now, my family members and friends don't like to go out with me. They'll say, 'Let's stay at home instead'," he says.
"Actually, I do go out when I'm in the United States."
Then, Chan teasingly comments that he finds it hard to believe that someone as handsome as Kaneshiro can understand the pain of being out of love.
That was when the heart-throb claims he has been jilted before, too.
"What's the use of being handsome?" he muses loudly.
Indeed.

"Perhaps Love" Pockets 18 Million Yuan at Box Office
CRI Exclusive by Chen Ying---The first Chinese musical in four decades, "Perhaps Love (http://en.chinabroadcast.cn/349/2005/09/22/Zt60@21128.htm)" has received 18 million Yuan in box office earnings since it opened in cinemas across China on the 1st of December.

The number makes a new record for domestic cinema of the romance genre in recent years.
Shanghai cinemas top the box office, boasting 2.7 million in ticket sales during the first weekend.
The film has drawn all ages of audiences and enjoyed wide recognition both from audiences and film critics.
The love triangle's international cast stars Hong Kong singer Jacky Cheung, South Korean actor Ji Jin-hee, Taiwanese-Japanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro and Chinese actress Zhou Xun.

Musical movie "Perhaps Love" hits box office record printResizeButton();* images/spacer.gif
Musical movie "Perhaps Love" with a Hong Kong (http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/data/hk.html) director set a box office record in China's mainland in its first week show since Dec. 1, bringing more than 18 million yuan (about 2.2 million US dollars).
The movie took in 2.7 million yuan (332,000 US dollars) in Shanghai (http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/data/province/Shanghai.html) in its first week, the largest proportion of the overall box office.
"Perhaps Love", featuring a triangle romance, is produced by renowned Hong Kong director Peter Chan Ho-sunis.
With a cost of 10 million US dollars, it brings together some renowned stars: Hong Kong singer and actor Jacky Cheung, Chinese actress Zhou Xun, Taiwan (http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/data/province/taiwan.html)-born Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Ji Jin-Hee, an actor from the Republic of Korea.
The film was chosen to conclude the prestigious Venice Film Festival, in September this year. And it was designated to represent Hong Kong to compete for an Oscar nomination for best foreign film.
The release of "Perhaps Love" ushered in a busy year-end period for China's market, when many movies are scheduled to be shown.

