Synopsis:

Jay Chou's directorial debut. This is the first day Lun admitted to Tamkang Secondary School. When he walks through the campus with his classmates, a mysterious piano solo draws his attention. He follows the song and finds that an ethereal girl is playing piano in the old music room. The piano girl is Yu (Guey Lun-Mei), one of Lun’s classmates. The two become intimate friends and spend a lot of time together. “What’s the melody you played the first day we met?” asked Lun, “That’s my secret.” Yu whispered in his ear.

The vixen has trimmed her hair and squeezed herself into a revealing black cat suit for the new look. Last year she was voted the "best fake breasts" by Chinese Web site Yam. In Pop Stop's opinion, Tsai's breast augmentation was a wise choice as without it she would look like a skinny bowling pin, all waist and a little head.

Taiwan singer Jolin Tsai, whose dancing skills are highly acclaimed, breaks out some new stunts for her next release.

Besides break dancing, ribbon dancing, and using a pommel horse and parallel rings, the list of Jolin's athletic accomplishments is to be further supplemented with pole dancing and aerial ribbon dancing.

The singer learnt the moves from a British teacher through 10 days of intense training, her company said.

The new skills are to be used in making a glamour music video for her next album "Tewu J", or "Agent J". The album will be released in October this year.

In other babe-related news, queen of cute Rainie Yang's status as the "first lady" at music giant Sony BMG was reinforced as her third album hit store shelves last week, ready for a duel with Sony BMG deserter Jolin Tsai, whose new album is slated to be released by the end of this month.

Known as local show biz's dancing diva, Tsai is expected to take the battle to the dance floor with her improved pole dancing, acrobatic and yoga stunts in tight and glittering attire.

Fans of popular culture have ringside seats to a slugfest between some of the biggest names in show business this week.

Jolin Tsai and Patty Hou, two former beaus, reportedly, of Jay Chou, are following 50 Cent and Kanye West's lead and battling it out with their latest releases.

Tsai, who reportedly lost her former squeeze to Hou, appeared to kick Hou right where it hurts - on the career front.

Tsai continues on an upward path with her upcoming album Agent J, for which she traded in her dreamy princess look for that of a dominatrix complete with latex gear and an exaggerated bustier. The album has racked up over 50,000 prerelease orders.

Hou, former anchorwoman and talk show hostess, has decided to crossover - into acting. She is starring in the TV romance series Delicious Relation, which aired its pilot episode Sunday. According to A.C. Nielson, a marketing and TV rating company, Delicious Relation was trumped by another new romance series, Romantic Princess, which stars rising pop starlet Angela Chang, 1.67 rating points to 3.33 points.

Worse was to come. Variety show Sunday 8pm Gang fired a broadside by extending its airtime 15 minutes with a slot featuring Tsai, which coincided with Hou's acting debut. Tsai's 15-minute appearance on the variety show garnered a 4.45 points rating, which outshone Hou's acting stint, which mustered a measly 1.72 points, according to A.C. Nielson.

In a recent homosexual popularity contest, Aboriginal diva A-mei outshone dancing queen Jolin Tsai to become the rainbow ambassador for Taiwan's LGBT community and an honorary witness to the same-sex "wedding" ceremonies slated to take place at the 2007 Taiwan Pride Parade on Oct. 13.

Unperturbed, EMI issued a statement proclaiming Tsai as the new queens' queen. Taiwan Pride Community (TPC) leapt to the rescue, rebutted the label's doublespeak and confirmed A-mei's rainbow credentials.

Noting both pop stars are highly admired among the LGBT community, TPC stated A-mei had been chosen as the event's spokeswomen a long time ago and noted Tsai was fully booked on the day. The group said it was at a loss to explain EMI's declaration.

In its quest for pink dollars, EMI got egg on its face, but has hopefully learned its lesson: You can fool some LGBTs all of the time, and all LGBTs some of the time, but you cannot fool all LGBTs all of the time.

