the lil JG (JG o) is very cute di masyadong maganda at first sight (parang si tolits hehe) but talagang carry niya ang role niya, maganda dahil bata pa siya shown na ang pagiging matapang ng loob niya.. can't wait for monday...

Eh kasi naman, talagang magnada ang Koreanovela na into. It was surprising that people from different cultures get to appreciate it as much as they did. But the show’s success is largely due to the powerful acting skills and the unassuming charm of Lee Young-Ae.

As the leading actress of the Asian hit, Jewel in the Palace, Young Ae is certainly the biggest star in this part of the world. She plays the strong willed beauty, Seo Jang Geum. As a girl, she entered the Palace at the age of 10. She placed her heart and soul into cooking. Later on, due to a conspiracy, she was expelled from the royal household. But she redeemed herself by returning to the palace as the first woman physician in the history of the Chuson dynasty to serve the king.

Hindi ito ang usual story ng isang Korean woman! Young Ae had to keep in mind that she is playing a historical figure, not just any film or television character. Let us get to know this mature actress better.

Young Ae does not seem that mature actually because of her perfect skin and sunny disposition but this 34 year old actress knows how to take care of herself and that is why she still looks so young!

Though she first appeared in 1993, it was not until 1995 that she began getting attention for her efforts. In 1996, she made her film debut in the Inch'Allah. Though the film was not well received, her talent still shone through. She recuperated in her next film, the hugely successful, Joint Security Area directed by Park Chan-wook. In that project, Young Ae became a certified star. Thus was the start of her film career which later earned her a Best Actress award from the local Blue Dragon awards.

Despite her success on the silver screen, it will be her small screen role in Jewel in the Palace that will make Young Ae an undisputed Asian celebrity.

For television, Young Ae won several citations as well. These include the KBS TV Awards, Most Popular Actress (1999), SBS TV Awards, Best Actress (1998), MBC TV Awards Best Actress (1996).

The show is very un-Filipino, promoting values that are foreign. The name itself is an oxymoron (A rhetorical figure in which an epigrammatic effect is created by the conjunction of incongruous or contradictory terms). The two opposing halves are "Pinoy" and "Big Brother."

I know it may look out-of-topic but it's good to discuss this one here in the context of comparing one show that promotes positive traits and another that promotes exactly the opposite. Now isn't this statement paradoxical?

nag-orientation na sa palasyo ang mga batang sasanaying maging tagapaglingkod ng hari.

may isa roon sa mga bata ang lumabas na kontrabida. utos sya ng utos sa mga kasama nila sa silid. pa-importante ika nga....isa roon ay pinagdiskitan nga nya dahil may alaga itong pagong. ipinalalabas nya iyon sa silid. pero ibinalik iyon ni jan geum.

so may bestfriend na si jang hehe....

lumaon, isang gabi, si jang na ang kinalaban ng babaeng maldita dahil nalaman nito na hindi galing sa maykayang angkan si jang geum. pinalabas nito sa silid si jang.

umiyak si jang... hindi nya magawang ibida uli sa mga kasama nya na dating kapitan sa palasyo ang kanyang ama habang naging tagapaglingkod din ng hari ang kanyang ina...dahil nga sa masamang sinapit nilang mag-anak di ba?

pero, nahimasmasan din si jang at biglang naisip na puntahan na lang ang kusina ng palasyo. naalala nya iyon dahil iyon ang sabi sa kanya ng kanyang ina regarding doon sa mga best recipe nya raw para sa hari noon.

sa paglalakad-lakad nya sa palasyo, nakita nya yung bestfriend nya. nagpasama na rin sya doon.

may na-meet pa sila na isa nilang kasama...pero di na gaanong importante to narrate kasi iba yung pakay nya...although, nagkaroon ng time na muntik silang mahuling tatlo ng mga nakatatanda sa palasyo....syempre bata, dapat nasa loob na sila ng silid.

nagtago....ganun....


anyway, dumiretso na ang magbestfriend, silang dalawa lang, sa kusina. bumalik na kasi sa silid yung isa.

hinanap na ni jang yung recipes kuno until tumulong yung isa but unluckily, nahulog ito sa tinutungtungang upuan. natapon ang mga sangkap para sa paggawa ng lugaw na isisilbi that night. nahuli sila ng lady han at ng isa nitong alalay.