Prima donna or painfully shy?
By Wendy Teo
Electric New Paper
Publication Date: December 07, 2005
NO personal questions allowed, no photographs except during the photo call and no autographs.
These are the rules that come with meeting Takeshi Kaneshiro.
The 32-year-old Japanese-Taiwanese actor is known for the protective minders around him who take their duty of cocooning Takeshi very seriously.
He was in town yesterday with director Peter Chan and Chinese actress Zhou Xun to promote the movie Perhaps Love.
The movie stars Takeshi as actor Jiandong, who gets into a love triangle involving his actress ex-lover Sun Na (Zhou Xun) and her director boyfriend Nie Wen (Jacky Cheung).
Before the media conference at the Oriental Hotel yesterday afternoon, the emcee repeatedly reminded journalists not to take photographs until after the event.
And of course, there was the usual refrain: No personal questions, stick to the movie. (beh buti nga sa inyo tsismoso kasi kayong mga chinese reporters eh!nyahahaa!)
When Takeshi and gang were in China earlier to promote the movie, those restrictions had not gone down too well with the media there.
He was accused of prima donna behaviour, which was also what some publications here had alleged when he was in town in 2003 to promote the movie, Turn Left Turn Right.
But during the media conference, Takeshi's jovial mood bore no whiff of a super ego.
He answered questions politely, and responded good-naturedly to ribbing from director Peter.
DIRECTOR IMPRESSED
When Peter teased him about holing himself up in his room during filming, Takeshi joked that he had been busy preparing for some underwater scenes - 'I practised by sticking my head in the bathtub!'
Peter also told reporters that he had been very touched by Takeshi's acting as a lovelorn man.
'I'd never believe that anyone as good-looking as Takeshi could have done the heartbreak scenes so convincingly. He expressed even more pain than a person who's not good-looking!'
So could someone as gorgeous as Takeshi have experienced such heartbreak, we asked.
It was a question that was definitely in the 'forbidden' territory, one that would have raised alarm bells with his minders.
But the sky didn't fall.
Takeshi looked uncomfortable, but replied: 'Everyone must have had such an experience at some point in his life. Being good-looking doesn't help. There are many pretty women who go for average-looking men.'
The media restrictions got tighter during the small group interviews afterwards.
His unfriendly minder warned us at the door: 'Please do not ask any personal questions or you will have to leave the room immediately.'
Apparently, the previous interview had gone badly.
Takeshi was also not as cheerful now.
Nevertheless, he remained unfaultingly polite.
An early scene in Perhaps Love has Sun Na, Jiandong and Nie Wen at a press conference for their movie.
At one point, Jiandong grabs the mike and says: 'If you do not have intelligent questions for us, then we will end the press conference right now.'
It was a scene that could very well have been replayed in real life.
So was it a catharsis of his true feelings towards the media?
Takeshi was tickled by the suggestion and broke into hearty laughter.
'When we were doing the scene, we did ask the director whether we should do the same for our press conferences!'
On a more serious note, he added: 'Making the movie, then doing the publicity to let people know about our film, that's part and parcel of being an actor. I don't have to let people know about my personal life, that's not something I want to expose to the media.
'The focus should be on the movie. It's a form of respect to the actors, the director and the movie.'
So what does he think of all the restrictions his minders set in his name?
Isn't he worried that they make him seem very difficult?
Takeshi replied: 'Our perspectives are different. Why do I have to do all these things? If the flash bulbs go off in my face while I'm speaking, I get distracted. I just want to concentrate on the questions being asked.
'And as for autographs, I don't even sign my name that much in my daily life. I guess it's all in one's mentality, I don't think I'm putting on airs.'
In a separate interview with The New Paper, Peter spoke in Takeshi's defence.
The 43-year-old director admitted that he initially had apprehensions about working with him because of his shy nature.
But he stressed that Takeshi was no prima donna.
'He's just afraid of strangers. He doesn't pretend to be friendly, he's very sincere that way. And he's definitely not unfriendly. He's one of the more polite actors around. But it's just that on a personal level, he doesn't like crowds, he gets very nervous.'
Perhaps it just takes a while for Takeshi to warm up to people.
As our interview progressed, the actor seemed to relax.
On his kissing scenes with co-star Zhou Xun, Takeshi said bashfully: 'We both tried to be as professional as we could. It helped that we were not familiar with each other. Otherwise it would have been even more awkward for me!'
He also told us how he and Zhou Xun had a few retakes because their heads kept knocking into each other.
'We failed to discuss the technicality of whose head should angle which way during the kiss!' he chuckled.
After the interview, as he prepared to leave, Takeshi, the supposed prima donna, did the unexpected.
Folding his lanky self in a polite Japanese bow, he mouthed us a 'thank you', before breaking out into a wide boyish grin and giving us a tiny wave.
What prima donna?

By Wong Siew Ying, Channel NewsAsia
Award-winning director Peter Chan and producer Andre Morgan made history at the premiere of their musical comedy "Perhaps Love" this week.
Their film is the first Asian movie to premiere at the Victoria Theatre.
Its stellar cast included Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhou Xun and Korean actor Ji Jin-hee.
The musical also stars singing sensation Jacky Cheung.
Shot in Beijing and Shanghai, the US$10m production features spectacular sets, circus performance, Broadway-style music and songs.
It tells of a love triangle that develops during the making of a musical in China.
"Perhaps Love" has opened in cinemas.
The producer of the big budget film has this advice for Asian film makers who want to ply their trade in Hollywood.
Andre Morgan said: "Stay with your convictions, be brave and understand that opportunities only come to those people that believe. You have to have a dream." - CNA/ir

