The 13th Chinese Music Awards On Thursday

Jay Chou, Lee-Hom Wang, Zhang Liangying and Zhou Bichang are just some of the luminaries competing for honors at the 13th Chinese Music Awards on Thursday night in Shanghai.

The lead-up to the largest music awards night in China began at the end of last year. Stars like Jin Hai Hsin, Sha Baoliang, Zhang Liangying and Shuimunianhua performed in special ceremony to launch the awards in Beijing.

Three more warm-up shows with high-profile Chinese musicians were later staged in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

The nominees for some of the awards are listed below.

Best Male Singer (Mainland): Xu Wei, Anson Hu, Zhang Jingxuan, Sha Baoliang and Michael Zhen.

Best Male Singer (Hong Kong and Taiwan): Eason Chan, Jacky Zhang, Kenji Wu, David Tao and Jay Chou.

Best Female Singer (Mainland): Jin Hai Hsin, Jin Sha, Icy Cao, Wang Zhen and Li Huizhen.

Best Female Singer (Hong Kong and Taiwan): Jolin Tsai, Penny Dai, Ah-Mei, Tanya Chua and Fish Leong.

蔡依林人在英伦，绯闻无端上身，先是在机场与郑元畅同机，到英伦又巧遇彭于晏後，一行四人逛街，却被影射成「代官山绯闻」翻版，她乾脆公开在伦敦的逍遥生活，并秀出新买的机车包战利品。
Jolin is in London now but her love rumours still happened, first is the coincidental meeting of Joe Zheng at the airport then is another 'coincidental' meeting with 彭于晏, and then being witnessed that both were shopping together in London. This new rumour has been viewed by many as the Jolin and Jay rumour[both witnessed in Japan together years ago] and as well as the Jay-Hebe rumour in England too not long ago. And also the Jay-Patty news[that was why ppl knew they were together].

日前有网友爆料，目击Jolin与彭于晏同游，还不承认自己是Jolin本尊，昨天经纪人蒋承缙愤怒地说，媒体断章取义，网友文章明明就提到身旁还有Jolin的经纪人和彭于晏的姊姊，却被刻意略过。
Recently, a lady disclosed on a forum on the net that she saw Jolin and 彭于晏 in London shopping together, Jolin also did not admit that she was Jolin. Yesterday, Jolin's manager rebuked that the lady who disclosed this news included that 彭于晏's sister and Jolin's manager were also with them, but the reporters did not include them in their reports.

Jolin则在官网上承认，「我发现在伦敦华人还满多的，不断有人认出我，刚开始我都还会微笑承认，到後来实在没办法了，嘻，只好假装我不是蔡依林。」显然，她当初一直怕狗仔队跟拍，没想到当地华人的「情报网」更惊人。
Jolin then admitted on her blog."I realised that there are quite alot of chinese in London, people kept acknowledging me, at first i would smile and admit, but later on i had no choice, haha, so i had to pretend i wasn't Jolin." Obviously,she was very afraid of the paparazzi tailing her, however the secret reports reported by the chinese there are scarier.

Jolin抵达第2天就坐地铁去上歌唱课，老师Mary约50多岁，课程很特别，竟然要小天后躺在地上，找出身体应该正确用力的地方。蔡依林得意地说，很喜欢重当学生的感觉，也很认真，上完歌唱课就赶去上舞蹈，第一天学的是钢管舞和埃及舞，但她笑说：「可惜男老师好像很喜欢跟女学生哈啦，也许这就是这里的风俗习惯吧，看来我得适应才行罗。」
When Jolin reached London for the 2nd day, she already sat the subway to attend her singing lesson, her teacher Mary who is abt 50 years old taught her many new stuff and her lesson was very special. She also asked Jolin to lie on the ground and find the spot that her body should use to exert strength. Jolin proudly said that she likes the feeling of being a student again, and is very hardworking, after her singing lesson, she immediately went for her dancing lesson. The first lesson was abt pole-dancing and egyptian dance, but she laughingly said "It's weird that the male teachers here like to play and tease the female students especially, i guess the people here are used to this, i will have to get used to this too."

Actually before her London holiday, Jolin also went to Japan to shoot a new Levi's Jeans ad, during the shooting process, the photographer and cameraman kept asking her to do twirls and jumps in the air as well as cycling while bare-footed. Or lying on the ground and doing all sorts of poses that are sexy and can show off the beautiful lines and curves of the body. Jolin is the new Levi's Jeans female endorser, replacing Korean's Pop Queen Boa.

我發現在倫敦華人還蠻多的，不斷有人認出我，剛開始我都還會微笑承認，到後來實在沒辦法了，嘻！只好假裝我不是蔡依林，噓！你們可不要說噢！
I know alot of you miss me, but before i can finally confirm the various routes i have to take in the future, i immediately opened my labtop and typed this entry to tell all of you that im safe and sound.

