jang-geum and master shin arrive at the mother queen's chamber. a grinning choi-sg asks the mother queen what she wishes to do and states jang-geum is the same as dead. the mother queen replies she will accept medical treatment. jang-geum smiles. choi-sg is surprised and distraught. the king and the lady queen are elated. jang-geum, master shin, shin-bi, and yuh-ri begin treatment on the mother queen by examining her first.

elder oh asks choi-sg if the answer she found is incorrect since the mother queen went ahead w/ the treatment. young-roh asks geum-young what she thinks of the situation. shin-bi and jang-geum bring the mother queen's herb stew in. in front of the king, the lady queen, and choi-sg, the mother queen states jang-geum is a bright girl. the king asks what the answer is.

the mother queen replies choi-sg already told her the answer and it's not difficult. the answer is none other than herself. jang-geum explains the self-sacrificing 'shik-ee' is a mother. a mother sweats and toils preparing the right food to keep her family healthy. the mother queen is touched by the answer and she shares a tender moment w/ her son who apologizes to her for not being a good son.

yun-saeng waits for jang-geum outside and runs to her to ask her if everything went well. jang-geum replies things look optimistic. the king passes by and asks yun-saeng who she is. the head guard tells the king she is the yun-saeng sang-goong.

yun-saeng is sad realizing the king forgot about her. the mother queen is vomiting and unable to take in any medicine. master shin explains to the king that since the mother queen's treatment was delayed she may have severe infection inside. the nae-ee-ohn staff meet to decide on the best treatment options. their meeting was interrupted by the news that the mother queen is losing consciousness.

GMA Asianovelas still top ratings



GMA Network's two primetime Asianovelas -- the current No. 1 program in Mega Manila Jewel in the Palace and My Name is Kim Sam Soon -- continue to dominate the ratings game.

Korea's No. 1 dramas for 2004 and 2005 which are also hits in Asia and the US are also taking the Philippines by storm.



It comes as no wonder for more and more viewers are getting hooked to Jang Geum's (Lee Young Ae) compelling and inspiring life story and Kim Sam Soon's (Kim Sun Ah) hilarious antics and wisecracks. So many viewers have also fallen in love with the love story of Jang Geum and Captain Min Jung-Ho (Ji Jin-hee) and the funny budding romance between Kim Sam Soon and her boss Cyrus (Hyun Bin).

There are a lot more events to look forward to in the succeeding episodes of these two unbeatable Koreanovelas.

In Jewel in the Palace, while Jang Geum has succeeded in returning to the palace as a nurse this time, a lot of people continue to doubt her abilities since she is still new to the job.

This is why people found it hard to believe her when she said that there is still an infant in the queen's womb, especially since the more superior and renowned nurse in the palace, Yeul-Yee (Lee Se Eun), thinks otherwise. The two of them observed the queen together to determine who has better skills in healing people.

It did not take long before a dead infant came out of the queen's womb, which proved that Jang Geum was right; the queen did in fact carry twins in her womb. Yeul-Yee apologized to the palace officials, but she angrily accused Jang Geum of humiliating her. On the other hand, the queen would reproach the king for replacing the doctor who happens to be her relative.

This would take the king by surprise, for he doesn't understand what made the queen so angry. What would Jang Geum's fate in the palace be now that she has returned as a nurse?

Would this be her much-awaited chance to have her revenge against the persons responsible for getting her banished from the palace and killing her mother and her mentor Lady Han (Yang Mi-Kyeong)?

Or will her enemies succeed in driving her out of the palace again or taking her life this time? Meanwhile, in My Name is Kim Sam Soon, will Kim Sam Soon finally fall for Cyrus? Just the other night, the two finally bonded over the one thing they had in common: they were both heartbroken. They talked and drank wine all night in the restaurant.

However, they got carried away by their emotions and ended up kissing each other for the first time. This made the situation between them even more awkward at first, until Cyrus finally asked Sam Soon if she is starting to like him.

After another row between the two of them, they apologized to each other and called a truce. They then just considered what happened between them a huge mistake.

Sam Soon, Cyrus, her ex Harvey (Lee Kyu Han), and the latter's fiancé Cherry (Lee Yoon Mi) will later cross paths in Jeju Island.

Cyrus' friends would laugh at him because his girlfriend is already old. Harvey, on the other hand, would continue to bug Sam Soon to get back together with him and even give her a gift, which would make Cyrus furious enough to hit Harvey and begin a fight.

Do Cyrus' actions mean that he is starting to care for Sam Soon? Would this be the beginning of a true romance between the two or is this still part of their deal somehow?

