Winning the first place on the Mando-pop bill board in the first month of this year, Wang Lee-hom's new album Unparalleled Hero has already sold 1 million copies across Asia. The key to his success? Apart from his pretty face, Wang creatively combines Chinese traditional music with hip hop beats to create a new fusion style called "chinked-out" music.

As one of Pop Stop's showbiz informers pointed out, "chink" was and is a racial slur referring to Chinese people. By turning the negative connotation upside-down, Wang said the term would be given a new meaning in relation to a musical style that is international and Chinese at the same time.

Judging from the success of Wang's new sound, the word "chink" will soon become a moniker of cool like "taike" has.

Taiwanese singers urged not to be pawns of Beijing

By Shih Hsiu-chuan
STAFF REPORTER
Saturday, Jan 21, 2006,Page 3

A Democratic Progressive Party legislator yesterday made an appeal to local entertainers to boycott Chinese government-sponsored performances, which he said were part of Beijing's scheme to promote a song brainwashing its dissidents.

"When the Chinese government persecutes those who do not conform to its ideas such as Falun Gong practitioners, it always plays the the song called `The Same Song'," said Legislator Lee Chen-nan.

The "Same Song," a well-known pop song in China, is the theme song and name of a popular musical variety TV show that first aired on the state-run China Central TV (CCTV) in 2000. It is also the name of a musical show that CCTV will stage in several North American cities around the time of the Lunar New Year this year.

Several Falun Gong adherents who were sent into forced labor camps in China have claimed that they were forced to repeatedly listen to and sing "The Same Song" as part of their indoctrination by Chinese officials.

Lee said that singers who participate in Beijing-sponsored musical shows might become the Chinese government's accomplices in the future, as their performances might be broadcast in the jails where its political opponents are held.

CCTV has begun to hold vocal performances in some North American cities to advertise the musical show, including one in Toronto on Jan. 15 and another in New York on Jan. 23.

"We have learned that some famous singers in Taiwan, such as Chang Hui-mei, Wang Lee-hom and Chi Chin, among others, are going to attend the show in New York, and we urge them to cancel their plans," Lee said at a press conference held to address the issue.

Falun Gong practitioners view the song as an odious symbol of hatred and persecution, as it reminds them of the cruel oppression they have experienced, said Chang Ching-hsi, the leader of Falun Gong's Taiwan branch.

Will Leehom Strip?

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/6127/concert3yv3oe.jpg
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/9527/en15003copy7pl.jpg

This year concerts have been hot in Taiwan. Dancing King Rain held his concerts and musician David Tao just finished his run at Taiwan’s new stadium Xiao Ju Dan. Golden voiced songwriter Wang Leehom will take the Xiao Ju Dan in March.

Leehom who just recently came back from a performance in New York, attended two press conference right off the plane. One of them was for his upcoming concert.

The press was curious how Leehom planned his concert. Was Leehom, who plays around ten instruments, going to show off his musical and vocal talents and have a “David Tao” oriented concert? Or was Leehom going to try to have a more “showy” and “entertainment” oriented concert like that of Bi’s?

Remembering Bi’s concert, which was held just a month ago, the big question was, “Leehom will you strip?” Leehom laughed and replied, “You’ll just have to wait and see.” Leehom said he would show the appropriate amount of skin, however he did not reveal if he would go shirtless. He joked, “I would have to visit the gym a lot more before I can pull of a “Bi”.”

His new concert has many new themes. Including Qing Qu +Kun Qu and many Chinese elements that will coincide with his Gai Shi Ying Xiong and Xing Zhong De Re Yue’s albums. There will also be Kung Fu elements; fans have not seen Leehom in Kung fu action ever since his 2001 movies of China Strike Force and Avenging Fist. In addition there will be a guest performer, however it has not been revealed who this guest is. Many speculate that it is Korean singer J Lim.

Valentine's dream and the reality

By Joey Chung
CONTRIBUTING REPORTER
Tuesday, February 14, 2006, Page 16

Tsai Chung-yu, 22, is looking for the perfect Valentine's gift for his girlfriend. As he parks his motorcycle, a beautiful model posing in lingerie winks at him from a nearby billboard. As he steps into a mall, Vivian Shu coyly greets him, advertising the latest beauty products -- perfect for the ladies on the special day. On the second floor, a stunning blonde in a low cut tank top and fitting jeans asks him to take a look at a new fragrance for women.

By this time he has been bombarded with so many images that he's forgotten why he's here in the first place. Ah, yes. Valentine's Day. Too bad his girlfriend doesn't look or act anything like the models. Tsai's predicament is easily understood by many of youths across the country.

As Taiwan's first generation brought up under the brainwashing images of TV, movies and fashion magazines, it is not surprising that by the time they reach their 20s, it has indirectly affected their views on the opposite sex.

The perfect body, the ideal look, the right boyfriend or girlfriend. The so-called "Strawberry generation" has a preconception as to what a partner should be like long before it is ready to judge for itself. For many of these young Taiwanese, the gap between advertised ideal and real life couldn't be more obvious than on Valentine's Day.

"Japanese culture has heavily influenced my views toward girls," Tsai says. "Ever since being exposed to Japanese trends at middle school, I've always thought that the perfect girlfriend should look more Japanese. Cute clothing, big watery eyes, long silk-like hair and a small but very developed figure were the characteristics of the perfect girlfriend."

How has this influenced him in every day life?

"When I'm out looking for gifts or clothes to buy, I often tend to lean towards Japanese trends. And for many guys, Japanese porn has played a big part as well. Years before encountering the situation in real life, porn has already taught us what beautiful women should look like and [how they should] behave. After years of all this, there's already a fixed mold of what a young, attractive and successful female should look like.

"If you don't look like a cute Japanese school girl, then you should look like Lin Chi-ling. If you don't, it's like you failed to live up to expectations. It's harsh, but that's simply what's been handed to us from a young age."

Girls are not the only victims, as this phenomenon works both ways. "Ideally, my Valentine's Day date would be Wang Lee-horn or Demos Chiang," says Claire Yao, 24, from Taoyuan, whose ideal Valentine's date would be a ride on a Ferris wheel.

