i got to watch an old tv drama on KBS world kagabi (i think) and Kyun Mi-Ri was there. Yun pala yung "River" na sinasabi nila. I think I've posted several images of her in that drama somewhere in this thread. Anyhow, ang totoong title para nun is "To Where the River Flows" or something like that. I can't really remember kasi medyo aantok-antok na ako nung nakita yung drama tapos patapos na siya. I hope mapanood ko siya ulit next saturday.:D

At the same time, the 30 minute/week animated version of the series also starts airing every Saturday night at 6:30PM through CTV (Channel 82 on Destiny).

Both series require full understanding of Mandarin Chinese to fully appreciate the series.

Cinemanila 2006 films in competition

For those of you who feel there’s nothing to watch at the country’s mushrooming multiplexes, the ongoing Cinemanila 2006 offers perhaps the best alternative to movies in theaters this week.

At least, the nine films in competition for the Grand Prize Lino Brocka Award (think about it as the local Palme D’ Or) should be interesting watch for the duration of the filmfest. These films were chosen from more than 50 films from more than 40 countries. Here’s a brief description of each of the nine films in competition.



1) 9th Company

Director: Fyodor Bondarchuk (Finland-Russia-Ukraine)

The film follows a band of young recruits from a farewell ceremony with friends and family back home, through their often brutal training in Uzbekistan’s Fergana Valley, up to a bloody battle on a mountain top in Afghanistan against the mujahideen.

2) Climate

Director: Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Turkey-France)

A dowdy university instructor Isa is an inattentive husband to his younger TV-business wife Bahar. Self-absorbed and selfish, Isa only communicates in the most rudimentary way while she, similarly, detaches into crying jags and juvenile behavior.

3) Citizen Dog

Director: Wisit Sasanatieng (Thailand)

A colorfully surrealistic story set in contemporary Bangkok, where a boy (Pod) without a goal in life falls in love with a girl (Jin) who lives for her dreams. The movie is frequently compared with the French film Amelie. One of the main themes of the movie is that people will only find something from the moment when they stopped looking for it.

Luc Besson’s Eurocorp picked the film for international release.

4) Everlasting Regret

Director: Stanley Kwan (Hong Kong)

Based on Wang Anyi’s Changhen Ge, the multi-awarded winning novel that was voted the most influential work of the ’90s in China. Everlasting Regret follows a legendary Shanghai beauty from her glamorous days to her simpler life as she struggles to preserve the dignity of her past while surviving the constant betrayal of her men. She stands tall and proud as she bears witness to the waves of changes to her city from 1947 to 1981 until one wave finally overwhelms her. Open Prize-Berlin Film Festival



5) Heremias

Director: Lav Diaz (Philippines)

The story of a gentle human being whose quiet and simple life is changed by circumstances that plunge him into disillusionment, shattering his view of the world and faith in man, and, ultimately, lead him to question the justice, and the existence of God. 6) It’s Only Talk

Director: Ryuichi Hiroki (Japan)

Yuko is a 35-year-old woman—unemployed, single and being treated for manic depression. Single though she may be, she divides her time among a variety of men: Homma, her university classmate, who suffers from impotence; “K” a guy she met on the Web, who is a self-confessed pervert; Noburu, a depressed gang member, and her cousin Soichi, separated from his wife and child and just dumped by his lover. 7) Kubrador

Director: Jeffrey Jeturian (Philippines)

Amy is an aging jueteng kubrador (bet collector) as she goes about her daily business collecting bets, avoiding the police and paying her handler, all the while dealing with events in her personal life, including the recent death of her son. An ordinary meaningless existence can suddenly be changed by the perplexing game of life, luck and death.

8) Sympathy for Lady Vengeance

Director: Park Chan-wook (South Korea)

Lee Geum-Ja, at the age of 19, goes to prison for the murder and abduction of a child on behalf of her accomplice Mr. Baek, only to find out that she is betrayed. While is prison, she carefully prepares for her revenge by winning the hearts of her fellow inmates with her kindness, thus earning herself the nickname ‘kind Ms. Geum-Ja.’ Upon her release from prison after 13 years, she finally sets out to seek revenge on Baek, with the help of her former prison mates.

9) The Wind that Shakes the Barley

Director:Ken Loach (UK-Germany-Italy-France-Spain-Ireland)

Peace is achieved but is short-lived and when England imposes a treaty regarded unfair by a part of the population, war resumes, this time pitting Irishmen against Irishmen, brothers against brothers, Teddy against Damien. Distinguished jury

Christian Jeune, director of the Film Department and deputy artistic delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, is chairman of the Jury in Digital Lokal Competition of the 2006 Cinemanila International Film Festival.

Jeune is responsible for Cannes’ international relations with producers, directors, film festivals and film commissions. He recommends films for competition, Un Certain Regard, Cinefondation, and the Shorts Competition. He has also translated more than 100 English into French.

His involvement in Cinemanila this year is a testament to the increasingly palpable importance given to the country by the international film community in general, and the dynamic digital film revolution in particular—effectively reinventing the landscape of current Philippine cinema and helping it regain its respectability once solidly held in the days of Brocka, Bernal and De Leon.

Last year’s harvest of Digital Lokal films proved to be an enviable crop of critically acclaimed films, many of which are still receiving invitations and citations from various international film festivals; Ala Verde Ala Pobre (Rome Film Festival), Ang Daan Patungong Kalimugtong (Sebastian-Mention) and Tuli (Sundance 2007), to name a few.

The 2006 Cinemanila International Film Festival is ongoing until Nov.15, featuring 75 full-length films from 35 countries, playing under various sections of the festival—World Cinema, Young Cinema, Digital Lokal, Philippine Panorama and Sineng Pambata.

Film fanatic Kim Jong-Il looks forward to summit gifts

North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Il is a big fan of popular South Korean actress Lee Young-Ae and he will receive DVDs of her hit dramas and films as gifts at an upcoming summit, a report said Saturday.

"Chairman Kim likes to watch South Korean TV programmes. Among South Korean entertainers, he favours Lee Young-Ae the most," an unidentified South Korean official was quoted as saying by the JoongAng daily.

"DVDs of South Korean movies and dramas, including those featuring Lee Young-Ae, will be included as summit gifts," the official said.

Lee, 26, has a great fan base in Asia. She starred in Dae Jang Geum, a popular TV drama that played a key role in the advent of the Korean Wave, a surge of South Korean pop culture in the region.

Aside from DVDs, South Korea is mulling a cutting-edge home theatre system and DVD players as gifts for Kim, a movie fanatic, who will hold a summit with South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun in Pyongyang on October 2-4, officials here said.

Kim Jong-Il is said to have a collection of more than 20,000 foreign films in his private library and has reportedly produced several films himself, mostly depicting revolutionary heroes.

His obsession with developing North Korea's film industry was so great that in 1978 he reportedly ordered North Korean agents to abduct a famous South Korean movie director, Shin Sang-Ok, and his ex-wife, actress Che Eun Hui.

The couple stayed in the communist state for eight years while making propaganda films. They escaped in 1986 and wrote a memoir about their saga.

In July, North Korea reportedly ordered the shutdown of karaoke bars, online game rooms, video-screening rooms and Internet cafes as part of a battle to stem a flood of South Korean pop culture.

Defectors say South Korean pop songs and movies are popular in the isolated communist country, despite a steady campaign to weed out what state media has termed "decadent foreign culture and ideals."

Videotapes and CDs of South Korean films, music and TV soap operas enter mainly via neighbouring northeast China.
