Cai Yue Xun + Yu Xiao Wei = Two-person dream making team

In 2001, because of MG, Cai Yue Xun has made F4 to be popular idols, got the Golden Bell Best Director Award, started the trend of filming idol dramas, and opened the markets for TWese tv dramas in Asia. Although he had nonstop invitations at that time, his family put in all the resources to finish the drama "Friends" in 2003. Unfortunately, the ratings of "Friends" were not satisfactory although it had good responses from the critics, and his company ended up losing more than one million dollars.

In 2004, Cai Yue Xun's team started a new journey again, The Hospital. With more than 2 years of preparation, what kind of ideals do they want to bring to the audience in TW?

The 3rd Generation of Domineer

From the start of the preparation to the end of filming, it had been more than two years. The Hospital's budget had gone up from 1.5 millions per episode with the total amount of twenty something millions to 4 millions per episode with the total budget of about 80 millions. It has broken the record in the drama production history in TW.

This couple, Cai Yue Xun and Yu Xiao Wei, has obviously put in a lot of effort and money. However, they don't just want to produce high-rating and attention-seeking dramas, or to just talk about ideals. Actually, they want to find new possibilities for dramas from TW.

"Among the dramas in Asia, the first generation of domineer was Japan. The second generation is Korea. When Japan's are losing their popularity and Korea's are expanding their territories, if we persist, we may have the opportunity to be the third generation of domineer," analyzed by Yu Xiao Wei, "The third generation of domineer will be TW or Mainland China."

The success of MG provided the couple the conception/ideas and determination to explore the markets for the Chinese dramas. However, due to Friends' poor ratings, this couple once lost their faith. Luckily, during Friends' autograph sessions, they noticed that they were actually supported by a lot of audiences who were excluded from the ratings. When they were told "Thank you", this gave them encouragement again. The Hospital is the project which they continue their dream and one can easily see their effort everywhere, such as the script, the traning of the actors, prop, etc...

Wish for perfection and search for high qualities

This project all started from Yue Xiao Wei's being a fan of Hou Wen Yong (the author of the novel The Hospital). As Yu Xiao Wei knew that Cai Yue Xun was interested in filming something about medicine, she encouraged him to fight for the project after knowing that CTV has bought the copyright.

Based on his and his mom's past experiences in the hospital when he was young, at first Cai Yue Xun was only moved by human's weakness during sickness from patients' point of view. Then after reading "A Medical Student's Journal" by Wang Yi Jia, he realized that "When facing sickness and dealth, everyone is so helpless", including the doctors.

From that time, Director Cai has realized that "life is full of challenges" and the hospital is exactly an unforgettable and unavoidable place where one can see another face of life. Therefore, Cai Yue Xun has determined that one day he will direct an "entertaining, but not necessarily lesson-teaching or threatening, medical drama."

The Hospital gave him the opportunity to fulfill his dream.

Before filming, his target was the US drama,"ER". Once the filming started, he then realized that the challenges in front of him were so great. They included renting the filming locations, preparing the prop, providing training courses for the actors, etc... It was common that they learned as they filmed. In the process, Japan was also very curious about this drama which shared the same name as one of its own. The visit of a team of 20 and more people sent by one Japanese tv company also gave the crew some pressure.

"I feel like being in a very painful race..." He is very sorry that "ER" high standard is not something TW dramas can reach at this time.

Nevertheless, dreaming to direct a drama like "ER" is the force behind his continuous improvement and self expectation. It's heard that his strict requirements had reached the point of being abusive to himself and others, and they had broken numerous records. For stance, the most expensive scene was the hospital lobby where the President arrived and entered the hospital, which costed over NT$500,000. "We built the scene which was 20 yrs. more advanced than the current setting in TW... 50 temporary actors were hired...Once the camera started filming, $500,000 were gone like that... Another time, for a small station, the director told the producer 'The station needs to be located on the hillside and the hilltop should also be seen', then the crew searched around TW for the right location..." Yu Xiao Wei said that the strict requirements by the director was the reason why the production fee was 4 times as planned.

Surprisingly, although The Hospital is not broadcasted yet, the broadcast copyright has been successfully sold to different countries. This proves that markets for this kind of dramas do exist. "Now the thing I want to focus on is market benefits, instead of award winning dramas, as I want to open more markets. Once the markets are developed, there are all kinds of possibilities, then we won't get stuck at one place." Cai Yue Xun expressed.

Novel was adapted to be tv drama

This time, the first 15 episodes were adapted from the novel which focus on power struggle among some characters. "But because the ending of the original novel was so hopeless" Cai Yue Xun explained, "The script writers have added another 10 episodes focusing on the things we also want to express about care among people, such as life, love between lovers, and love among family members."