Due to the recent explosion of teen TV dramas and the exposure of young and wealthy businessmen, the image that has been pushed forth by the media of an ideal male is clear: He should come from a wealthy family, drive a Mercedes and own three companies before turning 35. There is mounting pressure for men to meet social expectations of what it means to be young, successful and wanted.

Doesn't all this affect one's idea of the perfect date?

"Of course. Whenever I watch TV and there's a character that is around my boyfriend's age but is already a famous musician or a big shot CEO, I joke to him why isn't he like that. But, for us [girls] it's just harmless joking as opposed to being brainwashed.

"Whenever a new model explodes into pop culture, guys will exclaim excitingly, `I'm in love! That's the kind of girl I want!' Girls are less superficial. We know perfectly well that ideals are different from real life and we stress other characteristics. For girls, I think the media have taught us that though being good looking is important, the perfect date should be funny, well dressed, and most importantly, a gentleman."

At the end, for the sake of Valentine's Day, could there be a happy ending, something between dreams and realties? Do the pristine gods and goddesses prancing around on TV, in magazines, and on billboards cause more unhappiness and frustration? No, both Yao and Tsai agree. They grew up accustomed to force-fed imagery and aesthetic values, and though there's no denying the influences, by now they're well equipped to separate the two. They're just eye candy, best left to the imagination. At the end of the day it's still our real dates that we end up spending Valentine's Day with.

Other showbiz visitors to Little S' bedside were sister Big S, Makiyo, Elly and Kevin Tsai (who dropped off a present that he had bought on a recent Paris trip). Also at what was dubbed the Valentine's "counting gold" party by a Chinese-language daily was Wang Lee-hom. The singer has repeatedly denied gossip that he is having a fling with A-mei and insisted to any hack that would suspend disbelief long enough that he spent the night with his grandma. Valentine's Day is not just for lovers, he was reported as saying, it's also for friends and family.

Innocence is everything in the world of Mando-pop it would appear, so no need to spare a sigh for A-mei, who appeared on Zhang Fei's Valentine's Day show and fended off questions about her love life by suggesting she had not had a boyfriend for five years. Clearly Wang and A-mei are a match made in Mando-heaven.

Wang Lee-hom debuts his East-West mix

By Joey Chung
CONTRIBUTING REPORTER
Friday, March 10, 2006, Page 14

It's going to be an exciting, sweat-soaked weekend at the Taipei Arena as one of Taiwan's most famous musical artists, Wang Lee-hom takes to the stage.

Wang, who just a few months ago released his album Heroes of Earth, is scheduled to hold concerts on Saturday and Sunday. Afterward, Wang will perform in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Heroes of Earth is one of the first albums to successfully blend traditional Chinese music with pop music or hip hop. Wang has borrowed heavily from Beijing opera to create a new form of music that has wowed his fans.

Wang has also asked his friends in the music industry to collaborate in creating this "new sound." As such, South Korea's current "it boy" Rain has dedicated his first Chinese song to Wang. Taiwan's May Day and even the original Beijing opera singer behind Farewell my Concubine Yan Li are also contributing.

Why the emphasis on traditional Chinese culture this time? And furthermore, why the concentration on Beijing opera as the main inspiration?

Wang Lee-hom will be breaking new ground this weekend with a hip hop meets Peking Opera show.

Wang, who grew up in the US, feels that through the eyes of most Westerners, the most symbolic emblems of Eastern culture are calligraphy, Chinese herbal medicine and Beijing opera. Therefore, what better way to express the magical musical powers of the East than Beijing Opera?

By including Chinese opera instruments such as the erhu fiddle, Chinese gongs, wooden clappers and performing with a rap rhythm and tempo, Wang hopes to show the world the sophistication of Chinese culture and add a new light-hearted perspective so that traditional opera music can be expressed and admired.

Yet for those who are already familiar with Wang and his songs, why go to the concert at all? What surprises can we expect from him on stage?

"There will be a total of 10 people making guest appearances, including England's Westlife, and Taiwan's Mayday," said Scott Hong of Sony BMG.

"During the performance, including the different dancers, opera singers and martial arts performers, there will be as many as 100 people on stage. Wang has been furiously practicing wushu.

"Wang's band members were invited to contribute in the pre-production side of things and add to the evolution of the process, so that Saturday's concert may well be a very different affair from the one on Sunday."

The final touch for fans? "One of the songs was composed with the direct help of fans, and [Wang] is very much looking forward to the experience of singing the song hand-in-hand with his fans. For his fans and especially himself, it should be a very intimate and unforgettable experience," Sony's Hong said.

Wang Lee-hom Debuts East-West Mix

2006-03-12 09:52:51 kfccinema.com

It's going to be an exciting, sweat-soaked weekend at the Taipei Arena as one of Taiwan's most famous musical artists, Wang Lee-hom takes to the stage.

Wang, who just a few months ago released his album Heroes of Earth, is scheduled to hold concerts on Saturday and Sunday. Afterward, Wang will perform in Hong Kong and Shanghai. ??

Heroes of Earth is one of the first albums to successfully blend traditional Chinese music with pop music and hip hop. Wang has borrowed heavily from Beijing opera to create a new form of music that has wowed his fans. ??

Wang has also asked his friends in the music industry to collaborate in creating this new sound. As such, South Korea's current it boy Rain has dedicated his first Chinese song to Wang. Taiwan's May Day and even the original Beijing opera singer behind Farewell my Concubine Yan Li are also contributing. ??

Why the emphasis on traditional Chinese culture this time? And furthermore, why the concentration on Beijing opera as the main inspiration? Wang, who grew up in the U.S., feels that through the eyes of most Westerners, the most symbolic emblems of Eastern culture are calligraphy, Chinese herbal medicine and Beijing opera. Therefore, what better way to express the magical musical powers of the East than Beijing Opera? ??