來英國的第二天公主就坐地鐵去上歌唱課了，我很喜歡這種重新當學生的感覺，我的唱歌老師MARY老師是個約50多歲的人，她的課程很特別，一開始就先拿出一本書，讓我看圖，比較各種不同發聲的位置，然後到最後更妙了，Mary老師叫我躺在地上，找出我身體應該正確用力的地方，她非常有經驗，23年來教過很多歌劇界的大明星，光上一堂課就讓我大開眼界，超新奇的！
On the 2nd day here, i already took the subway to attend my singing lesson, i really like the feeling to be a student all over again, my singing teacher Mary is about 50 years old, her lesson is very special, firstly, she took out a book for me to read. The book is about the different places in our bodies to produce sounds, after this it was even more unqiue, she asked me to lie down on the floor to find the spot which my body should use to exert strength. She has alot of experience and she has taught many famous students these 23 years, the first lesson has already let me see and experience many new things, its super unqiue!
公主很認真呦！中午我們隨便吃了點東西，就趕去上舞蹈課，你們沒想到吧！老師第一天教的竟然是：鋼管舞和埃及舞，我的同學好多啊！老師的鋼管舞真的超炫，因為學校有規定不能拍照，不然公主一定拍給你們看啊！嗯，只可惜男老師好像很喜歡跟女學生哈拉，也許這就是這裡的風俗習慣吧！看來我得適應才行囉！
Princess is very hardworking o! In the afternoon after eating something, i rushed to attend my dancing lesson, quite surprising right? What the teacher tuaght in the first lesson was unexpectedly pole-dancing and egyptian dance, i have many classmates! While on my way back to the hotel, London was so cold! But she is really a beautiful city, i cant help it but to take photos of KING'S ROAD and SLOANE STREET which are near my hotel, i also bought a new red bag which i have eben eyeing for a very long time, i treat it as a gift to myself after having worked so ahrd this past year, i will show it for all of you to see too.
Here, the sky gets darker at about 4 plus, im still adapting.

In regard to local celebrity tidbits, dancing queen Jolin Tsai was spotted spending her sabbatical leave last weekend in London with Canada-educated wannabe star Eddie Peng known for his reasonably pretty face and nothing else.

Contrary to the usual denials issued by celebrity agents, Peng's showed a rare sign of bluntness by saying he really looks forward to the romance blossoming; not surprising really as the social climber would be able to scale new heights if he got in there with the queen of Man.

"Dancing Diva" Jolin Tsai took home the most awards at the 2007 HITO Pop Music Awards held Saturday night in Taiwan.

Jolin Tsai was named HITO female singer for the fourth time in a row at the 2007 HITO Pop Music Awards held Saturday night in Taiwan.

The "Dancing Diva" star was also the biggest winner of the night, taking home another four awards, including the most popular female singer by votes.

Chinese-American singer Wang Lee-Hom retained last year's title as HITO male singer.

Other honored musicians included David Tao as HITO producer, Jay Chou as HITO singer/songwriter, S.H.E as HITO female group and rising indie musician Zhang Xuan as HITO female newcomer.

Spring Festival Gala Holds Run-through

With the Chinese or lunar New Year just around the corner, the annual CCTV Spring Festival Gala conducted its first complete rehearsal Monday night.

Star Daily reports ten programs, including crosstalk and comic skits, went through run-throughs; however, all of the singers from Hong Kong and Taiwan have yet to rehearse with the full show at this time.

This year's gala will last four hours, under the theme "Happy and Harmonious Chinese Year."

Most of the pop stars from Hong Kong and Taiwan will get together to perform during the singing session "Popular Winds," which targets younger audiences.

Angela Cheung from Taiwan, A Niu from Malaysia, Joey Yung from Hong Kong and Han Xue from the Chinese mainland will each sing a song during the show. David Tao and Jolin Tsai from Taiwan will perform a duet called "I Will Marry You Tomorrow."

Celebrated Chinese comedian Zhao Benshan and his partner Song Dandan, along with crosstalk artist Niu Qun, will join together this year for a sketch at the gala.

China's Central Television Station first held and broadcasted its Spring Festival Gala on (lunar) New Year's Eve 1983. Since then, the annual gala has become a major program for Chinese people and overseas Chinese to celebrate the lunar New Year.

The eve of this year's Spring Festival falls on February 17th.

What are the ratings? Jolin Tsai, Rainie Yang, Alan Luo, and Stanley Huang, all from the same company, next month will release a "I Love Big Stars Exclamation Mark" special edition book. Stanley wanted Alan to rate Jolin and Rainie, on a scale of 1-10, and Jolin only received a 6, losing to Rainie.

Asked why? According to the reports, Alan said it's because Jolin doesn't praise people, when he shows her a finished MV, her only reaction would be a "uh-huh" and then leaves. But Rainie is too cute when she's acting cute, and she'll always pretend to be a mouse, so she only lost 2 points.

Last year's magazine report that Alan and Rainie had problems during their U.S. tour. In the book, Alan and Rainie's conversation were very straightforward. When she asked him when he will say goodbye to the celebrity world, he replied that he will always be a celebrity, because being a celebrity will be more popular than being a cutesy star, and being cute only means that one day someone else will replace you.

In the book, Rainie wanted the two boys to choose between a sexy-bodied smelly girl and a plain not smelly girl; both Stanley and Alan immediately chose the smelly hot girl. Stanley even went on to say that as long as he pinches his nose that's good enough. Even Rainie chose to be with the smelley hot girl, she said, because you can get rid of the smellyness with surgery. Only Jolin was willing to be with the ugly boy, she wouldn't date a smelly boy.

Princess Jolin Welcomes the God of Wealth

Despite being holidaying overseas, Jolin Tsai has not forgotten that on the 5th day of CNY is the day to welcome the God of Wealth. On her online blog she wrote, “Princesses (Jolin) has welcomed the God of Wealth for you all!” The singer earned TW$280 million in the past year, it is certain that she hopes to do as well this year.

Jolin also used a Chinese calligraphy brush to write ‘Happy Year of the Pig’ to wish her fans well. Her writing was beautiful and the happily Jolin boasted, “I learnt calligraphy for 2 years when I was young. I have certificates at home from calligraphy competitions. Although I never came first, I was still a finalist!”

Jolin will return to work at the beginning of March.