pero, sa halip na komprontahin sina jang ay gumawa muna ng paraan ang mga ito para makaisip ng alternatibong hapunan para sa hari.

luya at something like na talbos yata yun ang natitirang available ng oras na iyon para maisipan mo iyon ng putahe/luto.

nakapagluto sila ng putahe galing doon sa luya. kabado pero ipinirisinta pa rin nina lady han ang kanilang luto sa hari....pero ayaw pala ng hari sa luya....

buti na lang at tinikman pa rin iyon ng hari. natuwa naman ito sa sarap ng luto.

nakahinga nang maluwag si lady han. at muling nagtungo sa kusina para komprontahin sina jang geum.

pero cute din yun bata...naaliw ako dun sa scene n ayaw nyang bantayan un isang batang mamamaalam...:D

Last night on Jewel in the Palace:

Another important episode was shown last night.

The man who had kept Jang Geum for two years had been in service to Lady Han to search for her best friend, Lady Park's daughter. He said he still saw no trace of her but at the same time requested Lady Han to look after Jang Geum.

To help out her sick friend, Jang Geum stayed with her even if it meant being punished not to attend her usual classes. But because it was her mother's death wish that Jang Geum serve in the palace, she would do anything to make herself worthy. Even to shame herself carryng a basin of water overnight.

Jang Geum was almost prohibited from taking the certification exam to make her serve in the palace because she disappeared to help out a sick friend. But as she made a deal with her teacher, she did her share to take the examination. But it seemed as if luck was not part. On the day of the examination facilitated by Lady Choi and Lady Han, a fellow classmate spilled the water that Jang Geum carried but her best friends Yeon-Sheng and Geum Yeung helped out saying that if she was not teased the water wouldn't spill at all.

Lady Han inquired of the teacher how long she has held on to the basin of water only to be surprised to find out that she has been holding it for an entire night.

Government and administration:
Translations here may vary significantly from scholarly sources, but this section should explain the basic idea.

A centralized government system based on the Chinese jiupin zhongzheng (nine-rank system) is in use in Dae Jang Geum and during the Joseon Dynasty. Basically, government offices are divided into nine grades, and this simple chart would help explain it: 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 9a, 9b (A and B being Jung and Jong in Korean). Grade 1a is the highest, and grade 9b the lowest. In particular, 3a is also divided into upper-court 3a and lower-court 3a. Officials from 1a to upper-court-3a are called Upper Court Officials, Officials from lower-court 3b to 7a are called Lower Court Officials or Upper Staff Officials. The others are Lower Staff Officials. According to Dae Jang Geum, high palace ladies (sanggung) are at 5a. It was not possible for women to get past that, except for the royalty or consorts of the king.

The system was established in 1469 in the Joseon Dynasty. Whilst the names of various offices might change as time went on, the system as a whole did not deviate too much from its original form throughout the Joseon Dynasty.

Under the king, there was an advising body -- a senate of sorts. The head of the senate would be a figure similar to the Prime Minister. Below him, there were the right and left ministers; all three of them would be at 1a, which was the highest status officials could attain. Further below them were left and right advisors and consultants, each pair at 1b and 2a.

Under the senate, there were six ministries: the census ministry, which conducted censuses and collected taxes; the investiture ministry, which formally conferred titles and decided on the designation of offices; the ceremony ministry, which was in charge of official ceremonies and diplomatic negotiations; the military ministry, which was in charge of defence, appointment of military posts, and allocation of military forces; the manufacturing ministry, which was in charge of government construction; and the judicial ministry, which was responsible for law enforcement, criminal investigations, judicial rulings, as well as jails and work camps. The two ministers overseeing these ministries as a whole were at 2a and 2b.

As for the country, it was historically divided into eight provinces (do). The list goes as follows: Chungchong, Gangwon, Gyeonggi (where Hanseong was located), Gyeongsang, Hamgyong, Hwanghae, Jeolla, and Pyong'an (Pyongyang).

As far as my understanding goes, the Head Lady is in charge of administrative duties in various residences in the palace, whilst the Highest Kitchen Lady is only in charge of the royal palace. At various points in the drama, it is hinted that the Head Lady actually meddles in affairs she is not supposed to involve herself with.

