Because they are promoting travel tours, theTraffic Bureau and Tourism Office will release an idol drama, and managements each recommended their idol stars for the project. Having already verified the details, F4 management said that the F4 handsome guys will star in that drama. Male lead Jerry Yan will portray a boy dancer instructor.

According to sources, besides proposing the advantages of F4, "Ke mi rhu zhi" and GTV also joined in at the Tourism Office proposal of hiring Da S, and Xiao Zhu Luo Zhi Xiang as the male-female lead to present Taiwan's tourist spots, like the form of "Meteor Garden" male-female couple. GTV also plans to set up leading lady Da S to personally go to the kitchen and fry rice. But Da S and Xiao Zhu Gua are not overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Finally, the Tourism office had its eye on the Japanese and Korean market, and chose the F4 members who swept all-Asia.

Although Jerry is not the best dancer among F4, yet the drama plot will portray him as a boy dance instructor. Jerry's manager Jing Yi Peng also said that they haven't seen the script yet and not clear with the details. He merely smiled and said, "He will not mind dancing. In the concert he also had dance numbers. But if it is a street dance, it's a whole new challenge again."

GTV Planning Department then expressed that they really favored the proposal of the Tourism Office. But the leading lady has only Da S, and that other details have not been discussed and selection is not yet completed.

Producer Ke Mi Rui Zhi revealed that details had been recently been discussed with the Tourism Office. According to indicators, the title and plot has not been determined yet. Tourism office expressed that they will not intervene with the plot, because the producers will be the ones to handle that, and they only required that the drama must contain a certain scale of Taiwan's famous scenic spots.

"The Tokyo Trial" opens

BEIJING, Sept. 1 -- "The Tokyo Trial," a historical film recounting the trial of top Japanese war criminals at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East 60 years ago, opens nationwide Friday. At media previews this week in Shenzhen, Beijing and Shanghai, the film won high praise from both audiences and critics.

The movie focuses on the trial of 28 Japanese war criminals at the end of World War II in 1946 and depicts how the eloquent Mei Ruao, a Chinese judge, charged the Japanese for war crimes, maintaining China's dignity on the international stage.

"This part of history has been submerged for too long and many people don't know the facts. Even when I got the script, my impression of this part of history was a few words like 'Tokyo trial,' and 'Hideki Tojo.' To show the trial and to tell people what really happened at the trial is of great importance," said director Gao Shuqun.

In fact, the Tokyo trial was the biggest international trial in history, even larger than the Nuremberg trials. It lasted two and a half years, from May 1946 to November 1948. During 818 public sessions, trial records reached 48,000 pages; and 419 witnesses gave testimony.

The movie version is Gao's feature film debut after gaining a reputation for directing realistic TV dramas. Some music critics said the music in the movie was reminiscent of "Schindler's List." The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television censors reportedly approved the film without cuts, and some critics say the movie is likely to be the latest dark horse success since "Crazy Stone."

"The most important thing about the movie is that it's true to history," said Gao. "That Mei insisted on sentencing criminals to death is true. The dialogue between Mei and war criminal Hideki Tojo is the original based on the trial record. The courtroom and the Japanese restaurants are replications of the real ones. Even the tiles used for the buildings are made with Japanese technology. What we're trying to do is to show the historical accuracy and legal authenticity," he added.

However, Zhang Peiji, who went through the trial as an assistant to one of the prosecutors, said some details of the film were inaccurate.

He said the clothes war criminals wore were not suits but army uniforms. In the movie, Chinese judges and prosecutors talk to each other before and after the trial. Zhang said the rule was that they were not allowed to talk in private.

The mainstream film attracted Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland stars, including Kenneth Tsang, Eric Tsang, Damian Lau, Ying Da, heartthrob Ken Zhu and Kelly Lin.

The movie also attracted U.S. and Japanese actors. Gao said he had thought Japanese actors would turn down the opportunity to perform in this historical movie, but they accepted the plot and delivered professional performances. About 80 percent of the dialogue is in English and Japanese.