Jolin said she felt quite happy to have this rare opportunity to sing alongside her idol.

She will fly to Australia on Tuesday to meet Kylie.

Jolin Tsai, a Taiwanese pop star famed throughout East Asia for her singing and dancing, said on Saturday she aimed to move into film.

Tsai, who has experience of appearing in videos, said she was looking to star in light-hearted movies with a dance theme, initially to keep her name strong among fans in the Chinese mainland, Taiwan and Chinese-speaking Southeast Asia as well as ethnic Chinese people elsewhere in the world.

"Movies are something I haven't done yet, and I've got to find a chance," Tsai, 27, said at her Taipei recording company offices. "I'd like to use my movements to evoke dramatic feelings."

She has set her sights on shooting films in scenic areas of the mainland, such as the lakes and mountains of Jiuzhaigou in the western province of Sichuan.

Tsai, one of the most popular and successful singers in the Mandarin music market, has performed in the mainland countless times and sold millions of albums there.

Tsai recorded a duet with Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue for Minogue's new album due out next month. So far, she says, that tie-up with the West is a one-off thing, but she hopes it can be extended.

"I hope, of course, that in the future I can do it again," said Tsai, who was dressed in black.

"I'm someone who doesn't stop. I'm always doing something. I'll always look for more stuff to help me grow up."

Tsai's break into movies could generate recognition outside the Chinese-speaking world, where other local pop singers often fail because of differing music tastes and language barriers.

Tsai first made a name in 1999 by winning first place in an MTV singing competition with a cover of the Whitney Houston song "The Greatest Love of All."

Her first album, Jolin 1019, came out a year later and sold more than 400,000 copies in Asia. She has released nine albums altogether. The most successful, Dancing Diva, sold more than one million copies following its release last year.

Her latest album, Agent, has sold 150,000 copies since its release in September.

The tourists' heaven of Suzhou in eastern China turned into a heaven for star-chasers Wednesday night, as big names from the country's entertainment circle gathered there to raise the curtain for China's top film gala.

The 16th Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival opened with film stars singing and dancing on the stage.

Suzhou-born Hong Kong actress Carina Lau kicked off the night with a show-off of her dancing skills.

Lau was followed by mainland actresses Huang Shengyi, Huang Yi, and actor Huang Xiaoming.

Action movie superstar, Jackie Chan, also took to the stage to share his memory of the film festival.

Singing sensations, including Jolin Tsai and Tsai Chin from Taiwan, and Joey Yung from Hong Kong, also contributed to the festival.

In the following days, a slew of domestic and foreign films will be screened in different sessions.

A special screening section is planned for Chinese winners of the Venice International Film Festival. Marco Muller, director of the Venice film festival, will appear on the scene to greet audiences.

The festival will be wrapped up on Saturday with another star-studded night honoring winners of the Golden Rooster Awards, known as China's Oscars.

The competition between Jolin Tsai and Jay Chou heated up this week with the Mando-pop king claiming that Tsai's record company is over-stating sales of her recently released Agent J to, well, increase sales. The two alleged ex-lovers have been battling it out for years over which is Taiwan's top pop star.

The Chairman, in a thinly veiled attempt to drum up publicity for his own album On the Run, which goes on release today, told the media last week that he would be honest about his record sales.

Predictably, Tsai stood her ground and told the press that hard work rather than overblown figures is boosting sales. Pop Stop thinks that Chou should take a chill pill; his enemy isn't so much Tsai as the thousands of fans who will inevitably download his new album for free. Curiously, this is the second time that the pair have released albums almost simultaneously. Perhaps the two are in cahoots.

Fancy yourself as the next Jay Chou or Jolin?

Mando pop, Thai rap, Korean hip-hop: all popular in their respective countries and throughout Asia. But young talents from this part of the world are rarely heard on Western radio stations or seen on MTV.

Colleen Zulian, however, is on a mission to change this by holding televised talent contests, collectively known as Sutasi, throughout Asia to introduce rising stars from the East to the international music market. Winners can expect cash prizes and record deals amounting to US$1 million.