Dae Jang Geum -- background information

Dae Jang Geum is set in the late 1400's and early 1500's. It takes place in Korea during the Joseon (Chosun) Dynasty. The story takes place around the capital city of Hanyang (Seoul) and also for some time the Cheju Island. I'll try to gather some historical information alluded to in the drama, although I don't claim this is accurate information, and instead of dismissing this page outright for its errors, try to leave constructive feedback instead. Translations are approximate and may not conform to any standards.

This post is only occasionally updated, but check back if you want. Last update at 10PM PST on August 25, 2005. There are spoilers in this post.

Hanseong/Hanyang:

Hanyang was the name for modern-day Seoul. It was also called Hanseong after the Joseon Dynasty took over. The name Seoul was a much older historical name for the city, and was reinstated after the end of the Japanese colonial period. The drama sometimes speaks of tigers, a reference to Siberian tigers that have long since disappeared from Korea but still lingered in tales. The Han River runs through Seoul, and that's where the historical names came from.

The name of Seoul remains in dispute even today. Whilst Seoul has been called exactly that for a century already, the Chinese continued to refer to it as "Hancheng" (Hanseong), which was a name with Chinese connotations. In addition, Hanseong literally means Han City, and may be interpreted wrongly by nationalists; Han being synonymous with China, Han City can be wrongly interpreted as "Chinese city" or "city that was once Chinese territory" or "city of a people that were once Chinese subjects" (c.f. the English word "niggardly").

The controversy escalated as the mayor of Seoul changed the official Chinese name of Seoul to "Shou'er". However, many Chinese continue to say "Hancheng" for various reasons (c.f. St Petersburg and Leningrad). One reason is that "Shou'er" sounds ugly and un-Chinese to some people, and other reasons revolve around tradition, habit, clarity, politics, nationalism, and so on.

Monarchs and Politics:

Two monarchs that reigned during this period were Yeonsang-gun (1476-1494, reign 1494-1506) and later King Jungjong (1488-1544, reign 1506-1544), who was Yeonsang-gun's half-brother.

Yeonsang-gun was overthrown in 1506 and replaced by King Jungjong. He was exiled and died a deposed king. Yeonsang-gun's rule was noted for its suppression of the Confucian intellectuals. He challenged the system and persecuted Confucians, but failed and was succeeded by King Jungjong who was put in place by Confucian supporters. Yeonsang-gun was thus seen by many as a tyrant, perhaps the worst tyrant ever in Korean history; Yeonsang-gun died on Ganghwa Island, to which he was exiled, a few months later. As you will see in the series, the yangban Confucians held considerable influence during Jungjong's reign; this was a backlash that rendered the king powerless.

King Jungjong in history was a benevolent king. However, he was too mild-tempered and weak for his position, and was thus easily manipulated by scheming officials. As he was more inclined to be a merciful king, he could not bring about stability in the country. However, the people loved him and his policies. In Dae Jang Geum, these facts about him are apparent and are echoed throughout the series. During this period, Korea was also harrassed on two sides by the Japanese and the Jurchens, and Jungjong's weak reign was therefore marked by its instability.

During Jungjong's reign, the Confucian yangban controlled the imperial bureaucracy and manipulated politics. King Jungjong, as mentioned above, was for the most part helpless about the court intrigue, because he wouldn't have become king in the first place without their support. On the other hand, Jungjong was forced to kill his own queen by these powerful officials, and even his queen and many of his concubines were actually their political puppets. This is an important aspect in Dae Jang Geum, because if the concubines and queen happen to give birth to a child, particularly if it's a male prince, it could influence the politics greatly for all players.

Another group of Confucians, known as the Shilin faction to which Jo Gwangjo belonged, tried to get King Jungjong to deal with these yangban, but the plan was foiled and many of them were either exiled or killed. This is an important background event in the series, and is a key point behind the hot spring incident in Dae Jang Geum.

The conflict between the two parties of Confucians is very significant in Korean history, so I will explain it a bit. One party is the group that was historically responsible for King Sejong the Great's ascension to the throne, and the descendants had thus been given tremendous power based on their meritorious services to the throne; I'll call them the Meritocrats. Many of them were yangban and landlords. The Shilin faction, on the other hand, were opposed to this group. During Jungjong's reign, Jo Gwangjo dominated the Shilin faction and tried to start radical reform. He failed, resulting in the 1519 Incident, where the Shilin faction suffered a tremendous setback. Many were killed, imprisoned, or exiled, including Jo himself. In 1521, an aftershock occured again, and even more Shilin scholars were purged.