Besides, changes had been made on some characters' personalities and proportion of love matters in the drama. "In the novel, although he was very skillful in his profession, Dr. Su's personality was too passive. In the drama, we changed him into "a very skillful and adorable doctor" to begin with, so the audience will be fond of him, so the audience will follow our lead to watch what is really going on with the power struggle and life cycling inside the tower." Yu Xiao Wei explained.

Su Yi Hua's personality and his view about love were the parts being argued the most in the process of script adaptation. They had spent a lot of time to discuss with the script writers. They both thought that "This character was too passive in the novel and it can't fulfill the need of a commercial tv drama." Therefore, they invited Yan Cheng Xu to play the character, much younger than the one in the novel, and the character was changed to be pure and more active. The only time he was irresolute was when he dealed with his love relationships.

In addition, the biggest selling point of most dramas, love matters, had been increased in the drama as well. In the novel, the components of the love relationships were not complete. Cai Yue Xun insisted to incorporate his ideals into the drama and hopes that the ending will provide the audience some kind of realization. "As Su Yi Hua was irresolute, he lost the female lead Guan Xin, and of course he was impacted by the lost. However, we let him learn that 'What is the most important thing in life?' and let him realize that he couldn't lose any more. If he lost again, he got nothing left. Drama is for people to make dreams and at the same time, it should also give people the power of hope; therefore, we combined the "power struggle myth" with the "love myth", and produced the TWese version of The Hospital.

summary: The desks of different doctors in the drama is the stage we used to show their different status and personalities. For Dr. Su Yi Hua's desk, I used a lot of stationary, documents, patient files, and medical books to show his enthusiasm in work and his care to his patients. Regarding the casually placed stethoscope, mug as the pen holder, and the crackers for snack, they showed his easy going personality.

Medical prop

Tumor - I finished myself in one week using pork. In the process, I kept consulting Dr. Hou Wen Yong. No one wanted to touch the finished product, as it really stank.
Surgery table - We used pork skin as human's. Similar scenes are frequently shown in European and American dramas, but not so much in Japanese dramas.

Patient's chart - It was designed after reviewing the real patient's charts in the real hospital. The set up of the page and even the logo on the paper were carefully designed to look good in front of the camera and to match the theme of the drama.

Dai Li Ren ~ A Good Actor is also Creative

In forth coming TV serial {The Hospital}, Dai Li Ren plays a driven and ambitious surgeon ~ Qiu Qing Cheng. In the show, he creates opposition and initiates drama competing in the power struggle and wielding manipulative tactics. In reality, he was closely involved in the productions as he has a vast experience in stage, movie performances and directing as well.

Through this interview, readers are able to peek into this astute actor’s angle in playing a character. His intense involvement in production and the sheer possibilities of our local cinematic property.

Not Only Just An Actor

Dai Li Ren said, ‘This is my first in trying to act a character with such depth. So I have also been more cautious.’

In comparison, a stage performance would need at most 2 months of rehearsals. A movie is about half a year but for ‘The Hospital’, he had put in 8 to 9 months of dedication. In the show, he plays the outstanding surgeon, Qiu Qing Cheng, who pits himself against another surgeon, Su Yi Hua played by Jerry Yan. Both the male leads have many an exciting scene together.

He is known to be fastidious about script selection. In fact, he rejected Director Chai Yue Xun’s initial invitation. The reason was that the character is not the type that he had in mind. A worry of his was that his perception of the character might be different from the actual. Yet Director Chai was adamant and waited a whole year for him. Thus after many communicative efforts, it paid off.

Equally demanding and a perfectionist in details, Director Chai understood Dai Li Ren’s multi-talents in writing, directing and acting. He gave Dai Li Ren more than 100% freedom in his acting. Changing all his lines, developing the other characters in reference to the novel and assisting in the conceptualizing the theme for the script. Besides these, he organized all the composition of the characters, many a time he gave advice to the Director during filming too. ‘If not for fear of interruption, I would love to help out at the Editing Room.’

Why would an actor need to take such trouble, to be involved in every aspect? Perhaps it is his determination to be creative and dedicated in the completion of the entire process.

‘Lines’ Are An Actor’s Creative Space

Whether it is the stage, movies or TV, Dai Li Ren will definitely have to change his own lines before he feels that he has done sufficient character preparation. ‘The script only provides a foundation. Since my early days in the Art Institute, I have understood that even if the script was by Shakespeare, simply memorizing by rote is really silly. There are disparities in the time setting, the nationalities and more importantly the actors are not the same so the acting and language expressions will not be similar. ’

‘This is when a good actor is needed,’ Dai Li Ren stated. ‘A good actor is also creative and he will be able to express the emotions suitable to character as written in the script.’

