Jeffrey Ching: World Class Composer
Apr 28, 2007
- Carmela Bignotia

Ordinary citizens are always grateful to composers who gladly use and share their god-given gifts to all by creating fine melodies and rhythms. The world will be such a lonely place to live in without music.

One great composer that we can all be proud of is Jeffrey Ching. Ching is a true son of music and his talent became evident early. At a young age (barely 10), he can complete complicated musical compositions like five-movement symphonies or three-act-operas. As a teenager (14 years old), his composition Cantata in Memory of a Great Man was publicly performed.

Born in Manila, Jeffrey Ching is the son of Alfredo Ching and Encarnacion Tong. He comes from a family of entrepreneurs but his passion for music leads him to a different path.

He had written more than 200 beautiful compositions. Ching’s music is unique and exceptional because it combines modern music with the tune of different ancient cultures. Ching’s compositions often have elements of ancient Chinese music. According to Ching, “Many of my works use material from Ancient China.”

A government commissioned work he did to mark the centennial of Philippine independence, third symphony rituals has music elements of gamelan from Bali, baroque from Spain, and music from the Chinese Ming dynasty.

Educational Background

Composing great pieces even at a young age, Ching is truly a musical genius. Still, he chose to hone his talents further by taking formal studies. He studied at Harvard University, Cambridge University, and Royal Academy of London. At Harvard, he graduated magna cum laude with a double degree in music and sinology. He was a music lecturer at London University for four years from 1987-1991.

Recognitions

His compositions received awards both here in the Philippines and abroad. Famous musicians from all parts of the globe ( USA, UK, Australia, Germany) have premiered Ching’s works. In 1998 he was one of the Top Ten Outstanding Young Filipinos. He is also the recipient of Jose P. Rizal Award for Excellence (art, literature, and culture category) in 2003.