With an investment of 30 million yuan (US$3.75 million), Gao said Japanese distributors have expressed interest in buying the screening rights for Japan.

When Shin Hyesung was being interviewed from the Herald, he said, "After the release of my second solo album next year, I will release S's second album with Kangta and Lee Jee Hoon. There is a possibility that we will have a group song with F4." Back in May, Kangta and F4's Vanness formed a group called 'Kangta & Vanness'. The chase for The Hospital location spots brought to the Wu Fen Port treasure hunt and so the Information Office will now shoot idol dramas, make Taiwan tour packages, and promote in Korean and Japanese TV channels

To attract Japanese young tourists to come to Taiwan, the Tourism Office also prepared a "TV Wave" attack to release an F4 lead idol drama. The recent hot and famous drama "The Hospital" already attracted many Japanese girls to travel to Taiwan, and that travel agencies came up with "The Hospital Tour" to sell to Japan. Among the foreign tourists, Japanese are the biggest clients, numbering to millions who broke through last year.

Personal travel aides for Japanese young tourists are also increasing. Travel consultants at the Taipei bus station and Taipei Railway’s Tour Services Center said that 2 to 30 Japanese young ladies come everyday. Earlier, young couples came to ask directions to the Taipei subway, Wu Fen Port and the LV Special Sale Shop. There were even others who asked for the filming locations of the idol drama “The Hospital”. These tourists and the traditional tourist groups are completely different.

The Hospital was first aired last August 15. A drama staff revealed that a big group of about 300 Japanese fans specially came to Taiwan for its Preview Screening, and had also arranged for a 5-day travel tour.

According to Yang Ming Productions, in order that the Japanese fans can “feel the place” they often go to one of the three Taipei General Hospitals entrance to have some quick snapshots as souvenir. Even if Jerry would only “look around for some fresh water” to be used for his concert, Japanese fans would travel far to follow it.

A travel agent said that they are in the process of planning the travel packages for “The Hospital Tour.”

This year, the Tourism office will invest $85 million budget to hit the filming of the F4 idol drama, with about 20 to 25 episodes. It will include Taiwan’s 8 biggest scenic spots and its 4 major features, to be promoted in the major Japanese and Korean TV channels.

"Tokyo Trial" - A Movie No Chinese Should Miss

The historical Chinese movie "Tokyo Trial" debuted in movie theaters across China last Friday. It recounts the trial of top Japanese war criminals at the International Military tribunal for the Far East nearly 60 years ago. This is the first time that China has brought this topic to the silver screen. The movie's accurate rendering of history and its fine artistry has won it wide acclaim. Some even call it a movie no Chinese should miss, even if it is not easy viewing. Our reporter XXX brings us the details.

The Tokyo Trial took place after World War II ended. It lasted two and a half years, from May 1946 to November 1948, about half a year after the start of the Nuremberg Trials in Europe. All Japanese Class-A war criminals were tried by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East in Tokyo. The prosecution team was made up of justices from 11 Allied nations. Seven of the war criminals were hanged after the trial, including Hideki Tojo, the prime minister of Japan during the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii in 1941.

This is not an easy part of history to remake into a movie. It could have easily become a dry documentary. Fortunately, the movie is anything but dull. It not only accurately recounts what happened during that trial, but also successfully profiles a Chinese judge who maintained China's dignity and status on the international stage with his patriotism and wit. It lays bare the untold sufferings of the Chinese people during the Japanese Aggression in the 1930s and 40s, but also reveals the pains the war brought to Japanese civilians through the sufferings of an ordinary Japanese family.

Director Gao Qunshu says through the movie, he wants to tell people the truth about the trial and invite them to ponder war and conflicts.

"Some people try to distort the facts about the Tokyo Trial and that part of history. However, through investigating historical documents and diaries of those who participated the trial, one will learn both the procedures of the trial and the method in which the trial was conducted were all compatible with international law. That means the trial was fair. The movie will help correct some of the intentional distortions of history made by some people. In the meantime, it is also a contemplation on war. What we want to say through the movie is regardless of whether a war is just or unjust, it is the general public who always suffers the most. War can only bring death and destruction. We are against war and long for everlasting peace."