CINEMA: 'Double' Love Triangle
Sharon Wong (features@nst.com.my)
DEC 8: Perhaps Love
Directed by Peter Chan
Starring Jacky Cheung, Zhou Xun, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Jin Jin-hee with special appearance by Eric Tsang and Sandra Ng
WHEN the hype about a movie becomes too intense, chances are there would be some disappointments because of high expectations. Perhaps Love found itself in such a situation recently.
The movie opened with grandeur and continued to mesmerise viewers with spectacular sets and no-holds-barred costumes. There were also circus performers, Broadway-style song-and-dance sequences, and a touching love triangle.
However, some people found it rather flat, unrealistic and even meaningless. Then there were those who sang praises of it, relating to the hard knocks of reality and the beauty of love lost and found. For what it’s worth, I think director Peter Chan has definitely achieved his goal of drawing attention to his movie if such heated debates are anything to go by.
http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Thursday/Features/20051207145647/Article/Current_News/NST/Thursday/National/plove.jpgPerhaps Love, a US$10 million (RM66,000,000) production shot in Beijing and Shanghai, is both a musical and a love story. Set in a movie-within-a-movie style, it features a love triangle plot that parallels the actors’ lives. Jealousy, hatred and passion are punctuated by flamboyant songs and dances that tell the same story on screen. And flirting through events, linking them together in a fluid flow is Montage (Ji Jin-hee), a muse. You might find his presence — as different characters in different situations — a little amusing. Yet somehow, the movie would be incomplete without him.
The movie begins with a new musical helmed by renowned director Nie Wen (Jacky Cheung) bringing together two of the hottest stars of the times, Sun Na (Zhou Xun) and Lin Jian Dong (Takeshi Kaneshiro). Sun is to portray a girl who meets a circus owner after losing her memory and they eventually fall in love. But then her former lover appears and becomes the third party in the triangle. Little does Nie know how close his movie is to the real lives of his co-stars. Lin and Sun were lovers 10 years ago until Sun’s ambition and desire for fame caused her to abandon her love for greener pastures.
Today, Lin is still obsessed with her and is torn by feelings of love and jealousy and a desire for revenge. Takeshi’s portrayal of Lin’s pain is pointed.
Initially, Jacky Cheung’s character as the rather broody director doesn’t seem to carry much weight but towards the end, he manages to garner much sympathy as he discovers his love’s betrayal, which leads to one of the most spectacular scenes of the movie.
Zhou Xun, for all her beauty, is definitely the villain here and fingers wag at her ruthlessness, forgetting that she was also a victim in the past.
A mention must also be made of the special appearance by Eric Tsang as the musical’s backer and Sandra Ng as Takeshi’s agent, who are like a breath of fresh air every time they appear.
And as the movie weaves through past and present, real and celluloid, you marvel at how well everything gels together. The fusion and the flashbacks are smoothens the journey into a wonderfully different world that is Perhaps Love.

Expert tips on making films
By CLARA CHOOI
/archives/2005/12/10/central/m_16peter.jpg Chan ... 'make sure key crew members understand your vision for the movie'
FILMMAKING is like raising a baby you plan its future, nurture the key values and watch it grow.
Critically acclaimed Hong Kong film director Peter Ho-Sun Chan drove home this message to local amateur filmmakers during a forum at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur recently.
His recently released movie, Perhaps Love, is reputedly the biggest musical production that has come out from China and Hong Kong in 35 years.
The US$10mil (RM38mil) production premiered here on Dec 2 and is Hong Kong's entry in the Best Foreign Language category of the 78th Academy Awards next year.
The film has already won many awards at international fests, including Best Foreign Language Film Award at the Queens International Film Festival in New York last month.
Chan has also won several accolades in his own right, including for Best Film for his 1991 directional debut, Alan & Eric: Between Hello and Goodbye at the Directors' Guild of Hong Kong and an unprecedented nine awards at The Hong Kong Film Awards in 1987, including Best Film and Director for his famed work Comrades: Almost a Love Story.
During the forum, Chan gave amateur filmmakers several pointers on how to make a successful film, one of which is the importance of building a good relationship with the movie crew to ensure there are no glitches during filming.
Make sure that your key crew members understand your vision for the movie, he said, referring to scriptwriters, lighting and props crew and costume designers, among others.
You must sell them your ideas so that they will be able to place your vision on the silver screen, he said.
Asked if his fusion of different Asian elements in Perhaps Love was to show Hollywood the Asian way to success, Chan said this was not his intention.
/archives/2005/12/10/central/m_16perhaps.jpg Takeshi Kaneshiro in Chan's Perhaps Love.
I like building a collaboration among the different Asian markets.
Why can't we talent and market swap? We know that one country alone is too small to make it on its own, he said.
The movie is about making a musical in Shanghai and a love triangle that surfaced during the shooting. It stars Ji Jin-Hee, Eric Tsang, Sandra Ng, Zhang Ming, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Jacky Cheung and Zhou Xun.
Chan said while the film is about making a musical, he refuted suggestions that Perhaps Love is a musical.
He said he only used music and songs to enhance the emotions of the actors in the film and not because it was a musical.
When a filmmaker at the forum criticised Perhaps Love as lacking depth and the love triangle depicted in the movie could not be applied to everyone, Chan responded: Love is love everywhere. If the characters or the love in the movie seemed wishy-washy, it is only because love is that way with many people.