To Portray The Character From The ‘Doctor-Patient Relationship’

During the filming of ‘The Hospital’, Dai Li Ren was very much immersed in the character’s development and the scripting of the scenes. He emphasized that different doctors have various ways of treating sicknesses. This stems from their professional training. ‘The Internal Medicine and Surgical Departments are fundamentally different in their looking at illnesses. If considerations are not given as to how a doctor’s judgments would vary due to his professional training and the system on the whole, and how this in turn affects his character, how he faces problems then it is over-simplifying Good and Evil. The character would come across as flat and superficial. ’

‘I’ll use the crudest way to explain this. The two male leads – I play Doctor Qiu Qing Cheng who is stubborn and intrigued about ‘solving illness’. So his judgment might be viewed as cold and lacking in human concern. The Su Yi Hua played by Jerry Yan is just the opposite. He sees matters from a ‘human’ standpoint. He feels to cure illness, you must start from the person himself.’ In Dai Li Ren’s viewpoint, ‘There is no absolute Good and Evil. We are all the same. To live in this world, we each need to have a certain attitude, to believe that it is his own and to work hard at developing it. A bad guy like that would merit our attention and thus is worthy of our spending some time to try to understand him.’

Dai Li Ren doesn’t feel that Qiu Qing Cheng should be marked as the ‘Bad Guy’ in the show. ‘Though he might be embroiled in the power struggle but it is not because he is bad. Conversely in his mind, he has his own ideal, perfect world.’

He puts it plainly, ‘Be the power struggle in the medicine or corporate world, everyone would have a blue-print for their goals in their lives. So each would give their all to pursue and would step-by-step be closer to it in their minds’ ‘Beautiful, New World’. So I use this attitude to act out the character. Qiu Qing Cheng does not have ill-intentions and he never wanted to actually. That is why throughout the entire process he often feels very tired. From a certain angle, it is to enable things to be done in a better way. Yet compromise is necessary and in the end one has to ask, ‘What is the ideal world in your mind?’’

Therefore is the Ideal World still there in the minds of the characters? In the Realistic World, how would it be? Dai Li Ren ponders and adds, ‘I feel that Qiu Qing Cheng’s Ideal World is always existent. He wants to revolutionize the structure of the Medical World and so he needs greater capabilities and more power, So this is the beginning of the Power Struggle.’

New Break Through, New Possibilities

Starting from the character’s perspective, Dai Li Ren aims to protect and develop the character through making continuous changes. ‘When the production gets complicated and messy, how do I portray the character? It is extremely difficult. During filming when you alter certain things, you have to get the Director and others to accept the character’s changes and at the same time not affect the whole development of the show. Just this keeps one very busy.’ Dai Li Ren is thankful for the space to be able to do just that.

Having made so many attempts, how does he feel about the present and future of the Taiwanese TV scene? Does he have any views or expectations?

‘You should ask Director Chai this.’ Dai Li Ren laughs. He positively affirms Chai Yue Xun’s diligence. Many TV serials are shoddy and cannot compete with the Mainland serials. In fact they might not be anywhere in Asia as well. However Chai Yue Xun’s team insists on enormous capital backing and efforts to produce ‘The Hospital’. They sold the Japanese rights at a record price unprecedented in Taiwan. Even the 3 TV stations didn’t manage to reach certain areas and price, they could. Dai Li Ren extols, ‘Their hard work has caused everyone in the TV industry to open both their doors to them.’

Dai Li Ren ~ Chai Yue Xun’s Determination, Jerry Yan’s Diligence

Touching on Director Chai Yue Xun’s working style, Dai Li Ren is all praise. He laughs that amongst the many Directors that he has work with, Director Chai is the one who possesses ‘the most Japanese Samurai Spirit’. In his pursuit for perfection, he is almost to the point of punishing himself. Dai Li Ren observes, ‘To Chai Yue Xun, the entire production process is like a kind of fulfillment to a promise. Or perhaps it is like a way to fine tune oneself. He and Werner Jerzog are very similar in many ways - the kind that would move a ship over a mountain. You might say that he is wasting resources or is inflexible but it is this spirit that moves others. Every Director has his own style, yet he is one who is very sincere, very industrious and demanding on himself.’

When all eyes are on Jerry Yan, Dai Li Ren speaks frankly, ‘I have seldom seen an actor so hardworking, so earnest, hoping that he can do more and that is Jerry Yan. During the filming, it was evident how he got along with everyone, his communication with the Director and so on. After working with him for not too long, I felt that he is definitely an actor to be respected.’ [dl404: :D :D ]

In {The Hospital}, Jerry Yan Comprehends The Importance of Appreciation

Q1 : We heard that you spent a lot of time and effort preparing for the role. Mr. Hou Wen Yong also mentioned that you did a great deal of research. How did you understand and portray the character of Su Yi Hua?