Gao Qunshu says to research authentic historical scenes, he referred to numerous copies of firsthand footage of the trial, including varied video versions shot by the Japanese and Dutch press. He found a valuable trial diary in Japan, which recounts its heated debates. As a result, in the movie, even the details of the actors' costumes and gestures at the tribunal strictly follow historical evidence. Ninety percent of the movie was shot in English and Japanese as it was in the trial.

In addition, a lot of historical footage of the atrocities the Japanese committed during its aggression of China were also woven into the movie, including the Nanjing Massacre in 1937. During the Tokyo trial, the massacre was treated as one unique example of the atrocities the Japanese army committed in Asia. Numerous eyewitness accounts of the massacre were provided by Chinese civilian survivors. Yet, even today, the horrific events have never been emphasized in Japanese history textbooks.

The movie's cast is star-studded. It includes several veteran actors and actresses from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The film also involved Japanese, American and Canadian actors.

Renowned Hong Kong actor Damian Lau starred as Mei Ruao, the only Chinese judge among the 11 at the tribunal. In the movie, the trial was mainly recounted through him. In history, he was an eloquent and patriotic man who received an overseas education and could speak fluent English. Although Damian Lau has created numerous glorious images of judges during his acting career, he found the role as Mei Ruao the most challenging.

"Mei Ruao is a person with a strong sense of ethics and national pride. He represented his country at a significant international affair. He had to shoulder great responsibility as well as a lot of pressure. If he did not harbor strong emotions and a patriotic heart within his bosom, he could hardly successfully overcome the many difficulties before him and fulfill the mission given by the country. He was cool-headed and witty throughout the trial. I tried to master his inner world through these aspects. I really respect him."

Another veteran Hong Kong actor, Kenneth Tseng, played one of the two Chinese prosecutors, Xiang Zhejun, who waged heated debate with the Japanese war criminals and their lawyers. In the end, he succeeded in bringing them to justice.

Talking about his role, the veteran actor, who has starred in numerous Hollywood movies, expressed his respect to his own role.

"He tried hard to bring the war criminals their due punishment. He was an ardent patriotic. I really respect him."

So far the movie has received wide acclaim from historians and international law experts, as well as those in the movie industry. In addition, owing to its prime historical value, the China National Film Museum and Nanjing Massacre Museum also have plans to include the film in their collections.

Commercially, six main theater chains in China have joined for the first time to screen this film. Several Japanese cinema chains have also bought the rights to distribute it overseas.

Kang Xuejun, manager of the Star City Cinema in downtown Beijing's Oriental Plaza, gives us more information about the movie at his cinema.

"The movie's been publicly shown at our movie theater since Friday, like everywhere else in Beijing. Shanghai began screening it half a month earlier. The feedback is rather good. I've watched the movie. The actors' performances are good. I believe a lot of audiences will be interested in the subject because we have very few movies on the same subject. The movie will run in our theater until next month."

So far, there are no reports on the movie's box office returns. However, some worry one potential drawback for domestic viewers might be the heavy concentration of foreign-language conversations in the movie.

Nonetheless, many believe this movie is worthy for all Chinese to watch. Here's Damian Lau, who played the major role of the judge.

"I hope more young people will watch this movie. I hope they can learn from this part of history that regardless of what country they come from, all human beings should work hard to make themselves outstanding. A person should try to bring honor to his or her country and people."

Famous Taiwan heartthrob Ken Zhu, who plays the role of a Chinese journalist in the movie, echoed his sentiments.

"Maybe this movie is not an entertaining film, but it's a movie that all Chinese should watch because it retells historical facts all Chinese should know."

Chinese people are not the only ones who should watch it. Japanese people should as well. A recent survey shows 70 percent of Japanese adults don't know any details about the Tokyo Trial, while 19 percent haven't even heard of it.

Let's remember director Gao Qunshu's words. This movie is a call for peace, yet history should never be forgotten.

