Wang Lee-hom, 33, accused Indian filmmakers of plagiarizing his music and is seeking US$320,000 in damages, his agent said on Wednesday.
The US-born singer, popular throughout Southeast Asia, is seeking damages from Tips Films, distributor of the Hindi film Race, which was released in March, Sony BMG Music Entertainment Ltd said.
Sony BMG said it reserves the right to take legal action against Race's distributor for plagiarism.
"The lead song in Race, Zara Zara Touch Me, resembles Wang's song Deep in the Bamboo Grove, Sony BMG said in a statement. "Its rhythm and tempo are similar to that of Deep in the Bamboo Grove. The similarity is nearly 100 percent."
Race has been shown in India, the US, Britain, Australia and Malaysia, and its sound track has been released in those countries.
Deep in the Bamboo Grove is part of Wang's CD The Sun and Moon in My Heart, a collection of 12 Chinese-language songs released in December 2004. The song mixes a Tibetan woman's singing with hip-hop and Chinese drums and flutes.

The Olympic torch relay, a symbol of peace across continents, has traditionally been carried out by mostly athletes, but it has evolved overtime to involve politicians, ordinary citizens, and celebrities.
The Beijing 2008 Olympics, touted as the biggest torch relay so far, covers over 137,000 kilometres with the flame exchanging between some 21,880 pairs of hands in more than 20 countries.
It has also seen a large turnout of Asian celebrities who have attracted much attention to the Games from non-sports fans.
The first big name in the Asian entertainment scene to carry the torch was Chinese-American singer-songwriter Wang Leehom.
Wang, who also attended the ignition ceremony on March 24 in Olympia, Greece, was the seventeenth runner in the entire relay.
The “Lust, Caution” star said via live feed from Greece that he had exercised for two weeks to prepare for his big day, and had even cut his hair to give an impression of good health. The actor also said that the "once in a life time experience" would most probably "inspire the direction of his music".
The international round saw stars turning up in force to support the flame.
Popular Korean singer-actress Jang Nara carried the torch in Seoul in the South Korea leg of the relay on April 27, joined by fellow Korean singer Bada and actress Ko Ah-ra.
Malaysian singer Rynn Lim was the sole entertainer in his country to carry the torch as it made its round through Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong singer-actress Miriam Yeung took part in the Macau leg of the relay.
Yeung, who had been training hard, proudly told the media that prior to the race, she was already able to do some 12 kilometres an hour, although she would only be doing about 200 metres with the flame at a slow jog during her stint with the torch.
Hong Kong’s turn in the relay saw an impressive list of stars who turned up to run with the flame.
One of the four 'Heavenly Kings' of Cantonese pop music in Asia, Andy Lau, ran the fourth leg of the Olympic torch relay in Hong Kong.
After countless live concert performances and movie roles which saw the 46-year-old execute great confidence to pull off just about anything, the Hong Kong superstar admitted he experienced a rare “stage fright” before and during his 200-metre leg.
Lau called the experience one of the most “precious moments in his life”.
The avid sports fan has even managed to snap up tickets to the Olympics opening ceremony and a few semi-final events, although he expressed disappointment at failing to attain tickets for his favourite sports - volleyball and diving.
Another recognisable face in the Hong Kong entertainment scene, Eason Chan carried the torch through the Shatin Racecourse in Hong Kong while singer Kelly Chen completed her 200-metre run at Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Other stars who graced the relay included singer Leo Ku, swimmer-turned-actor and singer Alex Fong, as well as actress Liza Wang.
Another 'Heavenly King', Jackie Cheung, rounded up the celebrity line-up as Hong Kong's 116th runner, relaying the Wan Chai Road section.
Even as the torch left Hong Kong to tour Mainland China, Hong Kong celebrities continued to make their presence felt in the flame's journey.
Acclaimed actor and director Jackie Chan, who has already had a taste of running with the torch in the 2004 Athens Olympics, made several appearances with the flame.
The 54-year-old was involved in lighting the cauldron at Sanya's Tianya Haijiao on May 4 in China's Hainan province, the first destination in the torch's relay through Mainland China.
Chan also ran his leg of the relay in Sanya, as well as another with Pu Huifang, the head of a small town in Sanya. Chan is rumoured to take on yet another leg of the relay when the torch makes its final journey through Beijing.
Singers Li Shengjie and Emil Chow, as well as "Rush Hour" actress Zhang Ziyi also had their turns with the flame in Hainan.
Hong Kong singer-actress Karen Mok carried the torch through the Three Gorges Dam in central China's Hubei province a day ahead of her birthday, June 2.
She told reporters it was the "greatest honour of her life to pass on the torch" and the most "wonderful gift she has received" for her birthday.
Shanghai, the most populated city in China, also did not scrimp in its star appearances.
Jane Zhang, third place winner of the 2005 season of China's Super Girl singing contest, along with Chinese actresses Gao Yuan Yuan and Li Bing Bing, as well as "Red Cliff" star Tony Leung took the torch through the city along with 412 other torch bearers.
The Beijing part of the relay, also the final leg of the torch's journey before the lighting of the cauldron at the Beijing National Stadium, will perhaps see the most star-studded line-up of all.
Day one of three of the torch's journey through the capital saw acclaimed Chinese film-maker Zhang Yimou run his part with his trademark crew cut as number 86, followed by internationally recognised Chinese pianist Lang Lang.
Singapore's home-grown star Lin Jun Jie (JJ Lin), reportedly the only Singaporean to run in the final leg of the relay also ran on the same day.
The singer was initially supposed to run on the day of the opening ceremony, August 8, but recent security concerns in China amid terrorist threats changed the line-up.
Not only was the date altered, the route was also shortened and Lin ran less than 40 metres as compared to the original 400m.
Initially, the 27-year-old had told Channelnewsasia.com that representing Singapore on an international level on the eve of national day was symbolic and a "huge responsibility".
"It's a huge responsibility as I carry a lot on my shoulders,” said Lin. “I'm representing Singapore in the international arena in a way, and that is really meaningful to me."
The star also reckoned that the reason for celebrities like himself, and basically “everybody else” who registered to take part in the relay was because it was the closest they could get to being a physical part of the Olympics as non-sportspersons.
He said in Mandarin: “I will remember every single step that I took in this relay because this event can possibly be said as the most memorable in my life.”
China-born Han Geng of Korean boy band Super Junior would also be participating in the torch relay in Beijing.
Organisers said the 24-year-old was chosen "as they recognised his part in the cultural exchange of China through his activities in Korea and the rest of Asia".
The torch will reach Beijing National Stadium, affectionately known as the ‘Bird’s Nest’ for its shape, on August 8.
The flame will light the Olympics cauldron precisely at 8:08pm, followed by what has been crowned as the “most spectacular Olympics Opening Ceremony ever produced” with performances by a star-studded cast of 15,000.

http://www.jackiechan.com/blog/207369--Oly...Meeting-Kenny-G (http://www.jackiechan.com/blog/207369--Olympic-Duties--Meeting-Kenny-G)
I was the 208th torch bearer for this leg of the Olympic flame relay. In the morning, I waited at the venue in preparation for the relay and ended up waiting for about five or six hours. I saw many friends at the event and I saw Leehom Wang again so while we were waiting, we sat down and had a chat together.
Leehom Wang is an artist that I admire very much because he is one very talented, gifted, and skillful person. I actually think the heavens above have been too good to him and haven’t been very fair with the rest of us! Why would I say something like that? Well, once you get to see what Leehom Wang looks like and watch him perform, I think you’ll understand why I said that. Let me try to describe a few things about him here. Starting with his appearance, he has the looks of a handsome and charming gentleman; as for his figure, he is tall, fit, and slim; about his talents, he knows how to compose songs, write lyrics, rearrange and edit songs, and also has a very nice voice so he sings really well; about his language skills, he knows how to speak fluent Mandarin and English, and he even knows how to speak a little Cantonese; about his musical skills, he knows how to play the piano, guitar, violin, and drums; about his physical abilities, he knows how to dance and perform Chinese kung fu. After reading my descrīption of Leehom Wang, I think you might also be asking why the heavens have been so kind to him, gifting him with so many skills and talents. It’s like the love and affection from tens of thousands of Gods were all gathered together and put into his body. He’s an amazing guy (but I still think it’s not fair to the rest of us ha ha ha).
While I was getting prepared and waiting for event organizers to call me for the relay, I saw Leehom sitting to one side. He was making use of his spare time, composing a new song while he was waiting. He’s definitely one very hard-working artist. Since I had the chance, I started taking a few photos of him but before I could finish, someone called me to get ready for the relay, so I immediately put down my camera and quickly prepared for the run.

waaaaaaaah! mission accomplished...at last na-recognized ni lee hom ang philippines nung concert. We thought wala nang pag-asa na mapansin kami ( i wonder if he didn't recognized our flag hahahaha..) di kse umabot yung light panel kaya di kami masyadong pansinin...Thanks to our malaysian friends (esp. to Fong) and other fans (di ko matandaan kung sino pa) tinulungan kaming isigaw ang PHILIPPINES...Lee Hom said " Oh! Philippines" tas may sinasabi sya sa amin in mandarin (di namin naintindihan..napagkamalan kaming lahat na chinese). Pinatranslate na lang namin sa friend namin..he said pala na Philippines is just 1 hr travel to taiwan..something like that..grabe nagtatatalon kami sa tuwa..hahaha di ko na alam kung napakita kami sa wide screen..basta ang naalala ko lang he really smiled to us...waaaaaah!

Leehom Wang co-operates with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and will be the conductor
Leehom Wang yesterday held a press conference, and announced that from December 22nd – 24th, he will co-operate with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre to hold a “HK. Leehom Wang Concert”. Besides singing, he will also play the violin and also be the conductor for the orchestra. This will be his first time being conductor, and evidently, he feels pressure, but he thinks of this as the best Christmas present for himself. He said that although he cannot work with his idol conductor Leonard Bernstein, who has passed away, instead, he will work with one of his pupils, Gerard Salonga, and Leehom believes he will learn a lot of Bernstein’s techniques from him.
Lately, many people have been dragged down by the financial tsunami, and lost a lot of money on the stock market. Leehom said that he only understands to invest in computers and musical instruments, so this did not really affect him. He smiled and said that musical artists don’t really understand the concept of money, and rather his mum will deal with this. So has he bought any houses? Leehom replied, “I only live in one house, and concentrate on making music!”

People have seen Lee-Hom Wang play the guitar, bass, piano, violin, drums and erhu. But, adding to the list is his new instrument - the baton.
The Chinese-American musician will conduct Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra for three shows scheduled between December 22 and 24, the orchestra's chief executive Timothy Calnin announced at a recent press conference.
Accepting a baton especially made for him, Lee-Hom said it was like an early Christmas present. He hoped attendees of the concerts would also think of the shows as a wonderful Christmas gift.
Having been trained at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Lee-Hom said he was not a stranger to the orchestral podium, and that he was looking forward to the shows where he will collaborate with Gerard Salonga, whose musical influences include Lee-Hom's idol, the late conductor Leonard Bernstein.
The concerts will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Center Concert Hall, with tickets being sold at HK$220-580 (US$28-75).

Madali silang nagka-vibes dahil pareho silang graduate ng Berklee College of Music in Boston....

He used to live under the shadow of his sister Lea, but now Gerard Salonga is definitely on his own as a much respected conductor. No less than French singer Vanessa Paradis, wife of Hollywood actor Johnny Depp, called him up to say she wants him to be her musical director in "Le French May," the biggest French Arts Festival to be held in Asia in May, 2009. Venue is Hong Kong, where Gerard will also conduct the New Year’s Eve concert of the 110-piece Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (with American and British musicians) as part of their year-end finale to be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
...
In Hong Kong, Gerald will work with Lee Hom Wang, the Taiwanese American singer-songwriter who has won the Golden Melody Award four times and is a big name in Japan, China and Taiwan.
"We already met and we got along fine right away as we’re both graduates of the Berklee College of Music in Boston."

