Singapore’s too ‘hot’ for 5566

Zax Wang: There’s jubilation only before and after the presentation (of the Top 10 Most Popular

Female Artistes awards), because during the process, we were just too dumbstruck and

concentrated at looking at all the gorgeous artistes.

Tony Sun: Sam (Wang) even told me just now that he’s going to have a nosebleed!

Who's 5566?

5566… Who??

If you read that as anything but double 5, double 6, you probably thought this was
the number of seconds you spend queuing to buy Lim Chee Guan brand bak kwa (barbecued sweetmeat) for Chinese New Year rather than Taiwan's hot new boy band. They join groups such as like F4, B.A.D, Tension, Energy, and Comic Boyz in raising screams from girls, pre-pubescent or otherwise.

Why the name? Basically, this band is made up of 5 guys - Tony Sun, Zax Wang, Sam Wang, Rio Pang and Jason Hsu who dabble into 6 areas of entertainment - singing, dancing, acting, slamdunking, hosting and modelling.

According to their leader, Tony Sun, they chose Arabic numerals rather than Chinese words and alphabets to represent themselves, as these are recognised internationally and people have no problem translating the name.


We're here to EAT!

That's the revelation from their press conference hosted by 93.3FM DJ Zhou Chongqing.

Tony, 24, dressed in a smart khaki jacket like the others, said that he missed Hainanese chicken rice, which he'd tried on his last trip here in early January. This remark sparked off a joyous discussion among the other members. Their faces beamed when local specialities like Bak Kut Teh (spicy pork rib soup) and black pepper crab were mentioned.

"I guess the media knows what's our purpose [for coming] here now," Rio, also 24, joked in Mandarin.

Chongqing suggested for 5566's second album's songs to be named after Singapore's delicacies. Rio laughed, and launched into a mock introduction, "Yah, let's welcome 5566 with the song 'Bak Kut Teh'."

Who's who in 5566

Although Sam's the oldest in the group at 26, the commander of this quintet is ironically Tony, the smallest in build. Assisting Tony is Zax, while Sam sits as counsellor. As for 17-year-old Jason, the baby of the group, he considers his main role to pull down the mean age of 5566. The most "difficult" role of interacting with people falls on Rio - the Public Relations officer.

5566 - The best boy band with great vocals?

You've heard it often enough that boy bands are just a collection of overpaid pretty boys who can't sing. For what it's worth, 5566 was crowned "Best boy band vocals" by the Taiwanese media.

On this honour, Tony said, "We are not sure if we are the best but we work very hard to make everything the best, [whether it's] singing, acting, dancing or hosting. Whether we fit the bill, it's up to everyone to judge after listening to our album."

The polished sound didn't come effortlessly, however. They spent 2 months on 1 song "Yi Guang Nian" (loosely translated "One light year") until their producer was satisfied that 5566 had put their hearts and souls into bringing out the meaning of the song.

So who's the heartthrob and love letter magnet?

"I think Tony gets the most love letters," Jason answered.

Tony qualified that comment, saying, "Being in show biz for this long [since he was 17], I guess I've definitely received more fan letters than the rest… in terms of popularity, all 5 of us are on par with each other… but there's a dark-horse who's struck fear in the other 4 seniors and that's Jason. Jason's fans are very fanatic. Once Jason appears, they'll shout "Ahhh… 5566, I only want Jason!"

"Eh… when the fans shouted those words I'm very embarrassed and feel sorry for the other members," a humble Jason added.

Dodging fans 101

Fame may buy them a lush life, but there's the usual celeb cross to bear: being mobbed by fans for autographs and photos.

However the guys have devised strategies to escape. Jason chooses to stay at home or walk briskly among people; Rio chats with fans for a while but excuses himself, blaming a tight schedule for his haste while Sam normally goes out in groups. If problems arise, he'll get his friends to help. As for Tony, he also prefers to stay at home, making his house spick and span and listening to music. He might accept requests of autographs from small groups of fans but not for bigger ones. Witty Zax will stage an act with his handphone, discussing some "issues" with his record company when he meets fanatical fans. "Yes, yes! Oh yah… Very busy? Ok, I'll be right back." This line has saved him many times but now that we've talked about it, it's probably time to get a new strategy.


