F4 may be the first Mandarin pop band that all of Asia can love. And they`re helping to make Chinese culture cool

Sept. 22 issue ¡X Many southeast Asians are full of worries about China, ranging from the effects of the region`s new trade pact to how to compete with Beijing for foreign investment. But for tens of millions of young Asians, there is a far more burning question at hand: who is the cutest member of F4¡XJerry, Vic, Ken or Vanness?

THE BOY-BAND pop singers may be Taiwanese, but they sing in Mandarin and have Southeast Asia deep in the throes of a love affair with all things Chinese. Says Indonesian entertainment executive Daniel Tumiwa: ¡§Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, Hong Kongers. For ordinary people here, it doesn`t matter; it`s just Chinese to them. It makes no difference. F4 is huge, huge, huge.¡¨

Not to mention hot, hot, hot. F4 is the first Mandarin pop band to win a devoted¡Xsome would say fanatic¡Xpan-Asian audience. In many places, they are even bigger than the local acts¡Xhighly unusual in Asia`s widely segmented music market. Pop tastes in east Asia have traditionally been split, with the north looking to Japan and Hong Kong, and the south to their home markets. F4 has radically altered the equation. They¡¦ve sold 3.5 million albums¡Xan astonishing number on a continent where pirated CDs are the norm. In Manila last week, ¡Xfans paid up to $200¡Xthe equivalent of several months` salary¡Xto see F4 members sing and dance live. Their faces loom large on billboards advertising Pepsi along Bangkok¡¦s expressways. On streets throughout the region, children can be heard belting F4 lyrics in passable Mandarin. ¡§This is the first time I¡¦ve ever seen a group actually conquering all markets here,¡¨ says Mishal Varma, Singapore-based vice president for talent relations at MTV Asia. ¡§No one else has crossed over the way they have.¡¨

Their staggering appeal is not easy to explain¡Xeven among music experts. A la ¡¥N Sync, they don¡¦t play any instruments and they are not great singers. Few people even know what they¡¦re singing about. But the four twentysomething band members¡XJerry Yan, Vic Zhou, Ken Zhu and Vanness Wu¡Xbelt out frothy tunes with a bubble-gum beat, and possess clean-cut good looks that have landed them on magazine covers, posters, key chains, T shirts and the bedroom walls of countless teenage girls. Indeed, their most committed fans know not just their birth dates but their blood types as well. They seem to possess that elusive blend of charisma and good timing that strikes only rarely among musicians. ¡§In life, there comes only one Elvis Presley, one Ricky Martin, one F4,¡¨ says Varma.

Their wholesome image is a big selling point. In person, the bandmates tend to be exceptionally polite. During an interview, Wu, the only F4 member who speaks fluent English, tosses off lines like, ¡§The Vanness dream is to take care of my family one day so they don¡¦t have to work so hard.¡¨ Such emphasis on family values plays well with young Asians. ¡§F4 represents something they can aspire to within reach,¡¨ says Ian Stewart, CEO of The Filter Group, an Asian trend consultancy. ¡§Compared with Robbie Williams, Asians can connect more with F4.¡¨

The band¡¦s rise began with ¡§Meteor Garden,¡¨ a slick television drama launched in Taiwan two years ago. Based on a Japanese comic book, the series revolves around a group of Taiwanese students nicknamed F4¡X¡¨Flower Four¡¨¡Xbecause they are so pretty. The show, massively popular in Taiwan, also turned into a runaway hit on Southeast Asian TV when dubbed or subtitled in local languages.

The program ran for two seasons. Like many Asian actors, the four boys also sang and danced. They quickly released two albums under Sony Music, and began playing to sellout crowds from Hong Kong to Manila. Today, in addition to touring, making TV appearances and hanging out together, the members are also busy working on solo careers. ¡§We want to grow,¡¨ says Wu, who just finished shooting his first film, a Hong Kong martial arts movie.

Wu laughs when asked if he feels famous. Three years ago, he was living in his native Los Angeles (he is named after the famous street in L.A. and San Francisco) and working as a customer-service rep for a phone company. Then he decided to indulge his passion and pursue a show-business career in Taiwan, where his parents were born. For the first year, he slept on friends¡¦ couches in Taipei. Now, though he¡¦s glad to have his own place, he says the band is still adjusting to its stardom. ¡§We had ¡Xnever met until ¡¥Meteor Garden¡¦,¡¨ he says. ¡§Our personalities are so different, which is probably why our fans like us.¡¨ Indeed, there seems to be something for everyone. Wu says he thinks he¡¦s seen as the extrovert, Jerry Yan is the funny but mercurial one, Vic Zhou is quiet but ¡§off the wall¡¨ and Ken Zhu is ¡§cool and collected¡Xbut a deep thinker.¡¨

The members have turned into unwitting ambassadors for greater China. Thanks largely to F4, Thais, Filipinos and Indonesians¡Xnot generally known for their interest in contemporary Chinese culture¡Xare embracing it with a vengeance. In Jakarta, ¡§There is growing acceptance that Chinese boys are good looking,¡¨ says Tumiwa. ¡§It¡¦s quite a shift here.¡¨ Indonesia has had a checkered history with its Chinese population, highlighted by anti-Chinese riots and targeted violence. Now, the only mobs are those lining up to see F4 perform in concert. Young people are adopting F4¡¦s style of dress, which tends to be casual with a flair, such as tight jeans and fitted white shirts. Fans have also copied their trademark long hairstyles. Says Bangkok hotel clerk Praphaphorn Sithuha, an admitted F4 fanatic: ¡§F4 has good style, they sing well and are very funny.¡¨

The band members have also sparked an unlikely interest in the Mandarin language. ¡§Now my workers are listening to Chinese songs all day long,¡¨ says Charlie Clement, a flower-farm owner in the central Philippines. ¡§They sing along but don¡¦t understand.¡¨ At least one is going even further; Thai fan Praphaphorn has a friend who was so inspired by the group that she enrolled in Chinese language lessons.

