Teaser of 'A Love To Kill' starring Rain Creates Stir

The new KBS Monday-Tuesday series 'A Love To Kill' written by Lee Kyung-hee and produced by Kim Kyu-tae, has already drawn significant attention from viewers ahead of its premiere on Oct. 31. The series' leading actor, Rain (real name Chung Ji-hoon), said that viewers would be surprised when they see the pilot episode of the drama, and it seems he is absolutely correct.

Immediately after the teaser of 'A Love To Kill' aired on Oct. 20 prior to the Wednesday-Thursday series 'My Rosy Life' the drama's Web site bulletin board was flooded with messages. It was the second teaser for the new series so far, with the first one airing on Oct. 13.

The 38-second-long teaser caught viewers' eyes by featuring a bruised Rain, who plays a K-1 fighter in the drama, against the backdrop of a cloudy sky in the heart of a city, and his co-star Shin Min-ah against a clear blue sky at the seashore. The
teaser was produced in the form of a wide aspect movie-like screen. The final scene of the teaser showing Rain shedding tears seemed to particularly impress fans.

More than 1,600 messages have been posted on the series' Web site as of Oct. 21.One viewer wrote, "I finally saw the teaser today, and now I really look forward to seeing this drama." Another viewer wrote, "It looks even more impressive and
sad on the screen."

Viewers are placing high expectations on Rain as the series' leading actor. One viewer wrote, "Now I can watch Rain on TV as much as I want."

"The sad look in his eyes arouses so much compassion. [Rain] must be very busy these days preparing for his concert in China and filming a drama. I will pray for his well-being so that he can fully show off his acting skills," wrote another viewer.

'A Love To Kill' in which Rain plays the K-1 fighter and bodyguard 'Kang Bok-ku' opposite Shin, who portrays a star actor named 'Cha Eun-seok' will premiere Oct. 31, replacing the series 'Wedding.'

Rain, who is presented as Asia’s Star, is landing on Mainland China after going through Japan, Hong Kong and Taipei.

Rain is set to open his solo concert, and invade China, this coming 22nd, at the Beijing Workers Stadium in front of 40,000 fans. 40,000 spectators at a concert is something that was never even attempted before. Rain would be venturing to aim for Chinese fans, rather than his Korean fans at the concert venue with almost same size as Jamsil Main Stadium.

Rain’s representatives adamantly said that they, “were very nervous since this is the first solo concert in China,” and that, “despite that (they) would do their best to show the power of a Korean singer, and return. In order to obtain interviews for this concert, there will be reporters from Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan and Thailand going over to Beijing, China. There will be an expected 350 Chinese reporters there as well.

DR Music (Representative Yoon, Deung Ryong), who is in charge of Rain’s South-East Asia invasion, has said that, “this is a matter of “Hanryu” pride so (they) feel a great sense of power,” and that there have been “many noteworthy stars, from Taipei and Hong Kong, those who anyone would recognize with just their names, asking for VIP seats, and also that those from the Chinese Ministry of Culture, as well as public authorities, military personnel and other top officials who are expected to be in the VIP sections.”

On one hand, the Chinese have arranged to fill at least 5,000 seats in order to insure that their foreign singer is able to have as perfect a concert as possible.

From Singer to Combat Sports Fighter, an Actor Is Born

He is a man who has nothing but his own flesh and bone. He is a man to whom women swear to give their lives. He is a combat sports fighter who has never won a single match. He is Gang Bok-gu, the protagonist of the new drama “This Cursed Love” (Korean title: “Ijugilnomui Sarang”), which will debut on KBS2 at 9:55 p.m. on October 31.

But there is another man behind the role: A man who auditioned a dozen times to become a singer, but was turned down each time because of his looks; A man whose dream was to get an award for best new artist and dedicate it to his mother. That man is Rain, the singer.

He is also Jung Ji-hoon, the actor who plays the ill-fated Gang Bok-gu in “This Cursed Love.”