By including Chinese opera instruments such as the erhu fiddle, Chinese gongs, wooden clappers and performing with a rap rhythm and tempo, Wang hopes to show the world the sophistication of Chinese culture and add a new light-hearted perspective so that traditional opera music can be expressed and admired. ??

Yet for those who are already familiar with Wang and his songs, why go to the concert at all? What surprises can we expect from him on stage? ??

There will be a total of 10 people making guest appearances, including England's Westlife, and Taiwan's Mayday, said Scott Hong of Sony BMG. During the performance, including the different dancers, opera singers and martial arts performers, there will be as many as 100 people on stage. Wang has been furiously practicing wushu. Wang's band members were invited to contribute in the pre-production side of things and add to the evolution of the process, so that Saturday's concert may well be a very different affair from the one on Sunday. ??

The final touch for fans? One of the songs was composed with the direct help of fans, and [Wang] is very much looking forward to the experience of singing the song hand-in-hand with his fans. For his fans and especially himself, it should be a very intimate and unforgettable experience, Sony's Hong said.

Leehom Wang just doesn't stop to amaze with his unique style of east-meets-west pop songs. The star who landed a huge success with the CD Shangri-la offers more of his enchanting sounds on his red-hot new album Heroes of the World. His new half hip-hop/half Peking opera tunes are sure to melt the hearts of all true music lovers!

Around a year ago singer/actor, Lee Hom Wang mesmerised the music world with his very own blend of Asian and western sounds. Now he invites everybody to a second serving of his unique-style melodies on Heroes of Earth.

Lights, costumes and lots of action

Wednesday March 15, 2006

By LI EE KEE

Taipei recorded rather nippy weather conditions last Sunday evening. But for those seated inside Taipei Arena, the air was far from chilly. It was the second and final night of the 2006 Sony Ericsson Wang Leehom Heroes of Earth Concert.

About 13,000 fans of all ages had gathered to watch their idol. It had been three years since Leehom staged a concert in Taipei. Little wonder that the air was sizzling with excitement.

It wasn¡¦t just fans who turned up. Celebrity pals including David Tao and F.I.R also attended the concert. Also spotted on the first night were Karen Mok, Selina and Ella of S.H.E, Xiao S and her husband.

The three-hour concert started as scheduled. At 7.35pm, the lights were turned off but the arena was still aglow with red, green, yellow and blue glowsticks. A lone spotlight focused on the corner of the red drapes, which was emblazoned with the words Dai Shi Ying Xiong (Warriors of Earth), the concert¡¦s theme.

A dancer with a painted monkey-faced mask emerged, possibly portraying the Monkey God Sun Wukong. He approached the gong in the centre of the stage, and positioned himself to strike it.

Once the gong sounded, the lights behind the curtain was illuminated, revealing six human silhouettes in various kung fu poses. They began replicating some kung fu stances. Next, a dancer appeared from the side of the stage. Flying towards the centre of the stage with a sword in hand, he slashed the curtain in two, revealing Leehom, garbed in a traditional emperor-like outfit, suspended several feet in the air, holding a red flag. Four dancers who stood behind him, then made their descent. Leehom followed suit.

All this was enough to drive the fans into a frenzy and he hadn¡¦t even started singing yet!

For the next few minutes, the stage was a blur of activity which included dancing and acrobatics. It was an elaborate and grandiose opening.

Finally, it all came to a halt, with only Leehom¡¦s laboured breathing punctuating the silence.

¡§Dai shi ying xiong dao la (Warriors of Earth is here),¡¨ he announced. And the euphoric crowd started screaming hysterically.

Three years is a long wait to see Taiwan¡¦s prodigious son in concert. Not wasting any more time, Leehom opened with a three-song medley ¡V Dai Shi Ying Xiong, Fang Kai Ni De Xin (Open Your Heart) and Ai Ni Deng Yu Ai Zi Ji (Love You = Love Me).

¡§It feels good to be home. For the past decade I¡¦ve been living in Taiwan, doing music and hoping to enter your lives. My dream has come true,¡¨ said the US-born Leehom.

After a frenetic start, he slowed the pace with ballads Gong Zhuan Shi Zhuan (Revolution), Ai De Jiu Shi Ni (You Are My Love), Kiss Goodbye and Yong Yuan De Di Yi Tian (Forever First Day). In total the 29-year-old performed 32 songs.

The two-night concert was more than just a promotional event for his latest album, Dai Shi Ying Xiong. It was also a celebration of his 10th anniversary in the music industry and as a way of thanking his Taipei fans for their unwavering support.

That night, he took every opportunity to reassure them of his love and their special place in his heart. He blew them kisses and dedicated songs to them. He told them that he used to ask himself why he did this and seeing them tonight, the answer was obvious. He spoke briefly about his love life, noting that he would not lose hope in finding love and asked them for their encouragement.

And just for them, he had been training hard at the gym. He proudly flaunted the fruits of his labour during the concert, showing off a well-toned torso. Several reports in Taiwanese newspapers claimed Leehom was in the best shape ever.

No expense was spared in the concert production. The semi-circle stage was nothing short of grand. Of course, the huge suspended bridge caused quite a buzz when it made its entrance. Two large monitors hung at the sides while another 11 vertical-shaped panels were located at the back of the stage, providing the colourful graphics. Then there were the pyrotechnics and costumes for Leehom and his army of dancers.

Malaysian fans who did not get the chance to catch the concert need not fret as Leehom announced that it would be coming out on DVD. And if it¡¦s any consolation, much of the line-up was similar to that of the Lee Hom Live in Concert World Tour at Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, last year ¡V especially segments in which he showed off his musical talents from playing the keyboard (while it was being hoisted by two dancers) to pounding on a drum and in the erhu section on Zai Na Yao Yuan De Di Fang (Faraway Place).

That night, Leehom delivered a polished performance, executing his dancing, bantering and musicianship with perfunctory precision. His hard work over the past few months paid off. For Leehom and his fans, it was perhaps the perfect 10th anniversary celebration anyone could have asked for.