Film on trial of Japanese WWII war criminals debuts to acclaim

BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese director has released a new film -- to critical acclaim in China -- which he claims will redress misrepresentations of Japanese war crimes during World War II.

"Tokyo Trial" recounts the court proceedings against 28 top Japanese war criminals at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East after the war.

Director Gao Qunshu claimed it accurately portrays how a Chinese judge swayed opinion on the international panel of 11 judges to narrowly avert a "miscarriage of justice".

The judges -- from China, the United States, Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and the Philippines -- ended more than two years of proceedings with a close division over sentencing.

However, Chinese judge Mei Ru'ao gave the last speech charging the criminals with stealing Chinese resources and crimes against humanity, securing a majority of six for death penalties for the seven class A war criminals, including Hideki Tojo, Kenji Doihara and Koki Hirota.

"The film reviews the war as well as those responsible. The Chinese judges averted a shameful miscarriage of justice," Gao said.

"I aim to tell the incontrovertible truth of history," he added.

Tokyo Trial comes 23 years after the making of "Tokyo Saiban" by Japanese director Masaki Kobayashi, which was criticized for misrepresenting history.

In a 1985 review of the Japanese version, New York Times film critic Drew Middleton wrote: "(The movie) is visually satisfying, but historically empty. Masaki Kobayashi, the director, himself a prisoner of war, has interspersed the trial scenes with bits from World War II archives that, granted the importance of the trial itself, seem largely irrelevant.

"Moreover we get little about Japanese atrocities such as the Bataan death march or the Nanjing massacres after the Japanese Army took that city in its campaign against China. We do get the atom bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The message, to this reviewer, was that the West was worse than the East in terms of atrocities."

It's an opinion shared by septuagenarian Chinese director Xie Jin. "The movie totally confounded right and wrong."

However, Xie, who was honored last year with a lifetime achievement Golden Rooster in the country's premier film awards, said Tokyo Trial was the first film he had paid to watch in more than a decade.

"It's praiseworthy for the true representation of history. I hope both Chinese and Japanese audiences can watch it, because too many young people don't know this period of history," he said.

A poll published by Asahi Shimbun newspaper on May 2 showed 70 percent of Japanese respondents did not know of the content of the Tokyo Trial, and 17 percent had never even heard of the trial. Ten percent of respondents aged 20 to 30 knew of the trial's content.

"It's a pity that a film representing the true history of the Tokyo Trial appeared 60 years after the establishment of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, while its counterpart on the Nuremberg Trial, 'Judgment at Nuremberg' (directed by Stanley Kramer) was finished in 1961," said Ling Yan, a Chinese jurist with The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and professor of the China University of Political Science and Law.

The history of the Nazi Holocaust of European Jews during World War II was widely known and agreed thanks to the Jewish people maintaining awareness. The Chinese people should also learn to prevent others denying history, said Lin Xiaoguang, a researcher with the Party History Research Center of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee.

"History education in school, though highly regarded by the government and society, is not enough. We must make full use of mass media to let more people know the history," he added.

Veteran female director Huang Shuqin complimented the balance of historical seriousness and personal passion in Tokyo Trial. "The movie shows history peacefully without a personal viewpoint, and it stirs the audience."

The movie evoked patriotism and a pursuit of peace, instead of stirring hatred between China and Japan, said Mao Shi'an, a movie critic in Shanghai.

Japan has fallen foul of public and official feeling in many Asian countries, including China and the Republic of Korea, since World War II, as many people think Tokyo has never properly apologized and atoned for its offenses.

The small-budget film boasts a star-studded cast. Hong Kong veteran Kenneth Tsang plays a Chinese prosecutor and Damian Lau a judge. Taiwan starlet Kelly Lin plays a Japanese girl who falls in love with a Chinese journalist, played by Taiwan heartthrob Ken Zhu.

American and Japanese actors also have a part in the film, including Broadway actor John Henry Cox who acted as the chief prosecutor.