A1: I recall that when I met the script-writer initially to discuss the character, Su Yi Hua, he brought out two photos. One was a little boy with a cheerful grin and the other was a white tower. He said that these represent Su Yi Hua and the White Tower so he is but an innocent little child. All of a sudden, I had a very intense feel for the character when I heard that. It was like I became Su Yi Hua during filming. I could feel how he had a simple life before he was unexpectedly pulled into the power struggle and lost the love of his life as well. In my portrayal, I have tried to transform myself into a real Su Yi Hua so that my performance can be true to life.


Q2 : Regarding your research for the performance, have you had any deep impressions or felt that any books were very helpful?

A2 : There are 2 books ~ [White Robe] and [A Surgical Doctor’s Training] .



Q3 : Most of actors had plenty of medical training before the shoot, could you talk about what left a deep impression on you during the training or maybe an interesting little story?

A3 : The Director and Big Brother Hou arranged practical lessons in surgery for me. The first was a brain surgery. When I saw how someone’s skull was cracked open, I was astounded. I really marvel at how incredible Medical Science is.



Q4 : Have you read Hou Wen Yong’s novel? Do you feel that the character is a great different from the original?

A4 : I liked it very much when I read it a long time ago. The script basically stays true to the novel. But The TV serial stresses more on the virtue of appreciation and so it is more heartfelt. The character of Su Yi Hua has a minor adjustment in terms of age, he is younger.


Q5 : Have you seen the Japanese version of ‘The Hospital’? If so, what are your afterthoughts?

A5 : I have not seen it.



Q6 : Could you talk about your relationship with the Director? After working with other Directors, in your own opinion, could you speak about the Director’s standards on the show, demands on performance style and other individual qualities?

A6 : It’s a luxury to work with Director Chai. Although it takes so much more time but it was all worth it. At times when I look at him, it was like I am looking into the mirror. Not that we are identical in appearance! It’s just rare to find someone who has the same undaunted demands on matters. I truly appreciate this. Director Chai is sensitive to the plot, the setting and arrangements of the characters, these are all necessary qualities of a successful Director!



Q7 : You’ve worked with Dai Li Ren, Wu Meng Da and many other actors, what is the most challenging or enjoyable moments? Would you like to share a few unforgettable stories?

A7 : Due to {The Hospital}, I feel so lucky to be able to work with so many experienced actors. Acting with them has inspired me like never before. Dai Li Ren plays my senior in the Medical School. We have many scenes together. I have always admired his acting and I was very excited that we are acting together. Actually before I met him, I’ve always thought of him as a very professional but serious actor. It was only after working with him that I discovered he was very humorous and quite a joker at times.

As for Wu Meng Da, I have seen many of his shows before. When I personally saw his performance for the first time, I was stunned by his outstanding performance. Even though he spoke Cantonese but you won’t feel that there is any language barrier. I remember a scene vividly. Big Brother Da plays a Surgical Chief who had lost his position and fell sick soon after. Su Yi Hua visited him in the hospital. In that scene, Big Brother really drew me into it and I felt I acted beyond my original expectations.


Q8 : When you were preparing for the role, would you use any character or actor as a model? Or would you follow certain aspects? Could you give an example?

A8 : Nothing special, just be natural.



Q9 : The filming of {The Hospital} has ended, do you feel that this experience has influenced you’re acting career in anyway? Any future wishes to handle any kind of challenging roles or theme?

A9 : In filming this show, I feel that it has absolutely exceeded any mere physical dimension. I have seen with my own eyes many real life and death situations. There might be a patient who had just passed away and yet over here is another baby born. This makes me feel how awesome Life is and I deeply understood how health and appreciation are very important.

It is a personal break-through to play this character. I had a totally different acting experience. But up till the end, it was really painful to be Su Yi Hua! When it came to an end, I joked with the Director, ‘I can finally be rid of Su Yi Hua!’ Ha ha!

Because this character is in deep turmoil, he was suffering in the power struggle. I hope that my next character would be more light-hearted in nature. A romantic love story or a comedy will do.



Q10 : How you feel that an actor can train himself on an everyday basis?

A10 : I feel that having a keen sense of observation is very crucial to an actor. I like to observe the people and things around me in my daily life. These will help in my renditions of different characters. I prefer a performance based on real emotions and not accustomed to contrived things. If there is time, I would like to look around overseas, there might be better choices and opportunities. I think that as an actor, the most feared are to lose the sensitivity of feel and a drained void within oneself.



Q11 : As an actor, you have been in the Taiwanese TV for a few years, how do you feel about the present and future of Taiwanese TV?

A11 : Since the success of ‘Meteor Garden’, Taiwanese TV had set a record throughout the whole of Asia. Many other TV serials have also been telecast in all parts of Asia. I feel that this is a good sign and opportunity. In fact, there are many exceptional people who work behind the scenes in Taiwanese TV. If only these can come together for a collaborative effort to produce a successful show, not just for the Taiwanese audience but for others as well. This is a dream that I hope to fulfill. I am very happy that ‘The Hospital’ has attracted loads of media attention and the audience’s enthusiastic concern. So I hope that everyone will like this show.