Hosts with the mosts

5566's unimaginatively titled First Album has topped the Taiwan's record charts for 3 weeks consecutively, selling 100,000 copies in a fortnight. They managed to dethrone the famous quartet F4's second album Fantasy 4 Ever, consigning it to the third place.

In Singapore, the 5 sold about 20,000 copies and secured the No.1 throne for 2 weeks on the Singapore Phonogram & Videogram Association (SPVA) charts since they came here for promotions.

Tony was still plugging their successful debut, saying "We spent a lot of time preparing our debut album… I really hope everyone can listen to it… you'll find rap by Jason, and Sam does fast tempo songs and 'R & B Duo Singing'."

"What's 'R&B Duo singing'?" Rio asked. "That's our strength," chimes Tony, "We ask and answer questions ourselves as we are all hosts. And I'll pass this question to Zax."

Zax hems and haws a bit before continuing, "We have like Tony singing the melody and I'll do the backup … our voices will be layered like tiers."

"Eh… I'll like to ask Sam and Jason about their rap…" piped Rio, attempting to steal Chongqing's "rice bowl". Zax then asked if Chongqing needed a toilet break. Naughty , aren't they?

How hot is 5566?

The answer is no more elusive than their meet-the-fans sessions…

Rain couldn't dampen 3,000 fans' enthusiasm to meet their idols. An hour before the event started, gloomy clouds heartlessly unzipped themselves on the anticipating fans. Instead of seeking shelter, more people gave up that comfort to join the crowd. Some even crossed the road in hopes of getting a better view of 5566. The over-crowded area caught the attention of policemen who came down to maintain order. In order to enable everyone to get a glimpse of 5566, fans selflessly took away their only hope of remaining dry - umbrellas. It was a touching scene to witness fans risking the chance to fall ill just to be considerate towards fellow fans.

UrbanWire spoke to a couple of them before the event started, on what they like about this quintet.

"I like Jason… he's same age as me!" commented Fadila, a 17-year-old Malay girl who never fails to catch My MVP Valentine, a drama serial starring 5566.

"They are superb… handsome…and can dance, sing and host," gushed Leong Mei Feng, 18. Her friends are especially devoted to Zax.

Their appeal, unlike for groups like F4, is not only restricted to the fairer sex. Sean Tan, 15, who supports Jason, said, "I like their songs… and My MVP Valentine."

About 4,000 supporters at Junction 8 were much fortunate than those at Heeren Shops. They were well sheltered under tentages; there were electric fans, which sadly, failed to work. It could be that their fans from Heeren Shops managed to rush down for the event, because 15 minutes before the event started, there seemed to be sudden surge of people, which resulted in a plunge in the oxygen level.

During the long hours of waiting, the only entertainment for the fans was the oft-repeated sing-along session to 5566's songs.

During the event, 5566 called back to Showbiz, a popular entertainment show playing on Channel U hosted by Zax, Jason and Zhang Shan Wei. They asked Singapore's fans to say hi to the audience back in Taiwan. They also announced that they will be coming back again later in June for a concert. So fans out there, watch out!

Besides these 2 events, there was another at Plaza Singapura on Sunday. Although it was pouring heavily that day, the event still attracted 5,000 eager supporters of the group.

Latest news: 5566 will be back very soon on Apr 5 for a concert in the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

"5566 For You Music score book" released already. Yesterday fans held one book each on their hands. 5566 sang live and sent out roses to fans. For this is their way of greeting fans Tuan Wu festival. On the other side, Ren Fu speak out loud his disapproval regarding the photos put on the music book right there and then in front of the press. The publishing company decided to add a free poster to repay fans. Making the fans happier than they are at the moment.

Ji Qin recently bought a second hand "SMART" car for about NT$450,000.00. Eventhough it's not brand new, but after all the repairs that have been made, it looks new again. She's so proud of her car because she's the only one who has this white car in Taiwan and nobody else.

