episode mamayang gabi..grbe babaha na naman ng luha sa mga kabahayan!!!

han-sg prepares and brings meal to the king. outside the king's dining hall, jae-jo-sg stops han-sg from entering. han-sg states she must greet the king. jae-jo-sg tells her to wait outside until she is called in. jae-jo-sg informs the king jung-sg left the palace overnight. the king orders his guard to send his well-wish to jung-sg. the royal doctor, sent by the king, arrives at jung-sg's room accompanied by gam tuk-poh and his wife. the doctor checks jung-sg and announces she has already left the world. yun-saeng mourns aloud while jang-geum and the gam's weep silently.

han-sg continues to wait outside the dining hall. the head guard returns and gives han-sg a sign of bad omen by shaking his head. the guard reports to the king that jung-sg passed away. the royal doctor states jung-sg had already stopped breathing when he arrived. outside, han-sg falls to her knees in sorrow.

yun-saeng calls out to jung-sg while jang-geum holds her down at jung-sg's cremation. jang-geum dispurses jung-sg's ashes into the river as she remembers jung-sg's dying wish. jung's voice: "as for me i regret i had to spend my life inside the palace. so cremate me and spread my ashes into the water so that through the flowing of the river i may wander around from place to place"

[lots of flashback to the past as jang-geum remembers the impact jung-sg had on her life]

jang-geum and yun-saeng return to the palace and finds han-sg standing alone in the rain. yun-saeng expresses her sorrow. jang-geum asks han-sg why she is outside. a servant arrives to tell han-sg no one from the other kitchen depts will come out to help with the scheduled event of making pickled turnips and potatoes. with a stern voice, jang-geum reminds han-sg she is the head of soo-rak-gan and that she must pull herself together, and asks the servant to escort han-sg inside.

jang-geum tells yun-saeng that they both must finish all the work infront of them. yun-saeng cries and says she can't but jang-geum states she is carrying out jung-sg's orders and asks yun-saeng to hurry and work. jang-gem and yun-saeng gather the child maids and the servants and work on the chore overnight. young-roh, who is spying on them, is shocked by the progress she sees.

jang-geum brings food to han-sg. han-sg refused to eat but jang-geum begs her to eat. the messenger arrives to inform han-sg of a crisis from water seeping into the kitchen overnight.

meanwhile the supervisors are meeting with the royal guard who is angry that han-sg who once again missed the supervisor meeting. (han-sg didn't know about the meetings). the head guard finds han-sg and expresses his disappointment and frustration at han-sg.

jang-geum and yun-saeng tried to solicite help from all the other depts for another food-preparation event. min-sg and chan-ee tell jang-geum all the other supervisors are protesting han-sg's status and min-sg doesn't want to be involved in any trouble by crossing the picket line. han-sg tells the royal guard about the situation and asks for his help. the guard goes to see jae-jo-sg who tells him the queen already knows about the situation and tells him to stay out of it.

geum-young and choi-sg discuss their next scheme. master choi worries about the queen's reaction but choi-sg says the queen won't fire all the supervisors just because of one person (han-sg) so they should not worry.

han-sg finds out from min-sg about the protestor's meeting and goes there. all the other supervisors blatantly states their refusal to recognize her as the kitchen head. choi-sg gets a member of the royal family involved (i think a wife of one of the princes who is elder oh's sister). the lady complains to the queen about the situation and the queen begins to wonder if she should fire han-sg. han-sg tells jang-geum they should go tell the queen she's stepping down. jang-geum tries to talk han-sg out of it by saying han-sg was not only her mentor but a mother figure to her since she was little. if han-sg steps down then jang-geum will give up on her as well.

the queen meets with lady ja-soon who tells the queen the decision in the matter regarding han-sg is up to the queen. han-sg arrives and asks the queen for a re-contest and if she wins to have the queen give her official order to inagurate han-sg as the new lead. jang-geum overhears from outside the room and rejoices.