Q12 : Do you have a habit of reading normally? Does this influence your work in some ways?

A12 : Reading is a rather important pastime for me. I read during breaks in-between filming, long haul flights and before I sleep. The books I read vary widely. No limitations in terms of subjects matter. Reading has helped me a lot in work. I find that I am able to think objectively and is more clear-mined in my judgments of matters. My fans also know that I read so it feels nice when they often share good books with me.

Jun Matsumoto: I'm not the stupid Dao Ming Si"

When famous Japanese idol Jun Matsumoto went to Taiwan as guest at the Golden Melody Awards the other day, he the rest of the cast who acted in the "Meteor Garden " Japanese version will come again to Taiwan to promote its broadcast. Before he left to return to Japan, he was interviewd and talked about his own difference in playing the lead role "Dao Ming Si." He frankly said, " Im not really an idiot", that scared off his manager and he went out in cold sweat.

Jun Matsumoto only watched the original "Meteor Garden" anime when he was in high school and his elder sister is "Hua Zi Lei" fan. In the drama, he plays "Dao Ming Si" who madly chased the leading lady Shan Cai. Jun Matsumoto laughed and said, " He and I are distinctly different. I'm not that stupid, and also not that rich."

He was asked what he would do if he has all the money like that of Dao Ming Si. Jun Matsumoto reluctuntly smiled and said, "Buy an airplane! Because when I flew to Taiwan at this time, it is so cold plus I had to buy clothes to protect myself from the cold." The Taiwanese version of "Meteor Garden" gave fame to F4 and even more fame to "Dao Ming Si" Jerry Yan. However, Jun Matsumoto expressed that in order to keep his performance a unique one, he deliberately didnt watch the "Meteor Garden" Taiwanese version.

Jun Matsumoto promised that he and his "Arashi" boy band will come to Taiwan in autumn for a concert. He also wished that fans will be on time to watch "Meteor Garden" on July 20, 8 pm to cheer for him.

With rumors on "thousands of fans" Jerry Yan, Taiwan's first model Lin Zhi Lin, eventhough she had not directly talked about her feelings on Jerry, however, when she was in a local TV show the other day, and when a video footage of Jerry talking about his feelings was shown, she unexpectedly cried at the scene, causing the rumors to appear even more real than imaginary.


LZL repeatedly accepted local interviews in the past few days. With regards to the program's sudden showing of the Jerry interview footage, LZL just lightly said, "For me, if I really have a boyfriend, I certainly wish that he would look after my mom." Just after these words, she immediately bursted into tears, that even the host also got teary-eyed. The host then asked her again if Jerry can pursue her. LZL said," I really dont have time for that" (Did you try to pursue him?) I pursue him? I still havent got my card number yet, too many girls like him."

"Yan's" footage video on his feelings was shown, that led LZL to cry at the scene.

With rumors on "thousands of fans" Jerry Yan, Taiwan's first model Lin Zhi Lin, eventhough she had not directly talked about her feelings on Jerry, however, when she was in a local TV show the other day, and when a video footage of Jerry talking about his feelings was shown, she unexpectedly cried at the scene, causing the rumors to appear even more real than imaginary.


LZL repeatedly accepted local interviews in the past few days. With regards to the program's sudden showing of the Jerry interview footage, LZL just lightly said, "For me, if I really have a boyfriend, I certainly wish that he would look after my mom." Just after these words, she immediately bursted into tears, that even the host also got teary-eyed. The host then asked her again if Jerry can pursue her. LZL said," I really dont have time for that" (Did you try to pursue him?) I pursue him? I still havent got my card number yet, too many girls like him."

Until two weeks ago, I thought I had been spared from the scourge of Taiwanese boy band F4 because their TV show "Meteor Garden" came on at 5:30 p.m.—too early for me to even be curious about. I had heard (and abhorred) their songs on the radio and on that basis decided to shun further knowledge of their doings. I lived blissfully in my ignorance until my fifty-year-old aunt started raving about the charms of Vic, Ken, Jerry, and Vanness, members of F4. I knew then that the group was a pestilence on the order of SARS: you can wear a mask, but you can’t keep the germs out forever.

The last contagion of this magnitude was that Mexican telenovela, "Marimar." Well, Thalia has moved on to marry Sony Music president Sonny Mottola (ex-husband of Mariah Carey) and all we are left with are memories of Marimar’s catchy theme song: "Ma-ri-mar, awww! Basta may kasoy...."

But where "Marimar" was pang-masa, F4 appeals to a wider demography that includes teenagers of all economic brackets, twenty- and thirty-something professionals, Japanese, Indonesians, Thais. Their fans maintain numerous Web sites that feature disquisitions on Ken’s chiseled face and the nifty dance moves of Vanness. It’s enough to give you respiratory distress.