King Sejong:

There are constant references in the drama to a King Sejong (Sejong Daewang) in the past. Sejong the Great was the fourth ruler of the Joseon Dynasty, and invented the Korean alphabet (Hangul). Prior to that, people used to write completely using Chinese characters (Hanja), and that is not really intuitive as Korean as a language is grammatically different from Chinese. Sejong's invention led to a definite increase in literacy, but the conservative Confucian intellectuals objected to this new script. Thus, in Dae Jang Geum, you will see that official documents are still written in Chinese, whilst personal letters are composed in Hangul, mostly by females.

Hangul and Hanja:

Hangul is the native Korean alphabet, whilst the Hanja are the equivalent of the Japanese Kanji and the Chinese Hanzi. They are Chinese characters, and during those days Hanja were written in Classical Chinese, which was the literary written language of China. Note that Classical Chinese was purely a written language, and was thus quite archaic. When it was read out loud, it was done in local dialects. Its status is much like Ecclesiastical Latin, which was a language artificially "frozen in time" by the Catholic church, and read out loud with local pronunciations and accents.

In Dae Jang Geum, as in history, most documents are still written in Hanja. The three characters given to Suh by the monk in episode one were Chinese characters. The imperial decrees are written in Hanja. The words the palace girls are studying are Chinese characters. Public bulletins are written in Hanja, for example the wanted posters early on in the series. Hangul was not a prestigious form of writing. Only in the 20th century did Hangul replace Hanja.

Random other facts about the Hangul script: the legend goes that the whole thing came to King Sejong in a dream, but probably he was just a very clever guy, and he managed to make a very clever script. It really is one of the easiest alphabets to learn. It was introduced, and then the aformentioned confucian intellectuals got a bit afraid of what would happen if people became literate, so it was discouraged if not banned. Besides, it was too easy to use, it was writing for women and children and stupid people. Real Men used characters, the more complex the better. This persisted until the early 1900's when Japan won Korea in the Ruso-Japanese war, and occupied it. It was certainly not a happy time for Korea, and is a source of lingering resentment against the Japanese, but they did re-introduce the use of Hangul. Their version was similar to the way Japanese is written, and had the main nouns and verbs and such as characters, and the grammar-syllables like suffixes and particles in Hangul. After the Japanese left, they switched to using Hangul almost exclusively, so characters are now rarely seen, and are more of a historical thing.

The random side-note to this random side-note is that if the Russians hadn't been incompetent and lost the Ruso-Japanese war, then Korea might well have been a Russian territory instead of a Japanese on, and instead of Hangul, korean would be written in cyrillic, which is a pretty weird concept. Note that historians tend to agree that King Sejong probably did not invent the script all by himself, but most likely with a committee.

In episode five, Gang Duk-Gu makes a reference to a King Gul (King Jie in Chinese) from China.

King Jie is generally considered a great tyrant. He was the last king of the legendary Xia Dynasty, and was overthrown by Tang, who founded the Shang Dynasty (1600 BC).

The idea that he only ate the right front paws of bears is probably to show his extravagance.

On afternoon of 8th October during the Pusan Film Festival, Lee Young Ae, the lead actress of Jewel in the Palace Korean drama, for the first time revealed to the media that although a China company has bought the copyright of Jewel in the Palace II, but she will not acted in Jewel in the Palace II drama.

She expressed gratitude towards the lovers of the Dae Jang Geum drama, which to her surprise, has huge followings in Chinese language speaking countries. However, Ji Jin Hee, herself and other casts will not acting again in the sequel to the Dae Jang Geum drama.

Previously there was news that Jewel in the Palace II is confirmed to start filming with new lead actress. According Miss To from Jewel in the Palace production company MBC Television’s Shanghai office, Jewel in the Palace II is an idea of a TV production company in Korea, which plans to invite original casts from Dae Jang Geum to act in the new drama, but the storyline and characters will be different. Meanwhile, lead actor Ji Jin Hee had already expressed in front of the media that he has no intention to act in the sequel.

The broadcast of Jewel in the Place in China is coming to end soon, and a lot of drama lovers still can’t get enough of it, and hope that the story of Jang Geum and Sir Min will continue; Jang Geum and Min Jung Ho left the palace to become normal peasant, the open-ended type of their life as peasants leaves a lot of imagination to the viewers for a sequel. But a lot of viewers said that Jewel in the Palace is the product of 5-years hard works by the producers, so if now hastily starts filming of a sequel for short term benefits, it will surely hurts the original Dae Jang Geum. So it’s best not to have a sequel.