Not surprisingly, everyone is trying to discover the next F4. TV executives in Manila, for example, have been snapping up other Taiwanese soaps, like ¡§Lavender¡¨ and ¡§MVP Valentine.¡¨ In Jakarta, the Taiwan all-male hip-hop group Energy, which also sings only in Mandarin, has been performing to packed crowds. ¡§They have good music,¡¨ says Harry Hui, Asia president for Universal Music. ¡¨[But] teenagers in Southeast Asia don¡¦t yet think of China as a source of cool.¡¨ Just give them time.

CHAPTER 1 (Part 1)


Dr. Su Yi Hua just entered the building, while taking the lift, he noticed men in suites with radio. He stepped
out of the elevator and proceed directly into his room wherein his research assistant is waiting for him.
Professor Xu Da Ming has been looking for him and has called three times says his assistant. He offered
Dr. So some coffee but he said he didn’t want one. He was very disturbed why Professor Xu kept calling
so he called him back at once. The professor wanted to congratulate him about the article he has written
in a magazine on dealing with implanting Infusion on Central Vein and its complication. It was well written
according to the professor and he wanted Dr. Su to perform a surgery on the President’s daughter Chen Xin Yu.
Professor Xu told him if he noticed some men in suites loitering the hallway. The reason behind is that the
President is at the 15th floor visiting his one and only daughter. Professor Xu brought Dr. Su along with him
to meet Chen Xin Yu. The president’s daughter asked him if it would create a big scar on her chest, and
Dr. Su said he will do his best not to put a big scar on her and that she be rest assured that the operation
would be very minor. After introducing Dr. Su to the President himself and his wife, they all exited the room.
The President called on Dr. Su and asked him to do his best for this is her only daughter and they wouldn’t
want anything to happen to her. The president and his wife made a 90 degree-bow at Dr. Su to thank him for
his extra care on their daughter. Dr. Su was shocked and asked them not to be that courteous.

Inside the operating room, Ming Zhu the head nurse is whispering to her staff that Dr. Tang Guo Tai is in one
of his bad moods. Dr. Tang Guo Tai heard this and told Ming Zhu to stop gossiping about him. He said that
he’s surrounded with “food garbage” everywhere even his patient is a food garbage. His patient wasn’t
supposed to drink Chinese Medicine that led to this major operation. Dr. Tang kept on babbling on and on
about being a “food garbage” and as he operates his patient. Nurse Ming Zhu told him to calm down and
she’ll make him a cup of coffee after this operation. Dr. Tang shouted to another staff and said: “Take all
of these garbage and give it to his family members, and tell them if this one dies I will not be responsible for
it! Seven words! I won’t be responsible for his death!” Dr. Tang then added: “Food Garbage! I bet he won’t
have the guts to tell those to the family members, then what’s doing as a surgeon?” he retorted. Dr. Lai Cheng Xu
passed by the Operating Room, Dr. Tang called him and asked him if he really is an anaesthesiologist, the
stomach of the patient is too hard to sew and it’s taking up Dr. Tang’s coffee time. Dr. Lai said: “If we
add more flaccid it will affect his revival after this surgery.” Dr. Tang: “How I end this surgery is my business,
you find something that will make his stomach flesh soft. Didn’t you have this quick-softener that you asked
me to help you get one? It was so expensive and I don’t know how many have you used, now that I’m in
trouble you can’t help me with that?”

This is one of Guan Xin’s hectic days, she is a petite girl with a pretty face, her hair is rolled and tied up. She
is usually mistaken as a nurse due to her appearance. She went inside a room and greeted her patient. She’s
an anaesthesiologist, she usually talks to her patient, understands its condition before going through anaesthesia.
She thoroughly checked the patient and along with her intern, she assisted Guan Xin for this anaesthesizing the
patient. As they thought the process would be very smooth, the patient start convulsing and the intern was very
shocked, she kept on memorizing on how to do this process but she was very nervous that she forgot all of it.
Guan Xin asked her to find the trachea but due to panic she can only see the tongue. Guan Xin assisted her and
told her that the throat mirror is not that deep that’s why she can’t see the trachea. The intern asked: “Dr. Guan,
you haven’t seen the situation but how do you know that I’ve been holding the throat mirror in the wrong position?
” Guan Xin said: “Wait until you finish your study and you’ll know.” At last they finished the task and Guan Xin
asked her: “Quick question, what if you poked the patient and she said ouch, what would you do?” The intern said
many things and Guan Xin interrupted: “How could the patient do that if she’s under anaesthesia?
” They both laughed and continued their work.

“Dr. Guan, can you please proceed to Operating Room No. 3 and help Dr. Lai? Dr. Tang is complaining that the patient’s
stomach is too hard to sew.” Guan Xin is still approaching O.R. no. 3 saying: “I heard that Dr. Tang is performing a
surgery and the stomach can’t be sealed, he’s going berserk in OR 3.” Dr. Tang retorted: “I thought you called
for help but you instead called a mad woman to save you.”

“Dr. Tang, don’t tell me you’re dragging this surgery left and right it’s like the whole world wants to say sorry to you.”