I must confess that I really can’t relate to this mania and I’m bound to slap anyone who dares to draw a comparison with the Fab Four. Sure, the F4 guys are good-looking and their being Asian probably makes them more accessible. It’s just that I can’t take guys with flyaway hair seriously. It’s bad enough that they can’t sing, but must they constantly flip their glossy manes and be prettier than me?

Still, a hit this huge can’t be ignored. Because of the phenomenal ratings of "Meteor Garden," ABS-CBN employees are reportedly getting 16th month bonuses. I had to see what the fuss was all about.

What can I say? It’s not the kind of telenovela I’m used to. The usual soap opera, as I’ve asserted before, involves infants exchanged at birth and the conflicts that ensue as a result of the mix-up. It involves grand plans of revenge for the theft of wealth or lovers. The standard melodrama ingredient present in "Meteor Garden" is class conflict, but only insofar as the story revolves around the poor heroine’s (Barbie Hsu as San Chai) love affair with one of the ultra-rich F4 characters (Jerry, I think).

This being a Taiwanese show, I expected the rich-poor dynamic to be dramatized by dialogue spiked with ideological innuendo and historical references: "You are a capitalist oppressor!" "And you are a proletarian Maoist traitor!" I braced myself for the inevitable plak! of a palm against a cheek, because slapping is to Pinoy dramas as brooding is to Scandinavian ouvres. But there was none.

In "Meteor Garden," there is mostly teenage angst, sexual tension, and a little humor. But when characters fight, they don’t merely slap or tussle, they pummel each other like it hurts. It’s like those melees that break out in Taiwan’s parliament now and then. In that sense, "Meteor Garden" is refreshing.

Before F4, all I knew about Taiwanese showbiz was Ang Lee, creator of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Wedding Banquet, Eat Drink Man Woman, and other splendid movies. I’m not brandishing my cineaste’s pretensions here; I am merely illustrating how my limited knowledge of Taiwanese arts failed to prepare me for the cheese pie that is F4. It’s probably the same for a foreigner who knows of the Philippines only through Mike de Leon’s works, then suddenly comes upon the Sex Bomb girls and their new TV show, "Daisy Siete." Discovering F4, I finally understood the message of the Sex Bomb song: I felt like "spaghetting pabababa, pabababa ng pabababa (spaghetti going down, down, and down)," until I hit the floor and stuck to the soles of passing shoes.

Beyond Taiwan, there is a genre called Canto pop, which is Hong Kong-generated but with a vast trans-border market. F4 falls loosely into this league, although it is a more generic Sino pop act (Canto is for Cantonese). Regrettably, much of Canto pop nowadays, like F4, is adapted American pop: gimmick and looks-driven, factory-produced teen idol acts.

One of the exceptions escaped from that mill and into art. Leslie Cheung was a hugely successful Canto pop star before he ventured into cinema, vivifying such classics as Chen Kaige’s Farewell My Concubine and Wong Kar Wai’s Happy Together. In the former, he played a Peking opera actor brutally trained from childhood to portray women’s roles. His performance was so exquisite, he outshone mainland diva Gong Li. In Happy Together, he was the heartless and irredeemable half of a gay couple stranded in Argentina. (He starred opposite another Hong Kong superstar Tony Leung, lately of Zhang Yimou’s Hero.) If you want an antidote to that sinking feeling generated by the F4 pandemic, watch Cheung in these two films and bask in the benediction of true talent.

Last April 1, Leslie Cheung jumped from the 24th floor of the famed Mandarin Hotel of Hong Kong. He had been depressed for a long time, his partner said, one of the reasons being that he was unsatisfied with his accomplishments. That’s the irony here. Great artists feel inadequate and hurl themselves from skyscrapers, while boy bands flourish to torment us with their mediocrity.

When two of the F4 members visited Manila, I felt like checking into their hotel like some of their fans did. So I could push both of them out the windows, of course.

Opinion: Absurdia

Until two weeks ago, I thought I had been spared from the scourge of Taiwanese boy band F4 because their TV show "Meteor Garden" came on at 5:30 p.m.—too early for me to even be curious about. I had heard (and abhorred) their songs on the radio and on that basis decided to shun further knowledge of their doings. I lived blissfully in my ignorance until my fifty-year-old aunt started raving about the charms of Vic, Ken, Jerry, and Vanness, members of F4. I knew then that the group was a pestilence on the order of SARS: you can wear a mask, but you can’t keep the germs out forever.

The last contagion of this magnitude was that Mexican telenovela, "Marimar." Well, Thalia has moved on to marry (http://www.tsinoy.com/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=452403#) Sony Music president Sonny Mottola (ex-husband of Mariah Carey (http://www.tsinoy.com/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=452403#)) and all we are left with are memories of Marimar’s catchy theme song: "Ma-ri-mar, awww! Basta may kasoy...."