The queen dowager then summons all the Kitchen Court Ladies and all the Royal Kitchen Staff to commune at the Royal Kitchen as she was to decree. The Court Ladies who were backing Lady Choi boycotted on hearing this thought they have won and the Queen Dowager was to fire Lady Han from her post and elect a new Head. The Queen dawager inform that the Queen have a decree. The Queen reprimand the Kitchen Court Ladies for their insubordination for going against appointment of Lady Han and should be punished. Although the Queen Dowager was displeased with the background of Lady Han, the Queen Dowager never said in the open. So the appointment of Lady Han as Head of the Royal Kitchen stand. The Queen admit there is a flaw in the matter as lady Han never competed. There will be a re-match. The Queen asked whether Lady Han & Lady Choi agree to the term of the re-match and both agree. Facing the masses. she tells the Kitchen Court ladies that they will have to abide by the result of the rematch. All Kitchen court ladies will acknowledge the results.
The topic is cook rice, the essential basis in Korea cusine. To be fair, the Queen supplies the same utensil and ingredients to Lady Han and Lady Choi so everybody is on the same par. The Queen asked that the ones who are competing are the only one allowed to stay and the rest will have to follow the Queen and the rest of the entourage to the dining hall. On the way to the dining hall, Lady Min says that it is very hard to judge as cook rice is a simple and both Lady have cooked it for almost 30 years and not seen as difficult. Then to be fair, not be bias to anyone the Queen put the re-match to a vote. Democracy on an infancy stage in Korea. The Queen is seen as an intellect. The Queen told them that the rice will be put in two types of bowl, a bronze and a porcelain and have to vote on which bowl they prefer. The bowls of rice where presented and the put their preference. The vote are pass up and the Queen asked both Lady Choi and Lady Han to come in and the Queen asked of the comments of the rice. The kitchen court ladies says that the porcelain rice is nice and soft in texture. A few agree.

The Queen says that the winner is most certain and asked who cook the rice in the porcelain bowl. Lady Choi proudly announced that she is the one who cooked the rice and explained her technique by pressure cooking the rice. The Queen asked her personal Court Lady to make the result known, she announced that the porcelain bowl have 5 votes, by the matter of simple arithmetic. The Queen announce that Lady Han won. There were total of 13 Kitchen court ladies.

The Queen Dowager was suprised at the result as the comments came that the porcelain bowl rice was nice and soft. The Kitchen Court Ladies then said although the rice was soft they prefer harder rice. (Because of gender inequality the woman in Korean can only eat the crust that stick at the bottom of the pot, claiming that the rice crust are nutritious, it is just an excuse). So most woman will prefer harder rice as they were used to it or it is the only type of rice they can eat). Another claim she prefer very soft rice, so she chose the bronze bowl. The Queen Dowager claim how can a pot of rice can cook two degree of rice. Lady Han explain by cooking rice separately in a small inside with the density of water require. Lady Han explained the the King prefer harder rice while the Queen prefer softer rice. The Queen then comments why she could get her prefer rice every alternate day. She further says that it is usual they should be well versed on the Royal preference but how does she know the preference liking of each Kitchen Court Ladies. Lady Han explained that most of the Court ladies here, grew up together.

The Queen Dowager is astonished by Lady Han thoughtfulness in remembering each one liking that there is no question that she is rightfully the Head of the Royal Kitchen.

The Queen decree that Lady Han is the winner by count of votes and she will have absolute power over the kitchen and the orders from Lady Han will be sanctioned by the Queen and made it so. The Queen firmly wanted the Kitchen Court Ladies to understand the decree and acknowlege Lady Han as winner. The Queen Dowager reiterated the Queen decree. All Kitchen Court ladies agree.

However, the current Korean Wave is focused on a few stars and dramas, and the challenge remains to take it one step further and make it a wider-ranging cultural phenomenon. In order for this boom to be a sustainable, self-reproducing source of Korean cultural contents, we should develop contents covering the wider culture of Korea as a whole.

In this context, Dae Jang Geum perfectly serves the purpose. The drama shows various aspects of the palace culture such as food, costumes, medical science, and traditional games through conspicuous, yet subdued visual expressions. In so doing, it plays the role of a messenger to let Korean culture and beauty known to more people in Asia.

There are a few cases in which a broadcasting company and the local government authority in their joint efforts, turned an outdoor set into a tourist attraction. Still, there has never been an attempt to create a theme park from an outdoor drama set. The existing set-turned tourists spots show only the drama set itself and therefore, there is not much to see other than that. But the Dae Jang Geum Theme Park combines the drama scenes and stories into a particular theme and provides various things to see and experience.

Unlike the other drama sets, this theme park didn¡¯t just establish the outside of a building, but actually reconstructed exactly the same whole building of the palace including all the elements inside it, except the size which is smaller than the original. So, the palace is so realistic that visitors can see what a palace actually looks like both in and outside.