"Cox was unaware of the history at the beginning, but after learning of the Japanese war crimes, he gave a strong emotional performance," Gao said. "I was worried about the Japanese actors at the beginning, but they were quite responsible and cooperative."

Gao said he expected the film's box office to reach 50 million yuan (6.25 million U.S. dollars).

To attract Japanese young tourists to come to Taiwan, the Tourism Office also prepared a "TV Wave" attack to release an F4 lead idol drama. The recent hot and famous drama "The Hospital" already attracted many Japanese girls to travel to Taiwan, and that travel agencies came up with "The Hospital Tour" to sell to Japan. According to Yang Ming Productions, in order that the Japanese fans can “feel the place” they often go to one of the three Taipei General Hospitals entrance to have some quick snapshots as souvenir. Even if Jerry would only “look around for some fresh water” to be used for his concert, Japanese fans would travel far to follow it.

A travel agent said that they are in the process of planning the travel packages for “The Hospital Tour.”

This year, the Tourism office will invest $85 million budget to hit the filming of the F4 idol drama, with about 20 to 25 episodes. It will include Taiwan’s 8 biggest scenic spots and its 4 major features, to be promoted in the major Japanese and Korean TV channels.

KEN CHU: I learned a lot from the seniors

Facing skeptical reactions from some people regarding his participation in this film, KEN says: “to be able to work vis-à-vis with master artists, this might be my once in a lifetime chance. Zenjiang has been acting for 50 years, liusongren started to act during the black-and-white movie era. I learned a lot from these seniors while working with them in this film.” KEN CHU didn’t mind the negative responses, he said: “however they see this, its their business, I wont restrict myself because of their comments.” Zenjiang added: : “don’t be biased, the viewers will definitely NOT be disappointed with KEN’S performance in this film.” During the presscon, because zenjiang has hearing problems, KEN acted as his interpreter then and patiently repeated the reporters’ questions to him. KEN also helped him move in and out, patiently assisting him in every way. For that zenjiang also praised KEN, that KEN really shows respect to elders.

TOKYO TRIAL opened in shanghai yesterday, it hit a box-office record high of 200,000rmb on its opening day, breaking the record of “crazy stone”, the top-grosser for the 1st half of the year in china movies’ premiere, considering that the movie theme is too serious to hit it big...Starting yesterday, chengdu’s cinemas also started to show TOKYO TRIAL, its opening in other cities also hit the same high box-office record.

When the director used Taiwan and hongkong stars as leads in this film, some people were quite doubtful of his choice. But from yesterday’s positive respone, these stars obviously passed the test of majority viewers. Master wang from xinan said: “idol KEN CHU portrayed the role of a reporter from china, while sexy linxilei acted as a Japanese reporter... they both didn’t have many scenes in the film, but you can say that this movie is where they transformed their image away from just idol stars.”

After watching the movie, viewers expressed their liking for the film in the cinema’s commentary. As per the cinema organizers’ memory, the only time this scenario happened was 9 years ago, when “opium war” was shown. As early as in the shanghai movie fest, TOKYO TRIAL already attracted many Japanese companies that expressed extreme interest in bringing the film to japan, because many of them still want to know the real history.

Compared with the 50 yuan it costs to see most films being shown in cinemas these days, the thirty yuan being charged to see "Tokyo Trial" is obviously a temptation for the public.


Since the movie hit theatres on September 1st, box office receipts for "Tokyo Trial" have surpassed those of all other movies being shown at the same time.


Qian Jianping is an official in charge of film distribution with the Shanghai Film Group Corporation.


"Almost every box office of the film shown in cinemas is very high. The seating rate in every show is close to 80 to 90 percent, way more than some imported Hollywood movies."


The producers, together with Shanghai United Cinema Lines, the city's largest cinema chain, are showing the movie thirteen times in a row, something unprecedented in the history of domestic film releases. Obviously this decision was made on the basis of the film's popularity with the public. Many are even coming to see it in family groups.


"I come with my grandma and my mom. This morning I told my grandma that I am going to watch the movie today, and she was quite excited and said she want to see it too."