But where "Marimar" was pang-masa, F4 appeals to a wider demography that includes teenagers of all economic brackets, twenty- and thirty-something professionals, Japanese, Indonesians, Thais. Their fans maintain numerous Web sites that feature disquisitions on Ken’s chiseled face and the nifty dance moves of Vanness. It’s enough to give you respiratory distress.

I must confess that I really can’t relate to this mania and I’m bound to slap anyone who dares to draw a comparison with the Fab Four. Sure, the F4 guys are good-looking and their being Asian probably makes them more accessible. It’s just that I can’t take guys with flyaway hair seriously. It’s bad enough that they can’t sing, but must they constantly flip their glossy manes and be prettier than me?

Still, a hit this huge can’t be ignored. Because of the phenomenal ratings of "Meteor Garden," ABS-CBN employees are reportedly getting 16th month bonuses. I had to see what the fuss was all about.

What can I say? It’s not the kind of telenovela I’m used to. The usual soap opera, as I’ve asserted before, involves infants exchanged at birth and the conflicts that ensue as a result of the mix-up. It involves grand plans of revenge for the theft of wealth or lovers. The standard melodrama ingredient present in "Meteor Garden" is class conflict, but only insofar as the story revolves around the poor heroine’s (Barbie Hsu as San Chai) love affair with one of the ultra-rich F4 characters (Jerry, I think).

This being a Taiwanese show, I expected the rich-poor dynamic to be dramatized by dialogue spiked with ideological innuendo and historical references: "You are a capitalist oppressor!" "And you are a proletarian Maoist traitor!" I braced myself for the inevitable plak! of a palm against a cheek, because slapping is to Pinoy dramas as brooding is to Scandinavian ouvres. But there was none.

In "Meteor Garden," there is mostly teenage angst, sexual tension, and a little humor. But when characters fight, they don’t merely slap or tussle, they pummel each other like it hurts. It’s like those melees that break out in Taiwan’s parliament now and then. In that sense, "Meteor Garden" is refreshing.

Before F4, all I knew about Taiwanese showbiz was Ang Lee, creator of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Wedding Banquet, Eat Drink Man Woman, and other splendid movies. I’m not brandishing my cineaste’s pretensions here; I am merely illustrating how my limited knowledge of Taiwanese arts failed to prepare me for the cheese pie that is F4. It’s probably the same for a foreigner who knows of the Philippines only through Mike de Leon’s works, then suddenly comes upon the Sex Bomb girls and their new TV show (http://www.tsinoy.com/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=452403#), "Daisy Siete." Discovering F4, I finally understood the message of the Sex Bomb song: I felt like "spaghetting pabababa, pabababa ng pabababa (spaghetti going down, down, and down)," until I hit the floor and stuck to the soles of passing shoes.

Beyond Taiwan, there is a genre called Canto pop, which is Hong Kong-generated but with a vast trans-border market. F4 falls loosely into this league, although it is a more generic Sino pop act (Canto is for Cantonese). Regrettably, much of Canto pop nowadays, like F4, is adapted American pop: gimmick and looks-driven, factory-produced teen idol acts.

One of the exceptions escaped from that mill and into art. Leslie Cheung was a hugely successful Canto pop star before he ventured into cinema, vivifying such classics as Chen Kaige’s Farewell My Concubine and Wong Kar Wai’s Happy Together. In the former, he played a Peking opera actor brutally trained from childhood to portray women’s roles. His performance was so exquisite, he outshone mainland diva Gong Li. In Happy Together, he was the heartless and irredeemable half of a gay couple stranded in Argentina. (He starred opposite another Hong Kong superstar Tony Leung, lately of Zhang Yimou’s Hero.) If you want an antidote to that sinking feeling generated by the F4 pandemic, watch Cheung in these two films and bask in the benediction of true talent.

Last April 1, Leslie Cheung jumped from the 24th floor of the famed Mandarin Hotel of Hong Kong. He had been depressed for a long time, his partner said, one of the reasons being that he was unsatisfied with his accomplishments. That’s the irony here. Great artists feel inadequate and hurl themselves from skyscrapers, while boy bands flourish to torment us with their mediocrity.

When two of the F4 members visited Manila, I felt like checking into their hotel like some of their fans did. So I could push both of them out the windows, of course.

Jerry in "The Hospital showed huge improvement, but because
of the many veteran actors, the industry worries his performance
might be outshined.


Yesterday evening, The Hospital Episode One was previewed and praised by the Film and TV staff. However, up to now, on the original July playdate, "The Hospital" had yielded only about 2 edited episodes long. Onlookers believe that with this speed, it can't keep up with the scheduled airing. For this reason, many think that they would have to wait at least until September to watch "The Hospital."