These past few days Wang Renfu's chin became very pointed, he didn't went to a doctor for any plastic surgery, the reason for his chin to become pointed was due to excessive work. And on the 9th, he have to promote M One communication. On the 14, he have to back to Taiwan for the MTV channel concert where 5566 have to perform. In order to promote the complilation album of 5566 which include a French commercial song �gC�fest Si Bon�h. Members Zax Wang and Tony Sun went to one of the fine dining French Restaurant wearing chef uniform to apprentice for French cuisine in coordination with the French album they are releasing.



Tony and Zax have interest in cooking. They are eager to learn the way of cooking some French cuisine. After learning Tony have an idea of opening up a French Restaurant, and he wanted Zax to be the Chef there. Zax told Tony that if he really like the restaurant to have a life span, then he advice him to get other professional chef, for if Zax will be the chef, he think Tony�fs restaurant will not last more than 1month.





Yesterday 5566 only call out Tony and Zax for this cooking assignment. Sam and Jason have on interest in cooking, being a waiter is more appropriate for them. Tony said:�h if ever they are here, then the two of us would have to take care of them, because they will surely cut their finger when they are in the kitchen�h. Zax Wang is the first person among the 5566 members who have a house. He bought a house in Nan Kang area wherein the house there is not cheap. and although he does not have the chance to sleep in 48 hours yet,
but he does not complain about it, because this series is his first
leading role drama series. He even took out personal money as his

TFKC will start airing on January 16th on TTV, TFKC is based on a Ghe Tou story drama series. Yesterday Ming Dao, Li Wei Lien and Cyndi Wang went to TTV as special guest of Zax Wang and Qiao Qiao for TFKC. Idol group 5566 has been busy with the shooting of their newest
soundtrack. Two MV and other related matters for this soundtrack are
done continuously for 18 hours. This may seem like an impossible
work but these guys have over come all difficulties with their
effort. Recently because of the pressure from the shooting of the
series and New Year eve performances, the work schedule of CD
release for January 21th was quite delayed, so it adds to the
pressure of 5566. On the early morning of January 4 until
afternoon, 5566 rush all work for the two Music Video and related

finally come to an end so they hurriedly went to the recording

Victims. But things have not been so smooth in the process of making

punching scene as in reality, they have punched each other for so
many times, for the last take Tony and Zax due to exhausted body

distance between them and hit each other so hard, that they both

quite curious of what will the outcome of this series be, the main
reason is because of Tony and Zax personality. People determine
that there will be lots of surprises in this series.

Two of them are Ghe Tou fighter in the series, but each of them has
their own expertise. Tony�fs expertise is on the hand motion
(punching); while Zax�fs expertise is on the foot motion (kicking).
Zax proudly expressed:�h Hollywood actors would gain or lose weight
for the movie they are doing, we did also do lots of preparations
for this series, Tony learned lots about the punching style while I
went to some kind of reflexology in order to pull or stretch the
muscles in my legs, to ease the kicking motions on the series, now I
can stretch straight my legs up to my head already! In the first few
episodes I will not have exposed much what I have learned, but later

Zax Wang also do many assignments prior to this series TFKC. Zax
expressed that he used to review the action scenes, movements and
expression of Fan Ting Long Zhi( Japanese actor who is the co-star
of Andy Lau on a certain movie). Fan Ting love to face his back from
the camera when talking, I guess it is how he express his charm, it
looks cool!�h He also review the GTO Ma-Lah teacher series of Fan
Ting in which he is a cool teacher.
TTV General Manager Hu Han Shin said, they have joined hands with
SET three years ago on the series �gLavander�h. Zax did not mind much
now what the result of the series be, �gI have invested in a
NT$200,000.00 revised speaker set and radio system, and DVD on my
car, the reason is that we are usually shooting the series without
sleep on set, so when ever I feel sleepy I can use it to play games
and the like!�h

While 17 years old Qiao Qiao is not that much worried of her
performance on the series, �gmy father used to be a physical
education teacher, so I did not worry about shooting action scenes.
But I do worry about school, because I have taken my leave from
school for a couple of days already, worry it might affect my

Tony Sun and Zax Wang are getting less and less sleep these days as they rush for the shooting of TFKC series. Both of them sleep for only 3 hours per day. Aside from shooting, they are recording various shows and attending charity works lately. Zax teased Tony if he likes to have a energy drink. According to Zax, it is not that he got less sleep that make him unease, but the reason is that he need to portray many kinds of expression in a day. On the series, he has to be a cruel face person, but later on he need to make face as happy face, comedian person on the set.