MOVIES: Nothing personal
By CHOW EE-TAN
Dec 13: THE Press knew that it was going to be a strict event, being reminded over and over again to not ask anything personal or anything not related to the movie.
And yes, no photographs were allowed except during a group photo call session.
These restrictions were expected as one of the stars of Perhaps Love was Takeshi Kaneshiro, known for being not exactly media friendly.
However, while he seemed a little distant, he was pleasant enough, smiling most of the time.
His co-star Zhou Xun, however, who plays the ambitious actress Sun Na, appeared to be more stingy in her replies.
She also seemed a little less amiable than Takeshi. They were in town recently with director Peter Chan and producer Andrew Morgan as part of the movies promotional tour.
When the entourage entered the hotel meeting room, photographers rushed forward to take photos only to be told off sternly.
No photographs now. Do you understand English? chided the emcee who was handling the English part of the Press conference.
The enthusiasm of the media could be understood. After all, the dashing Takeshi had not come to Malaysia in 12 years.
The pint-sized Zhou Xun only managed a feeble Malaysia is very pretty and the food is very good, when she was asked what she thought of Malaysia (it was her first visit, by the way).
Obviously, the Press was also more interested in Takeshi, who plays actor Lin Jian Dong (a staunch believer of love) in Perhaps Love. He took the bulk of the questions.
Since he handled his character in the film well, who was a heartbroken downcast soul, one could not help but wonder if he drew from his personal experience.
Takeshi however, modestly gave credit to his director and co-stars who he said inspired him.
We complement each other... The acting by the others in the cast also motivated me. Everything turned out so naturally we didnt have to force anything. Perhaps the cold weather also helped make me feel sad! Takeshi said.
Of all his scenes in the movie, the most memorable one was the artistic underwater scene. In that scene, a big tear falls out from Takeshis eye.
The tear was real. It was not a CGI (computer generated image). But I had to let many tears out before getting the desired shot.
Chan chipped in and praised Takeshi for his seriousness and hard work in studying his role.
It was him who enlightened me in many instances, Chan said. I was a bit worried at first as he seemed so quiet. But he asked a lot of questions and he thinks a lot. One can see that he really loves making movies.
That probably explains why Takeshi, who is also a popular singer in Japan, has not released any album for many years. And he has no plans of working on an album soon.
I fell in love with the movies ever since I started working on them.
So I decided to put singing aside to concentrate on my acting, he said.
To him, singing in Perhaps Love was fun but his only regret was not being able to do a duet with Cheung.
Could he relate to his on-screen character who could not forget a lover of 10 years?
Takeshi said there are some similarities between him and Lin.
Perhaps because Ive seen much more now, my views on love have changed over the years.
You have to love yourself first, he said. And no, he is also not so adamant about love as Lin.
You cant force love. You have to let her make a choice, he said.
In Zhou Xuns case, her views on love merely echoed what Takeshi had said.
One of the questions posed to her was whether she needed a director or a companion.
She paused for a while and cleverly but indirectly replied that she would choose Nie Wen (Jacky Cheungs character) because Cheung, in the film, was already both a director and her companion.
The actress, who has a singing and dancing background, said she didnt find doing the musical bits difficult and she had a lot of fun working on the film.
In Perhaps Love, Sun Na is an aspiring actress who chose to give up true love for her ambition, and in the process she slept with directors to reach where she was.
A gutsy journalist posed two questions, firstly to Chan: In your opinion, how many actors you know have slept with the director? and then to Takeshi and Zhou Xun: If you were Sun Na, would you sleep with the director in order to be famous?
To that, Chan laughed and said: Do you mean actors or actresses?
However, the English-speaking emcee obviously found the question offensive and before anyone could reply further, she announced coldly : Next question!
Was it personal? Wasnt the question related to the movie? The Press members could swear that Chan and probably Takeshi were willing to give their answers.
And the emcee could have been more tactful and courteous too.
So the next and last question was asked, on what movie Takeshi is working on next.
He didnt give a definite reply.
Alas, the most interesting questions asked during that short 20-minute press conference were snubbed.