Constructed along the geographical lines of the bottom of the mountains, the theme park features uniquely different sets benefiting from the natural hilly geography, and stair case-type facilities designed to allow scenes to be filmed from various angles. All the properties are displayed exactly the way they actually were used in the drama, and a wide selection of videos and photographs are available for visitors to learn about the traditional Korean culture and its history in an effort to serve as an educational facility as well.

Dae Jang Geum is a story of a woman named Suh Jang Geum in the 15th century during the King Jung Jong era. In the palace of the Chosun Dynasty, there were many different titles for women depending on their responsibilities, such as Saeng Gak Shi, Na In, Sang Gung, Eui Niu(medical assistant), Mu Soo Ri, etc. They were experts on their own field who were assigned to work in Soo Ra Gan(the royal kitchen), Chim Bang, Sae Dap Bang, Dae Bi Jeon, Dong Gung Jeon, Hoo Gung Jeon, etc., according to the laws and rules of the palace.
Suh Jang Geum was a professional career woman as a medical assistant. Back in the Chosun Dynasty when sexual and class discrimination was the norm of the society, it was almost a miracle that a female medical assistant from a low class became a medical official, particularly the royal doctor which were positions held exclusively by noble and middle class officials. It would not have been possible without possessing exceptional medical skills as well as integrity and character.

Suh Jang Geum is the one and only female royal doctor to date and throughout the history of Korea including the Three-Kingdom Era, Goryo Dynasty and Chosun Dynasty. The current presidential doctor is also a male.

oh well, magaling talagang mang-uto ang mga chois, pero kahit na! sila ang mga traydor sapagkat sila ang tumatalikod sa kung ano ang tamang gawin, at sa halip sila ay nagpapabulag sa katotohanan na sila ay nasisilaw lamang sa kapangyarihan kung kaya't sila ay napapayag ng mga chois upang magrebelde. napakasama talaga nila. dapat magising na rin ang reyna't hari sa katotohanan, kung ano talaga ang tunay na kulay ni madam shin at ng mga chois, upang mabawasan na ang gulo sa loob ng palasyo.

hayy, mahirap ang dinanas ni madam jung na hirap. halos maiyak na ako kagabi dun pa lang sa ABANGAN BUKAS nung isang gabi, akala ko kasi mawawala na si madam jung, mamaya pa pala. paniguradong marami tayong aabangang mga eksena sa jitp sa lunes at mamayang gabi na rin. hahagulgol pa siguro ang iba. kawawa naman si yon sang.

In South Korea, there had been a lot of arguments about how the lyrics of this song should be interpreted. As a result, a lot of different interpreations have been rampant. Eventually the song writer, Seh-Hyun Ihm, revealed that it is a song about palace girl's life who should be absolutely loyal to the king. - In actual history, the King did fall in love with Jang Geum, but he can't do anything to save Jang Geum after his death... (Nothing much is written about Jang Geum in history, so the above statement is FALSE!)!

King Jung Jong's Wife-Queen, Queen Munjeong was a major historical figure in Korean History. She ruled Korea from behind the veil with absolute power for 8 years. Thus, Jang-geum was not the only woman who broke through barrier of gender inequality and sexual discrimination. A touch of this was mentioned in the series.(Gerry Tan)

During the reign of Jungjong (the 11th Joseon King) there was a major conflict between two Confucian factions. One is the Yanban, to which the Right Minister Oh belongs. These Yanban were descendants of the group responsible for King Sejong's (4th Joseon King) accession to the throne, and as a result of this service, accumulated a great deal of power and wealth ever since. The other faction is the Shilin to which the Left Minister Pak and Min Jung Ho belongs to. They (Shilin) believe that a person should be suited for a position based on merit and not on breeding and connections, thus in direct opposition to the Yanban code. This is truly the Shilin philosophy and the King took it a step further by appointing Jang-geum as his Personal physician and bestowed her the title of Daejanggeum.(Gerry Tan)

Daejanggeum is the one and only female to be a King's Personal physician. Until today even the Presidential Personal physician is still a male. (Gerry Tan)

The King tried to push for reforms by appointing Jo Gwangjo to his administration who tried but failed and suffered tremendous setbacks. He was subsequently exiled. In 1521, an event occured when the Yanban pressed for Jo's execution rather than exile. This served as a historical basis for the Sulfur Duck incident where Lady Court Han was accused to be in league with Jo. (although the character of Jo is not seen but references to him were made throughout the story, I think it is common knowledge that the Koreans know this historical incident but we are oblivios to Korean Joseon History are keep in a limbo on who Jo was. -There was supposed to be a kissing scene of Lee Young Ae and Ji Jin Hee, but Lee Young Ae thought it was not appropriated, hence they did not.