Tony got pimples lately because of lack of sleep. So he used pimple-removing paste as a remedy. Aside from pimples, Tony have lost his wallet lately, Zax teased him to be unfortunate lately because aside from wallet, his car parked at the shooting area was also hit and damage, so he just rode bike to and from work right now. He got inflammation of intestine days ago.



Days ago Tony got his wallet lost on the shooting area. According to him, it was to ok to lost it but the complicated thing is that his identification cards, health card, credit card and other important document are hard to process now that he don�ft have time to settle these things. So he was not able to sleep due to concern for his lost document. Fortunately, 5566 went to Kao Shiong today to visit the sick kids so he used this chance to go back home and process the important papers he need. This good deed may be a blessing in disguise.



Tony even call out the attention of the thief, according to him it is ok to lost the wallet and money, but he hope the thief will return his important documents. Among the 5566 members, only Sam and Jason have healthy body, so they regularly go to the gym to get fit. �gBoth of them are tired so much of the shooting of TFKC series, so the both of us want to get enough fit, we can substitute them in case they need to take a rest or slow down a bit!�h

According to director Peng Kay, Tony Sun and Zax Wang are not human? Because of the shooting of the series TFKC, the three of them are always together for rushing the series. Director Peng Kay expressed that he honestly his idea of 5566 is zero!�h He is the ever famous strict director whom many artists he have scolded before in front of many co-stars and workers. Many people think that Tony and Zax were scolded. Both Tony and Zax have certified �gwe have not been scolded by the director even once�h.

The director�fs deepest remembered thing about them, there was once Tony wore short sleeve shirt in a fight scene. When the camera is not on him, he would wear thick jacket and jogged up to the mountain and run down again in order increase body metabolism. He even has bruises on his face plus have several activities and promotional activities. Aside from these things, the director also saw that he did not sleep for several days already and still maintained the energy needed for this series. While Zax used to be kicked straight in the butt one time, he just silently go to a corner and not complain about any hurt body parts or any thing to anyone on the set. The director was glad he has worked with such good artists and production team. SET general manager Chang Rong Hua even praises Tony for he would be a big star in the future. It is very important to have both good system and people in order to produce this kind of good series.

Due to fame, 5566 have difficulty in dividing their time for their shows, have formally submitted their resignation for their hosting job in their Friday show Zhong Yi Da He Chai. And the show who will take over the Friday schedule will be Ku Kua.

5566's last year schedule for Zhong Yi shows were full. Other that hosting Young Guns, they also hosted CTS Dou Zhen which has stopped taping because of Mr. Fighting which is shown in TTV. The latest news is that the show Tony, Zax, Gino and JR's hosting will also stopped taping because Tony and Zax needs to rush the taping of Mr. fighting so they have decided to submit their resignation for the hosting job and have cancelled the schedule of entering the studio this week for the taping of Zhong Yi. And the last episode of Zhong Yi will be shown this Friday. In the future, the only show that 5566 have that will be shown in cable will only be Young Guns.

Jungiery Management tries to lessen the hosting job of 5566 for them to concentrate more on acting. Due to their fame, their mother studio SETTV, have decided to enter the Saturday and Sunday Zhong Yi Battlefield in the first part of the year and 5566 will host one of the shows. TVBS-G is also having discusion with them regarding new programs to be work together. And the offers from other station have never stopped.

Wu Chuen Hao, 5566's manager said the 5566 have a very busy schedule this year. Specially Tony and Zax, who due to rushing the taping of Mr Fighting, doesn't have time to rest. And they will be like this until end of April or first week of May when the series will be complete. After the taping of the series, 5566 will have to enter the recording room to record their 3rd album which will be released by summer. And the last half of the year 5566 will dedicate their time in Mainland China. The top management of TTV have understood the situation of 5566 and have agreed to accept the resignation. After hearing this, Tony and Zax have relaxed because with this they will have additional time to rest.

What's interesting is the two 5566 shows which where stopped was produced by Zhen Yi Lin. MR Zhen yesterday have smiled and said that they have a good working relationship and that in the future they still have chance to work together.