A Unique Rehearsal Exeperience
When I heard that Gerard Salonga was going to work with Leehom, I immediately looked for a way to contact him and let him know that Leehom has fans here in the Philippines and we were really excited for the first ever collaboration with a Filipino artist. I got to contact him and ended up helping him out with the Leehom stuff like recommending some of his songs, looking for lyrics and translations and some of his performances on youtube. He was saying that the concert will totally be a different one because Leehom was going to be performing differently from his other concerts. But sadly no more tickets were left for December 22 (the only day I can surely go). I asked him if there was a chance of meeting Leehom if ever I go to Hong Kong to meet him and he said yes probably during the rehearsal. I was so happy to know that he can get me in the rehearsal that I got my parents to let me go again for another overseas trip without them. Last time I went abroad was to watch the MUSIC-MAN concerts in Taipei last September with my friends. This time I went with my brother who is a professional photographer (and he takes the best photos!) He was going to document and capture Gerard doing his work. I was scared I wouldn't be able to go because I got sick the week before we were scheduled to leave. I felt a lot better two days before we were about to leave. I wouldn't miss this chance just because I got sick!
December 21, Sunday:
We woke up early to get ready to meet up with Gerard and go to Tuen Mun Town Hall Auditorium. We arrived early got to see the stage being set up. After less than an hour, Leehom arrived in his white shirt, jacket, jeans and boots. It was my third time to see him but not this close and he looked so natural. First thing I thought that he was too skinny! ...and he was wearing his glasses! We didn't have the chance to take photos because we weren't allowed.
They started off the rehearsal with Leehom's songs first. The arrangement for 放開你的心 was really good. I'm glad Gerard pulled it off very well. They also played Kiss Goodbye, Forever Love, 一首簡單的歌, Last Night and Everything. It was really nice to see him play my favorite songs live. I'm also glad he chose to play Last Night since it's one of my favorite English songs and I really loved it when played with the guitar. As for Everything, I really felt lucky to hear him sing the full version of the unreleased song. He sang a bit of it during the concert but it was only accompanied by the piano. Hearing it with the whole string ensemble made it a whole lot more special.
Aside from his songs, he also sang Jingle Bell Rock and Mi Mancherai. I was looking forward to hearing him sing Mi Mancherai as soon as I heard that he was going to sing it. He wasn't satisfied at his first attempt so while we had our 1 hour break, he kept on practicing along with the piano.
We got back and it was time for the classical pieces and the conducting. Honestly, I have to admit, I found the conducting very funny. He really needs more lessons, practice and tons of experience to be as good as Gerard. I could see he was having a hard time but watching him conduct Mambo, he looked like he was enjoying it. Leehom also did one classical violin solo and another piece to conduct. Then they finished the remaining songs, 龍的傳人, 盖世英雄 and finally 落葉歸根. Eventually it was already time to pack up and go home. I had fun watching but was kinda disappointed that I didn't get to meet Leehom. I was hoping the next day would be better. It was.
December 22, Monday:
I was planning on going to the HKCC an hour before the rehearsal but because we went out shopping first, we ended up arriving just 30 minutes before it started. We arrived and saw that a lot of people were already there setting up the stage and their instruments. Found myself a nice position while my brother was getting permission to take photos. The rehearsal officially started right after Leehom gave a message to the orchestra. They followed the song list already. They started it off with Mambo. 盖世英雄, 一首簡單的歌, and Mi Mancherai came next. He got off the stage while the orchestra played their own classical piece. Last Night was up next. The guitar he used didn't sound that good when connected to the amp. Next songs were Forever Love and 放開你的心. He ran up the makeshift stairs toward the organ and played his piece. After he was done, it was time for the break.
I was hesitating to go up the makeshift stairs but I eventually went up to go to my brother who was up there because he was taking photos. By the time I saw him, he was talking to Bruce about their cameras. My brother introduced me to Bruce and right after Leehom already came down from the organ. My brother complimented Leehom and his organ playing skills. Leehom thanked him and shook his hand while my brother introduced himself. Leehom then turned to me and shook my hand as well. He then asked us if we were the people who arranged the songs for Gerard. My brother told him no we weren't and we were just Gerard's assistants. He then told us that he thinks Gerard is really good. I just had to agree and said yeah. He then went down to go back to work.
After the break, they started off with 龍的傳人, and Everything. The orchestra then played another classical piece. Next classical piece had Leehom play a violin solo. It was followed with two more of his songs, 落葉歸根 then Kiss Goodbye. He then sang Jingle Bell Rock. I loved this one especially the end part where he says "Merry Christmas Hong Kong!" in a cute voice. They ended with another classical piece which Leehom conducted. His conducting got better compared to the day before. The rehearsal wasn't over yet. They had to do Last Night and the end of 放開你的心 again. Leehom got the guitar he used the day before and decided to use it instead. It did sound a lot better than the first guitar. I felt so lucky to watch him perform Last Night live. They also had to test the timing for the run up to the organ again. After the end of 放開你的心, he ran up the stairs, had to remove his boots then play the organ. It took him a long time to remove them that the timing was off. I was glad they pulled it off during the actual concerts. Then it was the end of the rehearsal.
I handed Gerard the card I made for him on behalf of OurHome Philippines. I was still thinking how to hand Leehom the card and letters we prepared for him. After my brother got photos of Gerard, we headed to the back stage and thought we should leave already. I decided to go back on stage to just hand the stuff to Bruce since Leehom was still busy talking with some of the musicians. As I was walking towards the center of the stage, Leehom suddenly appeared out of nowhere and was already in front of me. I said excuse me and handed him the envelopes when he turned around. He was probably surprised that I gave him something from the fan club so I decided to tell him that I was president of OurHome Philippines. He shook my hand again telling me it was a pleasure to meet me. He then asked me how I helped Gerard. I told him I helped him look for lyrics, videos and stuff. My mind stopped working. Then my brother saved the day and came along and asked Leehom if he can take photos of us. He gladly said yes and my brother got me nice photos. After we had the photos, I asked him if he can do a greeting for OurHome Philippines. He asked if I was prepared and I took out the video camera I've been dying to use the whole afternoon. He asked me to hand the camera over to Bruce since he always does it for him. After he did the video, he wanted to redo it because it was pretty noisy. As soon as we decided to move to a quieter place, he had to go back to work again. I didn't even had the chance to really thank him for everything. Leehom, if you're reading this, thank you so much for letting me get the best Christmas present I can give our fan club. http://www.leehom-ph.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif
It was a really nice experience to watch how a concert works behind the scenes. It was truly one of the best early Christmas presents I got.

Gerard Salonga goes global
By Bayani San Diego Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 21:32:00 01/01/2009
MANILA, Philippines—Just line his big sis Lea, musical director and conductor Gerard Salonga has gone international.
He recently worked with Taiwan’s Lee-Hom Wang, who topbilled Ang Lee’s “Lust, Caution” and soon, France’s Vanessa Paradis, who is, incidentally, the girlfriend of Johnny Depp.
The Hong Kong Philharmonic had tapped Salonga to conduct its yearend concert last Dec. 22, 23 and 24 at the HK Cultural Center Concert Hall.
Schoolmates
Featured performer in that show was Wang who, like Salonga, studied in Berkley.
“Lee-Hom’s a smart guy. He scored 1600 in his SATs (US college admissions exam),” said Salonga of his fellow musician. “He’s a pop star. He sings, but he [also] plays the piano, guitar and drums.”
At the concert, Wang reportedly played the violin, too.
Salonga, who conducted the entire concert, first worked with the HK Philharmonic for sister Lea’s Chinese New Year show last February.
He described the 110-piece orchestra as “one of the finest in Asia.”
The HK Philharmonic recommended Salonga to French superstar Paradis, who approved his participation as conductor and arranger in her own concert, which will coincide with the Le French May festivities this year.
“I submitted a demo, a new arrangement of her 1988 hit ‘Joe le Taxi.’ Luckily, she liked it,” Salonga recounted.
He said they instantly hit it off.
“She’s easy to talk to,” he noted. “She sounded sweet. Fortunately, we share the same tastes in music: Joni Mitchell, Bjork. She wants the arrangements for her May concert to be different from the usual.”
Seems sister Lea is also looking forward to the Paradis concert.
“My sister said, ‘Don’t do it if Johnny Depp isn’t coming to Hong Kong,’” Salonga said, in jest.
He added that Lea is scheduled to fly to Hong Kong in May.
“They’re planning to celebrate her baby Nicole’s birthday there, which falls around the same time as Le French May,” Salonga said.
On the local front, Salonga conducted the FILharmoniKa in the soundtrack of the Metro Manila Film Fest entry “Dayo,” which includes sis Lea’s song “Lipad.”
He also worked in the new albums of The CompanY (“Group Hug”), Reymond Sajor (“Coming Home”) and Eddie Mesa.

What do you get when you put an erudite author who loves music and an intelligent singer in love with language into a small room together for two hours? An intriguing pop literary analysis!
AND then there are the parallel minor seventh leaps, which I think are the most accessible to Asian ears … yes, absolutely, there’s a universality in aesthetics….”
He goes on eagerly, “Do you know Bernstein’s Norton Lectures? ... Oh, it is a challenge in Chinese because of the lack of the stressed and unstressed … but the eubonics of Mandarin….”
American-Taiwanese singer/songwriter Wang Leehom is really in his element now. After a slightly cautious start to our interview, he begins to open up, and we talk freely about a huge range of subjects about which he seems absolutely passionate: composer Leonard Bernstein’s famous lectures at Harvard in 1973, Chinese vs English linguistics, cultural dichotomies, his early hatred of German composer and music theorist Paul Hindemith.
It’s fascinating stuff, but as he hits his stride and the ideas start to flow thick and fast, I must admit to feeling just a little bit unsettled.
As a professional writer, I’m accustomed to long intellectual discussions – it’s almost as if that is what people expect from writers even if we would rather be talking about football or rom-coms.
But with Wang, it’s different. This guy is, after all, a bona fide pop star, one of the few pan-Asian pop icons around. Frankly, you don’t expect a major pop celebrity to toss Hindemith casually into the conversation (let’s face it, Hindemith isn’t exactly a household name!).
But then again, Wang is not your average celebrity.
Genesis of a conversation
For some time, I have been discussing possible subjects for an article for StarMag. As my entire existence seems in one way or another to be devoted to literature, I wanted to branch out and write about something or someone who was not directly related to books, but was in some way deeply involved in the creative process – a filmmaker, perhaps, or a playwright.
I was interested in people who are representative of contemporary Asian culture, whose work reflects the fascinating mix of cultures in a rapidly globalising world.
Although I had long been a fan of Wang’s music, it was his role as the idealistic young nationalist Kuang Yumin in Ang Lee’s 2007 masterpiece, Lust, Caution, that first made me sit up and think about Wang’s work as a whole – not merely as a singer, but as a creative performing artist.
In a world where artists are, like everyone else, falling victim to the pressures of spin and marketing, Wang’s ability to retain his artistic integrity fascinates me, as does his seemingly effortless capacity to translate his appeal across borders.
So on a recent visit to Taipei, I asked if I could speak to him about these and other things. He very kindly took a couple of hours out of his hectic schedule to chat with me. Here are some extracts from what turned out to be an entirely surprising and illuminating conversation.

It’s such a pleasure to meet you. There’s so much I want to ask you, and I’m not quite sure where to begin. All I know is that I don’t want to ask you questions like, “What’s your favourite colour?”
“Oh, really? (laughs – maybe nervously – and looks a bit worried?). I get asked that a lot!
I was thinking maybe we could just start by talking about your music. There are one or two of your songs that hold particular interest for me, but maybe you’d like to pick one first.
Hmm, okay. How about Kiss Goodbye (from Wang’s 2006 album, Heroes of the Earth)? There’s a symmetry in that song that comes from Leonard Bernstein, who’s one of my favourite composers. Are you familiar with his work?
Yes. I think he’s very under-rated nowadays. Many people tend to think of him as a light-classical composer, not up there with the greats, but in fact he’s a genius.
Absolutely. He’s a big influence on me. What he uses a lot, and what I used for Kiss Goodbye, were these parallel minor seventh leaps, which I think are very accessible to the Asian ear.
There are all kinds of subtle leaps – intervallic and tri tone leaps. I used small measures all the time in this song – in the very first phrase and then they continue throughout.
I find that interesting: the borrowing of Western classical composition techniques to construct a modern Chinese pop song.
Yes, but I prefer to see it as something universal. There’s a kind of universality of aesthetics, which Bernstein speaks about in his Norton Lectures. He was very concerned with language and the universality of sounds and gestures ...
... Meaning that certain sounds and words transcend cultural and temporal boundaries?
Absolutely. Some things are the same in any language, any culture. For example, the word for “Mother” is always a variant of “ma” – the sound, if you like, of a baby reaching for its mother’s breast. In terms of ideas, big is always better, small is negative.
It’s interesting that – musically, at least – you think in what seems to be a universal way. Do you think that this is partly an explanation for your success? I mean, you’ve just mentioned the universal concept of “Big is Better”, and certainly, there is a sense that your work is destined for a big audience. The scope and ambition is almost palpable.
Yes, I guess so. My early musical ambitions always involved big-scale music-making. I’ve always wanted to communicate with a large audience. I guess I’ve always believed that there’s something there in society, brewing, waiting to be tapped into. Music can be a very powerful tool – like writing.
Did you ever believe that things would turn out this way? I mean, that you were going to be a pop star?
(Laughs.) At some point I realised that I had to give in to my fate. I guess it was quite early. I thought: “This is what you’re going to be doing for the rest of your life”. And it felt natural.
I’m guessing that your musical education was pretty formal, very rigorous.
Yes, totally. I started conservatory very young – I grew up in Rochester, New York, where there’s one of the most famous music schools in the world, the Eastman School of Music.
Then at college I studied ethnomusicology and took a special interest in composers like (early 20th century classical music composers Bela) Bartok and (Claude) Debussy – people who changed the way we listen to music. By realising that ethnic music could define sound, they changed musical theory itself.