"Hopefully what we are doing will rectify this problem and make them known internationally and give them recognition," the president and chairwoman of Asia Sounds Pty Ltd said at a press conference on Tuesday.

"I didn't know that Jay Chou was from Taiwan," she said. "I thought he was Korean." Mistaking Chou's nationality is emblematic of the local music industry's lack of overseas marketing, said Zulian, who has worked with international acts such as Burt Bacharach, Bob Dylan and Ani DiFranco.

Sutasi is a competition that includes a songwriting contest and a music contest to find the hottest unsigned performer in Asia. Twelve finalists from each of three regions - Southeast Asia, South Asia and East Asia - will battle it out on live television to represent their nation in the grand finals.

Applications for East Asia - which includes Taiwan, China, Japan and Korea - are now being accepted through the Sutasi Web site at www.sutasi.com.

The site features information in Asian languages including Thai, Vietnamese, East Timorese, Lao, Burmese, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Music industry professionals and celebrities as well as the public will judge the contest, she said.

Zulien says Sutasi differs from other talent contests because it looks at more than just the music of a region.

"We call it a window into Asia because we are incorporating a travelogue about the cultures that they come from so we can show the different cultures of Southeast Asia. We will do it for Taiwan, Korea and China," she said.

Taiwan goes all out for New Year's

Fireworks at Taipei 101, a beach party near Taitung and a floating theater in Kaohsiung are just a few of the activities planned to welcome 2008

New Year's Eve is just around the corner. There's so much to do, and so little time to do it. From fireworks displays and star-studded concerts to festivities spiked with local flavors, Taiwan will be full of events where you can watch the ball drop without dropping the ball.

Taipei City will once again be the scene of the country's biggest pyrotechnics display - and its biggest plume of smoke - when Taipei 101 turns into a giant firecracker launchpad at midnight. A record-breaking number of spectators is expected to turn up for the show this year and watch 12,000 fireworks shoot into the sky.

The management of Taipei 101 has hinted that the skyscraper, which is nearing full occupancy, may stop hosting the explosive spectacle next year because of lack of funding and the difficulty of securing permission from all of the building's tenants.

If you plan on being anywhere near Taipei 101 in the Xinyi District on Monday, it's best to get there early. While you wait, there will be a pop concert in front of Taipei City Hall that starts at 7pm and runs to the stroke of midnight. The lineup includes familiar faces such as singers Jolin Tsai, Alan Luo, Jasmine Leong and Tanya Chua, as well as rock bands Mayday and Champion.

Other events in the area include a carnival-like parade of 600 performers and floats that will run through the streets of the Xinyi District near Taipei City Hall between 2pm and 5pm on Sunday. Also in the vicinity, the finals of the third annual MRT Cup Pop Music Contest are being held at the Shinkong Mitsukoshi complex.

Malls in the area around Taipei 101 will extend their business hours to accommodate the crowds on New Year's Eve. Both Neo 19 and New York, New York will remain open until midnight. New York, New York's food court will operate until 1am, and the food court at Taipei 101's shopping mall will not shut its doors until 2am.

Four temporary bus stops are being set up to deal with the massive exodus after the countdown, and the MRT's trains will run all night. A word of advice for those planning on taking a car or motorcycle: Don't even think about it unless you don't mind getting stuck in traffic for hours.

Moving south, Kaohsiung City will be hosting a New Year's Eve party that kicks off at 7pm at its Star of the Sea pier area. Performances will feature mainstream and indie acts, including Wang Lee-hom, Soda Green, The Chairman, Faith Yang, Dog G and Cyndi Wang

Fireworks of gold and silver symbolizing a prosperous future and a robust economy illuminated the skies near Taipei 101 last night as tens of thousands of revelers packed the streets of the city's Xinyi District to welcome the year 2008.

Hundreds of thousands of spectators were expected to gather around Taipei 101 to watch the 188-second-long fireworks and join in the New Year activities.