“Ask your head, I’ve been trying to seal this thing here and because the flesh is too hard I can’t finish my surgery.
Just take a look at this mess, I didn’t ask for a magic for it to soften, what kind of service is this?”

“Alright headmaster, this is your flaccid” Guan Xin raised the injection and said: “Other doctors want it 10mg only,
I’ll give you more time 40 mg and it will last for an hour or so, you can perform seal the stomach as long as you
want, now are you satisfied?”

“I didn’t ask you to put that much!”

Dr. Guan injected the whole dose and it the whole room was silent. The nurse told Dr. Tang that she’ll wait for him
at the lounge for coffee.
The intern asked Dr. Guan: “You really injected that much? How will it be for the guy if he wakes up?” Dr. Guan
smiled and said: “Don’t worry, I only injected 4cc of Salt water and not the flaccid.”

“So, Dr. Tang did the stomach soften?” Dr. Tang was so angry that he didn’t mutt a word. The intern told Guan
Xin that she was very brave because no one dared to utter a thing to Dr. Tang but she did. Guan Xin explained that
she didn’t think of attaining a higher position so what’s the big deal sucking up to him.


At the lounge, the nurse and Dr. Tang had their cup of coffee. Dr. Tang kept on muttering on having a hard time.
He blurted out that he lost his face because a new nurse held tantrums inside the operating room and the head of
the Hospital still didn’t let her go. The nurse told him not to bother those little things because as long as she’s
the head nurse, she won’t allow that girl to be inside his operating room. Dr. Tang told her that the young ones
nowadays are different. Before, he went to the US and his boss told him to take care of the guinea pig for laboratory
use. Every time he calls overseas, he asks about the guinea pigs and not about his family. The nurse changed the
topic and asked him what he thinks Dr. Qiu Qing Cheng. Dr. Tang said: “He’s too smart you see. There will come
a time that he’ll also outsmart me.”

Dr. Su and Dr. Chen Kuan Yi rushed through the doors and the nurse asked what does he think of both of them.
“Those two? I don’t know what kind of attitude the have.” Pointing to Su Yi Hua, “This guy, he has the talents,
but he doesn’t know his limitation, one day someone will deal with him.”
“Speaking of Su Yi Hua, he will be the one to handle the operation of that precious girl upstairs.”
“You asked me to come because of this? I don’t even perform minor surgeries, if Dr. Su wanted to do the surgery
then let him be.”
”But you know that President Zhao will be retiring, and to think you are the head of the Surgery department and
Asst. Head of the Operating Room, Dr. Xu Da Ming has assigned Dr. Su to perform surgery on the President’s daughter.”
“How did you know that?”
”I have many birds, birds flow right through me and tell me secrets. You’re old, really old that you let anybody
ride on you. You never thought of making actions before anything happen.” The nurse continued: “Who here
doesn’t know that Dr. Zhao is retiring. Will you wait until Dr. Xu Da Ming gains the position and take advantage of you?”

After the nurse left, Dr. Tang called Dr. Zhao. He asked Dr. Zhao why he wasn’t informed about the case of
Chen Xin Yu. Dr. Zhao said it’s not good to discuss it through phone but Dr. Tang is in the middle of another
surgery so they settled to discuss it through phone. Dr. Tang said: “Dr Su will do the surgery for Chen Xin Yu
are you kidding me? Don’t you know that his Central Vein Infusion is performed unsafely.”
“Unsafe?” Dr. Zhao added, “Isn’t his article about Central Vein Infusion a marvelous article and it says
that it lessens complications for about .02-.03% as well?”
“You and I know it best that out of these 20-30 people he operated only a few had complications.”

“But Dr. Xu is confident about it and the president has met…”

“Who is the head of the Surgery department me or Dr. Xu”

“But it’s Dr. Xu’s patient so can both of you work together and help Chen Xin Yu?”

“It’s Dr. Xu who didn’t approach me on this.”

CHAPTER 1, Part Two


Dr. Tang continued: "Let me tell you this, remember that time
when Chang Yi Ru's X-Ray didn't come out? The case was passed
to me and I accepted it and even helped you hide it from everyone."

Dr. Zhao: "So you say you're blackmailing me?"

"I just wanted you to know, headmaster, do not forget who kept
on helping you in times of trouble." Dr. Tang shifted from his seat.
"Remember when you retire, the one who will be chosen as the
head of this hospital's committee will always be walking with a
red carpet and holds the key to all decision-makings. Right now
you let Xu Da Ming ride under your nose, whatever happens
inside the operating room, the Surgery department will not be
responsible. In addition to that, won't you be assured that the
Surgery Department would save you, unless you don't want
your candidate to be elected."

"So what do you think we should do?"

"I won't be bothering the surgery of Dr. Xu Da Ming's patient,
but if surgery is needed, these things must be under my decision,
and he need not bother to make decisions for me."

"Old Tang, what's happening between you and Dr. Xu did not
just start in a day or two. I'm retiring, and I can't supervise
whatever it is you both want to do. But please give me some
face and help Chen Xin Yu. And please, do not operate beyond
this hospital okay?"

"Don't worry, Chen Xin Yu will be alright."

"Okay then, I'll pretend this conversation never happened and
I didn't know what you're up to."

Dr. Tang dialed Qiu Qing Cheng's office but he's not there,
he demands for Qiu Qing Cheng to call him at once.

Dr. Su just got back to his office after surgery, his assistant has
left him scribbled notes and his desk is filled with newsletters
and medical magazines. He opened his computer and suddenly
the phone rang.

"This is Su Yi Hua."

"At last it's you! Hi this is CTS reporter Ma Yu Fen, remember me?"

