The TV miniseries Daejanggeum, or Jewel in the Palace, which aired on MBC from September 15, 2003 to March 23, 2004, set many new records. The miniseries, whose viewer rate averaged 47%, and even reached a high of 57.8%, is based on the story of a real historical figure (Jang-geum) who was the first and only woman to serve as head physician to the King in the rigidly hierarchical and male-dominated social structure of the Joseon Dynasty.
Daejanggeum, in English, “the Great Jang-geum,” caught the attention of Korean TV viewers with its unique combination of two themes: the successful rise of a female, which is rarely covered in historical genre, and the elements of traditional food and medicine. For three months, beginning in May 2004, Daejanggeum aired in Taiwan, overtaking other Taiwanese miniseries, and snatching the title of most viewed program of the season. In fact, nowadays, visiting Taiwanese fans flock to the main filming locations on Jeju-do Island, the Korean Folk Village, Naganeupseong, Suwon Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, and Changdeokgung Palace.
The series was also launched on NHK satellite TV beginning October 8, 2004. In spring 2004, Daejanggeum also gained popularity in the West when the drama aired in 60 episodes on WOCH-Ch in Chicago, drawing large numbers of Daejanggeum aficionados.
These days, the main filming locations in Jeju-do Island, Korean Folk Village, Naganeupseong, Suwon Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, and Changdeokgung Palace are crowded with Taiwanese fans.

Synopsis

Jang-geum (played by Lee Young-ae) is the daughter of Seo Cheon-su (played by Park
Chan-hwan), a former judicial officer-turned butcher (the lowest social class) who lives in hiding after being expelled from the royal palace, and Madame Park (played by Kim Hye-seon), a former court lady working in the royal kitchen who narrowly escaped death following a murderous conspiracy planned by Court Lady Choi. As a young child, Jang-geum loses both parents and enters the royal palace in the kitchen. In the royal kitchen, she spends a harsh childhood in continuous competition with Choi Geum-yeong (played by Hong Li-na). Under the protection and tutelage of Court Lady Han, Jang-geum makes every effort to become the best cook in the palace. Her endeavors enable her to become a recognized cook; but Lady Choi and her faction, jealous of the success of Lady Han and Jang-geum, plot a conspiracy, which leads to the death of Lady Han and Jang-geum’s expulsion from the royal palace. Jang-geum is relegated to the position of maidservant for the local government office on Jeju-do Island. While in exile, Jang-geum learns medicine. Through native intelligence and patient efforts, she earns her reputation as a woman doctor on the island. However, she is entrapped in a conspiracy aimed at her mentor Lady Han, and she is expelled from the palace. She is forced to work as a maidservant for the local government in Jeju Island. There, she studies medicine and re-enters the palace, ultimately becoming the head physician and also the first woman physician in the history of Joseon to serve the king.

Min Jung-ho becomes closely bound to Jang-geum after his appointment as a Royal Guards officer. He is an outstanding scholar who not only passes the civil service examination but also possesses great talent as a military officer, which leads to a position at the Royal Guards. Deeply touched by Jang-geum’s wisdom and passion for learning, he helps her in many ways. At the same time, he falls in love with her, but his love also puts him in deep trouble.

Changdeokgung Palace

Changdeokgung Palace has been designated by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site. It appeared in episode 1 depicting the procession of King Yeonsangun, episode 3 depicting the procession of King Jungjong, episode 51 where King Jungjong is prevented from entering the residence of his son Gyeongwondaegun, and episodes 51 and 52 in which King Jungjong walks and talks with Jang-geum.