-Court Lady Han's character(played by Yang Mi-Gyeong) was supposed to die earlier. However, due to the fans' protest, the director 'delayed' her death scene.

-Park Eun-Hye was originally cast to take the role of 'Soo Jang-Geum', but later on when it was confirmed that Lee Young Ae acting in the show as well, Park Eun-Hye was re-cast again to take over the role of 'Yeon-Sheng'.

-Kyun Mi-Ri was supposed to play the role of Court Lady Han(Hangsanggung), but later on Yang Mi-Gyeong took over the role.

-On sunday, (May 1st 2005) TVB has finally finished airing this series in HK, and the last episode broke the golden record by achieving 44 average rating as well as 49 at the highest point. This series just beaten ' Nan Chan Lui Aui'/war of the genders acted by Dodo Cheng and Davo Wong in year 2000 by only one point.

she was challenged by Jang-geum kasi. actually very touching yung challenge ni Jang-geum sa kanya. from the original cd, jang-geum's voice was soft yet so firm lalo na nung sinabi nya na "i lost both of my parents when i was 8. since i met you when entered this palace, i have considered you as a mother and a teacher. but i don't like a mother you easily gives up and i don't like a teacher who easily resedes."

Spoiler for tonight's episode. yung mga ayaw ma-spoil, i beg you not to read it. for those who can't watch tonight, here's the episode that's gonna happen. the competition will go on, Lady Han is undeniably unique in her own ways and firm in her principles and convictions, she will still win the title of being the lofly madam to the extent na wala nang magagawa yung ibang top madams but to submit to her full authority as she boldy requested to the empress dowager (inang reyna) that once she wins the competition, she'll have the full authority over the imperial kitchen.

the queen talked to the top madams na sila ang magja-judge nung rice. so they were seated infront of the empress dowager and the queen. merong paper and pen beside them, pagkatikim nila, they'll write their choice which bowl tastes better.

lady han's rice will be put in a bronze bowl while lady choi's rice will be put in a white porcelain bowl.

some of them commented on how good the rice in the white porcelain bowl is. then the queen asked who did cook that rice. syempre inangkin ni lady choi....natural proud ang lokah! but then the queen asked for the result of the paper, 5 voted for the white porcelain bowl while 9 voted for the bronze bowl. nagtaka yung empress dowager...bakit daw mas nanalo sa botohan yung bronze bowl pero iba naman ang comment nung mga top madams. then the other top madams commented din na di sila pare-pareho ng gusto. merong iba na malambot ang gusto, merong iba na medyo matigas ang gusto. the empress dowager asked lady han how she cooked the rice. sabi nya, she placed a small bowl in the middle para mas malabot yung portion at medyo mas matigas yung nasa labas na portion. then she explained na kilala nya na yung king eh mas gusto yung mas matigas na rice at yung queen eh gusto yung mas malambot na rice. she knew the likes and dislikes of the royal family. sabi nung queen, kaya daw pala every other 2 days ay nakakatikim sya ng malabot na rice. the empress dowager was so much impressed with her cooking talent because she also knew the likes and dislikes of her colleagues (the other top madams). then the empress dowager asked lady kung bakit nya alam yung gusto ng mga kasamahan nya. sabi nya, junior palace girls pa lang daw sila, magkakasama na sila kaya nalaman na nya yung mga likes and dislikes nila. the empress dowager told her that she's proud of her and she's not regretful that she chose lady han as the lofty madam during the first competition, because her cooking is from the heart.

natural, ngitngit na naman sa galit sila lady choi at geum-young, pati sila pan-sol choi at madam shin....isama mo na rin si yong-non! hahahahah!!!!

Di pwede i-compare ang JITP sa Only You malayong-malayo both lalo na sa quality ng story ;)

ay oo naman! ibang-iba talaga ang JITP as compared to Only You. i won't be bias ha. JITP shows kasi the traditional korean way cooking which are very exemplary while Only You shows the modern way of cooking such as italian cuisine, etc.

kung mapapansin nyo yung set-up ng both novels, JITP is a North Korean set-up (places like Changdeokgung Palace, Naganeupseong Folk Village, Jeju Island, ect.) while Only You is a South Korean set-up (all places in Seoul, South Korea).