Su Yi Hua remembered this lady, strands of soft shoulder-length hair.
It was that time when he was still researching about Central Vein
Infusion that this reporter walked-in and reported on the development.
It helped the hospital to gain more patients as the development
was spread throughout.

"I heard that you will be performing an implantation on the President's
daughter tomorrow?"

"Where did you get that news." Su Yi Hua was surprised.

"My news come from everywhere, if you don't believe me then ask
yourself again."

Su Yi Hua laughed: "You're still interested in this minor surgery?"

"It matters if you'll implant it on whom." She said, "So you're sure
that tomorrow's operation you'll be there?" Dr. Su was a little bit confused.

"Are you sure it isn't Dr. Tang?"

"It's Internal Medicine Professor Xu who asked me to do it.
What's up? Is there something wrong?"

"Oh nothing." Ma Yu Fen added "What are the chances of Chen Xin
Yu after the surgery, will there be hope for her?" Su Yi Hua was quiet
for a moment, "You should ask Professor Xu about this matter."

"It looks like tomorrow's full of surprises." Ma Yu Fen hanged-up and
told her cameraman: "Tomorrow we'll be off by 7am, okay?"

"The surgery will be performed by Dr. Su Yi Hua am I right?" asked
the cameraman, "Then why would Tang Guo Tai inform that he will
hold a press conference tomorrow and even said it doesn't involve Su Yi Hua?"

"That's why this is more interesting. Mr. Wang from the President's
office assured me it will be Dr. Su who will perform the operation."

Dr. Su's office became so empty, he stared at his monitor, then started
to reserve the operation room for tomorrow's surgery. He clicked for
Operation Room No. 3, Eight O' Clock and Operation name: Port-A Cath
implantation. He saw that the name of surgeon is disabled and he thought
it might be a computer error or maybe Dr. Xu decided
not to tell anyone who's performing the surgery. He continued to choose
the other staffs including the nurses that would assist him. At the end
of the list, he is about to choose an anaesthesiologist—Guan Xin.

Doctors are very sure when it comes to Guan Xin as their anaesthesiologist,
but seeing her name, Dr. Su cannot concentrate. It's like when you browse
a document and you couldn't see anything but you can spot the name
GUAN XIN right away. It doesn't matter how soft spoken she is, it can
make you feel uneasy. He tried to call her but Guan Xin is not yet home.
He hanged-up and looked at his watch.

He browsed through the website and saw some pictures and came across
an old picture of both of them by the beach. It was windy that day and they
were supposed to be having a testing on worms. That was their first picture
and it was taken 10 years ago. One of their classmates noticed that his film
is almost full so he took the last shot of both of them. Su Yi Hua smiled and
opened the next picture. It was also taken on a beach and Guan Xin still wears
a big sunglass. Even before, she's naturally thin, but her face is very pretty
that's indescribable. He looked at more pictures and came across a picture
taken in the airport when both of them went to Hua Lian, he was an intern then.

The monitor flashed and indicated "You've got message."

The message says:
Chen Xin Yu's surgery will have a big turn around, please contact your friend
Guan Xin.
--From [your friend]

Dr. Su was surprised, he saw that this came from an internet café and he
kept on thinking who is [Your Friend] and what major turn around will happen
the next day. He waited for 8pm and called Guan Xin.

"Guan Xin, this is Su Yi Hua. Did you email me a while ago?"

"I did? I've been very busy until now and I just got inside." It's not Guan Xin.

"I've been looking for you all over, I wanted to ask you to do something
for me," Dr. Su continued, "Tomorrow I will be performing a surgery at
Operating Room No. 3, it's a Port-A Cath Implantation, it's your patient…
" Guan Xin said, "It's Chen Xin Yu right?"

"How did you know?"

"I've been busy until now just because of her."

"You've seen her?"

"I don't know what kind of god is she, I took my anesthesia form and
visited her, then I've been blocked by bodyguards at the 15th floor.
" Guan Xin was getting irritated that time, "and then, your department's
Asst. Head Qiu Qing Cheng came by and said to take care of her, he said
she's a very important patient, he asked me to take extra care of her."

"What's Qiu Qing Cheng got to do with this?" Su Yi Hua came to a pause,
"But nevertheless, please, please. I've made my promise to Chen Xin Yu
to find the best anesthesiologist for her."

"You've approached the best anesthesiologist, but I know who the patient
I'm responsible for and you don't need to beg me to take extra special care on her?"

Su Yi Hua made a pause. "You've met the president himself?"

"Oh, all you from Surgery Department are very naïve. During normal days
we can't find you anywhere, now that the Emperor's flag has arrived,
everybody wants a piece of it."

He met Guan Xin when they were still students. In those times the School
Headmasters are willing to shell out money for researches, they let their
students travel to other places and serve as an intern at the same time.
They were to observe on some crime scene investigation autopsy. He
and Guan Xin are in the 2nd group of the training class and that's when
he met her. One time the class was so boring that you could sleep. Out
of boredom he wrote on his notebook: Guan Xin is exactly seated beside
me, he continued with a sheepish grin: I remembered, you went back to
your hometown, you're fixing your long hair or your wet clothes when I came by.

They grew fond of each other. There was one time when they rode this
motorcycle to the beach. It was dark then when they arrived. They both
sat on the sand and listened to the waves. Maybe it's the wind that made
her hair brush through Su Yi Hua's side, he made a move and kissed her
face. That was his first kiss. After that kiss, he wasn't sure what will to do
next. Guan Xin stood up and walked on the sand. Su Yi Hua unconsciously
walked behind her. They strolled for how long he didn't bother to know,
Guan Xin turned around and told him like she's making up a poem:
"O, if it is the sea you like, then it's not suitable to be near her through a picture."