Korean Folk Village

The Korean Folk Village was the location of episode 54, in which Jang-geum gives birth to Min Jung-ho’s child, and Jang-geum, Min Jung-ho and the baby become a family. Jeju Folk Village
Many of the scenes in which Jang-geum learns medicine as a maidservant for the Jeju local government from episodes 27 to 32 were filmed at the Jeju Folk Village. Jeju Jinjigul Cave
In episode 54, Jang-geum finds a woman in labor inside the cave. She performs an operation that saves both the woman and her child. Jinjigul Cave is actually man-made. Aiming to use Jeju-do Island as an advance base to protect its mainland, the Japanese military excavated Jinjigul Cave in early 1945. An exhibition showing military equipment and everyday articles used by the Japanese military is recently being opened in the cave, and it is becoming a popular tourist attraction..

Seongeup-ri Ranch Area in Namjeju-gun (ATV Jeju Joy)
Many of the scenes were filmed on an open range located in Seongeup-ri, Pyoseong-myeon, Namjeju-gun. Filmed here were scenes of Jang-geum carrying the dying Courtier Han on her back and later burying her. This is also where Jang-geum is taken by a military guard to a place of exile on the island. Other scenes shot here were Jang-geum going back to search for Lady Han’s grave, and erecting the tombstone. Visitors can still see the tombstone by registering for the Daejanggeum tour operated by ATV Jeju Joy. A thrilling experience awaits tour-goers, who will visit the filming locations in an all terrain four-wheeled vehicle.

This location, a butcher’s village, appeared in episode 1, in which Jang-geum’s father Seo Cheon-su and other officials deliver poison (given them by the king) to deposed Queen Yun. Images of the Royal Guards training grounds and Joseon-era marketplace scenes were also filmed here. Episode 39, in which a contagious disease ravages the village, and episode 40, in which Min Jung-ho visits a disease-ridden village to save Jang-geum, were also filmed here.

Seonunsa Temple

Well known for its beauty, Seonunsa Temple provided the location for episode 2. Filmed at Jinheunggul Cave near Seonunsa Temple, it shows Janggeum’s mother, Madame Park, alone in a cave absorbed in thought. The scene in which Jang-geum hides from a military search party, in a rock crevice was filmed at Dosoram Hermitage. The scene in episode 6 where Jang-geum climbs down the mountain carrying a golden pheasant was filmed near the temple. The scenes at the stone tomb of Madame Park in episodes 23, 27, 28 were all shot nearby. Finally, in episode 48, Lady Choi asks for forgiveness at Madame Park’s tomb.

I know this has one of the highest ratings in Korea ever and they even have a Tour in Korea to visit the sets for the series (just like Full House) which is very popular with Asian tourists (esp HK & Taiwan).

I would rank this as the best Korean series that I have watched till date (and I've watched a lot)..it has the perfect blend of romance, action, culture and drama.

Also Ji Jin Hee is so cute here. He's like the knight in shining armour. And I'm so happy coz he's not only the lead here but he gets the girl in the end.

But you're right, don't know if the Filipino audience can appreciate the costumes (coz harder to relate seeing people wearing traditional Korean costume for the entire series) and so many twists and turns.


GMA has always been pretty good with their translations...hope they do a good job here coz this really is a series worth watching...even if it is very long.

newbie ako sa thread na to.i'm in sgpore ryt now and napapanood ko ang show nato....it's really good...ang cute nung young Jang-Geum...originally akala ko hindi sya interesting since akala ko it's just about food and medicine ang show...pero i was wrong...i just hope when it airs dyan sa pinas maganda ang dubbing and translation kc very detailed un descriptions about food tska mga facts tungkol sa royal palace...hopefully filipinos find this show good..:)

I've seen the first volume of this series... and i'd say it's really good!!! the story is really amazing!!! ÜÜÜ It may be confusing at first because they all look alike, but you'll get used to it! You'll even go beyond the costumes and the ancient setting ÜÜÜ

May complete DVD set na ng Jewel in the Palace sa Quiapo Ü 19 dvds, including the Special. All in all, 70 eps with more or less 40 minutes each episode.