Another budding relation-ship in the spotlight is between the queen of Mando-pop Jolin Tsai and foreign-educated wannabe star Eddie Peng. The pretty boy is reportedly following Tsai from online chat rooms to late night parties.

Peng's strategy seems to be working as Tsai told members of the local press last week that, "Peng is a good friend that I can talk to," which in dating game speak roughly translates as, "ya, I like him and we'll see how it goes."

East Music Awards Winners Announced

Chinese mainland R&B singer Hu Yanbin and pop singer Jin Haixin were honored as best male and female singer respectively at this year's East Music Awards Sunday night.

Over twenty musicians claimed honors at the oldest award in the Chinese mainland for original music, held at the Shanghai Grand Stage.

Hong Kong star Eason Chan and Taiwan pop queen Jolin Tsai were among the "five top musicians for Chinese music."

Unlike previous years, this year's awards were more generous for newcomers to the Chinese music scene, especially the supernovas rising from popular singing competitions.

Zhou Bichang, runner-up in 2005's Super Girl competition, took home the "outstanding performance of the year." Her hit "Phone Number" was also on the list of "top ten golden songs."

"The Young Battlefield" performed by heart-throbs from the contest "My Hero" was also picked for the list.

A big variety concert titled as "The Light of Matsu" was held Friday night at the Dajia Gymnasium in the Taichung County of China's Taiwan Province.

As an important part of this year's Matsu International Tourist Cultural Festival in Dajia, the concert was jointly held by Taichung County, Fujian Media Group and the Taiwan-based Eastern Multimedia Group.

Matsu has been one of the major religious beliefs in Chinese coastal provinces.

Pop singers from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, including Jolin Tsai, Luo Dayou, Sun Nan and singing groups S.H.E and Shuimu Nianhua, drew nearly 30 thousand local audiences to the concert.

Top Taiwan variety hosts Tsai Kang Yung and Timothy Chao, Zhao Na from Fujian TV co-hosted the concert.

The Web site http://www.sina.com.cn/ reported the diva was supposed to sing along with three fans on a TV show, but was reluctant to do so as it would make her look amateurish. "You're too good for this?" the director was reported as shouting. Eventually, Tsai bit the bullet and did as she was told.

May is the month of tax collection in Taiwan. And, the media reports that Lee Hom Wang and Jolin Tsai, as the biggest star earners last year, are sure to make their contributions.

Lee Hom Wang has earned about 70 million yuan, with 5 million yuan arriving from his 6 concerts and shows. He has also signed ten advertisement deals relating to food products, clothes, cell phones and shampoo. In addition, he received 40 million yuan by extending his contract with his record company.

Jolin Tsai earned her 30 million from her new record company, and 20 million from advertisements. Her total salary last year was also around 70 million yuan.

In terms of group salary, S.H.E earned the most. The model, Lin Chiling, has taken the individual salary lead in her group.

Taiwan pop queen Jolin Tsai recently apologized through her agent for refusing to sing with fans in a TV show organised by China's Central Television Station, CCTV.

During the recording of the show on April 30, Jolin Tsai was supposed to sing three songs, including "Today You Will Marry Me", which she had performed with Taiwan singer David Tao at the 2007 CCTV Spring Festival Gala.

Jolin Tsai was asked by the director to sing with a fan picked from the audience, but she refused to do so, saying it was not written in her contract.

Enraged by her attitude, Director Sun Bin launched a fierce quarrel with the assistant of the star. The recording was stalled for several minutes.

Finally, the star agreed to sing with three "fans": one from the audience, the other two being staff working for her company.

It is reported that Jolin Tsai was the only one who hadn't shown up during a previous rehearsal of the show, to which big stars Aaron Kwok, Emil Chau and Jasmine Leung were also invited.

A representative of Jolin's company, Electrical and Music Industries (EMI), said the incident was caused by a misunderstanding between the two sides.

Sodagreen: Dark Horse at 18th Golden Melody Award Nominations

Independent pop band Sodagreen from Taiwan received seven 18th Golden Melody Award nominations for their album "Little Universe" on Friday, making them this year's dark horse.

Lim Sen Siong was next in line with six nominations for his album "Plant Trees", which was recorded in the Hakka dialect from south China.

Female songstress Zhang Xuan received four nomination for the high musical quality and record sales of her long-anticipated first album, "My Life Will...". The album was released in 2006 after more than six years of contract disputes.

Underground bands dominated the Best Bands nominations this year. Even last year's winner, Mayday, dropped off the list of nominees this year.

Despite this trend, six nominations went to big names like Jay Chow, David Tao, Jolin Tsai and Karen Mok.

Jay Chow and Jolin Tsai, who have been romantically linked in the past, will compete for awards in two categories, "The Songs of the Year" and "Best Producer for Single".

R&B singer David Tao was nominated for the Best Male Singer award for the sixth time.

The Special Contribution Award will go to the late Taiwan musician Chang Hung-Yi.

Unlike last year, the pop music awards will be bestowed in a separate ceremony to the awards for traditional and artistic music. The pop music awards night will be held at Taipei's Little Dome on June 16. The traditional and artistic awards ceremony will be held at Liberty Square on June 2.

Another sore loser who lost her title of Killer of Teenage Boys to Jolin Tsai a few years ago is former pop idol Yuki Hsu, who has returned to the spotlight after a five-year hiatus, decked out in a cheap black-leathered temptress look, clearly catering to her older male fans.

As the old saying goes "a gentleman can wait three years to take his revenge," and Yuki successfully made the gossip headlines with insinuations her old foe is just a copycat of Japan's pop diva Ayumi Hamasaki, appropriating her look, dance steps, music video and crystal nails.