A total of 12,000 rounds of fireworks were expected to be launched, reaching as high as 500m, in contrast with the 9,000 rounds used in last year's fireworks display.

The message "2008 Taiwan," with a pink heart replacing the dot in the letter "i" was to be displayed on Taipei 101 following the fireworks show.

Several well-known performers, including Jolin Tsai and Aska Yang, were scheduled to participate in the New Year concert.

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin was also to address the crowd on issues such as the city's preparations for the Summer Deaflympics next year and the 2010 Taipei International Gardening and Horticulture Exposition.

To accommodate the massive crowds that were expected to gather in and around the Xinyi District, the Taipei Rapid Transit System offered an around-the-clock service for the first time yesterday.

Asked for comment earlier yesterday, Michael Liu, an assistant vice president at Taipei 101, said it was still too early to conclude that Taipei 101 would not hold a similar fireworks show in future years.

Liu said that all the floors of the building were expected to be fully occupied in the coming year, which would make it difficult for the shopping center to obtain approval from all the companies on higher floors to display messages on the building.

Without the facility to display messages, it would be difficult for any patrons to sponsor the fireworks show, he said, adding that Taipei 101 could seek funding from its board of directors to make future firework shows possible.

Taiwan pop diva Jolin Tsai didn't stop making favorable music in the past year. One of her songs topped the newly-released 2007 Hito Top 100 Singles, her second taking of the annual honor.

Tsai's love ballad, "The Sun Will Never Set" was crowned as the chart-topper through an online poll held by the local Hit Fm radio station. The pop music broadcaster, one of the highest rating radio stations in Taiwan, received 340,000 votes this year.

Tsai's duet with David Tao in 2006 "Marry Me Today" was that year's top single.

Following Jolin Tsai on the 2007 list is Jay Chou's "Secret," the title song of his directorial debut of the same name.

The third spot is occupied by Canadian pop singer Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend."

Other musicians in the Top 10 include Jasmine Leong (4th; "J'Adore"), pop-rock band Mayday (5th; "Angel"), and Japanese singer Utada Hikaru (7th; "Flavor of Life").

Pop prince Jay Chou is the most popular voice for mobile phone ring tones and ring-back tones as he received the Most Downloaded Male Singer award on Sunday at a pop charts gala jointly held by China Mobile and Shanghai Media Group.

Unlike other music awards, the pop gala, running in its second year, honors Chinese singers based on the number of paid downloads of their songs by China Mobile users. The company is the world's most subscribed-to mobile phone operator.

Jay Chou won the title with 26,315,089 downloads, almost twice that of the Most Downloaded Female Singer, Jolin Tsai. Tsai's songs were downloaded 14,841,653 times last year, according to China Mobile rankings.

Among the most popular ring tone songs were Chou's "Secret," from the soundtrack of his directorial debut of the same name, Tsai's "36 Tricks of Love," Eason Chan's "Love Transfer" and S.H.E's "Chinese."

Other honorees for the night included Wilber Pan, Lee-Hom Wang, and Chang Chen Yue.

The stars of the hit Taiwan variety TV talk show "The Advent of Kang Xi," including hosts Kevin Tsai and Dee Hsu, are coming to the Shanghai Stadium on March 15.

The star-studded three-hour concert will also feature pop idols Jolin Tsai and Alan Law, who will both sing.

It will be a special occasion for Hsu, the younger sister of actress Barbie Hsu who is also known as "The Small S." The concert will be her first mainland performance since she gave birth to her second daughter in November.

Hsu says she is very happy to have the golden pig baby according to Chinese Lunar calendar. This, of course, is very auspicious.

Her personal "Pregnancy Diary", which is full of humor and wisdom, has been a best-seller.

"I don't have any plans to quit the entertainment industry, although I now attach much more importance to family," Hsu said recently.

"I don't expect my kids to take up my career as you know, because it is replete with unexpected hardship and challenges."