I really like this series - very heartwarming and liberating ÜÜÜ It is really worth watching! :)

This drama deserves a slot in primetime. The plot is very liberating, especially in a patriarchal society like the Philippines where men are held in high regard over women.

GMA has proven to be very good in promoting its shows. Thus, if GMA wants to pull it off with Jewel in the Palace, then a great deal of promotion is more than necessary. And if the viewers have already been invited to watch then I believe that they can be hooked on this series and enjoy it for all its worth.

In my opinion, it was quite a gamble for GMA to air Winter Sonata. It has a deep storyline (even up to now I am still discovering numerous truths) that I thought people will have problems understanding, but as the promotions have caught up with the storyline, it remains as one of the 3 most successful Tagalized Koreanovelas (Full House, Stairway to Heaven and Winter Sonata) of all time.

The success of Winter Sonata propelled the career of Faith Cuneta, who eventually earned the title of Koreanovela Diva. It prompted ABS-CBN to purchase another Choi Ji Woo drama, The Truth, to somehow neutralize the public's affection for the soap. And who'd forget the line, Winter na sa buong Pilipinas? That was really very catchy.

If GMA will use the same formula for Jewel in the Palace, even though everybody says that this is a gamble on the part of GMA, then Jewel in the Palace will be a huge success. The success of Jewel in the Palace will also propel the success of other dramas employing the same theme (like Damo).

We are definitely in agreement. GMA 7 should use the fact that this is a very popular show in many countries around Asia as a selling point to attract people to watch. This was the VERY SAME gimmick they used to promote Endless Love 1: Autumn in My Heart in 2002 and look at how successful it became.

Well, for me dubbing is the least of our problems because in my opinion, GMA 7 dubs Korean dramas better than ABS-CBN 2. They are the pioneers in Korean drama after all! I've seen the dubbing done on Green Rose and that was the worst I've seen so far!!! :rolleyes:

It's the translation that I worry about. Because there is a tendency to resort to antiquated Tagalog, I do hope that it will be done in good taste.

Hi... saw the teaser a couple days ago, I'm excited na ipapalabas narin ang Jewel in the Palace dito sa Philippines.. i'm a bit worried though on how the drama will be received by the viewing public... this is such a GOOD drama.

Hi... saw the teaser a couple days ago, I'm excited na ipapalabas narin ang Jewel in the Palace dito sa Philippines.. i'm a bit worried though on how the drama will be received by the viewing public... this is such a GOOD drama.
This may sound a bit corny, but after watching it, it made me want to strive to become a better person... and to persevere.

Well, for me dubbing is the least of our problems because in my opinion, GMA 7 dubs Korean dramas better than ABS-CBN 2. They are the pioneers in Korean drama after all! I've seen the dubbing done on Green Rose and that was the worst I've seen so far!!! :rolleyes:

It's the translation that I worry about. Because there is a tendency to resort to antiquated Tagalog, I do hope that it will be done in good taste.

Episode 32 na ba? Well, I'm looking forward to watching the first episode in Tagalog.

Still have the slightest idea when this will be shown, but most likely this will replace Beautiful Days or Hotelier.

I have a Japanese friend who loves watching Korean drama. Dati he asked me kung napanood ko na yung Winter Sonata. I told him, yeah, and it was very popular in the Philippines when it was shown. Then recently he told me about this, and I did my research on the Internet.

InDreams ~ Hindi ako bumili ng boxed set nito eh, so I really don't know if it has English subtitles. DVD compilation din 'to so alam kong malinaw din naman. Pero mura yung P550 sa 168 Mall? Saang section ng mall mo ba yan nahanap? I'm thinking about getting a boxed set myself and in my opinion, this is definitely worth it.

Aside from Jewel in the Palace, I also saw boxed sets of All In, Hotelier, Green Rose, Invitation, Sad Love Story, I'm Sorry I Love You, My Name is Kim Sam Soon, Beautiful Days, Stairway to Heaven, Love Story in Harvard, All About Eve, Full House, Attic Cat, My Love Patzzi, Successful Story of a Bright Girl, Did We Really Ever Love, Firebird, and At the Dolphin Bay (the only Taiwanese drama seires being sold).