Hello everyone, this must be the last time I will greet you as Jang-Geum. I guess I was deeply absorbed in Jang-Geum too. Sorry about my belated message.

Looks like the time has finally arrived to let go of Jang-Geum, whose life I have lived with all my heart for so long. It’s too difficult for me to leave her behind alone. Even though we may forget Jang-Geum as time goes on, she will continue to go her way as she has so far.

I would like to thank Jang-Geum, who had been buried in history for hundreds of years and came back to awaken me to many valuable truths, as well as all Dae Jang Geum viewers, from our children who saw Dae Jang Geum through with Jang-Geum-like curiosity, to our loving grandmothers and grandfathers.

I’m also deeply grateful to all Dae Jang Geum staffs, including Lee Byeong-Hoon the producer, Kim Young-Hyeon the scriptwriter, and the rest of the staffs and fellow actors. Looking back, it was tough yet enjoyable time.

South Korean star Lee Young-ae, heroine of the TV drama “Dae Jang Geum,” and screen heartthrob Bae Yong-joon have been lined up for CCTV’s 2006 Spring Festival gala. Lang Kun, general director of the CCTV 2006 Spring Festival party, made the announcement yesterday in Beijing.

Lee rocketed to popularity in China for her role as Jang Geum in “Dae Jang Geum.” The 70-episode series topped the rating nationally, even though it was aired at the late hour of 10 p.m., according to Cvsc-Sofres Media, a Sino-French media research firm. The series ended a few weeks ago.

The actress will star in the 24-episode Hong Kong TV drama “Three Years and Eight Months.” The TV series about the war of resistance against Japanese aggression from 1937 to 1945 will start shooting this month.

Lee will appear in eight episodes as a Korean painter who flees from Korea to Hong Kong.

In episode 49, when Shin Pi was searching for books in the library, she wore high heel shoes.

Most Frequent: Cooking Hand

In Jewel in the Palace that features lots of cuisine, because of actresses are not possible to be an expect in cooking, that’s why whenever shooting the scene of high difficulty like fast cutting vegetables, the gentle hands of palace women are replaced with pairs of hands which are fat and red.

Most Unbelievable: Handyplast

When Jang Geum is treating the critically ill nurse mail of Queen’s mother, her left hand is been pasted with handyplast.

The Finest: Dae Jang Geum’s Daughter

In episode 6 during the competition to put on the pine, the small palace woman that sits between Jang Geum and Yeong Shen - first row, second from left, 4th from right - eventually appears as daughter of Dae Jang Geum and Min Jung Ho.

Error 1: Feast of Complete Manchu-Han Courses

As mentioned here (http://daejanggeum.blogsome.com/2005/06/22/feast-of-complete-manchu-han-courses/), Dae Jang Geum appeared during Ming Dynasty of China, in the Jewel in the Palace drama, Court Lady Choi even several times said that “Let us prepare Feast of Complete Manchu Han Courses, after eating several days of light food, sure will like delicious Feast of Complete Manchu Han Courses.” Feast of Complete Manchu Han Courses are created by Qing Dynasty (after Ming Dynasty) to unite relationship of Manchu and Han.

Error 2: Ming Dynasty Messenger Wore Yellow Suit

Ming Dynasty Taizu had stipulated that yellow is the royal colour. Any other people, except from the royal family, are not allowed to use yellow colour in any place any time. But in the drama, the messenger wore yellow, and he will be killed if saw by the emperor.

Error 3: Jang Geum became Medicine Woman in Year 1487 or 1547, Both Impossible Year.
During the scene of releasing the result of medicine women selection, there is a scene that date is shown, which translated into it’s year 1487 or 1547. According to history, King Jungjong was borned on 5th March 1488 and passed away on 15th November 1544, just between the year 1487 and 1547. So it’s impossible for Jang Geum to be selected as medicine woman in either year 1487 or 1547 as in the drama, King Jungjong is still alive.