JITP is not just a kilig factor. mas marami kang matutununan from here...the value of life (Jang-Geum's fighting for her life just to vindicate the name of Lady Han), respect to the authority (Lady Han's authority to the non-submissiveness Lady Choi and Geum-Young and The Royan Family's authority over all), firm to principles and convictions (Madam Jung passed this character to Lady Han because she never wanted greed and anger over the palace), forsaking all for the sake of love (Deputy Administrator Min is willing to pack his things just to run away with Jang-Geum), and many more!

Only You on the other hand is a story of two lovers who ended up living together with their son because they faught for their love for each other. Gillian's character is very strong because she was able to raise up her son but yet so weak without her family.

Maraming comparisons about these two novels. but then, kung story ang basis, I like JITP so much because Jang-geum's life is a perfect example of LOVE, PATIENCE AND PERSEVERANCE. Although there are times that she's been wanting to give-up, but to add kilig factor to the story, Deputy Administrator Min has always been there to help her stand again!

Ok, let's balance a bit about life. Just like Deputy Administrator Min who has always been there for Jang-geum, helping her to all of her endeavors, there's One Person too in ourlives who could do much as what he has done to Jang-Geum. He's just around us. I hope that much as you have much time to wacth JITP, you'll also have much time spending with the ONE who could help you to LOVE, to be PATIENT and to PERSEVERE! This is one of the best Korean series ever produced no wonder why it rated so well even on different countries. Even with the story loopholes like how was Madam Choi able to escape from the place during that critical time ? or howcome the Empress is always gone whenever the King gets sick?, confusing time frames, characters who seems not to get old, it didn't diminished the quality of the entire series which is very rare. JEWEL IN THE PALACE A REAL JEWEL FOR GMA-7 SINCE it started its telecast in November, "Jewel in the Palace", continues to rate very high in GMA-7's telebabad block.

It's not surprising as the story of its heroine Jang Geum (Lee Young Ae) is getting more engrossing.

Just last week, Jang Geum and her mentor Lady Han (Yang Mi-kyeong) had to face more obstacles than ever before.

The villainous Lady Choi (Gyeon Mi-ri), upon being appointed temporary head of the Royal Kitchen, sent Lady Han and Jang Geum away to serve the envoys from the Ming dynasty.

Theirs was a difficult task. Lady Han was even reprimanded by the head of the envoys who did not like the food they served as he prefers rich and flavorful dishes. Lady Han reasoned that they made dishes she thought would be good for the envoys' health, but this did not save her from being punished.

Jang Geum then pleaded with the head that she would cook for them, and if his health still does not improve afterwards, he may punish her. She did cook dishes they enjoyed but Lady Choi tried to steal the credit.

Luckily, the Queen learned of the truth and reprimanded them. The head envoy then thanked Lady Han and Jang Geum for improving his health through the food they cooked for him.

The contest for choosing the new head of the Royal Kitchen is then conducted. Lady Choi is determined to win at all costs and ordered her brother to kidnap Lady Han. Jang Geum and her friend Yeon-Sang (Park Eun Hye) do not know what to do and what fate awaits her will unfold this week. Will the treachery of Lady Choi be discovered by the Queen or will Jang Geum be banished from the palace forever?

To find out the answer, tune in on "Jewel in the Palace", an international hit aired weeknights after "StarStruck," another hit that rates very high each night.

-There was a person named Min Jeong-Ho, but he had no romantic relationship with Jang-Geum at all(What a disapointment!!!)

-Geum Young(Jing Ying) and Court Lady Choi existed in actual history. However, the historical Court Lady Choi was 10 times far worse than the one portrayed in the show. She allegedly even forced Geum Young into being one of the King's comcubine, apart from making Jang-Geum's life miserable.

-There was supposed to be a kissing scene of Lee Young Ae and Ji Jin Hee, but Lee Young Ae thought it was not appropriated, hence they did not.

-Court Lady Han's character(played by Yang Mi-Gyeong) was supposed to die earlier. However, due to the fans' protest, the director 'delayed' her death scene.

-Park Eun-Hye was originally cast to take the role of 'Soo Jang-Geum', but later on when it was confirmed that Lee Young Ae acting in the show as well, Park Eun-Hye was re-cast again to take over the role of 'Yeon-Sheng'.