Teka, we seem to be focused so much on Lee Young Ae (understandable since she's the lead :D ).. what about other characters in the drama? like Ji Jin Hee.. this is only the 2nd drama I've watched him star in.. the first being SPRING DAY.. i must say that i was impressed with his acting skills..
And Park Eun Hae, as Lee Young Ae's bestfriend, gives a touching and charming performance as well, no wonder the cast of Dae Jang Gum has been extremely popular both in Taiwan and Hongkong...... that's why i'm keeping my fingers crossed that it would also be the same here.... sana

Well you can't really say that it was based on a true story. Kasi ang daming kuwento ng mga Chinese/Japanese/Koreans na sabi nila true stories pero actually mythical.

I think it's safe to say that it was based on ancient Korean folklore.

The first Chinese dynasty was mythical (according to historians and archaeologists), but Chinese history still mentions it as the first dynasty.

The line from Jimmu Tenno (first Japanese emperor) was said to have come from Amaterasu (the Sun God, hence Japan being called the Land of the Rising Sun).

Similarly Dae Jang Geum tells the story of a woman according to some was entirely myth but to others was historic.

don't know if the Filipino audience can appreciate the costumes (coz harder to relate seeing people wearing traditional Korean costume for the entire series) and so many twists and turns.



i have the same misgivings too. i remember the historical/costume series of barbie hsu didn't rate very well with the audience??? so, i',m wondering whether this would sit well with the filipino audience. i don't think they LIKE/ENJOY watching historical series. i hope i would be proven wrong if the show becomes a HIT.
this is a very big hit in other asian countries, except the philippines(??), because the audience who are mostly either japanese, koreans or chinese almost SHARE the cultural background, i mean all of these races had at one time been under MONARCHY( the japanese still have their emperor/empress,princes, and princesses up to the present times), the korean and chinese architecture resemble much while japanese architecture is much simpler and not as ornate as the other 2.

this is my FIRST time to watch a korean series:D :D , it's a little bit Dragging but so far, i like the series specially the MUSIC, "Hope" or "Xi wang", its opening theme.:)

just an honest opinion why eternity didn't hit... its because its a magical story back up with flying kung-fu fighters and sword fights...

on the other hand,

jewel in the palace, is real... historical, and full of drama, heartwarming...
the only different thing is that they are wearing a traditional costume...

just imagine, if ABS-CBN or GMA, do Noli Mi Tangere or El Filibusterismo...
What will be the people's reception to that.?

Well, Eternity did make good during the first how many weeks. But even in other countries, Eternity didn't do good. If I may say, it was close to a flop.

The only selling point for Eternity when it was first shown was that it starred Barbie Xu, then a household name. But eventually, people were attracted to the better storyline of the drama At the Dolphin Bay aired over the rival channel.

The movies where Eternity was based were far better (probably not in special effects) than the TV drama. That's why it flopped--its bad storyline has caught up with it.

On the other hand, even if At the Dolphin Bay was not doing too well in the ratings game during the beginning, it rose to the top because of its superb plot.

The big difference between Dae Jang Geum and Eternity is the plot.

Actually, like what I have mentioned before for East Asians, some mythical characters have somehow become true people because of tradition, word of mouth and folklore.

For instance, the first Chinese dynasty (called Hsia or Xia), which we know as mythical, still forms part of Chinese history and is still often designated as the "first" dynasty that united the small Chinese city states living near the Huang Ho and Yang Tze rivers. Although there have recently been discoveries that the second dynasty (the Shang dynasty), was actually existent, none so far have been dug up for the "first".