Su Yi Hua remembered those lines, but he never understood the
meaning of it. That was the only time they got close. After that they
just became the best of friends.

After graduation, Su Yi Hua became an intern at Hua Lian, Guan Xin
started her Medical study. He heard that many doctors in Hua Lian wanted
Guan Xin's services, but nothing came of it. Then Guan Xin went to
Hua Lian to visit him. While at the airport sending off Guan Xin to Taipei,
Su Yi Hua held both of Guan Xin's hands, she didn't resist and even held
on tighter, and said to him: "Write some letters to me."

Those hands were invisible as she went through inside, but still he can
see the wave of her hand, Su Yi Hua heard her very jolly voice saying:
"See you, don't forget to write me many many letters."

So he did, he wrote to Guan Xin everyday, they corresponded for one year.

CHAPTER 1 (Part Three)


Then one day Guan Xin's good friend Wang Shu Xian went to Hua Lian
and visited him. "She arranged these for you and wanted me to give
them to you personally." Su Yi Hua opened the bag, there were lots of
pictures of them, pictures taken years ago including Su Yi Hua's letters
to Guan Xin.

"She found her better half?" Asked Su Yi Hua.

"It's not what you think," Shu Zhen nodded, "She wants me to tell you,
you need not treat her that way, she doesn't deserve it."

Su Yi Hua was never updated about Guan Xin. Only when he returned
to the Hospital did he know that Guan Xin was in the anesthesiology
department. That time they became the frequent in-house doctors.
When they met they only discussed medical matters, still old friends
but nothing special.

Sometimes Su Yi Hua would open these pictures. He thought if not for
these pictures, he would have doubts of their past.

Tang Guo Tai dragged his heavy feet and walked to his condo unit near
the hospital. For almost ten years, he walked this way to and from work.
Before he went to the US, he was just a small time poor medical student,
he and his wife and kid lived in a house less than 20sqm. Before going
to the US, they bought a house down don't Hua South Road together with
his classmates. That time he was already 35 years old, he still lived a
humble life with his wife and kids, while the others have acquired splendid
houses. He kept on thinking and wondering for what he has now.

When the Assistant Professor was promoted, he had the chance to come
back from the US. That time, Old Professor is outside performing a surgery,
if he is too busy he would ask for his help. It doesn't matter if it's day or
late at night, whenever Tang Guo Tai receives a phone call, he would
immediately leave everything and take a cab to the professor. He never
heard the old professor thank him, until the year came and the professor
was promoted, he gave him a trust envelope containing 10,000 bills.
"Buy your wife and kids some gifts." The professor said this in Niponggo.

He was able to receive something from others. Old Professor also let him
perform surgery by himself, he can observe patients on his own, receive
big and small amount of donations from patients. This time value does not
count anymore, but it wasn't like that before.

For twenty years Tang Guo Tai has been with this place, had his second son,
was promoted to professor, and became the head of the Surgery Department.
Every new year he holds a party for his colleagues. They all come and have
a good time. He loves to see his students drink and gain confidence on
themselves, hearing them brag on how they deal with their patients. These
were his students who were once afraid of everything. Seeing his students'
achievement, telling him without the professor they would be nothing, thanking
their professor for his teachings, it has been a very good experience for him.

That was years ago, it came to a point when his eldest son migrated to the
US followed by his wife and second son. This pad became cold and silent.
Many interesting things weren't interesting to him anymore. He even stopped
his yearly spring gathering. These past few years, he felt the heavy weight
as he dragged his way to his condo. He sometimes thought that it would have
been better if he lived in that 20sqm home and exchange whatever he has for
that old feeling.

He entered his condo and was surprised to see Ah Xin inside. His wife arranged
for her to check on him and tidy up the place. Ah Xin told him his wife called,
saying he has another doctor in the family, she was very proud of their second
son. Tang Guo Tai muttered what's good in that and he's to call them right at
that moment. Ah Xin reminded him that it will be 6am in US and no one will
answer his call. Ah Xin said that he also disagrees to let Ah Wei into medical
school, he would end up like Tang Guo Tai, left by his wife and kids to enjoy
US this is why Ah Xin is way better than Tang Guo Tai.

Tang Guo Tai was taking a bath and hasn't dried his hair yet, when his doorbell
rang. "Professor Ji, welcome! What brought you here?" Tang Guo Tai opened
the door and let them in.

"I'm very sorry to disturb you at this hour, I want to introduce to you Mr. Fang.
" Mr. Fang gave Tang Guo Tai his card and the three of them sat on the couch.
He said: "I've been waiting to meet the famous Professor Tang."

"Please don't…" Tang Guo Tai replied as he reached for the name card, he is
the President of a company named Jian Hui Medicine Company Ltd.

"We are dealers of medicines and its components coming from the US, we
appreciate for your great support in the future."

"So what brought you guys here?" Tang Guo Tai asked.

"The Annual Doctor's Meeting (North) is near and we would like to ask you
to be our speaker." Professor Ji answered and brought out a small leather
pouch from his pocket.

"Professor Tang, your name in this community is very big and for us district
doctors, we need your help because we are having a medical profession speech
and also a gathering. This is just our simple intention, please come to our annual
meeting."

"We're friends, you need not bother to do that." The leather pouch is a little bit
thick. Tang Guo Tai opened the seal and took a quick look, inside is a big amount
of bills.

"If Professor Tang would agree to this, it would be our pleasure."
Professor Ji smiled, "This small amount is indeed important to us, wehope you
wouldn't mind."