Leehom¡¦s Heroes of Earth promo tour, which is presented by Celcom with Galaxy as organiser, will kick off in Malaysia this Friday. What¡¦s more, Celcom and Leehom have announced that there is a surprise in store for his fans!

A BT pop idol Wang Lee-hom took the central stage at the Taipei Arena last weekend to spread his new fusion style of East and West, labeled as "chinked-out" music. To make sure the concerts were culturally blended, Wang sang a long list of covers from bands that included England's Westlife and Taiwan's Mayday.

It had been two and half years since Wang's last concert here, and the new mixed style was not the only accomplishment Wang has been working on. To his gay and female fans' delight, the maturing star has broken through the cocoon of a gentle polite young man, and changed into a sweating wild stud who gave an excellent view of his muscles and dirty danced with girls on the stage.

Judging from the rapturous reactions from the crowd, Wang has chosen the right path.

Mga late-April daw ang staging ng MTV Asia Awards 2006, kasi yung viewer's choice, mag-tatakbo ito hanggang Abril 11. So there is still plenty of time to vote for our favorite music stars.

As for Taiwan, don't forget our overwhealming favorite, the one and only LEE HOM !!!

Sony BMG brought together all its local big-name singers for a big-budget concert at Taipei Arena last Saturday. Coco Lee and Wang Lee-hom, allegedly one-time lovers, put the good old times behind them as they fought for the limelight.

After reportedly turning down an offer from Wang to perform at the closing show, the has-been Mando-pop big shot spent NT$200,000 on a lavish hip-hop outfit to show the audience who was the queen of the night.

Relax, it's just mando-pop. Or is it? Wang Leehom and A-Mei's latest records sing of "Chineseness" in ways that aren't music to everyone's ears.

In 2005, pop star Wang Leehom raised some eyebrows among Asian-Americans when he surrounded the release of his tenth album Shangri-la with the phrase “chinked-out music,” inverting a derogatory word to describe his musical fusion of East and West. “If you like to listen to Eastern-sounding music, then go ahead. But what I’m trying to do and accomplish on this album is to create a new vibe called 'chinked-out,' which is a new school of hip-hop.” He continues: “The 'chinked-out' sound incorporates lots of elements of Chinese culture and it actually creates a stronger identity for Chinese music so I would disagree with anybody who would challenge me to think that they would rather listen to karaoke songs because it’s more 'Chinese.'”

In 2006, pop star Chang Hui-mei (a.k.a. A-Mei) drew some controversy over the song “Chinese Girl” from her latest album I Want Happiness? The Taiwanese balladeer first sparked criticism when she performed the Taiwanese national anthem at Chen Shui-bian’s 2000 presidential inauguration, leading mainland critics to label her a separationist, which in turn led to cancellations of a 2004 Hangzhou concert and caused Sprite to temporarily drop her as their mainland spokesperson. Now, Taiwanese critics are taking issue with the “mainland-pleasing” lyrics of “Chinese Girl.”: “You’re nobody’s empress / You’re a self-respecting Chinese girl.”

Both stars can be called “marginal Chinese” (Wang is a New York-born Chinese-American; A-Mei is a member of the Taiwanese aboriginal Puyuma tribe) who have become royalty in the Mandarin-speaking mainstream with their chart-topping pop albums. For Wang, American roots have lent him street-cred among Taiwanese pop fans, especially female teens aching for sexy bad-boys. For A-Mei, an aboriginal ethnicity has given her the unique image of someone simultaneously exotic and local. Both rose to superstardom by refraining from the politics of their communities: Wang followed the coattails of earlier “ABC” hip-hop groups like L.A. Boyz while A-Mei skyrocketed up the charts by primarily singing in Mandarin, the dominant dialect in Taiwan.

Wang Leehom and A-mei’s latest evocations of “Chinese-ness,” however, have allowed their cultural marginality to complicate existing tensions between Taiwanese pop culture and Chinese-American society in the former and aboriginal and Taiwanese/mainland identity in the latter. As evidenced by heated blogging online, Chinese-Americans have taken issue with Wang’s use of a racial epithet to describe his music. The comments in these blogs have questioned whether Wang’s music is important or unique enough to warrant a new category, and more importantly, have questioned whether the implicit analogy between the “c-word” and the “n-word” is applicable, necessary, or appropriate. In my opinion, the tension arises because Chinese-Americans are uneasy that Wang is freely using the word in Taiwan, where racism against Chinese people doesn’t exist in the way it does in America, where the word originated and continues to offend. In some ways, Wang has found a safe space where he can exploit a problematic word to bolster his own “hip-hop” (read: Black) credibility.

I don’t want to either support or dismiss the term “chinked-out music" -- that seems to me an irreconcilable problem --although I see merits in both arguments. Instead, I see this controversy as skirting an important issue. Through the term and the hybrid music it describes, Wang Leehom is exploring and announcing a specifically Chinese-American identity on a grand and public scale not possible in the United States. The rapper Jin, for example, failed to have the American public “learn Chinese” because rap plus Asian in the American mainstream is not yet a credible combination. But in Taiwan, a Chinese-American rapper can be so blatant about his/her own thug aspirations as to find a Chinese equivalent of African-American rap music's most notorious word. The word is surely problematic -- for example, it gives the wrong impression of the word to Taiwanese audiences -- but it symbolizes Wang’s own desire and ambition to popularize his own understanding of Chinese identity. It may not be surprising, then, that Jin appears on the title track of Wang’s latest album Heroes of Earth, showing his Chinese-American solidarity.

The relatively small ripple of controversy sparked by A-mei’s new song was diffused by A-mei’s own strategic silence, as well as a public indifference to the album. But for the short time when the Taiwanese press questioned the singer about her politics, what the word “Chinese” signified became a talking point. A-mei’s record label, Warner Music, issued an explanation: “'Chinese Girl' refers to 'hua ren nü hai' [girls of Chinese ancestry]. It’s because A-mei studied abroad in Boston and saw Chinese women struggle to make a living, yet appear resolute and beautiful, that she invited Machi to write the song.”