-Kyun Mi-Ri was supposed to play the role of Court Lady Han(Hangsanggung), but later on Yang Mi-Gyeong took over the role.

Dae Jang Geum -- background information

Dae Jang Geum (http://stillwatersca.blogspot.com/2005/04/thoughts-on-dae-jang-geum.html) is set in the late 1400's and early 1500's. It takes place in Korea during the Joseon (Chosun) Dynasty. The story takes place around the capital city of Hanyang (Seoul) and also for some time the Cheju Island. I'll try to gather some historical information alluded to in the drama, although I don't claim this is accurate information, and instead of dismissing this page outright for its errors, try to leave constructive feedback instead. Translations are approximate and may not conform to any standards.

This post is only occasionally updated, but check back if you want. Last update at 10PM PST on August 25, 2005. There are spoilers in this post.

Hanseong/Hanyang:
Hanyang was the name for modern-day Seoul. It was also called Hanseong after the Joseon Dynasty took over. The name Seoul was a much older historical name for the city, and was reinstated after the end of the Japanese colonial period. The drama sometimes speaks of tigers, a reference to Siberian tigers that have long since disappeared from Korea but still lingered in tales. The Han River runs through Seoul, and that's where the historical names came from.

The name of Seoul remains in dispute even today. Whilst Seoul has been called exactly that for a century already, the Chinese continued to refer to it as "Hancheng" (Hanseong), which was a name with Chinese connotations. In addition, Hanseong literally means Han City, and may be interpreted wrongly by nationalists; Han being synonymous with China, Han City can be wrongly interpreted as "Chinese city" or "city that was once Chinese territory" or "city of a people that were once Chinese subjects" (c.f. the English word "niggardly").

The controversy escalated as the mayor of Seoul changed the official Chinese name of Seoul to "Shou'er". However, many Chinese continue to say "Hancheng" for various reasons (c.f. St Petersburg and Leningrad). One reason is that "Shou'er" sounds ugly and un-Chinese to some people, and other reasons revolve around tradition, habit, clarity, politics, nationalism, and so on.

Monarchs and Politics:
Two monarchs that reigned during this period were Yeonsang-gun (1476-1494, reign 1494-1506) and later King Jungjong (1488-1544, reign 1506-1544), who was Yeonsang-gun's half-brother.

Yeonsang-gun was overthrown in 1506 and replaced by King Jungjong. He was exiled and died a deposed king. Yeonsang-gun's rule was noted for its suppression of the Confucian intellectuals. He challenged the system and persecuted Confucians, but failed and was succeeded by King Jungjong who was put in place by Confucian supporters. Yeonsang-gun was thus seen by many as a tyrant, perhaps the worst tyrant ever in Korean history; Yeonsang-gun died on Ganghwa Island, to which he was exiled, a few months later. As you will see in the series, the yangban Confucians held considerable influence during Jungjong's reign; this was a backlash that rendered the king powerless.

King Jungjong in history was a benevolent king. However, he was too mild-tempered and weak for his position, and was thus easily manipulated by scheming officials. As he was more inclined to be a merciful king, he could not bring about stability in the country. However, the people loved him and his policies. In Dae Jang Geum, these facts about him are apparent and are echoed throughout the series. During this period, Korea was also harrassed on two sides by the Japanese and the Jurchens, and Jungjong's weak reign was therefore marked by its instability.

During Jungjong's reign, the Confucian yangban controlled the imperial bureaucracy and manipulated politics. King Jungjong, as mentioned above, was for the most part helpless about the court intrigue, because he wouldn't have become king in the first place without their support. On the other hand, Jungjong was forced to kill his own queen by these powerful officials, and even his queen and many of his concubines were actually their political puppets. This is an important aspect in Dae Jang Geum, because if the concubines and queen happen to give birth to a child, particularly if it's a male prince, it could influence the politics greatly for all players.

Another group of Confucians, known as the Shilin faction to which Jo Gwangjo belonged, tried to get King Jungjong to deal with these yangban, but the plan was foiled and many of them were either exiled or killed. This is an important background event in the series, and is a key point behind the hot spring incident in Dae Jang Geum.

Government and administration:
Translations here may vary significantly from scholarly sources, but this section should explain the basic idea.