"Tokyo Trial", directed by Gao Qunshu, retells the history of the two-year long trial of 28 Japanese war criminals in the aftermath of the Second World War. It portrays the Chinese Judge, Mei Rui'ao as managing to persuade the jury and all other judges in the International Military Tribunal to sentence seven of the accused to death by hanging, including former Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tojo and General Kenji Doihara. Many of those who saw the film said it made them feel a closer attachment to China, and some parents said they would bring their children for educational purposes.


"I have already decided to take my child here, let him have the education."


At the same time, according to Qian Jianping, the movie has elicited interest from Japanese film distributors. He says many have contacted their Chinese counterparts to discuss details of distribution cooperation. He predicted that the film would be shown publicly in Japan in the first half of next year.

The all-star cast turned up to share their experiences with the audience when director Gao Qunshu's historic Chinese epic "Tokyo Trial" Gao Qunshu premiered in Beijing on Tuesday.

Hong Kong veterans Damian Lau and Kenneth Tsang, Kelly Lam and Tse Kwan-Ho, starred in the film alongside Ken Zhu from the Taiwan boy band F4 and Chinese mainland actor Ying Da.

"Tokyo Trial" - A Movie No Chinese Should Miss

The historical Chinese movie "Tokyo Trial" debuted in movie theaters across China last Friday. It recounts the trial of top Japanese war criminals at the International Military tribunal for the Far East nearly 60 years ago. This is the first time that China has brought this topic to the silver screen. The movie's accurate rendering of history and its fine artistry has won it wide acclaim. Some even call it a movie no Chinese should miss, even if it is not easy viewing. Our reporter XXX brings us the details.

The Tokyo Trial took place after World War II ended. It lasted two and a half years, from May 1946 to November 1948, about half a year after the start of the Nuremberg Trials in Europe. All Japanese Class-A war criminals were tried by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East in Tokyo. The prosecution team was made up of justices from 11 Allied nations. Seven of the war criminals were hanged after the trial, including Hideki Tojo, the prime minister of Japan during the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii in 1941.

This is not an easy part of history to remake into a movie. It could have easily become a dry documentary. Fortunately, the movie is anything but dull. It not only accurately recounts what happened during that trial, but also successfully profiles a Chinese judge who maintained China's dignity and status on the international stage with his patriotism and wit. It lays bare the untold sufferings of the Chinese people during the Japanese Aggression in the 1930s and 40s, but also reveals the pains the war brought to Japanese civilians through the sufferings of an ordinary Japanese family.

Director Gao Qunshu says through the movie, he wants to tell people the truth about the trial and invite them to ponder war and conflicts.

"Some people try to distort the facts about the Tokyo Trial and that part of history. However, through investigating historical documents and diaries of those who participated the trial, one will learn both the procedures of the trial and the method in which the trial was conducted were all compatible with international law. That means the trial was fair. The movie will help correct some of the intentional distortions of history made by some people. In the meantime, it is also a contemplation on war. What we want to say through the movie is regardless of whether a war is just or unjust, it is the general public who always suffers the most. War can only bring death and destruction. We are against war and long for everlasting peace."

Gao Qunshu says to research authentic historical scenes, he referred to numerous copies of firsthand footage of the trial, including varied video versions shot by the Japanese and Dutch press. He found a valuable trial diary in Japan, which recounts its heated debates. As a result, in the movie, even the details of the actors' costumes and gestures at the tribunal strictly follow historical evidence. Ninety percent of the movie was shot in English and Japanese as it was in the trial.

In addition, a lot of historical footage of the atrocities the Japanese committed during its aggression of China were also woven into the movie, including the Nanjing Massacre in 1937. During the Tokyo trial, the massacre was treated as one unique example of the atrocities the Japanese army committed in Asia. Numerous eyewitness accounts of the massacre were provided by Chinese civilian survivors. Yet, even today, the horrific events have never been emphasized in Japanese history textbooks.

The movie's cast is star-studded. It includes several veteran actors and actresses from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The film also involved Japanese, American and Canadian actors.