POP STOP

...
Who’s number one? The question has spawned the latest “war of words” in the Mando-pop world, as Little Pig claims to have bested Wang Lee-hom for the top spot in G-music’s sales charts for the final week of December. Both Little Pig, also known as Alan Luo, and Wang have just released new albums. When asked how he felt about beating Wang, Little Pig said “I can only make comparisons with myself,” reported the Liberty Times.
But Wang’s label, Sony, doubted the accuracy of the charts. A company representative offered a sore response, implying that Little Pig’s label, Gold Typhoon rigged the charts: “Everyone in record industry knows that whenever major artists from a certain well-known label come out with a new release, they come up with ways to make sure they are the top sellers.” Wang chimed in, saying that “there’s not enough credibility to the charts, they don’t really matter.”
Gold Typhoon, shot back with more numbers: number one in mobile phone ring tones and nine other sales charts and an average of 5,000 copies sold at autograph signing events. “We’ll continue to work hard — not make excuses,” said a company representative. Now, now, there’s enough room for both of you, said the Liberty Times report, which commented that the real praise should go to the two stars for their charity work.

Talk Asia Meets Wang Lee Hom
(CNN) -- He performed to a watching audience of millions at the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, but conducting the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra has been the most nerve-wracking thing the American-Chinese pop star Wang Leehom has undertaken for some time.
From the Olympics to holding the baton himself, Leehom has tackled a variety of projects.
"I think I always throw myself in these impossible situations and then see if I can scramble out of them and gain something from these experiences," he told CNN during rehearsals for the December performances.
"Standing in front of the orchestra was intimidating at times, but I think we got through it, and I think we made some exciting waves in town. We definitely got the crowd excited about it."
Leehom has certainly made waves with his Mandarin-language pop music, having sold around 50 million records, but as his recent foray in classical music confirms, he's more than just another voice with an interesting haircut.
Growing up in the U.S. to a family of doctors, he excelled at school but decided to take a different path to his parents.
After shunning the opportunity to study at an Ivy League university, he spent some time at Williams College of liberal arts before getting his big break in pop in Taiwan in 1995. At that time he admits he knew nothing about Chinese music and didn't speak Mandarin.
Show times
Wednesday, Jan 14: 14.00 GMT (22.00 Hong Kong)
Thursday, Jan 15: 04.00 GMT (12.00 Hong Kong)
Saturday, Jan 17: 15.30 GMT (23.30 Hong Kong)
Sunday, Jan 18: 01.30 GMT (09.30 Hong Kong)
Monday: 03.00 GMT (11.00 Hong Kong)
Learning Mandarin was just another challenge Leehom rose to meet and he believes that having Chinese as a second language has been to his advantage, and his interest in the linguistics of the language has led to some of his more innovative work.
"I always think for artists to take their shortcomings and turn them around and make them into what define them as an artist is a real trick," he told CNN.
"I think it's a wonderful thing for people to understand how language can be transformed and mutilated for musical reasons and actually bring out something special orally," he said.
Musically he's often been put in the same box as Mando-pop sensation Jay Chou, and has similarly has been the subject of rumor about ever aspect of his life, from his school grades to his sexuality.
Adding his face to a number of endorsements, the pressures of being in the public eye have made him become increasingly protective of his privacy.
"It's definitely changed me. It's like some defense mechanism I guess, to just be private, to keep things to myself, to protect myself or my loved ones. I am the same person, but just a different way of life," he said.
However it hasn't stopped him from branching out and taking on an acting career. He made his big screen debut in 2000 in the Hong Kong action flick "China Strike", but it was his role in Ang Lee's international success "Lust, Caution" that brought him wider international attention.
As for taking on new projects in the future, be they film, singing or even holding the baton once again, Leehom will stay true to his policy of challenging himself with different ventures.
"Sometimes it gives me a lot of trouble, sometimes it ends up launching a career which has been very good for me," he said.

Wang Lee-hom, Time Out Hong Kong By Ken Smith
I think the most inspiring thing about Leonard Bernstein is the way he crossed so many borders,” says Lee-hom Wang. That’s almost word-for-word what he said about working with Ang Lee in the DVD extras for Lust, Caution, but so what? At least Wang has earned the right. If the American-born Taiwanese singer-songwriter-arranger-producer and sometime actor knows anything,it’s about crossing borders.
It also explains why Wang takes a few days off this month from plugging his new pop album Music-Man (SonyBMG) to appear with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Though the Phil has a long history of working with pop singers, they’ve never featured someone like Wang, who at various points in the evening will be singing, playing violin, and even conducting the orchestra – atriple-play largely inspired by Bernstein, the legendary pianist, conductor, composer of symphonies and Broadway shows, and all-round media star who would’ve been 90 this year.
“Lots of composers then were breaking down boundaries,” says Wang, a graduate of Williams College, where he says the spirit of fellow Williams alumnus (and Bernstein collaborator) Stephen Sondheim was inescapable. “Bartok went out in villages collecting folk songs and it inspired his compositions. But Bernstein was the most accessible of them all. He knew how to communicate with audiences in everything he did.”
It was that same trait in Wang that led to the Philharmonic collaboration in the first place. “Lee-hom is a thoroughly convincing singer, and plays several instruments at a very high level,” says Timothy Calnin, the orchestra’s chief executive, who immediately approached Wang backstage after his Hong Kong concert two years ago.“He’s truly a complete musician, with respect for the symphonic tradition as well as the pop world. Right away I knew we’d found a popstar who could have a truly meaningful interaction with the orchestra.”
Soon, Bernstein became an apt theme. Like Bernstein, Wang possesses a restless musical curiosity. Like Bernstein, who brought Latin rhythms to Broadway and Jewish melodies to the concert hall, Wang has mined music from Chinese minorities and elements of Peking opera in his pop songs. And also like Bernstein, Wang is interested in promotingyoung classical composers his own age. Though the programme was still being determined at press time, Wang intends to sing a set of his own songs (arranged for the orchestra by Gerard Salonga), play Wieniawski’s Second Violin Concerto, and conduct a handful of short pieces, including Leonard Bernstein’s Candide overture Mambo from West Side Story and a piece by the 32-year-old Chinese composer Huang Ruo.
“The more I read about Bernstein’s life, the more fascinating it is,” says Wang. “You know, there was a time when Hollywood wasn’t just interested in getting him to write film scores – they wanted him to star in the movies, too. Everyone wanted a piece of him, and in my own way, I know what that’s like. When you have to make career decisions, it helps to know other people have gone through the same kind of things before.”

Of course, there’s a direct parallel between Bartok’s investigation of gypsy folk music and your own work. Could you talk a bit about this?
Absolutely! A number of years ago I travelled through Tibet and Mongolia recording the music and songs of ethnic minorities. It was a very rich experience. I wanted to incorporate those sounds into contemporary music to try and change the way we approach the contemporary form.
You used this to stunning effect, I think, in your 2005 album Heroes of the Earth. I remember being completely blown away the first time I heard Hua Tian Cuo (translated roughly – and unsatisfactorily – as Mistake in the Flower Field). To me, it seems to capture the spirit of East Asian pop culture today.
It was so musically innovative – the erhu (Chinese two-string violin) was totally unexpected, as was the vocal line making reference to Beijing opera. It’s really not what you’d expect in a Chinese pop song. It’s a breath of fresh air – even today. Did you set out to be consciously innovative with that album?
Very much so. It’s interesting that you picked up on the vocal line, because there’s a lot of melisma (the singing of a single syllable of text while moving between several different notes in succession, as heard in plainsong or the blues) in that song.
I wanted that melismatic line to refer to traditional Beijing opera and kunqu (traditional Chinese theatre) because language is something that’s really important to me. I like to explore the potential of the Chinese language, to see how it can offer a more satisfying experience than English.
With Hua Tian Cuo I asked to study with some of the greatest Beijing opera singers to study their technique, but these guys don’t teach in the formal Western sense. They just imitate their teachers at first, then develop their own style.
It’s very hard training, because it isn’t structured, and by the age of 50 their voices are gone! There’s a lot of pain involved, physical and emotional.
I’m interested to know how the music industry regards such innovation. I’m presuming that your name and reputation buy you quite a lot of leeway, but how do the marketing and PR people react when you go to them and say, “My next album is going to involve a load of traditional instruments”?
(Chuckles.) Yeah, that’s always tricky. I’ve just always had a resistance to marketing, to pigeon-holing. Human beings are eclectic, and music should be too.
I’ve always just wanted to be a pop guy who does what he wants, just like all the artists I admire – Prince, R. Kelly, Outkast, Missy Elliot. They’re people who make the music they want. They leave the marketing to others.
Okay, to be honest, I did feel the pressure when the market was healthy. But with the world’s economy as it is now, I feel very liberated. As long as I can get by, just making the kind of music I want to, I’ll be happy.
Look at R. Kelly. He’s always going to be around – maybe never as present as someone like Kanye West, but he’s always doing interesting stuff. Whether writing or producing or performing, he always just doing his own thing.
I guess there’s always going to be pressure on creative artists, not just from the marketing people but from within. It’s a balance between wanting to communicate with an audience, wanting to be heard or read and understood – and wanting to innovate. Creativity is essentially a personal thing, but we have to recognise that we live in modern times, driven by market forces. It’s hard.
I understand completely. I see myself as a writer too, whatever style I’m working with. When I write and compose, there’s a certain degree of ambiguity. My work is quite metaphoric, which is very common in Chinese culture, I think – but it’s also dangerous and exciting because it’s ambiguous.

Getting literary
Could you talk a little about innovation and language? Because there’s a really strong sense of the importance of language in all your work. You mentioned R. Kelly, who is playful with his lyrics, isn’t he?
Yes! He shows how you can mutate and mutilate words and language, but at the same time, everyone can understand what you’re saying. Think of Bump and Grind (1994), for example.
There used to be an obsession, in Chinese-speaking countries, with correct pronunciation – much less so now, which I find fascinating and exciting. It offers so many possibilities for rhymes and experimenting.
Chinese is evolving faster than we realise – every six months you’ll hear some new expression. Not slang, exactly, just a different way of saying things. In my new album, there’s a song called Ai de De Ti …
… Which, roughly, means The Primness or Correctness of Love? Or Love’s Chastity?
Yes, “de ti” meaning “prim and proper”. But “de ti”, also sounds like “dirty” in English, especially with your British accent! So there’s a play on words, with a more adult subtext. Everyone will know what it’s about. It changes and subverts the meaning of the lyrics. I think of it sometimes as the eubonics of Mandarin – I like the idea of an evolving language.
“Slang” often has negative connotations, but often these off-shoots of conventional language are essential to the vitality of the language itself. You can see this in Malaysia very clearly. Malay and English, and even Chinese have a very strong identity in their everyday spoken form. We identify through our own brand of spoken Malay or English. No one else in the world speaks these languages like we do.
It’s so fascinating. My bass player is British, a Cockney, and he was teaching me that slang … like, what do you call it?
You mean rhyming slang?
Yeah – it’s so weird! But also great. There are words for everything, like feet, what was it?
Plates of meat.
What?
Plates of meat: feet.
(Laughs.) That’s so funny.
You were talking about subversion. Well, rhyming slang is a very good example of how rude things can be said in polite company, and how certain words are used by people all the time when, really, they mean something very, very crude.
Oh really? (Sits up attentively.) Such as?
Berk. You sometimes hear people say, “He’s a berk”, meaning he’s stupid. It sounds inoffensive but it’s actually rhyming slang for something rude. And now it has passed into ordinary language without anyone noticing it.
So what does it rhyme with?
Um, maybe we shouldn’t go there….
Well, if you say so ... but I think you should tell me!
(A brief explanation follows. I can’t actually bring myself to say the word to one of Asia’s biggest pop stars, and it wouldn’t be published in a mainstream newspaper anyway, but it’s pretty clear what it is!)
That’s funny! I didn’t know that.
Okay, moving swiftly on! Still on the subject of language, and since you mentioned eubonics, can you talk a bit about writing rap in Chinese? How big a challenge is it for you?
A huge challenge. I can make it work, but I have to try very hard. I have to push and train myself the whole time. I mean, a Mandarin freestyle rapper is not going to have a big career!
In English, the ability to rhyme multi-syllabically is such a huge advantage. Authority-majority-sorority. The rhythm is there. In Mandarin you have to work your *** off to get the same effect! But what I’ve done is to make dense rhyming schemes in Chinese, which is something you can’t do in English.
Away from rap, do these linguistic aspects constrain or affect your songwriting? I’m just curious to know if someone like you, trained essentially in the Western tradition, senses any need for adjustment.
Yes and no. I don’t feel limited by them, but I do have to recognise certain differences. For example, the lack of consonant endings in Mandarin. Every word ends with a vowel – it starts with an attack and ends with openness. In English you have the reverse, clearly seen in exclamations – “What!” or “F…!” (Laughs.)
These sounds are very important in recording. They effect volume and frequencies. The sibilants are much more pronounced in Mandarin, and you pick these up when recording.