Jewel in the Palace and My Name is Kim Sam Soon really got the viewers hooked, and there would be a lot more reasons to stay glued to these programs in the weeks to come.

GMA Asianovelas still top ratings

GMA Network's two primetime Asianovelas -- the current No. 1 program in Mega Manila Jewel in the Palace and My Name is Kim Sam Soon -- continue to dominate the ratings game.

Korea's No. 1 dramas for 2004 and 2005 which are also hits in Asia and the US are also taking the Philippines by storm.

It comes as no wonder for more and more viewers are getting hooked to Jang Geum's (Lee Young Ae) compelling and inspiring life story and Kim Sam Soon's (Kim Sun Ah) hilarious antics and wisecracks. So many viewers have also fallen in love with the love story of Jang Geum and Captain Min Jung-Ho (Ji Jin-hee) and the funny budding romance between Kim Sam Soon and her boss Cyrus (Hyun Bin).

There are a lot more events to look forward to in the succeeding episodes of these two unbeatable Koreanovelas.

In Jewel in the Palace, while Jang Geum has succeeded in returning to the palace as a nurse this time, a lot of people continue to doubt her abilities since she is still new to the job.

This is why people found it hard to believe her when she said that there is still an infant in the queen's womb, especially since the more superior and renowned nurse in the palace, Yeul-Yee (Lee Se Eun), thinks otherwise. The two of them observed the queen together to determine who has better skills in healing people.

It did not take long before a dead infant came out of the queen's womb, which proved that Jang Geum was right; the queen did in fact carry twins in her womb. Yeul-Yee apologized to the palace officials, but she angrily accused Jang Geum of humiliating her. On the other hand, the queen would reproach the king for replacing the doctor who happens to be her relative.

This would take the king by surprise, for he doesn't understand what made the queen so angry. What would Jang Geum's fate in the palace be now that she has returned as a nurse?

Would this be her much-awaited chance to have her revenge against the persons responsible for getting her banished from the palace and killing her mother and her mentor Lady Han (Yang Mi-Kyeong)?

Or will her enemies succeed in driving her out of the palace again or taking her life this time? Meanwhile, in My Name is Kim Sam Soon, will Kim Sam Soon finally fall for Cyrus? Just the other night, the two finally bonded over the one thing they had in common: they were both heartbroken. They talked and drank wine all night in the restaurant.

However, they got carried away by their emotions and ended up kissing each other for the first time. This made the situation between them even more awkward at first, until Cyrus finally asked Sam Soon if she is starting to like him.

After another row between the two of them, they apologized to each other and called a truce. They then just considered what happened between them a huge mistake.

Sam Soon, Cyrus, her ex Harvey (Lee Kyu Han), and the latter's fiancé Cherry (Lee Yoon Mi) will later cross paths in Jeju Island.

Cyrus' friends would laugh at him because his girlfriend is already old. Harvey, on the other hand, would continue to bug Sam Soon to get back together with him and even give her a gift, which would make Cyrus furious enough to hit Harvey and begin a fight.

Do Cyrus' actions mean that he is starting to care for Sam Soon? Would this be the beginning of a true romance between the two or is this still part of their deal somehow?

Jewel in the Palace and My Name is Kim Sam Soon really got the viewers hooked, and there would be a lot more reasons to stay glued to these programs in the weeks to come.

More Than Kimchi: Korean Dramas Invade Pinoy TV

IF there is one thing that Filipinos and Koreans share, it’s their penchant for romantic comedies and hardcore drama. This is one of the reasons Korean dramas or Koreanovelas—as the local industry calls it—have a big following in the country.

They say we Filipinos are not really hard to please (or in our local term, “mababaw ang kaligayahan”). This is evident in our viewing habits. Remember the time when Pinoy viewers glued their eyes every afternoon to watch Anna Luna, Mara Clara, and their predecessor, Flordeluna, among other soap operas on TV? There were also the Latinovelas or Mexican telenovelas (some networks are still airing these ‘canned programs’ ). While these soaps had successful runs on TV, Filipinos soon grew tired of them.

So what is it about Koreanovelas that really caught the fancy of Pinoy viewers who, at one time, were suckers for local dramas?

The fall of local dramas

There came a time when local drama series shaped the viewing habits of Filipinos. But none of them seemed to have achieved what Koreans managed in terms of acting, storyline, and cinematography. And we’re only talking of made-for-TV dramas here.

For one, local dramas tend to plod along at a very slow pace (remember a soap where it took the lead actress two weeks just to realize that a diary holding the key to the identity of her daughter was on top of her TV set?), aside from creating subplots that are not really needed in the development of the story.