Renowned Hong Kong actor Damian Lau starred as Mei Ruao, the only Chinese judge among the 11 at the tribunal. In the movie, the trial was mainly recounted through him. In history, he was an eloquent and patriotic man who received an overseas education and could speak fluent English. Although Damian Lau has created numerous glorious images of judges during his acting career, he found the role as Mei Ruao the most challenging.

"Mei Ruao is a person with a strong sense of ethics and national pride. He represented his country at a significant international affair. He had to shoulder great responsibility as well as a lot of pressure. If he did not harbor strong emotions and a patriotic heart within his bosom, he could hardly successfully overcome the many difficulties before him and fulfill the mission given by the country. He was cool-headed and witty throughout the trial. I tried to master his inner world through these aspects. I really respect him."

Another veteran Hong Kong actor, Kenneth Tseng, played one of the two Chinese prosecutors, Xiang Zhejun, who waged heated debate with the Japanese war criminals and their lawyers. In the end, he succeeded in bringing them to justice.

Talking about his role, the veteran actor, who has starred in numerous Hollywood movies, expressed his respect to his own role.

"He tried hard to bring the war criminals their due punishment. He was an ardent patriotic. I really respect him."

So far the movie has received wide acclaim from historians and international law experts, as well as those in the movie industry. In addition, owing to its prime historical value, the China National Film Museum and Nanjing Massacre Museum also have plans to include the film in their collections.

Commercially, six main theater chains in China have joined for the first time to screen this film. Several Japanese cinema chains have also bought the rights to distribute it overseas.

Kang Xuejun, manager of the Star City Cinema in downtown Beijing's Oriental Plaza, gives us more information about the movie at his cinema.

"The movie's been publicly shown at our movie theater since Friday, like everywhere else in Beijing. Shanghai began screening it half a month earlier. The feedback is rather good. I've watched the movie. The actors' performances are good. I believe a lot of audiences will be interested in the subject because we have very few movies on the same subject. The movie will run in our theater until next month."

So far, there are no reports on the movie's box office returns. However, some worry one potential drawback for domestic viewers might be the heavy concentration of foreign-language conversations in the movie.

Nonetheless, many believe this movie is worthy for all Chinese to watch. Here's Damian Lau, who played the major role of the judge.

"I hope more young people will watch this movie. I hope they can learn from this part of history that regardless of what country they come from, all human beings should work hard to make themselves outstanding. A person should try to bring honor to his or her country and people."

Famous Taiwan heartthrob Ken Zhu, who plays the role of a Chinese journalist in the movie, echoed his sentiments.

"Maybe this movie is not an entertaining film, but it's a movie that all Chinese should watch because it retells historical facts all Chinese should know."

Chinese people are not the only ones who should watch it. Japanese people should as well. A recent survey shows 70 percent of Japanese adults don't know any details about the Tokyo Trial, while 19 percent haven't even heard of it.

Let's remember director Gao Qunshu's words. This movie is a call for peace, yet history should never be forgotten.

Chinese film on trial of Japanese WWII war criminals debuts to acclaim

A Chinese director has released a new film -- to critical acclaim in China -- which he claims will redress misrepresentations of Japanese war crimes during World War II.

"Tokyo Trial" recounts the court proceedings against 28 top Japanese war criminals at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East after the war.

Director Gao Qunshu claimed it accurately portrays how a Chinese judge swayed opinion on the international panel of 11 judges to narrowly avert a "miscarriage of justice".

The judges -- from China, the United States, Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and the Philippines -- ended more than two years of proceedings with a close division over sentencing.

However, Chinese judge Mei Ru'ao gave the last speech charging the criminals with stealing Chinese resources and crimes against humanity, securing a majority of six for death penalties for the seven class A war criminals, including Hideki Tojo, Kenji Doihara and Koki Hirota.

"The film reviews the war as well as those responsible. The Chinese judges averted a shameful miscarriage of justice," Gao said.

"I aim to tell the incontrovertible truth of history," he added.

Tokyo Trial comes 23 years after the making of "Tokyo Saiban" by Japanese director Masaki Kobayashi, which was criticized for misrepresenting history.