Whether or not the copycat accusation will stick remains highly questionable, but a catfight is clearly brewing.

Return to the music

While alternative sounds are once again prominent at this year's Golden Melody Awards, many pundits believe the competition will maintain the balance of power between the alternative and the mainstream unless the event itself undergoes a structural change

It's another gloomy year for heavyweight pop idols as alternative music once again predominates over the mainstream on the nomination lists for the 18th Golden Melody Awards, which are scheduled to take place at Taipei Arena next Saturday. With folk rock outfit Sodagreen garnering the most nominations (Best Album, Best Band, Best Producer, Best Lyricist, Best Songwriter and Best Composer categories), followed by Hakka musician Lin Sheng-xiang with six and singer/songwriter Deserts Chang with four, the annual music event seems to reaffirm musical quality rather than pandering to popular taste, in theory at least.

The shift is most evident in the Best Mandarin Album category that sends Jolin Tsai's Dancing Diva up against indie productions such as Sodagreen's Microcosmos, Deserts Chang's My Life Will and Blue in Love by Puyuma duo Hao-en and Jiajia.

While the presence of alternative music is clearly felt in most categories, the Mandarin performer nominations are nevertheless dominated by pop acts. Six-time nominee David Tao is vying for the Best Mandarin Male Singer trophy with a younger generation of pop idols including Ken Wu, Gary Tsao and Lin Jun-jie, who won the title of Best Mandarin Newcomer in 2004. As for the female leads, teen idols Jolin Tsai and Angela Chang face fierce competition from veteran Hong Kong singer Sandy Lam and eight-time nominee A-mei along with Malaysia-born songstress Penny Tai and Taiwan's emerging jazz musician Jyotsn'a Pang.

Deserts Chang's debut album My Life Will has won her four nominations: Best Album; Best Lyricist; Best Songwriter; and Best Song categories.

It is commonly agreed that the awards began leaning toward the alternative scene in 2000 as Luantan walked home with the Best Band title and the Best Mandarin Male Singer went to Puyuma musician Chen Jien-nien.

"The emergence of indie bands and musicians was related to a change in the jury structure as more musicians, critics, producers and other professionals were on board to hand the awards to the best, not the most popular," said Jamie Won, veteran music critic and a jury member in 2000 and 2004.

His view is shared by Ho Tung-hung, assistant professor at the department of psychology of Fu Jen Catholic University and past GMA jury member. "Unlike other music events in Asian countries that collude with record companies and the entertainment industries, the Golden Melody Awards stress the independence of musical spirit rather than bowing to the market," said Ho, though admitting that the jury members oftentimes resolve to reach a "balance" between the mainstream and the alternative.

In the eyes of Ho and Won, such problems can be eliminated if there is a permanent jury system with clear guidelines that encourage diversity in music and the awards are readjusted to reflect different music genres instead of the current language categorization.

Viewed by Ho as the application of political correctness, the linguistic classification is "backward, [and] acts as [an] affirmative action for the mainstream," said Chung She-fong, director of Tress Music & Art.

Both Ho and Chung agree that the current design confines non-Mandarin musicians to certain categories when they could easily become strong contenders in other major categories. "A piece of good music is a piece of good music. You can't hand the major awards to others just because, say, Lin Sheng-xiang wins the Best Hakka Singer title," said Ho, a scholar specializing in Taiwan's pop music industry.

The binary division of pop and traditional music further implies people have a limited perception of what music is, just as all the rock, folk, hip-hop acts are cooped up in the Best Band Awards competing with each other.

"The definition of popular music has become broader and there exists a great variety of genres between the two ends of the spectrum … . Yet, most people still believe the myth that pop music equals stars," said Chung, adding that even though Lin Sheng-xiang has been a frequent GMA titleholder, local media still describe the accomplished musician as a "dark horse" since they think anyone who is not featured in the entertainment news is a surprise winner.

As the music industry has been experiencing declining album sales, the idea that pop and indie music can be defined and divided in terms of record sales is increasingly becoming obsolete; indie productions often have matching, if not greater, sales to those of pop stars, according to Ho and Chung.

In light of the changes in the industry itself, music professionals believe GMA should adapt itself to the current trend and encourage the burgeoning indie music scene and the flourishing diverse genres that are not geared to the market.

While the nominations are generally considered to reflect musical creativity and talent, the ceremony itself is often denounced as a hollow show for big-ticket pop idols, rather than praised as a music event celebrating the achievement of the nominees. "For musicians, it's an awkward place to be," Chung said.

To avoid the marginalization of non-mainstream musicians, this year's Golden Melody Awards sees the first separation of the award ceremony into traditional and artistic music as a separate event from that of pop music. Held at Liberty Square's Convention Center last Saturday, the starless event nevertheless failed to attract the media's attention, which determines what the general public can and can not have access to. It's a dilemma without a solution if GMA is continuously perceived as a piece of entertainment for the pop audiences.

"If the media clings to its market-oriented logic, then members of the general public can never learn about those music talents that are overlooked ... by the entertainment apparatus," Ho said.

In the eyes of Canadian environmentalist and musician Matthew Lien, the split acts out as a form of segregation that further ghettoizes non-pop musicians and alienates artistic audiences. It's a retrogressive move away from the event's duty to foster a healthy environment for all music and artistic communities to be recognized and received with respect.

"We should go back to the basic question of what the music awards celebrate: the glittering commodities or the music and what is valued and what is not? It's a question that all organizing entities involved in the event need to ask themselves," Lien said.