A centralized government system based on the Chinese jiupin zhongzheng (nine-rank system) is in use in Dae Jang Geum and during the Joseon Dynasty. Basically, government offices are divided into nine grades, and this simple chart would help explain it: 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 9a, 9b (A and B being Jung and Jong in Korean). Grade 1a is the highest, and grade 9b the lowest. In particular, 3a is also divided into upper-court 3a and lower-court 3a. Officials from 1a to upper-court-3a are called Upper Court Officials, Officials from lower-court 3b to 7a are called Lower Court Officials or Upper Staff Officials. The others are Lower Staff Officials. According to Dae Jang Geum, high palace ladies (sanggung) are at 5a. It was not possible for women to get past that, except for the royalty or consorts of the king.

The system was established in 1469 in the Joseon Dynasty. Whilst the names of various offices might change as time went on, the system as a whole did not deviate too much from its original form throughout the Joseon Dynasty.

Under the king, there was an advising body -- a senate of sorts. The head of the senate would be a figure similar to the Prime Minister. Below him, there were the right and left ministers; all three of them would be at 1a, which was the highest status officials could attain. Further below them were left and right advisors and consultants, each pair at 1b and 2a.

Under the senate, there were six ministries: the census ministry, which conducted censuses and collected taxes; the investiture ministry, which formally conferred titles and decided on the designation of offices; the ceremony ministry, which was in charge of official ceremonies and diplomatic negotiations; the military ministry, which was in charge of defence, appointment of military posts, and allocation of military forces; the manufacturing ministry, which was in charge of government construction; and the judicial ministry, which was responsible for law enforcement, criminal investigations, judicial rulings, as well as jails and work camps. The two ministers overseeing these ministries as a whole were at 2a and 2b.

As for the country, it was historically divided into eight provinces (do). The list goes as follows: Chungchong, Gangwon, Gyeonggi (where Hanseong was located), Gyeongsang, Hamgyong, Hwanghae, Jeolla, and Pyong'an (Pyongyang).

As far as my understanding goes, the Head Lady is in charge of administrative duties in various residences in the palace, whilst the Highest Kitchen Lady is only in charge of the royal palace. At various points in the drama, it is hinted that the Head Lady actually meddles in affairs she is not supposed to involve herself with.

References to Dae Jang Geum in history:
Dae Jang Geum was a real person recorded in the Annals of Joseon Dynasty. It's an important document and is regarded to be a credible source. There are nine references to Dae Jang Geum in King Jungjong's biography, although they are all very short. According to this source, she was the first female royal physician in Korean history, and was trusted and favoured by Jungjong very much. There are few details about her personal life, so the TV drama should be considered fiction.

A medical book also described Dae Jang Geum's research in acupuncture and food therapy. Supposedly, she was exiled to China after the death of King Jungjong but regained her status later with the help of the empress dowager (formerly Jungjong's queen).

References to Dae Jang Geum in history:

Dae Jang Geum was a real person recorded in the Annals of Joseon Dynasty. It's an important document and is regarded to be a credible source. There are nine references to Dae Jang Geum in King Jungjong's biography, although they are all very short. According to this source, she was the first female royal physician in Korean history, and was trusted and favoured by Jungjong very much. There are few details about her personal life, so the TV drama should be considered fiction.

A medical book also described Dae Jang Geum's research in acupuncture and food therapy. Supposedly, she was exiled to China after the death of King Jungjong but regained her status later with the help of the empress dowager (formerly Jungjong's queen).

Jang-geum appears about 10 times in "Chosun Dynasty Chronicles" not as a royal kitchen maid but as a medical woman. Therefore, Most of the royal kitchen story in this TV show was fictionally created by 39-year-old female writer Kim Young-Hyeon and the director Yi Byeong-Hoon

Nobody knows how the real Jang-geum was like. ::)

1. In 1515, King Jung-jong's second wife, Queen Jang-gyeong, died of sequelae caused by her childbirth. Cabinet ministers maintained that royal doctors and medical women related to her death, including Jang-geum, should be punished severely. :-/ However, the king told them "Jang-geum deserves to get a big credit for leading to several safe childbirth of palace ladies, but I have never awarded her for the performance until now because of other affairs. Now you told me to punish her because the queen was dead, but I won't do that as well as I won't reward her. That's enough."