In a 1985 review of the Japanese version, New York Times film critic Drew Middleton wrote: "(The movie) is visually satisfying, but historically empty. Masaki Kobayashi, the director, himself a prisoner of war, has interspersed the trial scenes with bits from World War II archives that, granted the importance of the trial itself, seem largely irrelevant.

"Moreover we get little about Japanese atrocities such as the Bataan death march or the Nanjing massacres after the Japanese Army took that city in its campaign against China. We do get the atom bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The message, to this reviewer, was that the West was worse than the East in terms of atrocities."

It's an opinion shared by septuagenarian Chinese director Xie Jin. "The movie totally confounded right and wrong."

However, Xie, who was honored last year with a lifetime achievement Golden Rooster in the country's premier film awards, said Tokyo Trial was the first film he had paid to watch in more than a decade.

"It's praiseworthy for the true representation of history. I hope both Chinese and Japanese audiences can watch it, because too many young people don't know this period of history," he said.

A poll published by Asahi Shimbun newspaper on May 2 showed 70 percent of Japanese respondents did not know of the content of the Tokyo Trial, and 17 percent had never even heard of the trial.

Ten percent of respondents aged 20 to 30 knew of the trial's content.

"It's a pity that a film representing the true history of the Tokyo Trial appeared 60 years after the establishment of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, while its counterpart on the Nuremberg Trial, 'Judgment at Nuremberg' (directed by Stanley Kramer) was finished in 1961," said Ling Yan, a Chinese jurist with The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and professor of the China University of Political Science and Law.

The history of the Nazi Holocaust of European Jews during World War II was widely known and agreed thanks to the Jewish people maintaining awareness. The Chinese people should also learn to prevent others denying history, said Lin Xiaoguang, a researcher with the Party History Research Center of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee.

"History education in school, though highly regarded by the government and society, is not enough. We must make full use of mass media to let more people know the history," he added.

Veteran female director Huang Shuqin complimented the balance of historical seriousness and personal passion in Tokyo Trial. "The movie shows history peacefully without a personal viewpoint, and it stirs the audience."

The movie evoked patriotism and a pursuit of peace, instead of stirring hatred between China and Japan, said Mao Shi'an, a movie critic in Shanghai.

Japan has fallen foul of public and official feeling in many Asian countries, including China and the Republic of Korea, since World War II, as many people think Tokyo has never properly apologized and atoned for its offenses.

The small-budget film boasts a star-studded cast. Hong Kong veteran Kenneth Tsang plays a Chinese prosecutor and Damian Lau a judge. Taiwan starlet Kelly Lin plays a Japanese girl who falls in love with a Chinese journalist, played by Taiwan heartthrob Ken Zhu.

American and Japanese actors also have a part in the film, including Broadway actor John Henry Cox who acted as the chief prosecutor.

"Cox was unaware of the history at the beginning, but after learning of the Japanese war crimes, he gave a strong emotional performance," Gao said. "I was worried about the Japanese actors at the beginning, but they were quite responsible and cooperative."

Gao said he expected the film's box office to reach 50 million yuan (6.25 million U.S. dollars).

Mei Ru�fao arrives in Tokyo on March 20, 1946, as the newly appointed Chinese judge for the Far East International Military Tribunal. Friends and colleagues greet him there with a welcome ceremony where Mei is presented with an antique sword.

Xiao Nan�Ca journalist from the Ta Kung Pao Newspaper, is sent to cover the trial. He witnesses the awarding of the sword at the party. He is worried for Mei as he foresees challenges ahead for the judge.

At last, the tribunal opens. Although the other foreign judges look down upon him, Mei and his Chinese colleagues hold their own in the arena.

However members of the Japanese right wing are planning to assassinate Mei. Once journalist Xiao Nan finds out, he informs Mei of the dangerous situation, and stops the plot from succeeding.

It�fs time for the final verdict. Seven Japanese war criminals led by Hideki Tojo are sentenced to death by the Far East International Military Tribunal.