The new drama is written by Lee Gyeong-hi, who wrote one of last season’s biggest hits, “I’m Sorry, I Love You,” and is directed by rising star Kim Gyu-tae. Jung Ji-hoon and Shin Min-ah star as the main love interests.

Man Gang Bok-gu Has Been Hurt by Love—

An innocent woman loves a man then leaves him. Because of her, the man becomes a human vegetable, and the man’s brother swears revenge. But the brother ends up falling in love with the woman. It’s not an unfamiliar story for audiences of television dramas.

But the protagonist Gang Bok-gu is an unfamiliar character. The strongly-worded title seems to refer not to love but to the character. His pastime is extorting money from students. He is a combat sports fighter, a line of work that’s becoming quite popular lately, but he is an arrogant man who loses all his matches on purpose because he doesn’t like being singled out as a winner.

In the first episode, a woman stands on the railing of a bridge and cries that she will come down if he tells her that he loves her just once. Gang doesn’t think twice before saying, “Go ahead and jump.”

Protagonists are usually portrayed as having a good heart even when their actions appear otherwise, but Gang steers clear of this trite convention. When he falls in love with his brother’s ex-girlfriend, Cha Eun-seok, he becomes someone he can’t accept. That’s why Jung Ji-hoon describes his character as “a man who learns his lesson after turning his nose up at love.” He says he is “glad to be able to play such a vile person.”

Man Jung Ji-hoon Has Become Crazy about Acting—

There was a time when he would wait around the house all day and suddenly ask himself, “What on earth am I doing?” But nowadays, he’s so busy that he doesn’t have a moment to rest. He is Rain, the singer, and Jung Ji-hoon, the actor. After returning from his Beijing tour on October 22, he is devoting himself to the show. When the show’s over, he will hit the road again on another tour.

In preparation for his fighting scenes, he did 2,000 reps a day with a jump rope for two months. He sculpted his physique with chicken in the morning and mackerel in the evening. He got injured during filming countless times. But he still confesses that he finds it more difficult to do the emotional scenes than action sequences. “Singing and dancing can be mastered through practice, but you can’t learn emotions,” he notes, and explains that he tries to feel the character with his heart rather than understanding them with his head.

Jung Ji-hoon made his acting debut with “Let’s Go to School, Sangdu” on KBS2 and began to enter the spotlight in KBS2’s “Full House.” In this, his third drama, audiences are hoping that he will shed the reputation of being a “singer-actor.”

The show’s writer, Lee Gyeong-hi, praises him as a “gem of an actor.” His female lead, Shin Min-ah, also commented that he “immerses himself to the point where you forget that he’s a singer.”

When asked what kind of character he wants to play the most in future, he replies, “Gang Bok-gu.” That’s how deep into his character he has fallen. “Audiences will invest just one hour of their lives and experience a love that rarely comes even once in a lifetime,” he says confidently.

Rain continued acting in new drama after Full House, KBS TV's "love that deserves to die", will air next week. Yesterday afternoon, Rain and casts from the drama, including main actress Shin Minah attended the press conference.

Recently, every time Rain appears, he dresses surpisingly. including last time's fish net hat and after wearing checkered suit. This time he appears wearing black with purple design. Rain expresses for this new drama's fighter role, he lost around 16 pounds. Besides following a special meal plan, every day he exercises alot. His daily routine of 2 hrs of boxing practise increased to 6 hrs. He also practises akido. Every morning and evening he does 500 rope skipping.

At the press conference, when Rain was asked if he had any plans to make a movie,
he said "I don't want to make any commercial films yet"

Due to overwhelming requests from Taiwanese fans, the entertainment company of Rain has decided to end his final overseas concert tour this year in Taiwan. Taiwan fans are for a treat to his great dancing skills and well-toned body.

The Korean Romance-Comedy Series "Full House" has given Rain a boost in popularity. His concert tours around the world have been achieving overwhelming responses from countries such as Korea, US, Japan, Hong Kong, Beijing, with each concert sold out quickly every time. However, the destination of his final concert of the year has been undecided for a long time, despite getting enthusiastic invitations from places like Thailand and Singapore. Finally, it was the thirty thousand taiwanese fans who succeeded in winning the bid, and the decision to hold Rain's year-end concert in Taiwan was finalised on 23 Oct.

