Is it just Pop Stop, or do the local celebrity rags seem starved of hot gossip recently? Gone, it seems, are the halcyon days when Hong Kong celebs had photos of their sex capers posted across the Internet, or when Taiwanese starlets blushed after being busted for getting high.

And so it goes that this week the paparazzi dug up the old “Alan Luo and Jolin Tsai are a couple” chestnut. This moribund morsel of showbiz life, which first saw life years ago, is being rehashed because the two pop stars were spotted together in Japan. Tsai’s agent, however, scotched the rumors by saying that the two celebrities were — here comes the classic PR rebuttal — “just friends,” and the fact that pair took the same flight and booked into the same hotel was mere “coincidence.”

Taiwan pop diva Jolin Tsai was thrilled with a gold mahjongg set presented to her as a gift by fans at her 28th birthday on Monday, September 15.

The singer celebrated her birthday – which is one day after the Mid Autumn Festival - with fans at a special party.

Besides mahjongg, Jolin also received moon cakes and other gifts.

Jolin Tsai was happier to have reporters follow her on a recent shopping spree in New York City, where the songstress dropped northwards of NT$10,000 — on sugar-free candy. Tsai, visiting the Big Apple to film a commercial, dragged her entourage up and down and around 5th Avenue before she finally located her favorite specialty purveyor of the low-cal sweets. Once she found the store, the whippet-thin celeb gleefully posed for photos hoisting aloft a giant sack of gummi bears, the manic gleam in her eyes bearing testimony to years of calorie-deprivation.

United Daily News reported that this was the first time in years Tsai had eaten chocolate. She spent the rest of her trip abroad continuously stuffing her face from an ever-present sack of candy, the vernacular daily said. Having exhausted her supply, Tsai made sure to stop by the store again for refills before leaving New York. “Paris and London both have this kind of sugar-free candy,” she told United Daily, “But you can’t find gummi bears in London.”

Cecilia Chung may need to take a page from Tsai’s book about calorie management....

Two songs which respectively remind people of the strong earthquake in China and the Beijing Olympics were named Best Hits at the Ninth CCTV-MTV Music Awards, held Sunday in Beijing.

"Sheng Si Bu Li" ("Together Forever"), which was written shortly after the May 12 earthquake, expressed the unity of Chinese people, while the Olympic song "Welcome to Beijing" showcased Chinese people's hospitality to the world, the awards committee said.

The video of "Welcome to Beijing," featuring around 100 Asian celebrities, was named Best Music Video.

Jackie Chan, who lent voice to both songs, shared a special contribution award with "Welcome to Beijing" composer Xiao Ke. Chan sent a video message to thank the committee and fans.

In the individual categories, Karen Mok and Eason Chan were adjudged Most Popular Hong Kong Female and Male Singer respectively. Jolin Tsai and Show Luo won the same titles in the Taiwan category. Taiwan pop-rock band Sodagreen was the Best Group of Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The award for Most Popular Mainland Male Singer went to Pang Long, while actress-turned-singer Chen Hao was named Most Popular Female Singer.

Chen Hao's win came amid media speculation a week earlier that she already knew she won the award, and that she won by selection, not public voting. Denying this, Chen Hao said that before the function, the organizing committee only invited her to perform a song and nothing else.

The annual CCTV-MTV awards, jointly organized by China Central Television and MTV, were halted last year for various reasons.

Jolin Tsai plans to transfer to Warner Music after her upcoming Guangzhou concert on December 13.

As Jolin's contract with the record label 'Gold Typhoon' has expired, the Taiwan top-selling diva has finally decided to sign with Warner Music for some 30 millon yuan, or more than 4 million US dollars, according to news released on Thursday

A grand signing ceremony will be held on December 16 in Beijing's National Aquatics Centre, or the Olympic "Water Cube", the Information Times reported.

"Everything for the ceremony is now in preparation," the newspaper quotes a Warner Music worker, whose name was not given, as saying.

Jolin's new album, which as the singer revealed earlier has completed production, is expected to be released after the Chinese lunar New Year.

On Wednesday night people all around Taiwan will be putting their woes — financial and otherwise — behind them and counting down to the beginning of a New Year. Wherever you are around the country, there is a party somewhere near you, where the traditional entertainments of music and fireworks will be on hand to liven up the hours as the clock ticks down to midnight.

Taoyuan County has brought in CTV to organize its event, going head-to-head with Taipei City Hall’s big bash, organized by TVBS. The Taoyuan do will take place at the Taoyuan Multipurpose Culture Park, at the corner of Jhongjheng Road and Tongde 6th Road. Mayday and Jolin Tsai are the headliners, and Cape No. 7 star Van Fan and familiar faces from the One Million Star “talent” show will also be making appearances. Who is rigging the music charts and mocking those who play fair and square?

The story so far: Pop idol Alan Luo, also known as Little Pig, beats ABT heartthrob Wang Lee-hom and secures the top spot in G-music’s sales charts. Wang’s label, Sony BMG, strikes back and accuses Luo’s label, Gold Typhoon, of cheating on the sales figures. To maximize the news value of its barb, Sony held a press conference calling for an “honesty movement” to eradicate corrupt practices from the music chart industry.

What intrigues gossip journos more, however, is Wang’s conspicuous absence from the event that was held under his name. According to dirt dug up by Next magazine, Sony is far from the innocent bystander it claims to be. Facing the prospect of losing Wang’s contract should his album not triumph, the label’s alleged attempt at buying off record retailers failed, and the sore loser put on a show of bravado in a desperate move.

Wang’s no-show at the press conference was interpreted as a refusal to get involved in the “war of words.”

Those who did attend couldn’t be blamed if they felt used, especially Jay Chou. The Mando-pop king was the center of the attention at the confab. A couple of years ago he implied that Chen Tse-shan, the celebrated music impresario, had knowingly manipulated the charts for his clients who include Jolin Tsai.