(this was a blog post by one of the musicians in HKPO... nobody seems to know his nickname)
Besides Jacky Cheung's Tai Yang Xing Chen and Leo Ku's You Gong Qing, I basically have not heard a lot of other contemporary music. Not because I'm "artistic"; I'm just not in their target market I suppose.
A few days ago the HKPO had our annual pop-classical collaborative concert -- HKPOxLIVE!. The singer this year is Wang Leehom. I first heard his music many years ago at his concert where he played the piano. I did not know who exactly he was. I only knew that he was musically trained, and that he was one of the earliest singer-songwriters [in Chinese music]. After having worked with him over the past few days, I see how he is different from other contemporary music artistes, and why he calls himself MUSIC-MAN.
We had our first rehearsal on Sunday. He sported thick glasses without any makeup. If he had not spoken, I would not have known that he was the star of the show. Rehearsals were long, and we had only an hour's break during our 5-hour rehearsal. Everyone must have thought that the star would be resting during the break as well. But I was returning for my own practice after a simple meal of McDonald's, when I saw Wang Leehom practising alone on the organ/violin. The last piece rehearsed for the afternoon was Bernstein’s Candide Overture, which Wang Leehom conducted. The session didn’t end happily. I'm just a junior member with the HKPO and am still in the process of learning. Though there is a lot I can't say, I thought the foreigners (the writer is referring to the Caucasian members in the orchestra) behaved really unprofessionally. The New York Philharmonic had a philanthropist conduct at their concert earlier this month as well, and the conductor wasn't even musically trained. Although there were also reports in the press of some unhappiness, at least there wasn't any show of disrespect towards the man on the podium during rehearsals.
We had 4 shows from Monday to Wednesday. Honestly, after hearing the same repertoire repeatedly, Heroes of Earth did get a little annoying. Wang Leehom was a very busy man. He had a CNN interview and telephone interviews. After the first show he proactively stood backstage to thank each and every one of the musicians, but I think no one really paid him much attention. This reminded me of something he said during rehearsals, when he thanked the orchestra for the opportunity, and even apologised to members who were unhappy. That was very brave of him.
I can't write all my music and sing, neither can I play the guitar, the violin, the piano and memorise a segment of Bach's Fugue for the organ. His talent lies not only in his ability to play multiple instruments, but more so in his stage presence and programme arrangements. Although he writes all his "simple" music (the writer is borrowing Jian Dan De Ge to describe Leehom's music) on his Apple using Logic Pro, his songs are definitely not simple. I can empathise when his fans scream and weep at his music.
In classical music, it sometimes takes several movements before you finally reach the climax. At the concert, Wang Leehom told the audience that besides having more "band" members and that "band" members need to be formally dressed, he didn't know what other differences lay between classical and contemporary music. All he wanted to do was to create good music in a different way. I've seen his CNN Talkasia interview, and learnt that he actually hoped to bring the music of the Chinese minorities to the masses through contemporary music. If we consider this carefully, is there really a difference between our classical music and contemporary music? Weren't Tan Dun's "Paper", "Water" or Stravinsky's Rite of Spring all gimmicks and creativity of their time that eventually got accepted by the masses? Art is subjective. It is really how we bring our story up on stage that determines whether a piece of art is "good" or "bad", "cheap" or "elite".
I would really like to say thank you to Wang Leehom, and on top of that, obtain his autograph for my Taiwanese wife. But he's a busy man. He got intercepted by the CNN crew, and when I returned later his room was already dark, so I supposed he was resting. Although he has thanked me backstage, I think I am just another one of the many people he meets in his life after all. But having seen his diligence and courage, I am motivated to work harder at my music! I guess I am only able to write worthless blog entries using an Apple! I hope I'll have another opportunity to speak with him again!

Leaving the Taiwan ‘buying chart’ saliva and retail sales figures war, Leehom Wang flew to Macau on the 9th, to the Venetian Hotel in preparation for his concert.
The day before yesterday, Leehom suddenly developed acute gastroenteritis and was unable to attend his record company’s ‘don’t buy chart’ press conference. But after a day’s rest, his physical condition seems to have improved, and he is following the original plan to go to Macau to perform. Yesterday afternoon, during rehearsals, Leehom wasn’t fully recovered yet, and could only rehearse a little bit, unable to sing one song after the other.

POP STOP
By Ho Yi
STAFF REPORTER
Friday, 2009 January 16, Page 14
Who is rigging the music charts and mocking those who play fair and square?
The story so far: Pop idol Alan Luo, also known as Little Pig, beats ABT heartthrob Wang Lee-hom and secures the top spot in G-music’s sales charts. Wang’s label, Sony BMG, strikes back and accuses Luo’s label, Gold Typhoon, of cheating on the sales figures. To maximize the news value of its barb, Sony held a press conference calling for an “honesty movement” to eradicate corrupt practices from the music chart industry.
What intrigues gossip journos more, however, is Wang’s conspicuous absence from the event that was held under his name. According to dirt dug up by Next magazine, Sony is far from the innocent bystander it claims to be. Facing the prospect of losing Wang’s contract should his album not triumph, the label’s alleged attempt at buying off record retailers failed, and the sore loser put on a show of bravado in a desperate move.
Wang’s no-show at the press conference was interpreted as a refusal to get involved in the “war of words.”
Those who did attend couldn’t be blamed if they felt used, especially Jay Chou. The Mando-pop king was the center of the attention at the confab. A couple of years ago he implied that Chen Tse-shan, the celebrated music impresario, had knowingly manipulated the charts for his clients who include Jolin Tsai.

LeeHom Wang cheers as his junior releases her album; Joanna Wang compliments that he is very handsome

At the press conference for new album "Joanna&Wang Ruo Lin", her senior LeeHom Wang specially came up onto the stage. Unexpectedly, Joanna who is usually very calm and quiet, couldn't look directly at her senior and also said that although it's not the first time she has seen LeeHom Wang, it's the first time they have stood so close to each other and her heart can't take it too well. Temporarily she couldn't really react but once offstage, she then complimented her senior as being, "Handsome!"
Her first album sold very well but Joanna confessed that she didn't like it very much. Before creating the second album, her father Wang Zhi Ping 王治平 who is the producer, asked, "You really don't wish to make the same music as the first album? This might put pressure on sales!" She said, "Even if there's pressure, I'd rather it be this way. I want to make my own music."

Leehom Wang jumps into lake three times to film MV and freezes

Away from the 'buying charts' storm, the night before last Leehom performed at the Venetian Macau Resort Hotel. Despite being a little sick, he still made his appearance and performed. He expressed to over 10,000 fans, "Even though I have a cold, I promise everyone that I will sing until I lose my voice." Using his strength as Music-Man to maintain his standards, fans warmly applauded him in return.
For his new album which has taken one-and-a-half years, Leehom has been busy travelling everywhere, risking temperatures of below 10°C to film his MV properly: getting drenched in the rain, jumping into lakes and all kinds of things. The new song "Everything" describes the story of good friends becoming lovers. In order to portray the melancholy love story, Leehom and the female lead acted out the tragedy of their boat capsizing, causing them to be separated forever. A large group of people went to Yilan to watch this and Leehom almost jumped into Plum Blossom Lake three times, only so that the scene turned out perfect.
During the plot interwined with tragedy and happiness, Leehom's voice became hoarse and exhausted in order to save the female lead but althought the scene seemed very beautiful, in the water he was so cold he couldn't stop shivering and when the couple were sitting in the boat expressing their love, he became very dizzy. Spending an entire day filming the MV, when they were back on land he rushed to asked workers to dry the female lead, giving her garlic soup, hoping that she wouldn't catch a cold, emerging as an absolute graceful gentleman.

Leehom switches stand on payola saga
Yahoo News
Taiwanese singer Lee-hom Wang was said to be down with gastritis when he was absent for the press conference to campaign against payola in the Taiwan music industry on Jan 8. He later clarified his stand over the payola saga in person, taking a neutral stand on the issue and also tactfully denied that he was absent because of gastritis.
Wang was earlier reported to have criticized that the album of fellow Taiwanese singer, Show Luo, only managed to top the music charts because his record company, Gold Typhoon Entertainment, had engaged in acts of payola, and also advised the public against the credibility of those charts.
Sony Music held a press conference last Thursday, to campaign against payola, in the name of Wang, with him absent from the event. Wang subsequently responded to the "payola saga" in person on Jan 13, expressing a total switch from the "criticisms" as was reported previously. "I have no wish in being part of these allegations and accusations. I wish to remain neutral in this issue," he said.
"I just want to be a musician; music is my forte. I'm not a businessman. Record companies should be in the most appropriate position to fight against this issue," he added.
Wang also denied to have called for the press conference which was held on Thursday. "I did not call for the event. I am not the lead in the press conference; and it is not possible for me to do these alone anyway. My record company has expressed hopes that I could attend, but I was unaware of that happening," he explained.
What was a reason seemingly became an excuse when Wang hesitated in response to the "gastritis" reason his record company gave for his absence. "Hmmm I did catch a cold recently," he told reporters.
Wang said he had not contacted Jay Chou prior to or after the press conference. Apparently, Chou was said to be at the press conference in support of Wang's call for the cause against payola. "If Jay was there to support me, I really got to thank him. We've always been supporting each other," he said.
With regards to this, spokesperson at Chou's company, JVR Music, said, "Our attendance at the press conference is not because we are showing support for anyone. We are supporting the cause of the event."
Wang added that having been in the industry for many years, he has always wished for it to be "healthy". "The Taiwan music industry is already weakening. Please do not further destroy it. This is also an environmental act," he expressed his plead.
With regards to record companies which may be resorting to payola as publicity means, Wang declined to comment but clarified that he was by no means criticizing Luo, and also added that the latter is a "hardworking artiste".

Breaking rules
Listening to your music, there’s a sense that you’ve come to grips with your voice over the years. I think you’re more assured on the higher notes now, and more relaxed on the lower. In 2007’s Xing Qi Liu De Shen Ye (rough translation: Saturday Midnight, from the album Change Me), for example, the really intimate style of recording allows us to hear the slight rough edges on certain notes, as if you deliberately left them in to give a sense of familiarity and loneliness.
Absolutely. I started training when I was a child, classically, and I’ve been doing it ever since. It’s fundamental. You’re right in that I think I know this voice very well now. I know what it can do and what it can’t, and I’m more comfortable with it than before.
The song you mentioned was something I just recorded late one night. I just went in the studio, composed, played and sang, just like that. On my own. I didn’t force my voice, I just sang.
In my latest single, however, my style is different. It’s punk rock, like almost screaming. It has divided opinion – some people love it, others really, really hate it. I want to break new territory with my voice – no one sings like that in Chinese, in an almost Kurt Cobain or Sid Vicious style.
(Later, I’m given a copy of the new single, “Yao Gun Zen Me Le?” – “What’s Up, Rock?” – and it’s a marked departure from his previous work. I won’t describe it here, but simply suggest you look up the brilliant video on YouTube at youtube.com/watch?v=bOhtGL_ayZ4.)
I’m fascinated to hear that you think your classical training enabled you to sing punk rock! And I agree entirely. With any creative art form, I believe that you have to know the rules before you can break them.
Exactly! I’m always seeing young guys in Asia who are all attitude and want to do their own thing – and that’s great too – but it often takes them a long time to find out that really suits them.

Lust-ful experience
Speaking of pushing boundaries, was the experience of working with Ang Lee on Lust, Caution something that stretched you?
That was just amazing. It made me more ambitious and more courageous. Definitely. It made me want to experiment and look for new things.
There’s one scene in particular, when a fight ends with you and your compatriots stabbing another character repeatedly, and then you follow the dying man down some stairs and break his neck with your bare hands.
It’s one of the most horrifying scenes in modern cinema because of the starkness of its emotions – the camera never flinches and there’s no music. Incredibly powerful. How on earth do you prepare for a scene like that?
(Sighs and looks down at the table.) You don’t. You can’t. You can’t prepare because it’s not acting any more. I don’t know how he does it, but Ang Lee makes everything seem real. I mean, I was crying for a long time afterwards – a long time. It was incredibly powerful, even for the actors.
I was really taken aback by this loss of control. It was something else that the film taught me – that there were so many things that I didn’t know. Ang Lee changes things. He’s an idealist, and he keeps pushing. That’s what I learnt from making that movie. I’m a lot less scared of failure now.
That’s very interesting to hear, because a lot of people would be tempted to say that you’re someone who’s always been in control, who’s never known failure.
But I have! I experience failure all the time! As a writer, you must know this. Failure is part of the job if you’re an artist. People just don’t see it, that’s all. It doesn’t mean that just because you’re a respected and well-known artist, life becomes easy.
You have to keep on working. That’s the most important lesson you can learn. I’m going to keep on auditioning for films – some I’ll get, others I won’t. It’s not going to stop me.
And it’s the same for my music. People like Ang Lee inspire me. Idealistic, rabble-rousing people, like Stevie Wonder – the sun is brighter when he’s playing in my headphones! It’s this optimism and energy that I hope I can project too.
Living famous
Do you think that talent competitions and reality TV shows are a good thing for young performers?
Well, on the one hand, they allow young people a way in, but the downside is that they make you believe that there is a right way and a wrong way to sing, and that is based solely on the opinions of the judges. They can destroy your confidence, and that’s not a good thing. And they also focus on the celebrity aspect rather than the music.
Recently, in Britain, there was a survey of children aged seven to 14, who were asked what they wanted to be when they grew up. A shocking percentage – I can’t remember how many exactly, but at least 50% - said “A Celebrity”. They didn’t say “actor” or “singer” or whatever, because that wasn’t important. The only important thing was to be famous.
(Laughs.) I shouldn’t laugh – that’s scary! And sad, too. If only they knew....
How bad is it, really? Is the celebrity thing just an annoyance, or does it profoundly affect your life?
(Shakes his head.) It’s terrible. I can’t tell you the number of times I wish I had that Harry Potter cloak, you know, the one you can just put over yourself and become invisible. It’s a nightmare.
I have to draw my blinds 24/7, and every time I go in and out of my building there are cameras and paparazzi waiting outside. And the rumours … they’re the worst. People just say stuff about you, as if they know you. They just make it all up.
Thanks very much for your time, Leehom. I look forward to your new album – oh, wait, one more question, please. The readers will want to know this.
Sure.
What’s your favourite colour?
(Giggles, looks confused – too simple a question for this young man, obviously!) Um.…
Only joking! Shall I just make it up?
Fine by me.
Okay, Wang’s favourite colour is blue. Actually, I have no idea. But I do know that he didn’t like Hindemith when he was a child. But then again, which child does like Hindemith?