Despite being in the industry for a short three years, Rain has strong stage appeal. His ability to dance well and sing well has captured the hearts of many female fans.

Rain's original schedule to promote his drama in Taiwan earlier this year was cancelled later. To make this up to his Taiwan fans, holding his year end concert in Taipei Metropolitan Dome on the 29th Dec 05 is the best New Year present his fans will receive.

Rain a hot favourite like Olympic Games

Korean Heavenly King Rain strong storm-wave sweeping into countries - Japan, Hong Kong and Beijing in recent months, has held his solo concerts in these 3 countries, last Saturday (22 October) he has just completed his concert in Beijing at the Workers Gymnasium. Due to the strong response from these countries, and his TV drama [Full House] gaining popularity in South East Asia, Thailand, Singapore and Taiwan have eagerly been urging him to stage his concert in their respective countries, at last, Taiwan has gained victory to have Rain’s concert to be held in December this year.
Rain’s Management Company JYP commented that due to receiving overwhelming invitation from several countries to hold Rain’s concert, it was as overwhelming as in gaining authority to host Olympics Games. After his concert in Beijing, Rain’s Management Company JYP, announced that this year’s last concert will be held on 29th December in Taipei.

Strong support from 30,000 fans
The initial plan is to hold the concert at Taipei Metropolitan Dome, the spokesman of the Management Company revealed that it was due to a petition received from 30,000 Taiwan fans inviting Rain to visit Taipei, which gives them a deep impression, so they made this decision. He added that there were more than 20 companies in Taiwan interested to be the authorized Concert Organizer, Rain’s popularity in Taiwan is indeed overwhelming and strong.
On the other hand, during Rain’s concert in Beijing last weekend, it was reported that the Police department implemented the same security check system as that designed for Year 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing.

If you look up the word "bi" in a Korean dictionary, you will discover more than seven definitions, including downpour falling to the earth caused by water vapors in the air cooling down, cleaning tool designed to clear away dust and garbage,' and a monument that is inscribed with characters and intended to commemorate great figures or achievements.'

The word "bi" can be used in diverse ways depending on the sentence in which you use it, or what you intend to express. And yet another definition of "bi" just might be added to this official list of definitions soon: "the name of a pop star that swept Asia beginning in 2005."

Rain, a versatile entertainer who shined from his debut
A new male singer named Bi (Rain) captured the spotlight when he made his debut in May, 2002. Before that performance, rumors had spread amid the growing attention focused on him that he was a highly talented singer who would one day lead the Korean pop music culture, along with jokes that he would be the most sought-after prize among all the female singers. Besides the buzz, his appealingly unique name generated further interest. What was the real identity of Bi, or "Rain?" What did he look like? Bi effectively raised massive curiosity among the public even before his first show. At his debut concert, he staged a glittering performance that fully showed off his remarkable dancing and singing skills, effectively justifying all the rumors about him. Following his dazzling debut that May, he instantly joined the ranks of the best singers in Korea.

In 2003, he also tried his hand at acting by appearing in the KBS television drama "Sangdu, let's go school," and demonstrated legitimately strong potential as an actor. Bi, best Asian star of the year 2005
In 2005, Bi clinched the Best Buzz Asia from Korea at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2005. He also won the best Korean singer award 2005 at the Mandarin Music Honors in Taiwan. Having been voted as the best Asian singer by the Taiwanese media, Bi is positioning himself as one of the most admired Asian stars this year. Wherever he goes, he generates huge public interest and becomes a hot topic of conversation. His every move is monitored by the media and draws keen attention from music fans.