If we take this statement at face value, then the “Chinese” of “Chinese Girl” refers to the “Chineseness” on display to the rest of the world, not the “Chineseness” at the center of Taiwan/mainland cultural-political tension. The controversy initiated by the Taiwanese press actually draws attention away from the song’s true subjects: female pride and Chinese-American identity. It seems that for local critics, A-mei’s aboriginal ethnicity makes the song solely about Taiwanese identity and precludes her ability to evoke the word “Chinese” in speaking about other issues. It’s clear from the lyrics that she sings to confide these overseas Chinese women:

Yellow skin is your radiance

Black eyes let you see above to the wind and snow,

You run through a patch of sky,

You don’t need others to pen you in,

You don’t need others to make excuses for you.

Black, white, grey.

You make your own decisions,

Life is full of puzzles,

Squeeze yourself to the front of the pack,

If you can’t, I’ll help you push.

Go, go, go! You’re nobody’s empress,

You’re a self-respecting Chinese girl.

The emphasis on skin and eye color implies that the subject is considered physically different from those around her, while the emphasis on worldly struggle shows that the subject is an underdog in a harsh environment. These descriptions set up the struggle of an overseas woman such that when we hear the word “Chinese,” it is clear that this person is not in Taiwan, and certainly not directly implicated in Taiwan-mainland conflict. It’s further significant that, according to Warner Music, A-mei asked that the song be written by Machi, a Taiwanese hip-hop collective comprised mainly of Chinese-Americans.

Both Wang Leehom and A-mei’s deployment of various “Chinese” signifiers reflects a transnational and global understanding of Chineseness that upsets localized interests (Chinese-American with the former and Taiwanese with the latter). Songs on both albums depict the concerns of Chinese people traveling the world: in addition to A-mei’s overseas “Chinese girl,” Jin’s verse on “Heroes of Earth” boasts, “I keeps it blazing from Shanghai to Beijing, stop in Taiwan back to Hong Kong where they stay doing their thing.” Both songs are multilingual: A-mei sings the words “Chinese girl” in English, while Wang Leehom sprinkles his Mandarin raps with English words and Jin mixes a Cantonese line into his English rap. On the level of music, both are within a cosmopolitan rhythmic vernacular: “Chinese Girl” employs a bumping dance beat (which stands out from the more stripped-down acoustic style on the rest of the album), while “Heroes of Earth” relies mainly on hip-hop and R&B rhythm (which provides the metrical backbone to his integrated Beijing opera snippets). And both artists are defiantly not catering to interests other than their own. While this may lure criticism, they transcend the controversy by staying true to their own marginal conceptions of what it means to be Chinese in a global world.

pod, that was Victoria London. Several media people in Taiwan and even the variety show hosts, notably Jacky Wu, have mentioned of her as being coming from the Philippines.

Pero noong nasa Pilipinas pa siya, I didn't recognize her that much. However, what she said about her having a relationship with Wang Lee Hom is already denied by the camp of the prolific singer/songwriter.

With Lee Hom so busy with his work, he had no time for relationships. All the talk about his relationships with other celebrities are just mere talk, according to his publicist.

Tank up with Taiwan's next R&B prince
By Lee Xin En
April 29, 2006

SAY hello to Taiwan's newest export - Tank.

The 24-year-old singer has been touted as the next R&B prince, a possible successor to heavyweights Wang Lee Hom, David Tao and even Jay Chou.

Speaking on the phone to The New Paper from Taiwan where he is promoting his debut album Fighting, Tank sounded embarrassed about being hailed as the next big thing.

'Of course I'm honoured to be compared to them (Wang Lee Hom, David Tao and Jay Chou) but I'm just a musician in my own right....

Shu Qi jokes about Lee Hom

By Vivien
Updated: 2006-04-30 09:12

The famous actress Shu Qi is said to fall in love with the pop singer Alexander Wang (Lee Hom). They were spotted shopping and hugging in Japan. Being asked about this, Shu Qi just laughed and said,"We met each other in Japan, so decided to have a meal and do some shopping together."

Although the reporters all focused on their love scandal, Shu Qi did not show annoyance on the news conference about the TV seires "Red stroke famle" in Beijing on April 28th. It is Shu Qi's first TV seires. In the series, Shu Qi's role falls in love with five men. Asked which one she likes the best, she joked that she prefer the sixth one.

The new series will soon be on public all through the country.

STAFF REPORTER

The official list of nominees for this year's Golden Melody Awards was released last Friday, eliciting oohs and aahs as well as disapproval over its non-commercial appeal. Puyuma folk singer Kimbo, or Hu De-fu in Chinese, is the most surprising dark horse, securing six nominations including Best Male Singer, Best Chinese-Language Album, Best Lyricist and Best Composer.

Also with six nomi-nations, David Tao is the only pop singer able to match the powerful presence of Kimbo. Tao and the Aboriginal singer are up against Wang Lee-hom and Jackie Cheung, among others, for the best male singer gong....

Leehom will be responsible for the opening act of the Golden Melody Awards on June 10th. He will also re-arrange his song and lyrics from "Heroes of Earth" to present all the heroes within the industry, as well as rapping about this Golden Melody grand event. According to some sources, he will be adding Beijing operas, dancing, and his favourite instruments such as piano and drums. He just finished his performances in Mainland China and returned to Taiwan yesterday, immediately immersing himself into the preparation work for this opening ceremony.

Returning to Taiwan eating candies
On the afternoon of May 21st, Leehom wore a cap and sunglasses, with a candy in his mouth, showed up in casual wear at the CKS International Airport. He just returned to Taiwan, having just concluded his performances in Jiang Su in Mainland China.

According to sources, he doesn't usually eat lollies but his friend gave one to him that day, so he took it and ate like a little kid!

Leehom was invited by the Golden Melody Production Unit - Azio, to perform a modified version of "Heroes of Earth" with lots of dances for the opening ceremony. SonyBMG acknowledged that Leehom values this performance very greatly and also raised many ideas for it.