Leehom Wang becomes ‘plumber’; takes on the post as environmental protection ambassador
January 23, 2009
Source : Sohu
Translated by Sarah @ http://asianfanatics.net (http://asianfanatics.net/)
Earlier, just in time for the Lunar New Year, “MUSIC-MAN’ Leehom Wang turned into ‘Plumber A-Hom’ and personally replaced his SonyBMG record company’s lightbulbs into energy-saving lightbulbs. He said: “I hope that through my influence, it can let every household in Taiwan change into energy-saving lightbulbs. Although it is more expensive, it can be used for a long time, and it can reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and it is more energy-efficient.”
Since he is the environmental protection ambassador for Taipei city, of course he needs to set an example. Starting from food, clothes and living, during the spring festival, Leehom will return to America to visit his 94-year old grandmother and other family members. He said that before he leaves, he will turn off the master switch at his house, so to save energy.
Leehom has always used energy-saving lightbulbs in his home, and they are all personally replaced by him. Earlier, he read a report on energy-saving lightbulbs and he discovered they have produced a new LED lightbulb overseas, and is currently the most energy-efficient lightbulb: “Although the price is quite expensive, apparently it can be used for 20 years, very energy-efficient. Unfortunately, Taiwan hasn’t been introduced to this yet.” He expressed that he will strive to be the endorser of energy-saving lightbulbs.
He also encourages everyone to use cycling as a means of transport. And he specially brought out his own bike to demonstrate. He said: “I usually ride my bike in the middle of the night, as exercise, or just to go out. Sometimes, I will ride my bike to the memorial hall to do some running, fewer people will recognize me in the middle of the night.” And when he goes cycling, he will always have a helmet on, even if it means flattening his hair. He says he is a public figure: “I need to set a good example.”
‘Plumber A-Hom’s self-discipline contract:
- use environmental-friendly chopsticks: owns environmental-friendly chopsticks, avoid using disposable chopsticks so to reduce tree-cutting, 1 year and a half to date
- donate second-hand clothing: regularly donates promotional clothing for charity
- carrying shopping bags: last album ‘change myself’ specially ordered custom-made shopping bag, carries with him whenever he goes out
- cycling as means of transport: did not spend a lot of money to buy a big bike, just a small bike, often goes cycling in the middle of the night as exercise and to get some fresh air
- outdoor running: memorial hall and freedom square are places he goes to run, doesn’t need to spend a lot of money to join fitness center, but still has a comfortable running environment
- try not to use air-conditioner: in summer, take cold bath, try to take off clothing and blow in natural wind, if use air-conditioner, control it to be below 28 degrees
- don’t watch TV: as strict self-discipline to not watch TV, simply pull out TV plug
- replace CD case: replace plastic CD case with recycled paper

Leehom Wang's Grandmother wraps a scarf around him

Numerous Leehom fans haven't been able to sing Leehom's new songs at Cashbox KTV. The recording company expressed that there were some differences in the songs they sent to Cashbox KTV at the time, and the songs that were recorded and filmed so they needed time to make a new plan; fans can now sing these songs at KTV. Holiday KTV on the other hand, didn't have this problem.
Leehom who performed at Las Vegas on Lunar New Year's Eve, also went to visit his grandmother in California; on the balcony, they chatted and did physical exercises together. Even though Leehom grew up overseas, due to the influence his family members had on him during that time, his Chinese is outstanding. His grandmother was even a university student; she is very educated, even helping Leehom interpret poetry and write lyrics with Chinese style.
Even though his grandmother lives overseas, she reads international news because she cares so much about Leehom. Each time she sees a news report about him, she will give him encouragement. The two of them talk about ancient and current, Chinese and foreign topics with no generation gap whatsoever. Many years ago, when Leehom went to Xinjiang [新疆] to collect folk songs, he bought a scarf for his grandmother to keep warm; so when the weather is a bit cold, she will place this scarf of love on her shoulders. Seeing Leehom with a cold but still putting all his energy into his concerts, she gets worried about her grandson and thoughtfully wraps a scarf around him; the strength of their grandmother-son relationship clearly seen.

Specially chosen by wife Joan, Leehom Wang leads in Jackie Chan's new film

In the film "Lust, Caution", Leehom Wang gave an outstanding performance and in the New Year, he will be travelling to Yunnan to participate in the new film "Da Bing Xiao Jiang" produced and written by Jackie Chan. From a very early stage, Jackie had chosen the main lead but recently, there have been rumours that he had originally chosen Jay Chou for lead, causing him to feel sad. He repeatedly asked his colleagues, "Why would they say that?"
Leehom has viewed Jackie Chan as his idol from a young age. He welcomes the challenge and even when choosing promotion photos, he will mention, "This photo looks full of dignity, it gives the impression of an army general." While shooting an advertisement in Hong Kong recently, Leehom has been working hard reciting his lines and practising his Chinese. In order to act the role of an army general, he has worked extra hard, so that he will make himself look more dignified.
Jackie Chan has been planning this script for 20 years. Originally, he planned on acting the role of the army general himself but due to restrictions on age, he could only choose someone he thought would suit the role best. His wife Joan Lin really admired Leehom so she recommended to Jackie that Leehom should play the role. Jackie Chan will instead play the role of a soldier and has invited Leehom to his house to chat and dine.
Having received strict training from Ang Lee, this time Leehom will make an even greater effort to fulfill his role. In order to achieve the required physique and accent, he has been diligently working out and hired a teacher to teach Chinese, so that he can assimilate into the role. He also requested colleagues not to arrange any other work after 9pm so that he has time to learn the script. Once, he stayed up until 5am to work on the editting on a MV, then even rushed to a morning Chinese class afterwards; his energy and perseverance is astonishing.

From his heart……and soul
2009-02-22
Wang LeeHom is no newbie in the world of showbiz.
Yet, with his newly-released 13th album “Heart Beat”, the singing veteran has proven that his versatility, popularity and talent as a singer stays fresh and everlasting. With the spotlight back on him along with his successful concert in Singapore late last year, Wong Casandra explains why his heartthrob and ambitious perfectionist never ceases to amaze.
Baring His Heart…… How many times would the heartthrob have heard the phrase “I Love You” from screaming fans during his countless live concerts? Being an extremely popular artiste, LeeHom is no stranger to being on the receiving end of endearing confessions from throngs of fans and strangers alike – however, to him, the phrase “I love you” has not lost its genuine meaning and is still one of the most intimate and passionate words to hear. To Wang LeeHom, these words are sacred, and also the most intimate and passionate words he holds close to his heart. Partially inspired by this train of thought, he decided to dedicate his latest album, “Heart Beat” to showcase his innermost, deepest emotions.
And Soul
The fiercely personal LeeHom had been contemplating about releasing this song for some time; it had been in his computer for several months but it was not until almost the end of the production of “Heart Beat” that he had finally decided to use it. For someone who did not express his inner feelings through his music, the single was a huge leap – and it was strange to think that such a powerful song started out from a nagging rhythm imprinted in this head during an exhausting period of daily rehearsals and performances. At first just a feeling melody, it was only after ending an extremely successful and tiring MusicMan concert in Taipei with a mixed bag of happiness and sorrow, LeeHom finally got down to serious work and give it lyrics…..and a name. Needless to say, it was a song that left a deep impression – but due to his heavy schedule, he did not have time to develop it as much as he would have liked.
Partially influenced by this hectic lifestyle, which unfortunately also did not allow him much time for friends and family, “Heart Beat” is a precise reflection of his innermost thoughts. As a result, LeeHom has dedicated every ounce of effort and every shred of emotion to the personal crafting of this song – from writing the lyrics, music composition, and even to playing every single instrument featured; from the guitar, bass, piano to drums.
Close to the Heart
Influenced by his international heritage, LeeHom’s music has always been an interesting reflection and presentation of his globalised upbringing, but without neglecting his Chinese roots, “Heart Beat” is a multi-faceted album showcasing a wide range of experimental style. Although LeeHom is usually classified as an R&B” singer, he has recently experimented and came up with a personal and distinctive style of music, quite popularly known as “chinked—out” music – an infusion of two very different musical influences – classical/tribal sounds from China, Tibet with modern, and typical pop candy chords.
As expected from the musical prodigy, Heart Beat is a melting pot of revolutionized music styles ranging from rock, rhythm and blues, ballads and many more. However, instead of applying knowledge that he had learnt back in music school, he was guided mainly by intuition and his willingness to bare his soul to the fans.
Fans will be treated to a mixture of very different song tracks - Heart Beat and Everything, both dramatic and soulful love songs that are confessions straight from his heart, The Sun After Washed by Spring Rain, a light hearted and easygoing folk song – his personal lament on stress and unhappiness brought about by modern day societal pressure and Dirty Love, an upbeat and bold rock-electronica track about the limitless human imagination and music in the future.
Mick Gazauki, renowned international sound mixer for the single
In addition to having invested his emotional all in his masterpiece, LeeHom saw to it add that perfectionist touch in the songs in every way. He invited internationals sound mixer Mick Guzauki, who has had many successful collaborations with internationally acclaimed performers like Mariah Carey, Brian McKnight, and Celine Dion to produce this piece. LeeHom sat down with Mike, and personally supervised the mixing process from head to toe. As a result, even Mike wasn’t spared from LeeHom’s fervor – because of the challenges faced and expectations set by LeeHom, he reported claimed that it was the most mixing that he has done for a song in his entire career!
Self-directing that MV for Heart Beat while working hand-in hand with Seamus, international Hollywood cameraman, and Uehara Takako, ex-member of hugely-popular Japanese girl band speed
By taking on the role of actor and director for his MV for Heart Beat, LeeHom had a single goal in mind – to deliver his innermost feelings to his fans. He was interested in getting an actress that suited the part, and after personally supervising a tedious and grueling audition process, he finally decided on Japanese popular singer, Uehera Takako (of Speed fame!). Despite being extremely busy with her career, Uehara took time off to fly down to Taiwan and participate in the filming of the MV after being impressed by the script and storyline for the video.
In spite of the language barrier and spurred on by his own eagerness to get his message through his fans, LeeHom took the extra effort to work alongside a hired translator and Uehara. Personally walking through the explanation of the whole shooting procedure with them, he took upon himself to make sure that the instructions were conveyed correctly. Furthermore – despite being a novice in directing – LeeHom also made sure that the lighting and angles were perfect in order to take the best angle for the MV. With the help of a good friend, and upcoming Hollywood cameraman, Seamus, he was able to achieve the perfect mood for the MV. In spite of the obstacles, the filming of the MV turned out successful – he had much praise for Uehara’s talent and professionalism during a particular crying scene – and they even ended up wrapping the filming procedure hours ahead of schedule!
Collaborating with Leslie Kee, master photographer
During the initial preparatory process for shooting the album’s cover, LeeHom and his staff discussed about new, fresh ways of shooting photos of LeeHom, and who was a suitable candidate for the task at hand. After some deliberation, they hired international photographer Leslie Kee, who specially flew down from Japan to work with LeeHom on the shooting. To get Leehom in the mood for the shot, Leslie made the effort to design an assortment of landscape backgrounds that fitted with the theme of the album - and as a result, he has managed to capture a truest side of LeeHom.
In “Heart Beat”, LeeHom expresses himself wholeheartedly with no bars detached - be it about lost love, work, dreams or expectations, LeeHom bares his soul for the very first time. Every song has a particular story related to LeeHom, and the title single, Heart Beat, here’s one particular song which touches. And specially for fans, as with the teaser and he has done for this album, LeeHom loses his top and bares his chest to create that statement of a no-holds-barred expression and a purest demonstration of what to expect from his latest music genius.
Now, can you feel your heart skip?