Another is the claim of the Tenno family (Japan's royal line known also as the Yamato clan), that they descended from the Sun goddess Amaterasu. Acording to ancient Japanese mythological history, Amaterasu came down from heaven and handed to the first Japanese emperor (Jimmu Tenno, her descendant) a sword and a mirror. Of course Jimmu Tenno eventually conquered small villages and became head of the first Japanese empire. For the Japanese, Jimmu Tenno was really existent, although only ancient writings (and no actual archeological findings) have been discovered proving his existence.

While many say that Jang Geum did exist, her lineage is very obscure. Hmmm, ano kaya timeslot niya? Kung primetime, Darna kaya papalitan niya.

I know this got rave reviews in countries where it was shown. Pero medyo hesitant ako simulan kasi mahaba nga and not really fond of historical dramas... to think I'm really into korean series.

I think it's really a challenge on how GMA will market this, especially if they put this on primetime. Though this an "imported show" kung mag-hit siya baka ma-revolutionize din ang taste ng Filipinos sa mga series di ba? Exciting!!! :D

I agree with you. The original theme song is good, pero Faith Cuneta's OK din naman. Kasi the song Pangarap na Bituin also fits the drama, kaya OK lang naman.

Not unlike yung ginawa nila sa All About Eve wherein yung very nice theme song na True Love ng FinkL, na pinalitan ng very appalling Tagalog theme song that's obviously not memorable.

waaahhh!! *sobs*:( last episode ang pinalabas last night.i loved the ending it was so cute...today and at monday ipapalabas ang JITP special..hope the special also airs there in the philippines..you'll be surprised at how pretty the cast is when they don't have their costumes..ano na kya papanoorin ko at night..haaayy

Gosh, ang ganda ng weekend ko. Nag-rappelling kami, nag-wall climb and nag-slide for life. Sa slide for life meron pa akong harness sa likod and mala-superman yung aking flight! Haha!

Anyways, excited na ako for November. This has already become my favorite drama of all time (second na lang ang Winter Sonata) dahil very rich ang story nito.

Promising at maganda talaga story abangan na lng kung mature enough na ba ang local viewers for this kind of series... it doesn't mean na kse if hit sa other countries automatically hit din sa atin... magkakapareho halos ang culture ng ating neighboring countries... dynasties, costumes, etc. while us more on Spanish culture ang embrace natin... so let's wait and see ;) Sana nga wag masyado late ang airing especially historical drama pa nmn ito :)

while it is true the history of ancient korea is different from ours...the premise of this show lies in the life and struggles of the lead Jang-geum...and of course along the way you get to learn about Korean history...after having watched the show myself bka magustuhan din ito ng mga pinoy...besides marami din subjects ang nata-tackle ng Jewel,which i know filipinos can relate to like backstabbing,political intrigues,a love story,neways maybe magiging open-minded ang mga pinoy sa ganitong show:D

etxetera ~ Kung yung concept nga ng snow na-accept ng mga Pinoy, what about dynasties, monarchies, empires, etc? I don't want to look down on Filipinos because Filipinos are more mature than many Western countries in philosophy. In fact, to develop a concept of a God (for example) who cannot be confined by mortal dimensions of length, time and space, or portrayed by any mortal action is really revolutionary and philosophically advanced. And Bathala find its way even in everyday speech. Bahala na, is a great example.

Same thing goes for our grasp of foreign culture. The only hindrance to this would be in my opinion, poverty, since it decays the mind and numbs the spirit. But once Filipinos transcend the physical--the costumes, the traditions, the culture--they can see what is universal, what binds evry human being on the face of this planet--adversity, pain, triumph and love.

Eto yung isa sa mga climactic events ng story. Knowing that there would no longer be any Lady Han to support her, must Jang Geum proceed and face the tough reality of discrimination or retreat and find comfort in dictates of the society? And gosh! Talagang nakakaiyak 'tong scene na 'to...Yung Mom ko nangingilid yung luha. Sabi ko stop muna yung playback...Hehehe! :)
