Korean fans enjoy free admission to F4 Fans Meeting

Popular Taiwanese band F4 is going to hold a large-scale International Fans Meeting at the General Stadium of Taiwan University on the 22nd. This fans meeting is organized by the Taiwan Tourist Bureau.

This event is aimed at promoting Taiwan Tourism. F4, who seldom get together, will only invite Korean and Japanese fans to this extra-ordinary concert, which includes singing, dancing, sincere talks and inter-reactions.

Taiwan Bureau specially offers free admission tickets that worth $60,000 won to Korean fans.

Interested fans only need to purchase the 2-day-1-night or 3-day-2-nights package tour designated for the fans meeting event from couple specified travel agencies so as to enjoy this free admission.

Individuals will obtain an admission exchange coupon by presenting passport and Taiwan round trip flight ticket with event date (22nd) as the traveling date to the Taiwan Tourist Bureau office at Incheon.

On arrival at Taiwan Tao Yuan International Airport, trade this exchange coupon for the event admission ticket at the Tourist Service Center located in the departure hall.

According to Taiwan Tourist Bureau’s plan, other than this fans meeting, F4 will film commercial ads and an idol drama (25 episodes about 60-minute each) with tourist attractions as the background. They will also issue “Tour of Hope” passport along with souvenirs like T-shirts, notebooks, passport covers, etc. Ample tourist promotional activities are about to run.

ROMANTIC GETAWAY: The Northeast Coast has become a `must-see' destination for Hong Kong couples visiting Taiwan to get pre-wedding glamour photos taken

Kenting, the Love River in Kaohsiung and the Shin Kong Chao Feng Ranch and Resort in Hualien have been voted as the top three possible settings for a romantic television series that will help promote Taiwan to the world, the nation's tourism bureau said yesterday.

The bureau launched an online survey in February to select an ideal setting for a romantic series called Wish to See You in Taiwan, which will be financed by the tourism bureau and will feature popular boy band F4.

The bureau, as the sole financer, has decided the TV series will be a romantic comedy featuring scenic spots that effectively promote Taiwan's characteristics.

The survey ended on the 15th of last month with hundreds of responses from domestic and overseas participants.

The survey attracted more than 450,000 visitors to its Web site and 648 proposed scenic spots.

In addition to the top three spots, some suggested that the settings include night markets, which would give viewers of the show a glimpse of tasty local foods.

Anping Tree House in Tainan County and some coffee houses known for their unusual interior design were also on the list of favorites.

Fans of F4 have also submitted ideas to the TV program's designers.

A Japanese woman wrote in an e-mail that she had fallen in love with Taiwan because of F4 and had since visited the country repeatedly. Like many tourists, she visited Taipei 101 and Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. However, she recommended using Longshan Temple as a setting in the TV series, noting that the temple is designated as a top-rated national historical site. The devoted F4 fan said she had visited the temple on each of her trips to Taiwan.

Meanwhile, the bureau's campaign to attract more international tourists by promoting niche tourism, which lets tourists explore one particular aspect of a country, has proven effective. It noted this week that the nation's Northeast Coast had become a popular destination for couples engaged to be married.

A statement from the bureau's national scenic area administration in the northeast coast said that approximately 200 couples came to Taiwan from Hong Kong each month to have pre-wedding photos taken. Most of the couples said the Northeast Coast was a must-visit destination.

Around the coastal area, Yeliou Park, Laumei Park and Juming Museum are among the most popular sites for wedding photos.

"They [couples from Hong Kong] come because Taiwan offers quality wedding photos and plenty of beautiful scenery as a backdrop. And the service is delivered efficiently and at a relatively reasonable price," the statement said.

Fans Can Meet Taiwanese Band

The Korean office of Taiwan Tourism Bureau distributes free ticket to a fan meeting of Taiwanese boy band F4.

F4, goodwill ambassador to promote Taiwan tourism to the rest of Asia, will hold an international fan meeting for Korean and Japanese fans at Taiwan University in Taipei on April 22.

The tourism bureau provides the fan meeting tickets, which costs around 60,000 won, for free. Ten travel agencies have come up with one-night or two-night tour programs that include the fan meeting.

Those who do not want to buy the package programs can also take part in the meeting. They will be given a coupon of the event if they visit the tourism bureau’s Seoul office with round-trip flight ticket and passport that can prove they will be staying in Taiwan on the day of the fan meeting.

The coupon can be exchanged into the event admission ticket when submitted to visitor information center at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

Seven Chinese Movies to Enter Cannes Race in May

China Film Group has selected six Chinese movies for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival that is due to show up in mid May. The candidate Chinese movies include "The Knot", "Tokyo Trial" ,"Love in The City" and three others.