Wang Leehom's "Heart Beat" album celebrated around the world, releases special edition
Monday February 16, 2009 China
Wang Leehom's new album, "Heart Beat," was loved by fans around the world since its release. It toped many of the major mainland charts. Its newest hit "Another Heaven" also became one of the most popular duets and allowed "Heart Beat" win first place in this week's G-Music. This great prize made Wang Leehom, who's currently filming in Yunnan, happily expressed: "Im very happy that my music can be enjoyed by everyone. Although I'm busy filming right now, I've been missing all my music fans and hope I'll return to see everyone soon." To thank everyone's support and give them some thing new to increase their "heart beat," Leehom will show even more sides of the Music-Man.
The new edition's album cover was filmed over 10 hours, with 10 different outfits and poses. Leehom says that "the feeling of this album cover is different from the earlier ones. It has a completely different atmosphere to it. I want to use pictures to tell everyone that Rock n' Roll can be easy and relaxing." From Leehom's image as a perfect idol to today's music king, Leehom's style has became simpler and more heartfelt. The outfits were simple, without too much decorations, just like how Leehom's music are always filled with his own styles and not the fads of the day. It's because of that that Leehom's music can always attract people to reflect upon it.
"Another Heaven" is a duet between Wang Leehom and Jane Zhang and has been loved by fans on both sides of the strait since its release. Jane Zhang is currently a very popular artist from mainland. In 2007, Jane was invited by World Peace 1 to be the only Asian singer in the group song "Give your love." Singing with her were U2, Madonna, Mariah Carey, etc. Director Zhang Yimou also admired Jane Zhang's voice so much that he specifically requested her as the singer of the theme song of his "Impressions West Lake." Last year, Jane Zhang worked with one of the World's top 3 tenors, Andrea Borcelli, to sing a song for the Olympics. Leehom expressed, "I'm very thankful for everyone's support of this song. In this song, I used my producer's ability to perfectly showcase Jane's unique whistle register. I hope that with this song, more Taiwanese music fans will know this beautiful voice. I also hope that everyone can find their own "another heaven".
"Heart Beat" special edition includes Leehom's five self-directed MV's as well as a special edition of the Music-Man World Tour, including behind the scenes and rehearsal videos that'll show you a whole new Wang Leehom. It's especially editted by the concert's artist director who spent nearly a year to pick the best scenes from tens of rolls of film to let fans understand how and where Music-Man came from!

Leehom's made a new film while filming in China
Leehom started horseback riding lessons the first day on set and reportedly picked it up pretty quickly. His teachers praised him as a natural. (Why am I not surprised?) Anyways, the name of the horse is "Xiao Xi Er" (Little Four) and they've become fast friends. Leehom's constantly feeding him apples and bread and brushes him every day. Leehom also has to say good night to him before going back to the hotel for the night. He's already said that it makes him sad just thinking about saying good bye to Xiao Xi Er when filming is finished. Leehom is making 1 million USD for the filming of the movie.

Wang Leehom in Yunnan for filming of 'Young Soldiers'; Develops feelings with his partner by brushing its hair

After the Chinese New Year, Wang Leehom(王力宏) went to Yunnan for the filming of his new movie, 'Young Soldiers 白马王子'. It is rumoured that the movie costs US$1 million to film. In the movie, Wang Leehom rides a white horse, acting as a general. On the first day of filming, this 'Prince on a White Horse' was thought to ride a horse safely. He only spent a few hours before he learnt how to relax while harnessing a horse. He even fell in love with his 'good partner', which is his horse, 'Little Fourth 小四儿'. Everyday, he would personally feed him apples and bread, also brushing its hair and developing feelings with it. Everyday before wrapping up filming and returning to the hotel, Leehom would always bid Little Fourth goodbye before he left. It's no wonder that Leehom is worried that after the movie is finished, he would be seperated from the horse. Meanwhile, Leehom's album is selling well in Taiwan, hence on the 1st of March, he would take some time off to return there for an autograph session.

The following excerpts are taken from Jackie Chan’s website dated 21 February 2009 ( THINGS THAT HAPPENED BEFORE RESUMING WORK)
http://www.jackiechan.com/blog/514244--Thi...e-Resuming-Work (http://www.jackiechan.com/blog/514244--Things-That-Happened-Before-Resuming-Work)
After the lyrics took form, the three of us chief planners invited many significant figures to participate in the making of this song. World famous pianist Láng Lǎng played the piano piece; renowned musician Peter Kam who’d previously produced notable songs such as We Are Ready and Nánshuō Zàijiàn (Hard to Say Goodbye) composed it; famed “singer of the red flag” and the representative of China’s New Generation Melody Vocals Liú Yuànyuàn is one of the main singers; talented musician Leehom Wang and well known music producer Yu Binghan took on the responsibility as the producers of the song. All of these people are significant and influential figures in the music industry and they’ve all come together because of this song, Guójiā (Country).
Under their careful supervision and great efforts, Guójiā (Country) has been filled with strong implications that illustrate contrast and comparisons. For example, the gathering of a vast range of musicians expresses the great strength of our country, the truthful lyrics express the happiness in a family; the extremes in the two comparisons reflect the deep feelings between country and family, a nation and its people. I feel very touched at how the eight main producers have placed great importance towards the song. They’ve infused the love and affection they have for their mother nation and combined it within their music. They think that the sound of music is a resonance of love, and being able to produce a gift for the country’s 60th anniversary is an honor for any Asian.
I remember the time before we started recording the song when I was filming in Yuanmou. I listened to this song Guójiā (Country) with Leehom Wang who was filming with me at the time. He is someone who has studied music seriously. I’ve worked with him for quite a while now and the more I work with him, the more I admire him. There are a lot of amazingly talented people in the music world but I think that he is the most naturally gifted person out of all those amazing people. Why? Not only is he tall, well-built, and handsome, but he knows how to play the piano, erhu, drums, and violin (he pretty much knows how to play any instrument with strings on it). Furthermore, he knows how to speak fluent English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and even his Japanese isn’t bad at all. He can read over 90% of the Chinese characters and he sings really well. I really admire his talent so I invited him to participate in the making of Guójiā.I think I might ask him to sing another version of Guójiā (Country) because I think that the way he’ll perform it will definitely be different. He will give everyone a fresh and different feel.
****************************************************
After the dinner reception, I began to carry out a rather complicated mission. What kind of mission? Well, this all started when I was back in Yuanmou talking with Leehom Wang. While we were talking, I asked if he’d ever been to Japan and he said that he studied there before. So then I asked if he’d ever eaten a Japanese cold crab and he said no. I told him that the Japanese cold crab was delicious and there was one time when I visited Japan for seven days, I spent six of those days eating the crab. It was absolutely delicious. I then told Leehom that I would bring some back for him to try and he immediately thanked me.
This time while I was talking with Leehom, he actually told me that it might be quite difficult to import the crabs but I said that it should be okay. When I make a promise to do something, I always keep my word. So before I went to Japan, I called to order the crabs. And because the economy isn’t doing very well, the owner of the restaurant didn’t have very many crabs in stock but when he found out that I wanted to order them, he was willing to put them aside and reserve them for me.
In the evening, I went to eat crabs with an old friend, Cai Lan. I guess I can call her my half-teacher. She really knows how to eat. In the restaurant, she personally went to the kitchen and cooked me a few dishes to eat. I really enjoyed the food and ate with great pleasure. After dinner, I got some ice, placed my pre-ordered cold crabs into a box and then put the ice inside the box as well to keep the cold crabs fresh. I had to take the crabs away with me because I was scheduled to leave Japan at 7 o’clock the next morning and the restaurant isn’t open at that time. The restaurant owner actually told me that he couldn’t guarantee that cold crabs won’t go off if they were shipped over long distances and wouldn’t let me take the crabs away. The restaurant felt responsible for the quality of the food that they served. I told them not to worry and insisted that I would take full responsibility. As long as they gave me more ice then it would be fine. I took the cold crabs back to the hotel and placed it in the coldest area of the bathroom with the air conditioner on.
The following day, I went to Japan airport and as soon as I arrived, I immediately made a call to Shanghai and asked the staff who were going to meet me to prepare some ice so that when I arrived in Shanghai, I could refill the box with fresh ice. I hoped that by doing this, I could try to keep the cold crabs fresh and hoped that they wouldn’t go bad. While I was at Shanghai airport, the sniffer dogs picked up on my box of cold crabs. The customs officers then asked me to open the box and put it through the X-ray machine. At that particular moment, my heart just silently screamed within. The only thing I could do was to move the box and prepare to put it through the X-ray machine. But luckily when the customs officers saw me, they knew that I wouldn’t do anything illegal and I also explained that the box only contained some seafood for me to consume. So then they cleared me through customs.
After going through customs, I immediately made another call to the staff at Kunming airport and asked them to prepare some ice for me. I thought that replacing the ice throughout the journey should enable me to safely accomplish my mission without a problem. But little did I expect that because of heavy fog, the aircraft couldn’t land or take off at the airport and the plane that we were supposed to board couldn’t land. Instead, it was diverted to Nanchang. After the fog lifted, we had to wait for our plane to fly back from Nanchang to Shanghai before we could board it and fly to Kunming. By the time it arrived at Shanghai, it was already past 7 o’clock in the evening. Luckily, I recognized the local director of Civil Aviation and he knew that another flight had seats available so he arranged for me to travel on that flight to Kunming.
I arrived at Kunming and it was already past 11:00 p.m. I didn’t care about anything else and the first thing I did was open the box that was carrying the crabs. The ice inside had already melted so I immediately refilled it with large amounts of ice. My initial intention was to rush back to the set as soon as possible and have a cold crab meal with everyone. However, by the time I got back it was already 3:30 a.m. and everybody was already sleeping so the best I could do was to put the cold crabs in the refrigerator for us to eat later.
When I started work in the morning, I made arrangements with the managers of each department and the director to meet up after work and eat cold crabs together. To sum it all up, I just made a casual comment and I ended up bringing back some cold crabs for Leehom. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed eating the delicious cold crabs but they didn’t know the full story behind the crabs and how much effort I put into getting them here. Seeing how happy everyone was while eating the crabs made me very happy as well. And seeing how the JC stunt team and the new seven little fortunes had to share one crab among several members, I felt that everything I did was well worth it.

Wang Leehom rides the High Speed Rail - Carrying bags, goes all out to rush to work
Source: Liberty Times
(http://libertytimes.com.tw/2009/new/mar/3/today-show1.htm)translated by MoonlightD @ http://asianfanatics.net (http://asianfanatics.net/)
Wang Leehom once again exhibits the spirit of Iron Man to race against time. He seized the chance to leave Taiqian and hurried straight from Taichung to Lin Kou Ah Rong’s filming studio to film his 7th straight MV "Script". Reporters hurried to the filming location. Even having removed his hat, Wang Leehom was still as handsome as before. No baldness crisis could be seen. He shot during the night until early yesterday morning around 2 o'clock before stopping. However, at 6 o'clock in the early morning he had to head towards the airport again to catch a flight. He had to sacrifice sleep again for work.
Pushed back hairline for show, Hair is extra lush
In order to act the part of an important general of the Qin Dynasty, Wang Leehom had to shave off his hairline. The day before yesterday, he insisted on wearing his hat. This generated speculation about his baldness. However, yesterday, we saw his thick hair with our own eyes. He easily covered up the part that was shaved off.
Leehom Wang asked the "Young Soldiers" crew for time off to return to Taiwan. The day before yesterday, he successively went to Taibei and Taichung's 2 autograph sessions. Pressed for time, he had to take the High Speed Rail. The autograph session in Taichung ended at around 8:30, he happily carried "souvenirs" from fans and prepared to head North. He carried bags, asked for from department stores, filled with cards, newspaper clippings, handcrafts, cakes, pastries, etc... given by fans to catch the High Speed Rail. While he waited on the platform for the High Speed Rail, many fans were unexpectedly able to see their idol appear and were all pleasantly surprised.
Wang Leehom rode to the Taoyuan station, got off, and headed to Lin Kou Ah Rong’s filming studio. During his time aboard, he only ate 2 pieces of pizza to fill up. Being busy at work and rushing for time, he must bring out his highest efficiency level.
Leehom tells a story, Iron Man atmosphere
Hindered by limited time, Wang Leehom will not act this time. He will only be in change of the dialogue in the MV. The one who plays the part says that the person in the story sits in front of an old-fashioned movie machine watching the movie being shown. The staff thought that this would be very simple, that they could finish work at 11PM the night before. They didn't expect him to strive for perfection. He attached great importance in the effect of the lighting and believed that it must have a better mood. He requested for a reshoot many times for the lighting to be redone while viewing the shots at the scene. This request for perfection extended the time for the shoot by 3 hours. They shot until early in the morning at 2 before finishing. Smiling, Wang Leehom said, "In the future everyone can call me MM!" because he has passed from MUSIC-MAN to MOVIE-MAN. Whether it's coming out with an album or shooting a movie, he must become Iron Man.

WANG LEEHOM
Taiwanese-American Wang Leehom’s latest album is this week’s pick, outshining easily a Norah Jones wannabe and a dated, if starry, compilation. FONG LEONG MING has the reviews.