Leehom will adjust the lyrics to this song according to the Awards ceremony, and will use Rap to pay homage to the various heroes within the music industry. Because this opening act will be at the centre of everyone's attention, so it has to be exciting and special - that's why he is including Beijing Opera and grand group dances into his performance.

Azio and Leehom will soon have a meeting discussing the finer details of the performance. He has decided to wow (amaze) everyone at the show-opening.

Ever since Leehom was seen hand in hand with Shuqi shopping for Mother's Day present, rumours about their relationship are flying everywhere. However, he was seen sitting in front of his computer inside a restaurant all by himself last night. Who is he thinking about? Or is he just looking for some inspiration?

Strolling on street Roaring at the sky

Leehom took a taxi on the 24th at 9pm and went to "Tong Sushi" at Taipei's Xinyi disrict. He sat alone inside a box seat - he didn't order much but took this classy Japanese restaurant as a cybercafe, drinking tea and talking on the mobile. He even sat aimlessly in front of the computer many times.

Leehom was there for about an hour, and finally left when the restaurant was nearly closing. When he left the restaurant he was humming while walking. He first went to the Xinyi square next to Taipei 101, talking on his mobile as he walked. And then he sat on the steps in the square, suddenly standing up and roared at the sky with his hands up in the air.

Passing by Amei's home Stopped, watched and listened

After a stroll in the park, Leehom headed towards his house on Wu Xing Street in Taipei City. When he passed by Amei's residence (Star of Xinyi), he stopped and looked at the building, jumping and tying his shoe laces at the same time (seems like he's doing fitness training). May be Leehom didn't know Amei's off to US on a plane for her concert?

Students dragged him to birthday party

Leehom then walked to Taipei Medical University, and was recognized by a group of students going to a birthday party. He lowered his cap and hid behind the pillar but they still dragged him out and asked the school security guard to take some pictures.

Then the school's principal Zhongyi Xu also appeared. He gave Leehom a thumbs up and said "Leehom is the biggest superstar near our school. Welcome to the neighborhood!" After photos were taken, Leehom agreed to go to the party with Leehom and sang the birthday song together.

Leehom's agent expressed that Leehom usually like to go to "Tong Sushi" to write his songs. He was probably really happy about finishing a song, then went to get some fresh air at the park. He's a really nice person and that's why he agreed to the students' eager invitation to the party.

Earlier Wang Lee Hom was rumoured with Shu Qi. Yesterday, he especially came to Hong Kong to attend a watch promotional function. When the media asked him questions related to Shu Qi, Lee Hom refused to respond them all. He seems to be very ineffable.

Taken pictures together doesn’t mean there is love
Yesterday, Lee Hom appeared at a watch promotion at Times Square in Causeway Bay and attracted more than two hundred viewers. The atmosphere was indeed very lively. Besides singing and playing games, Lee Hom also didn’t forget to donate to charities. He especially donated ten signed watches, a guitar and leather wear for a live auction. All the money that is raised will be donated to the ‘Changing Young Lives Foundation’.

His fans showed him a very warm welcome, and some fans were even shouting “love you to death”. Other fans even requested a hug from Lee Hom and he generously obliged. The host asked whether Lee Hom currently has a girlfriend and he expressed that if he said it, it would be very dreadful. The host continued to tease him, pointing out that different girls often appears at his side and therefore the media could often snap pictures of him. Lee Hom immediately replied that he has a very good imagination. He emphasized that even if their pictures were taken, the situation isn’t necessarily the way people think it is.

Evading questions about rumours with Shu Qi
Lee Hom also revealed that besides his remuneration for filming this ad, he has also received twenty watches. The reporters asked whether he has given one to his girlfriend, he frankly said that if he did have a girlfriend he would give her one. Would he give one to his rumoured girlfriend Shu Qi? Lee Hom replied that it is quite a good gift to give to friends. So he could give it to his friends, family or co-workers.

Earlier, it was Shu Qi’s birthday. Asked whether Lee Hom has given her a gift, he didn’t comment. The reporter persisted and asked him whether he would still give her a gift to make it up. Lee Hom continued to evade the question and smiled that he hasn’t thought about it and that it is also a good idea!

Local celebrities are now gearing up for the 17th Golden Melody Awards, Taiwan's equivalent of the US Grammies, which is ready to roll on June 10 at the Taipei Arena. The Internet is already buzzing with predictions as who will take away the big prizes at Taiwan's most important musical event, which will be attended by some of Asia's hottest musicians. Yet one can easily detect some friction in the heated discussion over this year's less than star-studded nomination list.

...

To the dismay of many, Wang Lee-hom's Heroes of Earth, one of last year's best selling record, only earned him a single nomination for Best Male Singer, and with critics saying that his new album offers little that is different from his previous work, he is not favored for the prize.

Hom Run!

He won't say whether he's going out with actress Shu Qi, but the alleged lovebirds didn't have time together even while working on a music video, Lee Hom tells Ming Lee.

He's been painted as a workaholic and a perfectionist who guards his privacy jealously. Never mind the 30-year-old has been snapped snogging Taiwanese diva Ah Mei or shopping in Tokyo with screen siren Shu Qi.

In an interview before this, Lee Hom had refused to answer questions about his reported romance with Shu Qi, whom he worked with on the music video <<First Morning>> (off latest album Heroes of Earth).

Even if he had, it's best to take his words with a pinch of salt. After all, he's been known to enjoy making up stories during interviews just to exasperate journos. "I am a musician and my job is to make music," he says, almost through gritted teeth. "I donn't owe the tabloids anything."

Otherwise, the New York born singer-songwriter, who has an MA in Jazz Piano & Composition from the famed Berklee College of Music, is pleased to serve up a mattering of quotes.

Meanwhile, he's also into sneakers. In fact, when he saw this reporter, he asked eagerly if mine were from the Nikes Air Force 1 range. He was spot on. So, maybe the dude is merely misunderstood after all? You decide.

Teens: Nobody thought you could top what you've done on the last album Shangri-La. Still, Heroes of Earth has sold 1.8 million copies and pushed your chinked-out style even further. How much tougher was it to do?