It is amazing to see how the entertainment apparatus turns a nobody into a star and its efficiency to produce, consume and cash in on its creations is flabbergasting. Right now the machine is working its magic on Aska Yang, its latest product. A local version of China's Li Yuchun, Yang rocketed to stardom after participating in the singing contest One Million Star, on national TV. Two months on, the college student-turned-household name keeps the nation enthralled with no more than a reasonably nice voice and a bent for getting teary eyed over defeated contenders.

Nicknamed cry baby for his tears and caveman for his rugged appearance, Yang has quickly become the gossip rag's new favorite as paparazzi digs out dirt saying the contestant once flunked out of college, subtracted five years from his real age and has developed a predilection for young, pretty assistants.

The show has been accused of deliberately eliminating Yang from the competition so that it can invite him back later in the game, adding a bit of suspense and drama to the show even as the star in the making ensures that gossip fodder is in ample supply.

The Aska craze is predicted to reach a climax in a couple of months as Yang and the nine other finalists, now dubbed as the Million Star Gang, are working on their first compilation album slated to hit the market in the summer. Whether or not the gang are successful products like Hello Kitty or Jolin Tsai, only time will tell.

Meanwhile, [Alan] Luo's past rumored girlfriend Jolin Tsai is spending the same amount of cash on the other side of the planet. Picking up pricey lessons from Kylie Monogue's dance instructor in London, the dance diva's studiousness has been faithfully documented by the record company, lauding the star as a studious young lady who can lead a ordinary life like other Taiwanese students do despite her fame and wealth.

Pop Stop just wants to point out one thing: expensive dance lessons, extravagant shopping and five-star hotel accommodation can hardly constitute a common experience shared by Taiwanese students in foreign countries.

Korean American singer Nicky Lee and Taiwanese pop diva Jolin Tsai took home top honours Saturday at Taiwan's Golden Melody Awards, dubbed the Chinese-language Grammys.

Lee, who has released records in his native South Korea, collected the Best Male Singer award with his R and B album "I'm Your Baby."

"I want to thank my parents, my company and my producer ... I will work even harder from now on," said an emotional Lee.

The category saw the most diverse entries with Lee vying with Taiwan's David Tao and Kenji Wu, Singapore's Wayne Lam, and Malaysia's Gary Chaw.

Taiwanese pop singer Jolin Tsai collected the Best Female Singer prize for her album "Dancing Diva," a fusion of hip hop, reggae, rock and roll, ballads and Middle Eastern music.

She beat big-name rivals such as fellow Taiwanese pop diva A-Mei and veteran Hong Kong songstress Sandy Lam.

"I want to thank those who think it's impossible for me to make it because they keep me going forward ... I also want to thank my fans who have supported me all the way," said Tsai, who kicked off the ceremony with a fiery dance number from her album.

Alternative singer MC Hot Dog was the dark horse of the evening, winning Best Album of the Year.

The Best Song of the Year went to producer singer-songwriter David Tao's ballad "You Are Marrying Me Today," a duet he performed with Jolin Tsai.

Taiwan's R and B prince Jay Chou, although he missed out in the Best Male Singer nominations, won the first-ever Best Single Producer for his hit Rap song "Huo Yuan Chia."

Wu Ching-feng, lead singer of Sodagreen, beat high-profile rivals David Tao and Kenji Wu, to collect the Best Composer prize.

Sodagreen also beat six bands to take home the Best Band award for their second album "Microcosmos."

Therapist-turned-singer Europa Huang defeated ALin, Evan Yo and China's Xian Zi to win the Newcomer award for his debut album "Over the Way."

The night's biggest surprise, however, came when ethnic Hakka singer Lin Sheng xiang refused the Best Hakka Singer and Best Hakka Album prizes.

"I think the Golden Melody awards should be categorised by music types rather than language types ... therefore my production team doesn't attend the ceremony and I decline to take the awards," he told the shocked crowd.

Musicians from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia competed in over 20 categories at the 18th Golden Melody Awards.

Thousands of screaming fans braved the rain last night to catch a glimpse of their favorite music stars walking down the red carpet for the 18th annual Golden Melody Award held at the Taipei Arena.

Taiwan's Jolin Tsai opened the show with an elaborate and "flaming" performance of the hit song from her album "Diva." Variety show queen Momoko Tao and former news anchor turned entertainer Patty Hou teamed up this year to host the event.

One of the most anticipated moments in the event was to see how Hou and Tsai would interact on stage. Hou and Tsai are rumored to be former "love rivals" because they both dated Taiwan's R&B prince Jay Chou. It is believed that Chou cheated on Tsai in order to be with Hou.

While it is indisputable that Tsai is one of the most phenomenal dancers and that her songs are not half bad, her fashion taste, however, has at times seemed somewhat questionable. Last night, Tsai appeared to be shrink-wrapped in what could only be described as purple plastic that accentuated her reportedly surgically enhanced breasts, and cinched her waist to a circumference that made the proportions of her body similar to that of a Barbie doll.

Chou, surprisingly, was not nominated in the Best Mandarin Male singer category, but managed to grab the award for Best Producer for a Single for his song "Huo Yuan Jai."

The Golden Melody Awards, sponsored by the Government Information Office, is the Taiwanese pop music industry's equivalent of the Grammy Awards in the United States. It is held annually to recognize outstanding music achievements in 34 categories in Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka, and any of Taiwan's aboriginal languages.

This year, the lifetime achievement award went posthumously to Chang Hung-yi, the composer of over 400 songs and a four-time Golden Horse winner for his movie soundtracks. His wife accepted the honor on his behalf.