"I don't think this is just it." Tang Guo Tai asked them.

"We really can't hide anything from you Dr Tang." Professor Ji clapped his hands
and laughed, breaking the silence in the room, "We want to ask for your help
Dr. Tang. You know that at this gathering they will be electing another officer,
my projects in this association haven't come to an end, I wish to continue to
be in my position to finish my projects. I hope that I can gain your utmost
support so as to continue my position."

"Oh, so that's it? As far as I know, there's no problem if you continued your
position so what would be the problem?"

"The competition right now is very tight, but if we have your support, then
I'll have the confidence in winning."

"Am I that influential?"

"You're very humble Sir," Mr. Fang replied, "Your department holds 54 points
for the vote, add up every district and your students, only one word from you
and we can gain 100 votes at once."

"Do you think my students would follow my orders? You have high expectations
on me, I can't be that influential." Tang Guo Tai laughed. He puts the leather
pouch on the table, "But I can see that there's no problem with that, you need
not worry Professor Ji, I think this year, you can surely be the Officer in charge,
if I guessed it wrong, then come back for me."

"With Dr. Tang's word of honor, I want to first congratulate Professor Ji!" Mr. Fang said.

"Thank you very much Professor Tang." He smiled until his eyes became so small
that one couldn't make out his pupils. He added, "Professor Tang, I won't have
second thoughts, there is another favor I wanted to ask you."

"Really?"

"Professor Zhao is retiring and everybody knows, whatever angle you look at, it's
Professor Tang who is suitable…"

"That job is too much for me." Professor Tang said as he waves his hand in rejection.

"But it could affect the existence and harmonious relationship between the North District
and Shen Geng Hospital. You have to be elected in that position. If ever there will
be conflicts between the two parties, only one word from you and we will do our
best to settle things down."

"I'm too old for that job, and I'm living alone in Taiwan…" Tang Guo Tai said.
"We know that you'll sacrifice a lot professor, but your men are all in both of
these associations, everyone of us are counting on you. The officers in this
association are afraid if Xu Da Ming gets hold of the position…" Professor Ji went
closer to Dr. Tang and said in a lower tone.

"You're right. But this matter is not only my concern." Tang Guo Tai said.

"It will be up to Headmaster Xu Kai Yuan to decide on this." Says
Professor Ji.

CHAPTER 1, Part Four

Mr. Fang took out something wrapped in a plastic bubble from his bag. He unwraps
it and reveals a figurine that looks like an ordinary toy horse. Tang Guo Tai is
speechless, he stares and holds the rainbow colored horse and scrutinizes the thing.

"This is a Tang Cai Ma, it's a relic from the Tang Dynasty, a thousand years of age.
" Mr. Fang introduced.

"You wanted to give this horse to Xu Kai Yuan?"

"There is an old saying: A good start is half-way to success," Professor Ji exclaimed,
"This is only the beginning. If you cannot prove that your endorsement will be his
endorsement in the future, then why would he nominate you?" Tang Guo Tai kept
silent for a moment.

Tang Guo Tai sighs, "He was my classmate when I was in medical school, won't it
be weird?"

"That's why we wanted to give this horse." Professor Ji exclaimed, "There is one
thing though that I cannot figure out, let me explain it to you. You know that Mr. Xu
is Taipei's number one collector of ancient relics?"

"Really?"

"Dr. Tang must think this small horse is no big deal at all." Mr. Fang noted, "In this
year's Autumn Auction, this horse claimed the highest bid. Because of this horse,
Mrs. Xu and Li Yang Venture's Chairman Liu tried to be the highest bidder. In the
end the horse was sold to Chairman Liu. She was so angry she kept on stomping
her feet, it's all over the news!"

"So this is the horse we're talking about?" Tang Guo Tai took hold of the horse and
realized it looked like a toy, he cannot figure out how it was able to be sold for that
much. Mr. Fang nodded in agreement.

"How much does it cost?" asked Tang Guo Tai. Mr. Fang whispered the amount,
Tang Guo Tai was really surprised.

Continuation of CHAPTER 1, Part Four

Tang Guo Tai had tried many sleeping pills but he kept on rolling on his bed. He went out
of his bedroom and sat on the couch, turned on the TV and watched the late night news.
The scene of people on rally shouting on top of their voices was on the picture tube. Tang
Guo Tai was a little bit under pressure; he got himself a glass of whiskey and noticed that
the leather pouch is still on the table. He opened the pouch and found thousands of bills;
he put it back right away. He tried dialing overseas and wanted to ask about Xiao Wei's
studies, the answering machine beeped and Xiao Wei's voice was on it and it says: "Sorry,
we are not home. Please leave you message, we will call you back as soon as possible.
" There are many things that let Tang Guo Tai sigh.

He looked at the picture frames of smiling faces around the living room. He can almost
hear the laughing voices as he looked at the pictures. He turned off the lights and sat
in the dark.

7:30am. It's less than one hour before Chen Xin Yu's scheduled operation. Su Yi Hua
looked at his watch. It's very rare that he gets up this early. On the elevator, Su Yi Hua
thought that he's still on time to get to the 15th floor, he wanted to see Chen Xin Yu
before going to the operating room. He arrived at the 15th floor and saw security leaving
the place. "Is the President still inside?" Su Yi Hua asked one of them. "He just left."

Su Yi Hua didn't know what is happening, the security he talked to was surprised as he
talked to him.