Leehom: I don't think Heroes of Earth was particularly more diffcult. I treated it as Part Two of the last album. I wanted to make the chinked-out style more hip-hop yet more Chinese, and borrowed musical elements from traditional Chinese music like Beijing opera. Many characters in Beijing opera like General Yue Fei and Emperor Qian Long conquered the earth with their might and attitude. And I found the same attitude in rap, with its tough, edgy lyrics. I thought it was interesting.

This album marks your 11th year in music. If you could say one thing to the Lee Hom the rookie singer, what would that be?

I'd tell him to believe in himself. When I started off, people would advise me to trust the professionals! I was so respectful of everyone, and although sometimes I didn't feel convinced, I gave in. It took me five years to take control of my music, after winning Best Producer at the Golden Melody Awards. I am now firmer, tougher and more confident.

Heroes of Earth features a stellar line-up, including collaborations with May Day, A-Shin, American rapper Jin and Korean stars Rain and Lim Jeong Hee. What lessons did you pick up from them?

Besides being great musicians, the have a wonderful attitude. They believe firmly in hard work. Like Jin, the top freestyle rapper in the US. The day after I spoke to him about the concept for the title track, he recorded it. These people don't sit around waiting for stuff to happen. They work at their music.

You directed and starred opposite Shu Qi in the music video for <<First Morning.>> Any difficulty focusing on work, with such a beautiful woman around?

I was a little intimidated about having to work with her, because she's an award-wining actress. She is a fantastic performer who added a new dimension to the song. And since I'm still new at directing, it was an honour. (Slightly embarrassed) Er, I didn't have the luxury to [enjoy her company], because the record company was breathing down my neck and work hard to get done.

It seems that the harder the paparazzi tries to dig up dirt about your personal life, the harder you work at your music. And so the cycle continues. How do you try to overcome the frustration?

It can be discouraging when someone disrespects your work, especially those whom you don't even know. I constantly feel as if I have to guard against sudden attacks. It's like I am walking along the streets, and someone decides to spit from a window above. As celebrities, we don't have much of a choice even though we go through it. So I've learnt to cope with it and move on.

Heroes of Earth (celebration edition) is available in stores.

IT ALL ADDS UP

The numbers that make up Leehom's life

17/5/1976: Leehom was born in Rochester, New York, Us. He sang his first tune at age 3 and subsequently learned to play the violin and piano.

2: he has two brothers: the older one is a doctor while the younger one is a student. Most of his family and relatives are in the medical field.

19 years: he trail blazed his way into the Taiwanese music scene with a best selling album, <<Love Rival Beethoven>>, whose title track became a hit.

23 years: Lee Hom became the youngest winner at Taiwan's Golden Melody Awards when he bagged the Best Male Singer and Best Producer trophies.

1,600 points: His reportedly high score during the SATS meant he was accepted into prestigious universities such as Princeton and Yale. But he eventually went to Williams College to further his studies in music.

260,000: His <<Heroes of Earth>> concert in Taipei in March this year holds the record for his most number of tickets sold.

1,800,000: No. of copies Hero of Earth has shifted.

FOSSIL Watch presents WLH Live at Times Square in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

I think I was lucky to be at the right place at the right time- I was just going to Citysuper for my lunch when I saw this stage:

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g57/princecut/wleehom/wlh00784.jpg

And then I approached the guys who were setting up the stage and asked what time the event was scheduled. They said 2pm.

I went ahead and had lunch and then went around the mall, the FOSSIL watch shop was packed with fans and crews and so I avoided that area. Negative chance to get a decent pic with that crowd of screaming fans.

So I hung around the large area in front of stage and got a nice spot just behind the tv crews (there were cable channels along with local HK channels) and passed the time watching the WLH videos from the big screen. There were several female show hosts I guess something from MTV Asia or something- they looked perky and all. And they waved to the crowd a lot- so I guess these hosts are familiar on tv shows. I noticed “his” wooden guitar was displayed on stage. Same looking guitar we see in one of his videos. (Later when asked about the guitar, he admitted he’s never played that particular guitar displayed on the stage. And he laughed of course. I dunno if that’s just a joke or what.)

Several fans began to show up as well, and they had concert souvenirs like a towel and his new album in hand. My first time to see very eager fans,I was taken aback when the girl beside me began acting up when WLH came onstage.

A little while later, WLH came down from the 5th floor after promoting and formally opening the store and went to the stage. He was introduced by Fossil VIP guest of honor and WLH posed for pics while I think accepting something from the VIP (foreigner probably American) and he was all chatty, not seemed to be rushing to finish his sentences. He took time to talk aloud while thinking saying aaaahhh… ummm… I think he got jetlag like what they said.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g57/princecut/wleehom/wlh00778.jpg

So anyways a female host began calling fans (winners from contests?) and giving them fossil gift bags and stuff and they were also rewarded by getting their chance to embrace WLH and he was nice- he asked the host to take pictures of him and the fans when fans wanted pics with him on stage. But the host asked someone else to take the pictures haha. The female host I dunno who she really is but shes crazy, always asking about his preferred GF but was nice thru and thru. When the host began asking him about his important dates like past album launches, the fan beside me began shouting all the dates out and he smiled I think or laughed and just followed the answers shouted by the fan. I think maybe she’s form Taiwan bec. her Mandarin accent is good. She knew all the songs and the albums and when WLH momentarily rapped she sang her lungs out as well. So anyways, it seemed the fan’s answers were correct and WLH acknowledged her. Also he performed with a set of backup dancers and explained a lot how it is for him to rap- he said he’d have to be really quick all the time and stuff. Maybe that’s why when he was asked to do one song live he hesitated to do a rap. He also talked about how he is very particular about his watches, that there are diff watches for diff occasions- that’s why when asked which watch design he liked best he explained he cannot choose just one particular design.

Oops my post is too long but anyways I have to mention also I think the same stage was being put up later during the night near Excelsior Hotel that same nite but I failed to hung around to check if it was indeed for Fossil. But during the time they were putting it up, I saw a female tv host dressed casually going around asking young women something and the women shyed away- I guess they were gonna be interviewed by a film crew or something. Just a guess.