In Tokyo, 'Geisha' is just a love story
'Memoirs of a Geisha' wins praise, despite controversy over casting Chinese actresses in Japanese roles.
By Bennett Richardson
TOKYO "Memoirs of a Geisha," released in Japan this week as "Sayuri," is little more than a simple love story on one level. It traces the intrigues and rivalries among the women engaged in the lonely and demanding discipline of being a professionally trained singer, dancer, and entertainer for men in Kyoto's entertainment district.
But the decision to cast Chinese actresses in many of the main roles has caused ripples on both sides of the East China Sea, coming as it does amid tensions over Japan's and China's views of Japan's brutal World War II history.
Zhang Ziyi, a Chinese, plays the lead role of a peasant girl sold into a geisha house who struggles to win her livelihood as well as the hand of the man she loves.
In the end, though, the unrequited love story in "Memoirs" - played out between Ms. Zhang's character and a man played by Japanese actor Ken Watanabe - appears likely to win over audiences here. In contrast to some lukewarm US reviews, film critics here gave top marks to the lead Chinese actresses.
On a recent evening in Tokyo's Ginza theater district, viewers almost unanimously praised the film. Ms. Zhang's Japanese accent was a little off the mark, perhaps. And yes, Michelle Yeoh's kimono was slightly too loose for the Malaysian Chinese actress. But those were small quibbles.
"I really enjoyed it. I think the view that Chinese actresses can't play Japanese roles is unwarranted," says Sumiko Kuroiwa, a magazine editor.
Pensioner Fumiko Shirano says she will recommend the film to her friends. The furor over the casting is probably due to the recent tensions with China, she says, but "the movie itself is really good."
Hideki Fukui, who is self-employed, was impressed by the cinematography. He doesn't understand the criticism over the casting. Having Chinese play Japanese characters and vice versa "is a good thing," he says.
Perhaps the most unequivocal rebuttal of the criticisms emerged in the understated act of a former geisha who reportedly sent Zhang several antique kimonos. Although younger generations consider gift-giving a sign of respect and gratitude, at a deeper level in Japan's traditionally group-oriented society, the exchange of gifts symbolically placed the giver and receiver in the same group.
The gift of kimonos from a former geisha conveys a powerful message: We are in the same group - be that geisha, the objects of men's desire, professionals in the entertainment industry, or simply Asians in general.
The cultural crosscurrents swirling around "Memoirs" reflect a tumultuous year for China-Japan relations.
To be sure, the film skirts the issue of Japan's wartime actions by only briefly mentioning Manchuria and limiting scenes of soldiers to the shuttering of the Gion entertainment district in Kyoto. But the fact that Japanese audiences are viewing the movie as as a period-piece love story serves as a testament to Chinese-Japanese cooperation, and contrasts with the often self-flagellating attitudes of many Japanese politicians concerning any clash over the region's war history.
And cross-cultural casting is nothing new when it comes to portraying Japanese or Chinese characters. Chinese-Americans such as Lucy Liu and Kelly Hu have played Japanese roles, and Takeshi Kaneshiro, who is half
Japanese, has a long history of playing Chinese roles because of his language skills. In the 2004 hit, "House of Flying Daggers" he played opposite Zhang - and the film generated none of the controversy surrounding "Memoirs."
"Japanese and Chinese cultures are different, but that makes no difference as to whether a Chinese can play the role of a geisha," says Yao Xinxin, a Chinese exchange student studying in Tokyo. "Nobody thinks that the many Japanese actors who appear in Chinese films are incapable" of portraying Chinese characters.
"I don't think it's offensive to China that Ms. Zhang took the role," and 80 to 90 percent of the commentary about "Memoirs" on Chinese websites express a similar view, she says. "On the contrary, I think it's wonderful that she can display her acting skills" and portray some of the positive aspects of humanity in a love story.
Others say some cultural blurring is inevitable because the film is a US production. "A Chinese person probably can't fully understand what it was like to be a geisha," says Yeh Pi-Hsuan, a Taiwanese exchange student. "So it might have been better to use a Japanese actress, but I guess it's OK considering that it's a Hollywood movie."