After Su Yi Hua entered inside the Presidential Unit, the ambiance is a little bit weird.
The whole unit became very quiet. It's like there's nobody else inside. He went to the
nurse's station. "Oh, Dr. Su why are you here?" asked one of the nurses. "I came by
to see Chen Xin Yu." "Ms. Chen was taken to the operating room at around 6:30AM.
" Su Yi Hua was taken by surprise. "The operation starts at 8am, why would they take
her there that early? Is there a change of plan?"

"Change of Plan?"

"At around 6am, the head nurse called, she said that the Operating Room had a mix
up with the schedule, the operation will start at 7am, she told us to take the patient
to the Operating room at around 6am."

"Did Professor Xu know about the change of schedule?" Su Yi Hua asked.

"We thought that you all knew," answered the nurse. "Please tell Professor Xu at
once." Su Yi Hua rushed out of the room. He quickly changed into his sterilized green
suit, walked towards Operating Room No. 3 and noticed that Chen Xin Yu is already
on the stretcher. The remaining surgeons already disinfected her chest. "Chen Xin Yu,
Chen Xin Yu." Su Yi Hua shouted at her.

She was breathing normally, but didn't answer back. Su Yi Hua saw Chen Xin Yu's
face is already covered with mask, beside her is the heart monitor with its sound
beeping, the lines are jumping up and down as Su Yi Hua saw it on the screen.
An automatic pushing device flashes its almost fading green light, it makes the
anesthesia flow through the dextrose hose and slowly inside the body. Su Yi Hua
quickly asked: "Why did the surgery start so early?"

"It's just about the right time, everybody knows that." Guan Xin's eyes went big
with surprise, "Is there something wrong?" Su Yi Hua was stunned. What's more
unbelievable is that he saw Qiu Qing Cheng outside the operating room. He just
finished sterilizing his hands, holding up his disinfected hands, his back towards
the operating room, he pushes the door open walking backward towards the room.

"Su Yi Hua is here." Qiu Qing Cheng turned around and picked up a towel, cleaning
his hands from the sterilization while talking, "It's a pleasure that you give great
concern, thank you very much."

"Dr. Qiu," Su Yi Hua felt that there's something wrong, "I think there's been a mistake."

"Mistake?" Qiu Qing Cheng raised his voice. His hands shifted inside the pocket
of his operating suit.

"Chen Xin Yu is assigned as my patient," Su Yi Hua explained, "I even visited her
yesterday."

"Really?" Qiu Qing Cheng didn't even bother to stop preparing for the surgery, he
continued to put on his sterilized suit, wore the sterilized gloves, turned around
and asked the Operating Room's nurse and said, "Is this true? Get the patient's
medical history sheet and let me examine it."

The nurse retrieved the records of the patient and handed it over, the pages
started to flip.

"It says in the end pages that Dr. Su has accepted this task," Qiu Qing Cheng
pointed on the sheet, "Let's see, can we find Su Yi Hua's name on the records
for this operation?"

Records for this operation? The nurse flipped through the medical records,
SuYi Hua felt both his ears have gone red. He didn't see any Form to register
this operation, where did this records for operation come from? "This is the
page," Qiu Qing Cheng pointed on the Records for Operation Form. The form
is filled up with scribbles. On the head of the Department space, a fresh red
stamp is visible; Su Yi Hua can almost visualize from afar Tang Guo Tai's familiar
penmanship.

"Yesterday, Professor Tang reviewed this form, this is the record. Su Yi Hua,
do you want to take a look at it?"

At the same time, Xu Da Ming receives a call from the nurse. He angrily rushes
towards the operating room, and sees Tang Guo Tai sitting on the couch of the
waiting lounge, drinking coffee. "Old Xu, come here and have some coffee,
I have something to tell you."

"I'm in a hurry."

Xu Da Ming saw a cameraman and a TV station reporter also inside the waiting
lounge waiting for news. He silently made a sigh, went inside the closet, preparing
to change into green suit.

"There's nothing for you in there to change." Tang Guo Tai slowly walked through
the door. "Come out and have some coffee." As he entered the closet, Xu Da Ming
found an empty rack in front of him.

"I told you there's no clothes left for you inside." Tang Guo Tai said.

"Tang Guo Tai, this is your logic of treating a guest?"

"I don't expect an unimportant guest like you to feel like you're very important.
" Tang Guo Tai said.

"Whatever show you wanted I don't care," Xu Da Ming rushed "Do not take my
patient and play a joke on me."

"Let me tell you honestly, it's better for you to go out and breathe some fresh
air." Tang Guo Tai spreads his hands and legs, making a BIG letter (Chinese
letter for big, raising both hands on shoulder level, then legs widely spread),
blocking Xu Da Ming's way to the operating room. "This is not your territory,
and you're not welcome to even visit here."

"You," Xu Da Ming stared at a short, fat body, pushed Tang Guo Tai, thinking he
can cross through the barrier, "disgraceful."

"Don't even think about finding another territory of yours." Tang Guo Tai still
retorted. One is taller and another is smaller, one is thinner while another is
bigger, the scene began to turn.

All the staffs of the operating room was able to see it, they rushed to the scene
and stopped the fight. He was supposed to separate the two, but he accidentally
pushed both of them to the ground, fighting and scrambling on the floor. In a few
seconds, he was confused. "Someone's fighting!" The staff rushed out of the closet
room and into the big lounge and shouted, he needed to find a bigger person to
help him. The first one to rush to the scene is the cameraman, carrying his big
camera. Then Ma Yi Fen came by and thought that there will be news in a short
while. "First, make a cue for the whole Closet Room, then shoot the fight scene,
let's write a closer scene for this. Faster!"