Heart Beat (Sony BMG)
TALENTED Taiwanese-American singer and songwriter Wang Leehom has always stayed on top on my list of male artistes of note.
Ever-dependable, he consistently churns out top-notch albums which stays on the charts for all the right reasons. Has it been 14 years already since he first hit the charts with Love Rival Beethoven?
True, in the beginning, his rappin’ and black American mannerisms might have been a bit off-putting but his talent for writing ballads has always shone and there has been no looking back since.
Heart Beat, his 13th, looks set to follow in the footsteps of his other highly successful albums, including Revolution (1998), The One and Only (2002) and Unbelievable (2004).
There is a good mix of ballads here (hurray!) but his energy is mostly reserved for the catchy fast tracks.
From the fast, catchy title track Dirty Love and the head-banging Puppet to the rap-inflected No Reason To Pay Attention To You, Leehom is doing what he loves best — making music and having fun at the same time.
With all that energy and talent, you can just imagine how infectious those songs are.
But his ballads are undoubtedly the icing on the cake. Leehom has a romantic streak, and it shows. Female fans may be enamoured with his good looks but when he croons his ballads, you can be sure they are falling like tenpins, swooning like anything.
Another Heaven, a duet with Jane Zhang, is easily the best, though Screenplay, Heart Beat, Everything and the clumsily-titled The Sun After Washed by Spring Rain will easily put you in a romantic mood.
All in all, Heart Beat is another milestone in Leehom’s career. With the fusion of rock, pop, jazz and sometimes traditional Chinese sounds that we’ve come to associate with his music, his music is, as always, trend-setting.
RATING: HHHH
SONY FAIR @ TAIWAN
(Sony BMG)
WITH its starry line-up, I suppose this is a case of better late than never. Featuring 12 artistes from the Sony label, this concert, clinically titled Sony Fair@Taiwan, was held at the Taipei Arena in April 2006.
Big names headlining this music event include Wang Leehom, Coco Lee, Rainie Yang, Vic Chou and Harlem Yu.
With around two hours of live performance, this is a a good DVD to watch if only to see how much your favourite stars have progressed or improved in the past almost three years.
Surprisingly, not much. Many of them look as they do today, and their songs still sound fresh and contemporary. I suppose some hits do stand the test of time.
The hip and cool Leehom’s two-song gig stands out above the rest, with cutie-pie Rainie also impressing with her singing. Well, I’m pretty positive she isn’t lip-synching!
On the whole, revisiting this all-star music event is not too much a waste of time, if only to catch your favourite singers in action.

Leehom in Jackie’s new film “Junior Soldiers”
2009-03-26
http://wangleehom.com/happenings/view?id=1183
Jackie Chan is reuniting with his "disciples" and Taiwan pop singer Wang Lee-hom in his latest film, "Junior Soldiers (Dabing Xiaojiang)."
Seven winners of "Chan's Disciples," a TV reality show aimed at unearthing kung fu stars, have supporting roles.
Junior Soldiers, Wang's follow-up to his debut in Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution (Se, Jie)," is set in the Qin Dynasty (BC 221-206). Wang plays a young general who befriends Chan's soldier in wartime.
Chan started writing the script 20 years ago. At that time he planned to play Wang's role himself but two decades later, has bowed to age and gone for a younger candidate. Rumor says that his wife Joan Lin chose Wang because she is a fan of his, something Chan has not yet commented.
Chan is producing the project with mainland director Ding Sheng behind the camera. The film is being shot in Yunnan province.

Wang LeeHom: No Plans To Get Married

Wang LeeHom went to Malaysia a few days ago to promote his upcoming concert in Malaysia, set to take place next month; while he was there, he said frankly that he was a little envious of Jackie Chan for having both a happy family and a successful career. LeeHom also said that he would really like a wife like 林鳳嬌 Joan Lin FengJiao (Jackie's wife, formerly a popular Taiwanese actress) and a son as clever as Jaycee. However, when the local media asked him when he'd like to get married, LeeHom was quick to stress that, at the moment, his work comes first. His family has also not pressured him [to get married].
LeeHom laughed and added, "Having a child? That's something that can be 'accomplished' in just a few minutes! However, it's not in my current plans; moreover, I've already 'adopted' 10 children from Laos." When asked whether or not there is currently a girl who can make his "heart beat," LeeHom said, "Not recently; no. My only ma zi (slang for girlfriend, involves the Chinese character for "horse") is the horse I ride in the movie 大兵小將 [Da Bing Xiao Jiang] [Foot Soldier, Little General]!"

Jackie Chan, in 20 years, simmers from a "small general" to a "big soldier"
Source: 163.com
translation by MoonlightD @ http://www.asianfanatics.net (http://www.asianfanatics.net/)
During this year's May Day holiday, Jackie Chan and his friends are preparing to hold a 2009 Beijing large scale concert in the Bird's Nest. Jackie Chan will also become the first person to hold a concert in the Bird's Nest after the Olympics. Yesterday, he worked nonstop again taking his newest film, "Big Soldier, Small General"'s director, Ding Cheng, lead actor, Wang Leehom, Liu Chengjun, Lin Peng, New Seven Little Fortunes*, etc to appear together in front of the media. Since the start of filming, they were under orders that the film was to be "protected from fire, from robbery, and from amusement". From start to finish, they half-concealed their face like holding a pipa*. It wasn't until yesterday that they finally uncovered the mysterious veil. The film still has three more days before shooting completes. This is also the first time that "Big Soldier, Small General" has held a press conference.
Wang Leehom receives recognition from Chan's Wife
Snatches role away from Jaycee Chan
Yesterday, at the scene, not withholding information, Jackie Chan said straight out said that the "small general" role in "Big Soldier, Small General" was not originally meant for Wang Leehom, "At the very beginning, I wanted to have Jaycee Chan to act in the role. However, I surveyed many audience members; As soon as they see my son and I appear together, they will not care for the content. Instead, they will laugh like "hahaha" and say, these two people really resemble each other! Afterwards, I considered Daniel Wu. He is an actor that I brought up with my own hands; he is like my other son. However, then I thought about the two films, "New Police Story" and "Shinjku Incident" both stared Daniel Wu and I. If we continue to collaborate, won't everyone become weary of it? At this time, I had no other choice, but to find a small blackboard and write down some names of those who suited this role. Afterwards, Joan Lin*** said to me, pick Wang Leehom; when standing together with Jaycee Chan and Daniel Wu, they are all tall and lean.
Even though this "Music King" was placed as the third in line for this position by the big brother, Wang Leehom did not take offense at all. He even excitedly expressed, "When I was growing up in the US, there were very few Chinese celebrities I had contact with. Big brother could be said to have been my childhood companion as I was growing up. As long as I can act in his film, it doesn't matter what I have to pay, it will still be worth it." Then, Jackie Chan told the reporters that soon after, during the filming, he constantly sighed with contentment about the wisdom and farsighted vision of his wife, "Actually, I met Wang Leehom 10 years ago. At that time, Alan Tam was throwing a party. Wang Leehom not only performed on the Erhu, the violin, and the piano, he was also proficient in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English. At that time, I thought, what can this youngster not do! Later, during the filming of "Big Soldier, Small General", every morning Wang Leehom would practice his skills alone and then write his own music. Sometimes he even helped me compile songs on the computer. He can do everything, but he still continues to study and learn.
Story originates from Jackie Chan's thoughts 20 years ago
Spreads the word of peace with the help of the movie subject
"Big Soldier, Small General" is about a story that take place in ancient times. Even though the two roles, big soldier and small general, has already brought the audience into a war scene, this story actually doesn't relate to war all that much. In this film, war is merely a backdrop that has been devoid of content. The real point still occurs in the story between the big soldier, the small general, and other characters. The film's actual subject is the proclamation of peace. Jackie Chan says that the story of "Big Soldier, Small General" comes from a sudden inspirational thought he had twenty years ago. In these several years, he has told many people this story. They all expressed the desire to write this story, but no one carried it out. However, not long after Ding Cheng, who had worked with Jackie Chan on four commercials before, heard the story, he delivered a completed script to the big brother. The two clicked together at once and decided to collaborate and accomplish "Big Soldier, Small General" together. Originally, Jackie Chan wanted to save the role of the "small general," in the plot of the film, for himself. However, in a period of twenty years the big brother cannot help but turn in the "big soldier", setting aside the "small general" for the young Wang Leehom.
In regards to Ding Cheng, who has just executed the film "Underdog Knight", Jackie Chan had nothing but praise, "I pay much attention to directors who I collaborate with. Some people don't even understand what they have directed. However, ever since collaborating with Ding Cheng for the first time on a commercial a few years ago, his talent left behind a deep impression on me. We shot four commercials and this film, "Big Soldier, Small General," together. In the near future, our second film will be coming out.
Jackie Chan brings out his secret weapon
Picks out female lead from the Olympics opening ceremony
Since "Big Soldier, Small General" began shooting, there has been no information about the selected female lead. Some even affirmed that the film was an all male show. At the press conference yesterday, Jackie Chan officially announced the female lead who has never shown her face before, Lin Peng. Perhaps the name Lin Peng might sounds quite unfamiliar to the audience. However, if I mention the young lady teacher who guided the children to leave behind a profusion of colors on the canvas at the Olympics opening ceremony, I'm sure that no one will be unfamiliar with her. This female teacher was acted out by Lin Peng. It was precisely during the dress rehearsal of this program that Jackie Chan "glanced" at this quiet and sweet girl.
In addition to this, big brother also brought another "secret weapon" -- the actor from Korea, Yoo Seung-Jun. The youngster, Yoo Seung-Jun, who was named the "Dancing King", suddenly became an American citizen in order to evade military duty in 2002. At yesterday's press conference, Jackie Chan was not able to evade this sensitive subject completely. However, he stated, "Everyone makes mistakes. As long as he regrets it, acknowledges his mistake, we should forgive the temporary impulsiveness of youngsters. Previously, I have seen many people bring various trouble to a collaboration. However Yoo Seung-Jun did not. Along the way, he has become more and more outstanding." Yoo Seung-Jun, for the sake of participating in "Bog Soldier, Small General", practiced his Chinese lines day and night as well, "Big brother is the pride of all Asia. I will cherish his appreciation."
Translator's Notes:
* The Seven Little Fortunes (traditional Chinese: 七小福; pinyin: qī xiǎo fú), sometimes known as The Lucky Seven, were a performance troupe consisting of the China Drama Academy's most capable students. Aged as young as 7 or 8 years old, they travelled and showed their acrobatic and acting skills to domestic and western audiences in theatres and venues such as Laiyuen Amusement Park. The school also sent these students to work for movie studios as extras.
Though there were more than seven pupils in the troupe at any one time (some estimates say 14), only seven would appear in each performance. Jackie Chan was one of the Seven Little Fortunes and when asked about his most famous pupil, Master Yu Jim Yuen said that Jackie was "not one of the best, but the naughtiest, yes."
Known members include Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Corey Yuen, Yuen Wah, Yuen Tak and Yuen Mo.[Wikipedia]

Wang Leehom admits to being paranoid; refuses to make friends online
Source: The Liberty Times
Translated by ♥Kitsiee @ http://asianfanatics.net (http://asianfanatics.net/)
The World Wide Web holds many traps, even Lee Hom admits that he is paranoid and would tend to doubt the people he meets there, and thus uses the Internet very carefully. The only reason he joined one of the famous online networking sites, was because his friend was one of the founders of it. But because too many people use his name online to make friends, the amount of people wanting to befriend him there were over 300,000 people! His friend said, "If that's the case, you might as well join!"
Once bitten, twice shy. Lee Hom makes his friends carefully.
Talking about himself joining 'Facebook', he looks entirely passive, and laughingly said, "I won't use this as a pipeline to make friends. 300,000 people, don't you think that's a little hard to pick your friends?" Continuing to explain, he said, "I'm used to face-to-face interaction. I'm a little paranoid, and even with the naked eye, I'll have doubts when meeting new friends. What do you think will happen when it's only through videos?"
Lee Hom admits, even idols are people, they also wish to make new friends. But he also said, "After all, I've been 'bitten by a snake' before (referring to a bad experience), so I'll be more careful." Lee Hom said in 1 year, he has almost 300 days of working away from home, and social tools like the internet and webcams are essential to him to keep in contact. "But I have never webcam with a stranger, for fear of hackers, or people with bad intentions."
Yesterday, Lee Hom endorsed a product, and became the online moderator for one of the sites. He encouraged everyone, especially those of the working class to join the world wide web, and shared with everyone the daily happenings in their colorful day to day life. He also posed as the guest conductor of a five member brass Orchestra, composed of those from the working class.