Apparently not all the contenders fancied the golden statue. Best Hakka Singer Lin Sheng-hsiang, who also bagged the Best Hakka album, said he refused to accept the award because he does not believe music should be categorized into different ethnic groups.

"Music transcends all national boundaries, races, and ethnic groups. I do not think it is appropriate to name the categories according to the ethnic groups."

Cheng Ching-yi, one of the most respected Taiwanese singer/songwriters of all times, criticized the event and questioned why no Taiwanese artists were included among the performers.

"This time we had performances of Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Hakka, and aboriginal language songs, but zero Taiwanese songs. If you [the organizers] feel Taiwanese songs are beneath your tastes, then there is no need for any of us from the Taiwanese music industry to come next year."

Award-winning songstress Tsai Chin took the entire audience on a blissful drive down memory lane as she sent chills down their spines with the classics "Unforgettable," "Just like Your Tenderness," and "Who?."

But the oldie goldies did not stop there. Hong Kong's most beloved 70s pop group "The Five Winner" brought the house down with three of their popular songs. Even some youngsters who had never heard of the group before were on their feet, gyrating to the tempo of tambourines and screaming their hearts out.

Nicky Lee, who won the Best Mandarin Male Singer, made history by becoming the first Korean to be nominated and to win in the category.

Taiwan's Jolin Tsai won the award for best female vocalist Saturday in the 18th edition of the Golden Melody Awards _ one of the top honors in the Chinese-language music industry _ edging out three homegrown rivals and a pair of competitors from nearby Southeast Asia.
Other big winners included Korean-Chinese Lee Chiu-je for best male singer, "Wake Up" for album of the year, and "Beautiful" for song of the year.

Tsai, often called "boy killer" by the local media, is sometimes referred to as Taiwan's Britney Spears because of her appeal to the island's teenage market.

In accepting her award, Tsai waved to hundreds of fans in the audience in a Taipei hall and expressed her gratitude.

In the best male vocalist category, Lee, a relative unknown, won for "Baby It's Me."

He beat out Singaporean Lin Jun Jie, Malaysia's Gary Cao Ge and Taiwan's David Tao, who sang song-of-the-year winner "Beautiful."

"Wake Up" overcame tough competition from "All I Want" and "Little Universe" to prevail in the album-of-the-year category.

Taiwan pop diva Jolin Tsai was the biggest winner at the 18th Golden Melody Awards on Saturday, dubbed the Chinese-language Grammys.

Jolin Tsai was awarded Most Popular Female Singer and Best Mandarin Female Singer, for her album "Dancing Diva," a fusion of hip hop, reggae, rock and roll, ballads and Middle Eastern music.

"I want to thank those who think it's impossible for me to make it because they keep me going forward ... I also want to thank my fans who have supported me all the way," said an emotional Jolin Tsai.

The Most Popular Male Singer award went to Taiwan singer Show Luo, who signed on with the recording company EMI in May and is preparing for a new album. The Best Mandarin Male Singer was Korean American singer Nicky Lee for his R and B album "I'm Your Baby."

Producer-singer-songwriter David Tao collected the Best Song of the Year award for his ballad "You Are Marrying Me Today," a duet he performed with Jolin Tsai.

Taiwan pop king Jay Chou, although he missed out in the Best Mandarin Male Singer nominations, won the first-ever Best Single Producer award for his hit Rap song "Huo Yuan Chia," the theme song for a martial-arts film.

Alternatives beat out the mainstream

The Golden Melody Awards have gradually been shifting from their focus on the big stars, and last night's show served to confirm this trend

In an evening dominated by alternative acts, Jay Chou picked up his award for Best Single Producer, but it was independents who won big. Folk rock outfit Sodagreen won the coveted Best Band award, but even in the prestige categories such as Best Producer, independents dominated. And even in categories that are the exclusive realm of the big labels there were upsets, with South Korean Nicky Lee beating out six-time nominee David Tao for the best male Mandarin singer.

The 18th Golden Melody Awards, the music industry's night of backslapping and mutual congratulation, took place last night at the Taipei Arena. The annual event gives out awards to professionals making music in Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka and Taiwan's Aboriginal languages. This year, the nominees were drawn from record-breaking 8,103 entries by a 33-member panel of judges.

Despite afternoon showers thousands of teenagers and groupies laid siege to the stadium to ensure a good view, despite the absences of heavyweight pop idols such as Jay Chou and David Tao.

In this less than star-studded event, the two hosts, Momko Tao and Patty Hou wearing NT$80 millions worth of jewelry, where the brightest stars on the red carpet dominated by alternative musicians and indie bands.

This year, the awards for artistic and traditional music were held earlier in the month, ensuring that the party last night went more smoothly with the absence of the non-pop crowd, who always looked so out of place among the glitterati.

Jolin Tsai picked up Best Female Mandarin Singer this year

Huang Chien-wei, a college student whose folk debut Over the Way is inspired from the tranquil island life and rural landscapes, picked up the award for Best Newcomer early in the ceremony, setting the tone for what was to follow.

Lin Sheng-xiang, considered by many as one of Taiwan's most original musicians, was awarded Best Hakka Singer and Best Hakka Album for Planting Trees. Lin used his acceptance speech to refuse the awards to signify his disapproval of the language-based categorizations used for the Golden Melody Awards. He announced that he would donate the prize money to four community groups working with Taiwan's agricultural communities, and expressed his support for the so called "rice bomber" Yang Ju-men. "It is music that gathers us here, not languages. So the event's subject should be the musical vocabulary rather than linguistic differences," Yang said.