At first, rumors spread that because of Zai Zai's "Silence" , Jerry's "The Hospital" was blocked and wasnt able to be released. Studio Projects Director Fang Ke Ren said that The Hospital and idol dramas viewer groups should be different, It is unlikely for an idol drama to have a 10 pm Sunday slot. However, in mainland China, the 8pm slot for sex-oriented dramas has also not been considered to change. Presently, it can only be confirmed that they wont be able to air it for summer.

The Hospital director Cai Yue Xun. together with Ju You Ning and Niu Cheng Ze, are the industry's big three " Extra-Sharp Directors". For his location scenes, Cau Yue Xun attends to every detail from light, music and his actors's performances. Jerry exerted much in his performance in "The Hospital" and to his love scenes with Janine Zhang, luring many fans to cry already. However, the industry also thinks that there are too many senior veteran actors in the drama, and is afraid that they might outshine his giant star glitter.

what a hilarious article (Apple Daily, 14/6) . a new series (White Robe on Love) is due to be shown, starring male lead Dylan Guo as a hospital doctor. so a comparison was made between WR & White Tower. what crap to compare the 2. WR completed filming in 3-4 months & its main focus is abt the love life of the doctor. WT took almost 9 months to complete & its focus is abt the dark side of a hospital & the struggle of ethics. White Robe per episode production costs NT$1.5 million, WT per episode production costs NT$3 million.

since WR very obviously cant be compared to WT whether in terms of storyline, budget, casting or publicity, the producer of WR state that his male lead, Dylan Guo (186cm), is taller than WT male lead, Jerry Yan (180cm) makes me wonder is the guy talking abt tv series or who is taller competition. what a joke .

According to Lian He Bao today, The Hospital will be broadcasted in TW on CTV on August 15, 8pm.

According to TW Apple Daily, CTV wants to broadcast it by the end of August, at the 8pm time slot, but Director Cai wants to broadcast it at the 9:30pm time slot. The actual broadcast time has not been decided.

Yesterday, the media were invited to review the first episode of The Hospital and Director Cai commented that in The Hospital, Jerry was not an idol any more, he is an actor now.

In The Hospital, the gentle professional actor, Yan Cheng Xu, laughed so hard until his mouth changed shape and burped in public getting rid of the burden of being an idol


Because of The Hospital, Yan Cheng Xu got rid of the burden of being an idol. He laughed so hard that his mouth changed shape, burped in public, and even held a teddy bear pretending to be cute. After seeing the multi-sided Bao Long, even the director Cai Yue Xun said, "He is not an idol any more. He is an actor now."

In the drama, Yan Cheng Xu played the primary physican of the President's daughter which was played by Saya. Saya played the one who had Leukemia. In order to cheer her up, Yan Cheng Xu held a teddy bear pretending to be cute and said," No pain no pain. The surgery will be over instantly." This made Saya smile immediately.

Later, because of the power struggle in the hospital, the Su Yi Hua played Yan Cheng Xu was excluded from the surgery. When he watched the press conference on tv hosted by the Chief Surgeon who replaced his position, he laughed very hard until his mouth changed shape, finished drinking the red bean soup, then he even burped in front of a whole group of people.

The director, Cai Yue Xun indicates, "The original Su Yi Hua was more passive. My Su Yi Hua is more enthusiastic and very optimistic. After created this "laugh" with Bao Long, I am amazed that he could laugh like that."

When Yan Cheng Xu acted in The Hospital, he totally fulfilled all the requirements. For instance, there was a scene when he left Guan Xin's (played by Zhang Jun Ning) home, as he was too sad and he didn't pay attention, he lost his balance and fell down the stairs. Bao Long insisted to play the scene himself. Cai Yue Xun remembered, "The stairs were as high as a person's height. When he tripped over, his whole body flew down the stairs. I was shocked. Really scary!"

The Hospital did not just give pressure to Yan Cheng Xu, once, even Cai Yue Xun could continue directing only by continuous drinking. "I found out that once I sat in the director's chair, I could not get up. I was like a dead body. I couldn't move until I had a drink. I told Xiao Wei if anyone got hurt, I would stop from that moment." Cai Yue Xun was afraid that the team noticed his behaviors and got worried, he secretly put the alcohol in the bottle for Onlong Tea. Yu Xiao Wei was worried and mad at the same time, and she told him, "You are Cai Yue Xun. You can't act like this."

The production fee of The Hospital which has 25 episodes and 90 minutes for each episode is over 80 millions in total, with the average of over 3 millions per episode.

Yu Xiao Wei couldn't help sighing when she talked about the edited 18-minute opening scene, "That was a scene to challenge the limit of TW's drama history. That was the scene of a large-scale emergency operation played by Dai Li Ren. He edited it without even blinking his eyes. That scene costed about 1 million dollars! " The Hospital is scheduled to be broadcasted on CTV, August 15, 8pm.