　　湖南卫视播出韩剧《大长今》后，在中国内地掀起一股“长今热”，连新华社都撰文称其热得有理。随着剧集的播出接近尾声，与起初的狂热赞美不同，观众也冷静地挑剔起来：情节拖沓，好多镜头出现穿帮，衔接不缜密……综合了观众和网友的意见后，找出了一些《大长今》的“毛病”。

　　可笑之最：医女穿高跟鞋

　　在第49集中，医女信非到书库找书，脚上竟穿着时下流行的高跟鞋，这应该是《大长今》穿帮镜头中最让人捧腹的了。看来医女们也得顾及形象，太矮了上镜不好看。

　　频繁之最：做菜的手

　　在主打美食的《大长今》中，因为演员不可能都是做菜行家，所以像拍快速切菜等高难度动作时，宫女们的纤纤玉手都不见了，取而代之的则是一双双又红又肿的胖手。

　　荒谬之最：创可贴

　　长今给病危的皇后娘娘的保姆尚宫今夏米看病时，她的左手手指上竟贴着创可贴，实在太马虎了。

　　精细之最：长今的女儿

　　要找出这个穿帮镜头，肯定得有好记性。在第6集比赛穿松子时，在长今跟连生中间的那个小宫女，也就是第一排从左边数第2个、从右边数第4个，后来却成了长今和闵政浩的女儿。

　　错误一：呈上满汉全席

　　长今所处的历史时期是我国的明朝，剧中崔尚宫却给使节呈上满汉全席，还不止一次说道：“我们就准备满汉全席吧，吃了几天清淡的食物，一定会很喜欢美味的满汉全席。”满汉全席是清朝为团结满汉关系创立的。

　　错误二：明朝使者穿黄袍

　　明太祖时就规定，一切黄色都是御用色，皇族以外的任何人，在任何场合、任何东西上都不能使用。但是剧中明朝使者居然身穿黄色官服，要让皇帝看见了肯定得株连九族。

　　错误三：丁未年考上医女

　　长今考医女在宫廷门口看放榜这场戏中，有个特写镜头让我们可以看清楚旁边的年月日：丁未年二月十二日。朝鲜古代所使用的干支纪年和中国是完全一样的，即每60年一个甲子，和长今最近的丁未年分别是1487年和1547年。而根据记载，朝鲜中宗的生卒时间是1488年3月5日至1544年11月15日，刚好在两个丁未年之间。换句话说，长今绝不可能在丁未年考上医女。

Enjoyed 대장금 (Dae Jang-Geum: Jewel in The Palace)? The incredibly popular historical drama Jewel in the Palace will launch again as an animation.

The animation series, entitled 장금이의 꿈 (Jang-Geum’s Dream), took two years to produce and cost 3 Billion Won. The story of the poor girl who made it to the royal palace as a cook and doctor will be adapted into twenty-six 30 Minutes long episodes.

The theme of the animation is roughly the same with Jewel in the Palace drama, and most of the same characters of the TV Drama will appear, but most of the story will cover other aspects of Jang-Geum’s life, which didn’t show in the TV drama.

韩国月底推出《大长今》动画版 讲述电视剧里没有的故事　

　　以超过50%创下韩国去年收视率冠军，随后在我国香港上演，同样创下超过50%收视率，目前正在我国湖南卫视台热播的韩国长篇古装连续剧《大长今》，即将推出动画版！

　　动画版《大长今》现已定名为《长今的梦》，总长共26集每集30分钟。该动画和电视剧设定大致相同，主人公长今入宫以后遇到一个又一个的难题，然后长今利用自己的智慧以及周围人的帮助，一个个解决掉。动画的剧情会出现不少电视剧里所没有的内容，但出场人物和电视剧是一样的。　

　　创作这部动画的韩国孙悟空制片公司市场部负责人表示，他们已计划在不久的将来推出动画版《大长今》的同时，还会推出各种相关的音乐CD、DVD和玩具等等周边商品。

　　据悉，动画版《大长今》由韩国MBC电视台和孙悟空共同投资制作，预定从本月底开始在MBC电视台播出。

In Jewel in the Palace that features lots of cuisine, because of actresses are not possible to be an expect in cooking, that’s why whenever shooting the scene of high difficulty like fast cutting vegetables, the gentle hands of palace women are replaced with pairs of hands which are fat and red.

A Noble Man on and off Screen

Across the country, Koreans are glued to their TV sets on Monday and Tuesday evenings at 10 to watch the ratings-sweeping MBC program, “Dae Jang Geum.” Set in the 16th century, the drama is based on the true story of Jang Geum, Korea’s first female physician to the king, starring Lee Young-ae as the main character Jang Geum and Ji Jin-hee as her handsome love interest, Min Jeong-ho.