Always merging his music with sociopolitical messages, Lin has been a frequent GMA winner ever since the now disbanded Labor Exchange that was awarded major honors in 2000 and 2002. In 2005, Sheng Xiang and Water 3, Lin's music project with his long-term partner Zhong Yong-feng won Best Band, Best Hakka Album and Best Lyricist with Getting Dark that turns a sober gaze at globalization that sweeps the world.

In the Best Singing Group category, popular pub duo Hao-en and Puyuma songstress Jiajia took the trophy. The duo, breaking away from the stereotypes of Aboriginal music, have achieved considerable success on the pub circuit with their contemporary compositions fused with blues jazz, gospel and traditional folk music. (They are nominated for Best Mandarin Album, Best Singing Group, Best Producer and Best Composer). Folk rock outfit Soda Green picked up the highly coveted Best Band award. Having released four singles and two albums in two-years, Sodagreen had built up an audience base with campus tours and pub gigs and their self-titled debut album was nominated for the Best Composer and Best Band awards at last year's Golden Melody Awards. Formed by the six members during college, the folk rock band Sodagreen was a campus music luminary at the National Chengchi University and frequent winner for the school's annual music competition. Their career breakthrough quickly came in 2004 when the band took the jury award at Hohaiyan Rock Festival and discovered by musician and producer Lin Wei-tse.

In the Taiwanese music category, five-time nominee Shih Wen-bin picked up best male singer and taime prototype Jeannie Hsieh won best female.

One of last night's biggest surprises of last night came when last year's Best Band winner Chairman beat off Judy Chiang, the uncontested reigning queen of Taiwanese-language music and walked home with the Best Taiwanese-language Album. "We never thought we would win and our first reaction was like the title of the album "Jin Ei Ah Gey Ei" [meaning "you're kidding" in Taiwanese]," said the band backstage.

At the end of the evening, the prestige categories offered few surprises, as Jolin Tsai finally won a long-overdue award for best female mandarin singer, and the evening finished on a slight note of confusion when MC Hotdog got the Best Album award, which may simply have been done to make sure that established artists did not completely disappear under the landslide of independent artists.

Leak takes wind out of tourism bureau surprise

When Tourism Bureau Director-General Janice Lai was asked two weeks ago who would replace pop diva Chang Huei-mei, or A-mei, as the new spokesperson to help draw tourists from Southeast Asia, Lai chose to remain silent.

"Allow me to keep it a secret for now," she told reporters at the time. "Let me just say that it is going to be a male entertainer and a female singer. I promise it will be a huge surprise!"

But what was meant to be a surprise turned into an unexpected cat-out-of-bag incident. Lai was upset yesterday to find out that local media had unveiled the "secret" before she did.

A report in the Chinese-language Apple Daily yesterday said that Jolin Tsai, who won the Golden Melody Award for best female Mandarin pop singer last week, has been selected to be the bureau's new tourism spokesperson in Southeast Asia.

The report also mentioned that Tsai and film director Wu Nien-jen, another new spokesperson, would participate in promotional events and activities organized by the Tourism Bureau.

It also said that the bureau would pay Tsai NT$8 million (US$242,400) per year for the deal.

The bureau's contract with A-mei ended this year. During the past three years, the diva participated in tourism-related promotional events in Southeast Asia, from meeting with fans to leading them on an around-the-nation tour.

The momentum A-mei generated encouraged the Tourism Bureau to consider choosing another popular singer to be the new spokesperson this year.

Lai ordered her staff yesterday to investigate the leak and find out why the news was released to the media before the scheduled date, which was today.

The incident was reminiscent of the Golden Melody Awards' problems, as both events have had their lists of winners leaked to the media before the organizer could make an official announcement.

To increase tourism each year, the bureau has recruited popular idols as part of tourism promotion package. Last week, it announced that the boy-band F4 had become the bureau's emissaries in Japan and South Korea.

The Tourism Bureau formally named pop singer Jolin Tsai and film director Wu Nien-jen as the nation's next tourism ambassadors for the Southeast Asian region yesterday, two days after a leak embarrassed the bureau.

Bureau Director-General Janice Lai had wanted to keep the names a secret when she was first asked by reporters about the matter two weeks ago, but the Chinese-language Apple Daily named the pair in a report on Wednesday.

Tsai and Wu replace pop singer Chang Huei-mei, who had been tourism ambassador for three years.

That choice proved to be a success, with the number of tourists visiting Taiwan from Southeast Asia increasing by an average 10 percent annually over the period, Lai said.

"The number of tourists from the [Southeast Asian] region increased from 630,000 in 2004 to 760,000 in 2006, which was an average 10 percent annual increase," Lai told a press conference yesterday.

The success encouraged the bureau to continue the campaign, she said.

"Wu represents the more in-depth values behind traveling such as culture and tradition, while Tsai stands for Taiwan's pop culture and modernity," Lai said. "While they each stand for something poles apart, they also represent the diversity of Taiwan."

Campaign materials that Wu and Tsai will participate in include TV commercials and newspaper advertisements in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Malaysia, she said.

In addition, Wu will be a tour guide on selected tour packages from Malaysia, while the bureau will also offer package tours that include tickets to Tsai's concerts, Lai said.

"We hope to increase the number of tourists by at least 7 percent in the coming year," she said.

At the autograph session, there was also a final competition for her fans to imitate her dance, there were 3 finalists in total, Jolin herself and her dance teacher being the judges.