Lee Hom dazzles fans
Source: The Star Online Malaysia (http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2009/5/4/nation/3825208&sec=nation)
Monday May 4, 2009
KUALA LUMPUR: American-born singer-songwriter Wang Lee Hom brought the house down with a top-notch performance at his “Music Man Live in Malaysia” concert at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on Saturday night.
Over 25,000 fans packed the stadium, singing along to his Mandapop hits.
Fans at the concert – aptly named “Music Man” – were treated to a diversity of musical genres such as pop, R&B, rock, jazz and even traditional Chinese music.
Wang, who sang a total of 28 songs, wowed the crowds with his musical talent as he showcased his skills on the piano, guitar, violin and drums.
The highlight of the concert came when Wang “morphed” into his alter ego “Music Man” by brandishing his prized possession – the custom-made G-Clef dragon-shaped electric guitar.
The crowd went wild as he released his inner rock star with fast, electrifying numbers such as What’s Rock with Rock, Heroes of Earth, and Dirty Love.
The 33-year-old music star then had fans singing along to his other signature tunes such as Wei Yi (The One and Only), Ai Ni Deng Yu Ai Zi Ji (Loving You Means Loving Me), Kiss Goodbye and others.
Wang also took the opportunity to show off some of his dance routines, which had the crowds screaming for more at the end of the three-hour concert.
The concert was organised by Galaxy and supported by Tourism Malaysia.

Hail the Music Man
By OH ING YEEN
Source: The Star Online Malaysia (http://star-ecentral.com/news/story.asp?file=/2009/5/5/music/3830067&sec=music)
Wang Lee Hom rocked the crowd at Bukit Jalil last weekend as he flaunted his vocal and musical skills.
MERE adjectives can’t seem to justify Wang Lee Hom’s mind-blowing performance at the Music Man Live in Malaysia concert at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium last Saturday.
The American-born Taiwan-based artiste was in top form and lived up to his reputation as Music Man as he flaunted his vocals and musical skills on the piano, guitar, violin and drums.
The crowd went into a frenzy when Wang descended from the top with his Chinese-ink painting guitar and kick-started the concert with fast numbers What’s Rock with Rock and W-H-Y, which set the tone for the evening.
The dashing singer then morphed into Music Man and wielded his prized possession – the Bahamut, the custom made G-Clef Dragon-shaped electric guitar.
“I have a friend who came all the way from Ireland, let us hear him roar,” he said when introducing his Bahamut.
It was truly a feast for the senses, with the computer-generated visuals shown on the LED screens on stage, showing an animation of Wang as the superhero Music Man who defeated demons with his trusty weapon, the Bahamut.
Coming from a classical music background, Wang showed a different side when he delivered fast songs such as Gai Shi Ying Xong (Heroes of Earth) and Dirty Love with ease.
Aside from Music Man, Wang should also add another feather to his cap – Magic Man – with his magic tricks that left the audience amazed. Firstly, he re-enacted the music video of Change Me, in which he played four different characters (drummer, vocalist, guitarist, bassist) simultaneously, which was made possible in the MV with multimedia effects. However, to put the act live on stage was a feat as he first appeared as the drummer, Xiao Li, and started playing the drums. Then the vocalist Wang Lee Hom walked on stage and started singing. Close-ups shown on the screen showed that all four were Wang, leaving the audience wondering how he split into four characters at the same time .
The second trick was when he disappeared from the stage after getting into a contraption and suddenly popped out from the middle of the stadium!
He displayed his mastery of the musical instruments when he performed violin solo on When You Wish Upon a Star.
“It was a simple yet meaningful song that inspired me,” he said, reminiscing about his collaboration with the KL symphony some years ago.
It was a touching performance as he played the violin for Luo Ye Gui Gen (Falling Leaf Returns to Roots), accompanied by images from Lust, Caution, the Ang Lee-directed movie which Wang acted in.
There were a few costume changes, such as the studded vest that showed off his well-toned bod, as Wang let his music do most of the talking instead.
“I like making music, I think I’m like a music gypsy and I may be different from the idol that people think I am, but today I want to show you the real world of Lee Hom,” he said, before singing Can You Feel My World and No Reason To Pay Attention To You.
Wang sure knew how to work the crowd as he interacted with them and asked them to sing along. But it was apparent that the local and foreign fans from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Singapore, Australia and Japan, who knew the lyrics to the songs by heart, needed no cajoling. He endeared himself to his fans as he greeted them in their native languages.
He also showed off some dance moves which had the crowd screaming for more.
At the end of the show, after much demand from the crowd screaming “Encore!”, Wang finally reappeared on stage playing the piano.
“I’d like to give kisses to everyone but because of the AH1N1 flu pandemic, I’ll just dedicate Kiss Goodbye to all of you,” he quipped, before bidding farewell. The night ended with Wang playing the piano and singing What’s Wrong With Rock.
All in all, it was a memorable performance. The opening acts were by Malaysian Idol season 2 winner Danell Lee and Project Superstar 2008 winner Kay.
Music Man Live in Malaysia concert was organised by Galaxy and support by Tourism Malaysia.

First look at Jackie Chan's 'Little Big Soldier'
May 15, 2009
International poster art and several production pics from Jackie Chan period action comedy LITTLE BIG SOLDIER (aka JUNIOR SOLDIERS) have begun circulating on the web. The poster, with its depiction of Chan in earthy period garb casually crouched with an arrow sticking out of his chest and a yellow bird on his head, suggests the movie might be a welcome comedic take on the big-budget, period war films that have been filling up Asian screens with the likes of RED CLIFF and THE WARLORDS.
A foot soldier and a general from rival states became the sole survivors of a war. As they're pursued by the general's brother who would kill anyone for the throne, the soldier also struggled if he should betray the general for the ticket home.
Written and produced by Chan, LITTLE BIG SOLDIER is directed by Ding Sheng and stars Jackie Chan, Yoo Seung-jun, Wang Lee-hom, Peng Lin, and Mei Xiao-dong.
The film is expected to be released in Asia this October.

Wang Leehom drives a second hand car, not worried about being unable to get girls

Wang Leehom passes his 33rd birthday today and celebrated it in advance last night at a campus concert. He never bought cars in the past but this time round, under his younger brother's suggestion, he spent NT60,000 on a 10-year old second hand car as a birthday present for himself. Initially, he thought that this was more environmental friendly but it turned out that getting a new car was more environmental friendly.
Wang Leehom held a campus concert yesterday and while the ticket sales was not too ideal, the fans were very passionate and even sent their birthday greetings during the concert.
Unless other male artistes who have a passion for expensive cars, Wang Leehom doesn't mind driving second hand cars and views environmental friendliness as the main consideration. He said, "The economy is not doing well now so people prefer to sign on less demanding contracts. But they still need to buy cars so getting a second hand one let you achieve both wants."
Doesn't Wang Leehom worry about not being able to get girls since he doesn't drive new cars? He said confidently, "I don't. If the girl is going to date me, she should be able to accept my style."

Celebrating his birthday with fans whose birthdays are also of the same month, birthday-boy Leehom was super "high".
Iron man Leehom Wang was just as busy on the day before his birthday. On May 16, he held a concert at a school in Tai Chung and celebrated his birthday with about a thousand fans. He received a mountain of presents, and on top, his record company hosted a birthday party for him and his band members from Singapore at "1981 Bar". The party did not end until 3 to 4am in the morning.
The day before his birthday, he also received two nominations from Golden Melody Awards. Leehom Wang teased, "I used the least amount of time to arrange the song <no reason to pay attention to you>. I didn't expect it to get nominated. This is a great birthday present!" He also hopes that this year, he can help bring Chinese music and movies to the international stage.
Leehom Wang received many presents, which included a laptop bag and a Georg Jensen accessory. His good friend Stephanie Sun, who has been busy with her concert, wished Leehom a happy birthday through the phone. After Stephanie Sun's concert ended, she left Taiwan yesterday and will be taking a vacation. At the after party, she revealed that because the zipper of one of her dresses was stuck, she ended up cutting it, which made her felt a bit regretful.

Wang Lee Hom sponsors 10 children in Africa; Is now the "Daddy" of 20 kids
Source: HunanTV (article) & UDN (pictures)
Translation by minivicki @ http://asianfanatics.net/
According to Taiwan media report, Wang Leehom followed a Taiwan's charity organisation and visited Sierra Leone. Yesterday (June 2nd), he ended his 10 days trip and returned to Taiwan. It is said that this time round, he has sponsored another 10 children in Sierra Leone and that makes LeeHom the "daddy" of 20 kids in total now.
When at the airport, LeeHom appeared to be quite tired. He spent a total of 52 hours traveling back, first taking a car from the town followed by a boat ride to the airport before flying to London and passing Bangkok for a transfer back to Taiwan. Due to this visit, LeeHom also rejected 3 performances and missed out on NT 5 million of income. However, he said that "The experience is something money can't buy."
Hanging the mosquito net when sleeping
LeeHom had a very tough 10 days as he had to live in a condition where there's no water and electricity. Even when dining, there is no proper utensils. He had to follow the others and eat with his hands. There's a lot of mosquitos there and the problem of dengue is quite severe. Although LeeHom already went for a vaccine and ate medicine, those would only have a 80% protection rate. Thus he also had to hung the mosquito net before sleeping to prevent mosquito bites.
Last year, LeeHom visited Laos and sponsored 10 children already. This time, returning from Sierra Leone, he has sponsored another 10 more children and is thus now the "daddy" of 20 children of various nationality. LeeHom brought along his younger brother on this trip so that his younger brother could get involve in charity work and have a special, unforgettable experience.

Wang Leehom brings hope back from Sierra Leone
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- When a disaster strikes, the "30 Hour Famine" program always responds swiftly and brings urgently needed food and supplies to children and families faced with a crisis. Established by Christian relief organization World Vision, the program—aimed at raising funds and awareness of world hunger issues among the public through a voluntary hunger strike—will celebrates its 20th anniversary in Taiwan this August.
For this occasion, World Vision Taiwan recently invited acclaimed singer Wang Leehom — one of the most inspiring Asian Americans of all time according to the Goldsea Asian American Daily, and a longtime ambassador for the charity — to visit the Republic of Sierra Leone in West Africa and witness the improvement Taiwan's help had brought to people's livelihoods there.
So far this has been the farthest country from Taiwan he has ever been to. Wang went to a very remote district named Kono, where the movie "Blood Diamond" was shot.
Although his first impression of the country was based squarely on the movie — Sierra Leone is the lowest ranked country on the Human Development Index and the seventh lowest on the Human Poverty Index in the world, the pop star recalled that his view of the country has been totally changed after meeting the Sierra Leoneans.
It took him three days and two nights to reach the field, where he witnessed first hand signs of poverty just by looking at the people's homes, which are all made of mud and have no water or electricity.
"The people have been through very unusual experiences. Yet before I left, I saw hope," he told The China Post two days after returning from his trek to the tiny African nation.
Though Sierra Leone is still in a delicate situation, he pointed out that seven years after the civil war ended, people living in the program areas of World Vision show no hatred.
"The country became extremely underdeveloped because of war, but for those who survived the war, they are looking ahead in solidarity, regardless of the terrible things the rebels have done," Wang noted.
World Vision's work in Sierra Leone began in 1996 bringing immediate relief to those affected by civil war, especially children and amputees. In 2007, the relief organization launched Area Development Programs (ADPs) in Gorama and Gbane, supported by child sponsors in Taiwan.
"I've observed many World Vision programs, such as food-for-work, school feeding, child sponsorship, and 30 Hour Famine supported activities," he went on. "I was very proud to see thousands of children being sponsored by Taiwanese donors. People from a place so far away called Taiwan care for them!"

continuation:
Wang Leehom brings hope back from Sierra Leone
Even though most people cannot imagine how far and broad the impacts that a little contribution can make, he remarked how child sponsorship gives hope amid poverty.
"I appreciate World Vision's work very much. I'm addicted to child sponsorship," said the popular singer and actor who decided to sponsor ten children in Sierra Leone as a result of his trip, in addition to the ten kids he already sponsors in Laos, officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic.
"I remember meeting Kai Lebbie (36), an ex-combatant who was captured by rebels. He lost his left leg from stepping on a landmine during the war. A father of 5 children, he returned to his totally ruined village to rebuild his life.
"He is an amazing man. With only one leg, he can fix almost everything, including motorbikes and army tanks. He has a dream to open his own motor vehicle repair shop. With the assistance of microcredit, I hope his dream will come true," said Wang.
Throughout his journey in Kono District, the young Taiwanese-American also came face to face with the impacts of the global food crisis on poor communities.
"The rainy season is hungry season. People eat only plantains and cassavas for half a year," he said as he explained that farmers who grow crops during the rainy season must rely on food stocks from the previous harvest.
In these difficult times, children are often the first victims of social inequality as some parents are unable to afford to send them to school.
"On the roadsides we saw people digging for diamonds. They weren't big mines, so the chances of finding a real diamond are quite low. I saw a child dig out one tiny diamond the size of half a rice grain, which he could sell for maybe US$2," he recounted.
These children will continue in their struggles with hunger and lack of education without assistance, pointed out Wang, who described himself as a "tool" though which the public can better understand the needs of those countries.
"Wherever World Vision needs me, I will go there," he said, adding that he will join in the upcoming "30 Hour Famine Hero Rally" organized for August 15-16 at the Multipurpose Gymnasium in National Taiwan Sport University in Taipei City to share his experience with the public.
For 20 years, World Vision Taiwan has held the landmark event that will feature non-stop songs and activities.
The activity will also be a rare opportunity to empathize and learn about the many challenges faced by disadvantaged countries around the world, said Wang.