Bi is currently on an Asian music tour which started in Seoul and will travel to Tokyo and Hong Kong. He is creating and showcasing fresh new spectacles at every single concert, and tickets are selling out quickly as a result. The Japanese pronounce Bi as "Pi," and they also describe the singer with another term as well. But when he chatted with fans after the concert, he surprised his fans by displaying a boyish and playful demeanor, earning him the label "Kawaii," which means "cute" in Japanese. Bi is famous for trying his best in whatever he does. Rain lost 16 lbs for the new drama

Rain continued acting in new drama after Full House, KBS TV's "love that deserves to die", will air next week. Yesterday afternoon, Rain and casts from the drama, including main actress Shin Minah attended the press conference.

Recently, every time Rain appears, he dresses surpisingly. including last time's fish net hat and after wearing checkered suit. This time he appears wearing black with purple design. Rain expresses for this new drama's fighter role, he lost around 16 pounds. Besides following a special meal plan, every day he exercises alot. His daily routine of 2 hrs of boxing practise increased to 6 hrs. He also practises akido. Every morning and evening he does 500 rope skipping.

At the press conference, when Rain was asked if he had any plans to make a movie,
he said "I don't want to make any commercial films yet"

No doubt the sexiest Korean artiste

This is a translation of Benny Liu Wei Heng’s upfront and personal account with Rain.

About Benny Liu
Benny is one of the earliest supporter of the Korean entertainment industry in Hong Kong. He is presently a radio DJ hosting a Korean pop programme in Hong Kong, as well as the chief editor of website www.koreanstorm.com. In his recent book “Han Liu Xing Xiang” or Upfront and Personal with the Korean Stars (translation by me), he describes his encounter with Rain as below:

Three years ago, I met up with JY Park when he came to Hong Kong with a famous female artiste on her album promotion tour.

He told me enthusiastically that he is currently grooming a new artiste who will soon release his debut album. “This artiste can sing and dance fantastically, and has a outstanding appearance. I’m confident he’ll be a success. You must look out for him. He has a special name, Bi (rain)!”

Shortly after, I saw the birth of Rain’s singing career. In that very year when his debut album was released, Rain walked away with all the year-end promising newcomer awards.

Three years later, not only has he won the m.net “Best Male Singer Award”, his drama series with Song Hye Kyo, Full House, was also a huge success. In a blink of the eye, Rain has become the king of pop and drama, creating a rainy storm in Asia and posing threat to the popular Bae Yong-Jun.

My first personal encounter with Rain is in December 2004. It was the afternoon before m.net’s award ceremony. Although he was yet to be announced m.net “Best Male Singer of the year”, a local newspaper had already reported the results of an online poll where Rain was voted “The sexiest artiste in the city”. I was quite skeptical at that time. How is it possible that a male artiste is able to beat all those beautiful Korean actresses in a “sexy award”? But that day, as I walked into the backstage dressing room of the award ceremony, I saw Rain and was convinced that he could, indeed, be the sexiest artiste in Korea.

Rain is tall at a height of 1.82m. That day, he was wearing a black turtleneck with a maroon suit and a black hat. He had the physique of a model and while those eyes were small, they had the most alluring look in them. Even I was deeply attracted to him despite being a man.

Rain was surprisingly more shy than I had thought he would be. There were also the occasional child-like qualities to some of his answers. This is especially so when I asked him about his feelings for Song Hye Kyo. He looked a little flustered and awkward upon hearing the question, and quickly turned to his manager seated beside him to consult on how to answer this question. Finally he replied, “It’s been a pleasure working with her. She has taught me a lot.”

He said that both acting and singing are his passions, but they are very different careers. “As a singer, you can communicate with the audience using your voice, your dance moves and your body language. It’s a channel where you can fully express who you really are; as an actor however, you have to use your acting skills to convince the audience of a character whom you are portraying. Both are challenging in their own ways.”

Having received countless awards, Rain confessed that the first is still the most memorable. “At the moment when the emcee announced that I had won the “Most promising newcomer” award, my tears just started flowing.” With this, Rain expressed his gratitude to his mentor JY Park for discovering him.