The next one to rush to the scene is the head nurse, she tried to separate both
of the professors, but someone with a stronger force pulled her out of the scene
and was pushed to the wall. When she gained consciousness, she took out a hanky
from her pocket and wiped her face, then she noticed that blood is dripping from
her nose. "Oh, I'm bleeding!" the nurse shouted in panic. Worse came to worst as
the camera turns to her side, the head nurse unconsciously waved the hanky and
it was focused directly at the camera's lens shrieking with a perfect octave:
"Reporter! Reporter!"

The undergoing surgery at Operating Room No. 3 seems to be unaware of the fuss
outside. "Dr. Su, do you have any more questions?" Qiu Qing Cheng asked. Su Yi Hua
stood there in a helpless state, he didn't know what to say. Suddenly, he realized his
situation. Someone stole his patient from him!

Those involved in the surgery took their places. The head of the surgery turned
around, reaching for the surgery knife from a nurse. At 7:45 am, Qiu Qing Cheng
made his first cut into Chen Xin Yu's chest.

1. F2 returns to screen. and while ZaiZai Vic Zhou appears with a grim, arrogant image, Jerry followed with exactly the opposite. "The Hospital" director Cai Yue Xun said, "In this drama, Su Yi Hua (Jerry's role as a medical doctor) started amiable and sunny." Rushing up for the summer vacation broadcast, Cai Yue Xun now sleeps at the editing room everyday. Yu Xiao Hui frankly said that the editing were mainly the young actors' parts. In Jerry alone, his performances are outstanding. In front of these hard-based actors Wu Meng Da and Dai Li Ren, he is not at all inferior.

2. After the "SIlence" airing, F4 fans will now await for its other member Jerry who hasnt made a big screen appearance for a long time. In ZaiZai's "deep" drama, from a self-restrained guy, he only came to open up himself slowly when he met Po En Hui, and engraved to a charming love affair. As to Jerry, while Xiao Bai Tu is deeply trapped in "The Hospital", he unconciously got involved in a hospital struggle, until he finally realized it and searched by himself the reasons why he wanted to be doctor first.

3. A few days ago, The Hospital scenes were initially shown. Everyone was all extremely admiring Jerry. Yu Xiao Hui laughed and said, "He is really very talented. He already got away from being a young male and came out very clever. He has matured to a man of flavor. " So even if Cai Yue Xun would not relent editing big chunks of scenes, Jerry's parts will not greatly lessen after the editing.


4. The drama plot and structure are also one of the many considerations of Cai Yue Xun. So in the editing, location scenes and againscenes in the operating room were cut. Those scenes they spent at least 800 thousand, and even if others say its a waste of labor and intellect. Cai Yue Xun is also really struggling, and finally regretly cutting off the scenes. Cai Yue Xun said that he took a fight in filming and writing real cruelty, where drama feelings and illusions again wont do.

Taiwan's idol drama has come to Japan to promote its broadcast, it wasn’t hard for everyone to know about it, Japanese girls have a lot of enthusiasm, t Among those who have the biggest advantage to this wave of male artists (Hua Liu) is Ken Chu and Vanness Wu, Peng Yu Yan who came to Japan one after the other to conduct their own publicity promotions and were given enthusiastic welcomes. But at the beginning of June, Ariel Lin has accepted a propaganda activity in Japan to begin the trail blaze of female idols in Japan.

Because of F4’s Meteor Garden 1, 2 there is now a big attention on Jerry Yan he is now said to be the ladies’ dream lover, Zai Zai and Da S’ (Mars) had gone to Japan to promote, and have started to become well known this F2 members have shown their talent. uh nga jie , until now i still can't get over it, sana talaga nakasama ka...but di bale ok naman yung naging kapalit nun di ba yung achivement ni bunso worth naman eh.

pero yung concert ang tindi ng epekto di lang basta yun, we never expected that we'll be able to see them up close, pero matindi rin ang hirap na dinanas namin jie, kung alam mo lang but we never regret anything lahat yun buong puso naming ginusto kahit dumaan kami sa mga problema before & after the concert but, IT WAS ALL WORTH IT!

ei jie di ba naman nagdugo ang mga mata mo? sad kasi wala me ma la xian xi, at marmalade boy.....yung love scar nung isang araw ko lang napanood, hehe ang tagal bago ko natanggap na partner niya dun si KM pero in fairness ha ok naman yung story in fact, naiyak ako sa ending.....

huhuhu... good for u, jie! i was there with my kapatid sa pananampalataya kay jerry, we waited patiently for our names to be called, pero we weren't so lucky enough. had we known na my extraordinary treatment for those who stayed there the night before the event, sana natulog din kami noh. para kami rin mas happy. oh but we were so happy naman kc we saw jerry closely, (so kinis grabe!)... pero un nga, we were kinda heart-broken kc nga di namin na-shake hands si papa jerry... at di ko nasabi sa kanya ng harapan ang "wo ai ni".

hi LuvJerry! that time i don't know how i feel....as if wala ako sa sarili ko sa sobrang excitement, nervous.....i wasn't expected kasi na makakamayan ko siya, dahil sabi ko sa sarili ko makita ko lang ng close ok na ako...pero naka-shake hands ko pa...i really felt so great after, the only thing na nasabi ko was thank you & God bless you! Ang matindi pa nun pag pala nakaharap mo siya eye to eye kung tumingin.
By the way, you're from canada pala? some of my relatives were there too...

Sana ipalabas na ang White Tower, Can't wait. Kahapon sa sobrang pagka miss ko kay Jerry nanood me ng recording ko ng kanyang arrivals last 3 years ago. Pati yung concert na Happy 50 tv pinanood ko na.