“I prefer to wear my hair short, but for the purpose of this drama, I’ve let it grow out a lot,” said Ji as he posed with a boyish shag for the camera. In character, he wears his hair tied in a topknot, covered by a hat typical of noble men during Joseon times.

Viewers apparently cannot get enough of Jang Geum’s adventures, beginning as a royal cook, then training as a royal physician. The writers have meticulously included ancient herbal remedies, acupuncture treatments and cuisine of the royal court, capturing the nostalgic attention of the Korean audiences - still boasting the highest TV ratings ever since it began late last year.

Ji is redefining sex appeal of the Joseon dynasty men with his dignified good looks. His character is an official in the royal court who falls in love with Jang Geum and remains on her side through all the crises that entangle them both.

“I feel that I know my character very well, so I am comfortable in my performances. The drama is also easy to follow. I am impressed and satisfied with the acting of Lee Young-ae and others involved in this project,” Ji commented.

The drama has gained such a strong following that hat the community board for the program on www.imbc.com is flooded with words of encouragement for the actors and messages addressed to the fictional characters, themselves.

“Our writers are under much stress because there is so little time to prepare scripts. Viewers make requests to save a character’s life, or to change the plot somehow, so the story is changing as we go along with production. I prefer one set storyline from start to finish, like a film,” Ji said.

Production of “Dae Jang Geum” is scheduled to end by March with a tragic ending based on Jang Geum’s true-life story. A DVD for the first season is already on the shelves and the English subtitled version is also on release.

Ji, 31, caught his first acting bug when he was 12, in a school play. He struggled early in his career, an experience that Ji has since embraced.

“I started working for 200,000 won per job, which makes me appreciate the work that I do now. Many new young stars shine bright, then suddenly burnout. I learned how to work hard, have hope, and stand up after each fall,” Ji said.

Acting isn’t the only pursuit of this Korean heartthrob - photography, graphic design and charity work are other areas where Ji would like to excel.

Ji was never attracted to the spotlight of the entertainment industry, instead working behind the scenes as a photographer and layout designer. In 1998, Ji was shooting the Maxwell House canned coffee campaign, featuring Hong Kong-based actor, Takeshi Kaneshiro (Geum Seong-mu). Curiously, Ji strongly resembled the actor, and when Kaneshiro had to leave the shoot prematurely to go to Hong Kong, Ji simply stood in for him, unexpectedly opening doors for him. Siddus, a big player of talent management, requested Ji to start an acting career because of his charismatic good looks - Ji refused their proposals until the Asian economic crisis forced him to reconsider.

“I can’t say if I will act for the rest of my life, though I could easily do it with great satisfaction. I never set out to become an actor - it was my destiny. In the long term future, I wish to do more photography, charity work and designing, though I cannot predict which will become my full time occupation,” said Ji.

Contrary to his cool image, Ji is a warm hearted, talkative and opinionated fellow. Marriage is a popular question for Ji, as one of Korea’s most eligible bachelors. Unfortunately, for most women, Ji is in relationship - but he won’t tie the knot until he feels confident about commitment.

There are two types of palace food: regular food that people eat daily and banquet for special occasions such as celebrations, ceremonies, and treats for guests. Meals served to the king is called “Soo Ra” and the presentation of the food on a table is called Soo Ra Sang.

On Soo Ra Sang, 12 different side dishes cooked in different cooking methods are served. These are a cooked vegetable dish, a fresh vegetable dish, a cold baked dish, stew, preserved food, dry side dish, fermented fish sauce, Jeon Yoo Hwa, poached eggs, raw fish and hot baked dish. In addition to these 12 side dishes, two different types of steamed rice(regular white rice and the one with red beans), three kinds of kimchi(Jutgookji, Songsongee, watery kimchi), two kinds of Jochi(soup:Tojang Jochi and Jutgook Jochi), three kinds of paste-type sauces(soy bean sauce, Chojang, Chogochoojang(sour red pepper paste)), and a steamed dish. In addition to the 12-kind Soo Ra Sang, the drama Dae Jang Geum introduces diverse kinds of palace food, which people have seen rarely and various traditional liquors including Doo Gyeon Joo, Do Hwa Joo and Gook Hwa Joo(made of chrysanthemum).