2. In 1524, The chronicles wrote that "Dae(Great) Jang-geum" was better than any other medical women in the palace, so she was permitted to look after the king. :)

It is the first time she was called "Dae(Great) Jang-geum". ;D It can be translated she has got an honor to be the only royal physician in attendance on the king, and she is heading the palace medical group, the nation's top post in this area. :D

3. In 1533, the king said "I recovered my health from several month's sickness. Royal doctors and pharmacist deserve praise. (omission) Jang-geum and Kye-geum, the two medical women, also will be rewarded with 15 rice bags, 15 bean sacks, and 10 cloths respectively."

She is the last person to be named in this list because, unlike the male doctors, medical women have no government position. (They are officially "slaves" who serve the royal family :-/) However, although she belonged to low-class, her excellent performance was duly recognized. :D

4. In January 29th, 1544, The king said "I haven't done my duty for a long time since I caught a cold. A few days ago, I held a seminar, but the cold weather made my condition worse. I already told Bak Se-geo and Hong Chim, the royal doctors, and top medical woman Dae Jang-geum to discuss about the prescription. Let Medical minister know that."

Chosun's kings held academic seminars regularly to debate on politics or philosophy. ;) Medical minister is a nominal leader in charge of the roayl medical department. The persion is an aristocrat without any medical art. ;) By the way, medical women have no right to write out any prescription in principle, however, as the record shows, Jang-geum was an exception. ;)

5. Finally, in February 9th, the king recovered from the cold and gave Jang-geum credit for it. ;D

6. In October 25th, 1544, King Jung-jong is approaching his death. One of his ministers asked Jang-geum how the king was, and she answered, "He slept around midnight yesterday, and has also slept for a short time at dawn. He just passed his urine, but has been constipated for more than 3 days." :-[

7. The next day, the king's health worsen. He told his cabinet members, "I'm still constipated. What prescription should be made is under discussion." (omission) "The female doctor(=Jang-geum) knows all of my condition" Then, Jang-geum explained her prescription for the king's symptoms to the ministers.

Here, for the first time, the king called her "female doctor", not medical woman. (very interesting difference ;)) He shows his confidence in her ability by saying that JG knows his condition better than any other doctors or medical women. ;D

ang galing talaga ni lady han at karapatdapat talaga na sya ang hirangin. lagi nya kasing iniisip ang nakabubuti at gusto ng karamihan o lahat ng nasa palasyo pati mga taga paglingkod.. kaya lalong bumilib sa kanya ang reyna...

haaayyy nakakaawa si lady choi, lagi na lang cya napapahiya.. kasi naman kahit ano gawin nya hindi nya mapapantayan ang husay ni lady han..

I have been lurking here and have been enjoying all your posts. It's all so informative. I was able to finish JITP. For those who have been following the series in gma7 you have a long way to go, there's still a lot in store for the viewers, marami pang pagdadaanan si Jang Geum. Inggit ako kay Jang Geum, I really wish I had someone like Min Jung Ho for me, who's always by her side whatever happens, as he has promised. Makikita mo talaga yung deep love niya for Jang Geum. Bagay na bagay talaga si LYA and JJH, sayang he's married na. I'm sure most of you will love him by the end of the series, he has a very cute and attractive smile. Hope they'll have another project together soon.

yup nabasa ko accidentally yung kay lady han. ang masakit dito, it's the true story of lady jang-geum sho kaya kahit na baligtarin ko ang events nadedepress ako. like yung death ni madam jung, ambigat sa damdamin tapos yung saya ng bawat character, damang-dama ko din. kaya nakakapagod panuorin kc feeling ko kasali ako sa cast. lol. makikita mo talaga kung hanggang saan ang gagawin ng mga sakim para makuha ang power. nakakalungkot kc yung mga may mabuting hangarin ang namamatay o naapi. :( ganyan talaga ang buhay...

napansin ko lang yung colorless nailpolish. panira eh kc wla namang nailpolish nuon. una ko nakita kay JG nung inalagaan nya yung nagalaga sa reyna tapos kay lady choi nung nagluluto sha sa paligsahan tapos kagabi kay lady han at yeong-sang (tama ba spelling? :p). dapat yun consistent sila. well anyway, yung voice ni kenneth sha ding voice ni julius han sa hotelier, danny kim sa a date with tiffany at may isa pa eh, i forgot nga lang.

hi Tin! 19DVD's for P1,000 isn't bad at all. you'll get a clear copy on that price. it's actually a good buy. you'll learn a lot from it...not just cooking. my brother isn't really into watching korean novels but he got hooked up with this because he learned a lot in the medical aspect of the series.