Although the trend has changed over the years—nowadays soaps are axed if they get a beating in the ratings game—their plots seem formulaic. Or maybe the reason earlier soaps were successful is because, during that time, there were no foreign programs to give them a run for their money.

It’s funny how the Korean invasion started. When ABS-CBN aired Meteor Garden starring Asia’s very own Fab Four, all eyes turned to watch the series from Taiwan. Soon other networks followed suit and before we knew it, television was swamped with so-called chinovelas—although some were not as popular.

Then as GMA-7 tested the waters of Korea to fish for notable TV dramas, the tides of TV viewing suddenly changed. Since the first few Koreanovelas like the Endless Love series, which featured Autumn in my Heart and Winter Sonata were aired, Filipinos instantly fell in love—even to the extent of being fanatics. We soon found ourselves referring to these stars by name (Park Shin Yang, Kim Jung Eun and Lee Dong Gun of Lovers in Paris, Rain and Song Hye-gyo of Full House, Ha Ji Won, Jo In Sung and So Ji Soop of Memories of Bali, and Jang Dong Gun and Chae Rim of all About Eve, among others) and trawling the stalls of Quiapo to buy photos and posters, not to mention boxed DVD sets of Stairway to Heaven and Jewel in the Palace.

And while no official word has been released, we’re pretty sure viewership of Arirang, the Korean cable channel, has grown by leaps and bounds (one only has to check the channel’s online forums to verify the Pinoy invasion.)

The secret ingredient

So what makes Koreanovelas so popular among Pinoys? The answer lies in the simple and somewhat realistic stories that these series convey. Most Koreanovelas stick to their storylines: no subplots and nuisance characters.

What the viewers, Filipinos in particular, want is a show that can entertain them—something that will make them laugh, at times cry, gush in excitement, and fall in love all over again. And apparently, Koreanovelas were able to deliver these things to the viewers. Most of their stories can happen to each of us (there are Koreanovelas that are actually inspired by true stories).

Another factor is the way they tell the story: it’s fast paced—you don’t have to wait for years just to know whether the lead characters will be together in the end.

Take for example the case of Winter Sonata, starring Bae Yong Jun and Choi Ji Woo, which touched the hearts of millions across Asia. This Korean TV drama series not only presented a love story, intriguing plot twists, good acting, memorable scenes and lines (not to mention the breathtaking winter scenery backed up by melancholic music tunes), it also presented a mastery of cinematic technique. This is the series that many point to as responsible for hallyu, or Korean wave.

Daejanggeum or Jewel in the Palace, on the other hand, was a big hit in Asia, and was also shown in the US. Based on a true story, Jewel (starring Lee Young-Ae and Ji Jin-Hee) tells the story of a woman who works on the imperial palace to exact revenge for her mother. It also shows the successful rise of a female during those times by becoming the first woman physician in the history of Joseon (former name of Seoul) to serve the king.

Networks are always on the prowl for new and exciting drama series from Korea. Which is why television will never run out of Koreanovelas (viewers are tuned in nightly as the stories of Jewel in the Palace and My Name is Kim Sam Soon unfolds on GMA-7). After all, we’re not the only ones importing these shows. Even our neighbors in Asia are falling in love with Korean stars.

By the looks of it, there’s no stopping the Koreanovela invasion. Who knows? Hollywood might tap into this industry in the future, in the same way it has tapped into Asian horror movies.

Maybe local producers and directors should learn a thing or two from these Korean soaps.

for those who wanted to know if YMK and little JG is confirmed coming here, YES! THEY ARE CONFIRMED COMING HERE. the itinerary of going to Market Market isn't confirmed yet though but they'll surely go there for YMK's cooking demo. Arrival here in the Philippines is on March 22, 2005, departure will be on the 25 of March. di nila sinabi yung time...but i'm sure, yung mga fans nya, nasa airport maghapon! hahahaha!!!

for those who are planning to watch at di mag-exam sa school, i strongly discourage you for that. i'm sure YMK will discourage you as well. it's indeed true, once lang syang magpunta na manila pero pag bagsak ka sa grades mo, mahirap kumabig. you can see her pictures naman in case you really wanted to see her eh. sorry for being straight, but i strongly disagree to prioritize YMK over your studies. thanks.

hey eonni! mayroon bang nagbabalak na umabsent sa class para pagpunta ni ymk? (ako ba yung nagbigay ng statement na yon? haha! :p )

as much as i want to na pumunta don, mukhang malabo rin. nag-set kasi ng mga make-up classes ang mga prof lalo na yung sa major class. gahol na gahol na sa oras. grabe!

sa others, tama si eonni, wag kayong umabsent sa mga exams. mahirap nang mabahiran ang failing grades ang mga TCG at grade cards. :)