Male Stars " Kept-price" Vic chou Takeshi at top of the list
Article: 15th December 2005
Source: http://big5.chinabroadcast.cn/gate/big5/gb.../108@821717.htm
Regarding to matter of the exposure of the so-called male stars being "kept and looked after", some showbiz insiders told the reporter, since it is a routine matter for female stars who suffer from rich men asking their kept prices, then actually male stars do have rich women pursuing them, and at different era, different candidates.
As early as in on century 80's, it was rumored in the entertainment circle there was a similar so-called with clearly marked priced Kept list.
At that time ranked first was Leslie Cheung because of his delicate and pretty appearance that had deeply drawn the females affections, he had been offered a price by a rich woman of HK$10M - 16M, he was the top out of all males. Simon Yam was offered HK$9.6M, then it was Alan Tam 9M, ??? 8.4 M and Andy Lau 8M.

Perhaps Love 10 years Takeshi frankly said difficult
Article: 16th December 2005
Source: http://news.chinatimes.com/Chinatimes/news...1600363,00.html
In PL Takeshi loved Zhou for 10 years, to portray their strong love they had, the two had quite a few hot kiss scenes. When first accepted this role Takeshi said the most difficult part was to express the change within the 10 years, when asked if in live he was a long sentiment in this way, love someone for as long as 10 years? He said frankly that he wouldnt, he would remember her, cares for her like a friend, but not love her. And asked if he and Zhou had been "fake acting, genuine emotions" while making PL? He emphasized they didnt, but when making the movie they were really into the roles, so when it comes to the intimate scenes they didnt feel embarrassed.

NEW YORK Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe and actor Takeshi Kaneshiro were among those who will make headlines in 2006 in politics, business (http://www.japantoday.com/e/?content=news&cat=1&id=358916#), science and the arts, Newsweek magazine said Sunday in its annual "Who's Next."
"Japan's political elite is already trying to figure out who's going to become the next prime minister in September 2006, when Junichiro Koizumi must step down," the magazine said. "Right now the smart money says it will be Abe, 51." The magaizne said that Kaneshiro is an Asian star like no other. "He is fluent in Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese and English (http://www.japantoday.com/e/?content=news&cat=1&id=358916#). He also combines well-honed dramatic skills; a classic, refined handsomeness, and the versatile appeal necessary to lure filmgoers throughout the vast region into cinemas."