May 16th, this year marks the 60th anniversary of Cannes Film Festival, which is expected to boast a more star-studded lineup and film competitors.

The high-profile Chinese actor-turned-director Jiang Wen's latest movie "The Sun Still Rises" will also enter the Cannes' race as an individual applicant via Hong Kong's Emperor Group. The movie has already garnered an official pass from China's film authority to screen in cinemas. The director is now on busy post-production in France.

A senior manager surnamed Zhou from China's Film Promotion International told Shanghai Youth Daily that the six officially recommended movies are good both in terms of box office takings and reputation. They should represent the quality of contemporary Chinese movies.

Organizer of the Cannes Film Festival has released its first batch of guest list which well include Chinese star actress Gong Li.

Moreover, Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai's first English language movie "My Blueberry Night" is expected to be the opening film at the festival.

The documentary "A Great Master Recaptured" about Chinese opera master Mei Lanfang will also be screened during film festival, along with other Chinese movies.

China's Film Promotion International will put up a big exhibition at the film festival to promote Chinese movies. Some 50 bosses of China's film companies will also be along to get a chance in meeting their overseas buyers.

The Tokyo Trial

The Tokyo Trial is the first of what is likely to be a long line of films dealing with Japanese wartime aggression, with a number of similarly themed productions waiting in the wings. The film was directed by the Mainland Chinese Gao Qunshu and boasts an all-star cast including popster Ken Chu and Kelly Lin, along with more seasoned actors such as Damian Lau, Kenneth Tsang Kong, and the legendary Eric Tsang.

The plot focuses on the real life story of the military tribunal which was held in 1946 to consider the case of a number of Japanese war criminals, following in particular the story of the Chinese judge Mei Ruyi (played by Damien Lau in suitably dignified fashion) as he battles for justice. While he struggles in the courtroom, a Chinese journalist (Ken Chu) attempts to reconcile with his Japanese girlfriend (Kelly Lin ), facing hostility from her family and friends, all of whom have been affected by the war in one way or another.

Interestingly, The Tokyo Trial focuses not so much on the acts committed by the Japanese during and prior to the Second World War, but on their subsequent refusal to admit to having done anything wrong. As such, most of the film's drama and outrage stem from the testimony of the accused and their justifications for their crimes, which sees them not only denying all of the charges against them but claiming to have been on the side of right. Indeed, the Japanese defense lawyer emerges as much a villain as his clients, trying various dirty tricks to cause outrage and confusion in the courtroom and attempting to distort the truth and provoke witnesses in a truly twisted fashion. This, along with some thoughtful commentary on the effects of the war on the Japanese psyche, gives the film a sense of contemporary relevance, obviously mirroring the on-going reluctance of the Japanese government to answer to the country's aggressive past.

Despite depicting such atrocious behaviour, the film is surprisingly balanced, and never demonises the Japanese people as a whole, noting that their soldiers in China were forbidden from contacting home in order to prevent word of the atrocities from leaking out, and laying the blame squarely at the feet of the ruling powers. Away from the courtroom, the Japanese characters are a mixed group, with many showing guilt and regret, and although some still harbour fanatical anti-Chinese sentiment, this is clearly shown as being a result of government brainwashing. As a result, the film never comes across as a simple propaganda piece, and is all the more powerful for it.

As a film, The Tokyo Trial is procedural in the extreme, being rigidly structured around the progression of the case, though thankfully it is never too dry, with director Gao quite obviously aiming for a glossy blockbuster feel. This does make for a rather strange mix at times, with archive wartime footage sitting alongside an endless barrage of sweeping shots of the courtroom accompanied by booming dramatic music. This leaves the film as feeling both grounded and authentic, yet at the same time forced, especially during the scenes away from the trial, which are largely ineffective, being laden with symbolism in a clumsy and cheap manner. Inevitably, the film also suffers from some pretty poor acting from the Western members of the cast, who deliver the stilted dialogue in frequently unconvincing fashion and rob the proceedings of some dramatic weight. Although this was probably inevitable with the film being unlikely to attract top Western acting talent, for a comparatively big budget film shot largely in the English language, more effort certainly could have been made.

Despite this distraction, The Tokyo Trial remains powerful and moving, though it has to be said that this is mainly due to the underlying story rather than the efforts of the film itself. Still, although it is likely to be overshadowed by later films on the subject, it does offer an interesting and measured take on the subject and provides an important insight into events which still sadly continue to plague Asian politics in modern times.