蔡依林一聽周杰倫就尖叫，雖然他自曝兩人還是會熱線聯絡、也不介意被她「推下去」，Jolin昨天還是急忙閃避「Jay話題」，「感情的事，很難控制。」
Jolin screams when hounded by the reporters with questions about Jay, although he revealed that they still keep in contact and does not mind being "pushed down"[from the first place in terms of sales] by her, Jolin was still trying her best to avoid the 'Jay topic' and says that affairs of the heart are hard to control.
Jolin急忙撇清兩人「熱線」的印象，「是很偶爾，才會電話聯絡，聊工作上的事。」周杰倫前天說，Jolin是很努力、很拚命的人，有一天可能會「推下他」，她笑說：「所以我會送努力人的DVD給他。」這是不是意味著有可能舊情復燃？她尖叫：「啊……扯遠了。」她說，學舞、減肥，都是她可以努力的事，但感情不是。
Jolin was anxious to clear the air about their rumours and the impression that they often chat on the phone, "We do talk on the phone about our work and life but it's very occasionally." Jay said two days ago, Jolin is a very hardworking person, maybe one day he might be "pushed down" by her, she laughed and said: "That's why i will give him my dvd as this is a dvd of a hardworking person." When asked if they will reconcile? She screamed and said: "Ah...This is getting out of hand." She says, dancing, slimming are things that she can work ahrd on but not love and rumours.
蔡依林這幾天都為周六的金曲演出作準備，因新訂製服裝披披掛掛，不太好表現，她自己只專心準備演出，連星光大道要和誰一起走都不知道，禮服也尚未決定。
Jolin is busy with rehearsals of her performance for this year's golden melody awards but is always interrupted by many invitations from many famous brands to try on their gowns for the award ceremony this saturday, she expresses that she ahs not yet decided on the gown to wear and who to walk with on the red carpet.

時尚品牌今年鎖定頭牌是天后蔡依林，包括了凡賽斯、Prada、Dolce & Gabbana等多家品牌，都跳過大中華區找禮服的慣例，直接去米蘭及巴黎總公司調從未曝光的數十萬元禮服，給足天后面子。
Fashion brands targets Pop Queen Jolin this year, they include Prada, Dolce & Gabbana etc. All these brands specially import their gowns from overseas branch offices such as those in paris and milan, all the imported gowns are not yet being exposed to the world and cost a bomb, giving the pop queen alot of priority and face.
昨天出席「地才」DVD造勢活動的蔡依林坦承，近日她瘋狂試衣，手腳也遭衣服刮傷，試穿的衣服雖多，要修改的部分也多，但仍未決定要走火辣、性感或優雅路線。

Another focus of this year's gma is Patty. This time round, she hands herself to her boss to decide what kind of outfit she will don, many fashion brands have sent their gowns over for her too, even John Galliano specially sent his deisgns to taiwan.
除了星光幫、蔡依林、侯佩岑，以及天后阿妹、張韶涵等少數入圍者有時尚品牌強力支援，今年多數明星借衣服難度大為提升，因為金曲獎時間今年強碰上海電影節，時尚品牌幾乎都被要求全力支援上海場，也使得台灣禮服可試穿的少得可憐，藝人若沒有一定知名度，根本借不到。

Channel V doesn't look much like a music channel these days. Spawned by MTV, its Oedipal relationship with the king of music videos has naturally been a difficult one. It appears to have been resolved in Taiwan by doing something different. It's market is the same, teenagers, but instead of established artists strutting their stuff in endlessly looped photo shoots, Channel V has rediscovered the variety show.

The debonair Blackie hosts Blackie's Teenage Club and manages to be a sexy kind of headmaster to a group of teenage girls without coming off as a pervert. The girls meet celebrities, show off their talents and occasionally release a record or appear at concerts. The kicker is the girls get their big chance to appear on the show but can also be voted off, so it's like an evolving popularity contest. This format has proved so popular, especially among lads in search of fresh eye candy, that Blackie's rumored love interest Fan Wei-chi was tapped last year to produce a show for salivating laddettes as well.

Muofan Bang Bang Tang is a play on words, combining the characters for model, the show's presenter, good and candy on a stick. It features pretty boys with sharp haircuts who perform skits or short song-and-dance routines. They wear pink and purple, Burberry-type tank tops, or shirts and ties. A recent program had S.H.E appearing on the show. Ella did her tomboy act and the Lollipop gang did their cute impressions, down to the hao ke-ai-you inflections previously reserved for girls.

At the fruit tea sponsored Channel V concert a few weeks ago called Le Party (after Le Tea company that sponsored it) Bang Bang Tang was arguably the hit of the night, despite the presence of established stars such as Jolin Tsai and Wang Lee-hom. After an execrable performance from Blackie's Teenage Club Beauties, which included the immortal line "Smile, smile, shiny kiss, waiting for your answer" - even bad Elvis impersonators would have looked good. The Bang Bang Tang boys, however, were energetic, rapped, carried a tune ... and that's enough talent to make anyone happy these days.

For the past few weekends on Channel V we have had repeats of Le Party and endless reruns of Blackie's show. On Saturday and Sunday there were seven chances each day to see the same program. This must be a record. Fourteen opportunities over 48 hours to see identical hour-long programs. It's the same, cheap story of product overload for Bang Bang Tang. The Colorful Lollipop EP comes with a DVD and "footage of the boys' 44 autograph sessions and 99 days of recording and promotion, and self-recorded behind-the-scenes footage." The two Channel V groups are marketing fruit teas (for Le Tea) and Artificial Life is releasing mobile games centered on the two shows. Their dedicated Web site http://www.woo.com.tw/ is said to be generating an average of 28 million page views per month.

Like it or not this is the future: democratic entertainment. Marketing is everything and a celebrity-obsessed culture will provide new faces that appear endlessly on our screens until we're so sick of them they're voted off. We get what we deserve.