At the time of the interview, Rain has yet to visit Hong Kong, but he said that it’s a place he will definitely visit, “I’ve always heard that the food in Hong Kong is fantastic. I’m a food-lover, so I’ll definitely drop by one day!”

That night, I saw him won his “Best Male Singer” award, his performance at the award ceremony mesmerizing all audiences off stage.

Rain, indeed the sexiest artiste in Korea!

KBS broadcasted a special program about the singer/actor Rain under a program title “Why Rain Creates Feverish Excitement.”

KBS credits Rain for the Hallyu phenomenon spreading throughout Asia like a wildfire, and focuses on how the onetime backup dancer Rain became a leading celebrity and a leading singer/actor, ambitiously eyeing the world market.

KBS also revealed through this special program in Oct. 30, Time Magazine’s report stating, “Rain will not stop here, but will become the first Korean star to debut into the American market”, including the international media’s favorable reports of Rain.

The program was divided into four subcategories to expand on the main theme “Why Rain Creates Feverish Excitement.” The four subcategory titles were: “Asia, In Love With Rain”, “How Did Rain Become an Asian Star?”, “Meet Jung Ji Hoon, the 24 Year Old Young Man, Not the Singer/Actor”, and “Rain, Moving Beyond the Asian Horizon and Into the World”.

KBS revealed that the program did also focus on Rain’s future in the world market.

Bi is lying in the grass while his friends are playing around. Shin Minah is lying on the beach because she is shooting a drama/movie. Bi is lying down when his friend points to a girl standing on the ledge of a bridge. His friend urges Bi to stop the girl from committing suicide. He slowly walks up to the girl and says "Are you a pervert?" "I can see your underwear from under the bridge." The girl says, "I'm gonna jump.". She wants to hear Bi say, "I Love You" However, Bi encourages her to jump off the bridge and walks away from the bridge. The girl asks what she doesnt have that the other girl has. Bi doesnt answer and walks away. The girl jumps off and disappears in the deep river. Meanwhile on the beach, Shin Minah is on the set of a movie/drama. Minah walks toward the water and continues to walk deeper into the ocean eventhough the director said "cut". Back at the bridge, Bi gives CPR to the girl who fell off. The girl awakens and Bi tells her that he won't save her next time. Shin Minah's car is heading back to Seoul when they run into Bi and his friends. Start of Episode 1. Minah arrives at a hotel and is bombarded by media members. From a distance, someone is looking at her. Minah knows that the guy is brother or boyfriend. (i'm kind of confused)

Bi is in the ring and remembers what his brother told him. "Even if someone hits you, do not hit back and just let them hit you." The round starts and Bi's opponent starts beating Bi up. Then Bi starts fighting back and nearly knocks his opponent out. The round ends and Bi learns that this match is the "Championship Match". The final round starts and Bi intentionally loses the match. After the match, his opponent asks,"what is your purpose in life?". Bi smears his gum all over the other guy's face.

Minah makes her way up to her brother's house. There she meets a close friend. The old lady tells her that she doesn't look good with her brother or boyfriend. She gives Minah a bottle of Soju and tells her to forget about her oppa. Later that night, Minah is at a screening of some sort. She drinks a lot of wine and heads out to the balcony. Minah calls her oppa, but he does not answer multiple ties. She says to herself that she cannot break up with him. All she wants to do is meet Eun Suk once. Meanwhile, someone is outside (the son of some CEO) and calls a couple of clients. He comes back in and sees Minah. He tries to help her up but she falls backwards and he lands on her. Minah yells and runs away but there was someone who captured the whole incident on his/her cellphone. The guy tries to catch up to Minah and calls her name. Minah calls him a "pervert and tells him that if he comes near her again, she will kill him".

Bi and his friend are roaming the streets and start trashing a market. Bi's friend asks a market lady for the money but she refuses. Bi backs her friend up by saying how scary she really is. They continue to visit businesses and collect their payments. Back at Minah's house, her brother* sees the video some guy made. He calls his friend and asks who the guy on top of Shin Minah is.