SHARON WONG[/email]
Dec 21: Perhaps Love heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro has more than just good looks, with director Peter Chan praising his talent and dedication as an actor. SHARON WONG writes.
[Blocked Ads] ("]Takeshi for real
[email="news@nst.com.my) IT has been more than 12 years since Takeshi Kaneshiro has been to Malaysia and naturally, fans and curious onlookers alike grabbed the opportunity to see the Japanese-Taiwanese heartthrob when he was in town to promote his new movie Perhaps Love.
When asked the reason for the long absence, the handsome actor said the opportunity just never presented itself.
This short trip, he added, gave him a chance to see again the beautiful country of Malaysia.
Takeshi, who first burst upon the entertainment scene in 1992 as a singer, has gone on to carve out a niche for himself as an actor. Today, he is not only a much sought-after actor in Hong Kong, he is also a big star in Taiwan and Japan.
"After my first movie, I realised that I much prefer acting. As a result, I decided to put singing on hold. I wanted to learn more about acting.
"It was great fun having the chance to sing again in Perhaps Love. My only regret was that I did not have the opportunity to sing with Jacky Cheung but still, it was very satisfying. However, I have no plans to release albums again."
As for the character he portrayed in Perhaps Love as someone who is obsessed with one woman for 10 years Takeshi admitted that there were indeed some similarities, for instance, the growing process of the character.
"I relate to how he thinks about love 10 years ago. As we grow, our perspective changes. We change all the time. To fully understand love, I think you need to love and understand yourself first."
With his doe eyes and good looks, Takeshi is perfect for those lovelorn roles. Where the emotional scenes in the movie are concerned, he gives credit to the director for being able to draw him into the part.
"A good director helps. An excellent cast is also important. Zhou Xun helped me a lot in bringing out the emotions. Even the climate the dark and dull atmosphere, snowy weather and the cold all helped to create this sad and forlorn situation.
"Many outside factors contribute to the ultimate success of a movie. If a film causes the audience to cry or if a comedy causes them to laugh, then it is a success."
While Takeshi credited director Peter Chan for helping him flesh out the role, the latter felt that it was the other way around.
When Takeshi was filming Wong Kar Wais Chungking Express and Fallen Angels about 10 years ago, the director had spoken highly of his depth and versatility, not to mention his dedication to film-making. It was reported that Takeshi collaborated on ideas for certain scenes.
For Perhaps Love, Chan saw the same motivation in the actor.
"Initially, Takeshi was rather quiet and seemed worried about his role. He asked a lot of questions and it was obvious that he did a lot of thinking about his character.
"Through all my years of film-making, I have come across actors who would have their own opinions but not one as totally submerged into his role as Takeshi."
The director also discovered something about Takeshi as filming progressed.
"Takeshis character is that of a man who is sick ... thats not the right word. Hes obsessed, damaged and has not grown since the age of 21. Hes emotionally frozen and this is shown through the underwater scenes.
"We discovered that he has a special feel for the water. As a result, we gave it more duration and it became a romantic filter for the movie.
"The tear he shed while hanging upside down was real. It took numerous shots and numerous tears to get it to land just right but he did it."
A man of few words and an elusive figure it is a well known fact that Takeshi is always reluctant to be in the spotlight in the Chinese entertainment circle, he guards his privacy closely.
Perhaps it stemmed from being born of Taiwanese and Japanese parents, which caused some problems for him during his childhood. He was often bullied at school and had difficulty fitting in, feeling like an outsider in school and in his neighbourhood.
But his mixed background also gave him an opportunity to become fluent in several languages like Mandarin, Japanese and English.
Being good-looking helped open doors for him. Takeshi started making commercials while still in school. At the age of 15, he was offered an opportunity to be a pop star. In 1992, he released his debut album and was on his way to becoming a teen idol.
The big screen soon beckoned and he appeared in such films as Chungking Express (1994), Fallen Angels (1995), and Lost And Found (1996). It was not long before he was also spotted by a Japanese TV producer. His subsequent role in the mini-series God Please Give Me More Time (1998), about a musician who falls in love with an HIV-positive girl, shot him to superstardom and ignited his Japanese film career.
Other blockbuster films followed, including Sleepless Town (Japanese, 1998), Space Travellers (Japanese, 2000), Tempting Heart (Hong Kong, 1999) opposite Gigi Leung, and Lavender (Hong Kong, 2000), with Kelly Chen.
More recently, Takeshi starred in the 2002 Japanese box office hit The Returner, and worked opposite Leung again in the Hong Kong flick Turn Left, Turn Right (2003).