It has been a week since Leehom turned the big three-oh (30).

In these years many things have changed for Leehom, from his music style to his appearance, however one thing still remains the same: his passion for music. His love for music is as pure as 27 years ago when 3-year-old Leehom begged his parents for violin lessons.

These 30 years Leehom has dedicated and sacrificed much in his life for his music. Whether it is working alone in Taiwan with his family thousands of miles away in America, working on his Birthday and other important days, or not sleeping for days, in the end Leehom's deep rooted passion for music carries him through.

On his 30 birthday Leehom had 3 wishes: to create better music, to have more chances to share his music with fans, and to spend more time with family and friends.

Even amidst rumors with various female counterparts Leehom was still alone on his birthday. He spent his birthday working, filming a commercial in Hong Kong. Fans felt bad for Leehom, hoping that Leehom would find his “Wei Yi” soon. After all, Leehom has hit the big 3-0. Leehom’s older brother married at age 24, and Leehom is 6 years past that. Leehom joked that all he needed was his fans, and while filming his commercial Leehom showed his appreciation for his fans by making a video thanking them.

Leehom keeps in close contact with his fan clubs and on his birthday he made a video and thanked his fans for their continuous support; he promised that he would continue to work harder to bring more music. Leehom is very close to his network of fan clubs called “Ourhome,” in fact, his mom even sends out special crafts she makes at times to club leaders. Leehom makes videos on a regular basis for his fan clubs to wish his fan clubs happy birthdays, to give occasional greetings, and to give “thank you” notes. This makes his fans very happy. On his birthday he made a special video thanking his fans for all their support.

His Taiwanese fans collected hand-made cards from overseas fans, which they sent to Leehom's assistant who presented the present to Leehom on their behalf. They also gave him a Do-It-Yourself truck driver hat which has a dragon motive outlined by crystals. Other supportive fans have been posting birthday wishes two days prior to his birthday. They encourage Leehom and hope that he isn't bothered by the rumors surrounding his life. All they hope for is Leehom to stay happy and happiness is the most important thing that they want him to have.

The 17th Annual Golden Melody Awards (The Taiwanese equivalent of Grammies) will commence this Saturday June 10th.

The latest buzz is about the red carpet, what clothes the stars will wear, who will walk in with whom. One of the celebrities that is causing the most stir is Leehom. Leehom is a musician and that is as much as many know about him. He has been one of the few celebrities that has effectively hid his private romance life from the media. He perfers to focus on his music and doesn't like to use his public life to stir up publicity. But his secrecy is a double-edged sword. Many people respect him for having such a professional attitude, yet at the same time many prying eyes are trying to discover Leehom's private life. After a year full of defamatory rumours made by the media from his gay relationship, to a relationship with Victoria, to a relationship with Shu Qi, many are wondering who Leehom is taking onto the red carpet.

In 2002 Leehom walked the red carpet with Vivan Hsu, in 2003 he walked the red carpet with Amei, in 2004, he walked the red carpet with Shu Qi. However, this year is unique, Leehom is keeping it simple.

Leehom's little brother Leekai will be walking the red carpet with Leehom this year. Leekai currently is a junior at prestigious american university, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technolgy). Currently Leekai is on summer vacation and so Leekai is visiting Leehom in Taiwan. Leehom has always had a close relationship with his younger brother. Ever since Leekai was born, Leehom started babysitting him. As Leekai grew older Leehom took Leekai with him everywhere he went, even when he went to the movies or bowling with his friends. Whatever he was doing, he would always have a little Leekai by his side. Now that his little brother is grown up, it is still no different as Leehom brings him to the GMAs. http://67.18.37.14/html/emoticons/wub.gif

Leehom will also be performing with fellow ABC and friend Jin at the awards show. They two will sing a rearranged version of "Heroes of the World," called "Heros of the GMAs". Leehom invited Jin to perform at the show, this is the first time Jin has performed at such a high scale event in Asia.

About Leekai

Leekai is almost 10 years younger than Leehom and is currently 20. Ever since Leekai was young, Leehom and Leekai have had a close relationship. Leehom taught Leekai addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with cheerios when Leekai was only 2 years old. Leehom has also instilled in Leekai a love for music and Leekai plays the violin, the drums, and the piano. Like the rest of the Wang family Leekai is extremely talented, he speaks Chinese, French, Spanish, Latin, and English. Although he sings and has stared in school musicials, Leekai's main disposition, unlike Leehom, isn't music, but math. He currently is a junior at MIT.

Tanya Chua, Leehom Wang win top music awards

(updated 12:29 a.m.)

2006/6/11
TAIPEI, AFP

American-born Taiwanese hip hop star Leehom Wang and Singapore's singer-songwriter Tanya Chua took home top honors Saturday at Taiwan's Golden Melody Awards, the Chinese-language Grammys.
"I want to thank all my fans and friends. I am always inspired when singing to you," Wang said at the ceremony in the Taipei Arena after receiving the award for Best Mandarin Male Singer.

"I think I wasn't very good at singing before but I am determined to practice every day and practice makes perfect...I will continue the hard work," he said.

Wang's top-selling album "Heroes of Earth" features his unique blend of hip-hop beats infused with hints of Chinese opera. The heartthrob singer defeated big-name rivals such as Hong Kong's "God of Songs" Jacky Cheung....

Ganda ng Talk Asia! Napanood ko kahapon. I'm so glad I watched it kasi minsan ko lang mapanood si Lee Hom in English. :) Gusto ko pag tumitingin si Lee Hom sa camera. Aliw.

Congratulations also to Lee Hom for winning in the Golden Melody. Galing!

JenZhu and iruka, thanks for the pics!

iluvchoco, bilib ako kay Lee Hom. Isa talaga siyang genius. Nakapag-aral siya kahit nasa showbiz siya. May doctoral degree na nga ba siya? Ang alam ko yung Masters. Galing galing!