The "pervert" is explaining a project when his father gets mad and throws a notebook at him. His dad leaves and the French clients tell him why his father may be mad. Back at Minah's house, her mom is crying about her daughter's image. The "pervert" calls Minah and asks to meet her privately. They're at a Aquatic Center and start talking about what happened that night. They start arguing and Minah tells the "pervert" to take care of the situation alone. Bi works out and meets a girl. The girl asks, "Why do you never call me?" Bi tells her that he never calls girls. The girl tells Bi that she is gonna get married. Bi doesn't care because he already has a girl. The girl starts to cry because Bi used to love her. I guess Bi is going out with her because she saved his life.

Bi is heading home when his friend tells him that he found Bi's brother. Later that night, Bi starts talking with his brother and his brother apologizes for not being kind. His brother sees Minah on the screen and reaches for her. Bi says, " are you a cha eun suk stalker?". Then in a split second his brother falls of the ledge.

The new KBS Monday-Tuesday series 'A Love To Kill' written by Lee Kyung-hee and produced by Kim Kyu-tae, has already drawn significant attention from viewers ahead of its premiere on Oct. 31. The series' leading actor, Rain (real name Chung Ji-hoon), said that viewers would be surprised when they see the pilot episode of the drama, and it seems he is absolutely correct.

Immediately after the teaser of 'A Love To Kill' aired on Oct. 20 prior to the Wednesday-Thursday series 'My Rosy Life' the drama's Web site bulletin board was flooded with messages. It was the second teaser for the new series so far, with the first one airing on Oct. 13.

The 38-second-long teaser caught viewers' eyes by featuring a bruised Rain, who plays a K-1 fighter in the drama, against the backdrop of a cloudy sky in the heart of a city, and his co-star Shin Min-ah against a clear blue sky at the seashore. The
teaser was produced in the form of a wide aspect movie-like screen. The final scene of the teaser showing Rain shedding tears seemed to particularly impress fans.

More than 1,600 messages have been posted on the series' Web site as of Oct. 21.One viewer wrote, "I finally saw the teaser today, and now I really look forward to seeing this drama." Another viewer wrote, "It looks even more impressive and
sad on the screen."

Viewers are placing high expectations on Rain as the series' leading actor. One viewer wrote, "Now I can watch Rain on TV as much as I want."

"The sad look in his eyes arouses so much compassion. [Rain] must be very busy these days preparing for his concert in China and filming a drama. I will pray for his well-being so that he can fully show off his acting skills," wrote another viewer.

'A Love To Kill' in which Rain plays the K-1 fighter and bodyguard 'Kang Bok-ku' opposite Shin, who portrays a star actor named 'Cha Eun-seok' will premiere Oct. 31, replacing the series 'Wedding.'

Rain, who is presented as Asia’s Star, is landing on Mainland China after going through Japan, Hong Kong and Taipei.

Rain is set to open his solo concert, and invade China, this coming 22nd, at the Beijing Workers Stadium in front of 40,000 fans. 40,000 spectators at a concert is something that was never even attempted before. Rain would be venturing to aim for Chinese fans, rather than his Korean fans at the concert venue with almost same size as Jamsil Main Stadium.

Rain’s representatives adamantly said that they, “were very nervous since this is the first solo concert in China,” and that, “despite that (they) would do their best to show the power of a Korean singer, and return. In order to obtain interviews for this concert, there will be reporters from Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan and Thailand going over to Beijing, China. There will be an expected 350 Chinese reporters there as well.

DR Music (Representative Yoon, Deung Ryong), who is in charge of Rain’s South-East Asia invasion, has said that, “this is a matter of “Hanryu” pride so (they) feel a great sense of power,” and that there have been “many noteworthy stars, from Taipei and Hong Kong, those who anyone would recognize with just their names, asking for VIP seats, and also that those from the Chinese Ministry of Culture, as well as public authorities, military personnel and other top officials who are expected to be in the VIP sections.”

On one hand, the Chinese have arranged to fill at least 5,000 seats in order to insure that their foreign singer is able to have as perfect a concert as possible.
